Award-winning pet store owners vow to return despite shop's closure following row with landlord

The owners of an award-winning pet store set to close in a fortnight have told Pet Trade Xtra this week they hope to return to the pet industry in the future. The owners of an award-winning pet store set to close in a fortnight have told Pet Trade Xtra this week they hope to return to the pet industry in the future. Husband-and-wife team Jamie and Liz Gleave are being forced to shut down Paws and Claws at Frodsham Railway Station, Cheshire, due to problems with their new landlord.

“We will be permanently closing our shop in a fortnight,” said Jamie.  “We had planned to sell the business to ensure it remained part of Frodsham's independent retail offering. However the new landlord did not want to proactively work with us to facilitate the sale after we had secured a willing buyer.”

Paws and Claws was voted UK Retailer of the Year in 2017 at the PetQuip Awards, as Jamie and Liz were rewarded for all their efforts in transforming an ailing business they bought in 2010.

The Arch Company, which claims to be largest provider of properties for small and medium sized business in England and Wales, took over as landlord after buying Network Rail’s portfolio of commercial properties.

“Sadly like many commercial landlords they do not appear to appreciate the challenges that small independent businesses currently face in the retail environment, or the contribution they make towards the vibrancy and diversity of towns,” said Jamie.

“In our case it seems they are content for an established business to just close and leave their property empty, rather than work with them to secure its long term occupancy and future rental income.”

Jamie continued: “We're also facing repair bills and may potentially have to pay a worrying large sum of money for a water leak that was not our fault. The uncertainty over this is likely to continue for at least a month after we close our doors.

“The actions and attitude of our landlord are, quite frankly, unfathomable and the whole experience has made Liz quite unwell in recent weeks.

“We're very sad to be leaving the pet trade but our landlord has put us in an untenable position.  We have looked into whether we could move the business into another property in the town, but nothing suitable is available and if I am honest our preference would be to buy something outright rather than ever rent again.

“In terms of the future, we are looking to relocate to Shropshire in a couple of years once our son has finished school and our house renovations are completed.  It's likely Liz will open another shop once we're settled, but she is also interested in other possible businesses such as dog daycare or kennels. At the moment the options are open, but I expect we will be back at some point.”

The Arch Company have said they have tried to find a solution to the concerns raised by Jamie and Liz.

Pat Flynn, PetQuip’s trade association manager, said: “It’s sad to see Jamie and Liz having to close their award-winning business under such difficult circumstances. It’s a fantastic and unique pet store that deservedly won the PetQuip Retailer of the Year Award in 2017, and such a shame it will no longer be in operation. I wish Jamie and Liz all the best for the future and hope that one day they return to the pet trade.”

PATS, the UK’s number one pet industry exhibition, is pleased that once again the PetQuip Awards will be presented at a gala dinner and party on the first evening of PATS Telford (Sunday, September 22) and are happy to be major sponsors of the event.

The PetQuip Awards, now in their seventh year, have consistently delivered a professional, enjoyable and successful networking evening event for the whole industry where suppliers and retailers can mix, have fun and celebrate the industry’s many successes.

“Over the past few years we have worked closely with PetQuip to deliver a strong international presence at our shows,” said organiser Gordon Thomas, “and have been working even harder this year to make sure PATS Telford and the PetQuip Awards are the BEST in the business.

“We are extremely pleased that the Awards will again be taking place after the first day of PATS Telford and proud to back such a prestigious event.

“There are some exciting new categories in the PetQuip Awards, which can only add more prestige to this fabulous event.”

The PATS Telford New Product Awards, sponsored by pbwnews, will also be presented during the PetQuip gala awards dinner

Amanda Sizer Barrett MBE, Director General of PetQuip, said: “We applaud the PATS organisers for putting on a professional, successful exhibition at Telford. So it’s great for the PetQuip team to work together with the PATS team to support this vibrant industry.”

And Pat Flynn, PetQuip’s Trade Association Manager added: “The PetQuip Awards have grown to such a degree that companies can’t wait to enter – each year we receive calls before officially launching the Awards at PATS Sandown.

“It’s an event where retailers from both the UK and internationally, groomers and suppliers all come together to network, see the latest innovative pet products, and celebrate the innovations on the first evening of the show at the PetQuip Awards dinner and party. We appreciate the huge support that PATS gives us.”

PetQuip has introduced two additional categories to the Awards for 2019.  A category for small animals has been added to the Products section and there is also a new Merchandising category, which is open to suppliers, retailers or collaborations between suppliers and retailers.

Recruitment expert Lynda Ward advises people working in the pet industry to take their time when deciding on a career move.

Lynda, founder of the award-winning recruitment specialists Pet Trade Solutions, says: “When it comes to career advice, I always advise people to take a long hard look at their current situation and prospects before making a move…as it can sometimes be a case of out of the frying pan into the fire.

"I receive many calls from people asking advice on whether or not they should accept a job offer, or seek a new role and perhaps surprisingly this can sometimes result in advising them to remain where they are when I feel it is in their best interests.

"A confidential chat can potentially reveal things which could easily be resolved if the person spoke to their existing employer and suggested ways to make changes … without them taking the drastic action of leaving an otherwise satisfactory position.

Accapi Group managing director, Rob Hughes said: “We saw the OTS as an important step in truly bringing canine gear to the outdoor market. Office dog Jasper is counting down the days to Christmas – as the furry face of the Fish4Dogs advent calendar.

The one-year-old sprocker (cocker x springer) spaniel gained the honour after topping a social media poll which asked followers to vote for their favourite.

The seasonal shot sees Jasper, owned by Customer Services Advisor Jill Aston, in front of a festive backdrop.

“Jasper has been coming into the office since he was a pup so there was always a good chance he’d worm his way into the marketing material somehow,” she said.

Jasper was pipped against three of his canine colleagues in the poll.

Added Jill: “It took plenty of sharing but being the beautiful boy that he is, Jasper was crowned champion of the advent calendar. The fame and glory don’t seem to have gone to his head yet but there is still time!”

Beautifully designed and individually film wrapped for freshness. The calendars have an RRP £7.50 per unit. They are available to order now.

They contain:

  • Squid Bites – soft and chewy discs made from oven baked squid that are incredibly tasty.
  • Mackerel Morsels for coat, skin and joints – rich in Omega 3 these salmon and mackerel fish-shaped treats are easily digestible and support healthy, shiny coats and supple joints.
  • Sea Jerky Squares – made from 100 per cent fish skins, these natural, low calorie crunchy treats help clean teeth and control tartar.

Also being produced for the festive period, is the Fish4Dogs Christmas Cracker which features Jasper alongside canine colleagues Zac, Rodney and Henry. The cracker is an attractive and affordable gift styled on the popular tradition of a cracker which is pulled apart to reveal a gift (but without the bang to avoid upsetting our four-legged friends).

Inside the cracker is a 75g bag of Fish4Dogs Mackerel Morsels. The crackers have an RRP of £3.00 and are available now for trade orders.

Revealed: Dogs most likely to receive pet therapy

The Border Collie receives more behaviour therapy than any other breed, new data from John Lewis Pet Insurance reveals...

The Border Collie receives more behaviour therapy than any other breed, new data from John Lewis Pet Insurance reveals.

Owners of the shepherding breed are the most likely to claim on their pet insurance for veterinary treatment and therapy for behavioural issues.

Cocker Spaniels, Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Cockapoos and Border Terriers also made the top five, according to customer data from John Lewis Pet Insurance.

Behaviour therapy can be used to treat a range of common conditions including excessive barking, destructive behaviour, aggression towards people or other animals, separation anxiety and fear of people, places and noises.

It is also used by vets to treat more unusual behaviour issues including dogs which eat unusual non-food items or obsessive behaviours such as compulsive tail chasing and licking.

Behaviour therapy typically includes a home consultation where experts investigate the reasons for the behaviour, including delving into their puppy years, environment and lifestyle. They then come up with a therapy treatment plan. This could include training exercises or even props such as CDs and downloads to treat noise phobias, or dog ‘play mats’ and puzzle toys to alleviate boredom in unruly pets.

Rebecca Cannon, a Veterinary Surgeon for RSA, which underwrites John Lewis Pet Insurance, says: "Working dogs such as Border Collies have been bred to have exceptional herding abilities and are highly intelligent and energetic.

"But, if they are not given a suitable outlet for these instinctive behaviours or not sufficiently stimulated with regular physical and mental exercise, they can become frustrated, bored or anxious.

"However, we should be careful not to classify entire breeds as aggressive or hypersensitive because individual dogs can vary enormously, just as people do."

Dog trainer Jennifer Billot, of Bone Ball Bark, who has a masters degree in canine life sciences, said poor behaviour can stem from boredom - and recommends taking your pet for a swim, play dates with other dogs and hiding their food to keep them busy.

She says: "Working dogs such as Border Collies, Labradors and Spaniels are some of Britain’s best loved breeds and make incredible pets. But they require a lot of physical and mental exercise.

"When training your dog, owners should remember things - positive reinforcement, consistency and a clear message’, she says. ‘Tell your dog what to do as opposed to what not to do.

"We can get into the habit of saying ‘no, no, no’ to a lot of their behaviours, without giving them an alternative. If you know they have a habit of getting in the way during dinner time, instead of shooing them away or telling them off, teach them a ‘go to bed’ or ‘stay’ on a mat or bed close to the table. They can still watch what is going on but you have given them a positive alternative that can be rewarded."

Largest ever response to Rabbit Awareness Week

Burgess Pet Care, the organisers of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), has announced this week that this year's Protect and Prevent campaign has been the most successful RAW campaign yet...

Burgess Pet Care, the organisers of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), has announced this week that this year's Protect and Prevent campaign has been the most successful RAW campaign yet.

Over 5,000 campaign packs were downloaded from the Rabbit Awareness Week website and feedback from veterinary practices taking part in RAW has shown an increase in the number of RVHD2 vaccines being administered to rabbits.

Rabbit Awareness Week has been helping to improve the lives of pet rabbits in the UK for 13 years. This year’s Protect and Prevent campaign urged rabbit owners to get their rabbits vaccinated, following the continued outbreak of the latest deadly strain of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease (RVHD2).

Veterinary practices were also urged to make sure they were stocking the necessary vaccines to protect rabbits against RVHD2 and other fatal diseases such as RVHD and myxomatosis. Thousands of veterinary practices, pet retail shops and rescue centres all held events throughout the week of RAW to help raise awareness of this year’s campaign and the importance of vaccinations.

Peter Lancaster, Marketing Manager at Burgess Pet Care said: “RVHD2 is a very serious and horrible disease that has already claimed the lives of too many rabbits in the UK. This year’s Protect and Prevent campaign successfully raised awareness of the dangers around RVHD2 and the importance of vaccinations to protect rabbits against fatal diseases.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the RAW partners, veterinary practices, rescue centres, pet shop retailers and, of course, rabbit owners, for their continued support in helping us to improve the health and wellbeing of rabbits. Collectively, the RAW partners are committed to maintaining this momentum of the campaign in addressing the issue of preventative healthcare for UK’s rabbits. Work has already begun on planning for next year’s campaign and we look forward to announcing more details in due course.”

The RAW partners received calls from rabbit owners in advance of this year’s campaign raising concerns that not enough practices were stocking the RVHD2 vaccines that were necessary to protect their rabbits. Comparing sales figures of the RVHD2 vaccines from June 2019 against June 2018 shows a 55% increase in the uptake of vaccinations from the veterinary sector year-on-year.

Dr Richard Saunders, veterinary advisor to RWAF, said: "We heard lots of heart-breaking stories from owners and vets alike about rabbits, sometimes whole groups of rabbits, which had not been vaccinated. None of those people realised just how widespread the RVHD2 is, and how easy it is to pick it up. We will continue to campaign and share our message that it is very much better late than never to vaccinate rabbits against all three killer diseases of rabbits: myxomatosis, Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 1 and 2."

RVHD2 still poses a significant threat to pet rabbits as the disease continues to spread. The only way to address this by vaccinating, vaccinations and veterinary professionals must continue to raise awareness of this risk by communicating the importance of vaccinations to rabbit owning clients.

This year’s campaign was supported by the RSPCA, PDSA, Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF), Wood Green the Animals Charity and Blue Cross.

Dr Jane Tyson, Scientific Officer and rabbit behaviour and welfare expert at the RSPCA, said: "Although Rabbit Awareness Week has ended for another year, it is crucial the ‘Protect and Prevent’ message around the importance of vaccinating rabbits against diseases such as Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (RVHD2) are heeded by owners.

“As more vaccines are being sold into veterinary practices we continue to urge rabbit owners to speak with their vet to ensure their pets receive regular vaccinations and health checks which are a vital part of keeping their rabbits healthy and safe.”

PDSA Vet Nurse, Kristiana Shirley, said: “Rabbit Awareness Week provided us with a great opportunity to engage with rabbit owners and raise awareness of the key preventative healthcare our bunnies so vitally need.

“During Rabbit Awareness Week in June, we saw a significant increase in the number of vaccines given when compared to previous months, and an increase in our rabbit MOTs too, which we hope is just the start of a trend which sees more owners protecting their rabbits from preventable, fatal diseases.”

The theme for next year’s Rabbit Awareness Week campaign will be announced at a later date.

Pet industry confirms interest in Petindex, say organisers

The Pet Industry Federation, organisers of the Petindex show, have announced a strong start to sales of trade stands for the event...

The Pet Industry Federation, organisers of the Petindex show, have announced a strong start to sales of trade stands for the event.

The event, which takes place from 26-27 April 2020, is aimed at all types of pet businesses, so will not only attract groomers, kennels/catteries and retailers, but also potential pet influencers such as dog walkers, home boarders and day care owners.

The trade show will incorporate an international zone for overseas companies and PIF is working with an overseas media partner, Dähne Verlag, publishers of PET Worldwide, to drive interest from overseas visitors. There will also be an Incubator Zone for new suppliers/manufacturers and a strong focus on education with a host of relevant seminars for pet professionals taking place for the duration of the event, as well as the 2020 British Dog Grooming Championships.

The on-site DoubleTree Hilton hotel has been secured for the Pet Industry Federation Awards, which will take place on the Sunday night making it really convenient for exhibitors and visitors alike to attend and celebrate after a day at the show.

Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, commented: "We are delighted that so many trade exhibitors have confirmed their interest in Petindex by securing a stand at the show. The aim of Petindex is simply to bring the whole pet industry under one roof at the same time by offering a range of features for pet professionals looking for more than just a trade show."

Jo Amit, co-founder of HOWND, said: "We are always keen to exhibit at new shows, especially if the organisers have run successful trade events in the past with strong pre-event marketing in the lead up. We have been exhibiting at the British Dog Grooming Championships for years now and always been very happy with the results. What drew us to Petindex was the diversity of the show. We will be able to network with a wider selection of prospects, helped by the fact that entrance is free. We often have to miss the PIF awards so having this take place at the same event is a significant saving."

Georgina Bashforth, MD of Leucillin, said: "We are delighted to have booked our stand at PIF’s fresh take on an industry trade show, which looks to welcome through its doors not only retail business’ but also all pet care professionals and enthusiasts from all corners of the market. As specialists in animal skin health our Leucillin Animal Skincare is a broad spectrum product which has a huge variety of uses and benefits for all animal owners, professionals and care providers."

Donna Piercy, from GHS Direct, explained: "GHS has been making and supplying hygiene products for over 30 years. We have many contacts and we supply all types and sizes of businesses and people within the animal care sector. This new show will be an ideal opportunity to meet new and existing customers, promote our products and the Company.  I feel the show will be extremely popular and will attract many visitors.  GHS are therefore very much looking forward to being an exhibitor."

Petindex trade stands are available in a range of sizes and are competitively priced with each one including shell scheme, fascia board, carpet, power and light. PIF members receive a generous 20% discount on the price of their stand.

Grace and Keston, who have served the Force for 15 and 12 years respectively, performing a host of public order and specialist operational tasks, received the PDSA Order of Merit* – the animal equivalent of the OBE.

The equine duo** were joined by their former riders; Police Constable Helen Ridge and Police Sergeant Craig Richards, at Hampton Court Palace, to formally receive their prestigious Medals.

Commenting on the awards, PDSA Director General, Jan McLoughlin, said: “It is with great pride that we award Grace and Keston with the PDSA Order of Merit today.

“They both had long, exemplary careers, giving tireless devotion and outstanding service to society.

“Through the PDSA Animal Awards programme we seek to raise the status of animals in society and honour the incredible contribution they make to our lives.  Grace and Keston’s extraordinary work warrants the highest recognition, making them worthy recipients of the PDSA Order of Merit.”

Grace and Keston’s careers

Grace and Keston joined the Metropolitan Police in 2004 and 2007 respectively, and were trained to perform a host of public order and specialist roles.

Horses used for such duties must have a unique set of skills. They must be unwavering when surrounded by other horses, able to cope with the most extreme nuisance and noise, fit and willing to react without question to their riders and, hardest of all, possess the ability to work independently of other horses.

Many horses have been tested and found to be unsuitable for such roles, but Grace and Keston were unique in that they performed impeccably, year in, year out, for over a decade.

After completing her training in 2004, Grace was posted to Lewisham Police Stables. She carried out various duties, including escorting the military, public order policing at football matches and other sporting events, crime patrols and public disorder incidents - including providing support during the London riots in 2011. Grace also carried out reassurance patrols and school visits and was a huge fan with children that she met.

She retired from regular patrols in 2019 but continues to be stabled at Imber Court, where she provides training and support to the younger horses.

Keston was posted to Hammersmith Stables following his training and took part in high profile public order policing, including the London Olympics, Notting Hill Carnival and numerous high profile football matches.

He was involved in the serious disorder at a Millwall versus Birmingham football match, where the Mounted Unit went in to support and protect foot duty officers. His rider received a commendation for his actions.

He was also present at the Million Mask March, where a number of horses and officers were seriously injured. Keston behaved honourably throughout the incident, despite the chaos, and was a rock to the other horses.

The two horses also worked together during the Gaza demonstrations in Kensington High Street in 2009, where barriers and other objects were thrown at the horses.

Keston sadly passed away in January 2019, shortly after being retired from regular patrols.

Award reaction

Craig Richards, who nominated Grace and Keston for their awards, said: “Grace and Keston were the perfect Police Horses, performing impeccably during their lengthy careers. They often worked in challenging and hostile situations, ignoring distractions and dangers, never faltering in their duty. They were a pleasure to ride and are a credit to the Force.

“The Metropolitan Police has a proud tradition of receiving medals from PDSA for the contribution our animals make to society. It is a huge honour for Grace and Keston to be awarded the PDSA Order of Merit. I’m incredibly sad that Keston is no longer with us to receive his honour, but having their actions recognised in this way is truly fantastic and I am immensely proud of everything they both achieved.”

Discussing the honour, Inspector Simon Rooke from the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch, said: ‘The Metropolitan Police Taskforce are extremely proud of both Police Horses Keston and Grace, who have the honour of receiving the PDSA Order of Merit. Sadly Police Horse Keston is no longer with us, but this award is so fitting to recognise their service in this way. Both horses have shown extraordinary bravery and the unique bond of trust between horse and rider, and fully deserve this recognition.”

Grace and Keston take the total number of PDSA Order of Merit recipients to 30, including 18 dogs and 12 horses. For more information on the recipients visit www.pdsa.org.uk/OOMhorses.

The PDSA Order of Merit, which was instituted in 2014, recognises animals who display outstanding devotion to their owner or wider society, above and beyond normal companionship – and represents an exceptional example of the special relationship that exists between animals and humans. It is widely acknowledged as the animal equivalent of the OBE. For more information about previous PDSA Medal recipients, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/Medals.

PDSA’s Animal Awards Programme was instituted in 1943 by the charity’s founder, Maria Dickin. She believed that, if animals were recognised for their heroic actions, it would help to raise their status in society, ensuring they are better treated. The charity continues this legacy today with the world’s leading Animal Awards Programme.

PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, providing free and reduced-cost veterinary care to the pets of people in financial need. The charity strives to improve the wellbeing of all pets’ lives through providing preventive care, educating pet owners and treating pets when they become sick or injured. Today, PDSA treats around 470,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable pets a year, through our nationwide network of 48 Pet Hospitals. For more information about the charity visit www.pdsa.org.uk.

The owner of the store told Black Country Live: "I came to work Friday morning and I was in bits. I've only been open 12 weeks so this is really unnerving.

"They emptied the shelves and unless the insurance allow me to claim, I can’t see me being able to afford to put the stock back, It’s so upsetting."

Nutriment is leader of the pack on ‘All About Dog Food’ supersite

Nutriment has been ranked as the highest rated dog food – across all categories – on the UK’s number one dog food advice and rating website, All About Dog Food...

Nutriment has been ranked as the highest rated dog food – across all categories – on the UK’s number one dog food advice and rating website, All About Dog Food.

Established in 2011, All About Dog Food’s creator, David Jackson, intended to create a one-stop- shop platform for dog owners who want to know more about their dog’s food. It is completely independent and provides reviews, tips, advice, information and more to its 90,000-a-month visitors. Following a career in canine nutrition, David’s primary objective is to ensure that dog owners across the country are able to make the most informed decision when it comes to the food they give their dogs.

Nutriment’s core product range – with adult, puppy and senior varieties – is the only dog food which has been awarded the maximum nutritional rating of 100%. The nutritional rating represents how beneficial the food is expected to be for the majority of dogs. Foods and ingredients are scored according to a number of criteria, including bio-appropriateness, quality and bio-availability of nutrients, quantity of ingredients or class of ingredients, synergies between specific ingredients, the nutrients they contain and even dog food production methods. More information on the algorithm used to calculate nutritional ratings is available at AllAboutDogFood.co.uk.

“It goes without saying that creating the highest quality raw pet food is a passion for all of us here at Nutriment. As a team of true dog lovers, being able to create raw food which contributes to the health and happiness of our pets is really rewarding,” comments Ryan Winwright, Trade Manager at Nutriment. “Continuing to be recognised for what we do and how we do it is something that makes us all very proud and drives us to continue our commitment and dedication to this industry.”

The recently-launched Nutriment Support range has also been given a very high introductory ranking, with a nutritional rating of between 94-98%. The support range is specifically designed by Nutriment’s in-house nutritionists to provide nutritional support for ongoing canine health concerns and has recently won the New Product Award at PATS Sandown. The range is available in 5 varieties: Low Purine & Phosphorus (98%), Liver (97%), Recovery (96%), Kidney (96%) and Light (94%).

In the seven days leading up to the publication of this release, over 2000 people have viewed the product page of the Nutriment Adult products – making it the most viewed product page across the site. The review given by All About Dog Food is hugely complimentary: “I'm not sure there are enough superlatives in the English language for Nutriment. Each of the Nutriment adult varieties contains a whopping 85% high grade, British meat. Nutriment is not only grain free, it also doesn't contain any carb alternatives like potatoes, lentils or even peas. Instead, Nutriment uses an excellent array of top- end vegetables. The range and quality of the nutritional supplements is really second to none. Naturally, Nutriment is free from anything remotely controversial and is completely hypoallergenic making it suitable for even very sensitive dogs. Conclusion: Nutriment is raw feeding at its very best.”

Later this year, Nutriment will be exhibiting at PATS Telford and taking part in the PetQuip awards, which is in association with the trade show. The team are hopeful that the success and positive reception that the Nutriment portfolio continues to receive will extend to this event.

Exo Terra’s Aztec Terrarium is the cornerstone of a mystical ancient pre-Columbian terrarium set-up...

Exo Terra’s Aztec Terrarium is the cornerstone of a mystical ancient pre-Columbian terrarium set-up.

The Aztec terrarium’s unique Aztec background is inspired by the astonishing art and impressive relics that were left behind by pre-Columbian cultures. The Aztec Terrarium is ideal for arboreal reptile and amphibian species.

Its unique Aztec background provides more 3-D space for tree dwelling species like tree boas & pythons, day geckos, leaf-tailed geckos, tokay geckos, anoles, tree frogs, etc.

In roughly 200 years, the Aztec empire grew from a nomadic tribe to the ruling empire in the valley of Mexico and beyond. The legend goes that the place where they built their capital was indicated by a sign of the gods: an eagle perched on top of a cactus, holding a snake.

Aztec culture was strongly connected to nature, attributing supernatural powers to several animals. The snake played an important role, representing fertility and abundance. Frogs, toads and amphibians in general symbolised earth and rain and were associated with water, fertility and agriculture. While Eagles were considered supreme aerial predators: fearless, brave and daring. Religion was another important aspect of the Aztec culture and was characterised by a whole range of gods. To honour these gods, they raised impressive statues, created beautiful relics and built magnificent temples.

Exo Terra’s Aztec Range creates a mystical ancient Mesoamerican atmosphere in your terrarium. The Aztec terrarium and decoration is inspired by the astonishing art and impressive relics that were left behind by pre-Columbian cultures. Revive and admire the magnificence of this lost civilisation by decorating your terrarium with one or more of the functional Exo Terra Aztec decoration items!

The new range Aztec Exo Terra Terrariums and Ornaments will be available from July.

As one of four finalists in the Leadership in the Private Sector category of the prestigious 2019 Leading Wales Awards, Ceri Rundle was invited to attend a judging panel on Friday July 12th at the Hilton Cardiff.

The Leading Wales Awards® were developed by a consortium of professional institutes, voluntary and public sector bodies as well as private companies. The Awards seek to identify, recognise and celebrate personal achievement in outstanding leadership in Wales.

This final stage – having been selected from shortlisted candidates from businesses as diverse as engineering and data – saw Ceri interviewed by a panel of 4 including 2 previous winners.

With a theme in this year of “Daring to Lead®” the judging criteria had sought individuals in Wales whose leadership is courageous, inspirational and transformational.

Ceri whose background took her from breeding, working and trialling her Border Collies to developing her own brand of natural food, treats and herbs for working and active dogs says, “My husband Phil and I are looking forward to attending the awards ceremony on September the 26th…in such strong competition who knows the final outcome, but it has been an honour to have progressed to the final 4!”

Scorching sales for cooling vests as Europe hots up

Premium dog gear brand Ruffwear is anticipating a boost in demand across Europe for its cooling gear which is designed to keep dogs cool while not missing out on being outdoors...

Premium dog gear brand Ruffwear is anticipating a boost in demand across Europe for its cooling gear which is designed to keep dogs cool while not missing out on being outdoors.

With more and more people keen to take their dogs with them wherever they go and record summer temperatures, by August last year, Ruffwear had completely sold out of cooling products.

And with temperatures across Europe soaring, they are anticipating a similar uplift this year.

Ruffwear’s advice to keep your dog cool and active may sound counter intuitive but the science behind it makes sense.

“It only takes a small increase in temperatures for dogs to overheat so keeping your dog cool and hydrated when out and about in the sun is so important” said Accapi Group Managing Director, Rob Hughes.

“Our cooling jackets - the Swamp Cooler, our original cooling vest, and Jet Stream Cooling Vest - use the process of evaporative cooling as a fast and effective way of keeping your dog cool.

"Because of the way dogs regulate their body temperature, both jackets provide your dog with welcome shelter from the sun while keeping them cool. To activate all the owner needs to do is soak the jackets in water, wring out, zip up and go.

“Dogs also need water, and lots of it, especially in the hot weather so we encourage all dog owners to take a bowl with them everywhere they go. Accessories like the Ruffwear Quencher Clinch Top or Trail Runner Bowl can make it easy to ensure your dog is getting a good, regular drink.”

Veterinary nurse Ami Sawran, whose dog Remy is a big fan of the Ruffwear Float Coat, has witnessed many incidents of overheating in dogs and encourages owners to be vigilant when it comes to pet sun safety, she said: “We have to be sensible about keeping our dogs safe in the heat, so make sure to plan in advance.

It’s extremely important for dog owners to understand the severity of dogs overheating and recognise the signs in order to prevent this from happening. All dog breeds are vulnerable to the heat, so it’s also vital to be educated in knowing what to do in the instance and what course of action to take.”
