Sustainable packaging is key driver for pet food purchases, claims new research

Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging solutions, has published new research that reveals the sustainability of packaging is a key factor for European pet owners when deciding which pet food to purchase...

Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging solutions, has published new research that reveals the sustainability of packaging is a key factor for European pet owners when deciding which pet food to purchase.

The study – which gathered insights from 1,693 shoppers in the UK, France, Germany and Italy – set out to understand the priorities and purchasing decisions of pet owners. These insights help brands to understand pet owners’ preferences and gain a competitive edge.

Respondents rate the product’s health benefits and trust in the brand as the most important purchasing factors. Pet parents prioritise the health of their pet above all else when selecting pet food products. In fact, 20% of pet owners report having bought healthier products for their cats in the last 12 months, and more than 1 in 5 pet owners purchase nutritional supplements for their pets.

Other key takeaways of the report include:

1. Sustainability is a growing priority

Sustainability is a key factor for pet owners when deciding which pet food to purchase. 76% of pet owners agree that product sustainability influences their purchase decisions.

The findings also reveal that many of these environmentally-conscious consumers look to a product’s packaging to help them differentiate between more sustainable and less sustainable options. Emphasising this point, 69% of consumers agree that the sustainability of the packaging is an important factor.

2. Recyclability claims are trusted most by pet food shoppers

European pet owners also have a preference when it comes to packaging sustainability claims, and which claims they trust and understand. The study reveals that recyclability claims resonate best with consumers, followed by ‘less plastic’ and ‘less packaging’ in order of preference. The results also highlight that only 15% of consumers are not impacted at all by packaging claims, underscoring the value that pet owners place on packaging, and the impact it can have on a brand’s position in the market. To communicate these claims, clear on-pack messaging is vital. In fact, on-pack messaging is ranked as more important than brand identity and reputation, emphasising that trust in a brand can be reinforced with more sustainable, recycle-ready packaging.

3. Shoppers are reluctant to compromise on quality and pay a premium to ensure the wellbeing of their pet

Despite current cost-of-living pressures, 1 in 3 consumers (32%) have not changed their budget for pet food, demonstrating their commitment to purchasing high-quality products that contribute to the health of their pet. Instead of switching to less expensive products, pet owners are opting for larger pet food packs to increase cost-efficiency.   For pet food brands, these findings affirm the move to larger, more sustainable packaging, such as Amcor’s recycle-ready Single Lip Bag. By offering larger packs, pet food brands can align with consumer preferences as well as maintain shelf life and product quality.

Madalina Mitru, Amcor's Marketing Manager, said: “The insights from the research illustrate how influential packaging is for pet food brands. Simply put, it directly drives purchasing decisions. By embracing more sustainable packaging solutions, pet food brands can make a stronger connection with their consumers.”

“Amcor launched the first recycle-ready retort pouch available on the wet pet food market – the AmLite® HeatFlex Recycle-Readypouch, and we continue to innovate in dry pet food packaging with our AmPrima® portfolio. Offering recycle-ready solutions with uncompromised product protection and run speeds, Amcor is committed to developing solutions that align with consumer preferences for both quality and sustainability, helping pet food brands get closer to their sustainability goals and appeal to pet parents.”

WHM Pet Group contributes to new rabbit feeding guide

WHM Pet Group has contributed its considerable nutrition expertise to an important new European guide on feeding pet rabbits...

WHM Pet Group has contributed its considerable nutrition expertise to an important new European guide on feeding pet rabbits.

The 2024 Nutritional Guidelines for Feeding Pet Rabbits has been produced by FEDIAF, the voice of the European Pet Food Industry, with contributions from Penny Ormsby, Technical Business Development Manager at WHM Pet Group.

FEDIAF is the spokesperson for approximately 375 companies, across 18 countries, largely with the European Union, but also Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. One of its main objectives is to maintain the wellbeing of pets through the provision of safe, well balanced and nutritionally sound pet food by its member companies.

The new guidelines provide the latest practical advice and scientifically backed recommendations for the optimal health and wellbeing of pet rabbits, considering both nutritionally ‘complete’ and ‘complementary’ diets, designed to be fed alongside forage and fresh foodstuffs.

Penny Ormsby was one of a team of experts who contributed to the Nutritional Guidelines for Feeding Pet Rabbits. The guidelines were originally drafted on behalf of FEDIAF by UK Pet Food and finalised with guidance from external experts within FEDIAF. The 2024 revised version was initiated by FEDIAF and with support from UK Pet Food has been updated but guest contributors and reviewed by external experts.

“As an active member of UK Pet Food we are delighted to have contributed to the guidelines to advance the overall health and wellbeing of Rabbits,” said Sam Marriage, Managing Director of WHM Pet Group. “The objectives of the Guidelines are a true reflection of what we aim to achieve across our portfolio of feeds: a comprehensive, high-quality feed range that’s healthy, nutritious and delicious.”

The 2024 Nutritional Guidelines for Feeding Pet Rabbits is now available at www.fediaf.org.

WHM Pet Group supplies retailers and farmers with premium quality wild bird, indoor bird, small animal, racing pigeon, pig, poultry and ruminant feeds.

National business recognition for independent pet retailer

Pickles Pet Pantry, an independent pet retailer in Olney, Buckinghamshire, is celebrating an outstanding achievement following its success at the National SME Business Awards...

Pickles Pet Pantry, an independent pet retailer in Olney, Buckinghamshire, is celebrating an outstanding achievement following its success at the National SME Business Awards.

Owner Katie Parker took home two prestigious silver awards at the ceremony held in the Bobby Moore Suite at Wembley Stadium, which was attended by over 600 guests.

Pickles Pet Pantry had already made a significant mark in the business world after winning two gold awards at the regional SME Awards for the Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire area earlier this year, in the categories of Retailer of the Year and New Business of the Year.

These wins qualified them to compete at the national level, where they were finalists in three categories: Retailer of the Year, Business Leader (Small Business), and Best New Business.

Katie Parker was awarded silver in the Business Leader (Small Business) category, a result of a public vote. She also earned a second silver award in the Best New Business category, which was judged by a panel.

Reflecting on her achievement, Kate said: "It still hasn't quite sunk in! When I started Pickles Pet Pantry, I never imagined I’d be standing here with two national awards. This recognition is a true testament to the hard work and support from my family and the local community. I’m beyond proud of all we have achieved. If you're unsure of what to do next in your career, feeling unhappy, or dreaming wild dreams, remember, there’s never a right time - taking the plunge might just be the chance you've been waiting for.

“None of this would have been possible without my business partners Pam Parker, David Parker, and Jack Avery."

Adding a heartwarming touch to the night, Kate was accompanied by Mac, the service dog, who also had a place at the table. Mac joined Katie and her family on stage to accept the second award, making for a memorable official image of the occasion.

Katie was joined at the event by representatives from businesses that have supported her journey, including GA Pet Foods, The Pet Industry Federation, and Tropiclean.

Former MP for Milton Keynes, Ben Everitt, was also present to offer congratulations.

The SME Business Awards celebrate the achievements of small and medium-sized enterprises across the UK, highlighting exceptional leadership, innovation, and community impact. The national finals at Wembley were a prestigious occasion, underscoring the magnitude of these recognitions in the UK business landscape.

UK veterinarians on brink of mental health crisis

New research points to a mental health crisis within the UK veterinary profession, as most vets surveyed (91%) report mental health issues directly related to their work...

New research points to a mental health crisis within the UK veterinary profession, as most vets surveyed (91%) report mental health issues directly related to their work.

The study, carried out by Zoetis, explores the attitudes and experiences of veterinarians living and working in the UK today - the findings shed light on a growing issue and reveals a critical ‘support-gap’ within the industry.

A stark majority of vets surveyed, say they know at least one other vet struggling with their mental health as a direct result of their work, either currently (57%) or in the past (46%). Despite this, over half (64%) believe there isn’t enough mental health support within the profession.

A further 37% of vets feel lack of in-practice support is the main contributing factor of mental-ill health in the industry today.

The research reveals the sheer workload and intensity of the job are the main culprits when it comes to impacting the mental health of vets, with general burnout (83%), work intensity (80%) and lack of work / life balance (74%) cited as the biggest contributing factors for vets themselves, and indeed, the industry as a whole.

Vets also feel under-valued at work, with almost half (49%) reporting feelings of being undervalued by pet owners and senior staff or management (40%). Financial concerns (31%) and lack of HR or structured management within practice (26%) are seen as further causes of mental health issues at work.

The research raises concerns about the future of the profession as the majority of vets (97%) say work related health issues have negatively impacted their job satisfaction.

When it comes to a roadmap for a healthier future, the majority of vets (78%) would like to see more accessible content on mental health within the industry and almost half (49%) think the topic needs to be spoken about more.

Vets would also welcome different resources to help address mental wellbeing in the industry, including counselling (64%), burnout recovery (64%) and training on coping tactics at university (61%).

Stephanie Armstrong, Senior Vice President at Zoetis and Independent Council Member for The Royal Veterinary College comments:

“Having worked in the industry for many years, I know what an incredible profession it is, but unfortunately, I am also acutely aware of the heavy mental health load many vets face. It’s clear from the research, more needs to be done to support these vital care givers.

The Zoetis Foundation continues to support VetLife and other initiatives aimed at caring for vets - our ambition is to work together with policy makers, industry leads and educators to offer new solutions and ensure the future prognosis of the profession is a healthy one.”

To date, the Zoetis Foundation has pledged over £2 million to support mental well-being initiatives, veterinary scholarships, debt relief, diversity and inclusion programmes in the UK and around the world. Recent grant funding has seen the Zoetis Foundation support the groundbreaking Vetlife ‘Neurodiversity Awareness Campaign 2024’, which is aimed at fostering an inclusive and supportive veterinary community.

Burgess Pet Care extends range for mature guinea pigs

Burgess Pet Care has expanded its successful Burgess Excel product range for small animals with the addition of Mature Guinea Pig Nuggets with Cranberry & Mint, which has been specially formulated for guinea pigs aged four and above...

Burgess Pet Care has expanded its successful Burgess Excel product range for small animals with the addition of Mature Guinea Pig Nuggets with Cranberry & Mint, which has been specially formulated for guinea pigs aged four and above.

Research from the University of Liverpool, supported by Burgess, suggests that there are around one million pet guinea pigs in the UK and over 35% of these are classed as mature (aged four and above).

Burgess’ Mature Guinea Pig Nuggets have been developed with ingredients that support guinea pigs’ specific needs as they age, comprising:

  • Joint Support: glucosamine provides cushioning for the joints.
  • Eye Health: the most common reason guinea pigs visit the vets is for eye-related issues. Marigolds contain carotenoids such as Lutein, an antioxidant found within the eye.
  • Brain Health: supplementing Mono, Di and Tri glycerides of fatty acids in the diet of mature animals can help to support brain health.
  • Supports Vitality: prebiotics and postbiotics enhance and support the wellbeing of pets.

Annabel Coleman, Excel brand manager at Burgess Pet Care, said: “We are really excited to introduce Burgess Excel Mature Guinea Pig Nuggets. We have worked hard to produce a high-quality recipe which has been specially formulated with vets and nutritionists, to ensure it offers the right balance of vitamins and minerals to suit older guinea pigs’ needs. Our mature nuggets are high in beneficial fibre – something guineas need in their diet - and help to prevent selective feeding, which is associated with numerous health issues.

“As the company behind Guinea Pig Awareness Week, and having launched the first Guinea Pig Welfare Forum earlier this year, we are committed to providing guinea pigs with the right nutrition and feeding plans to cater for every life stage through our Excel range, which is highly recommended by UK vets."

Burgess Excel Mature Guinea Pig is available in a 1.5kg pack (RRP £8.30) with packaging designed to complement the existing Excel range of guinea pig products. Any retailers interested in stocking the range may contact consumercare@burgesspetcare.co.uk.

The biggest issues for canine health and welfare

New research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has identified that research into behaviour, clinical practice, shelter welfare and breed-related diseases are amongst the highest research priorities for experts in canine health and welfare..

New research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has identified that research into behaviour, clinical practice, shelter welfare and breed-related diseases are amongst the highest research priorities for experts in canine health and welfare – highlighting the impact of human decisions on dogs’ lives. These future insights will support ongoing efforts to enhance dog welfare by helping to improve the research and funding process.

Conducting the study, the RVC convened almost 60 stakeholders in the canine health and welfare sector linked to animal charities, universities and other associated organisations, such as veterinary practices and The Kennel Club. Participants individually identified issues of concern regarding canine health and welfare and related research processes and infrastructure, and then collectively prioritised a list comprising 200 issues.

Of those issues ranking the highest priority, eight research categories were identified – many of which demonstrate the complexity of interrelated factors that impact both people and the welfare of dogs. These included issues relating to canine behaviour, ownership, societal factors, breeding and supply, breed-related diseases, importation, clinical practice and shelter welfare. In identifying these topics, the participants also prioritised research areas designed to have the greatest impact, with a strong focus on matters that investigate the human factors in canine welfare.

Additional findings included:

  • The top three ‘relatively underfunded issues’ were increasing the supply of healthy well-bred dogs, dog bite attacks and the impact of human lifestyle on canine behaviour. Additional issues also identified as ‘relatively underfunded’ included common chronic medical disorders of dogs such as, patellar luxation, overgrown nails, otitis externa, periodontal disease and anal sac problems - making them high priorities for increased future research funding.
  • Research topics identified as previously ‘most underfunded’ all concerned real-world canine welfare issues, particularly emphasising the breeding and supply of dogs.
  • Animal-directed funders, such as animal charities, provided most or all the past research funding (2012-22) for six of the eight highest-priority research topic categories.
  • Participants recommended improving transparency of the funding processes and increasing collaboration between stakeholder groups throughout the funding sector.

The RVC team leading the research comprised Dr Alison Skipper, Postdoctoral Researcher in Canine Research Funding; Dr Rowena Packer, Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science; and Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor of Companion Animal Epidemiology. Taking these findings, the team analysed and compared the data with past research funding, developing guidelines for future research priorities and suggesting ways to improve research funding processes. This will help future research funding to be allocated more effectively, maximising its value for improving canine lives by investigating the highest priority issues that affect dogs and their caregivers today.

Dr Alison Skipper, previously Researcher in Canine Health Research at the RVC and lead author of the paper, said: “This new study reveals the top priorities for future research in canine health and welfare, which are mostly concerned with investigating real-world problems with the human-canine relationship, such as the impact of poor breeding practices and poor understanding of dogs’ needs. We hope this research can help funders and researchers to develop future research projects that will make a real difference to canine lives.”

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC and co-author of the paper, said: “This new study from the RVC offers a wake-up call for researchers and funders to focus more on what matters most to dogs and humans at a population level. Commonplace disorders affecting ears, teeth, anal sacs and nails blight the lives of huge proportions of dogs but are shown here to be woefully underfunded and under-researched. Researchers and funders now have the evidence that should shape the next decade of funded research for dogs.”

Simona Zito, Grants and Programmes Manager at Battersea, said: “At Battersea we are committed to exploring societal issues and deepening our understanding of the vital human-canine relationship and we are proud to have contributed to this important work by the RVC, which provides valuable insights into our sector. The findings highlight key thematic priorities in research, along with the structural reforms necessary to improve future funding processes, all of which will ultimately help the sector and its shared mission to improve animal health and welfare.”

Jennifer Millard, Chair of The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, said: “This project, supported by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, provides vital insights into the gaps and priorities for the future in our sector. We remain dedicated to supporting research which makes a real difference to dog health and welfare and look forward to continuing to work with others to tackle some of the most pressing issues outlined and create better outcomes for both dogs and those who care for them.”

This study was commissioned and jointly funded by Battersea, Dogs Trust, The Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT), and the Waltham Foundation.

The decision to move PATS 2025 to the NEC in Birmingham has delighted UK pet companies eager to showcase their new products to a wider audience.

PATS – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – will take place in Hall 1 of the NEC from Sunday 28th September to Tuesday 30th September 2025 and will be able to accommodate up to 400 UK and international exhibitors.

Pedigree Wholesale is one company that has supported PATS exhibitions over the years and is looking forward to the new venue. The company’s head of buying Melanie Malin said: “We’re thrilled that PATS will be held at the NEC in 2025 – a positive move that gives us the perfect opportunity to showcase the very best of Pedigree Wholesale. This central, larger-scale event allows us to present our own brand and wholesale offerings to a broader audience while creating more opportunities for our buying team to connect with existing suppliers and explore innovative new products. We look forward to welcoming more customers over the three days and making the most of this exciting event.”

Ancol Pet Products is another major company welcoming the new plans. Director Simon Lane commented: “We are very much looking forward to the move to the NEC in 2025 and have decided to invest in a new stand design for the show. With the extra space that PATS now offers we will be able to showcase more of our excellent range in 2025. It’s going to be an exciting show, with more exhibitors and more visitors.”

Danish Design’s director of sales and operations Rob Newsome said: “We are very much looking forward to another three-day PATS show in its new location. We believe the extra day in 2024 made the show even more successful for exhibitors and visitors alike. With the added benefit of such a central location along with the best transport links, we are extremely positive about what we can achieve at the NEC.”

It's a similar story for Petlife International, whose director James Hancock said: “We have always considered PATS to be a focal point in our calendar – the show gives us a unique opportunity to speak with clients old and new, and to showcase both existing and new lines to a wide audience. We firmly believe that moving across to the NEC in 2025 will prove to be a great step for exhibitors and visitors alike, and we can’t wait to be a part of it.”

Many exhibitors are taking advantage of the extra space available in Hall 1 at the NEC to increase the size of their stands.

Scruffs is one company seizing on the opportunity to expand its presence at the show. Owner Dubby Klyne said: “We’re delighted to see PATS move to the NEC from 2025 as it will mean far more accessibility for both UK and International visitors. On this basis we have taken the decision to increase our stand space at PATS 2025 in order to showcase our brand and ranges in a similar manner to the larger international shows we exhibit at around the world.”

Windsor Food Machinery will be taking a stand three times bigger than before, with director Karen Stuart stating: “The NEC Birmingham is ideally located in the centre of the UK, and has great transportation links, so as a result we have decided to significantly increase the size our stand. We’re very much looking forward to exhibiting at PATS 2025 and believe it will be a huge success for the organisers and all its exhibitors.”

Pet Trade Innovations booked its stand early and managing director Steve Driver said: “We have taken more space this year as we think the event will be bigger than ever. The central location will make it easier for both UK and overseas visitors to attend. It’s great to see this great British show growing internationally.”

And William Wong, category manager at Company of Animals, added: “We're thrilled to announce that we've secured a prime spot with a larger stand, which will help us make an even bigger impact with our new product displays. Our team has been working incredibly hard to bring these innovations to life, and we can't wait to see you all at Birmingham.''

PATS 2025 will retain all its popular features:

Dr Veneta appoints a new Sales Manager

Freeze dried pet food brand Dr Veneta has appointed a new Sales Manager to help fulfil its ambitious plans for growth in the new year...

Up and coming freeze dried pet food brand Dr Veneta has appointed a new Sales Manager to help fulfil its ambitious plans for growth in the new year.

Created by leading veterinary surgeon and nutritionist Dr Veneta Kozhuharova, who is Director of Associated Veterinary Services based in Rainham in Kent, the brand made its trade debut at PATS, receiving a huge amount of interest from retailers and wholesalers alike.

Jackie Waters, who lives in Calderbridge in the Lake District, joins Dr Veneta from a market leader in the veterinary pet food sector. Having worked in the pet food industry for over 10 years, Jackie trained in a variety of roles including pet nutrition which eventually led to her role as a key account manager to the veterinary sector with her previous company. As a proud owner of two rescue dogs, Jackie will be bringing her love of dogs and veterinary expertise to her new role.

As the new Sales Manager, Jackie will be talking to prospective new clients, will be handling the customer services for existing clients and will be looking to open doors for the Dr Veneta brand in the veterinary and holistic markets where there is a great deal of potential for the brand.

Jackie said,: “I am really excited to be starting this new role with Dr Veneta, To be promoting a new brand in a growing area of the dog food market is both challenging and rewarding. I am particularly looking forward to meeting new customers and spreading the freeze dried message amongst stockists and dog owners.”

Through Dr Veneta Kozhuharova’s work as a nutritionist as well as being a vet, and approving recipes for export to different countries, she became inspired to create her own range of dog food.  Dr Veneta Freeze-dried food is the latest phenomenon in the pet food market. It marries the convenience of a traditional kibble with the nutritional value of a raw diet.

The intricate freeze-drying process safeguards both the nutritional structure and shelf life of the products to create a far-reaching range that supports the ongoing health and wellbeing of your dogs whilst providing them with essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It is also convenient and easy to use, highly digestible, grain free, is a complete meal, uses human-grade natural ingredients such as raw meat and vegetables and is high in protein. The food is suitable for all sizes and breeds of dogs from 6 months of age. The kibbles themselves also make excellent dog training treats.

Dr Veneta has created a food that does not just support the wellbeing of dogs, but also their microbiome which is responsible for so many physiological functions that happen in dogs’ bodies and where 84% of the all-important immune system resides. Each recipe has been designed to tackle ailments seen in an everyday veterinary practice – elderly dogs, anxiety, joint problems, poor digestion and skin irritations. In addition to herbs and superfoods, a “hero” ingredient, Nutritional Yeast which is fermented and gluten free and very palatable to dogs has been added to support and feed a dog’s microbiome. All meat proteins, vegetables and fruits are British and locally sourced supporting local communities.

The diet is also extremely good for maintaining a dog’s weight.

The food can be used as an alternative to the raw food diet, a complete meal, as a dog treat and as a topper making it the go to stable for any pet food store cupboard.

The potential of this range was rewarded at PATS with a number of excellent stockists placing orders to sell the range.

Dr Veneta is available in five varieties: STAY MOBILE (Chicken Swede & Blueberry) STAY CALM (Turkey, Pear & Apple) STAY SHINY (Turkey, Salmon, Carrot & Blueberry) STAY WELL (Chicken & Rabbit, Apple & Pumpkin) & STAY YOUNG (Pork, Pumpkin & Pear).

Dr Veneta made the finals of the PETQUIP Awards this year and her veterinary practice sponsored the PIF Awards.
