The most clicked video featured in Pet Trade Xtra throughout the year was Lily’s Kitchen's 30-second TV advert, entitled ‘Christmas Every Day’, which was shown on SKY throughout November.
The advert features a montage of happy cats and dogs from real pet parents across the country to show how pets bring the joy of Christmas every single day of the year – not just during the festive season.
The advert stitches together real-life footage shared by real Lily’s Kitchen customers and its charity partners Dogs Trust and London Inner City Kitties (L.I.C.K.), to highlight the ways our pets show us affection and how they make every day special for pet parents – from excited, morning kisses to mid-morning mischief, enthusiastic welcome home greetings, dinner dances and cuddles on the sofa.
Proving the joy these moments bring us, pet parents ranked their pet greeting them when they get home from work (34%), their pet waking them up in the morning (29%) and snuggling with their pet on the sofa (31%) among their top three moments of the day.
With using business as a force for good at the heart of the brand’s ethos, the homage to the nation’s four-legged friends was created to raise awareness of Lily’s Kitchen’s charity partnerships with Dogs Trust and L.I.C.K. this Christmas – partnerships that will help pets in need. 100% of profits from the sale of the Limited Edition Three Bird Feast for dogs and Turkey Feast Paté for cats will be donated to support the charities’ important work this Christmas, helping to find dogs in Dogs Trust’s care the loving homes they deserve, and providing for much needed feline medical care for the cats looked after by L.I.C.K.
Pet parents can celebrate their four-legged family members and return some of the joy they bring us every day, by treating them to proper food made from natural ingredients. Christmas is a perfect time to gather the family to enjoy a delicious feast together and Lily’s Kitchen is here to make sure your four-legged members can enjoy the festivities too.
Samantha Crossley, UK Marketing Director at Lily’s Kitchen, said: “Pet parents everywhere will understand the joy that having a cat or dog in your life brings you every single day – for our pets, the excitement of spending another day with their humans is as magical as that feeling of waking up on Christmas morning! And this year we wanted to celebrate that feeling by showcasing these moments of happiness through the eyes of real pet parents across the country. From excited, morning kisses to the first tail wag of the day, dinner dances, ‘making biscuits’ and cuddles on the sofa – these are moments that matter. So, celebrate your four-legged family this Christmas, and every day of the year.”

Pet food and wellbeing company Bella & Duke is celebrating after a record-breaking year as the UK’s leading subscription raw pet food company. As well as a number of recent award wins, significant investment in machinery at its production and fulfillment facility and continued growth has seen the team expand to 133 employees, with several roles now available to join the growing team.
This year, Bella & Duke has delivered over 15 million of its meals across the UK.
As part of Bella & Duke’s vision of doing right by our pets, this year they have continued to support Therapy Dogs Nationwide to support the incredible work that they do and the dogs that help them do it, including sponsoring four hero therapy dogs with full Bella & Duke dog food subscriptions to keep them fuelled up and doing the best job they can. Bella & Duke also pledged to provide 11-year-old Springer Spaniel Dudley a lifetime supply of food following being saved by Second Chance Rescue after a life of neglect and abuse.
Following the growth, Mark Scott and Tony Ottley, founders of Bella & Duke, were named among the Most Ambitious Business Leaders in the UK, as one of just five businesses in Scotland named in the 2023 LDC Top 50 list. Bella & Duke were also named in the first ever 2023 Scotland Fast Growth 50 index, marking the pet wellbeing company as one of the fastest growing businesses in Scotland.
Bella & Duke were also named Manufacturer of the Year 2023 at the recent Pet Industry Federation Awards 2023. The industry awards recognise and celebrate excellence within the pet industry, showcasing the remarkable individuals and businesses who uphold the highest standards of quality that drive the industry forward. The business was also shortlisted for several other awards including new product of the year for their innovative meal topper, Magic sprinkles, and marketing campaign of the year for their Misconceptions campaign that challenged long held misconceptions about our pets and the food we feed them.
Another landmark moment for Bella & Duke this year saw the pet food and wellbeing company make their first steps into retail through a considered test with Pets at Home, being available in 25 stores.
Following the continued growth, the trailblazing pet wellness company is on the hunt for people who are passionate about animals to help Bella & Duke on its mission to improve pet nutrition and help pets live the healthy, happy and long lives they deserve. Bella & Duke is currently recruiting across engineering, marketing, and customer service, for several roles including Maintenance Engineers, Head of Customer Success, and a Marketing Executive, with more roles going live in the near future.
Office based roles will be based in Bella & Duke’s state-of-the-art Rosyth office, which opened last year and is tailored to meet the needs of both its staff and their pets. Offering flexible working options, “Parklife” is a place the team can bring their closest furry companions and be assured that they’re in the UK’s most pet friendly office.
This year, Bella & Duke also unveiled a brand refresh to better articulate their pet-centred ethos and vision of championing pet health and wellbeing and challenging the status quo so that pet-centred, species-appropriate nutrition becomes the natural choice for every pet owner.
2023 has also seen several new product launches from Bella & Duke, including Magic Sprinkles, a premium topper for dog and cat food that’s not only a tasty treat but designed to help even the fussiest of pets finish every morsel of their meals, and a new cat food product to add to their existing range of species-appropriate raw pet food.
Mark Scott, CEO at Bella & Duke, said: “We’ve always understood the importance of the relationship between pets and their owners, and this has been key to our success. Since starting Bella & Duke with Tony back in 2016 it has been a long but incredibly rewarding experience seeing our vision grow year on year, and 2023 has been no different. Our success wouldn’t be possible without the hard work all our team do each day to help us on our mission. This also wouldn’t be possible without our subscribers that have supported us throughout our journey. We want to do right by our pets and give them the healthy, happy, and long lives they deserve, and we love hearing stories from our loyal community sharing the stories of their pets’ since feeding raw. 2024 is already shaping up to be incredibly exciting for us and I can’t wait to see what it brings.”

A Christmas display, which included a miniature-sized model of former premises, has been a star festive attraction for customers of a Somerset pet store.
Wendy Robinson, a staff member at the Not Just Pets store in Frome, used a recycled doll’s house to create the replica store.
She painted it the same colour of the old shop in Iron Gates, put lights in the windows and fake snow on the roof. She even recreated the Not Just for Pets sign and included the little Iron Gate at the front.
Wendy also included toy dogs outside as well illuminating the model to make it look festive.
Owner Janine Tozer said: “Wendy did a fantastic job recreating the old store and our customers have loved it.”
Not Just Pets has also been proud to unveil its new signage at the store. “We’re very pleased with the result,” added Janine. “Workmen smoothed over the previously curved fascia to provide us with somewhere to put signage. We used N3 Display Graphics who were fantastic.”

Following on from the Everyday Essentials & Everyday Low Prices initiatives and new senior team appointments, the Vital Pet Products renaissance continues into 2024 with a new layout and focus for its promotional brochure.
Peter Brame, Group Trading Director, said: “We’ve listened to our customers. Their feedback has been that the products and promotional information wasn’t as clear as it could be. The new look promotional brochure focusses on just the key information about a product, the promotional price that a customer will pay and the POR they can expect to make, now jump off the page.”
Peter added: “Previously, the promotional price published within the brochure was based on just one of the price bands available. This meant that customers were receiving different promotional prices. Now the promotional price that is published will be available to all customers, no matter which price band they are on. Nice and simple.”
Another key change is that promotions will no longer run as periods, with start and end dates moving from month to month.
All promotions will now run from the first day to the last day of the month, allowing customers to plan both their budgets and ordering patterns.
Peter concluded: “There’s even more to come from Vital Pet Products, it’s going to be a very exciting 2024 and we’re looking forward to taking everyone on the journey with us.”
For wholesale enquiries or to request a digital copy of the new promotions brochure, contact the Vital Pet Products sales team at customerservices@vitalpets.co.uk or 01837 883000.
Jollyes, the Pet Industry Federation’s 2023 Retail Chain of the Year, has begun supplying and exchanging BillyChip in its 98 stores. Costing £2, BillyChip can be exchanged for cans of dog food for those who are homeless and have a pet...
Jollyes, the Pet Industry Federation’s 2023 Retail Chain of the Year, has begun supplying and exchanging BillyChip in its UK stores.
Jollyes will become BillyChip’s first partner outside of the food and services sector to offer this innovative street currency.
Offering a safe and secure scheme for the homeless, buying and giving a BillyChip overcomes some of the concerns people have about giving to those who are homeless and offers choice to the person using it.
This ground-breaking partnership with the Bristol-based social enterprise will see Jollyes offer BillyChip in its 98 stores. Costing £2 BillyChip can then be exchanged for cans of dog food for those who are homeless and have a pet.
BillyChips can also be given by customers to homeless people so they can exchange them in participating cafes and restaurants to meet other basic needs, such as a hot drink or meal.
While customers can purchase BillyChip and donate themselves to those living on the streets, they will also be able to deposit it in a special box at the register.
Each quarter beginning in March 2024, BillyChip and Jollyes will donate dog food using both the value of the BillyChip tokens purchased by customers with Jollyes doubling the size of the donation.
BillyChip is rapidly growing beyond its South West base, with 500 outlets in the UK, and plans to take the scheme nationwide. The ability to deposit the BillyChip at the register, safely knowing it will help the homeless with pets, will be especially valuable in those areas where the social enterprise is still building its network of businesses that accept the street currency.
The BillyChip is currently accepted in over 500 outlets in Britain, allowing the homeless to exchange a chip to buy something simple that meets their basic needs such as a hot drink or sandwich.
The addition of Jollyes stores to the BillyChip network will bring almost 100 new locations on-stream, including for the first time, Northern Ireland.
Other BillyChip regional partners include Greggs and the Central Co-op.
While numbers are hard to assess, a recent survey[1] indicated since the pandemic as many as 320,000 people experienced homelessness with between 5-25pc being homeless with a pet.
In summer 2023 the University of Bristol shared new research data that showed the homeless and their dogs have a mutually beneficial relationship, with the dogs providing critical support for their owners' emotional and mental health while owners make every effort to protect the dog and meet their welfare needs[2].
Commenting on partnership, Jon Hope, Co-Founder of BillyChip said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be working with the Jollyes team, and providing support for those with a pet who are homeless or sleeping rough.
“Our aim is to ensure that BillyChip is available in every area of the UK, and partnering with Jollyes is a fantastic step in reaching those in need to offer compassion, connection and choice.
“We can’t wait to see Jollyes customers part of the BillyChip family and making a difference for those in our communities who need help and support.”
Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes said: “We know from the donations our customers and colleagues already make to local charities, our customers are incredibly generous – pet owners will go out of their way to support other pets that need some of the love they bring to their own animals.
“That’s why we’re excited about this partnership with BillyChip – we know our customers and colleagues will understand the importance of supporting those living on the streets – and especially the animals in their care.
“And I know our store teams will work hard to share the BillyChip story and the importance of their work with customers over the months ahead.”

The UK’s leading pet healthcare product manufacturer, Johnson’s Veterinary Products, has launched a new online flea and worming training opportunity for its retail customers...
The UK’s leading pet healthcare product manufacturer, Johnson’s Veterinary Products, has launched a new online flea and worming training opportunity for its retail customers.
The free training portal, which is available to all Johnson’s stockists via their online account, has been designed to help boost or refresh retailers’ existing flea and worm knowledge, and firmly position pet stores as high street experts in tackling these common pet issues.
Paul Gwynn, Managing Director of Johnson’s explains: “When we surveyed pet owners as part of our 2023 report into purchasing habits, the results indicated a common belief amongst respondents that pet shops and stores are both ‘knowledgeable’ and had an opinion that could be trusted.
“For over 100 years we have been working hard to support the pet trade, recognising the importance that pet shops and pet stores have within the communities in which they operate. This online training tool is just another way of us pledging our commitment to them – celebrating their inherent knowledge, skills and dedication to providing the best pet care possible for their customers.
“We hope that this support will give our stockists the confidence that they are passing on the very best, up-to-date product and care information to pet owners, who in turn, can be sure that they are receiving advice from caring, knowledgeable team members.”
The free online training is designed to guide all users through a series of concise, easily memorable processes and principals, and be completed from any computer, shop or at home, as long as the pet store has a Johnson’s account (which can be simply set up via the register and login page on the Johnson’s website). All those who meet the training criteria will earn a certificate upon completion. The Johnson’s team is able to offer additional support with the training wherever needed.
Julia Lennon, Store Manager at the Ark Pet Centre in Plymouth, whose staff have already undertaken the training, said: “This new training platform has made learning about the effective treatment of fleas and worms far easier. The questionnaire format offers real, easily understandable guidance, it is simple to navigate, and it took very little time to complete, all of which shows that Johnson’s have considered what kind of learning tool would work best for us.”
Simon Lewis Dale, Head of Business Development at Cookes Pet Supplies Limited, with stores in Rotherham, Sheffield, Doncaster and Barnsley, added: “Having access to this training is a really positive step. Our team prides itself on offering the very best service it can to our customers, and as such they each jumped at the chance to brush-up on their flea and worm knowledge. Those who have already completed the training are now proudly displaying their certificates in store, which is great for staff morale, but also for customer confidence too.”
In-person training in the treatment of fleas and worms can also be arranged if required, subject to availability.

The Street Paws charity is urgently trying to raise £10,000 this Christmas to help support more homeless hostels become dog friendly.
The charity, which works with homeless people and their pets across the north of England launched the festive appeal in support of their ongoing Dog Champions Scheme.
Backed by TV star and influencer Vicky Pattison, who visited the Changing Lives hostel in Newcastle earlier this month, it is hoped that the appeal will generate much needed funds during a tough time for the charity.
With more people needing services than ever before Street Paws has worked hard to adapt its services to ensure that its good work can continue.
Dog lover Vicky, who hails from the North East won I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2015, said: "Street Paws is a small charity that is super close to my heart.
"They support homeless people and help them to find pet friendly housing through their Dog Champion Scheme. Currently around 25% of homeless people have a pet companion, however only 10% of shelters will accept animals, this means that many have to choose between their beloved pet and a safe place to sleep.
"The thought of making that decision brings tears to my eyes- I know I couldn’t leave my dogs out in the cold, could you?
"This winter Street Paws are hoping to raise £10,000 to help ten new hostels to ensure no one is left out in the cold this winter. This goal is easily achievable if we all work together."
Street Paws has been running since 2016 and works with local shelters and homeless people to provide vet treatment, training, pet supplies and support to help shelters set up to become pet friendly.
The charity partners with shelters all over the north from Newcastle to Manchester and their aim is to empower pet owners and give them the resources to make finding permanent housing possible.
Michelle Southern, founder of Street Paws, said: "Since Street Paws began the challenges are constantly evolving, and this year has been no exception.
"We are so grateful to Vicky for lending her support to the charity and the Dog Champions Scheme. By helping us to raise this money everyone who donates will be supporting us in helping ten new hostels to become dog friendly, and that is a wonderful thing for homeless people and their pets in the north of England."
Vet tech firm Vet-AI has teamed up with leading fulfilment provider Huboo to drive exponential growth of its remote services for UK pet owners...
Vet tech firm Vet-AI has teamed up with leading fulfilment provider Huboo to drive exponential growth of its remote services for UK pet owners.
Thanks to its tech-enabled approach to fulfilment, Huboo has helped Vet-AI scale the business from a digital tool supporting owners manage their pets’ health, to selling own-brand treatments and partnering with pharmaceutical companies to offer pioneering medical trials. As a result, Vet-AI is now looking to scale in Europe and the US in 2024 and beyond.
Dr Robert Dawson RCVS, vet and co-founder of Vet-AI, said: “Without a fulfilment provider it was going to be very difficult to meet owners’ needs, let alone scale our digital store to offer a wider range of treatments and pet care products. Fortunately, Huboo was able to seamlessly integrate with our operations and get our products into the warehouse and ready for delivery in no time.”
Huboo’s warehouses now hold thousands of Vet-AI treatments across 50 product lines, with Huboo’s team able to pick, pack and ship every order placed via the Joii app and digital store. In addition, pet owners can browse a vast range of supplementary pet care products from other providers, using drop-shipping to fulfil these orders.
Nizam Kabir, Head of Supply Chain, said: “People are passionate about pet health and want to be a dpart of solving the problem and improving the quality of care. With Huboo as our partner, we don’t need to worry about what happens after we recommend a treatment, and can stay focused on growing our business and supporting more pets.”
Having nurtured a vast community of pet owners, Vet-AI holds a wealth of digital insights that make it possible for the company to trial new treatments - from flea and hormone balancing treatments to medication for severe diseases such as cancer - on behalf of pharmaceutical companies.
With one successful trial under its belt and many more in the pipeline, the studies will be delivered via the app and have the potential to be Vet-AI’s biggest revenue stream outside of its consultancy business. It’s a significant growth opportunity. The trials have the power to help Vet-AI onboard even more patients while pioneering medical breakthroughs that could transform pet care.
Martin Bysh, CEO and co-founder of Huboo, added: “The pet industry was worth $235bn last year and shows no signs of slowing down but for a smaller brand starting out, the storage, packing and shipping of items can quickly feel overwhelming. It’s been such a fantastic experience supporting Vet-AI on their growth journey – we’ve tried to ease any complications by harnessing cutting-edge technology, in tandem with a team who care, to enable a productive fulfilment process.”
On the back of its stellar growth over the past few years, Vet-AI is now looking to scale globally - both in Europe and in the US. As the business continues to expand, Huboo has a key role to play supporting the ever-increasing demand for treatments and supplementary pet care products ordered through the Joii ecosystem.
Kabir concludes: “Over time, we plan to ship to more locations and across even more sale channels. For example, we’re exploring selling via TikTok Shop and Instagram while capitalising on the vast potential that AI has to offer when it comes to making a diagnosis and suggesting a course of treatment. Knowing that Huboo is by our side allows us to see the bigger picture and embark on our next exciting growth phase, all the while helping pets live longer, happier lives.”
Hamilton Specialist Referrals, a leading veterinary hospital in Buckinghamshire, which is part of the IVC Evidensia network, has successfully treated a French Bulldog for a debilitating spinal condition.
Hamilton Specialist Referrals, a leading veterinary hospital in Buckinghamshire, which is part of the IVC Evidensia network, has successfully treated a French Bulldog for a debilitating spinal condition.
The heartwarming story of Reggie's road to recovery was recently featured on the Bondi Vet channel's popular YouTube series, Vet on the Hill, which follows TV vet, Dr Scott Miller.
Earlier this year, Reggie, from Witney in Oxfordshire was referred by his daytime vet to Hamilton Specialist Referrals for complex surgery on his spine after experiencing hindlimb weakness and incoordination.
Dr Michael Hamilton and Dr Pete Smith, renowned veterinary specialists, performed the intricate procedure, which involved the use of 3D models of Reggie's spine to guide the operation and stabilise his spine.
Dr Hamilton of Hamilton Specialist Referrals, part of the IVC Evidensia referrals network, said: “I am very proud we are able to offer the most cutting-edge technologies to help our patients. Dr Smith and I are delighted to see the remarkable improvement Reggie has made since surgery.”
Reggie's story gained the attention of the Bondi Vet channel producers, which boasts 1.5 million subscribers worldwide. The episode featuring Reggie showcased the clinical skill within Hamilton’s and the compassionate care the team provided to both Reggie and his owner, Alison Hughes.
Reggie’s owner Alison, a partner in a local business, said on the programme: “Reggie had been having some problems with his hind legs for about 2 years. He walked like he was drunk, and when he wasn’t walking, he just sank down.
97% of French Bulldogs have a spinal malformation, but luckily for most, these malformations are benign and don’t greatly affect them. But unfortunately for Reggie, his condition is likely related to these malformations.
Reggie's spinal complications was diagnosed as a neurological condition in which fluid accumulates within the spinal cord due to scarring of the membranes surrounding it. Initially treated with steroid anti-inflammatories, Reggie's condition only marginally improved.
However, after three months, his condition declined, leaving surgery as the only viable option. Reggie is seen on the Vet on the Hill episode struggling to walk.
Dr Hamilton added: “Surgery was complex and involved the removal of the roof of Reggie's spinal canal, access to the affected area, and the delicate procedure of freeing up the region of scarring. Reggie's unique case presented additional challenges, including deformed bones at the affected site and a large pocket of fluid within the spinal cord.”
The surgery could have left Reggie paralysed but despite the uncertain outcome, Reggie's owner elected to proceed with the complex surgery. Custom implants were created using a 3D image of Reggie's spine obtained from a CT scan. The surgery was successful, and post-operative CT scans confirmed the perfect placement of the implants.
Reggie returned home the weekend after surgery with a course of intensive exercises to follow.
“Reggie's recovery was swift and heartening,” continued Dr Hamilton. “Within three weeks of surgery, he regained the ability to stand unaided and even took steps with his back legs during physiotherapy sessions.”
Dr Hamilton added “Ten weeks after the surgery, Reggie underwent a recheck with Dr Pete and to everyone's delight, he showed remarkable progress. He was walking with enthusiasm, displaying increased muscle mass in his hind limbs, and was no longer in pain.”
Alison added: “I’m so happy we decided to go for the surgery for Reggie. I’m so surprised by how he’s now walking. He’s fully co-ordinated and he’s got so much strength. He’s gone back to feeling naughty so that means he’s feeling so much better!”
Snowflake the reindeer has been given the gift of sight this Christmas after undergoing a successful eye operation by specialists at the Royal Veterinary College...
Snowflake the reindeer has been given the gift of sight this Christmas after undergoing a successful eye operation by specialists at the Royal Veterinary College.
The nine-year-old reindeer is part of a herd of 22 reindeer based in Rutland. Snowflake is said to be an “absolute darling” and is nearly as famous as Rudolph himself, having appeared on shows such as EastEnders, Made in Chelsea, and The Lorraine Show as well as featuring in television adverts and making guest appearances at weddings.
This winter, Snowflake received treatment from the Ophthalmology Service at the RVC’s Queen Mother Hospital for Animals for a tumour on her left third eyelid. Reindeer, alongside other animals such as dogs, cats, camels and sharks, have a transparent third eyelid called a ‘nictitating membrane’ which helps to keep dust from the eye and can improve vision.
After noticing an abnormal growth on her left third eyelid – and already recovering from skin cancer in her right eye in 2018 – Snowflake’s owner brought her back to the RVC.
The team, led by Dr Maria-Christine Fischer, Lecturer in Ophthalmology, Dr Sara Lawrence-Mills, Senior Clinical Training Fellow in Anaesthesia, and Dr Carolina Palacios Jimenez, Lecturer in Anaesthesia, examined Snowflake. They found that while Snowflake held a good body condition and her sight wasn’t yet affected, there were early signs that the abnormal growth could lead to the same common form of skin cancer again.
The team decided to perform surgery to remove the third eyelid under sedation. To prepare, they applied local anaesthetic and eye drops and after surgery, they used cryotherapy on the wound edge to promote healing.
Throughout the whole procedure, Snowflake’s daughter was with her so they both remained calm, helping to support the surgery.
The third eyelid was then submitted for examination, which confirmed the presence of skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) which the team at the RVC was able to remove completely.
Snowflake has now made a full recovery and has enjoyed being reunited with her herd in time for Christmas.
Dr Maria-Christine Fischer, Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the RVC, said:
“Snowflake had a cancerous mass on her third eye lid. Surgical removal of the third eyelid in a Reindeer has not been reported before. We were pleased that we could perform the surgery with Snowflake under a standing sedation and with using local anaesthetics. As an ophthalmologist, I am committed to preserving vision so it’s rewarding that we were able to completely excise the tumour and did not have to remove the eyeball. It’s a very good outcome.
“I’m also pleased that Snowflake recovered quickly from the procedure, and we were able to share the protocol of the sedation and the local nerve blocks with other vets via a scientific publication. Sharing our knowledge will hopefully be beneficial for future ophthalmic surgeries in reindeer.”
Nick Dean, Snowflake’s owner, said:
“Eyesight is essential for reindeer as they have ultra violet vision which allows them to find lichens (reindeer moss) under the snow and dig it out with their front feet to eat. Interestingly, when reindeer walk you will also hear a clicking sound which are the tendons in their feet and means the herd can stay together in low visibility.
“So, when we were concerned about Snowflake’s vision, we took her straight to the RVC. Our experience with the institution has been fantastic. Dr Alex McSloy has been a great help over the years with her knowledge of reindeer which has been passed on to other veterinary trainees. Dr Marie Fischer is a brilliant ophthalmological surgeon who did a great job removing the initial tumour on Snowflake’s eye and subsequently her second eyelid.”

Bookings for PATS 2024, which takes place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October 2024, are gathering pace as the pet industry looks forward to the new three-day format.
Some of the UK’s major pet companies and brands have already secured their stand space, including Ancol Pet Products, Cranswick Pet Products (Alpha & Vitalin), Danish Design, Eden Pet Foods, Fold Hill Foods, Forthglade, IPN, Kennelpak, Natures Menu and Nature’s Variety, Nova Dog Chews, Paleo Ridge, Pedigree Wholesale, Rogz, Trixie, We.pet, and Westland (Bucktons and Peckish), among others.
“The response to PATS 2024 becoming an all-encompassing three-day exhibition has been fantastic,” said organiser Gordon Thomas. “With still over eight months to go before the show, major companies are already booking their spaces, with many of them taking larger stands.
“We have the capacity to accommodate more than 300 exhibitors, making it the biggest-ever PATS we’ve staged.”
Danish Design was one of the first companies to book its stand at PATS 2024, and director of operations and sales Rob Newsome said: “We think the extra day will be a great addition as it will allow us to spend more time with buyers. Some of our customers have previously told us they have run out of time at the show and haven’t managed to see everyone, so having three days will really help in this respect.”
Ancol Pet Products was another company to book a stand early, and director Simon Lane said: “We are very pleased that we’ll get an extra day to exhibit – in our opinion extra show time is a huge benefit to everyone.”
It’s a similar story for Cranswick Pet Products with head of marketing Jerry Lowe stating the exhibition is the perfect place to showcase its popular brands Vitalin and Alpha brands. “Having an extra day next year is exciting and creates an opportunity to see everyone for longer.”
After a very successful PATS in September, Rogz was quick to book for 2024. Sallie-Ann Reed, managing director for UK and Ireland, commented: “I’m 100% behind the move to a three-day show.”
Swedish company Voff sees PATS as an “excellent” opportunity for its brands Nova Dog Chews, Nutriment and Aniforte to showcase products and services to existing and new customers. UK managing directors Antoon Murphy and Lloyd Murdoch said: “This is a great opportunity for all businesses and attendees. We are looking forward to the extended event, providing more time to meet with existing and new customers, and to strengthen lasting relationships in the industry. As the event is bigger and better we hope to see as many of our customers there as possible.”
Retailers and buyers can register theirinterest in visiting PATS 2024 by going to the exhibition websitewww.patshow.co.uk, which has all the up-to-date information about the show.
Alison Pettitt, who jointly owns four Pettitt & Boo stores in Norfolk with husband Adrian, has already logged the dates of PATS 2024 in her New Year diary. “We certainly don’t want to miss it,” she said. “It’s fantastic to see the growth of PATS. The additional day provides a greater window to really get into more productive and beneficial conversations with exhibitors, rather than having to rush. The extra day is very welcome so we can get the most out of this excellent event.”

The Pet Industry Federation, the UK’s trade association for pet businesses, has announced details of its plans for the New Year, as it looks to build on a successful 2023.
Following its launch in 2023, PIF’s Business of Pets conference is being planned for June 2024, again at Cranfield University, and will bring together pet businesses who are looking to grow and take their business to the next level. Next year’s conference will revolve around the theme of ‘Money, Products and Marketing’ and will provide a comprehensive range of talks on these areas and provide excellent networking opportunities.
In addition, a series of weekly webinars for members is being scheduled, with topics ranging from marketing on Amazon, HR issues around flexible working and the minimum wage, merchandising, trading in the US, canine behaviour and body language and using Instagram. Access to these webinars will be free to members and the initial 2024 line-up of webinars with details of how to register for them will be revealed on the PIF website (www,petfederation.co.uk) early in the new year.
Back by popular demand is the British Dog Groomers’ Association as a division of PIF. A new logo is being re-launched to members who cover dog grooming, to enable them to more specifically highlight this activity to customers. Relevant members will receive a BDGA sticker in 2024.
In addition, an updated version of PIF’s member to member advertising directory, MarketPlace, will be launched on the PIF website to enhance the offering between members and make it easier for commercial relationships to exist between suppliers and other PIF members. This new advertising will showcase members’ products to the trade and pet owners, and have product promotional offers in the PIF members’ area. There will also be a directory of business to business services launching in 2024.
This is all in addition to the PIF Awards, planned for November with the 2024 campaign beginning in May; and new updates and benefits being introduced throughout the year, aimed directly at members.
Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, said: “We are always on the look out for ways to add value to PIF membership, now more than ever. As the only trade association which covers all types of pet business, our strength is in the diverse nature of members and the community which we create. Our aim is to help members get ahead and we hope that our plans for 2024, on top of all the usual membership benefits such as discounts, marketing logos, a listing on our public facing directory and regular e-newsletters with industry news, will do just that.”

A pet shop which has been trading for over 60 years is still the talk of the town with its impressive festive window display.
The Cheshire town of Northwich runs an annual Christmas Window Competition, asking shoppers to vote for their favourite window display.
There was stiff opposition from many retail outlets in the town, and although Firthfield Pet Store didn’t win the competition it still managed to get the locals commenting on the impressive display.

Norwich-based dog accessory specialist Topdog is donating £5 for every harness it sells in December to homeless charity. The company made its pledge following recent negative descriptions of homelessness as a lifestyle choice.
Proceeds from the Topdog harness sales will go to St Martins Housing Trust, a charity focussing on maximising independent living and preventing homelessness in Norwich.
Topdog’s director John Skinner said: “Charitable giving has always been a big part of Topdog, but following recent unfortunate public commentary around homelessness, we felt that it was important to help a charity that recognises the wider support that those experiencing homelessness need and which does such amazing work providing it”.
This initiative will run from the 1st to the 31st of December or until stocks last, offering an opportunity for those with four-legged friends on their Christmas lists to contribute to a meaningful cause.
People sleeping rough need a roof over their heads. They need a warm bed. But they also need a reason to get out of it in the morning. St Martins helps people experiencing homelessness and those at risk by offering them a hand up and nurturing their self-esteem and trust in others. Empower them to make positive choices. To some, they are a lifelong solution. To others, they are a stepping stone to rebuilding their lives. St Martins has supported people in Norwich and Norfolk for over 50 years.
Topdog has a history of supporting charities, having engaged in such efforts since 2019. Specialising in dog harnesses and accessories, the company has a process that sees £1 donated to various charities for every harness sold. These donations are strategically aligned with the design of each harness, supporting different organisations such as The Pink Ribbon Foundation for Breast Cancer and The British Bee Charity.
The popularity of Topdog's harnesses is evident, with harness sales making up nearly one-third (41%) of the brand's total sales from January to November 2023. Each harness boasts an original, hand-drawn design with options for reversibility, adjustability, and nylon straps. The designs prioritise the comfort and adaptability of dogs and owners, ensuring quick drying, durability, and the ability to attach ID tags.
The Topdog team is committed to using their harnesses to continue supporting charities, keen to continue their collaborations and producing more unique styles dedicated to good causes.
