Growing pet food firm searches for bigger premises

Yorkshire-based Pure Pet Food, which has grown an amazing 50% in March alone, is set to turnover in excess of 1.5 million this year, prompting a search for bigger premises in which to produce its award-winning products...

Yorkshire-based Pure Pet Food, which has grown an amazing 50% in March alone, is set to turnover in excess of 1.5 million this year, prompting a search for bigger premises in which to produce its award-winning products.

Pure has ambitious plans to change the pet food industry for the better and believes that its innovative and simple approach can help owners feed a fresh and low processed diet to their pets.

Mat Cockroft, who founded the company with friend Daniel Valdur Eha, said: "We understand that feeding a home prepared or raw diet is not always feasible for some owners both from a cost and time perspective.

"Our mission, as it has always been, is to make healthy choices as easy as possible for owners. After all why would you feed your dog something you wouldn’t eat yourself?

“The current pet food industry is largely based around using ingredients not fit for human consumption, processing them heavily and then displaying them in natural packaging to sell to an end consumer."

Dan added: “We are inundated with success stories and rather than any special or secret ingredients in our recipes it is more about what we haven’t added.

"All our ingredients are air dried, a really gentle food processing method, and our recipes contains no grains, corn, additives or any other nasties.

"Pure food is made with nothing but fresh meat, veg and fruit, this provides pets with the equivalent of a fresh home prepared meal."

Pure believes that just like humans, animals should be eating a diet that is as fresh and low processed as possible.

Mat and Dan have recently had a video and photoshoot detailing their story. You can view the video by clicking here or on the image below.

Hey Diddle Diddle pet food produced for Tesco stores

Hey Diddle Diddle, a range of premium cat and dog food, has been launched in Tesco stores...

Hey Diddle Diddle, a range of premium cat and dog food, has been launched in Tesco stores.

The range follows extensive research into changing consumer demands for pet nutrition and was developed by C & D Foods in Ireland. It’s aimed at addressing a gap in the market for a high quality, naturally hypoallergenic product that provides clear dietary advice.

Design agency Equator was tasked by Salma Khan, category development director at C & D Foods, to design the packaging for a premium pet food brand that would see a move away from traditional, formulaic pet food design formats towards a more personable and individual treatment.

Prior to launch, C & D Foods conducted extensive quantitative and qualitative research and trialled the products with focus groups across the country.  The team also conducted a major piece of work with the IGD in June last year to fully understand what customers are looking for and to evaluate market data.

The market showed growth within the premium product market, leveraging the trend around the changing role of pets and how they are viewed within the family unit.

Research suggested that consumers see their animal as another family member and treat them as such; putting their welfare at a premium.

Furthermore, not only are pet owners looking to provide a healthy, nutritious diet; they are also seeking an emotional engagement and further reassurance that they are buying the very best.

Armed with this insight, Equator also undertook their own research and audited general food trends across the retail sector. This allowed the team to develop a strategy which would underpin the brand proposition, bringing to life the relationship between owner and animal.

To leverage this sentiment the team explored the various ways people nurture and show affection, especially as parents.

The creative response was a foray into nursery rhymes and bedtime stories, which resonated with the client and team owing to their simple narratives and charming familiarity.

“Hey Diddle Diddle evolved as the obvious choice not only because the main characters are a cat and a dog, but because the nursery rhyme is well known amongst families cross generationally,” said a spokesperson for Equator.

“The adopted style was both playful and charming without being twee. Consideration was given to differentiating the variants for each animal using a contrasting colour palette, however, a final decision was made to unite the brand with a natural craft paper brown style, capitalising on the trend around humanised pet food and ‘home-cooked’ style recipes.

“Our in-house illustration team and character artists explored various styles that were tested with the target market, to ensure the correct tone of voice was emulated. The chosen style seemed best to capture the naive individuality and simplicity of ingredients that are core to the heart of the brand.

“Tesco have been very supportive of the brand development process and we have taken inspiration from their input. Early reports have indicated the brand has been well received and demand is growing.”
Bigger and better New Product Showcase at AQUA 2017

Visitors to the two-day AQUA 2017 exhibition can expect to see an impressive display of new products when the premier aquatics and water gardening trade show takes place at the Telford International Centre on October 18-19...

Visitors to the two-day AQUA 2017 exhibition can expect to see an impressive display of new products when the premier aquatics and water gardening trade show takes place at the Telford International Centre on October 18-19.

The New Product Showcase is one of the most popular features at the event as visiting buyers welcome the chance to view all the latest launches in one dedicated area.

A record number of more than 100 new products were showcased in 2015 when AQUA was last staged, and a higher number is expected this year. All the items will be entered into the New Product Awards, which will be judged by a team of independent retailers on the opening morning of the show.

In recognition of the growing importance of the New Product Showcase, the Awards will be presented to the winners at the AQUA dinner for the first time, in front of an audience of over 600 people from the trade after the first day of the show.

There will 10 different categories making up the Showcase and Awards. They are:
  • POS/Merchandising/Support
  • Reptile
  • Pond Construction/Decoration
  • Pond Pumps
  • Pond Filters
  • Pond Food, Care and Accessories
  • Aquaria, Furniture and Decor
  • Freshwater Equipment
  • Aquarium Food, Care and Accessories
  • Marine Equipment
Show organiser Annie Foord said: “New product development is a key factor in a company’s on-going success, and that’s why shows like AQUA 2017 are so important.

“The fact that the New Product Awards will now be presented at the AQUA dinner just emphasises how important they have become.”

Winning an award is a real accolade for the companies involved and helps promote both company and product awareness.

OASE picked up two New Product Awards at AQUA two years ago and Managing Director Chris Wright emphasised the importance of the accolades. He said: “We were delighted to be recognised for winning the awards for the best pond pump and the best filter. The exposure certainly helped to create lots of interest in the products.

“We are really excited about attending AQUA 2017. The show has been a huge success for us over past few years. We can't wait to show our valued customers our innovations and new business segments for the first time at this year’s show.”

Retailers and buyers will be invited to join exhibitors at the AQUA dinner, which includes a three-course meal and drinks. Located in the International Centre the dinner is free for everyone to attend and is a great way to relax after a busy day at the show. Visitors can book their place at the dinner on the AQUA 2017 website www.aquatelford.co.uk where you’ll also find a full list of exhibitors.

Other visitor benefits include: free entry, free catalogue, a complimentary deli bag lunch, a wide range of catering facilities and free parking at Telford International Centre.

Expert's unique study to shed new light on dog behaviour

A canine health expert is hoping to shed new light on dog behaviour relating to chronic muscle pain when she travels to India next month to undertake a unique study.

Julia Robertson is the founder of Galen Myotherapy – a unique hands-on muscle remedy used to treat dogs with arthritis and underlying pain – and is taking her pioneering practice to a new audience when she jets to Bangalore.

During her nine-day stay she and a team of fellow canine professionals will be teaching the techniques of Galen Myotherapy to a vet and dog trainer, and holding workshops for pet owners to give them a better understanding of their pup’s anatomy.

The team will also be conducting a study of street dogs, measuring their postures and taking note of their behaviour in a ‘natural’ environment. They will then be comparing their results with that of dogs living in a domestic environment.

Julia, who has a background in farming and veterinary nursing, said: “My mission, through Galen Myotherapy, is to help as many dogs as possible tormented by underlying pain, arthritis and repetitive strain injuries (RSI) – all of which can be suffered in silence.

“I treat hundreds of dogs every year with such conditions, all of whom live in a domestic environment. I hope that by studying street dogs in a natural pack environment the team and I can further our understanding of canine posture and behaviour.

“If these street dogs tend to suffer less from conditions such as arthritis and RSI, for example, we can look into these traits further to see how they might benefit our beloved pets at home.”

Julia established the Galen Therapy Centre in 2002 and since then has built up a network of myotherapists who work across the UK and abroad. She has also become an in-demand speaker at canine events across the globe.

The India trip will be the biggest project she and the team have ever undertaken and will bring Galen Myotherapy to new audience. Julia and her colleagues are providing all training and workshops in India for free and have been fundraising to help cover their travel costs and expenses.

The team are on course to hit their £2,700 target but are still appealing for donations.

“We are all very much looking forward to travelling to India, which will be a first for many of us, and meeting many new dogs and their owners,” Julia added.

“Our supporters have been wonderful in helping us with our fundraising but any other contributions will be gratefully received.”

Buyers from around the globe meet British pet firms

Innovative products shown by the UK exhibitors at Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, in the group organised by PetQuip, attracted a wide audience from worldwide markets...

A number of the first-time pet product firms returning from the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, have expressed interest already in exhibiting at the show again next year.

The innovative products shown by the UK exhibitors participating in the group organised by the PetQuip association attracted a wide audience from worldwide markets.

Regular exhibitors, such as Hilton Herbs, also returned to the UK with good results, having received interest from a number of Far Eastern countries and from Finland and Puerto Rico. The company received good news too from a Canadian distributor, secured by the firm at last year’s Global Pet Expo, which is now looking to take on a much wider range of Hilton Herbs’ products.

The Oggi range of biscuits and cake mixes attracted potential interest from distributors in the US and New Zealand and from a leading Canadian retail chain.

Gilbertson and Page was delighted with its first presence at the show and were surprised to have met a number of Far Eastern contacts, while Law Print was very pleased to have met with buyers from US and Canada, Germany and Spain.

Trilanco reported that it had sales leads from Central and South American markets such as Costa Rica and Chile as well as from North America and other international markets.

Max & Lucy’s products were on display for the first time in the US and in addition to meeting with potential North American distributors, the company met with buyers from Asia and from Puerto Rico and Hungary.

Chicken Guard, another first time exhibitor, highlighted large distributors and home and farm retailers among the buyers met at the show.  The company also gained valuable information on the US market for chicken supplies during a retail tour organised as part of the show package.

The PetQuip industry information stand on the pavilion provided a valuable link between the visiting overseas buyers and the UK pet industry and attracted over 60 visitors from over 20 countries. Most were from the US and Canada, with others attending from across Latin America.  European visitors included distributors and retailers from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Finland.  Also in evidence were major distributors from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East and from the burgeoning online community in China.

The PetQuip association team, together with some of the British exhibiting group, also took part in a guided pet retail tour while in Orlando, which gave the British firms an opportunity to network with important buyers from the 10 countries that participated.

Commenting on the value of the business-creating events organised by PetQuip each year, Charlie Parker of PetQuip said:”Global Pet Expo has once again generated good international sales leads.

"During the show, one Danish distributor confirmed that it is currently working with around 10 UK companies, largely as a result of attending PetQuip ‘Meet the International Buyers’ days, and it also plans to visit the UK exhibitors at Zoomark in May this year and to attend the PATS Telford show in September.

"Several other key buyers also stated that they will be attending the Zoomark show, where PetQuip will be organising the British pavilion which will feature a record number of British exhibitors.”

Companies interested in future business-creating initiatives which are planned by PetQuip should contact either Theresa Swann theresa@petquip.com or Emma Lewis emma@petquip.com.    Telephone +44 (0) 1959 565 995.

Skinner’s Pet Food sponsors Gundog Row at the Game Fair

Skinner’s Pet Food’s long association with gundogs is set to continue, as the company has just announced its renewed sponsorship of Gundog Row at the Game Fair.

A key event at the heart of fieldsports, shooting and land management, the 2017 Game Fair will take place from the 28th - 30th July 2017 at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. This will be the 59th Game Fair and Gundog Row is a key focus throughout the 3 day event and a popular attraction for many visitors.

Skinner’s Petfood has been a major supporter of the Game Fair for many years and Will Delamore, Skinner’s Sales Director, thinks the Game Fair would have to go back a very long way indeed to find one that Skinner’s hadn’t been involved with.

He says: "We are always delighted to be involved with the Game Fair and are extremely honoured to be sponsoring their Gundog Row again. As a company we have a long history of supporting the working and gun dog communities and in fact 2017 will be the 28th year we have sponsored the England Gundog Team and 3rd year we’ve sponsored the Scottish team too.

"It has always been our aim to provide the best possible food for all active dogs and our Field & Trial range has been the perfect way to promote the link between good nutrition and happy, healthy working dogs. The Game Fair is a great way of meeting many of our customers and quite literally seeing our products in action!"

Catherine Chapman, Commercial Director of the Game Fair, added:  "We are delighted that Skinners will once again be sponsoring and showing support to Gundog Row at The Game Fair 2017 at Hatfield House. The synergy is clear; Skinner’s knowledge and experience within this sector is unquestionable. The Gundog area is always a big draw for visitors and we welcome Skinners support.’"

Spurred on by the success of Field & Trial with working dogs, Skinner’s has just announced the addition of a whole new premium range from early 2017, aimed at pets.

‘Life’ builds on Skinner’s extensive experience in developing the highest quality products for working dogs and offers a perfectly balanced, highly palatable range, using super premium ingredients, for all stages of a dog’s life.

The new Life range comprises of; Puppy, Junior, Adult and Senior, with Sensitive available for dogs with sensitive tummies needing a fully hypo allergenic option.

Skinner’s Petfood’s new Life range launches in 12.5kg and 2.5kg bag sizes. The 2.5kg bags are re-sealable, for added convenience and freshness.

PetSmart to acquire online pet store Chewy.com

American pet supplies retailer PetSmart revealed this week it has agreed to acquire Chewy.com, a fast-growing online retailer of pet supplies.

PetSmart didn't disclose the terms of the deal, but Recode valued it at $3.35 billion. The deal is expected to close at the end of the second fiscal quarter of 2017.

Since its founding in 2011, Dania Beach, Florida-based Chewy.com has attracted 3 million customers and counts 4,000 employees among its workforce, according to the South Florida Business Journal. The company was rumoured to be going public this year.

Chewy.com will largely operate as an independent subsidiary of PetSmart after the deal closes.
Pet shop owner fined for selling puppy illegally
A pet shop owner who forged an underage puppy's passport and sold the animal online to an unsuspecting Plymouth couple has been fined more than £3,000 by a court...
A pet shop owner who forged an underage puppy's passport and sold the animal online to an unsuspecting Plymouth couple has been fined more than £3,000 by a court.

Artur Zuchowicz, 33, from Carmarthenshire in Wales, was convicted of two offences after placing a misleading advert on gumtree.com.

Plymouth Magistrates' Court heard the French bulldog puppy was not ready for re-homing as it was too young to have had a valid rabies jab.

The puppy was sold with a pet passport containing a fake date of birth.

Puppies under the age of 15 weeks are not allowed to be imported into the UK, as the earliest age they can be given a rabies vaccination is 12 weeks.

A further three week period must elapse before they can enter the UK.

The dog in this case was estimated to be between nine and 12 weeks old.

Plymouth magistrates fined Zuchowicz a total of £3,421 including £405 for each offence, £1,748 costs and a victim surcharge of £40.

A compensation order of £823 was awarded to the purchasers of the puppy.

Plymouth City Council's trading standards team said the advert failed to state that the defendant was a trader – a banned practice under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations – and that the puppy was ready for rehoming on February 25, 2016.

The council had to take the puppy from the purchasers and quarantine it so the proper vaccinations could be given.

After the quarantine period was over, the dog was returned to its owners, but died several months later after suffering seizures.

33-year-old Zuchowicz pleaded guilty to the two offences and said in mitigation that he felt guilty and it will not happen again.

He no longer has a pet shop licence nor sells dogs. He is now a fisherman.

Cllr Lynda Bowyer said: "Cases like this are really upsetting because ultimately it's the poor dogs that suffer.

"I don't think people realise that by paying a bargain price for a designer dog you may be paying for a puppy that has been brought into this country illegally, which has possibly been bred on a puppy farm and taken away from their mothers too young, leaving them susceptible to illness.

"These puppies are often sold via adverts on the internet and in newspaper small ads. The dogs are accompanied by incomplete, false and forged documentation which lead buyers to believe they have been imported legally or bred in the UK."

If you have any concerns about a puppy you have bought, call Citizen's Advice consumer service on 03434 040506.

Only 33% of retailers believe staff take cybersecurity seriously
The government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey: 2017, released on Wednesday, demonstrates UK business’ soft underbelly when it comes to cyber-attack vulnerability...
The government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey: 2017, released on Wednesday, demonstrates UK business’ soft underbelly when it comes to cyber-attack vulnerability.

According to the report, only 33% of retail executives think their core staff take cyber security seriously in their day-to-day work.

Across other business sectors, this figure stands at over three quarters (76%).

A headlong leap into poorly-defined IoT projects and BYOD working practices may be putting more firms in danger of an attack, according to systems integrator World Wide Technology.

The report shows that 46% of UK businesses are exposed to the security risks of BYOD, rising to 57% in web-orientated firms. After a 12 month period that saw a range of high-profile victims, such as Amazon Web Services and Samsung, retailers need to adapt to the new security demands of an increasingly connected world.

Mike McGlynn, Vice President, Security Solutions at World Wide Technology, comments: “The range of devices being exposed to the internet are usually not known for having mature security software, and are often in a vulnerable state. Even their manufacturers may not be in a position to regularly patch software in order to protect against online threats, let alone the enterprises that adopt these devices.

“The device management task involved in some IoT projects is on a scale unlike anything most retailer’s networks have tackled so far.

“Currently, most device management applications are designed for tablets and smartphones which have much more predictable behaviour. They now suddenly have to deal with the number and variety of devices being connected: a smart building initiative, which uses sensors in one fixed location, creates a very different security challenge than a global supply chain project.

“Bring Your Own Device has certainly proved a challenge for many organisations, but the predicted explosion of connected devices – to reach 20.8 billion globally by 2020 – means that retail businesses must take a holistic approach to cybersecurity which prepares them to resist attacks at the endpoint, network, cloud, and application layers.”

Animal Supply Company (ASC), an American leader in pet food and supplies distribution, intends to acquire the assets of Lads Pet Supplies, which is headquartered in Angola, New York.

Pet owners face painful vet charges as average bills top £750
Animal lovers face a sharp hike in veterinary charges with the average bill topping £750 for the first time...
Animal lovers face a sharp hike in veterinary charges with the average bill topping £750 for the first time.

Bills have risen almost 5% from £721 in 2015 to £757 last year with owners making a record 2,500 claims on their pet insurance policies every day.

Insurers paid out a record £706 million last year to help owners cope with unexpected costs said the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Claims and costs are rising as the range of veterinary treatments increases and fees continue to soar.

One owner claimed £366 to treat a cat with lethargy while another claimed £3,400 to treat an English springer spaniel that swallowed one tiny grass seed.

Unusual claims included £1,600 to treat a cocker spaniel that swallowed a turkey baster on Christmas Day, £468 for a white cockatoo with respiratory problems and £790 for a Burmese python with anorexia.

The average cost of treating a tumour for a cat is £687, rising to £1,060 for diabetes.

ABI general insurance policy adviser Rebecca Hollingsworth thinks that owning a pet can be rewarding but also costly.

“There is no NHS for pets and veterinary treatment can quickly run into thousands of pounds with rising costs and a greater range of medical treatments now available,” she said.

However, the majority of pet owners are not insuring their pets.

Just 30% of the UK’s 8.5 million dog owners take cover, falling to 16% of 7.5 million cat owners, leaving them exposed to shock bills.

Happy Rabbit project aimed at improving pet welfare

Two Dutch groups have launched the Happy Rabbit project which encourages staff at pet shops and garden centres to tell potential owners how to take better care of their pets.

The organisations – animal welfare group Dierenbescherming and pet trade association Dibevo – say better information could also prevent people buying a rabbit on impulse, they say.

Rabbits are currently the fourth most popular pet in the Netherlands – there are some 1.2 million of them living in Dutch households – but owners are often unaware of their needs, the organisations say. According to their research, some 63% of rabbits are living alone.

The groups call their cooperation with the pet shop industry ‘quite unique’. But in the end the health and well-being of animals is an interest both partners have in common.

Eukanuba donates over 150 bags of food to charity

Eukanuba has donated over 150 bags of dog food to Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue charity as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare.

The charity that prides itself on rescuing, recovering and rehoming unwanted dogs, will benefit from the generous donation of Eukanuba dog food. Eukanuba provides 100% complete and balanced high quality nutrition tailored to fuel a dog through each life stage.

Giuliano Buccino, Head of Marketing for EUKANUBA UK and Ireland comments: “We are delighted to be able to support the Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue charity by feeding their brave rescue dogs.

"With hundreds of dogs in need of good homes and care, it’s so important that charities are given the support they need to flourish.

"The team at Valgray’s work relentlessly to rehome and protect dogs in vulnerable situations and we wanted not only to make a large food donation but also to raise awareness of the work they do and show our support.”

Many of the dogs that come to the rescue centre are in need of care and rehabilitation so by providing them with appropriate high quality nutrition they can build strength to live a long, healthy and happy life.

The impact of Eukanuba along with appropriate care was discovered over a 10 + year observation and the results were unprecedented – nearly 90% of Labrador Retrievers fed Eukanuba, together with appropriate care, lived beyond the breed’s typical twelve years life expectancy, some of them living 30% longer.

Val Phillips, Founder of Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue commented: “We would like to thank everyone at Eukanuba for supporting our charity by giving our dogs a high quality, nutritious diet to enable them to achieve their full potential to live a long, happy and healthy life with their new family.

"The food donation from Eukanuba means that we can invest funds into other areas, particularly animal welfare, to enable us to help even more rescue animals that are in desperate need for a new and loving home.”

It joins the popular FELIWAYCLASSIC (F3 pheromone) and FELIWAY FRIENDS (cat appeasing pheromone) ranges.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is a synthetic copy of the feline interdigital semiochemical (FIS) naturally produced by cats and is the only product clinically proven to help redirect scratching behaviour onto a desired location.

It helps control both vertical and horizontal scratching and helps prevent inappropriate scratching with newly adopted cats or kittens.

It is available in a pack of nine single use 5ml pipettes which should be applied on a scratching post to redirect the scratching.

The product uniquely attracts cats in three ways, the blue staining mimics the visual message (scratch marks), catnip helps attract the cat to the scratching post, while the pheromone directs cat scratching on the surface where the product has been applied. It is easy to use and one pack lasts for up to four weeks.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY can be used alongside FELIWAY CLASSIC if the owner is experiencing stress-related scratching or alongside FELIWAY FRIENDS for conflicts in the home.

“Scratching is a major problem in cat owning households with many owners experiencing damaged carpets, sofas and other household furniture,” comments Claire Russell, pheromone product manager at Ceva Animal Health.

“FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY can help redirect scratching onto a desired location, such as a scratching post, and can be used in conjunction with FELIWAY CLASSIC and FELIWAY FRIENDS to help prevent other stress-related behaviours.”

Ceva Animal Health has launched a range of marketing material to support the launch of FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY including a pet owner leaflet, posters, wobblers and a digital pack containing social media posts, product pack shots, logo and videos.
