HayPigs! celebrates 'remarkable' 7th anniversary

As award-winning small animal specialist brand HayPigs! celebrates its 7th anniversary, founder Rik Cridland admits it has been ‘bloody hard’ running the business during such turbulent times.

As award-winning small animal specialist brand HayPigs! celebrates its 7th anniversary, founder Rik Cridland admits it has been ‘bloody hard’ running the business during such turbulent times.

And he has this advice to fellow business owners: “For anyone having a tough time right now, stay strong and remember why you started it.”

Rik, who started HayPigs! with wife Helen seven years ago, said: “In all honesty, it’s an achievement that we are even still in existence! We like to call our niche a ‘niche niche’.

“Running a business is bloody hard at the best of times, but when you’re constantly fighting the status quo and championing a completely different way of going about things, you’ve got to be prepared to be in it for the long haul! In truth, the only reason we are still in business, is because we care deeply about the community we serve and our purpose. We adore guinea pigs (and all animals in fact) and strive, every day, to change attitudes towards their welfare and enrichment. When we’ve had our shins kicked from underneath us (metaphorically speaking), we’ve been strong enough to regroup and start again. This has not come without massive sacrifice.

“Would I recommend starting your own business? I guess if you’ve got that itch to scratch, it’s very difficult for me to say “Don’t do it!”. But, rest assured, if you make the commitment to start, you will create something that will feel impossible to let go of, will consume a huge portion of your time and energy and will be both your ikigai and your tormentor.”

Rik added: “At HayPigs! we have achieved some incredible things, but we’ve done it with the leanest team imaginable! Not everyone knows or appreciates the fact that my wife and co-founder, Helen, is only in the business 2 days a week. For the rest of the time, she is a full-time mum, a dance teacher, and my mental crutch (she’s pretty amazing really!). Or that for the first 3 years of trading, we did HayPigs! part-time (a pet project if you will!). Not everyone knows that we also took over the running of Guinea Pig Magazine 4 years ago saving it from the brink and manage to juggle these two businesses alongside commitments to our two kids, dog and 8 guinea pigs! It’s pretty exhausting at times!

“Some mornings I wake up and wonder if I’ve still got the energy to stick at this, but then I see some social media post and it’s a guinea pig (and it’s human) enjoying something we have created and I’m re-energised. Today, I can’t quite believe it’s only been 7 years; it feels like 20! But I don’t think we’re done just yet. Enriching the lives of small furries (and their humans) every day, is what we are proud to do and will continue doing as long as we have the energy and strength to do so. While we have the love and support that we have right now, I can’t see this being a problem.

“For anyone having a tough time with their businesses right now, stay strong and remember why you started it. I find peace in the fact that we have already succeeded because we started and have given it everything. We’ve had some tough times and have failed more times than I can remember, but we’ve learnt so much along the way and are stronger for it.”

On-line pet food suppliers found to be selling illegal products

Home-based online pet food suppliers are being reminded of the importance of ensuring that the products that they sell are legal after 10 were found to be selling products that were not legally compliant with product labelling requirements...

Home-based online pet food suppliers are being reminded of the importance of ensuring that the products that they sell are legal after 10 were found to be selling products that were not legally compliant with product labelling requirements.

The Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service carried out test purchases across Somerset and Devon (including Plymouth and Torbay).

Four of the businesses looked at are based in Somerset and six in Devon operating from home and selling through social media platforms and marketplaces, and on their own websites.

All 10 businesses failed strict labelling requirements. Officers tested dog treats and a canine supplements and in each case the product was incorrectly labelled.

In each case the business had not produced the pet food themselves; eight were repackaged products produced by other businesses and in two cases the products had been manufactured for them by another business.

The suppliers have been given guidance on how to ensure that the products that they sell are within the law.

The test purchases were carried out in response to concerns about the proliferation of small-scale feed business operators setting up online.

These types of small business are often not registered with Trading Standards, or if using products of animal origin, with he Animal and Plant Health Agency.

As a direct result of the test purchase and sampling exercise, five of the businesses are now registered for feed hygiene and two are purely retailing and have no requirement to register, and two will soon register.

Naomi Osborne, the service’s lead officer for Agriculture, said: “Many of these businesses set up during or after the pandemic, and we were concerned that there was a lack of awareness of the requirements and legal obligations relevant to this type of operation.

“We were particularly concerned that labelling claims, such as the product being ‘home-made’, or ‘free-from’, or ‘natural’ etc, could not be substantiated.

“It’s vital that businesses adhere to the strict regulations and that’s what we are here for, to advise and support and where needed, to intervene.

“As a service we receive many requests for advice each year on the requirements for selling homemade pet treats and feeds.

“We would initially direct them to the free business advice guides on our website and provide them with information about our paid for services and pet food pack.”

Veterinary receptionist named Vetpol’s CPD Champion

Stacey Godbold, a registered veterinary receptionist from Paddons Vets in Wisbech, was named Vetpol’s CPD Champion of 2023 at the first-ever Vetpol Congress on Tuesday...

Stacey Godbold, a registered veterinary receptionist from Paddons Vets in Wisbech, was named Vetpol’s CPD Champion of 2023 at the first-ever Vetpol Congress on Tuesday.

The Congress, which took place in Solihull, consisted of an informative day of lectures followed by a party and awards evening, where Stacey was recognised for her commitment to CPD, exceeding her requirement by the largest margin of all SQPs on the Vetpol register.

While nearly 50% of all Vetpol SQPs exceeded their CPD targets last year, none did so by as large a margin as Stacey. With a CPD requirement of three hours, Stacey completed more than 13 times her target and undertook 40.75 hours.

Caroline Johnson, Director at Vetpol, spoke of Stacey’s achievements: “Her commitment to learning and CPD is truly inspiring. To have exceeded her quota by such a fantastic margin is something to be truly proud of, and perfectly exemplifies the high standards that we strive for within the SQP community and it is great to see Stacey clearly enjoying what she is learning. Having the opportunity to share this achievement with delegates at our recent Congress and see all of the hard work celebrated was a fantastic experience for myself and the rest of the Vetpol team.”

Being the first SQP Congress in the UK, Vetpol worked hard to make the event memorable and enjoyable for all involved. Lisa Giddings, Professional Development Lead at Vetpol, talked more about Congress, saying, “It was a delight to be involved in Congress planning. Everyone on the team worked so hard to make the day a success, and it was a lovely chance to meet lots of new and familiar faces, and celebrate the successes of SQPs.” Stacey wasn’t the only SQP recognised for their achievements at Congress. Vetpol also awarded three ‘SQP Ambassador’ awards to Jason Chadwick, Jordan Perkins and Paul Cartledge to appreciate their outstanding efforts to continued SQP excellence.

Lisa continued, “I am looking forward to many more events like this in the years to come and having the opportunity to celebrate the ongoing achievements of Vetpol, network, and generally commend all of our SQPs for their ongoing commitment to personal and professional development.”

Karnlea range doubles in size in first quarter of 2024

Karnlea’s range of bone broths and complimentary supplements has more than doubled during the first quarter of 2024...

Karnlea’s range of bone broths and complimentary supplements has more than doubled during the first quarter of 2024.

Whole Goat Milk Powder is the most recent addition - joining Pumpkin and Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root powders as part of the new Karnlea Complimentary range. These can be added to any Karnlea Bone Broth variety, primary food, or administered separately to address specific health issues in dogs and cats.

Goat’s milk – a powerhouse of protein, healthy fats and minerals – is considered ideal for pets as it has smaller fat globules than cow’s milk, making it easier for them to digest. It provides a nutritional boost, can help settle stomachs and provide extra hydration. Pets love it as it slightly sweeter taste.

This can be used separately to, or alongside Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root Powder (used to heal and soothe the gut and offers prebiotic benefits), and Pumpkin Powder, which is a great prebiotic fibre, rich in vitamins C, A, B2, E, and iron, manganese and beta carotenes. Pumpkin helps treat diarrhoea, regulate digestion and anal gland health.

Pumpkin Powder comes in tubs of 100g and 200g (trade only), Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root, 100g and Whole Goat Milk Powder, 200g.

The supplement range has a recommended retail price starting at £12.99.

A fourth flavour has also been added to the Karnlea’s Bone Broth range. Fish Bone Broth is slow-cooked and made from sustainably caught white fish (cod and haddock) which is free from hormones, antibiotics and additives. As with all of Karnlea’s bone broths, it is made with naturally filtered water and a little apple cider vinegar, used to leach the goodness from the bones and which cooks off in the production.

Fish Bone Broth is beneficial for good digestion and immune system. It is ideal for pets with leaky gut syndrome, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome as gelatine and collagen can help heal the gut and reduce inflammation.

Fish is an ideal protein which is gentle on the stomach. It can also be used to support healthy joints, skin/coat and liver health. It is a great source of collagen, contains natural glucosamine, chondroitin and the amino acid, glycine. Karnlea’s liquid broth is carton packed from fresh and can be stored in a cupboard until opened. Containing 500ml, Fish Bone Broth sells at an RRP of £10.99.

Everything in the range is suitable for dogs and cats of all ages and sizes, and every feeding type. It adds value to all  and is a great way to build a healthy bowl.

Said Karnlea founder Lara McCullough: “We felt that fish was a welcome addition to our Bone Broth range. Marine collagen is different from that extracted from meat bones. It has smaller particles and can be absorbed quicker. It is a light protein with hypoallergenic qualities, so suitable for dogs and cats with skin and coat issues, and delicate digestive systems.

“Alongside this, we have introduced the Karnlea Complimentary range because we appreciate that many pet owners are trying to address specific health issues that may be age or breed specific. These supplements can be used independently, mixed with our bone broth or added to main meals. Rather than introduce endless variants of bone broth with added supplements, we want to give customers the chance to make an active choice to use the most appropriate ingredient at any given time or for a specific pet.”

Pet store hosts 'stuff-a-thon in aid of dog shelters

A Southampton pet food retailer has hosted its very first ‘stuff-a-thon’ event in collaboration with dog toy brand KONG in aid of local dog shelters.

Healthy Pet Store in Totton welcomed families to the store to ‘Stuff a KONG’ with dog-friendly fillings to be frozen and donated to hounds across the region.

Members of the Healthy Pet Store team helped volunteers fill the enrichment toys with fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, fish and dog treats for sheltered dogs to enjoy.

The KONGs were donated to St Francis Animal Shelter, Second Chance Animal Rescue, the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Southampton and the RSPCA Stubbington Ark.

The in-store event was held in recognition of KONG Day 2024 - a yearly celebration of the much-loved ultra-durable dog toy brand.

Managing director Deborah Burrows said she was delighted to see so many visitors, especially children, willing to lend their time and efforts for a good cause.

“I’m so pleased to see so many of our visitors rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into stuffing the KONGs,” she said. “These toys provide dogs with plenty of stimulation which can help to reduce stress and support overall wellbeing.”

Katie O’Blatch at St Francis Animal Shelter said: “A lot of our sheltered dogs experience stress as they settle into their new environment, so enrichment toys are really important for keeping them occupied and helping them adapt.

“I’d like to say thank you to everyone who helped prepare this wonderful donation - we’re hugely grateful.”

Johnson's bolsters balm range with two new products

Johnson’s Veterinary Products has added to its extensive health and wellbeing range with the introduction of two new balms aimed at dogs, cats and small animals...

Johnson’s Veterinary Products has added to its extensive health and wellbeing range with the introduction of two new balms aimed at dogs, cats and small animals.

The new products, an Antiseptic Balm and a Soothing Skin Balm for dogs, cats and small animals, expand on the success of Johnson’s existing Paw & Nose Balm for dogs, which launched last year, creating a trio of all natural and vegan friendly balms, that deliver a wide range of important healthcare benefits from soothing irritated skin to treating minor cuts and abrasions.

Used for calming insect bites and maintaining healthy skin, the Soothing Skin Balm benefits from a range of natural ingredients and anti-bacterial properties, making it a suitable choice for dogs, cats and small animals over 12 weeks old.

Meanwhile, the Antiseptic Balm is infused with English lavender and lemon blossom, giving it a wonderfully fresh scent that ensures beloved pets receive the pampered treatment they deserve.

Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s Veterinary Products, commented:

“As we enter into Spring and welcome the arrival of warmer weather, there will undoubtedly be more opportunities for our four-legged friends to venture outdoors and explore, whether that be through walks over the park or nosing around the garden. Unfortunately, there will also be an increased chance of insects and bugs latching onto their fur, which can lead to skin irritation via bites and scratches.

“With this in mind, owners must exercise caution when caring for their pets, ensuring steps are taken to protect their skin from irritation and possible infection. Fortunately, these three balms will guarantee that pets are properly protected from any would-be pests, whilst maintaining healthy skin and fur throughout the Spring and Summer months.

“We received such positive feedback following on from the launch of the Paw & Nose Balm in 2023, and certainly recognised there was a customer want and need for wellbeing products that are natural, gentle and kind, smell and look great, and importantly, are affordable.

“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to place strain on people, we understand that the concept of pampering pets might be taking a back seat for many. But this trio of products offer an indulgent feel at a cost -effective price point, making it easier for pet owners to offer their pets a little bit of luxury whilst effectively soothing any discomfort or irritation they might incur.”

The branding on the new balms sees the business’ stylish retro design being bought back to the fore, drawing on Johnson’s rich heritage to appeal to its loyal customer base.

“This is one of many exciting product releases we have planned for this year, so we encourage owners to keep their eyes peeled for more news and updates in the coming months.”

Founded in 1921, Johnson’s is one of the UK’s leading, independent manufacturers of pet healthcare products, from flea and worm treatments to shampoos and treats, all available through high street pet shops and pet stores across the UK. The family-owned business prides itself on innovation in order to meet the evolving needs of the nation’s pet owning community, whilst retaining an affordability for all.

Pedigree Wholesale has just launched the all-new wild bird mixed seed reformulation from Walter Harrison’s. The upgrade is to its Ultimate Energy No Mess, which is now Ultimate Energy No Grow. The reformulated seed mix is 100% husk-free, 100% edible, 100% weed-free and 100% filler-free, and is available exclusively to the specialist pet trade.

WEED-FREE GARDENS

Previously the Ultimate Energy No Mess, the NEW Ultimate Energy No Grow range, available in 2kg and 12.75kg bags, is an improved seed mix that no longer contains ingredients that grow in gardens. Linseed, a seed which grows once fallen on the ground, has been removed to ensure the natural, high quality seed mix is now mess-free AND weed-free!

IMPROVED BLEND

The newly reformulated Ultimate Energy No Grow also contains a richer blend of seeds at the same trade price and RRP! The seed mix now contains more sunflower hearts, more Mealworms, and more nutritious suet than the original Ultimate Energy No Mess. The team listened to and applied customer feedback: Fragrant Aniseed Oil has replaced Soya Oil as a fragrant, glossy coating to attract wild birds and keep them returning to gardens to feed. Birds love the smell and taste of Aniseed Oil!

NO FILLERS

Ultimate Energy No Grow stands out from its competitors with high-quality ingredients and zero fillers. The recipe does not contain wheat or oats, which are considered ingredients that birds do not feed on and dilute the overall quality of seed mixes.

USAGE & TIPS

The seed mix attracts a variety of birds to the garden all year round, providing essential energy throughout all seasons. Expect a variety of Tits, Greenfinches, Dunnocks, Robins, Sparrows, Thrushes and Blackbirds to flutter by and come back for more! Extremely versatile, the premium mix can be fed from a seed feeder, bird table or on the ground.

These two new lines are now available to order exclusively from Pedigree Wholesale. The product codes will directly replace the Ultimate Energy No Mess lines to quicken the transition into the market.

Petpals’ manager to run marathon for Cats Protection

The Petpals team at head office and franchisees throughout the network are rallying behind franchise support manager Tracey Dawber as she tackles this year’s London Marathon...

The Petpals team at head office and franchisees throughout the network are rallying behind franchise support manager Tracey Dawber as she tackles this year’s London Marathon.

Tracey’s participation in the marathon is not only a personal challenge but also a heartfelt initiative in support of Cats Protection – a cause close to the heart of the Petpals brand.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be lacing up my running shoes to support such a worthy cause,” said Tracey. “If you’re wondering where you can find me, I’ll be running around my local country lanes in Andover – supported by my husband and daughter, who will be cycling and rollerblading alongside me, cheering me on as I gear up for the big day. It’s been tough, but knowing I have my family and the entire Petpals network behind me makes me focused on pushing closer to my goal and the chance to make a meaningful difference to Cats Protection.”

Cats Protection not only rehomes abandoned cats but also advocates for cats by campaigning for change across the UK. It offers education in the form of free talks, lesson plans, information packs and interactive activities. Recently, it launched a free and confidential fostering service for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse so they can rest assured their cat will be taken care of until they can be safely reunited.

This is not the first time Tracey has pushed herself to her limits for a good cause. In 2023, she participated in the London Marathon for the first time and raised £2,000 for Dogs Trust. This year, she hopes to achieve a similar feat for Cats Protection and has already managed to raise more than 70 per cent of her target.

“When I announced I was taking part again this year, everyone thought I was mad!” explained Tracey. “But the tireless commitment to the welfare of our feline friends at Cats Protection resonated with me and the Petpals team so much that I knew I had to take part again. They often get overlooked in favour of more socially popular charities, so they especially need our help. I’m so grateful for all the support and donations I’ve received, and I’m determined to make everyone proud – including our much-loved feline companions!”

Tracey’s participation in the London Marathon is just one example of the many initiatives undertaken by members of the Petpals network to ensure they uphold the brand’s commitment to pet care and welfare.

“At Petpals, we see first-hand the incredible bond between pets and their owners,” says Kevin Thackrah, Director of Petpals. “It’s a relationship built on love, trust and loyalty – something that we’re passionate about preserving through our pet-preferred pet care services. That’s why so many in our network go out of their way to support initiatives that align with these values.

“Tracey’s passion for pets and commitment to their wellbeing are true reflections of what our brand stands for. We believe that pets deserve the best possible care, and Tracey’s participation in yet another London Marathon is a testament to that commitment. Good luck, Tracey!”

RSPCA calls for 'rethink' of relationship with animals

The RSPCA says we need to “radically rethink” our relationship with all animals as it launches its new For Every Kind campaign to mark its 200th year...

The RSPCA says we need to “radically rethink” our relationship with all animals as it launches its new For Every Kind campaign to mark its 200th year.

The charity reveals new polling by Savanta which shows a stark difference in the way we see animals, depending on whether they are in our homes, in labs, on farms or in the wild and says we have become disconnected to many of the animals around us.

Polling of more than 2,500 UK adults reveals 90% of people think dogs can experience positive emotions like happiness but only 34% think rats can and just 42% think chickens can. But in reality, both experience lives rich in emotions - rats love to play and even giggle when tickled, and chickens can count and some show empathy for their flock mates.

People were also more likely to think pets deserved a ‘happy and healthy life’ compared to animals used in science - with nearly nine in ten believing a pet rabbit deserved such a life, compared to just under seven in ten thinking it mattered for a rabbit in a laboratory.

Just one in 20 thought dogs don’t deserve happy, healthy lives, which rises to one in four for rats in labs and one in five for foxes living in the city.

Today the RSPCA is now launching a new campaign For Every Kind, urging people to care about the lives of every animal and carry out one million acts of kindness for animals to mark its 200th anniversary.

Chris Sherwood, Chief Executive of the RSPCA, said: “We are devoted to our cats and dogs, but we often don’t realise we are connected to billions of other animals in our lives, through the things we buy and the choices we make. All animals are amazing, but sadly we’ve come to see many creatures as commodities and we value their lives differently because of it.

“As a society, we love our native birds, but turn a blind eye to the suffering of billions of meat chickens; we love the hedgehogs who visit our garden, but treat rats and foxes as pests. We need to realise that all animals have feelings and emotions, many can feel joy, anger, fear, and more, and whether they are pets, wildlife, on farms or in labs, they deserve to have a fulfilled life of their own.”

The survey also revealed people are more likely to see a dog as a ‘friend’ (75%), and are more likely to see pigs or rats as ‘useful’, possibly due to being found on farms or in labs. The majority of people saw foxes, who are often seen as vermin, as a ‘threat’ or ‘pointless’, suggesting they don’t recognise their right to a good life.

Chris continued: “All animals deserve our kindness and respect and the first step to changing the way we treat animals is changing how we see and feel about them. Which is why we are launching our For Every Kind campaign to mark our 200th year. A world that is better for animals, is better for us all.”

The For Every Kind campaign is launching with a new brand for the RSPCA - for the first time in 50 years - and a new advert which sees singing animals performing Aretha Franklin’s iconic hit to call for Respect.

Celebrities including RSPCA President and conservationist Chris Packham and RSPCA ambassadors champion ballroom dancer and TV judge Shirley Ballas, actor Brian Blessed, JLS singer and TV presenter JB Gill, and TV personality Pete Wicks, are all supporting the campaign and lending their voices to the warbling creatures.

EzyDog’s world-class engineering, premium materials, global distribution and design-led product collections are what sets the company apart from the competition. It is dedicated to offering solution-based products that strengthen the bond between dogs and their owners. As the company gained popularity because of its emphasis on durability, functionality, and comfort in its products, EzyDog quickly expanded its product line to cater to a wide range of dog activities, including hiking, running, swimming, and everyday walks.

The Zero Shock lead is still an important part of the EzyDog range, offering dog walkers a highly sprung bungee element that absorbs any sudden shocks made by a dog. This technology transfers perfectly for runners. Designed to be worn as a running belt or around the shoulder, the Road Runner is a hands-free dog lead that relieves pressure on your runs, or walks. Or there is the Handy Leash, worn like a glove over the thumb, it acts like a hands-free dog lead that doesn't need to be held!  Of course, all EzyDog leads are available in a huge range of colours and some premium finishes like denim and corduroy.

Another of EzyDog's early innovative products was the original Chest Plate Harness. Safer and more comfortable than collars, harnesses are now considered an essential part of dog ownership. EzyDog now offers wide range of harness such as the Express, X-Link and even a crash certified car harness, the DRIVE, for total safety on the road.

Finally, a staple that all dogs have, the collar. EzyDog was the first to introduce padded, neoprene-lined collars that were both stylish, comfortable, and practical. The collars range now includes the Double Up for added safety, the Check Mate for training and traditional leather range, the Oxford. Dogs can be on-trend with any of these collars which come in a variety of sizes and colours to suit all tastes.

Nowadays however, dogs don’t just have collars and leads. EzyDog also offers life jackets, coats, sun protection vests and seat belts, as well as other accessories owners might want, such as backpacks – for the dog, not owner! – travel treat bags and collar lights.

If there’s any product that owners want for their dogs, EzyDog has it, and it’ll come with the extra reassurance that all its accessories are made with the welfare of the dog at the forefront of the design, so they’re safe and comfortable when with EzyDog.

Huge response to Royal Canin Vet Symposium

The 2024 edition of the Vet Symposium, held in Montpellier on April 9th & 10th, gathered over 550 guests at the Corum Congress Hall from around 64 countries from around the world.

Attendees included veterinarians, veterinary nurses and technicians, partners such as Boehringer Ingelheim, MSD, VETgirl, VetSource, Wisdom Panel, and Mars & Royal Canin teams. Two days marked by conferences dedicated to showcasing the best practices for kittens and puppies, exploring why focusing on the start of life today is a real opportunity for tomorrow, sharing tips on how to build a vet career, and strengthening the relationship between vets and pet owners.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THEIR FIRST PAW STEPS

The pet ecosystem's expertise and knowledge around nutrition, prevention, and diagnostics of illness is continuously growing. How, as pet health guardians, can we leverage that knowledge to better influence some aspects of the start of life, and anticipate later outcomes? The Royal Canin 2024 annual Vet Symposium was the opportunity for all attendees to learn from the experience of worldwide pet experts to explore the opportunities of a healthy start of life for different stakeholders: pets, pet owners, veterinary professionals, and clinic leaders.

With outstanding talks and keynotes, the attendees had the opportunity to dig into neonatal examination, growth curves charts, the importance in understanding and connecting with Gen Z pet owners, learnings from human pediatrics - such as practical advice on management -, standardization of care, and more.

Renowned international experts participated in these discussions and shared their experience in building strong life-long relationships with pets and pet owners alike. Among the invited speakers were Samah Karaki, Neuroscientist, author and founding director of The Social Brain Institute; Alex German, Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Liverpool, UK, and expert in pet obesity; Liv. Oginska, Veterinary Surgeon and Emotional Intelligence Expert at Human-Savvy; and Nefertiti Greene, President, Science & Diagnostics, Mars Petcare.

Cécile Coutens, Global Royal Canin President, and Olivier Reymond, Royal Canin Pet Professionals & Corporate Affairs Vice-President, hosted some keynotes, and took the opportunity to preview the launch of the first Royal Canin Neonatal and Pediatric handbook for cats and dogs.

NEONATAL AND PEDIATRIC CARE GUIDE FOR CATS AND DOGS

Co-written by 25 world-renowned experts, this one-of-a-kind handbook synthesizes the key questions veterinary teams are most likely to encounter in their daily practice on the pediatric topic. A collaborative approach with specialists from all around the world, this book offers a comprehensive guide along every stage of early life: from how to prepare for and manage parturition to neonatology, weaning and growth, or frequently encountered diseases. As we know today, “developmental origins of health and disease” also exist for cats and dogs, which means that the start of life is a critical moment for preventing chronic diseases later in life.

“I want to thank the authors of this handbook for sharing their invaluable expertise. I am delighted and proud to unveil this collective effort, which would not have been possible without the steadfast commitment and expertise of all authors, whether they are experts from the company, or partners with whom we are fortunate enough to work with. The handbook aims at providing vets with tools such as cutting-edge pediatric know-hows, as well as advice on creating a strong bond with pet owners. These are keys to guaranteeing optimum health throughout life, from the very start. It is an important topic, and an incredible step in the right direction for the health and wellbeing of cats and dogs,” said Cécile Coutens.

True to its principles of Mutuality and Responsibility, ROYAL CANIN a global reference in Health Through Nutrition for cats and dogs, has at heart to share knowledge and insightful information. This 2024 Vet Symposium was the opportunity to gather stakeholders, especially veterinarians, vet nurses and technicians, whose subsequent work on cats and dogs, and especially during the critical stage of the start of life, is key to achieve together our Purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS.

RVC celebrates 20 years of life-saving blood donations

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is celebrating 20 years of its life-saving blood donation programme provided at its North Mymms Hawkshead campus – which has supported thousands of cats and dogs over the years...

The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) is celebrating 20 years of its life-saving blood donation programme provided at its North Mymms Hawkshead campus – which has supported thousands of cats and dogs over the years.

To mark the special occasion and provide more pets with this vital service, the RVC’s charity, The Animal Care Trust (ACT), has launched an appeal to raise £150,000 towards new facilities.

Established in 2004, the RVC’s blood donor programme is the first and only veterinary hospital in the UK with a dedicated transfusion medicine service. It is also the only organisation in the UK that stores feline blood products. Since the first donor cohort of just 19 dogs twenty years ago, the programme currently benefits from 150 dogs and 62 cats who regularly donate their blood to others being treated at the RVC’s Small Animal Referral Hospital.

As well as organising a reliable supply of blood products to its Small Animal Referral Hospital, the RVC has also pioneered the development of transfusion medicine in cats and dogs carrying out research into the welfare of donors, how to store cat blood and amazingly, using dog blood to help cats.

This was the case for Millie, a six-month-old kitten who was brought into the RVC with acute anaemia and hypoglycaemia, and Feline Infectious Peritonitis. While the condition is nearly always fatal without therapy, thanks to first donor Neville, a ginger tabby, and then an emergency xenotransfusion from Willow, a border collie, Millie made a full recovery. Neville’s owner, Nicole, said “The donor team were always fantastic with Neville. He always came home happy and full of treats. Knowing that his donation has helped save the lives of other cats makes me feel very proud.”

Similarly, Rocco a three-year-old Chihuahua, had been attacked by other dogs and suffered extensive soft tissue and skeletal damage including pelvic fractures, acute kidney injuries, bite wounds and needed to have a back leg amputated. Roco received several life-saving blood transfusions from donors Mabel, Murphy and Oliver. Owner Po said, “The families who bring their pets to give blood are amazing, we can’t thank them enough.”

With the service expanding over the years, the demand for cat and dog blood continues to grow. While fundraising efforts for the blood donor programme have taken place for several years, in its 20th year, the ACT is launching a special birthday appeal to raise £150,000 towards creating new facilities. This will not only improve the experience for donors but will also create separate dedicated areas for dogs and cats and give the team space for their own laboratory to process and store donated blood products.

Dan Chan, a local resident and the RVC’s Professor of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, said: "I've seen first-hand how blood donations help pets every single day and the ground-breaking clinical treatment and expert care that is provided at the hospital.

“Thanks to our special donors, blood transfusions have saved thousands of lives at the RVC over the last two decades and there are many more in need of help. Therefore, this appeal is essential in allowing us to expand and enhance our current facilities to ensure even more cats and dogs can be treated. Anything you donate will be hugely appreciated and help us to achieve this important goal.”

Supporters can share donations with the RVC by visiting www.rvc.ac.uk/act or calling 01707 666237.

As part of the appeal, the RVC will announce its cat and dog ‘winners’ of its ‘Blood Donor of the Year’ awards next month as well as celebrating those pets who have played an integral part in donating over the years, in celebration of World Blood Donor Day in June.

Halal certified pet food company set to hit UK market

Leeds-based entrepreneur Aihtsham Rashid is launching a new 100% Halal certified pet food company, starting with cat food, in order to tackle the lack of natural, high protein, GMO and preservative free options in the UK market...

Leeds-based entrepreneur Aihtsham Rashid is launching a new 100% Halal certified pet food company, starting with cat food, in order to tackle the lack of natural, high protein, GMO and preservative free options in the UK market.

Aihtsham struggled to find high-quality halal cat food for his cats, as many Muslim pet owners opt for Halal pet food as an extension of their own dietary practices and religious beliefs, particularly if their cat consumes food in their home.

He kickstarted Hurayra Halal Pet Food, after three months of connecting with over 80 UK-based manufacturers, he realised there was little interest and no guarantee against cross-contamination for a 100% halal product.

Out of options in the UK, Aihtsham travelled to a factory in Malaysia a country whose most professed religion is Islam, taking the production of Halal food and pet care very seriously.

The name Huryayra was chosen with respect to Abu Hurayrah (R.A), whose full name is Abu Hurayrah Abd al-Rahman ibn Sakhr al-Dawsi (R.A), who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Hurayra offers three delicious flavours - Tuna, Ocean Fish, Chicken and Chicken and Fish for kittens - each formulated with essential nutrients such as Vitamin A, D, and E, to support a healthy immune system and help protect against infection, along with minerals to keep their coat shiny and smooth.

To celebrate its launch, Hurayra Pet Foods is offering a free sample of cat food, along with a complimentary pet food bowl.

Aihtsham said: “After facing the frustration of finding quality Halal cat food for my own beloved cats, I was inspired to take action.

“This endeavour is not just about filling a gap in the market; it is fuelled by a passion to provide a solution, rooted in authenticity, ethics, and quality.

“Hurayra is more than a brand; it's a commitment to integrity and care for our pets and their well-being."

Millpledge Veterinary announces the launch of ocular lubricant Oculeze

Millpledge Veterinary, leading provider of veterinary pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and consumables, has announced the launch of ocular lubricant, Oculeze, the latest addition to its portfolio of products...

Millpledge Veterinary, leading provider of veterinary pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and consumables, has announced the launch of ocular lubricant, Oculeze, the latest addition to its portfolio of products.

Suitable for animals including but not limited to dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, Oculeze can help in the management of any condition where eye health is supported by providing additional moisture or lubrication.

Drying of the eyes may occur due to ocular anatomy, abnormalities of the tear film, during travel or because of age-related tear film changes. Brachycephalic pets now account for around one in five dogs in the UK, and along with any other animal with prominent eyes, they are at higher risk of ocular drying. The popularity of these breeds together with the diverse range of ‘at-risk’ pets underscores the need for effective solutions.

Oculeze is phosphate free, pH neutral and features an innovative combination of natural active ingredients: glycerine (0.8%), Aloe vera, chamomile and propolis extract. Propolis extract is rich in polyphenols which have been shown to support corneal health by multiple mechanisms of action including modulation of the tear film, as well as a reduction in inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress. The beneficial effects of propolis extract are combined with the lubricating and soothing properties of the other active ingredients.

Administering eye drops can be a challenge for pet owners. Oculeze, formulated with natural essential oils, lasts longer on the ocular surface thanks to a reduced evaporation rate compared with non-lipid lubricants.3 This prolonged action translates into fewer administrations, thereby helping to enhance compliance. In addition, the drops have a low eye surface contact angle, so they effectively disperse across the eye surface, together with a high surface tension to support lubrication and tear film stability.

Acknowledging the vital role of maintaining ocular lubrication for both vision and comfort, Meryl Lang, UK and EU Sales Manager at Millpledge Veterinary, said: “We recognise how crucial product availability and continuity of supply are in managing the discomfort associated with dry eyes and with this in mind, Oculeze is available direct from Millpledge.”

Oculeze can be used alongside veterinary prescribed treatments with no contraindications. The product is offered in two sizes - a compact 10 millilitre bottle, packaged to optimise shelf space and a pack of ten resealable 0.6 millilitre vials, suitable for short term use and travel. The 10ml bottle includes a filter, preserving sterility for up to three months after opening, minimising waste and helping ensure affordability.

Oculeze can be ordered here https://millpledge.com/shop/oculeze For more information contact Millpledge Veterinary, freephone 08000 11 22 88 or email  sales@millpledge.com

Growing dog food brand secures £900k funding

Fresh dog food brand Marleybones has secured £900,000 in seed funding to continue its fast-paced growth. The company was founded in 2020 by Josephine Rode Bager and Mikala Skov.

Fresh dog food brand Marleybones has secured £900,000 in seed funding to continue its fast-paced growth.

The seed funding was led by JamJar Investments, a venture capital firm set up by the founders of Innocent Drinks. It was also supported by Active Partners, the consumer investor behind Soho House, Rapha and KatKin.

Marleybones’ mission to redefine dog food has also been recognised by other participants in the round, including a group of renowned veterinarians from Animal Health Angels alongside tech unicorn founders, digital marketing experts and consumer specialists.

The fresh funds will be used to grow the Marleybones team, expand its online presence and broaden its retail footprint after its recent UK launches in Waitrose and Whole Foods Market. Since launching in 2020, Marleybones has grown annual sales to £1m via direct-to-consumer channels.

Founders Josephine Rode Bager and Mikala Skov launched the brand with a mission to “redefine dogfood”. Marleybones’ pantry fresh meals were inspired by the gap between quality and convenience that Josephine identified when feeding her own dog, Marley.

Josephine said: “Marleybones is driven by our founding mission of making dogs healthier and happier. This investment will allow us to continue delivering on that promise and caring for more dogs than ever before. Having seen the benefits on my own dog Marley, and the customers we’re lucky enough to serve, we’re excited about what this investment unlocks for our community.”

Mikala added: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have partnered with industry leaders in veterinary care and category-defining consumer brands. Their support and investment will help us take the next leap forward in making fresh dog food more accessible and further our mission of improving the lives of dogs.”

Richard Reed, founder of JamJar Investments and Innocent Drinks, said: “We are delighted to join forces with Marleybones at this exciting stage in their journey as a brand. Marleybones’ innovative approach to dog nutrition – pantry fresh® dog food – masterfully blends the superior quality of fresh ingredients with the ease of traditional dog food offerings.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting Mikala, Josephine, and their expanding team in introducing their nutritious and convenient dog food to an increasing group of dogs, pet parents and retailers over the coming months and years.”

Currently, only 2% of female founders in the UK receive VC funding, making Marleybones' accomplishment all the more remarkable. As a female-founded start-up, Marleybones is championing greater inclusivity and diversity within the entrepreneurial landscape.

Insect-based dog food brand stocked in Pets at Home

Innovative insect-based dog food brand Grub Club has announced its first national retailer listing with Pets at Home.

The leading pet retail chain will stock Grub Club's insect protein dog treat range – Poop Perfector, Sit Roll Treat Repeat, Canine Shine and Clean Teeth & Chill dental sticks in sizes small and large.

The range will be rolled out across 466 Pets at Home stores nationwide as well as the retailer’s online site.

After growing online revenues by 260% in 2023, Grub Club prides itself on its hypoallergenic, nutritionally-complete and super sustainable food for all dog breeds.

Along with a popular e-commerce shop and a loyal subscriber base, Grub Club is also available to shop in various independent stores, such as Daylesford Organic and Gladwells.

Grub Club is hypoallergenic, protein packed, insect-based complete dog food that takes care of your dog and the planet. The grubs used – Black Soldier Fly Larvae – are nature's perfect up-cyclers. They are farmed in biotech facilities and fed on a diet of organic plant-based matter. In an independent study, Grub Club's food was shown to reduce carbon emissions by up to 1.5 tonnes per dog per year. Which means if just 1% of the UK's 12 million dogs switched to Grub Club, we could save 180,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

After discovering our pets eat 20% of the world’s fish and meat, co-founders Alessandro Di Trapani and Hugh Petit decided it was time to shake up the industry and create a more sustainable option using the novel-protein, insects. It started with experimental baking in Alessandro’s kitchen and taste testing in the park and within two years, Grub Club became the #1 rated insect-based dog food brand in the UK.

Co-founder Alessandro Di Trapani says: “Our partnership with Pets at Home gives us an incredible opportunity to provide dog owners across the UK with a more sustainable way to feed their dog. Unlocking this distribution is crucial for us as we strive towards our mission of making the pet food industry more sustainable and providing a healthy alternative for dogs who suffer with sensitivities and intolerances to traditional pet food.”

Grub Club is the proud Grand Prix winner of the Sky Media Zero Footprint Fund 2023. After a multi-stage process involving the production and pitch of a 30 second TVC to a panel of judges of industry leaders and sustainability champions, Grub Club walked away with the £1m media value grand prize. Grub Club's TV ad will be hitting screens in 2024.

Grub Club also took home the Impact HERE Award in association with FuturePlus (sponsored by Outernet). Grub Club has been awarded £100k worth of screen time at the immersive promotional screen of the Outernet Building, outside Tottenham Court Station. Grub Club was also named the Best Eco-Friendly Pet Brand by Marie Claire for 2023
