The joy of PATS...an outsider’s perspective

PATS 2016 provides a fitting three year anniversary since marketer Ian Hills (Purple Pilchard) first dipped his fins in the fast-moving world that is premium tier pet food.
Ex Ben & Jerry’s marketer (and owner of Scruffy the Cockerpoo) Ian had set up Purple Pilchard back in 2007 to champion the specific needs of young, cash-strapped artisanal brands looking to make meaningful breakthroughs in the marketplace.
It was a chance encounter with Suzanne Brock (Nutriment) back in 2012 that first alerted Ian to the bold, meticulously researched ambitions of various fleet-footed disruptor brands seeking to offer nutritionally-dense pet food alternatives to the over-processed corporate fodder that still dominates so many pet food shelves. Nutriment wanted a vocal, no-nonsense range that talked with conviction and authority whilst enjoying itself every step of the way.
According to Ian, "Suzanne’s enthusiasm and willingness to embrace new ideas was infectious and in no time Nutriment’s marketing was punching well above its weight.’" It was actually a selfless Suzanne who put Ian in touch with fellow ‘raw’ pioneers Cotswold RAW (Chris Brierley) who had their own intriguing rural take on how to improve raw feeding convenience and appetite appeal and have also been a joy to work alongside this last year. Last but by no means least is Joe and the Dog Treat Company, who Ian also got talking to at a PATS show (albeit Sandown 2015).
According to Ian, "Joe wanted to establish top quality dog treats (free range eggs, chicken livers and beneficial herbs) that married stunning art deco packaging designs with an addictive sense of humour and a generous smattering of associated health benefits," a vision that has recently spread far beyond these shores to markets as diverse as South Korea, Italy, Germany and the United States. As a once-upon-a time outsider Ian wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate PATS as the perfect showcase for aspiring British born brands looking to showcase their bold new visions for more meaningful, forward-thinking pet foods. www.purplepilchard.co.uk

The Bucktons and Nature’s Feast brands have unveiled an exciting range of new products and merchandising solutions.
Following extensive research and development, Nature’s Feast has strengthened its offer with the launch of a new small animal food collection. The collection features a range of food, treats and hay for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, an area which represents a £72m market opportunity year on year.
It has been launched to add value to the category and is based on insight which shows 43% of shoppers perceive nuggets to be boring and processed despite their health credentials. It launched in July this year, alongside care guides, POS and other educational support.
Bucktons will once again be at PATS following a hugely successful year for the brand, which unveiled its new look aviary food range a year ago. Since then, the brand has ruffled feathers and soared from strength to strength with its new ranges, new packaging and new brand positioning. This year will see Bucktons showcase its indoor bird and aviary product range along with their wild bird offering, with focus on the new suet range ready for the forthcoming winter season.
Kirk Rothwell, Brand Manager, said: “PATS Telford is a key date in our calendar and is a must visit event for the pet trade industry. This year is no exception. We’re delighted to be showcasing our new Nature’s Feast small animal collection which has already had some great listings and some really positive reviews.”
Bucktons and Nature’s Feast are on Stand G8. For further information, contact Richard Greenwood, Pet Sales Manager on 07976 490341 or email rgreenwood@westlandhorticulture.com

Lily’s Kitchen is unveiling a brand new identity, new recipes, new flavours, new pack designs and new formats for its entire cat range – which will create excitement and add value to the cat food category.
Consisting of dry, wet, lifestage, organic and treat products to meet the needs of all cat customers, the completely new Lily’s Kitchen cat range - which will replace the existing range in its entirety - is a result of the pioneering company’s dedication to providing proper food for pets.
This resource-intensive project culminates in September with the biggest launch and marketing campaign in the company’s eight-year history. Over the past 18 months, Lily’s Kitchen has undertaken more than 126 hours of ground-breaking research with pet owners, led by a desire to truly understand not just how to reinvigorate the category but how to exceed all expectations of Britain’s 4.5 million cat owning households and their 7.5 million cats, who consume £950 million of cat food each year (Source: PFMA Population data 2016).
The launch comes at a time when cat obesity and associated health issues such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease and arthritis are prevalent amongst the UK cat population, largely driven by the ignorance of their owners about the importance of a healthy balanced diet suitable for cats. According to the PFMA, 77 per cent of vets believe pet obesity is on the rise, with 40 per cent of cats now overweight.
“Our primary concern is for the health and happiness of the UK’s pet population, which has been the backbone of our business since it launched eight years ago,” says Henrietta Morrison, founder and CEO of award-winning Lily’s Kitchen.
“Lily’s Kitchen has led the move towards natural, premium dog food and now we want to replicate this success in cat and be the market leader in natural, premium cat food. We embrace big challenges and when we recognised that the offerings for cat owners are a far cry from the offerings for dog owners, we had to do something about it. Our fantastic new cat range is evidence of our big aspirations and audacious ideas.
“We have spent a significant amount of time and considerable investment understanding the right product range for consumers, creating a range based on cat preferences and consumer preferences which will add value to our stockists’ stores.
“Lily’s Kitchen offers independent pet shop owners a premium natural brand, which meets the needs of pet owners interested in proper food using high quality ingredients from an ethical and transparent brand. The new range of cat recipes will not only deliver this, but within the extensive new range (moving from 15 to 30 SKUs at launch) pet owners will have the choice of pack formats, sub-ranges and accessible RRPs providing entry point and trial options as well as multipacks and bigger packs demonstrating improved value for money.”
Ground-breaking research
Further evidence of the huge significance of the new cat range comes with the appointment of Lily’s Kitchen’s first ever senior brand marketing manager dedicated to the cat portfolio. Imogen Harper joined the company 12 months ago and has been leading the project, which has included bespoke research to develop a better range for cats and cat owners, as well as helping to create its look and feel – including a new strapline Love at first Bite. Imogen explains:
“Through our research we observed culture, listened to cat owners and really understood the drivers influencing what they are looking for in food for their pets, the top priorities being: a high percentage meat content; natural ingredients; and packaging that is practical and makes you smile every time you see it.
“We always start with what is right for cats, then take into account what is right for the environment and with our new findings we’ve been able to understand how we can help owners make more educated decisions. There is still a lot of education needed about cats being obligate carnivores and thriving on natural high meat diets for example.
“Compared to dog owners, due to the very nature of cats, their owners tend to know less about what cats need and therefore, as a cat food producer, we have a responsibility to highlight essential information to owners making it easy to understand the key benefits. This is also an area where retailers can really add value to their customers by demonstrating their nutrition expertise, which should encourage more cat owners to shop in the independent, premium natural pet trade.
“We will be providing retailers with all the essential tools to highlight the benefits and help their customers choose the best recipes for their cats, including new bespoke POS to drive engagement at the shelf and ongoing support to ensure the changeover is seamless and to ultimately drive incremental sales.”
The new range
Lily’s Kitchen’s new wet, dry, organic and treats range for cats, which comes in the iconic look and feel of Lily’s Kitchen packaging with emotive, premium colour palettes and paper cut illustrations, is born out of Henrietta’s passion for leading positive change in the pet food industry. This all stemmed from the day she decided to take her dog Lily’s health and happiness into her own hands by creating naturally nutritious meals from scratch in her own kitchen. The range primarily aims to ensure that all cats have access to the best, most natural food and owners can truly ‘trust’ they are feeding their pets the right food for long-term happiness and health.
On the larger packs, customers can read about how Henrietta decided to make proper food for cats. They share the true story of Sophie, a pretty tabby belonging to one of Henrietta’s neighbours who was keen to feed her cat a healthier, tasty diet after seeing the success of Lily’s Kitchen’s ‘proper food’ for dogs. Many customers who have cats as well as dogs were also asking Lily’s Kitchen to expand its range, so it was important to get it right for them.
As with all Lily’s Kitchen products, the new cat range is made with a huge amount of care and love combined with extensive expertise from vets and nutritionists. The recipes are packed full of meaty greatness, which refers not only to the quantity of meat used but the high quality that is dictated by the brand’s exacting standards. And all recipes are grain free and made with absolutely no meat meal or fillers, only natural ingredients.
Lily’s Kitchen is also aiming to clear up confusion amongst cat owners about the term ‘complete’ which is often referred to on pet food. Many brands and products that look like main meals are in fact not nutritionally complete as they lack the essential nutrients required to keep cats healthy. On the contrary, all of Lily’s Kitchen’s main meals in the new cat range are nutritionally complete and balanced, including the correct proportion of Taurine as well as other essential nutrients required for optimal heart and eye health. Lily’s Kitchen has ensured the range clearly sign-posts this for cat owners.
In line with the company’s ethical and sustainable principles, all of the dry food packaging is 100% compostable and includes a feature to make the bags re-sealable to maintain freshness. The wet food is in recyclable aluminium trays rather than in non-recyclable foil pouches, which challenges category norms that single serve meals have to be in packaging that goes straight to landfill.

Benyfit Natural is showcasing itsLifestage and Special Diets alongside its complete raw food recipes for adult dogs at PATS Telford. It will be the company's first time exhibiting at the exhibition.
Benyfit Natural has become one of the fastest growing raw food manufacturers to hit the market in the last 12 months. They are rapidly increasing their number of retailers across the UK and their freezer deals are proving to be very popular. Their stockists tell them that they simply cannot keep up with the demand for their delicious recipes.
They have entered their raw food recipes in to four separate entries in the New Products Awards at PATS and visitors will also have the opportunity win one of their small freezers in a free prize draw on their stand or to get £100 of extra stock when they order a 5ft freezer at the show.
At Benyfit Natural they believe in the old adage that you only get out what you put in and that this certainly applies when it comes to dog nutrition which is why they and their team have developed a range of recipes that combine the right balance of quality raw ingredients, vitamins and minerals to maintain the health, vitality and bounce of any dog.
Their company’s founder, Ben Van Praagh, is himself a leading gundog trainer who has competed across the UK with his dogs in gundog trials but he is also a qualified chef, having trained at Crawley College. With his belief that a balanced diet leads to balanced behaviour, he has been able to combine his understanding of training dogs with his nutritional background in order to produce a range of foods that are not only natural but are also nutritionally balanced and biologically appropriate.
The feeding of a raw bone and raw meat diet is thought to have many health benefits including helping to prevent ear and gland infections, skin allergies, diabetes, heart and joint problems. The feeding of raw bones is also good for the health of a dog’s teeth and gums.
The Benyfit Natural complete raw food recipes use a variety of ethically sourced and Defra approved British human grade meats such as chicken, turkey and beef as well as tripe. They also contain ground bones, carrot, broccoli, swede, offal, flaxseed oil, kelp and herbs as well as raw eggs all of which offer a natural combination of vitamins, minerals, omega oils and amino acids to produce a healthy skin, coat, joints, thyroid and cell production as well as helping to support the immune system. The adult food is coarsely minced to provide the texture that dogs like. All varieties are designed to help maintain a healthy weight for an adult dog and are veterinary approved and were developed by Ben with the help of their team of advises who include veterinary surgeons, animal nutritionists and behaviourists.
The Benyfit Puppy Food is finely minced for small mouths and also contains Verm-X for healthy intestinal hygiene. The Benyfit Senior food helps to maintain the correct weight of older or less active dogs and also contains added Glucosamine, MSM and Chondroitin for healthy joints and cartilages enabling easier movement.
The Premium Blend combines a range of novel proteins which are not only low in fat but are also kind to the digestive system whilst at the same time giving a dog all the vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.
The Premium Blend product is made using raw British venison flank with the bone in, whole rabbit (skinned) and turkey carcass, heart, liver, carrots, broccoli, swede, whole eggs, kelp, herbs and flaxseed oil. These ingredients are carefully combined to provide any working dog with the nutritionally balanced and complete diet they deserve. Rabbit contains vitamins B1, B3 and B5 as well as Copper and Magnesium. Venison is low in fat and is full of vitamins and Iron and is also high in Protein. Turkey is ideal for dogs that develop allergies to other poultry such as chicken and the bones contain Calcium and Phosphorus which are needed for healthy teeth and bones.
As with all Natural Benyfit’s recipes, Premium Blend contains NO animal derivatives, NO grains and NO carbs just wholesome raw food.
The latest editions to the range are Meat Feast and Sensitive. Meat Feast is vegetable free and has been created primarily to tackle the problem of itchy skin, one of the major symptoms of a yeast intolerance. Often grain and gluten can cause these types of problems but if these have been eliminated from the diet and the itching persists, it is more likely to be caused by the sugars in vegetables. Swapping to a vegetable free diet will stop the excessive itching and scratching in dogs prone to this intolerance. This product is also fantastic however for people wishing to feed a nutritionally balanced diet free of vegetables for any other reason.
A recent convert to Benyfit Natural, Sara Mason whose dog Harry suffered from yeast intolerance and was cured completely by switching to the Meat Feast recipe said, “I was beside myself with worry to see Harry with such sore skin from excessive scratching. Nothing I tried seemed to cure the problem until I found out about Benyfit Natural’s Meat Feast. I am very happy with the food Harry is
The Sensitive diet as the name suggest is a satisfying and healthy meal to assist sensitive stomachs, those with pancreatitis or prone to forming bladder stones as it contains no offal, is low in purine and low fat (so also great for overweight working dogs).
The recipe contains human grade Turkey with bone, Green Lambs Tripe, Broccoli, Carrot, Swede, Flaxseed Oil, Egg, Kelp, Celery Seeds, Alfalfa, Nettles, Rosemary, Psyllium Husks, Clivers and Wild Yam.
Benyfit Natural has recently brought out new packaging. Their new tubs which are BPA free to avoid leakage of any nasty toxins are made from recycled materials and are recyclable. Available in 500g and 1kg sizes, they can be conveniently stored in the freezer with the meat contents easy to portion out. They have also made sure that there is no soggy food of icy film on the top by blast-freezing the contents so that the texture and taste remains - a major selling point of the range.

With a giant cod fish and a large haddock centre-stage in their 'Ingredients Showcase' display, you'd be excused thinking Beco Pets were fishing for compliments for their new eco-conscious Food For Dogs.
The ingredients, which included the new food range's other two recipes, a leg of wild boar and some free-range chickens, caught the eye of PATS Telford delegates on the first day.
George Bramble, Beco's co-Founder and Sales Director, said: "Fresh meat and fish have never been exhibited at PATS before and our Beco eco-market has drawn huge amounts of interest from visitors to the show, brilliantly organised as always. We even ran out of catalogues.
"We have been really pleased at how the market has drawn people to our stand and it's also highlighted the importance of fresh meat over meat meal and by-products in dog food. It spotlights back basic ingredient, farm products and food provenance. All our ingredients are human grade, ethically and locally sourced."
The Beco team were amused by the response when they asked visitors to identify which fish on display was the cod and which was the haddock. Less than 30 per cent of people asked got it right.
"They probably found it hard to tell the difference because our fish isn't covered in batter and surrounded by chips!" added George.

Belgium company Edgard & Cooper has brought its delicious recipes for dogs, that contain only 100% fresh meat and 100% natural ingredients, to the UK! The company has recently set up its UK headquarters in London.
After Edgard and Cooper both struggled to digest other dog food products, which also made Edgard sick, their owners decided that every pet deserves to eat fresh. And so they developed the world’s first fresh meat kibble. The market is dominated by dog food that contains meat meal, which is low in digestibility and biological value compared to fresh meat.
Jurgen Degrande, Manager at Edgard & Cooper explains: "Meat meal is actually offal being worked intensively to a powder. And yet it is often presented as ‘real meat’. At Edgard & Cooper, we believe dog food must be made from fresh cuts of meat and recognizable natural ingredients, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables.”
Soon to be available in the UK are a range of grain-free, gluten-free and even organic kibbles, tins and cups. Every bowl bursts with tasty veggies, berries and herbs, giving your dog all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants they need to keep them healthy from nose to tail.
Edgard & Cooper was founded in Belgium by three enthusiastic entrepreneurs: Koen Bostoen, Louis Chalabi, and Jurgen Degrande. Their inspiration to create 100% fresh products came from their own dogs, Edgard and Cooper, who struggled to digest other dog food products on the market.
Edgard & Cooper have a range of delicious meat meal free kibbles, tins, and cups, and have grain-free, gluten-free and organic recipes. They set up their UK headquarters September 2016 to further their mission to help all dogs enjoy tasty and healthy food.
They donate 10% of all profits to dog charities around the world, and their packaging is made of 100% biodegradable materials, printed with 100% water-based inks without chemicals, making them fully compostable.

Sometimes the moment just seems right which is why we decided that 2016 was the perfect moment to attend our first PATS show (stand A2) , joining a number of the new generation of superior, nutritionally-dense pet foods that are in tune with the thinking of increasingly health-conscious pet owners.
Cotswold RAW is proud of its role as an ambassador for countryside common sense acting as a passionate rural voice (local sourcing & traceability) in a blossoming product sector historically dominated by large corporates and a Home Counties dominated pet scene.
Recently shortlisted for ‘Prestigious Rural Business and Pet Quip awards, Cotswold RAW is a small dynamic team with a strong track record in innovation which in 2016 includes, snappy transparent packaging (in stark contrast to traditional ‘no peeking’ ice cream tubs that dominate the ‘raw scene, their first of many puppy propositions and an extended portfolio of alternative protein pet foods (e.g. turkey & tripe) because chicken isn’t for everyone and even chicken lovers like a little variety from time to time.
At the very pinnacle of Cotswold RAW successes in 2016 has been their recently completed series of inspiring county shows (June-September) which enabled the Cotswold RAW squad to discuss and debate premium tier pet food with the same animal-loving community who helped shape the whole Cotswold RAW offer 18 mths earlier.
At the heart of Cotswold’s success has been their ground-breaking sausage sub-range which marries nutritional integrity with convenience, foodiness and portion control, the perfect stepping stone from bland, nutritionally vacant kibble to more mainstream raw minces.

Radical new tortoise home showcased at PATS
An East Yorkshire-based pet product company are hoping traditional methods of keeping young tortoises indoors within wooden or glass vivariums will soon be a thing of the past, after unveiling a completely innovative and radical approach in new tortoise housing at PATS Telford...
An East Yorkshire-based pet product company are hoping traditional methods of keeping young tortoises indoors within wooden or glass vivariums will soon be a thing of the past, after unveiling a completely innovative and radical approach in new tortoise housing at PATS Telford.
As one would expect the new tortoise enclosure encompasses many practical and essential features to ensure the wellbeing of its inhabitants, but it’s the incredible aesthetics which really puts this new housing into a league of its own, for it has been ingeniously designed and manufactured to resemble a large mother-tortoise. Vividarium, the company responsible for its creation, believe the lifelike polyresin animal is sure to be a real crowd pleaser when it’s showcased to thousands of potential customers at the PATS Telford in September.
And it would appear that the reptile industry seem to agree, with the editor of the Practical Reptile Keeping Magazine recently waxing lyrical of its unique features, benefits and exquisite fine details, in a two page review of the product.
The clever and innovative thinking, which the Practical Reptile Magazine review eloquently portrayed, has obviously been at the forefront of the product’s design at every stage, and has enabled the housing to boast several unique features, benefitting both the hobbyist and the inhabitants alike. - Features include an in-built hide, formed out of the inside of the head of the enclosure, so baby tortoises can retreat and hide out, reducing stress levels.
- Internal oval shape, reducing the risk of young tortoises toppling over on to their backs, which they often do when trying to shimmy up right-angled perimeter walls in more traditional rectangular vivariums.
- Inbuilt cable tidy makes a neat and tidy job of the lighting.
- Made from lightweight resin which means its waterproof, it won’t rot, it’s easy to manoeuvre and easy to clean and disinfect.
The Vividarium Tortoise Home is the very first product to come off the production line for the fledgling company, but they already have plans in place to introduce a further six similarly striking designs to their portfolio next year. These will include snakes, lizards and amphibians.
With design patents already fully granted in 28 countries worldwide and a 160,000 square foot factory able to handle any amount of orders, Vividarium may start to see the biggest shake-up in the reptile housing industry within the last four decades.

URICA, the government-backed early payment network for SMEs, is one of the sponsors of the PetQuip Awards at PATS 2016 and will be joining forces with PetQuip to launch a new service to the association’s members at the show.
Through URICA, PetQuip members can use their online platform, enabling them to get their customer invoices paid in cash as early as the day after approval. URICA’s unique early payment offering means businesses can trade on the terms that suit their business.
All businesses need to do is select their invoices and send them online via URICA, and receive cash payment on those invoices once URICA has confirmed payment from the customer.
The customer then pays URICA the entire value of the invoice, up to 90 days after the original invoice date. In total, URICA is now in the position to pay PetQuip’s members a total of £6,400,000 in cash, tomorrow. For those businesses, there is no risk, zero debt, and no fear of late or non-payment of their invoices any longer.
A critical advantage of URICA’s support for PetQuip members is access to their global partners, and in particular Euler Hermes for credit checking of existing and new customers, helping protect their businesses from commercial risks. This partnership with URICA offers PetQuip members cutting edge solutions to finance, risk and credit insurance.
One pet care company that has already experienced the value of the URICA service is Hownd, one of the finalists in this year’s PetQuip ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ award. In 2012, Mark Hirschel and Jo Amit, old family friends and both dog lovers, decided to take the lead in creating gentle and natural grooming products for pets, and formed Butch & Bess, now re-branded as Hownd.
The company started using URICA when it began supplying Pets at Home stores with their products, in the autumn of 2015. Having explored using another finance product in order to get early payment on their invoices, Hownd found it to be too difficult to work with, lacking in flexibility and quite expensive.
The URICA service has proved to be just the opposite. As Mark Hirschel commented: “With URICA, it’s been a very good working relationship and more favourable for businesses. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
"We can adjust every invoice according to how strong or weak our cash flow is and URICA releases 100 per cent of the cash in the invoice. Everything with URICA feels almost immediate and there’s always a person there on the other end of a phone or email.
"The one thing that URICA is not, is complicated – that’s for sure. It’s an easy, flexible system which just makes sense. For the fee that I’m paying, which is such a small percentage of the invoice value, it makes sense, feels right, and I don’t feel bad spending the money on such a good service for the business. It’s all about cash flow for us.”
Members of the URICA team will be at PATS on the PetQuip stand (B60) to provide association members and potential members with details of the scheme.
Of the partnership, Lindsay Whitelaw, Founder & Chairman of URICA, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with PetQuip to help its members grow and thrive. In an increasingly tough and globalised economy, and with the banks unable to provide the support that is needed, we aim to make sure smaller businesses can grow, employ more staff, export and thrive, but freeing them from the burden of late payment.”
Amanda Sizer Barrett, Director General of PetQuip and Gardenex, said: “The PATS exhibition provides us with an excellent platform from which to launch our latest business service to the pet product industry. We expect that many of our members will wish to explore the same flexible cash flow benefits as Hownd and that the URICA arrangement will encourage other pet care suppliers to explore the many benefits of PetQuip membership.”
