According to UK Pet Food, there are an estimated 700,000 pet guinea pigs in the UK, with around 1.2% of UK households owning at least one.
Set against the backdrop of one of Suffolk’s best-loved attractions, the event is expected to welcome families, pet lovers and devoted guinea pig parents alike for what promises to be the cutest - and squeakiest - festival of the summer.
Highlights planned for the day include:
- Meet familiar faces from social media and the brands you love
- Expert talks and care advice
- Family entertainment and activities
- Special guest appearances
- Shopping from leading pet brands and independents
- Competitions and giveaways
- Social-media-friendly photo opportunities throughout the venue
- Explore Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park with over 100 species and breeds. Home to Europe’s largest polar bear reserve, brown bears, big cats and more

The festival also celebrates the growing popularity of guinea pigs as companion animals, while championing responsible pet ownership and the happiness small pets bring to families across the UK. It will also support Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park's ongoing commitment to animal education, helping visitors learn more about guinea pig welfare, enrichment and responsible ownership.
Influencers and content creators from across the pet world will be joining the fun, with live social coverage throughout the day and plenty of opportunities for visitors to share their own guinea pig stories, photos and favourite Piggy Fest memories online.
There will be no public guinea pig handling in the Piggy Fest Festival area for welfare reasons - but visitors will be able to follow a family friendly trail to Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park’s famous Guinea Pig Village to see the resident guineas in their large, safe enclosure - featuring a pub, corner shop, café, church and nail bar!

Claire Hamblion-Jennings, Marketing Director at event sponsor, Supreme Petfoods says: “If you love guinea pigs, this is your Latitude! Piggy Fest celebrates the special role these little pets play in family life, bringing together pet lovers, experts, brands and the wider guinea pig community for a day that promises plenty of fun.”
HayPigs! Co-founder ‘The Guinea Pig Guy’, Rik Cridland added: “We wanted to create something that feels joyful, welcoming and a little bit bonkers in the best possible way! Piggy Fest is all about celebrating the wonderful world of guinea pigs and the people who love them - expect cute moments, happy chaos, brilliant people and lots and lots of piggy themed fun!”
Stevie Sheppard, Park Director at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, says: “We’re delighted to be hosting Piggy Fest and supporting fantastic partners like HayPigs! and Supreme Petfoods, who share our passion for animal welfare and education. As soaring household bills continue to squeeze family budgets, an increasing number of Britons are turning to an unlikely alternative to traditional pets – pigs.
While dogs remain the nation's favourite companion animal, rising veterinary fees, insurance premiums, grooming costs and pet food bills are prompting some animal lovers to think outside the kennel.
According to industry estimates, the average dog can cost owners around £250 a month once food, insurance, routine healthcare, toys and other essentials are taken into account. Veterinary treatment costs have also risen sharply in recent years, with some emergency procedures running into thousands of pounds.
By contrast, miniature pigs can cost as little as £40 a month to keep, making them an increasingly attractive option for households feeling the pinch.
At Buckinghamshire-based Kew Little Pigs, owner Olivia Mikhail says enquiries for piglets have risen as the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite.
The farm, which specialises in miniature pet pigs, currently has several litters expected this summer and says demand remains strong despite the challenging economic climate.
Olivia said: "We have definitely seen an increase in people looking at pigs as an alternative to dogs. The cost of living is affecting everybody and people are looking very carefully at what they can realistically afford.
"With fuel prices rising again because of the conflict involving Iran, many families are finding that every penny counts. Pigs can be much more affordable to keep than dogs, while still offering companionship, intelligence and personality in abundance.
"People are often surprised when they discover just how trainable pigs are. They can learn to sit, stay, walk on a lead and even take part in agility-style activities."
Indeed, pigs are proving so capable that some are now competing in activities traditionally reserved for dogs.
One devoted owner, Victoria Wiseman, an actor and children's entertainer from Colchester, says she would not swap her pigs Peanut and Basil for anything.
The pair, adopted from Kew Little Pigs, have become beloved members of her family, with Peanut developing an impressive collection of skills.
"I gave up on humans a long time ago," Victoria jokes. "I have found that pigs are so intelligent.
"When I was growing up there were pigs that lived at a property near me, and I loved to go visit them, chat to them and give them little treats.
"There is something about them. I would say they are a cross between a dog and a cat. They can be aloof at times but they are also so affectionate."
Peanut has even taken part in Hoopers, a popular dog sport involving hoops, barrels and tunnels that tests an animal's focus, teamwork and agility.
While dogs traditionally dominate the world of pet training, Victoria says pigs are more than capable of keeping up. "Pigs are less demanding than dogs, but they still train like a dog," she says.
Peanut has also tackled agility equipment including seesaws, although his increasing size means younger pig Basil is now taking over some of the more energetic activities.
Victoria's love affair with pigs began years before she became an owner. She first contacted Kew Little Pigs four years before bringing home Peanut and her late pig Noodle, ensuring she was fully prepared for the responsibility.
That preparation is something Olivia insists upon for every prospective owner.
Unlike many pets, Kew Little Pigs operates a rigorous screening process before any piglet leaves the farm. Owners pay around £850 for a piglet and must demonstrate they have adequate outdoor space, suitable facilities and a long-term commitment to the animal's welfare.
Prospective owners are also required to complete a comprehensive pig-keeping course and are encouraged to spend time with pigs before making a decision.
"We work incredibly hard to make sure our pigs go to the right homes," Olivia said.
"They are intelligent, sensitive animals and they deserve owners who understand their needs. We won't place a pig unless we are confident the family can provide the right environment.
"Our pig-keeping course covers everything from feeding and healthcare to behaviour and legal requirements."
Those legal requirements include DEFRA regulations governing the movement of pigs. Owners wishing to take their pigs for walks on public land must comply with strict rules, including obtaining the necessary permissions and notifying authorities of walking routes. For many owners, however, the extra paperwork is a small price to pay for the companionship pigs provide.
Following the death of her beloved pig Noodle from a brain tumour earlier this year, Victoria noticed Peanut showing signs of grief. She subsequently welcomed Basil into the family and the pair quickly formed a close bond.
Now, whether they're tackling Hoopers courses, enjoying a walk or simply relaxing at home, Victoria says she has never regretted her unconventional choice of pet.
"People say, 'Why pigs?' and I say, 'Why not?'" she said. "A lot of people still don't realise how clever they are. Once you get to know them, they completely win you over."

Recipe book launched for 20th Rabbit Awareness Week
As the UK’s leading rabbit welfare campaign marks its 20th year, Rabbit Awareness Week has launched a new recipe book designed to help owners improve rabbit nutrition through simple, practical feeding ideas...
As the UK’s leading rabbit welfare campaign marks its 20th year, Rabbit Awareness Week has launched a new recipe book designed to help owners improve rabbit nutrition through simple, practical feeding ideas.
The launch supports this year’s RAW theme, ‘Feeding Bunnies Better’, and gives consumers a practical way to make healthier choices for their rabbits.
Created with support from charities, welfare organisations and rabbit experts, the new 20 Recipes for 20 Years book brings together 20 rabbit-friendly recipes that focus on enrichment, variety and a balanced, hay-first approach to feeding. The book is designed to make healthy feeding feel more accessible for owners.
The launch comes at a time when clearer owner education is still lacking. Nearly one in five rabbits (18%) are still being fed muesli, despite links between muesli-style diets, selective feeding and health issues including dental disease and digestive problems.
Suzanne Moyes, Deputy Managing Director and in-house vet at Burgess Excel, said: “We’re so excited about launching this recipe book which is packed with healthy, varied, fibre-rich recipes for rabbits from people who understand, own and work with them every day. We want it to feel easy and practical to make positive changes to a rabbit’s daily diet. We hope that bunnies and their owners enjoy exploring the ideas together and sharing the results with us.”
The book is organised into four sections: Daily Bunny Bites, From Field to Forage, Build, Play and Explore and Special Occasions. It gives owners a mix of everyday feeding ideas and more creative enrichment.
Recipes range from simple favourites like Herb‑it‑Jo Mix and Hay, Banana and Mint Bakes to more seasonal and forage-led ideas such as Meadow Forage Medley and Delilah’s Flowery Forage, alongside interactive options including a Dandelion Dig Pot or Bunny Bento Box.
There are even celebratory ideas like a Bunny Birthday Piñata and Hidden Centre Hay Cake, all designed to show how small changes can add variety, support a fibre-rich diet and make feeding time more engaging.
The recipe book forms part of the wider Rabbit Awareness Week 2026 resource pack and sits alongside other campaign materials created to help owners, retailers, rescues and vets support better rabbit welfare.
It is also designed to reflect the collaborative nature of RAW, with recipes contributed by supporters including RSPCA, Blue Cross, Woodgreen, Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare and the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund, alongside rabbit influencer Sarah @ronnietheminilop, Dr Sonya Miles, Burgess Excel Rabbit Vet of the Year, and nutrition experts at Burgess Excel.
Miriam Dowding, Operations Manager at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, said: “This recipe book puts a real spotlight on hay and fresh greens, two essential elements of a rabbit’s diet. Often the rabbits that enter our care have not had the fresh and varied diet that bunnies really need, so we see how important that is first hand.”

As the UK’s leading rabbit welfare campaign, Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) returned this June for its 20th year, focus is being placed on the link between better feeding standards for rabbits and better commercial outcomes for retailers.
For two decades, RAW has brought together veterinary professionals, charities, retailers and owners to improve rabbit welfare across the UK. This year’s theme, ‘Feeding Bunnies Better’, builds on that legacy by positioning nutrition as a key driver of both rabbit health and enhanced customer relationships.
According to the latest PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) report, nearly one in five rabbits (18%) are still being fed a muesli mix as one of their main food types, despite muesli-style diets being linked to selective feeding and potential health issues such as dental disease and digestive problems. The findings highlight an ongoing need for retailers to play a more active role in educating owners to promote better feeding for rabbits.
For retailers that are guiding customers towards the correct nutrition, there’s a clear business benefit as it can drive sales, boost customer loyalty and increase repeat spending.

Suzanne Moyes, Deputy Managing Director and In-house Vet at Burgess Pet Care, said: “The key step that retailers should take is to encourage rabbit owners in moving towards hay-first diets supported by nutritious single component nuggets, helping to move away from outdated muesli-based feeding and towards a healthier, fibre-first approach centred on quality hay.
“Hay needs to be a daily essential for rabbit owners, it should always be freely available to rabbits and replenished daily, to ensure it forms the majority of their diet. Retailers should encourage customers to purchase hay that is made from 100% natural ingredients, is high in fibre and supports rabbits dental and respiratory health.
“Educating customers on this narrative promotes better rabbit nutrition and also creates the need for consistent, repeat purchasing behaviour that retailers can benefit from. In contrast to more occasional purchases, increasing hay consumption drives regular footfall and basket spend, positioning it as a core category for sustained revenue.”
Encouraging better feeding also supports stronger, longer-term customer relationships. Rabbits that are fed a fibre-rich diet are more likely to stay healthier, helping owners feel confident in their care and remain engaged in investing in their animals over time. As these customers become better informed, they are also more likely to trade up to higher-quality products, including nutritious nuggets, treats, toys and enrichment items.
Additionally, by actively promoting better rabbit nutrition and offering clear, practical advice, retailers can also position themselves as trusted experts - a key factor in driving loyalty and repeat visits. Helping customers avoid diet-related health issues can prevent negative experiences that may otherwise impact future spending or damage store reputation.
Rae Walters, Director of the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), said: “Rabbit Awareness Week has become a trusted and influential campaign over the past 20 years, bringing the industry together to improve rabbit welfare across the UK. As we mark the 20-year milestone, ‘Feeding Bunnies Better’ is about using that legacy to drive further change, particularly when it comes to nutrition.
“Diet remains one of the most common areas of misunderstanding in rabbit care. Ensuring rabbits have constant access to good quality hay, supported by nutritious single component nuggets and a balanced diet, is fundamental to their health.
“Retailers are in a unique position to influence this at the point of purchase. By making feeding guidance simpler and clearer and supporting owners to make the right choices, they can help owners build confidence that they are feeding their rabbits better – which ultimately benefits both the animal and the retailer.”
To help support this shift towards better awareness of rabbit nutrition, retailers can provide clear educational materials in-store, such as feeding guides and information leaflets explaining the risks associated with muesli-based diets and the benefits of fibre-rich alternatives. Some retailers may also choose to reduce the prominence of muesli products by moving them behind the counter, limiting shelf space or removing them altogether, helping to encourage more informed purchasing decisions and better long-term rabbit welfare.
Burgess is encouraging small animal retailers to sign up to the ‘Feeding Bunnies Better’ pledge. To access campaign resources, in-store support materials and guidance designed to help drive customer engagement and improve feeding awareness in the lead-up to Rabbit Awareness Week, visit: RAW Pack Download | Rabbit Awareness Week

Jollyes Pets, officially opened the doors to its new store at Houndstone, Yeovil in some style provided by the King of Rock n Roll himself.
Customers were greeted by an Elvis look-a-like performing some of the King's biggest hits, including Hound Dog —a nod to the store’s location at Houndstone Retail Park. The set also featured crowd-pleasers such as All Shook Up and the Wonder of You.
The first VIP (Very Important Pet) through the doors was local puppy Duke a boxer cross, who wasted no time sniffing out the natural treats range in store and received a Lifestage goody bag to celebrate being the first paws through the door.
Performing the official red ribbon cutting was Mayor Tony Lock alongside retail and supply chain director David Stokes, members of the Jollyes management and store team, and Jollyes mascot Molly.

Joining them was Ben, a retired prison service dog supported by the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) – Jollyes’ national charity partner, with handler Mark Stroud.
Ben is a six-year-old black labrador who served with the prison service for nearly five years.
Throughout his service, Ben was often paired with visitors who were nervous around dogs thanks to his calm and gentle nature, helping many to overcome their fears.
Known for his trademark “happy feet” dance whenever he greeted someone, Ben became a much-loved member of the team. Now retired, he has settled into sofa life with ease and will continue to be supported by the NFRSA.
The NFRSA helps support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family - the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.
Visitors enjoyed a day full of fur-tastic fun, including meeting Yeovil FC mascot the Jolly Green Giant. They also had the chance to win prizes on Jollyes’ iconic Wheel of Fur-tune as well as a football game to celebrate the World Cup.

The new store has created seven roles and is run by store manager Jason Freeman. Jason has a cockapoo called Molly and previously had several cats and dachshunds as pets.
Jason said: “We’re delighted to finally open the doors and welcome customers to the new store here in Yeovil.
“It was great to see so many dogs come and see their new pet store, including our first VIP paws through the door - Duke.
“The whole team here is excited to bring their pet expertise and value that’s been making a real difference to pet parents right across the UK.”

Now trading from 123 stores, in April Jollyes released the locations of over 160 towns and cities right across Britain where it would like to open new stores over the next five years, should the right sites become available.
Jollyes next store to open will be at Wyvern Retail Park in Derby (10 July).

Recent statistics from the European Union reveal that up to 29% of employees experience work-related stress, depression, or anxiety.
By embracing a One Health approach, fostering the human-animal bond and welcoming dogs into the workplace, organisations can introduce a straightforward yet impactful way to cultivate a more positive, supportive, and rewarding environment for their staff.
Pets can have a positive impact at work, with 67% of employees reporting lower stress levels when pets are present and 63% acknowledging that pets help strengthen relationships between colleagues.
Recognising these benefits, Ceva Animal Health has introduced its Pets at Work programme, allowing dogs in the workplace under carefully managed conditions.
This initiative is demonstrating tangible benefits by reducing stress levels, fostering stronger collegial bonds, and creating a more enjoyable workplace atmosphere.
“For Ceva, allowing dogs into the office was a no-brainer. We have always cherished the unique bond between humans and animals, a bond that forms one of the cornerstones of our mission: OneHealth. This programme is a tangible, day-to-day expression of that,” said Marc Prikazsky, Executive Chairman of Ceva (pictured above).
Ceva encourages other businesses to consider welcoming pets into their offices, similar to their own ‘Pets at Work’ initiative launched to great success at the companies headquarters on March 25th 2026, and expanding to more regions.
Dr. Sarah Endersby BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS, offers vet-approved guidance to help workplaces and pet owners prepare for this change:
Tips for Pet-Friendly Workplaces:
- Companies who wish to implement these policies or initiatives should create clear guidelines, including charters, Q&A’s, codes of conduct, that can be shared and explained to their employees and participants.
- Ensure all visiting pets are fully vaccinated to meet health and safety standards.
- Begin with a trial period, such as a “Bring Your Pet to Work Day” or allowing a limited number of pets to assess suitability.
- Implement a rota or booking system to manage the number of dogs in the office and maintain a comfortable environment.
- Adapt office spaces to be pet-friendly by creating designated areas for feeding, hydration, and rest, while pet-proofing key zones.
- Encourage clear communication between pet owners and colleagues, including asking permission before pets interact or enter meeting rooms.
- Establish procedures for handling incidents or accidents promptly, including access to cleaning supplies and clear reporting channels.
- Guide responsible pet behaviour in the workplace, reminding owners to manage excitement and prevent excessive barking.
Advice for Dog Owners Bringing Pets to Work:
- Start training at home, focusing on basic obedience and calm behaviour.
- Introduce dogs gradually to new people and environments. If your dog tends to get over-excited when meeting others, teaching them to respond calmly will help prevent overwhelming behaviour in the workplace.
- Familiarise pets with the commute to and from the office. Start by trialling the journey on weekends or off-peak times so they become settled on the journey.
- Adapt the workspace to provide your dog with a quiet, safe area away from busy foot traffic, free from hazards like exposed wires, with non-slip flooring and a designated spot for their food, water, and enrichment.
- Bring everything necessary for your pet’s wellbeing with you to work, such as water bowls, waste bags, and treats with prior consent.
- Gradually increase the time and frequency your dog spends in the office, starting with half-days and monitoring their behaviour closely to ensure they stay comfortable and relaxed.
In response to growing challenges around stress and employee satisfaction, adopting pet-friendly policies represents a promising path toward healthier workplaces. Ceva’s Pets at Work initiative stands as a leading example of how integrating pets into the office can effectively boost wellbeing and help prevent burnout.
A long-term initiative that is being rolled out internationally
Pets at Work is not a first for Ceva on an international scale: the programme is already implemented in several sales offices in Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom. With PULSE, Ceva is taking a new step forward by rolling out the initiative at the very heart of the company. This is a long-term approach that illustrates the group’s commitment to sustainably evolving its practices in line with its values.

Independent retailers welcome government action on VAT fraud

Independent retailers have welcomed government proposals to tackle VAT fraud through online marketplaces, describing the move as a positive step towards creating a fairer trading environment for UK retailers while urging ministers to move quickly from consultation to implementation.
The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira), which has been campaigning on the issue for more than 18 months, said it was pleased to see action on extending online marketplace VAT liability rules to UK-based businesses, helping to address unfair competition faced by compliant retailers.
Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: "We are pleased that the Treasury has acted on our campaign to streamline the rules on VAT charges for online marketplaces. This proposal goes some way towards evening up the playing field for UK high street retailers who have been fighting for survival against unfair competition.
"The current regime has long been ripe for reform. Honest retailers who pay the correct taxes should not be disadvantaged by businesses that exploit complexity in the system or fail to meet their VAT obligations.
"We welcome the consultation and will engage fully with the process. The government has recognised that VAT non-compliance can distort competition and disadvantage legitimate businesses, both online and on the high street.
"We already have a system in place for overseas sellers using online marketplaces, which demonstrates that marketplace responsibility can work effectively. We hope the consultation proceeds as quickly as possible and leads to practical measures that support compliant retailers without creating unnecessary burdens."
Bira will respond to the consultation on behalf of its members and continue to campaign for measures that ensure fair competition between online and high street retailers.
The association represents over 6,000 independent businesses across the UK and has consistently called for stronger action to tackle VAT fraud and create a level playing field for responsible retailers.

Urgent advice for owners as temperatures soar
With red and amber warnings for extreme heat issued by the Met Office this week, the British Veterinary Association is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect animals from heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses...

With red and amber warnings for extreme heat issued by the Met Office this week, the British Veterinary Association is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to protect animals from heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.
Every summer, vet teams across the UK see large numbers of pets requiring treatment for conditions linked to hot weather, including heatstroke, burnt paw pads, sunburn and breathing difficulties. Sadly, some animals do not survive.
Dogs can be particularly vulnerable during periods of high temperatures and humidity because, unlike people, they cannot cool themselves efficiently through sweating. Even a short walk during the hottest part of the day or being left in a vehicle for a few minutes can have devastating consequences. Flat-faced breeds, including bulldogs and pugs, face an even greater risk because their shorter muzzles can make breathing more difficult, reducing their ability to cool themselves through panting. Overweight animals and those with thick coats are also at increased risk.
As temperatures rise, ensure your pets have access to fresh drinking water, adequate ventilation and shade from direct sunlight at all times. When it comes to dogs, walks should be limited to the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower. On particularly hot days, it may be safest to skip walks altogether.
Take the five-second tarmac test before taking your dog outside. Place the palm of your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog's paws. It’s equally important to remember never to leave a dog in a car, caravan or conservatory, even for a short period. Temperatures can rise rapidly and become life-threatening within minutes.
Recognising the signs of heatstroke can help save a pet's life. In dogs, these signs include heavy panting, excessive drooling, restlessness, bright red or very pale gums, and a lack of coordination. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them immediately to a cool, well-ventilated area, offer small amounts of cold water if they are able to drink, and pour cold water over them to help bring their temperature down. You should then seek urgent advice from your vet.
If you have rabbits and guinea pigs you too can take steps to help keep them cool. Provide additional shade, ensure constant access to fresh water and good ventilation, and covering the tops of wire runs with damp towels can help. For rabbits, lightly misting the ears with cool water may also be effective, provided this does not cause distress.
Taking these simple and sensible precautions can make difference. Finally, if you are concerned that a pet may be suffering from a heat-related condition speak to your vet immediately.

Failing to get a permit for veterinary waste has seen a pet cremation firm pay for environmental improvements.
Thanks to Environment Agency intervention, Valley Pet Crematorium in Paignton has agreed to pay £60,000 to Westcountry Rivers Trust as part of its mission to improve the passage of salmon and other fish in the Teign catchment.
Jonathan Macqueen of the Environment Agency said: "While no environmental harm resulted from this mistake, the rules are there to protect the environment and ensure a level playing field across the waste industry.
"Carrying, storing and dealing with different types of waste requires a permit and we firmly regulate industry to make sure everyone is compliant with the law."
Valley Pet Crematorium failed to get a new permit to run a clinical waste transfer station when it moved from Exeter to a new site in Aspen Way, Paignton, in January 2023.
While the firm had a valid waste carrier licence, a separate permit was needed to store healthcare waste it collected from veterinary practices and brought back to the Paignton facility. The mistake came to light 18 months later during an Environment Agency compliance investigation.
Once the issue became known, Valley Pet Crematorium was told to immediately stop storing and remove any veterinary waste. The firm also had to apply for a new permit.
Valley Pet Crematorium continued to collect waste but took it directly to approved sites for disposal. A new permit was issued in November 2024 which allowed storage at the Paignton premises.
Valley Pet Crematorium told the Environment Agency ‘it is a matter of intense regret that the company did not obtain the permit in the timely manner it should have done’. The firm has offered an enforcement undertaking – a sanction that avoids prosecution in return for funding environmental projects. It also invested heavily into a waste management tracking system.
A spokesperson for Westcountry Rivers Trust said: "This funding will deliver direct and lasting benefits for the River Teign and the fish species that depend on it.
"Although no pollution or fish fatalities resulted from this case, the Enforcement Undertaking process allows money to be put back into direct environmental improvements. We will use the £60,000 contribution to remove or ease significant barriers to fish migration, helping Atlantic salmon, trout and European eel reach spawning and nursery habitats.
"We expect this work to reconnect at least 10km of river habitat across the Teign catchment. That means a better chance for migratory fish to complete their life cycles and a healthier, more resilient river system.
"This project also complements wider nature recovery work across the catchment, including habitat restoration, barrier removal and action to restore more natural river processes."

A new study by researchers from the University of Sussex and the University of Exeter, and supported by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), has found microplastics in over three-quarters of pet food products tested.
The discovery has revealed a hidden source of plastic pollution that could be affecting pets, including cats and dogs, and wild animals such as hedgehogs.
The research, published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, analysed 38 different dog, cat, and hedgehog food products sold in the UK. Microplastics were detected in 84% of brands and 27% of all samples tested, with cheaper ‘value range’ products containing more than more expensive products.
“We found microplastics in 16 out of the 19 brands we tested, including very well-known ones,” said the lead researcher, PhD student Emily Thrift. “Given the huge number of pets in the UK, as well as hedgehogs and other wild mammals which are fed these foods to supplement their diets, this represents a major, previously overlooked pathway for plastic to enter terrestrial ecosystems.”
Despite higher concentrations in dry food, wet food leads to higher daily microplastic intake because larger portions are needed to meet energy requirements. The researchers estimate that a large dog could ingest between 162 and 2,314 microplastic particles per day, depending on the food type and brand selected, which would later be excreted, potentially contaminating soil.
Many wild animals are also fed pet foods in gardens, and hedgehogs could consume between 6 and 105 microplastics per day. This may also have potential implications for pet and wildlife health, although this was not the focus of this research.
Fay Vass, Chief Executive for BHPS, said: “It’s of great concern that this study has shown hedgehogs in Britain appear to be consuming high levels of plastic – although we are not yet sure of the impacts of this on hedgehog health, we do know that toxins can accumulate on microplastic particles.
"Microplastics are an increasing presence across the natural environment as well as the wider food chain, which is a broader issue of growing concern that must be addressed. Exposure to microplastics should be reduced wherever possible to help minimise this unnecessary risk.”
“Microplastics are not just a marine problem,” said Professor Fiona Mathews, Professor of Environmental Biology at the University of Sussex and overseer of the research. “Our pets may be inadvertently spreading plastic pollution through their food and faeces, affecting wildlife and the wider environment.”
At present, the sources of contamination are unclear, and further research is now needed to find out whether ingredient quality, packaging types, or processing methods, are the main contributors to the problem.
Professor Tamara Galloway, Professor of Ecotoxicology at the University of Exeter, said: “Our results are a reminder that our pets are exposed to the same chemical pollutants as ourselves. Cleaning up the food chain is a crucial target for the future.”

UK fresh dog food company Tuggs has secured its first major retail partnership with Jollyes. The brand’s' fresh meal recipes are now available across Jollyes stores nationwide, spanning locations from Edinburgh to Hailsham.
The partnership represents a landmark step for the UK startup, which launched in late 2022 with a mission to tackle two of the pet industry's biggest problems: the poor nutritional quality of commercial dog food and its significant environmental footprint. Tuggs' recipes are made from fresh, natural ingredients with sustainability built into every step of the process.
The timing reflects a growing awareness among UK dog owners of the link between diet and long-term health. Research suggests that dogs fed fresh food could live up to 32 months longer than those fed commercial dry food – a statistic that has driven rapid growth in the fresh pet food category.
With over half of UK dogs currently suffering from obesity or other diet-related health issues, Tuggs believes access to better food should not be limited to online-only shoppers.
Founder Harry Bremner said: “Seeing Tuggs on a real shelf for the first time is something I’ve been looking forward to for years. But what makes this partnership special is that Jollyes genuinely shares our belief that dogs deserve fresh, properly made food.
“They’ve invested in frozen capacity, they’ve committed to growing the fresh category, and they’ve backed a small startup like us to be part of that. Our subscription model is still the heart of what we do, but we know it’s not for everyone.
“Consumers have long been telling us they want a way to try Tuggs without that commitment, whether that’s picking up a few pouches to see what all the fuss is about, grabbing one for a friend’s dog, or topping up between deliveries. Now they can. This is a huge milestone for Tuggs and we’re proud to begin our retail journey.”
All recipes are developed by vet nutritionist Katie McCaul BSc DipNat VN ANutR, backed by a network of independent vets, and have been rigorously tested to ensure every dog gets exactly what they need to thrive.
Founded after Harry began researching the dog food industry and was struck by the scale of its carbon footprint and the lack of genuine nutritional rigour in commercial products, Tuggs has grown from a kitchen-table idea to a brand trusted by over 10,000 UK dog owners – and this retail partnership marks the next chapter of that journey.

The Pet Industry Federation has launched GARD (Guidance for Advertising, Review and Drafting) a tool designed to help businesses assess the advertising risk of pet supplements and other non-medicinal veterinary products.
GARD is intended to support responsible marketing by helping users identify wording that may risk presenting a product as a veterinary medicine.
GARD is aimed at manufacturers, brand owners, marketers, technical teams and regulatory reviewers involved in developing packaging, leaflets, websites, testimonials and other promotional materials for non-medicinal veterinary products in the pet sector.
PIF created GARD to provide a clearer way of reviewing advertising wording against the core principle that non-medicinal veterinary products should be presented only as supporting or maintaining health in healthy animals. They should not be presented as treating, preventing, curing, restoring, correcting or modifying disease or physiological functions in a medicinal way. The framework has been developed against the current regulatory backdrop, including Veterinary Medicines Directorate guidance on advertising non-medicinal veterinary products published on 14 January 2026.
Using a Green, Amber, Amber-Red and Red structure, ‘GARD’ helps users review wording individually and in combination across channels including packaging, leaflets, websites and testimonials. It is an advisory screening tool to support best practice and does not replace legal review.
Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, said: “‘GARD’ has been developed to help businesses navigate an area that can often feel unclear in practice. By giving companies a more structured way to review wording and presentation, we hope it will support better decision-making and encourage high standards in the marketing of non-medicinal veterinary products across the pet sector.”
‘GARD’ can be accessed through PIF as part of its wider support for compliant and responsible product marketing. It is a free to PIF members, and will cost £150 + VAT to non-members. To access ‘GARD’, email info@petfederation.co.uk

Green Pantry, the natural dog nutrition brand recently acquired by the owners of Burgess Pet Care, is launching a new line of freshly cooked, easy-to-store dog food. Developed in direct partnership with the veterinary experts at Pickles Vets, the new range brings expert-led, functional nutrition to help pet owners better support their dogs’ health.
Understanding the common reasons dogs visit vets was a key part of the new products. The range features four specific recipes focusing on weight control, mobility and joint health (especially for senior dogs), skin and coat care, and digestive care. These specialised diets are designed to give pet owners a simple, practical way to support their companions every single day.
The veterinary team at Pickles recognised a specific market need for diets that bridge the gap between clinical support and everyday feeding. As the team at Pickles explains: “There are some excellent options available for pet owners in the UK, but we felt there was room for something new. This range brings together functional health formulation and quality natural ingredients in a way that feels simple and accessible for everyday use.”
Pickles Vets wanted to provide bespoke nutrition that directly addresses the issues they treat daily in their clinics, beyond general wellness. They go on to explain: “Working with Green Pantry and Burgess gave us the opportunity to have direct input into the formulations. Each recipe reflects the conditions our team sees most often in practice, from digestive health, skin and coat, weight management, and joint support, particularly in older dogs. The result is a range built around carefully selected proteins, natural botanicals, and targeted functional inclusions, all formulated to FEDIAF guidelines.”
Dr. Suzanne Moyes from Burgess Pet Care and Green Pantry commented on balancing specific needs with great taste and convenient feeding habits. “This was achieved over an 18 month process, which is much longer than our normal NPD timelines. The complexity of our desired outcome meant it involved a lot of back and forth between our nutritionists, the veterinary team at Pickles and our ingredient and nutritional suppliers, which was then followed by more than a few rounds of product testing.”

The new, freshly cooked range is available in four formats (Digestive Care, Weight Control, Mobility & Senior and Skin and Coat Care). The range is available in 380g pouches or 3.04kg boxes with an RRP from £3.99 via the Green Pantry website and specialist pet retailers

FEDIAF, the voice of the European Pet Food Industry, has elected Greg Van Praagh as its new president, following a vote at the Association’s General Assembly held in Brussels.
Greg, who represents UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) and is co-founder of Benyfit Natural, succeeds Rosa Carbonell, who has served as FEDIAF president since 2022. The General Assembly also confirmed the full composition of the new Board of Directors, including the appointment of two vice-presidents and the election of two new board members.
Greg brings extensive experience at the intersection of pet food manufacturing, trade association leadership, and regulatory engagement. A co-founder of Benyfit Natural – a pioneering commercial raw pet food brand now part of the Snellman family – he served as Managing Director and subsequently as Head of UK & Europe at the Real Pet Food Company (RPFC).
He has been a prominent figure in UK and European pet food policy for nearly a decade. He served as chairman of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) – now UK Pet Food. During his chairmanship, he spearheaded the rebranding and modernisation of the Association. He has been an active member of the FEDIAF Board of Directors since his election to the Board in 2024.
Greg said: “It is a profound honour to be elected president of FEDIAF at such a pivotal moment for our industry.
“Europe’s pet food sector feeds hundreds of millions of beloved animals and supports tens of thousands of jobs across the continent.
“My focus will be on ensuring that our regulatory environment allows innovation to flourish, that we maintain the highest standards of safety and nutrition, and that we continue to make the compelling case for the important role pets play in people’s lives.
“I am grateful to the members for their trust, and I look forward to building on the exceptional work of my predecessor.”

Dragons’ Den pet brand wins £11m investment
Funding to help fight pet obesity crisis

Omni Pet, which starred in the BBC hit series Dragons' Den last year, has raised £11m to tackle mounting health problems like obesity and food allergies in our pets...

Omni Pet, which starred in the BBC hit series Dragons' Den last year, has raised £11m to tackle mounting health problems like obesity and food allergies in our pets.
The funding round was led by IW Capital, a London VC firm that invests into innovative, fast-growing UK SMEs.
Omni Pet, founded by experienced veterinarian Dr. Guy Sandelowsky and former investment banker Shiv Sivakumar, is aiming to tackle the obesity epidemic with calorie controlled, novel protein products backed by rigorous clinical research.
Dr Guy Sandelowsky said: "The pet sector is undergoing a structural shift with owners increasingly treating pets as family members, driving an unprecedented rise in demand for health-focused nutrition and personalised care.
"With chronic conditions in pets growing at double-digit rates, consumers are actively moving away from allergy-triggering and calorie-heavy brands. Omni Pet is leading this shift by bringing together clinical know-how and round-the-clock vet access to give pet owners practical, long-term support for their pets’ health."
Numerous studies have found that beef, chicken and dairy are amongst the most common food allergens in dogs. It is reported that these can commonly manifest as gut and skin symptoms such as diarrhoea and excess scratching.
Omni Pet’s innovative food, treats and supplement range replace traditional animal proteins with novel, high-quality yeast/algae/pulse-based alternatives in fat moderated recipes. These deliver veterinary-grade nutrition without many of the common triggers that can cause debilitating symptoms in dogs. It already has a 90% customer retention rate and is double ranked on Amazon’s top 10 Best Sellers for pet wellness, one of the most competitive D2C platforms.
The new capital will be used to accelerate customer acquisition online, expand into retail and to launch proprietary new products including an ‘Ozempic-style’ natural weight loss supplement for dogs that is completely drug free.
Alex Petri, Investment Director at IW Capital, said: "Omni Pet stands out for its exceptional growth and the clarity of its vision: to reshape a category that has seen little true innovation for decades. As consumers demand transparency and real health outcomes through clinically credible products, Omni Pet is positioned to lead the next wave of pet-wellness disruption. We’re backing Omni Pet because we believe the combination of veterinary expertise with strong data and its scalable subscription model represents one of the most compelling offerings in the sector."
Joining IW Capital and Redrice Ventures in this round are Rootbridge Capital, Digitalis Ventures, Lever VC, Ani.VC and Ami Capital. Earlier in 2025, Omni Pet appeared on Dragons’ Den where it received investment from Deborah Meaden and Steven Bartlett.
Deborah Meaden, prominent UK investor and entrepreneur, said: ‘Pet health is becoming an increasingly important issue, with more dogs struggling with obesity, allergies and other chronic health conditions. What impressed me about Omni from the beginning was its commitment to combining science and innovation without compromising on sustainability or ethics to tackle these problems properly. The team have continued to execute exceptionally well, building a fast-growing brand with real purpose behind it. That progress is exactly why I chose to double down and reinvest.’
In the last year, the business has grown over 10x, representing over 200% sales growth and more than 100,000 new customers since its Dragons’ Den debut.
Giles Humphries at Redrice Ventures, commented: "Great businesses solve real problems at scale. Omni is doing exactly that in one of the fastest-evolving consumer categories, combining clinical credibility, exceptional execution and products that pet owners genuinely love."

Premium pet food brand Encore, renowned for its natural ingredients and high-protein recipes, has expanded its cat range with the introduction of its new Encore Bone Broth Toppers to the UK market.
The new range has been developed to meet growing consumer demand for added-value pet nutrition, offering cat owners a simple and convenient way to add moisture while enhancing mealtime enjoyment.
Available in two protein-rich recipes – Chicken Bone Broth with Chicken Breast and Fish Bone Broth with Tuna Fillet – the toppers are made with 100% natural ingredients and real flakes of high-quality protein to increase palatability for even the fussiest felines.
Research shows that 54% of cat parents see long-term health as a primary driver when purchasing cat food, yet a staggering 62% still struggle to find products that align with their cat's specific nutritional requirements. Hydration is a key element for optimum cat health.
“Cat parents increasingly look for ways to encourage their pets to consume more moisture, particularly those feeding dry kibble,” said Robyn Long, Innovation Manager at Encore. “Our Bone Broth Toppers offer a practical, tasty way to add moisture while bringing additional flavour and texture, alongside high-quality protein and other essential nutrients to meals.”
Designed as both a meal enhancer and treat, the new range delivers incremental opportunities within the growing cat treats and toppers category, appealing to high-spend shoppers seeking premium, natural products.

Key product benefits include:
- Made with 100% natural ingredients
- No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives
- Adds moisture to meals
- Real protein flakes for added taste appeal
- Ideal over dry kibble or served alone as a treat
- Resealable spout pouch for freshness and portion control
- Fridge-safe for up to five days after opening
The range offers two single-flavoured products and a mixed variety multipack:
- Encore Chicken Bone Broth with Chicken Breast 85g
- Encore Fish Bone Broth with Tuna Fillet 85g
- Encore Variety Bone Broth Selection 4 x 85g
Encore says the launch reinforces its commitment to creating natural recipes with high-quality ingredients.
“We believe mealtimes should be a highlight of the day for pets and their owners.” said Robyn Long, Innovation Manager at Encore. “If we can’t make a better pet food, we won’t make it at all.”
As part of a Certified B Corporation, Encore continues to support sustainability initiatives across its business, including responsibly sourced fish and ongoing efforts to improve packaging sustainability through innovation and responsible material choices.
Robyn continued: “Not only does our cat bone broth range fulfil pet parent priorities, such as increased variety, improved texture and enhanced taste, but it also reflects our commitment to making thoughtful choices for pets, people and the planet as we continue to evolve our products, packaging and business practices.”

Jack Avery was crowned Inspiring Athlete of the Year, while Katie Parker was named Upcoming Entrepreneur of the Year.
For the Olney-based team, the recognition represents far more than personal achievement. It is a celebration of independent business, community spirit, rescue dogs and the belief that success can still be built through passion, honesty and hard work.
The MK Inspiration Awards celebrate individuals, organisations and businesses making a positive impact across Milton Keynes and the surrounding region, recognising excellence, innovation and contribution to the wider community.
Deputy Mayor of Milton Keynes City Council, Keith McLean, who attended the awards ceremony, praised the achievement, saying: “I was delighted to witness two winners from Olney. The first was Jack Avery as the Most Inspiring Sports Person and the second was Katie Parker as the Upcoming Entrepreneur. Apart from their awards they were also nominated in the Business of the Year Award as the owners of Pickles Pet Pantry located in Olney. A great evening for a wonderful husband and wife team!”

Boil & Broth Bone Broth Treats have been awarded The Dog Trainer School (TDTS) Recommended Product status following independent testing by professional dog trainers and dog professionals, achieving an Overall Product Score of 88%, exceeding the benchmark required for approval.
The treats were evaluated over a three-week period by 31 professionals using a wide range of breeds, ages and training contexts.
With increasing competition across the pet sector, independent recommendation marks are becoming an important way for brands and retailers to provide consumers with additional confidence in the products they stock and recommend.
The Dog Trainer School supports more than 330 force-free dog trainers and behaviour professionals and created the TDTS Recommended programme to provide practical, real-world feedback from professionals who regularly advise dog owners on product choices.
Feedback from testers highlighted strong dog engagement, ease of handling and suitability for training and enrichment activities.
Professional testers particularly praised:
- Excellent palatability and dog engagement
- Soft texture and ease of breaking into smaller pieces
- Suitability for training and enrichment activities
- Convenient handling and storage
- Consistent appeal across a wide range of dogs
Helen Wainwright, Co-Founder of The Dog Trainer School, said: "Retailers and brands are operating in an increasingly crowded marketplace, and consumers are faced with more choice than ever before.
"Dog trainers are often the people owners turn to for recommendations, so we wanted to create a programme that gives brands an opportunity to receive meaningful feedback from professionals and provides retailers and consumers with additional confidence in the products they stock and buy.
"Boil & Broth performed strongly across all our key scoring areas and received consistently positive feedback from our professional testing panel."
Before founding The Dog Trainer School, Helen Wainwright worked as a product tester for Good Housekeeping Magazine, helping to evaluate products for the Good Housekeeping Institute. That same evidence-led approach now underpins the TDTS Recommended programme, with products assessed using a clear scoring framework focused on ease of use, dog response, practical value and value for money.
Products awarded TDTS Recommended status may display the mark for 12 months, after which they are reassessed to ensure standards remain consistent.
For more information about The Dog Trainer School Recommended programme, visitwww.thedogtrainerschool.co.uk.

Direct4Pet – one of the UK’s largest online veterinary approved retailer and pharmacy – is calling on pet owners to take action against the rising risks of dehydration in cats and dogs.
July 1st marks the start of National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, created to highlight the dangers of heat exposure and the vital role hydration plays in keeping pets healthy.
Proper fluid intake supports organ function, digestion, joint lubrication, nutrient transport and temperature regulation — yet many pets simply aren’t drinking enough.
Direct4Pet director Garry Howard warns that dehydration can escalate quickly. Pets showing any of the following symptoms may already be in danger:
- Lethargy or unusual tiredness
- Sunken eyes
- Dry gums
- Loss of appetite
- Excessive panting
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Thick saliva
- Dark yellow urine
- Dark yellow urine
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
“If you notice these signs, you must act fast to get fluids back into your pet,” says Howard.
Dehydration is common during hot weather, after exercise, following illness or surgery, and in senior pets whose organs naturally slow with age. Brachycephalic breeds –including Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats – are especially vulnerable because they struggle to regulate body temperature.
Direct4Pet recommends a few easy steps:
- Keep multiple bowls of fresh water indoors and outdoors
- Try a pet water fountain for pets who prefer running water
- Add wet food to meals for extra moisture
- Offer low sodium chicken broth ice cubes or frozen seedless melon
- Carry a portable water bowl and water on outings
Pet hydration products are booming, with brands like Furr Boost and Oralade becoming household names. These drinks contain balanced electrolytes and minerals to support hydration more effectively than water alone – especially useful for:
- Active dogs after exercise
- Pets recovering from mild digestive upset
- Travel, holidays and outdoor adventures
- Senior cats or pets who drink poorly
These products are formulated specifically for pets and should never be confused with human sports drinks.
With so many options online, Direct4Pet advises pet owners to prioritise:
- Species specific formulas for dogs or cats
- High quality ingredients with no artificial sweeteners, preservatives or fillers
- Flavours pets love, such as chicken, beef or bone broth
- Suitability for your pet’s age, activity level and health status
Owners of pets with medical conditions should always consult a vet before using electrolyte solutions.
Cats naturally drink less due to their desert ancestry, meaning many live in a constant state of mild dehydration. Hydration support products designed for cats can help increase fluid intake – particularly for senior cats or those on dry food diets.
Hydration matters – all year round.
“Hydration is one of the most overlooked aspects of pet health,” says Howard. “Whether you’re supporting an active dog, encouraging an older cat to drink more, or helping a pet recover from illness, the right hydration support can make a real difference.”
Direct4Pet, an RCVS registered veterinary pharmacy, offers a full range of hydration products alongside prescription medicines, food, supplements and everyday essentials – all overseen by qualified veterinary professionals.
