An established family-run pet shop in Norfolk will be closing its doors for the final time on Saturday after more than 30 years of trading.

The owners of Animal Magic in Downham Market have said that rising costs and poor health have prompted the decision to close the store.

Owner Pauline Bigwood and her husband have run the shop for 34 years, firstly in Downham Market High Street before moving to current premises in Bridge Street seven years ago.

Pauline told the Lynn News: “There are several reasons for closing, rising costs being one.

“The town of late has also been very quiet. Both my husband and I have been unwell so now feels like the right time to go.”

News of Animal Magic’s closure prompted many customers to express their sadness on the shop’s Facebook page.

One regular wrote: “Aww, really sad, used to love it when it was where the deli is now. Used to like going to look at the hamsters up the stairs,” while another said: “Sad but a well-deserved retirement.”

Further comments included: “Another standalone business closing, such a shame. Wishing you a long and happy retirement, but also wishing the shop could continue.”
