New owner of pet food firm expands retail side of business

The new owner of leading Midlands-based raw pet food manufacturer, Albion Pet Foods, has heavily invested in the company since taking it over from the previous owners as part of plans to expand the retail arm of the business.

Albion Pet Products is one of the longest established raw food manufacturers in the UK and remained a family owned business for nearly 40 years. Renowned for its quality and variety of products, personal customer care and expertise in the raw food arena, the company proved to be an attractive proposition when it came up for sale for successful business owner and entrepreneur, Gill Bower.

Gill had already run a successful manufacturing business in the North East for 24 years and due to her in interest in dogs’ health, supplements and immunotherapy, she felt that the purchase of Albion would be a good way to bring out a range of good quality support supplements at realistic prices alongside quality pet food products.

Since taking over Albion, Gill has moved the manufacturing side of the pet food to a new plant in Warwickshire so that the whole process can be closely monitored from manufacturing to distribution.

Gill said: “We believe that we manufacture a great quality product using excellent quality ingredients. We only want to sell products which I’d be happy feeding to my own dogs. I currently own 9 Irish Setters and 1 Springer Spaniel.

“We aim to offer a good customer service to both retailers and consumers. Albion sources human grade ingredients from DEFRA approved farms and probably has the most comprehensive range of raw food recipes on the market.

"As well as a Standard Range and a Pure Meat Range, we also offer Complete recipes, life stage meals, a Chunky Range and a Freeflow Range which makes it easier to portion out the mince and then put the packet back in the freezer for future use. We also offer frozen fish and a comprehensive range of natural treats.

"We offer a select range of products which are only available to the trade. We are passionate about finding more independent retailers who care about quality pet nutrition and we feel that this is an extra service we can offer as our commitment to the trade.”

As well as investing in a new manufacturing plant, Gill has also used her marketing background to create a stylish rebrand for Albion which includes attractive new modern packaging, and an updated website. They also have branded freezers which are available to stockists.

The dedication to the trade will shortly see the appointment of a new sales manager who will be joining from a major player in the raw food market. His job will be to expand the 217 stockists that Albion currently has around the country.

Gill added: “We are extremely optimistic about the future. The raw food market continues to grow year on year by a minimum of 10% and the changes we have made will mean that Albion is best placed to meet the demands of such a growing market.”
