Pet firm shares TV billing with PM Boris Johnson

It’s not every day your product range appears live on TV. It’s perhaps even rarer, that it follows on from an interview with the Prime Minster ahead of an election. But that’s exactly what happened to HayPigs!

The company’s multi-award-winning Guinea Pig Circus range made an appearance on ITV’s This Morning programme with Phil and Holly, in a feature entitled ‘The Best Christmas Gifts for Your Pet’.

Co-founder Rik Cridland said: “On Tuesday afternoon we received an email from an Assistant Producer at ITV’s This Morning programme. She explained that they were doing an item on what to buy for your pet this Christmas.

“We were obviously very keen to oblige and willing sent some goodies in. Now as with all TV, features can change, be moved or even cancelled at the last minute, so we didn’t allow ourselves to get too excited. But come Thursday morning when we heard the words ‘A circus tent for guinea pigs’ in the ‘what’s coming up today’ intro, we knew it was going to be an unusual day.”

“And that’s when we realised our warm-up act was none other than PM Boris Johnson,” explains co-founder Helen.  “He was being interviewed ahead of the election and controversially took a selfie with Phil and Holly!

“We do have many surreal moments running a Guinea Pig Circus, but this has to be up there with the best of them. Suffice to say, we got some great coverage and the range looked fab on TV. It’s nice to know that we are doing our bit to put guinea pigs in the spotlight.”

IPN confirms £250,000 investment at Kinmel Park site

Inspired Pet Nutrition is investing £250,000 at its Kinmel Park site in Bodelwyddan in North Wales, home of its subsidiary The Real Petfood Company. The investment includes new production and robotic equipment, additional storage and racking and employee safety initiatives.

Inspired Pet Nutrition is investing £250,000 at its Kinmel Park site in Bodelwyddan in North Wales, home of its subsidiary The Real Petfood Company.

The investment includes new production and robotic equipment, additional storage and racking and employee safety initiatives.

As part of the investment, additional mincing equipment is being installed which will enable the business to take full advantage of growing consumer demand for paté-style wet dog food.

Previously the business sourced this ingredient from a third party and so the investment gives the firm complete quality control over the whole manufacturing process. Additional robotic equipment is also being installed to remove the manual stacking and wrapping of products. This will increase production efficiency by some 20% and the robots have the capacity to handle more than 200 trays per minute.

The firm is committed to growing sales from their current level of around £15 million pa to more than £25 million pa over the next two years. Warehouse space has been increased by more than 50% which has enabled the company to enhance its pallet storage capacity by some 40% to 4,600 pallets.

Finally, following the appointment of James Angus as safety manager for IPN, several steps have been taken to further improve on-site safety and segregate pedestrians from vehicles.  Additional collision proof fencing has been installed along with marked walkways, and training sessions also organised to increase safety awareness.

James Lawson, managing director of The Real Petfood Company, said: “Our wet food tray products under the Wagg and Harringtons brands are performing extremely well with customers appreciating our FreshCook technique where ingredients are cooked just once to ensure the full nutritional value is maintained.

"Sales of Harringtons wet pet food are particularly strong and during the past 12 months have risen more than 30%.

"The continued investments enable us to increase production, achieve even greater levels of efficiency, store more product and, ultimately, supply super quality FreshCook products at lower cost.”

Less than 40% of rabbits and guinea pigs being fed correctly

A recent survey of UK veterinary professionals, carried out by Supreme Petfoods, found that they believe that less than 40% of all rabbits and guinea pigs are being fed correctly, with lack of owner knowledge on how to feed judged to be the major cause.

A recent survey* of UK veterinary professionals, carried out by Supreme Petfoods, found that they believe that less than 40% of all rabbits and guinea pigs are being fed correctly, with lack of owner knowledge on how to feed judged to be the major cause.

The main consequence of this is dental disease. On average, vet clinics are seeing 16 rabbit and guinea pig consults each month and 75% of these cases involve providing nutritional advice to improve health.

Veterinary professionals identified that small pets are often being overfed concentrate that is too low in fibre, are not eating enough hay and not being given the correct amount of fresh greens. This has led to pets being presented with conditions such as dental disease and obesity.

In 44% of consults where a nutritional recommendation was made, the dietary change was recommended to help combat dental disease, while in 25% of cases, a dietary change was recommended to help manage weight. Vets and vet nurses highlighted that they had significant concerns about the level of weight gain and obesity in small pets and have estimated that 55% of rabbits and 47% of guinea pigs are overweight.

A further 13% of dietary recommendations were made to help support urinary tract health. In 19% of cases, a liquid recovery feed was used.

The fibre content of diets for rabbits and guinea pigs was reported as the most important decision-making criteria when making a nutritional recommendation and 32% of respondents said they looked for a rabbit food containing around 20-30% fibre; although 9% vets said that they were unsure about ideal levels.

A further 22% said they would look for a rabbit food with 70-100% fibre but this can’t even be achieved by feeding hay alone, which has a crude fibre level of around 35%. Although rabbits can live on hay and water alone, most experts recommend also providing some fresh leafy green vegetables and a measured amount of commercial feed to ensure vitamin and mineral intake (source Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund). Taking into account all extruded small pet foods available in the UK, Supreme’s Science Selective contains the highest fibre content, with 25% Crude Fibre – the legal measure of fibre in a pet food.

Quality, palatability, knowledge and fibre content were all cited as important criteria when making a brand recommendation. Supreme ranked highest among vets when recommending a food for small pets, with respondents stating that Supreme was also the first brand that they would recommend in the next 12 months.

Asked to say what they would most like to change to improve the health and wellbeing of small pets, the top answers given by veterinary professionals were improved owner education and better diets.

Supreme supports veterinary teams to educate owners with free rabbit nutrition packs, which contain rabbit care guides that focus on the correct amounts of hay, concentrate and fresh greens that should be fed, using an easy-to-understand visual guide.

There is also a poster for the waiting room and samples of Science Selective, with a money off next purchase coupon included in the packs. To order free rabbit nutrition packs, veterinary practices and pet shops can email experts@supremepetfoods.com.

*The online survey was carried out in September 2019 and based on feedback from the 372 veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses who responded.

Fundraising appeal for first-ever dedicated hen hospital

Currently in the finishing stages of building the UK’s first dedicated Hen Welfare, Education and Visitor Centre at its headquarters in Devon, the British Hen Welfare Trust has teamed up with ChickenGuard to raise vital funds to complete the UK’s first dedicated hen rehoming centre...

Currently in the finishing stages of building the UK’s first dedicated Hen Welfare, Education and Visitor Centre at its headquarters in Devon, the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) has teamed up with ChickenGuard - manufacturers and sellers of the world’s most innovative automatic chicken coop door openers - to raise vital funds to complete the UK’s first dedicated hen rehoming centre.

The purpose of the construction is to provide not only a committed rehoming centre in Devon, but also a space for holding educational talks and performing pioneering veterinary treatment on hens.

The BHWT needs to raise just £5,000 to provide essential life-saving kit, which will provide treatment for poorly chickens and facilitate ground-breaking research for vets to utilise in their clinics across the UK. Equipment needed includes: a specialist examination table and lighting, post op recovery bays, sterilisation and surgical instruments, anesthetic equipment and a variety of other essential fixtures and fittings.

Founder of ChickenGuard, Ben Braithwaite, said: “Our mission at ChickenGuard is to protect the girls with our automatic chicken coop door openers, so choosing to support the BHWT in 2019/20 was simply natural, because the charity has been saving hens from slaughter for many years. It is a real privilege to be part of their journey in making their hen hospital a reality.”

Since the BHWT was set up in 2005, the charity has rehomed more than 740,000 (over 60,000 a year) hens who would have otherwise gone to slaughter. The charity believes all laying hens deserve to enjoy a free-range lifestyle; including space to roam on green pasture, the chance to enjoy fresh air and sunshine, to scratch for insects and the opportunity to spread their wings for a refreshing dust bath.

Jane Howorth, MBE, founder of the BHWT, says: “We are incredibly grateful to ChickenGuard and their customers for the support with our hen hospital.

“Our new Hen Welfare, Education and Visitor Centre has only been made possible through generous donations from our loyal supporters who care as much as we do about the welfare of laying hens across the country.

“It’s therefore really fitting to have the support of ChickenGuard, who were founded with the sole purpose of keeping chickens safe, to help us complete this bespoke hen hospital that will improve and enhance the lives of hundreds of hens over the years to come.

“We can’t wait to open this new facility and to really see what difference we can make to the lives of these remarkable little animals, who bring so much joy to so many of us. On behalf of the hens, thanks again to ChickenGuard and all those who have supported us so far in making this a reality.”

For more information about the hen hospital or to make a donation so that BHWT can carry on their vital work saving the lives of thousands more hens, visit the dedicated JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/chickenguard-bhwt-hen-hospital.

Every penny raised will go directly towards veterinary equipment that will help improve the quality of life for thousands of chickens.

Homeless dogs receive special Christmas delivery

Christmas has come early for deserving dogs at four rescue centres, thanks to a large donation of toys from leading dog-toy brand, Chuckit!...

Christmas has come early for deserving dogs at four rescue centres, thanks to a large donation of toys from leading dog-toy brand, Chuckit!.

The four centres - Lincolnshire Rescue Kennels, Ark Animal Rescue and Retirement Home, RSPCA Radcliffe and Halfway Home Dog Rescue - all rely on kind donations, be that monetary or otherwise, to help their rehoming work and efforts to care for dogs in need. Between the four centres, they received £1,000-worth of Chuckit! toys.

For all the centres, the dogs they take in have often had tough lives and need great care and support until they find their forever homes – and Christmas can be a particularly hard time with the cold weather.

Chuckit!, whose brand ethos is promoting happy and healthy lifestyles for dogs, donated a selection of some of the brand’s most popular toys to each of the centres, including its best-selling Ultra Balls and launchers, which will enable the carers to encourage even more interactive and fun ways to play. The toys will also offer a great way to help potential new pet owners visiting the centre to build bonds with the pooches.

Hannah Green, Kennel Assistant at Lincolnshire Rescue Kennels, says: “We’d all like to say a massive thank you to Chuckit! for their toy donation. As a small rescue centre, we rely heavily on donations to provide the best possible care to the dogs waiting for their forever homes. The toys donated will make a huge difference to the dogs as playtime is what keeps them happy while we find them a place to call their own.”

Presenting the toys to the centres, Ted Swales, Marketing Executive for Chuckit!, says: “We are thrilled to be able to bring some Christmas cheer to the deserving dogs at all the centres and hope that the Chuckit! toys will help provide the dogs with hours of fun over the festive season and in 2020.”

First class design award for Pool House Equine Clinic

Pool House Equine Clinic in Staffordshire, part of the IVC Evidensia Group, has scooped a prestigious BVHA Annual Design Award, coming first in the new build category.

The highly acclaimed, multi-million pound equine facility has already been recognised by a Royal visit from HRH The Prince of Wales earlier this year.

Richard Stephenson, clinical director for the facility said: “After the excitement of Prince Charles’ visit, winning this award really is the icing on the cake. We put a tremendous amount of thought into the design of the clinic, consulting widely with staff to ensure everything worked for them and clients. There is nothing I would change - although of course we already have ideas about further expansion!”

The practice mission is encapsulated in their motto, Putting your horse first. The building is designed to create a facility that enables staff to deliver the practice mission, whilst affording an excellent working environment for clinicians and support staff.

The referral case load is rapidly expanding, with some clients travelling large distances to attend the clinic. The team wanted a building that was functional and spoke of quality care without being ostentatious or overtly extravagant. The clinical directors were very clear that functionality, not flights of fanciful design, was what was required.

A particular challenge was constructing the new building, a five-fold increase in facilities, on site whilst continuing to operate the clinic, but the team achieved a seamless service for their clients.

Many of the referral cases are for colic surgery and other types of emergency surgery. The team wanted to ensure that they could cope with two major surgical cases at any time. Two operating theatres with a further ‘standing’ theatre and a completely separate dental theatre were all part of the initial design goals.

Improving working conditions for staff was also a major concern and in line with this each stage of the draft design was discussed with both office and clinical staff with frequent amendments made during the design process. As the clinic is in a relatively remote rural location, there is a Health and Fitness room for staff to use during rest periods as well as a large comfortable kitchen/quiet area.

Another important consideration for Pool House was the development of further business as a CPD provider.  A 59 seat lecture theatre and a small seminar room were included within the design.

An important aim of Pool House is to provide quality EMS for veterinary students on the Erasmus programme from other European states. With this in mind, three student bedrooms have been included in the new building.

The practice very much sees these students as the potential interns and residents of the future. A close link with Nottingham University is currently being developed and selective for Glasgow University students are available. Pool House shares two residents with Glasgow University and has three European Diplomates on the staff.

Laser treatment boon for pets

Gilmore Veterinary Surgery in Standish has joined forces with LaserPet to bring the next level of healing and pain relief to pets.

LaserPet, founded by Registered Veterinary Nurse Lauren Keenan, offers low level laser therapy using a global leader K-Laser machine, clinics are now available at the Standish practice.

Low level laser therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that stimulates the body’s own haling mechanism to help reduce pain and inflammation. It helps accelerate and improve the quality of healing.

Back pain, sprains, arthritis and wounds all respond well to treatment with a K-Laser. It can also help pets recover quicker after surgery, encouraging quicker healing. As an added bonus, pets normally find the procedure quite relaxing so they don’t need any extra sedation and the treatment time is around 15 minutes.

Lauren, LaserPet founder and therapist, said:“I have always had a passion for helping animals live happier, healthier lives. It’s what made me decide to become a veterinary nurse. I spent some time working as a nurse in the US where this type of treatment is used by a large proportion of practices to improve their patients’ health and well-being. I saw first-hand how it can really help.

“My interest was piqued and I decided to become a K-Laser certified operator. I am very excited to be able to bring this treatment to more of the North West’s beloved pets!”

To find out more or to have a chat about how low level laser therapy could benefit your pet, call Gilmore Veterinary Surgery on 01257 426110 or drop Lauren an email on laserpetuk@gmail.com.

Petindex – a new type of trade show

Petindex is a new trade show aimed at all pet businesses within the UK pet market, as well as those overseas. It is organised by the Pet Industry Federation, the UK trade association for pet businesses.

Here the Pet Industry Federation (PIF) outlines its plans for Petindex, which takes place on 26-27 April 2020 at the Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.

"The Pet Industry Federation is at the heart of the UK’s pet industry, with membership bringing together businesses from the whole industry in a way which no other UK organisation does.

"Petindex will provide a unique platform to unite the whole industry at one event, attracting a wide audience of pet professionals looking for more than just a trade show. It is positioned differently to other trade shows in the UK, because of its aim to bring all types of pet businesses together, not just the traditional retailer/manufacturer combination. The shape and nature of pet retail in the UK is changing, and Petindex is a show which broadens the horizons for pet manufacturers and offers them not just retailers, but also influencers within the service sector.

"All pet businesses are invited to visit Petindex. The main event is free to attend as a visitor, including all the seminars and demonstrations taking place throughout the event. The event takes place under one roof over two days at a convenient, centrally located venue with on-site hotel and great road and rail access and at a good time of year."

Why should businesses have a trade stand?

"Petindex is projected to have over 100 trade stands from both the UK and overseas and companies such as Royal Canin, Natures Menu, Marriage’s, Supreme Petfoods and Pawfect Petfoods have already committed to attend. From the profiles of our pet membership, we know that in order to support pet manufacturers, influencers of products are very important. Any business involved in this industry will both like pets and use pet products. They in turn talk to pet owners and are therefore a brilliant resource to promote your products. We aim to harness this at Petindex where visitors will be designated as either a retailer/large purchaser of products or an influencer. This will allow stand holders to target their conversation stand visitors.

"PIF is a not for profit company which means we don’t have shareholders. Our members own PIF and therefore this allows us to offer stands at much more economical rates than other shows as well as make the event and seminars free to enter for pet businesses. Exhibitors will also be able to get a discount to attend the PIF Awards on Sunday 26 April."

What about education?

"There will be three seminar rooms running a wide variety of seminars over two days. The seminar rooms collectively hold 300 people and we have already secured Trevor Cooper (Dog Law), Yvonne Mackinder (COAPE), Joe Watson (Petland USA), export market seminars on China, the USA and the EU, as well as many other speakers who we will announce closer to the event. There will be something for everyone and our seminar themes will include business, animal wellness, grooming, retailing, and pet services.

"In the main arena, there will also be an education zone with City & Guilds, Pearsons and LANTRA and of course PIF Education attending where you can discuss courses and how you can be part of PIF’s core objective of raising standards in the pet industry."

What else is going on?

"On Sunday 26 April, the British Dog Grooming Championships will take place to determine the 2020 Groomer of the Year. Registrations will open before the end of the year and if you have never visited a grooming competition before it’s well worth a look to see the dedication and passion that pet groomers put into this competition. On the Monday, the area will host grooming demonstrations delivered by internationally renowned groomers.

"Our intention is to help businesses connect the dots, so there will also be a business village at the show. Too often businesses are isolated and find it difficult to get practical help in starting business services or how to engage with other like-minded business people. Petindex will also offer advice on developing pet services such as grooming, walking or day care – areas which are really booming in the industry currently.

"There will a ‘green’ sustainability stand where we will have experts on hand to talk about things you could do to make your business more sustainable. We want to help you change some of your old habits for a more sustainable future.

"For PIF members, there will be a lounge you can visit for you to take time out during the day for some complementary refreshments. The arena of course also sells food and drink during the day.

"In addition, exhibitors will also have the opportunity to put forward products at Petindex for the innovation awards and we will announce the winners in four categories during the Awards night.

"And talking of the Awards night, the Pet Industry Federation Awards dinner will take place on Sunday 26 April in the DoubleTree Hilton – the hotel adjoining the arena, so not far to walk!"

Lily’s Kitchen has witnessed sales of its hugely popular advent calendar for cats grow +27% yoy and its dog calendars have seen growth of +52% since they launched five years ago.

Each year, demand for the £10 advent calendars (which boasts celebrity fans such as Victoria Beckham)  grows and in 2014 when they produced a modest 5000, this year Lily’s Kitchen has made over ten times more, and has shipped to 9 countries across Europe, Middle East and Asia.

Lily’s Kitchen was the first company in the UK to launch pet advent calendars, and where they have pioneered, many others have now followed in their footsteps, with the pet advent calendar market now a regular feature at Christmas.

Cat fans of Lily’s Kitchen have their very own advent calendar to help them countdown to Christmas in the most deliciously exciting way – each window is filled with naturally wholesome treats made from Chicken with Liver, Chicken with Shrimp, and Turkey with Cranberry.

And of course, tails up and down the country (and now world!) are wagging in delight at the dog advent calendars which are generously filled with Cheese and Apple Training Treats (made with fresh russet apples and organic farmhouse cheddar) along with Rise & Shines (made with beef liver, blackstrap molasses and alfalfa making dogs feel chirpier than a Christmas robin) and Bedtime Biscuits (made with honey, yoghurt, chamomile and passion flowers to help keep pups calm amongst the excitement).

According to research carried out by American Express, in 2018, two in three dog owners bought their pets a festive present, spending £166million over the season with many admitting to spending more on their pets than their human friends and family.

A new recipe book “Tasty Treats for Happy Dogs’ by Henrietta Morrison, founder of Lily’s Kitchen which is set to launch on the 5th December has already received pre-orders on Amazon.co.uk.  The book serves up 50 nourishing and easy-to-make treat recipes and is a cookbook thoughtfully designed for your four-legged family members. From everyday wholesome snacks for cold days to celebration recipes, including birthday cake and Christmas cookies, this lovely book has something for every occasion.

Comments Henrietta Morrison, founder of Lily's Kitchen: “Pets are such an important part of our family, so it’s only natural that we want to spoil them just as much as the rest of our family during the festive season. It’s wonderful seeing them perform tricks for their daily Advent Calendar treat and then on Christmas Day itself, join in the fun with their very own specially prepared Spectacular Three Bird Feast. Our Christmas collection has become a must have each year as more and more people want to include their pets in their Christmas festivities.”

The Lily’s Kitchen show-stopping Christmas Spectacular collection not only includes their much-anticipated advent calendars but also treats in Christmas crackers and festive, natural meals for dogs and cats and is available on www.lilyskitchen.co.uk and in over 700 independent pet shops. ‘Tasty Treats for Happy Dogs’ is available from today (5th December).

HOWND, the multi award-winning ethical pet care brand, has successfully closed its first round of investment following an equity crowdfunding campaign. The company, which rebranded to HOWND in 2015, raised just shy of £200k from 329 investors on the investment platform Crowdcube.

“After years of putting the building blocks in place, we are well positioned to focus on growth and innovation covering health, wellness and hygiene,” explains Mark Hirschel, Director of Business Development.

“In the next two years, we will be focused on bringing people into the business who are experts in their fields to ensure that we get to the next level of growth faster,” explains Mark.

“Seeing the number of customers and industry colleagues who invested in our brand proves to us that we are on the right track.

“We have a lot of work to do over the next 12 months and excited for the challenges that lie ahead post investment.”

Dobbies unveils ultimate dog wash in Edinburgh

The future of dog grooming has arrived in Edinburgh as Dobbies Garden Centre opens its brand new, state-of-the-art, self-service dog wash.

The new dog wash at Dobbies makes grooming pooches of all shapes and sizes easy. The dogs enter via a ramp and are washed and blow-dried inside. The dog wash even ensures that their humans dodge the inevitable soaking that follows every shake.

Launched in store, the new dog wash is suitable for dogs of all sizes and features a shampoo, rinse, optional flea shampoo and hair dryer to make sure they look perfectly polished and dogs come out smelling beautiful.

More than a third of people in Britain own a dog and according to the Pet Foods Manufacturing Association there were 471,000 households with dogs in 2017. And it’s clear that pet owners are quite happy to indulge their furry friends with 54% saying they’d cut back on spending on themselves in favour of a pet, according to Mintel.

Dobbies in Edinburgh has extended its pets section in recent months in response to growing demand. From an extended pet food section, natural treat section, grooming products, pet bedding, a large pet toy aisle and even a weighing station, there’s everything pet owners could possibly need for happy, healthy animals.

Sean Kelly, Head of Pets, at Dobbies said: “Our new dog wash has already been given a paws up by our canine testers. Our research showed that owners don’t like having to wash the dog in the family bathtub, and most of all, the clean up afterwards. This way, dogs can enjoy a relaxing pamper in pleasant surroundings and owners are spared the chore of cleaning afterwards.”

The dog wash at Dobbies costs £10 per 15 minute session, with no need to book. For more information visit www.dobbies.com
