The UK’s biggest and best pet industry exhibition is just days away

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s No 1 Pet Industry Exhibition, which opens its doors this Sunday and Monday. PATS Telford takes place from 22-23 September, with more exhibitors than ever before and over 200 companies showcasing hundreds of new products.

PATS always attracts large numbers of dedicated buyers from both the UK and overseas, and this year offers even more opportunities for business. All the big players in the industry will be in attendance, as well as many newer or smaller companies hoping to catch the eye with innovative products. There is something for everyone.

Other highlights include the New Product Showcase and the ever-popular expert seminars from leading figures in the pet and grooming industries – a great opportunity to discover some useful trade secrets.

Exhibition organiser Gordon Thomas said: “There has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to ensure that PATS Telford delivers the widest range of exhibitors, new products, seminars from experts and grooming demonstrations…all under one roof.

“Visitor numbers have been growing rapidly over the years and we’re confident the trend will continue. My advice is to arrive early – doors open at 9.30am – because there’s so much to see and do. You can be assured of a very warm welcome.”

Many of the companies taking stand space at Telford for the first time put their decision down to the professional organisation of the event and the outstanding opportunities to engage with retailers.

Helen Hounsell, marketing manager of GWF Nutrition, said: “After visiting PATS Sandown we were impressed by its scale and the potential for trade exposure and were keen to be involved with Telford.

“It’s a well-organised and sizeable show and a great opportunity to meet a wide range of retailers face-to-face to showcase our pet supplements range.”

And Ed Hoare, of Ruff and Tumble, commented: “We have chosen to release our new product at PATS Telford because it’s the perfect location to demonstrate it to both existing customers and potential new stockists.”

One of the major draws of the show is the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews. This year there are a record number of entries, with 259 products to be judged across eight categories. And for the first time there will be two new headlining awards - a Best In Show award and a Green New Product award.

All entries will be judged on the first morning of the show by a panel of expert retailers. Winners will receive their accolades at the PetQuip Gala Awards Dinner on Sunday evening.

PATS has worked closely with PetQuip, an international trade association for petcare goods and services, over the past few years to increase international interest in the exhibition. Increasingly, overseas buyers are seeing the value of the show in making connections and sourcing high quality UK products.

PetQuip will be hosting the Buyers’ Centre on the show floor, arranging one-to-one buyer/supplier meetings during the exhibition, supporting international buyers with their product-sourcing enquiries, organising an escorted retail tour and hosting their attendance at the PetQuip Awards dinner and party.

Amanda Sizer Barrett MBE, Director General of PetQuip, said: “PATS is an essential event in the UK pet industry calendar. It’s an excellent opportunity for suppliers and retailers across the pet industry to meet and network and it is an order-placing show for many.

“We are a loyal supporter of PATS and applaud the organisers for putting on a professional and successful exhibition.”

There’s still time to register for FREE show entry, simply visit www.patshow.co.uk where you will also find supporting information.

Opening times

Sunday, 22nd September, 2019: 9.30am-5.00pm

Two new initiatives have been added to the line-up for the prestigious New Product Awards at PATS Telford 2019.

Selected from the existing entries into the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, will be a Best In Show Award and a Green New Product Award.

The addition of these awards comes at a time of record-breaking entries and reflects the growing importance of product innovation and sustainability within the pet industry. Both will be judged and presented at the PetQuip Awards dinner by Sean Kelly, Head of Pets at Dobbies Garden Centres.

The Best In Show Award will be selected from among eight category winners, while the Green New Product Award will go to the most sustainable product from across the board.

There are 259 entries from 103 exhibitors into the New Product Awards at Telford this year. This is the largest exhibitor entry to date and the biggest-ever number of individual entries. All entries are judged by an independent panel of pet retailers after viewing the products on the first morning of the show.

All awards will be announced and presented at the PetQuip Awards Dinner at the Telford International Centre on the evening of Sunday, September 22.

Sean Kelly said: “I am very much looking forward to judging the Best In Show from the shortlisted eight winners, and feel honoured to be asked to select and present the winner of the Green New Product Award.

“The Green New Product Award is a fantastic idea and I am eager to see how many of the entrants will fit into the sustainability category. The pet industry has a long way to go to catch up with those leading the sustainability drive, but we do have a fantastic mix of products and categories to work across to identify those exciting and innovative solutions.”

The New Product Showcase - just one section of the UK pet industry’s leading event, PATS - is a great opportunity for visiting retailers to see the new products they may wish to stock for the coming season.

It is designed to help visitors locate the latest and most exciting products coming into the pet industry, as they are gathered together in one extensive display and grouped into the following categories:

  • Cat Product (29 entries)
  • Dog Food Product (44 entries)
  • Dog Treat Product (48 entries)
  • Dog Accessories and Toys (41 entries)
  • Dog Harnesses, Leads and Dog Wear (28 entries)
  • Small Animal and Bird Products (23 entries)
  • Pet Care Products (26 entries)
  • Grooming Products (20 entries)

Winning entries will receive a plaque to display on their stands on the final day of the show, as well as support with publicity around the award, which for past winners has proved a launchpad to increased sales.

Downloads of Bestpets app increase 140% in first three months post launch

Downloads of the new Bestpets app have increase 140% since June, as more and more pet businesses benefit from the quick and easy ordering provided by Bestway Wholesale’s specialist pet division’s new ordering platform.

The e-commerce app launched earlier this summer and has contributed to the 41% increase in sales performance for Bestpets versus the same period last year.

The app makes ordering easier for pet customers including pet shops, grooming parlours and online retailers and allows them to:

  • Browse and order the full Bestpets range of over 10,000 pet products, on a mobile phone
  • Use the barcode scanner on the app to scan products and make ordering quicker
  • Make lists of their favourite products and store the lists for easy re-ordering each time.

The app has also been optimised with a third-party search company to improve search functionality, making it easier for customers to find products.

Mike Bailey, Head of Bestpets said: “We’re really pleased with the performance of the Bestpets app, which launched after a culmination of 18 months of research and development. We know that pet businesses want to spend less time ordering and more time focused on selling products and spending time with their customers rather than placing orders.

"That’s why this new app has been designed to enable pet businesses to place their order at the touch of a button on their mobile phones, to save lists based on favourite products for easy re-ordering and to browse our full product range of over 10,000 lines.

“We worked with customers to understand what they do (and don’t) want when it comes to ordering on an app and we wanted to provide a solution which works fast and makes ordering quick and easy.

“All a customer has to do now is download the app and sign in with their existing customer number and they will be ready to order – hundreds of customers are already enjoying the benefits. It’s just what the industry ordered!”

Noel Robinson, who was recently appointed to the role of Director of Bestpets in addition to his role as Director of Bestway Vans Direct, added: “Pet is an area of our business which continues to grow year on year and launching the first app within the Pet Wholesale industry is just one of the ways we are making life easier for our customers.”

As well as easy access to newly launched products and seasonal offers, additional features include the latest barcode scanning technology for ease of search and the ability for customers to manage payments and calculate margins, all in one place.

The app officially launched in June and since then the number of orders placed on the app has steadily increased by 17% month on month. Users have expressed their delight with the speed of the app, the functionality of the barcode scanner and the ability to calculate gross profit on the app itself and this has resulted in a 5% increase on average order value verses customers using the website.

The app can be downloaded on Apple devices at: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/bestpets/id1449149239?mt=8

And Android devices at:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rnfdigital.bestpets

New customers should call the Bestway Wholesale contact centre on 01738 646666 to find out more about Bestpets and the new ordering app.

Dragons’ Den pet-food duo to exhibit at PATS

Two pet food entrepreneurs who stole the hearts of TV viewers when they appeared on Dragons’ Den have chosen to exhibit at PATS Telford...

Two pet food entrepreneurs who stole the hearts of TV viewers when they appeared on Dragons’ Den have chosen to exhibit at PATS Telford .

Husband-and-wife team Jack Walker and Aneisha Soobroyen, who founded the dog and cat food brand Scrumbles a year ago, were invited onto the hit BBC2 show after researchers heard them on Radio Leicester.

The duo were angling for cash from animal-loving Dragon Deborah Meaden. She was very interested in what they had to say, but demanded a 20 per cent cut of the business in return for investing £60,000.

In the end the savvy duo turned the offer down – much to the surprise of viewers and of Aneisha, who thought her husband was going to accept it!

But Jack said: “We are big admirers of Deborah and have no doubt she would add a huge amount of value to the company but the deal wasn’t right for us and our supporters on the day.

“It was edited to look like Aneisha and I didn’t agree, but that was all for TV. It was certainly entertaining!”

The couple could not believe the reaction to the programme and the amount of exposure it brought them, with editorial from The Sun and Daily Mail, radio breakfast shows and more media appearances in the pipeline.

“It’s given us an amazing platform to introduce the brand to millions more customers. What’s been most heart-warming has been the support we’ve seen from our existing customers and the Scrumbles community – we have the best customers!” said Jack.

With such a buzz around the brand, it was a no-brainer to choose PATS - the UK’s No 1 pet industry exhibition – to help capitalise on all the recent publicity.

Jack said: “We attended PATS Telford when we first launched, and visited Sandown, as we always like to keep ahead of the latest trends and innovations in the industry.

“We decided to exhibit at PATS this year as it’s the best way to reach the hundreds of fantastic independent businesses that make up the backbone of the pet industry. As a team of two, we can’t always reach as many customers as we’d wish on the road or on the phone, and PATS brings everybody under one roof. It’s a great place to be!”

Jack and Aneisha both previously had careers outside the pet industry. They chose to launch their new brand following their own experiences of trying to source suitable food for their cat Boo, who suffered a series of tummy upsets.

Aneisha said: “It was about three years ago when Boo had issues. This led us to discover the power of probiotics and the importance of gut health, which sewed the seed for what was to become Scrumbles.

“We’ve both worked within food and consumer goods across sales, marketing and operations. We’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredibly innovative and ethical businesses such as Innocent drinks and Bear Nibbles. Our experience has helped us understand the challenges that may be ahead.”

The duo will be bringing their entire Scrumbles range for dogs and cats to PATS Telford 2019, where they will be launching their new wet food and treats. The range specialises in healthy, gut-friendly treats and probiotic food tailored to breeds and life stage, with everything made in the UK.

Jack said: “We’re really looking forward to attending PATS and doing business there. We understand pet businesses come in all shapes and sizes so this year we have split our offering into two. For groomers, boutiques and smaller pet businesses we’re running an introductory deal on our cat and dog treats, so businesses needn’t worry about large orders and delivery costs. For more established businesses we have a starter deal to give them a great deal on a comprehensive offering of food and treats.”

Sustainability at the core of PATS thanks to new initiatives

Two major initiatives to make the 2019 PATS Telford show the most eco-friendly yet have been announced by the PATS team...

Two major initiatives to make the 2019 PATS Telford show the most eco-friendly yet have been announced by the PATS team.

There is to be a new prize for the most sustainable or ecologically friendly product submitted to the exhibition’s New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews - called the Green New Product Award.

In addition, show organiser Gordon Thomas has pledged to plant 100 trees in conjunction with The Woodland Trust, to ensure the UK’s No 1 Pet Industry Exhibition is doing its bit for the planet.

PATS began its journey towards increased sustainability over two years ago, and these exciting new moves are just the latest in a long line of initiatives.

The Green New Product Award will be judged from all the entries to the New Product Showcase, which every year features the very latest in innovation from the pet industry. Head of Pet at Dobbies Garden Centres, Sean Kelly, will be judging and presenting this prestigious award.

Gordon said: “This new award could be for a product that is sustainable, or uses recyclable packaging, or both. Or perhaps it could actually be a recycled product. It will be very interesting to see how the industry is responding to current ecological concerns.”

The partnership between PATS and The Woodland Trust is to plant 100 new native species trees. The trees will be planted and cared for by the Trust to ensure optimum conditions and maximum impact on the local environment.

Over their lifetime the trees will offset a massive 25 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere.

“We believe that the biggest issue facing us all is our environmental impact on the planet. We all need to look at ways of protecting the environment and reducing our waste,” said Gordon.

“The PATS team is aware that exhibitions can generate huge amounts of waste. Working with its contractors, the venue and with exhibitors, PATS will ensure it is doing as much as possible to reduce any impact on the environment and to limit any waste sent to landfill.”

These two initiatives will complement a number of additional sustainable practices that PATS and its venue the Telford International Centre are putting into place.

Others that will all make a difference to the planet include:

  • The Telford International Centre is working hard to become the UK’s first carbon neutral exhibition centre. It has a host of policies designed to reduce waste and pollution, including ‘switch off’ procedure for all lights and electrical items, ‘Engine Switch off’ policy for coaches within the car parks, dimmer switches in conference rooms and thermostatic controls fitted to radiators.
  • All visitors will receive recyclable paper ‘goodie’ bags instead of plastic.
  • Water dispensers and water points with recyclable paper cones will be available throughout the show. Use of refillable bottles is encouraged.
  • Visitor and exhibitor lanyards and badge holders are made from plastic. To avoid them ending up as landfill PATS is encouraging everyone to place them in the recycling dump bins as they leave, so that they can be re-used at future shows.
  • Tea and coffee for exhibitors will be available in fully recyclable ‘vegware’ cups.
  • The carpet that is laid especially for PATS will be removed to a recycling centre in Coventry so that the polypropylene fibres can be cleaned, shredded and melted back into plastic pellets for re-use as more carpet, or other manufacturing components.
  • The venue now has bins that separate waste categories.
  • The Telford International Centre’s onsite water filtration system allows them to reuse glass bottles, reducing the need for plastic. Their water supplier is Wenlock Springs which is a local Shropshire supplier.
Turning human food waste into pet food goodness

Turning Human Food Wastage into Pet Food Goodness

Two years ago, Purely Fish was first launched.  An international pet food brand with a range of 100% natural, British made pet food products, made from fish.

As a depleting natural resource, Purely Fish was created as a way to use the parts of the fish that are not used for human consumption.  Here in the UK, we take the fillet of the fish, leaving much of the fish left over.  We take these leftover, human grade fish products and use them to create pet food, with the primary aim of reducing food wastage.

Fish by its very nature is packed full of natural goodness and offers a whole host of health benefits whether consumed by humans or animals.  Purely Fish recognised this and now offers a full range of pet food products including treats, complementary wet food, toppers and raw food for both cats and dogs.

The endless benefits of these products include:

-          Packed with naturally occurring Omega 3 oils

-          Hypoallergenic

-          Gluten Free

-          Low in fat (Whitefish products)

-          Good for coat and skin condition

-          Good for joint mobility and dental care

-          Good for digestion and gut health

-          Good for brain and eye development

-

And most importantly, they taste really good and pets love them!

Since its inception in 2017, Purely Fish has grown quickly, both across the UK and Internationally.  Purely Fish products are now sold by more than 60 stockists across the UK in a combination of independent shops, larger retailers, including TK Maxx and Pets Corner.  Purely fish also supply the UK’s leading wholesalers, which in turn is helping the brand to reach thousands of new potential stockists.

Purely Fish also exports to many countries around the world including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Poland and our latest International customer resides in Malta.

Karen Scott, Head of Business Development at Purely Fish comments: “We are delighted that Purely Fish has gained not just home grown recognition in its first two years but also a considerable amount of international growth. The market continues to be highly competitive, but with our experience of exporting with the history of our parent company, Ideal Foods Ltd (voted Exporter of the Year at Cornwall’s Business Awards 2019), this has made our International growth easier to process and allowed us to achieve the success that we have.

“Over the next 12 months, we will continue to grow our international presence supported by new products in development that we plan to launch next year.”

Purely Fish will be exhibiting at PATS Telford.

Karen Scott continues: “PATS Telford enables us to meet up with our existing stockists and Wholesalers under the one roof, whilst offering us the opportunity to introduce our products to new customers both here in the UK and overseas. Please stop by our stand for a chat with either myself or my colleague, Teresa Page.  We very much look forward to seeing you there.”

Danish Design committed to reducing plastic bottle waste

Danish Design has switched to a 100% recycled fibre filling for its pet bedding. "By switching to PET recycled fibre we can ensure that around 8 million plastic bottles a year are stopped from reaching landfill, our natural environment and the oceans," said Rob Newsome, Director of Sales & Operations.

Danish Design has switched to a 100% recycled fibre filling for its pet bedding.

Billions of plastic bottles are thrown away every year with only a small percentage (around 9%) of this being recycled causing huge concern across the world as to the environmental harm.

This huge amount of plastic waste is filling up landfill sites at an alarming rate and bottles can take 450 years to decompose. There are concerns that by mid-century, the oceans could contain more plastic waste than fish!

Danish Design moved to using a 100% recycled PET bottle flake to produce pet bedding fibre fill from this month.

"PET flake is produced by shredding plastic bottles, they are then cleansed and heated to produce a liquid that is forced through a sieve to produce a thread that forms a fibre once coole," said Rob Newsome, Director of Sales & Operations.

"We can process the fibre through our carding machine in the Danish Design factory in Leeds to produce a luxurious super soft thermal filling for our pet bedding.

"By switching to PET recycled fibre we can ensure that around 8 million plastic bottles a year are stopped from reaching landfill, our natural environment and the oceans."

PetQuip trade association manager Pat Flynn said: “Competition for the awards in all eight categories has been fierce, which will make for a very exciting evening."

“Ticket sales for the awards’ dinner started much earlier than usual, as more and more applicants are requesting to be seated with friends or customers from the industry at this entertaining, networking event. As part of the evening’s attraction, the casino tables will be there by popular demand again and the appearance of a table magician will be one of the extra fun elements to be introduced this year.”

George Barclay’s new in-store ordering system set to revolutionise how consumers buy luxury dog beds

Get set for a dog bed revolution thanks to the new merchandising and in-store ordering system from luxury dog bed supplier, George Barclay. This new ‘order in-store, deliver to door’ concept will make it easy for retailers to offer over 300 stunning designs, all within a 1m2 footprint...

Get set for a dog bed revolution thanks to the new merchandising and in-store ordering system from luxury dog bed supplier, George Barclay. This new ‘order in-store, deliver to door’ concept will make it easy for retailers to offer over 300 stunning designs, all within a 1m2 footprint.

Order in-store, deliver direct to the consumer’s door
This new fully integrated retail display unit is perfect for retailers where space is at a premium but the demand for luxury pet products is on the rise. Priced at just £399+VAT the display unit comes complete with an integrated iPad terminal for direct ordering and access to the full George Barclay offering via www.georgebarclay.com.

To provide customers with the ability to touch and feel the quality of the product on offer, each unit also comes fully stocked with six premium dog beds of varying sizes and designs – which can be tailored to your customer demographic – worth RRP £475. A special ‘retailer code’ is allocated to each store/retailer, which when entered at the online checkout via the iPad provides complimentary delivery on orders over £49. All of this can be done at the point of purchase within a matter of minutes – making for one of the easiest ways to purchase dog beds in-store.

Retailers benefit too
What’s more, retailers also benefit from the special commission scheme, where they can earn commission on each order placed via the system. And the benefits for the retailer don’t stop there – the new George Barclay integrated in-store ordering unit means there are no stock commitments, no carriage charges, no restocking, and no soiled stock - freeing up space and staff hours to sell other lines. Instead, retailers can offer their customers access to one of the most luxurious dog bed collections, as well as George Barclay’s accessories lines including the ClimaCOOL dog cooling range, MuttMOP dog drying products, as well as leather leads and collars, leather dog carriers and luxurious throws and blankets.

George Barclay’s Adrian Bartlett said: “Our new integrated in-store ordering system – a true silent salesperson - has been created in response to extensive retailer feedback. Dog beds are notoriously difficult to merchandise, with one overly enthusiastic customer so often causing a complete catastrophe where the display is concerned. Also, with so many different designs, sizes, material and colour ways on offer, the traditional merchandising method requires a huge commitment in terms of space and man hours. But those days are gone – in just 1m2 retailers can offer their customers over 300 different designs, all safely delivered to their door within 2-4 working days. This is the new generation of retailing, and one that competes head to head with the juggernaut that is online.”

Luxury at its best – from George Barclay
George Barclay’s dog beds are created by a dedicated team of dog lovers and are made to last but without compromising on style or design. Each bed is UK designed and made, using only the best fabrics and manufacturing techniques. Enjoying traditional designs, each bed benefits from George Barclay’s unique technology including water resistant inner liners, SofTough™ fabrics, WoofWax™ water repellent coating, and the choice of three mattress and filling options to suit dogs of all shapes and sizes. Replacement covers are also available, with all covers completely machine washable.

Expectations high for Himalayan Cheese treats

Expectations are high for Pawfect Foods’ Himalayan Cheese treats, which are set to launch in various formats – puffs, bars and strips – at PATS Telford...

Expectations are high for Pawfect Foods’ Himalayan Cheese treats, which are set to launch in various formats – puffs, bars and strips – at PATS Telford.

Already the Spring launch of the company’s all encompassing offer, including products like Pawfect Doggy Cuppa, Nature’s Munch and Dr Veneta’s Pawfect Kitchen, has brought rich praise. Now it’s the turn of Himalayan Cheese treats to take the plaudits.

Calicum-rich milk in its raw form is almost impossible for any dog to enjoy, but turn it into a long-lasting and rugged Himalayan cheese stick and you have a high protein chewy treat that will occupy a pet for what seems an eternity whilst providing some welcome dental relief (removing plaque and tartar).

Turn the clock back a century and this was actually a revered long-lasting snack for the Himalayan human community, however today it’s dogs who are the biggest beneficiary of an all-natural chew made at altitude (some 15,000+ feet) by seasoned Churpi makers using milk from hormone-free herds (yaks and cows) raised in pristine, chemical-free pastures.

This is an unrushed treat made the old-fashioned way, free from overt mechanisation and fast-moving conveyor belts, a cheese-themed treat that has permission to lie in the sun for 35 days before being given a sumptuous smoky twang thanks to being smoke dried in some weather-worn sheds.

Historically Himalayan chew sticks were an issue for younger and older dogs with less bite, which is exactly where the new Himalayan Cheese Puffs come in which now means that irrespective of your dog’s breed, age or size there’s a dairy-themed treat to be enjoyed.

Innocent launches British Air-Dried Complete Food

The Innocent Pet Care Company’s new air-dried food offers an innovative addition to the complete dog food market. Forming a new category of food (it isn’t a kibble, wet or frozen), the air-dried food is made in Yorkshire with 70% British lamb or wild salmon.

Founder Chloe Heaton said: “Customers love the quality of our treats and have been asking us to make a complete food for years. Whilst keeping our small company’s big values at the forefront of development, we have worked with leading nutritionists to create a unique and exceptional complete meal.”

The air-dried dog food is made using ethically sourced, quality British ingredients combined with the company’s bespoke, gentle drying expertise.  The result is a semi-moist, great tasting, healthy and nutritious feast.

The handmade production method means with minimum processing and no high temperatures, the nutrients and flavours of the ingredients are maintained.  The food can be stored in an ambient environment, and once opened the pack lasts for up to 4 months making it very convenient.  As it has not been cooked, it is proving to be a popular choice for those tempted by raw feeding but who need a more convenient solution.

Chloe added: “Our food not only offers total convenience as an everyday food, but it is ideal for raw feeders to have on standby for those days when they’ve forgotten to take meat out of the freezer, or they’re going away for a holiday.”

Committed to reducing their environmental impact, the packaging for the food is 100% recyclable.  It is available in 3kg packs and comes in 2 flavours (Lamb Casserole and Wild Salmon Fishcakes), with an RRP of £40.

How PATS has helped Pet Munchies to grow into a successful business

Since launching over 10 years ago, PATS exhibitions have helped hundreds of companies to launch new products, meet new customers and grow their business. Since launching over 10 years ago, PATS exhibitions have helped hundreds of companies to launch new products, meet new customers and grow their business.

Pet Munchies is one company that has grown impressively during this time and founder Suzanne Rothman admits that PATS has played a huge part in her successful business.

And now Suzanne is looking forward to the next chapter in the success story at PATS Telford on 22-23 September.

Here she explains what visitors to the UK’s number one pet industry exhibition can expect.

Will you be launching new products at PATS Telford?

Pet Munchies will be launching our new Wild Salmon Strips at PATS, which are a perfect complement to our premium jerky range of treats. This high quality treat is rich in vitamins and minerals and due to the high levels of Omega 3 helps promote joint mobility and a healthy skin and coat. Single source fish protein will make this product a wonderful new addition to our core range.

What do you hope to achieve at this year’s show?

I’m looking forward to seeing all of our loyal customers and bringing on board new ones and giving all a chance to look at our exciting range of products. We take on board feedback and what is working so well. It is a perfect opportunity to ensure we are getting it right.

Would you say that PATS has helped you to grow as a business?

Definitely. So many retailers have expanded their Pet Munchies range after seeing us at PATS and trying out new varieties. It has helped our company to grow and to give us the confidence to offer over 40 different varieties of treats. Once it works for them they come back to try more.

What do you particularly like about the shows at Sandown and Telford?

It is a perfect network opportunity for us. We are able to see such an amazing variety of customers and showcase our new product development and full range at first hand. The diversity of visitors is fantastic from small to large retailers, vet practices, groomers, garden centres and online retailers, all in a couple of days – it makes this such a great trade show.

Will you be hoping to speak to international buyers?

Each year we have been at PATS we have had the opportunity to speak to international buyers so I am confident this year will be the same.

What makes PATS shows so special?

It has become a must-go-to event for all in the pet trade.

Ground-breaking small animal accessories brand, HayPigs!, releases another World’s first; a highly innovative, 3-in-1, treat ball. This new product brings interaction, stimulation and play to a new level with its inventive multifunctionality and striking aesthetic.

Designed for guinea pigs and other small furries, the HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball consists of two uniquely designed hemispheres that can be joined together or used independently. As a complete ball, users can fill it with finally chopped vegetables and fruit (or portion-controlled pellet food) and let their small furries discover how to get at the treats. This usually involves them rolling the ball about with their noses until the treats drop out. This kind of food challenge is a great way of keeping your pets active and stimulated, and can actually reduce their stress levels while keeping them happy and healthy.

Split the ball in half and the two hemispheres can be used to hide treats underneath for small furries to find with their noses. This scent led game encourages foraging (a natural behaviour from their ancestors’ time in the wild), wonderful for the mental stimulation and enrichment of your pets.

The third feature of HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball is it’s arrangement of star-shaped holes on one side of the ball. These stars fulfil two purposes; to release treats when the ball is whole, and to allow users to wedge an array of vegetables and herbs into them to create an additional feeding challenge. This is another completely unique feature of HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball and is ideal for encouraging small furries to interact with one another. With 6 holes, the ball can be packed out, so there are plenty of treats for everyone.

The HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball - 3-in-1 Enrichment Toy retails at £9.99 and is part of the HayPigs! Guinea Pig Circus range. It is suitable for guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters and other small animals.

The HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball has been shortlisted as a finalist for Pet Product of the Year in the Small Animals category at this years’ PetQuip Awards. It has also amassed some impressive pre-orders after its soft launch via social media a week ago.

The HayPigs! Circus Treat Ball will be showcased at PATS Telford in September.

The Dog Treat Company introduces Snibbles to UK

It was the breakout success of The Dog Treat Company’s 1st vegan-friendly/gluten-free treat in 2018, (coconut, chia and turmeric) at targeting the growing number of UK dogs suffering from delicate tummies & meat/protein-based allergies, that was indirectly responsible for the launch of the Devon business’s 3-strong vegetarian Snibbles range into North America late last month, a range which trumpets its imminent arrival to the UK via PATS Telfor...

It was the breakout success of The Dog Treat Company’s 1st vegan-friendly/gluten-free treat in 2018, (coconut, chia and turmeric) at targeting the growing number of UK dogs suffering from delicate tummies & meat/protein-based allergies, that was indirectly responsible for the launch of the Devon business’s 3-strong vegetarian Snibbles range into North America late last month, a range which trumpets its imminent arrival to the UK via PATS Telford.

Snibbles come in 3 deliciously distinct, ‘eat your veggies’ flavours (made with human-grade ingredients)

  • Coconut, Apple, Devon Honey & Kale
  • Coconut, Cranberries, Cheese & Parsnip
  • Coconut, Carrot, Parsnip & Turmeric

Snibbles addresses the long-standing conundrum regarding when is a snack so much more than a light nibble? The answer is actually simpler than you might first imagine; namely when a treat can demonstrate an unwavering commitment to all-natural, human-grade ingredients packed with bonafide nutritional worth.

According to Dog Treat Company founder, Joe Halliwell, ‘Over the years we’ve noticed a growing crossover between human and pet food values (pet humanisation), as K9 treats move away from convenience, gimmicks, unnecessary fillers, excessive salt and sugar……towards full-bodied flavours, meaningful nutrition, the odd beneficial functional food (e.g. turmeric) and ever greater choice.

Interestingly enough, The Dog Treat Company’s treats are baked in a DEFRA approved bakery on the edge of Dartmoor National Park using state-of-the-art human biscotti manufacturing equipment.

Such is the draw of human food values that The Dog Treat Company insisted that Snibbles met more ambitious, everyday price points & bigger family pack formats, that the packaging was  made from fully recyclable materials and with ‘look before you buy’ windows, because a truly transparent/beneficial bite needn’t just be an occasional dalliance!

The Dog Treat Company actually began its life as a luxury home delivery service for pampered pooches, a classy Graze/Hotel Chocolat style idea offering much loved pets ‘happy letterbox moments.’

Word spread and The Dog Treat Company’s reach quickly extended to traditional dog food forums (Fetch, Pets Corner) forward-thinking food halls (Fortnums) and a growing number of increasingly in vogue dog-friendly cafes, pubs even family + dog friendly holiday destinations (Forest Holidays) supplied by the likes of Cotswold Fayre.

The Dog Treat Company also enjoys a flourishing export network that extends far beyond north America to other avant-garde pet foods epicentres including Hong Kong, China, Scandinavia, Holland, Italy and South Korea.

Joe concludes by saying, ‘No-one is suggesting for a moment that dogs are anything other than  meat-loving omnivores, however a one-dimensional meat –themed diet can have unwelcome implications for even the most perfectly proportioned hound (acidity in gut, weight gain poor joints, reduced immunity to illness…)because with 1 in 4 UK dogs still deemed clinically obese, a better balance between great taste and good nutrition needs to be struck.’

Dogs for Good PATS puppy comes to show

PATS Telford is expecting a very special visitor this week – Winter, the Dogs for Good puppy it sponsored a year ago.

PATS Telford is expecting a very special visitor this week – Winter, the Dogs for Good puppy it sponsored a year ago.

The Labrador x Golden Retriever has obviously grown a bit now, having spent her first year of life with socialiser Katy.

Thanks to sponsorship from PATS, Winter has been fully supported in her development, including provision of a starter kit for all her canine needs - crate, bed, food, water bowls, toys, identification working jacket, lead flash, collar and lead.

Dogs for Good, which trains assistance dogs for adults and children with physical disabilities, became PATS’ chosen charity last year and were given great receptions at both the Sandown and Telford shows.

As well as collecting donations from visitors and exhibitors during the exhibitions, the charity received items from the New Product Showcase to use as competition prizes at their many events.

PATS organiser Gordon Thomas said: “Dogs for Good are a wonderful charity, helping to change many people’s lives through their outstanding work. We are proud to have them as our chosen charity and look forward to supporting their valued work in the future.”

Next year, Winter will be heading for the charity’s training centre in Banbury. By all accounts she is already showing all the characteristics required of a fully trained dog, confidence, as well as an interest in people and in playing.

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.

Poppy’s Picnic to launch new COMPLETE meals and trade deals at PATS

Poppy’s Picnic will be announcing enticing trade deals and new additions to the Poppy’s Picnic COMPLETE range at PATS Telford (Stand H11)...

Poppy’s Picnic will be announcing enticing trade deals and new additions to the Poppy’s Picnic COMPLETE range at PATS Telford (Stand H11).

The company is seeking to expand its cohort of quality independent stockists throughout the UK and is encouraging interested parties to arrange a time to discuss trade options.

Dylan Watkins launched Poppy’s Picnic in 2016 to make it easy for people to feed their dogs a raw food diet, the way nature intended. The company’s tasty wholesome recipes have been lovingly crafted with the help of canine nutritionists and fourth generation butchers who supply the fresh meat from their own abattoir, which means 100% traceability and makes the supply chain minimal. With no hidden nasties, the balanced meals contain all the goodness a dog needs for optimal health and wellbeing.

Poppy’s Picnic dog food has the highest rated meals in the UK by All About Dog Food with a 95% rating. The company has also achieved over 1000 glowing reviews on Google, Facebook and Reviews.io. Just recently the brand beat thousands of start-ups to reach number seven nationally in NatWest’s Power Up Index. The company prides itself on its customer service and the VIP (Very Important Paws) Team has been nominated for the ‘Team of the Year Award’ for Wales and South West region at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2019.

Commenting on the company’s growth Dylan said, “Since exhibiting at PATS last year we’ve significantly grown our fantastic range of stockists. We’ve enjoyed working closely with them and supporting them with a brand new range of POS materials and via our campaigns including our Stockists in the Spotlight series. We’re passionate about getting the brand out there and changing dogs’ lives. This year alone we’ve fed dog food on Come Dine With Me, showcased our food live on This Morning with Eamonn and Ruth, and just recently spoke to over 13 radio stations with canine nutritionist Anna Webb following the launch of our RAWgust campaign.”

Herbal experts Dorwest Herbs has yet again the perfect solution for keeping pets calm this firework season with their ‘Licensed to Chill’ campaign, which will be launched to the trade at PATS Telford.

Licensed medicine Scullcap & Valerian Tablets and herbal supplement Valerian Compound are the ideal way to calm and relax dogs and cats naturally, so owners won’t have to worry about them being shaken or stirred, they’ll just be perfectly chilled!

Herbs are gentle yet effective and reduce anxiety by lessening activity in the nervous system rather than relaxing muscles, so pets can be relaxed and calm without it sedating or affecting their normal behaviour, resulting in a calm firework period for owners and pets alike. For trade stockists they have a special offer ‘Calming Product Pack’ containing the most popular sizes of Scullcap & Valerian Tablets and Valerian Compound in a handy counter size display box. A free support kit is available, plus digital assets for your social pages.

They’ve gone balmy! Continuing to produce exceptional natural products to keep dogs and cats in perfect health, they have now extended their topical offering by launching two NEW beautiful balms.

Jo Boughton-White, MD, commented: “We often get asked for products for pets cracked paws & noses, and something soothing to put on sore skin. So, we’ve listened to our customers and produced a Paw & Nose Balm and reformulated our Skin Balm (previously called Comfrey & Calendula Skin Balm). We especially enjoyed trying out the recipes on ourselves and our dogs in the office, so they are definitely tried and tested!”

UK grown herbs are gently steeped in beneficial sunflower and jojoba oils in small batches and combined with beeswax and nourishing shea butter to produce these very high-quality balms. The Paw & Nose Balm features softening Calendula, calming Chickweed and protective Marshmallow. The reformulated Skin Balm contains moisturising Comfrey, softening Calendula and calming Chamomile, along with oils of lavender, rose geranium and mandarin.

These pots of natural shea goodness are lick-safe and will soothe and nurture problem areas and are perfect for sensitive skin, and the approaching winter season. Available in handy 50ml tins with an RRP of £9.95 each.

The Calming Product Pack which can normally be purchased for the very special offer price of £65 + vat, and which retails for £141.50 (inc vat), is further discounted at PATS as all orders placed at the show will receive an extra 5% off!  To order yours and find out more about their new beautiful balms pop along to Stand A40.

Frozzys launches new website to reflect rebranding

Frozzys has launched its new website, which is the final part of its exciting reposition and rebrand. This activity and investment comes in response to feedback from a recent consumer research project carried out by the company.

Frozzys was established in 2013 when founder and director Noel Conlon struggled to find a healthy and nutritious, low calorie and long-lasting treat for his beloved dog Juno to enjoy.

Wanting to create a product which had many nutritional and practical benefits, Noel partnered with fellow director, Michael Hunt, and has since developed a portfolio of inspiring frozen yogurt products. The current portfolio consists of five great-tasting flavours: original, strawberry, blueberry, cranberry and peach.

Canine nutrition has always been of paramount importance to the brand, who formulate their frozen yogurt recipes with the support of Senior Food Technologists at CAFRE (College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise). In order to effectively demonstrate the impressive nutritious profile of the products, the Frozzys team invested in an independent consumer research project to learn what features and benefits were priorities to consumers.

“The project produced some really interesting feedback on what matters to consumers and how they view the pet food industry,” comments Jackie Kirk, Marketing Manager at Frozzys.

“This included how extremely important calcium and calorie information on a pack was, how healthy and natural ingredients were of huge consideration and specific key drivers which make consumers purchase a treat.

"Based on this feedback, we’ve repositioned our branding, packaging and website to reflect and reinforce features and benefits of Frozzys which consumers agreed were important.”

It’s not just the branding and packaging that has been subject to a reposition: the Frozzys website has been redesigned and launched today. The new website has lots of new exciting features, whilst reinforcing and emphasising the key features of Frozzys which appeal highly to consumers. Specific features are: free of lactose, Rich in vitamins and minerals, low in calories, fat and sugar, rich in calcium, slow-to-consume/mentally stimulating, beneficial as a cooling aid and much more. The website also additionally features a new blog and meet the team section.

“Our new website gives more of an insight into who we are here at Frozzys and why we care so much about how nutritious and delicious Frozzys treats are. You’ll now get to meet our team (humans and dogs), read articles and insights from our experts and discover more about our commitment to quality,” Jackie adds.

It’s been a busy six months for Frozzys, having launched a new flavour to their portfolio earlier this year, whilst also revealing plans to extend into Europe. With an ongoing movement towards healthy treats for ever-conscious pet owners to give their dogs, it’s unsurprising that a treat like Frozzys, which ticks all the boxes in terms of nutrition and health, is receiving such attention in the marketplace.

Beaphar extends Pheromone Calming range

The new Beaphar CaniComfort Calming range contains a synthetic copy of the Dog Appeasing Pheromone. The Dog Appeasing Pheromone is naturally produced by the bitch during nursing to help calm her puppies, and is clinically proven to promote feelings of reassurance in dogs of all ages and breeds.

The range has been launched in time for bonfire night. According to the RSPCA, around 45% of dogs show signs of fear when they hear fireworks, making the products the perfect item to stock in the lead up to November 5th, Christmas and New Year.

Dr Sue Huggett, UK Business Manager, said: “Following the successful launch of Beaphar CatComfort last year, we were keen to give our retailers a pheromone calming solution for dogs as well.

“The introduction of Beaphar CaniComfort means that pet retailers can provide cat and dog owners with a simple and effective solution to support their pets during stressful situations, such as the firework and New Year period, as well as throughout the year.”

To support the products in-store and encourage customers to buy, Beaphar has created a complete marketing support package, including two dual-purpose CDUs.

“While the use of effective calming products are essential over the firework and festive party season, they can also be used to support our pets through other stressful situations, such as travelling, moving house or thunderstorms,” explains Vicky Le Fanu, UK Marketing Manager.

“We’ve created two CDUs, one for each product range, which both have reversible headboards depicting fireworks on one side and general information on the other. This means we can help support our retailers sales of our pheromone calming products all year round.”

Other point of sale items this year include an eye-catching, firework themed window sticker, guaranteed to draw customers in, ‘A complete guide to Beaphar CaniComfort’ consumer leaflet, posters and shelf barkers. A full range of digital assets are also available to download from the Beaphar Trade Zone.

But it is not only through point of sale Beaphar are supporting retailers, new for 2019 are two training modules on Feline Stress and Communication, and Canine Calming, which combined are worth 9 AMTRA CPD points. They can be accessed for free via Beaphar’s online Training Zone – beaphar-training.co.uk.

“Our training is something we’re particularly proud of,” says Dr Sue Hugget. “The introduction of these two modules means that Beaphar stockist not only have greater knowledge of Beaphar CatComfort and Beaphar CaniComfort®, but also a greater understanding of how stress in cats and dogs occurs. This will allow them to help their customers more effectively, and ensure that product knowledge and advice is passed on. This in turn helps pet owners to thoroughly understand their pets’ needs.”

The Barking Bakery experienced a surge of interest in its business after owner Michelle Turnbull appeared on BBC TV hit show Dragons’ Den.

Although Michelle was turned by the five Dragons, she believes her company has benefitted from the TV exposure.

Michelle asked for an investment of £75,000 for a 15% stake in the business but none of the Dragons made an offer.

“I have no regrets of appearing on the programme although it was a challenging experience,” said Michelle.

“And since the programme was aired recently, interest in my company and products has soared. The day after the show my website crashed because of the amount of people visiting it. Plus I’ve lots of offers from investors although I haven’t accepted any of them.

“Yes, I would do it again, purely from the amount of exposure it gives you.”

New dog-resistant grass seed formula launched by Johnsons Lawn Seed

A new grass seed mix that has been scientifically proven to resist damage caused by dog urine is being exclusively introduced by Johnsons Lawn Seed...

A new grass seed mix that has been scientifically proven to resist damage caused by dog urine is being exclusively introduced by Johnsons Lawn Seed.

Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance is a unique new product that has been formulated to banish the problem of yellow patches and dead areas of grasscaused by dogs urinating on lawns. By incorporating naturally tolerant grass species, scorched patches in lawns will be consigned to history, without consumers having to change their dog’s diet or behaviour. Even if slight discolouration occasionally occurs, grass will recover.

World-leading grass seed specialist DLF Seeds, the parent company of Johnsons Lawn Seed, carried out 672 tests to simulate the effect of dog urine on individual types of grass. It tested 168 varieties of grass across seven species – trialing each variety with dog urine mixtures in four concentrations. Results showed that certain grasses offer better resistance to dog urine than others, while some did not suffer any detrimental effects.

Johnsons Lawn Seed’s Guy Jenkins said: “When dogs use a lawn as their toilet, acid in canine urine causes burns on the grass, a problem that in the past has forced consumers to undertake time-consuming lawn repairs. By introducing dog patch resistant grass seed, gardeners will benefit from lawns that are robust enough to cope with the stress caused by even concentrated dog urine, without discolouration or patches.

“The development of dog patch resistant grass seed was based on rock solid data from trials, with the product rigorously tested by scientists at DLF Seeds in Denmark. Following extensive research and development, we are bringing to market a unique product that has proven its ability to create dog-resistant lawnsthat are tough enough to stand up to the wear and tear of family use. As an added bonus, it has an excellent resistance to low temperatures and snow, with improved drought-resistance,” Guy added.

Establishing a new lawn using Tuffgrass with Dog Patch Resistance is a one-off job and requires no more effort than sowing any other type of lawn from seed. For consumers who are unable to renew their entire lawn, existing turf can be overseeded with dog patch resistant grass seed in autumn or spring.

Overseeding will gradually introduce patch resistant grass into established lawns, which will steadily gain the benefits of dog urine resistance over time.  For consumers who have only a small amount of dog urine damage in their lawn, dog patch resistant grass seed can be used to repair affected areas.

In line with consumer trends for products that are kind to the environment, Johnsons’ dog patch resistant mixtures are natural and safe for family use. The product contains 100% grass seed and nothing else.

Dogrobes helps to support the thriving Scottish Textile industry by creating jobs at Haven PTS

Award-winning Fochabers-based pet accessory company, Dogrobes is helping to support two permanent jobs at Haven PTS in Larbert near Falkirk in Scotland by using the company to manufacture its popular dog drying coats...

Award-winning Fochabers-based pet accessory company, Dogrobes is helping to support two permanent jobs at Haven PTS in Larbert near Falkirk in Scotland by using the company to manufacture its popular dog drying coats.

Haven is part of Momentum and the wider Rehab Group, a leading not-for-profit organisation providing rehabilitation, training and care services for disabled and socially excluded people throughout the UK. Haven operates from a number of key sites across Scotland, delivering services to a client list ranging from international blue chip firms to local businesses.

Haven PTS is part of a thriving textile industry in Scotland. According to Scottish Development International, Scotland exports textiles to 150 countries worldwide. It is expected that by 2020 the value of Scottish textiles will reach £500 m and this will be supported by a £3.5 million research budget for the industry. Brands such as Chanel source textiles from Scotland which include knitwear (cashmere and lambswool), woven fabrics including tartan and tweed, leather for high end use, lace and technical and industrial textiles.

Known already for designing and manufacturing high quality and competitively-priced Personal Protection Equipment, marine safety clothing, workwear and uniforms, Haven PTS was chosen by Dogrobes as it was able to manufacture their range to their company’s own exacting standards.

Margaret Reynolds owner of Dogrobes says,

“Haven PTS met all our requirements. They manufacture to a high quality standard, have a skilled workforce in the textile industry and they are able to produce the quantity that we require. We are very proud that Dogrobes carry the Made in Britain standard and although it costs us more to manufacture in the UK, we are delighted that we are able to keep the manufacturing process in this country and support a business that provides meaningful jobs, on-going training and development opportunities for people with disabilities and those marginalised in society. The Made in Britain standard gives prestige to our product range.”

Dogrobes provide the perfect answer for drying wet muddy dogs and protecting surrounding from shake off. Dogrobes dry dogs quickly in around 30 minutes, keep them warm and comfort them. They are made from an exclusive fabric, which has longer loops on the inside. The longer loops create a greater area for absorbing the moisture from the dog’s coat. Plus it traps the dog’s body heat, which also helps to dry the dog. There is NO Velcro, which spooks some dogs and gets clogged up with dog hair and debris during everyday use and it’s a nightmare to launder too! The ties mean a perfect fit every time. Dogrobes are so easy to fit. Straight over the dog’s head, cross over the ties underneath and tie in a single loop to the side of the spine. Dogs love them because they are so lightweight – even dogs who don’t like wearing jackets.

Dogrobes also use a team of talented and up and coming designers to design their Exclusive Collection and offer a range of complementary dog accessories to go with the Dogrobes including snoods to dry the dog’s head, neck and ears. They have also just recently introduced their new gauntlets which are worn on the hands and help to dry the dog’s legs and paws.
