Protect dogs from lurking threat of lungworm

The threat of lungworm will most likely be one that dog owners are well aware of. It is potentially deadly to dogs and is found across much of the UK. According to pet health specialist my pet and i,  new cases are now being reported across parts of the country that have never seen it before.

Dogs can become infected with lungworm when they eat slugs that carry lungworm larvae, and even if they ingest some of the slug’s slime trail. Once swallowed, the larvae can go on to travel to the dog’s heart where they develop into adult lungworms.

As the average British garden can contain up to 15,000 slugs, this is a huge risk for dogs when they are enjoying time outside in the summer.  With changeable summer weather often shifting from warm to wet, that number of slugs is likely to increase, according to BASF, the company which produces Nemaslug, an organically compatible form of slug control.

The most effective way of dealing with the risk is to remove slugs from your garden, and the best way to do this without risking harm to your pets, – other than hand collecting them – is using nematodes.

Nematodes are microscopic, worm-like creatures that occur naturally in garden soil.  Specific varieties seek out different prey species.  Nemaslug is the UK’s brand-leading nematode-based slug control product.  It is simply mixed with water and poured around plants using a watering can or hose feed.

This small but powerful box of fresh nematodes can be delivered directly to a dog owner’s doors throughout the slug season to ensure that they can be controlled effectively and continuously.
