New jobs created with pet food company's £6m expansion
The Real Petfood Company is set to create new jobs in a major £6million expansion following the purchase of the second manufacturing unit created by the Welsh Government at the former Hotpoint site at Bodelwyddan in Denbighshire. The business aims to create a further 20 jobs within two years and envisages the workforce growing to 100 employees after 5 years.
The business, which specialises in manufacturing premium pet food snacks and treats under the Wagg and Harringtons brands, plans to relocate from its existing manufacturing base 15 miles away in Flint where it employs 30 people.
The parent company, Inspired Pet Nutrition Ltd, which is headquartered in North Yorkshire, is the UK’s largest independent producer of dry pet food. It is investing some £6 million in acquiring, re-furbishing and re-equipping the 8-acre 130,000 sq ft site.
The new equipment – which is being installed in August will mean the business can operate a continuous production process rather than the batch system it uses currently. The new equipment is expected to be commissioned in late 2016 which will be followed by the transfer and installation of the existing packing and production equipment. All the current employees at Flint are expected to move to the new location.
Graham Wheeler, managing director of the Real Petfood Co said: “The Real Petfood Company was established in North Wales 17 years ago and I am really pleased that we are able to continue growing and evolving in the same area. This is a very significant investment in the business which will boost our production capacity by some 600%.”
Economy Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates said: “The decision by the Welsh Government to buy the site and bring it back into employment use is supporting business growth, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.
“I am delighted The Real Petfood Company can now expand, create new jobs and increase capacity to meet the growing national and international demand for its products. The company’s major investment in Bodelwyddan is a strong mark of confidence in manufacturing in Wales and it’s great news that it aims to increase its workforce in the near future, with potential for further expansion.”
The Hotpoint site had been empty for eight years when the Welsh Government acquired the site in 2014 site to bring it back into employment use.
Denbighshire County Council has also played a prominent role in the proceedings, advising on technical issues and co-ordinating communication between interested stakeholders early on in the deliberations. The Council will continue to work closely with the company in the coming months, to assist the company in making a smooth transition to their new operations.
Stephen Wade, director of Legatt Owen, the agents acting on behalf of the Welsh Government, said: “I would like to congratulate the Council for the pro-active way in which they have engaged with the purchaser and responded to their initial request for detailed information in relation to the building and surrounding areas.
Councillor Hugh Evans OBE, Leader of Denbighshire County Council said: “The Council has worked closely with the Welsh Government, their letting agents and the company itself to secure the company’s new presence in Denbighshire.
“The Council has adopted a brand new approach to handling investment enquiries, with the aim of turning those enquiries into real expressions of interest and successfully attracting new business into Denbighshire. In this instance we have brought together a range of Council services into discussions, met the investors and have provided important advice and assurance around their investment.
“Developing the local economy is one of the Council’s key priorities and we are delighted that our efforts to co-ordinate discussions have led the company to agree to locate in Denbighshire.
“The work of supporting potential inward investors complements the Council’s efforts to get more people into work, increasing household incomes in the county and supporting a healthy private business sector. This development will make a valuable contribution to developing the economy of Denbighshire”.

A number of junior bankers at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leaving to work in the pet food industry...
The latest to go the banking-to-pet food route is Michael Rose, a former analyst in Morgan Stanley’s UK M&A team.
Rosen spent two years working for Morgan Stanley after leaving Warwick University in 2014. Two years later he’s off to Berlin to work as senior business manager for Pets Deli, a company which describes its mission as providing ‘our four-legged customers with species-appropriate and healthy pet food’.
Rose is following in the footsteps of Kevin Glynn and David Nolan, a former Goldman Sachs associate and Goldman sales trader respectively, who quit the firm in March to set up Butternut Box, a healthy dog food delivery firm.
What makes pet food so popular? Rose didn’t immediately respond to our enquiry, but Glynn and Nolan spelled it out to the Irish Independent in May. “People consider pets like a member of a family, and our whole ethos was they should be fed as such, and when we looked around, what we saw was that when you generally go into a supermarket, you’d be picking up a can of pet food beside a washing up detergent – there was no love behind it…,” said Nolan. Basically, pet food was a neglected market.
Butternut box produces beef, chicken, turkey, lentil and flaxseed dog dishes that can be stored in the fridge. Pets Deli produces a range of foods that include ostrich cookies and bio spinach bites.
Banks are already struggling to retain their junior staff. Now they have new rivals to add to the private equity funds, hedge funds, and tech firms who want their 20-somethings.

Pet firm's expansion could lead to extra jobs
Inspired Pet Nutrition, formerly known as Wagg Foods, has fitted a conveyor system to improve deliveries, and bosses say the move will help take the business’ workload from 40 pallets an hour to around 75. Inspired Pet Nutrition, formerly known as Wagg Foods, has fitted a conveyor system to improve deliveries, and bosses say the move will help take the business’ workload from 40 pallets an hour to around 75. The system also offers potential to recruit up to 50 workers in the coming years.
The investment comes just weeks after the company, based at Dalton Airfield, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, opened a £7m distribution hub.
The 100,000sq ft site can house at least 11,500 pallets, which officials say allows for faster order processing.
George Page, operations director, said the conveyor will be linked to the firm’s nine production lines and cut the need for forklift movements as it will direct deliveries to one collection point.
He said: “Previously there was a lot of manual double handling as pallets were collected from individual packing lines and stacked in the factory before being moved again for despatch.
“Now there is just a single collection point from where bagged goods are shunted straight to the distribution centre.
“They are then automatically unloaded directly into a racking system that prepares loads for despatch.”
The business is the UK’s largest independent dry pet food maker, supplying meals and treats for dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters under the Wagg and Harringtons brands.

Blackburn-based pet food manufacturer Pets Choice has installed a number of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) devices on to several of its sites, after an incident where a staff member went into cardiac arrest while at work.
The incident, which happened earlier this year, involved an agency staff member who was unaware of an underlying heart condition. The member of staff collapsed while working on site and two Pets Choice trained first aiders immediately went to her aid and started resuscitation.
While the member of staff has now made a full recovery, Pets Choice have since installed three AED devices on each of their Blackburn sites to ensure that should an incident happen again, they are fully prepared.
Operations director Peter Birch commented: “The two staff members who helped resuscitate the young woman did a fantastic job and we couldn’t be prouder. She is now fully recovered and receiving treatment for a heart condition that until now she was unaware of. Installing the AED devices ensures that should an incident like this happen again, along with continuing to train our first aiders, we are fully prepared.”
The devices have also been registered with the local ambulance trust so that local residents have access to them should an emergency arise.
Peter continued: “By registering the AED devices with Broughton ambulance trust , 999 operators can quickly identify the nearest location while someone is on the phone in the case of an emergency.
"If a member of the public witnesses or finds someone who has had a cardiac arrest performing CPR and using a defibrillator could help save their life. The AEDs do not require any training, instead you just follow the voice commands making it clear and easy for anyone to use.”

Tetra has teamed up with Aquatic Design Centre to create an exclusive underwater experience in London’s Old Street Underground Station.
Open to the public for one week only, The Tetra Tranquillity Tank, a custom built serene aquatic pop-up experience, will inject an element of calm into the chaos of the daily underground commute.
Bespoke aquariums will house turtles, catfish, red crabs and angel fish alongside a host of other beautiful species and plant life.
Offering a complete sensory experience, visitors can unwind in relaxing seating whilst listening to therapeutic, underwater sounds in an environment that reflects the tranquillity of an aquarium, created by water projections, special effect lighting, plants and the scent of freshly brewed herbal tea.
With half of Londoners (50%) claiming to have less than one hour of ‘me time’ each day, the Tetra Tranquillity Tank will offer commuters time out during their daily routine.
Giuliano Buccino, Head of Marketing at Tetra, said: “We’re very excited to launch our underground, underwater experience which will offer Londoners a break from the hustle and bustle of city life.
"Not only is the pop-up an opportunity for visitors to experience the serene environment aquariums can create it also highlights their versatility.
"Whether consumers are looking for a striking piece of aquatic art or their own relaxation room there really is an option for everyone no matter how much experience they have.
"At Tetra we work hard to make fishkeeping easy, safe and more enjoyable than ever, with a huge part of this being education and innovation to make the hobby as accessible as possible, helping to make sure people and families can easily access the benefits to keeping and enjoying a pet.”
With four in five (79.8%) Brit’s claiming to be under pressure every day, it’s not just London residents that can benefit from fishkeeping. And considering 24% of UK adults are clinically obese, it’s hardly surprising to find that our favoured stress relief is comfort food and treats.
Alcohol, smoking and boxset binging are all among the top stress relievers. Clearly stress has an impact on our overall health and wellbeing; lack of sleep (51%), feeling run down (45%) and general health (29%) are the top three things to suffer due to stress according to Tetra’s findings.
Open until today, the Tetra Tranquillity Tank aims to offer a calming environment where the public can be inspired to think about setting up an aquarium in their home.
During the week visitors will be able to learn more about aquariums, the best type of fish for beginners, and the products and solutions available which help to make fishkeeping an even more enjoyable hobby by reducing the amount of time needed for maintenance.
From Monday 12th – Thursday 15th September Tetra is also welcoming local business to use the space for meetings. For more information or to register interest please contact TetraTranquillityTank@speedcomms.com. For more information about Tetra and its range of aquariums please visit http://www.tetra.net/en or join the conversation with Tetra UK on Facebook.

It’s not only the brand’s products that have the industry singing its praises - it’s the company’s whole ethos around animal wellbeing. For example, Bring Your Dog to Work Day - a charity initiative created by HOWND - has given the company national recognition as a caring brand, resulting in the company being selected as a finalist for a PetQuip marketing award.
HOWND will showcase at PATS its range of Cruelty Free certified dog grooming products, which include: HOWND Conditioning Shampoos (250ml), HOWND Body Mists (250ml), HOWND Professional Conditioning Shampoos (5L), HOWND Yup You Stink! Emergency Dog Wipes - and HOWND Natural Fragrances For Him & Her.

Designed to be gentle on a dog’s skin and coat, each wipe is infused with orange (insect-repelling), coriander (antioxidant) and bergamot (deodorising) essential oils, aloe vera juice, and gentle odour control agents.
The result is a durable wipe, that effectively cleans off fox poo, cow dung, mud, urine, slobber and anything else that’s grimey or smelly. HOWND Yup You Stink! Emergency Dog Wipes are available to the trade in 10 pack cases with trade prices starting at £16. The RRP per pack of wipes is £2.95.
Covering ‘Puppyhood’ to ‘Golden Oldies’

It also relieves dry flakey skin and helps reduce shedding and scratching.

Endorsements
These products have captured the imagination of some of the UK’s leading professional dog groomers.
“Our groomers love working with HOWND. We’re big fans of Yup You Stink! Conditioning Shampoo. It reduces drying time by 50%, which is incredible considering we groom up to 16 dogs a day. Keep Calm Conditioning Shampoo also cuts drying time by half and works wonders for double coated breeds, such as German Shepherds and Newfoundlands,” says Martin Jakubowski of London’s Just Barking.
Award winning groomer, Louisa Tandy, says: “Just to say how much I loved your Golden Oldies shampoo. I used it on the salon as a special treat for some of our more mature dogs and they loved it. Really helped the coat condition and smelt gorgeous too. Lathered up great and was easy to wash out, which when bathing elderly dogs, is important to keep the grooming process as stress free as possible so less time in the bath is a bonus. Wonderful product!”

A tasty antidote to over-priced pet snacks
The Dog Treat Company (DTC) returns to PATS (E63) at the end of an especially successful year that has seen this Devon-based business’s unrivalled reputation for superior dog snacking spread far beyond our shores to global markets as diverse as South Korea, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the United States...
The Dog Treat Company (DTC) returns to PATS (E63) at the end of an especially successful year that has seen this Devon-based business’s unrivalled reputation for superior dog snacking spread far beyond our shores to global markets as diverse as South Korea, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the United States.
In these more health-conscious times, when ‘hot’ topics like rising human obesity, ingredient integrity, food label literacy, GMOs and ‘free-from’ are increasingly being discussed and debated, it makes complete sense that our four legged-friends’ dietary requirements are also starting to be scrutinized like never before.
With dog obesity in the ascendancy and too many mass market dogs treats still consisting of over-processed, inferior-grade meats, synthetic scents, lurid artificial colours, inappropriate grains, and masking salts/sugars, it’s not surprising to learn that an all-natural, sustainably-sourced operation like The Dog Treat Company (DTC) is quickly securing a significant loyalist following.
This is one DEFRA-approved operation that sources all its core ingredients from the UK. Its eggs and chicken liver are free-range and locally-sourced whilst the beneficial herbs, (central to each recipe’s distinct tastes and associated health benefits) are GMO-free and non-irradiated.
Having first made its name in highly desirable graze-style, home delivery snack boxes for the well-heeled pooch, this family-owned operation has quickly extended its operation by taking its quirky sense of humour and art deco pack designs into a series of highly collectible ‘treat tins’ covering every conceivable pet priority: Take My Breath Away, Run Free & Fabulous Fur to more specific human special occasions: God Save The Corgi (Queen’s 90th) and Woofarendum (Brexit vote).
Throw in the fact that DTC has recently been shortlisted for a Pet Quip award, aligned themselves with pet horoscope heavyweight Russell Grant and begun forging friendships with a number of like-minded style brands (e.g. Pet’s Corner, Orvis stores) and you start to appreciate how this brand’s appeal is gaining momentum in every imaginable pet-friendly environment from pet-friendly pubs, garden centres and boutique hotels to holidays escapes and independent pet food chains.
More and more dog owners are deciding that their pet’s taste buds should no longer be taken for granted.

Sometimes the moment just seems right which is why we decided that 2016 was the perfect moment to attend our first PATS show (stand A2) , joining a number of the new generation of superior, nutritionally-dense pet foods that are in tune with the thinking of increasingly health-conscious pet owners.
Cotswold RAW is proud of its role as an ambassador for countryside common sense acting as a passionate rural voice (local sourcing & traceability) in a blossoming product sector historically dominated by large corporates and a Home Counties dominated pet scene.
Recently shortlisted for ‘Prestigious Rural Business and Pet Quip awards, Cotswold RAW is a small dynamic team with a strong track record in innovation which in 2016 includes, snappy transparent packaging (in stark contrast to traditional ‘no peeking’ ice cream tubs that dominate the ‘raw scene, their first of many puppy propositions and an extended portfolio of alternative protein pet foods (e.g. turkey & tripe) because chicken isn’t for everyone and even chicken lovers like a little variety from time to time.
At the very pinnacle of Cotswold RAW successes in 2016 has been their recently completed series of inspiring county shows (June-September) which enabled the Cotswold RAW squad to discuss and debate premium tier pet food with the same animal-loving community who helped shape the whole Cotswold RAW offer 18 mths earlier.
At the heart of Cotswold’s success has been their ground-breaking sausage sub-range which marries nutritional integrity with convenience, foodiness and portion control, the perfect stepping stone from bland, nutritionally vacant kibble to more mainstream raw minces.

Belgium company Edgard & Cooper is bringing its delicious recipes for dogs, that contain only 100% fresh meat and 100% natural ingredients, to the UK! The company has recently set up its UK headquarters in London.
After Edgard and Cooper both struggled to digest other dog food products, which also made Edgard sick, their owners decided that every pet deserves to eat fresh. And so they developed the world’s first fresh meat kibble. The market is dominated by dog food that contains meat meal, which is low in digestibility and biological value compared to fresh meat.
Jurgen Degrande, Manager at Edgard & Cooper explains: "Meat meal is actually offal being worked intensively to a powder. And yet it is often presented as ‘real meat’. At Edgard & Cooper, we believe dog food must be made from fresh cuts of meat and recognizable natural ingredients, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables.”
Soon to be available in the UK are a range of grain-free, gluten-free and even organic kibbles, tins and cups. Every bowl bursts with tasty veggies, berries and herbs, giving your dog all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants they need to keep them healthy from nose to tail.
Edgard & Cooper was founded in Belgium by three enthusiastic entrepreneurs: Koen Bostoen, Louis Chalabi, and Jurgen Degrande. Their inspiration to create 100% fresh products came from their own dogs, Edgard and Cooper, who struggled to digest other dog food products on the market.
Edgard & Cooper have a range of delicious meat meal free kibbles, tins, and cups, and have grain-free, gluten-free and organic recipes. They set up their UK headquarters September 2016 to further their mission to help all dogs enjoy tasty and healthy food.
They donate 10% of all profits to dog charities around the world, and their packaging is made of 100% biodegradable materials, printed with 100% water-based inks without chemicals, making them fully compostable.

Benyfit Natural has become one of the fastest growing raw food manufacturers to hit the market in the last 12 months. They are rapidly increasing their number of retailers across the UK and their freezer deals are proving to be very popular. Their stockists tell them that they simply cannot keep up with the demand for their delicious recipes. They have entered their raw food recipes in to four separate entries in the New Products Awards at PATS and visitors will also have the opportunity win one of their small freezers in a free prize draw on their stand or to get £100 of extra stock when they order a 5ft freezer at the show. At Benyfit Natural they believe in the old adage that you only get out what you put in and that this certainly applies when it comes to dog nutrition which is why they and their team have developed a range of recipes that combine the right balance of quality raw ingredients, vitamins and minerals to maintain the health, vitality and bounce of any dog. Their company’s founder, Ben Van Praagh, is himself a leading gundog trainer who has competed across the UK with his dogs in gundog trials but he is also a qualified chef, having trained at Crawley College. With his belief that a balanced diet leads to balanced behaviour, he has been able to combine his understanding of training dogs with his nutritional background in order to produce a range of foods that are not only natural but are also nutritionally balanced and biologically appropriate. The feeding of a raw bone and raw meat diet is thought to have many health benefits including helping to prevent ear and gland infections, skin allergies, diabetes, heart and joint problems. The feeding of raw bones is also good for the health of a dog’s teeth and gums. The Benyfit Natural complete raw food recipes which are suitable for all adult dogs, use a variety of ethically sourced and Defra approved British human grade meats such as chicken, turkey and beef as well as tripe. They also contain ground bones, carrot, broccoli, swede, offal, flaxseed oil, kelp and herbs as well as raw eggs all of which offer a natural combination of vitamins, minerals, omega oils and amino acids to produce a healthy skin, coat, joints, thyroid and cell production as well as helping to support the immune system. The adult food is coarsely minced to provide the texture that dogs like. All varieties are designed to help maintain a healthy weight for an adult dog and are veterinary approved and were developed by Ben with the help of their team of advises who include veterinary surgeons, animal nutritionists and behaviourists. They have recently brought out new packaging. Theirr new tubs which are BPA free to avoid leakage of any nasty toxins are made from recycled materials and are recyclable. Available in 500g and 1kg sizes, they can be conveniently stored in the freezer with the meat contents easy to portion out. They have also made sure that there is no soggy food of icy film on the top by blast-freezing the contents so that the texture and taste remains - a major selling point of the range.

Seven crews worked overnight to battle a blaze at a pet shop in the village of Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex.Crews from across the county helped fight the flames at Pierpoint Pet Supplies in High Street on Friday. The blaze broke out on the ground floor of the 22m x 21m building at around 2.50pm. The fire service said it then spread to the back roof of a neighbouring shop. Crews had to cut into the roof using chainsaws to access the flames. A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said 50% of the pet shop and 100% of the neighbouring shop’s roof were ‘severely damaged’ by the flames. The basement and first floor of the building were also damaged by smoke and water. No-one was hurt in the blaze and no animals were harmed. The flats above the building also escaped damage, the spokesman added. Thirty eight breathing apparatus were used in extinguishing the fire along with two covering jets, three hose reels and multiple thermal imaging cameras to check for heat hotspots. Two fog nozzles and a high pressure lance - all used to fit through smaller gaps to put out flames - were also used. Crews left the scene at 5am the following morning. Fire inspection officers returned half an hour later and worked until 9.30am to try and establish the cause. The fire service said it had not yet confirmed the cause but said it was being treated as an accident.

URICA, the government-backed early payment network for SMEs, has joined forces with the PetQuip and Gardenex associations to help give their members access to cash. For those businesses, there is no risk, zero debt, and no fear of late or non-payment of their invoices any longer.Through this new partnership, URICA can now let PetQuip and Gardenex members use their online platform, allowing them to get their customer invoices paid in cash as early as the day after approval. URICA’s unique early payment offering means businesses can trade on the terms that suit their business. All businesses need to do is send their invoices online via URICA, and receive cash payment on those invoices once URICA has confirmed payment from the customer. The customer then pays URICA the entire value of the invoice, up to 90 days after the original invoice date. In total, URICA is now in the position to pay PetQuip and Gardenex members a total of £72m in cash, tomorrow. A critical advantage of URICA’s support for PetQuip and Gardenex members is access to their global partners, and in particular Euler Hermes, for credit checking of existing and new customers both in the UK and internationally, helping protect their businesses from commercial risks. This partnership with URICA ensures PetQuip and Gardenex members have cutting edge solutions to finance, risk and credit insurance. The Federation of Garden and Leisure Manufacturers was established in 1961. It assists and supports its members in exporting, and helps international trade buyers find good quality British products. It also protects its members’ interests by making representations to government on legislation and public matters affecting those companies’ business interests. Its members are British manufacturers and designers of gardening and leisure equipment, growers, garden centre designers and pet care products. The partnership with URICA represents the continued effort of PetQuip and Gardenex to support and promote their members’ interests, and the garden and leisure and pet care product manufacturing sectors as a whole. Of the partnership, Lindsay Whitelaw, Founder & Chairman of URICA, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with PetQuip and Gardenex to help their members grow and thrive. They do an incredibly important job in supporting those small companies who make up the garden and leisure manufacturing sector, which in turn is so vital to the UK economy as a whole. In an increasingly tough and globalised economy, and with the banks unable to provide the support that is needed, we aim to make sure smaller businesses can grow, employ more staff, export and thrive, but freeing them from the burden of late payment. We are thrilled to be doing this for PetQuip and Gardenex members and look forward to working with them for the foreseeable future.” Amanda Sizer Barrett, Director General of PetQuip and Gardenex, said: “The current economic environment means that our members are often confronted with challenging and unwelcome hurdles that detract from the day-today running of their business. What we’ve tried to ensure with this partnership is that those companies we support are unburdened from one of the biggest of these challenges – late payment and lack of cash flow. Giving them access to cash and freeing them from risk means that they can, with their often limited resources, trade on the terms they want and focus on the things that really matter to their businesses. We are therefore extremely pleased to be working with URICA and are excited to be forming what we hope will be a very long-lasting relationship.”

Beaphar sponsors exotic birds at Linton Zoo
Beaphar products have been widely used throughout Britain’s zoos, keeping rare and exotic species healthy and happy. Now the company has decided to sponsor Linton Zoo’s exotic birds
Over the years, Beaphar products have been widely used throughout Britain’s zoos, keeping rare and exotic species healthy and happy. At Linton Zoo they have been purchasing Beaphar products for over 10 years. Linton Zoo is based in Cambridge and was established in 1972 as a centre for breeding wildlife which is still the Zoo's main objective today along with conservation. Linton Zoo is home to around 250 animals from nearly 100 different species. This year, Beaphar are delighted to be sponsoring Linton Zoo’s exotic birds; Channel Billed Toucans, Trumpeter Hornbills and White-cheeked Turacos. Beaphar have sponsored a year’s supply of Beaphar Universal Food which is a complete food suitable for Toucans, Turacos and Hornbills. The sponsorship was set up through Linton Zoo’s Species Support Scheme. The Species Support Scheme enables you to contribute directly to the conservation of a species. By contributing towards the yearly cost of food for a particular species, it enables Linton Zoo to use the extra finance that comes through the gate for future developments and to enhance the breeding programmes along with maintaining high standards. ‘We are thrilled to be sponsoring Linton Zoo’s exotic birds. Some of these are classed as vulnerable species and so it is important to us to seek opportunities where we can, to help make a difference, along with supporting a fantastic local business’, says Roland Huggett, Sales Manager for Beaphar UK who is pictured making friends with Marvina, the White-cheeked Turaco.
