New pet store in Surrey proves to be an instant hit

DoLittle Pet Supplies has just opened its third pet store in Surrey and already it is proving to be a big hit with local pet owners.

Managing director Gareth Thomas revealed to Pet Trade Xtra why the company's latest venture has been an instant success.

When did the new store open?
Our third shop opened on April 1 - yes April Fools Day. It is a historic thing that we have always done when opening or moving to new locations, always on April Fools Day  – it just seems to work for marketing and getting us noticed.

Where is the new store located?
The full address of the shop is 143 Cobham Road, Fetcham, Surrey.

Why did you open a pet store there?
Fetcham/Bookham was a natural progression for us really, having started the business six years ago just a mile up the road in a local garden centre. Many of our first customers all those years ago still buy regularly from us, using our free home delivery service or automated delivery system. These customers have encouraged us to open a store in the village. It’s also our community! All the staff associated and running the shop live within the locality. Our manager can walk to work. We are locals running a local business to the benefit of the local community – all these things are so important to our business ethos.

Where are your other two stores?
Sutton Green between Guildford and Woking is head office and distribution centre, occupying 5,000 sq ft. Our second store Ashtead is little more than two miles up the road in the next village. We are firmly based in Surrey.

What's on offer at your new store?
Fetcham is a reflection of Sutton Green and Ashtead with the best of both combined into one store. Whilst offering all the regular brands of pets foods and accessories we also have three leading brands of frozen raw food for dogs and cats – Natural Instinct, Nutriment and Benyfit Natural – and offer others in lesser quantities. We have invested over £4,500 in the new upright freezers alone in this store. We are also offering the best in Grain Free diets from Canagan, Eden and our own branded Grain Free in six different flavours.

What other services do you offer?
DoLittle Dog Grooming is also represented in a new grooming salon set up in the rear third of the store. Over the next couple of weeks the new hydraulic bath and grooming tables will be installed so professional grooming can commence mid-May. Fetcham will also be promoting our free home delivery service across Surrey. Typically we try and deliver the next working day across the county, including all the frozen foods with a minimum 6kg order size. This is to prevent thawing. We are often the cheapest delivered including the internet and in a faster time. We pride ourselves on being totally customer focused giving the best service we can.

How many staff do you employ?
There are three full time members of staff. Kieran Mant is our young manager, ably supported by Amy Stewart who grooms and helps run the shop floor when not tripping over Buzz her French Bulldog puppy pictured wearing his company uniform with Kate being our qualified head groomer. Other members of staff will be in store from time to time covering for staff days off and holidays. There are now a total of 11 full time staff within the business.

Which is your biggest store?
Sutton Green is the largest store being head office (5,000 sq ft) – our satellite stores are between 750 and 1200 sq ft.

Did you have any outside help in setting up the new store?
Hertford Shelving were very helpful in supporting our design ideas and bringing them to fruition, doing the total shop fit.

Flooded pet store in Tring finally reopens

A pet store in Tring, Hertfordshire, that suffered nearly £40,000 worth of damage due to a flood is back open for business...

A pet store in Tring, Hertfordshire, that suffered nearly £40,000 worth of damage due to a flood is back open for business.

Gosford Pets, based in Tring High Street, had been closed since early February after a burst water pipe from a flat above the shop caused widespread damage.

Owner Lauren Saunders held an open day to welcome shoppers back to the store, which sells pet accessories and a small number of animals.

The shop, which was only purchased by Lauren back in November, has had a big refurbishment by builders over the last month so that it could quickly open again.

Lauren said: “It’s a really big relief to be opening again.

“It was absolutely amazing to welcome customers back, and the feedback we’ve had about the new look has been really good. A few of them were saying the flood had done us a favour.

“We’ve had a lot of support from the people in Tring and they’ve sent us some nice messages. Everyone has been really lovely to us.”

Hertford Shelving played a big role in fitting out the new-look store and Steve Lodge said: “I would like to thank Lauren and Chloe of Gosford Pets and Grooming for awarding them the refurbishment works after their pet shop was forced to close due to a flood from the premises above and we wish them all the best for the future."

The shop raised more than £200 for the Chilterns Dog Rescue and Rennie Grove Hospice Care charities at the open day.

Harringtons to sponsor new series of the Yorkshire Vet
Leading dog food brand Harringtons is set to sponsor the fourth series of Channel 5’s hit documentary 'The Yorkshire Vet', which starts on April 19...
Leading dog food brand Harringtons is set to sponsor the fourth series of Channel 5’s hit documentary 'The Yorkshire Vet', which starts on April 19.

This is the first time that brand owner Inspired Pet Nutrition (IPN) has taken up TV sponsorship for either its Harringtons or Wagg brands.

The tie-up is a natural fit as Peter Wright – one of the vets who star in the series – regularly visits the brand’s factory at Dalton in North Yorkshire to approve pet products going for export.

“Given our link with Peter, the opportunity to sponsor the programme seemed a perfect extension to our on-going ATL activity,” said Tom Page, Sales & Marketing Director at IPN.

“We are a long-established, family-owned business supplying products for dogs, cats and other small animals and our site is only a few miles from the practice’s Skeldale Surgery in Thirsk.

"Skeldale also has a rich tradition in animal care stretching back to Alf White – better known to millions as vet and author James Herriot.

“The series regularly attracts some 1.5 million viewers and is a great way for us to communicate the natural benefits of the Harringtons range and raise awareness even further.”

Harringtons is currently the runaway success story in the branded sector of the UK’s dry dog food market.  In the 26 weeks to 25/2/2017 sales showed the fastest rate of growth of any brand – up some 40% in both volume and value terms1.   The brand has also been a consistent performer over the past year and now generates total sales of nearly £25 million.

Again, it clearly outperformed its competitors over this period with sales growth of some 35% in both volume and value terms2.  Sales data has also shown that, over the past year, the first ten places in the volume table of top selling dry dog Skus (Stock Keeping Units) were all occupied by either Harringtons or its sister brand Wagg3.

In addition to the sponsorship, a new burst of marketing activity is underway to further support the Harringtons brand including advertising on TV and radio and through digital channels. The brand’s packaging has also been re-designed to further highlight its natural qualities.

Pets at risk from chocolate poisoning this Easter

Research from the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report has found that 188,000 dogs in the UK are regularly fed chocolate despite the threat of its fatal consequences...

Thousands of pets are at risk of fatal chocolate poisoning this Easter.

Everybody’s favourite sweet treat contains a substance that is toxic to our pets, yet research from the PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report found 188,000 dogs are regularly fed chocolate.

Accidental poisonings can also occur at this time of year, with more chocolate in the home around Easter.

Hamish’s story

West Highland terrier Hamish, from Somerset, needed emergency veterinary treatment after wolfing down 12 bars of chocolate. His distraught owner, Samantha Boole, had left them in a bedroom and thought they were out of Hamish’s reach, but the hungry hound had gone upstairs and tucked in.

Samantha said: “As soon as I saw the empty wrappers, I knew Hamish had eaten the chocolate. I know chocolate is poisonous, so I phoned the vet and they told me to bring him in straight away.”

Samantha’s quick thinking meant Hamish received prompt treatment, but he still had to go through the ordeal of treatment that included giving him treatments to make him sick and prevent any further absorption of the toxins.

The accident would have cost Samantha £300 in vet fees had she not been insured with PDSA Pet Insurance.

Samantha adds: “I was so worried about Hamish, he means the world to me, but I knew he was in good hands. When your pet is ill, your focus should be on them, not worrying how you will afford the treatment they need.”

Tina Sleigh, PDSA Pet Insurance Manager, said: “The Easter holidays bring families together and we also need to remember to look after our pets too by keeping chocolate out of reach.

“Sadly, many pets will need treatment for chocolate poisoning in the days ahead, putting their lives at risk and costing their owners hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds in veterinary treatment.

“Pet Insurance can take away the worry of paying for emergency vet care when your pet is ill or injured.”

Signs and Symptoms of chocolate poisoning

Effects usually appear within four hours after eating:
  • Initial signs can include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, a tender tummy and restlessness.
  • These symptoms can then progress to tremors, an abnormal heart rhythm, raised body temperature and rapid breathing.
  • In severe cases pets can experience fits, kidney failure or even death.

If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, you should immediately contact your vet for advice.

Cheers! Roger Mugford tries out Woof & Brew's Pawsecco
Leading animal psychologist Dr Roger Mugford was spotted tasting the new award-winning Pawsecco Wine for Cats and Dogs during a French Bulldog Awareness Day at Scampers Natural Pet Store on Sunday...

See below for details of the Awareness Day at Scampers.

Leading animal psychologist Dr Roger Mugford was spotted tasting the new award-winning Pawsecco Wine for Cats and Dogs during a French Bulldog Awareness Day at Scampers Natural Pet Store on Sunday.

The Pawsecco Wine from Woof & Brew is tipped to be one of this year's bestsellers after winning a New Product Award at PATS Sandown last month.

The judges, a panel of independent pet retailers, said: "This product has a great price point, the ingredients are natural, and it looks like a gift.  It caters for both cats and dogs, and can even be drunk by pet owners."

No wonder Roger Mugford was willing to give it a try.
Award-winning pet store stages successful charity event
Over £1,000 was raised for charity when award-winning Scampers Natural Pet Store in Cambridgeshire held a French Bulldog Awareness Day on Sunday...

An impressive collection of 60 French Bulldogs and Frenchie crosses were in attendance with their owners travelling many miles to be at the event.

Over £1,000 was raised for charity when award-winning Scampers Natural Pet Store in Cambridgeshire held a French Bulldog Awareness Day on Sunday.

An impressive collection of 60 French Bulldogs and Frenchie crosses were in attendance with their owners travelling many miles to be at the event.

“I’ve never known so many people to visit Scampers at one time,” said managing director Piers Smart. “At one point there were 150 vehicles in the car park.

“It was the best day I’ve had at work in 32 years. Everyone has been marvelous, and we’ve raised an amazing amount of money for Phoenix French Bulldog Rescue.”

Piers, who owns a French Bulldog called Rooster and a French cross named Sardine, knows only too well of the problems facing the breed.

“Unfortunately, many people see them as fashion items, and once they get fed up with them the poor dogs end up in rescue centres,” said Piers.

“At Scampers, our role is to raise awareness of the wonderful organisations like Phoenix and to help them build relationships with companies within the trade.

“That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to run the Open Day and it has been a remarkable success.

“I’d like to thank the companies that supported the event and helped us to raise so much money for the charity.”

Teresa Cargill, of Phoenix French Bulldog Rescue, was full of praise for the efforts of Scampers. She said: "Piers and Michelle have always been incredibly supportive of our work, and keen to promote us.

"There are quite a few problems we are facing, many of which stem from unscrupulous breeders. The result is the constant headache of dogs finding themselves in rescue.

"The French Bulldog has become the most popular breed in the country, which is a problem in itself because those unscrupulous breeders will see it as an opportunity to breed more puppies.

"My organisation helps to find foster homes for French Bulldogs in rescue centres, and donations from the Awareness Day at Scampers help tremendously. But probably more important is the fact that these kind of events help to educate the public about the breed."

Pet companies that helped make the day such a success included Woof&Brew, Natures Menu and Gentle Dog Food.

Piers Smart presents a cheque for £500 to Teresa Cargill from the Phoenix French Bullddog Rescue, who also raised another £500 on the day.

Buyers from around the globe meet British pet firms

Innovative products shown by the UK exhibitors at Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, in the group organised by PetQuip, attracted a wide audience from worldwide markets...

A number of the first-time pet product firms returning from the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida, have expressed interest already in exhibiting at the show again next year.

The innovative products shown by the UK exhibitors participating in the group organised by the PetQuip association attracted a wide audience from worldwide markets.

Regular exhibitors, such as Hilton Herbs, also returned to the UK with good results, having received interest from a number of Far Eastern countries and from Finland and Puerto Rico. The company received good news too from a Canadian distributor, secured by the firm at last year’s Global Pet Expo, which is now looking to take on a much wider range of Hilton Herbs’ products.

The Oggi range of biscuits and cake mixes attracted potential interest from distributors in the US and New Zealand and from a leading Canadian retail chain.

Gilbertson and Page was delighted with its first presence at the show and were surprised to have met a number of Far Eastern contacts, while Law Print was very pleased to have met with buyers from US and Canada, Germany and Spain.

Trilanco reported that it had sales leads from Central and South American markets such as Costa Rica and Chile as well as from North America and other international markets.

Max & Lucy’s products were on display for the first time in the US and in addition to meeting with potential North American distributors, the company met with buyers from Asia and from Puerto Rico and Hungary.

Chicken Guard, another first time exhibitor, highlighted large distributors and home and farm retailers among the buyers met at the show.  The company also gained valuable information on the US market for chicken supplies during a retail tour organised as part of the show package.

The PetQuip industry information stand on the pavilion provided a valuable link between the visiting overseas buyers and the UK pet industry and attracted over 60 visitors from over 20 countries. Most were from the US and Canada, with others attending from across Latin America.  European visitors included distributors and retailers from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Finland.  Also in evidence were major distributors from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the Middle East and from the burgeoning online community in China.

The PetQuip association team, together with some of the British exhibiting group, also took part in a guided pet retail tour while in Orlando, which gave the British firms an opportunity to network with important buyers from the 10 countries that participated.

Commenting on the value of the business-creating events organised by PetQuip each year, Charlie Parker of PetQuip said:”Global Pet Expo has once again generated good international sales leads.

"During the show, one Danish distributor confirmed that it is currently working with around 10 UK companies, largely as a result of attending PetQuip ‘Meet the International Buyers’ days, and it also plans to visit the UK exhibitors at Zoomark in May this year and to attend the PATS Telford show in September.

"Several other key buyers also stated that they will be attending the Zoomark show, where PetQuip will be organising the British pavilion which will feature a record number of British exhibitors.”

Companies interested in future business-creating initiatives which are planned by PetQuip should contact either Theresa Swann theresa@petquip.com or Emma Lewis emma@petquip.com.    Telephone +44 (0) 1959 565 995.

Forthglade treats 'unsung hero' dog to a feast

Devon-based Forthglade has treated a seven-year-old Cockerpoo called Niven to three-month's worth of its natural pet food after it was crowned an 'unsung hero'.

Niven was recognised for his hard work and dedication as a Hearing Dog. As well as winning the Forthglae food, the heroic hound also picked up a weekend stay at a luxury pet-friendly hotel.

Niven and his owner Pauline regularly volunteer at the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education, enabling deaf students to work with a hearing dog.

The duo were nominated through a charity called Room to Reward, an initiative that recognises volunteers across the UK.

Niven joined Pauline in 2012 and she said: “He works tirelessly at anything I ask him to do, he is very friendly and patient."

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People set up a project with the Deaf Academy in October 2016, to see if any of the deaf students would benefit from the opportunity to engage with a hearing dog. Niven has been visiting the school every week since, working with the teachers and students.

Niven's dedication even made local news channels as camera crews came out to film the four-legged hero as he arrived at Devon’s Deerpark Country Hotel to receive his medal and Forthglade goodies.

Room to Reward is a charity which launched in July 2015. Over 70 hotels are now supporting the scheme, rewarding deserving charity workers with complimentary hotel breaks across the UK.

Eukanuba donates over 150 bags of food to charity
Eukanuba has donated over 150 bags of dog food to Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue charity as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare...

Eukanuba has donated over 150 bags of dog food to Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue charity as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare.

The charity that prides itself on rescuing, recovering and rehoming unwanted dogs, will benefit from the generous donation of Eukanuba dog food. Eukanuba provides 100% complete and balanced high quality nutrition tailored to fuel a dog through each life stage.

Giuliano Buccino, Head of Marketing for EUKANUBA UK and Ireland comments: “We are delighted to be able to support the Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue charity by feeding their brave rescue dogs.

"With hundreds of dogs in need of good homes and care, it’s so important that charities are given the support they need to flourish.

"The team at Valgray’s work relentlessly to rehome and protect dogs in vulnerable situations and we wanted not only to make a large food donation but also to raise awareness of the work they do and show our support.”

Many of the dogs that come to the rescue centre are in need of care and rehabilitation so by providing them with appropriate high quality nutrition they can build strength to live a long, healthy and happy life.

The impact of Eukanuba along with appropriate care was discovered over a 10 + year observation and the results were unprecedented – nearly 90% of Labrador Retrievers fed Eukanuba, together with appropriate care, lived beyond the breed’s typical twelve years life expectancy, some of them living 30% longer.

Val Phillips, Founder of Valgray’s Border Collie & Animal Rescue commented: “We would like to thank everyone at Eukanuba for supporting our charity by giving our dogs a high quality, nutritious diet to enable them to achieve their full potential to live a long, happy and healthy life with their new family.

"The food donation from Eukanuba means that we can invest funds into other areas, particularly animal welfare, to enable us to help even more rescue animals that are in desperate need for a new and loving home.”

Ceva launches new pheromone support for cats
Ceva Animal Health has launched an innovative new pheromone – FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY – to help with the frustrating issue of cats scratching household furniture...
Ceva Animal Health has launched an innovative new pheromone – FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY – to help with the frustrating issue of cats scratching household furniture.

It joins the popular FELIWAYCLASSIC (F3 pheromone) and FELIWAY FRIENDS (cat appeasing pheromone) ranges.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY is a synthetic copy of the feline interdigital semiochemical (FIS) naturally produced by cats and is the only product clinically proven to help redirect scratching behaviour onto a desired location.

It helps control both vertical and horizontal scratching and helps prevent inappropriate scratching with newly adopted cats or kittens.

It is available in a pack of nine single use 5ml pipettes which should be applied on a scratching post to redirect the scratching.

The product uniquely attracts cats in three ways, the blue staining mimics the visual message (scratch marks), catnip helps attract the cat to the scratching post, while the pheromone directs cat scratching on the surface where the product has been applied. It is easy to use and one pack lasts for up to four weeks.

FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY can be used alongside FELIWAY CLASSIC if the owner is experiencing stress-related scratching or alongside FELIWAY FRIENDS for conflicts in the home.

“Scratching is a major problem in cat owning households with many owners experiencing damaged carpets, sofas and other household furniture,” comments Claire Russell, pheromone product manager at Ceva Animal Health.

“FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY can help redirect scratching onto a desired location, such as a scratching post, and can be used in conjunction with FELIWAY CLASSIC and FELIWAY FRIENDS to help prevent other stress-related behaviours.”

Ceva Animal Health has launched a range of marketing material to support the launch of FELISCRATCH by FELIWAY including a pet owner leaflet, posters, wobblers and a digital pack containing social media posts, product pack shots, logo and videos.

For information on FELIWAY visit www.feliway.com/uk.
