Premium dog gear brand Ruffwear is anticipating a boost in demand across Europe for its cooling gear which is designed to keep dogs cool while not missing out on being outdoors.
With more and more people keen to take their dogs with them wherever they go and record summer temperatures, by August last year, Ruffwear had completely sold out of cooling products.
And with temperatures across Europe soaring, they are anticipating a similar uplift this year.
Ruffwear’s advice to keep your dog cool and active may sound counter intuitive but the science behind it makes sense.
“It only takes a small increase in temperatures for dogs to overheat so keeping your dog cool and hydrated when out and about in the sun is so important” said Accapi Group Managing Director, Rob Hughes.
“Our cooling jackets - the Swamp Cooler, our original cooling vest, and Jet Stream Cooling Vest - use the process of evaporative cooling as a fast and effective way of keeping your dog cool.
"Because of the way dogs regulate their body temperature, both jackets provide your dog with welcome shelter from the sun while keeping them cool. To activate all the owner needs to do is soak the jackets in water, wring out, zip up and go.
“Dogs also need water, and lots of it, especially in the hot weather so we encourage all dog owners to take a bowl with them everywhere they go. Accessories like the Ruffwear Quencher Clinch Top or Trail Runner Bowl can make it easy to ensure your dog is getting a good, regular drink.”
Veterinary nurse Ami Sawran, whose dog Remy is a big fan of the Ruffwear Float Coat, has witnessed many incidents of overheating in dogs and encourages owners to be vigilant when it comes to pet sun safety, she said: “We have to be sensible about keeping our dogs safe in the heat, so make sure to plan in advance.
It’s extremely important for dog owners to understand the severity of dogs overheating and recognise the signs in order to prevent this from happening. All dog breeds are vulnerable to the heat, so it’s also vital to be educated in knowing what to do in the instance and what course of action to take.”

The Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association held an event at the House of Commons to raise awareness of pet obesity and launch the third edition of its Pet Obesity Report: Pet Obesity – Ten Years On (2009-2019).
The event was hosted by Giles Watling MP on behalf of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW).
Canine guests at the event included representatives from Pets As Therapy (PAT), Therapaws (ran by Mayhew), Hounds for Heroes (who provide dogs to help war heroes with their rehabilitation and the Met Police dogs that do the security around Westminster.
Michael Bellingham, PFMA Chief Executive, advised: “We held this important event to raise awareness of pet obesity, which is a life-limiting condition. Pet experts Paws provide the definitive guide on where to travel with your dog this summer, along with tips on how to keep them safe.
With summer in full swing, many Brits will be looking at how they can get away and enjoy the sunshine. With 12 million Brits estimated to be owning pets, many of these will be wondering how they can take their furry friends on holiday with them.
Travelling with man's best friend is on the rise. In 2017, it was found that 287,000 dogs travelled abroad with their owners, a figure which has doubled since 2012. However, travelling with pets is no simple task. Another study found that 76% of dogs returning to the UK were carrying ticks.
Pet specialists, Paws, provide insight into the best places for your pooch to holiday with you:
- Dalmatia - Where best to start than the place that gave its name to the dalmatian. The Croatian region has plenty of dog-friendly accommodation and there are a variety of walks and beaches to let your pooch loose on.
- Paris - Why not take your dog to the famous city of love? There are plenty of parks to take your dogs for walks on and the capital has more than 1000 dog friendly hotels, establishments and apartments.
- Cornwall - You don't have to go abroad to go on holiday. Why not get in the car and take your dog to England's idyllic coast. Cornwall is packed with beautiful scenery and is full of beaches and forests for your dog to explore.
- Wallonia - In Belgium's Wallonia, you can find over 1300 pet friendly hotels and some beautiful medieval sites for you and your furry friend to explore.
- The Lake District - The beautiful national park is a great place to go exploring with your dog. Hike around the hills, take in the beautiful sites and enjoy the views whilst throwing sticks for your dog to catch.
Dog expert and Vet at pet specialists Paws, Steph Wenban, provides the following six tips for when travelling with your dog.
- Keep your dog cool - Dogs cool themselves by panting and evaporation. In high humidity this is less effective making your dog susceptible to heat stroke. In these conditions, shade is not enough so try and seek out somewhere with ample air conditioning.
- Read up on local parasites before you travel - For example, The Lake District will have high numbers of of ticks between March and November which can cause Lyme disease. European countries such as Spain and Portugal have sandflies, which can spread Leishmania, a blood borne parasite. Check with your vet if you need to alter your regular worm or flea prevention methods.
- Keep as much routine as possible - New places and long journeys can be unsettling for dogs. Try to keep some routine like usual walk times and pack some home comforts such as your dog's bedding.
- Print out your pet's most recent medical history - This is especially needed if your pet has any ongoing medications or illnesses. This information should never be needed, but it is useful to have to hand in an emergency.
- Take lots of breaks on long journeys - Give your dog plenty of opportunities to go to the toilet and stretch their legs. If stopping at a service station, make sure that your dog is on a short lead as there is usually a lot of fast moving traffic.
- Pack suncream - If your pet has any white fur and pink skin, for example on their nose or the tip of their ears then use suncream to prevent burning. Normal suncream will work as long as it doesn't contain zinc oxide (which can be poisonous to dogs if eaten), but you can also buy dog specific suncream.

Poppy’s Picnic adds new Pheasant BITES to TASTY Treats Range
Poppy’s Picnic launches its new TASTY Pheasant Bites, the latest addition to its air-dried TASTY Treats range. Poppy’s Picnic launches its new TASTY Pheasant Bites, the latest addition to its air-dried TASTY Treats range. The 100% pure protein bites are perfect for all dogs, including those with grain intolerances and sensitive stomachs, and are a good source of B vitamins, iron and other essential minerals and amino acids.
Poppy’s Picnic Pheasant Bites are naturally low-fat and made in the UK. The new dog treats are tasty little morsels of air-dried pheasant breast fillet, and weigh in at 60g per pack. They are gluten free and hypoallergenic, making them suitable for dogs with food intolerances.
Dylan Watkins, founder of Poppy’s Picnic, discusses the new bites: “Many dog owners face the issue of feeding their dog a selective diet due to food intolerances. These can often be triggered by the fillers and grains that are unnecessarily added to many processed pet foods and treats. Our new bites are 100% pure air-dried pheasant breast with no hidden nasties. They provide a high protein treat and a natural source of collagen, whilst being low in calories.”
Treats should always be accounted for as part of a dog’s daily food allowance and should only amount to approximately 15% of their diet. The size of the bites can be adjusted based on the size of the dog. If the dog is smaller in size, the treats can be modified by being cut into smaller pieces so they are easier to consume.
The TASTY Pheasant Bites join the wider TASTY range of air-dried treats which also includes: Dried Ox Heart Bites, Dried Venison Bites, Dried Liver Bites, Dragon Skin Bites and more. Each of these treats are made from 100% dried meat, and contain no added preservatives or fillers of any kind.
Poppy’s Picnic aims to make feeding a raw food diet easier. Its ranges of fresh, raw Mince and exclusive Meatballs are easy-to-feed to dogs of all breeds and sizes, whether you want to make a complete switch to raw feeding or add an occasional boost of freshness to wet or dry food. The all-natural meals contain ingredients such as fresh raw meat, garden-fresh vegetables and ground bone. No weird ingredients you don’t recognise, no chemical flavourings, no grains, fillers, or artificial additives – just natural dog food, freshly prepared for your convenience.
Poppy’s Picnic TASTY treats fit perfectly into the diet and are prepared in the most natural way possible. The all-new Poppy’s Picnic Pheasant Bites are simply 100% dried breast fillet slices and nothing else.

Homeland By Products Ltd is recalling three batches of frozen raw pet food because salmonella has been found in the products.
The affected products were: Frozen Raw Beef, Frozen Raw Turkey and Frozen Raw Tripe.
The Food Standards Agency announced the recall on its website. In its risk statement the FSA said:
“Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk, because of the presence of salmonella, either through direct handling of the pet food, or indirectly, for example from pet feeding bowls, utensils or contact with the faeces of animals.
“In humans, symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhoea.”
And in its advice to customers, the agency added: “If you have bought any of the above products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.
“When handling and serving raw pet food it is always advised to clean utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food, bowls, utensils or after contact with the faeces of infected animals.
“Raw pet food should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces.”

Actress Gemma Atkinson was just one of the celebrities who visited the Billy + Margot stand during the Dogfest shows at Knebworth, Tatton Park and Ashton Court, Bristol.
Billy + Margot were sponsors of the ‘Fun Dog Show’ at all three shows, and shared a show stand with Benyfit Natural for each event (as they now both sit under the ‘RPFC Group’).
Both Greg Van Praagh and Marie Jones were judges for the Fun Dog Show.
Greg Van Praagh, Lead UK Operations & Frozen R&D, Benyfit Natural, said: “Dogfest was a really successful show for both RPFC Group brands - Benyfit Natural, and Billy + Margot. We had a great presence across all three weekends of the whow, even taking part in the Fun Dog Show judging!
“We really valued meeting customers, receiving their feedback and talking to them about their dogs. It also gave us the opportunity to talk to new customers, and tell them about the range of products from both Benyfit Natural and Billy + Margot - from raw through to dry, wet and treats – and pointing them to their local retailers. It’s been a great way to connect with people.”

Forthglade, the award-winning natural pet food brand, has increased sales by 21% for the year ended 30 September 2018 in accounts soon to be filed at Companies House.
Established in 1971 and based in Okehampton, Devon, the company’s turnover rose to £16.8m (2017 13.9m), driven by further growth of the Forthglade brand, with increases in all sales channels and product ranges. Its three new ranges (gourmet wet meals, cold pressed natural dry food and grain-free treats) performed particularly well, contributing more than a quarter of sales growth. Last year, the company supplied more than 40 million tasty natural meals.
Forthglade’s Joint MDs Chris Brooking and Gerard Lovell, both with a background in food production, took over the once struggling business in 2011.
Together with specialist consumer brands investor Piper (which invested £6m into Forthglade in 2015), Santander Growth Capital (who funded £5m towards the new factory) and chairman Peter Farquhar, they have transformed the brand, increasing production fourfold and creating an additional 71 local jobs.
Today Forthglade’s 100% natural dog food can be found in all the main supermarkets, as well as UK pet shops and online. Forthglade is currently sold in 11 countries worldwide, with successful recent launches in Italy, Spain and Finland.
In September 2018, the brand relocated to a purpose-built 70,000 sq ft factory next to Dartmoor National Park. The new factory significantly increases production capacity and sales for the first six months of operations are already up by 24% on the same period last year. The brand is also set to increase its 130-strong local production team to 150 staff over the coming years.
Said Gerard Lovell, Joint MD of Forthglade: ‘We’re delighted by another strong year of growth and particularly excited for the future now that we’ve begun settling into our new Okehampton home. We’ve already had a fantastic start and look forward to continued and sustained growth as we bring Forthglade’s premium natural meals and treats to dogs and families in the UK and beyond.’
