Pet treat firm Huxley Hound receives Dragons’ Den offer

The owners of pet treat company Huxley Hound have appeared on the hit BBC2 show Dragons’ Den, receiving a £50,000 offer from new Dragon Jenny Campbell...

The owners of pet treat company Huxley Hound have appeared on the hit BBC2 show Dragons’ Den, receiving a £50,000 offer from new Dragon Jenny Campbell.

Mike and Zena Deane received two offers when they appeared in the Den but decided on Jenny’s bid in return for 15% equity in their company. The couple had early asked for £50,000 in return for 5% of the business.

According to co-founder Zena Deane: “Even though Mike and I have always known that we were onto something rather special, to receive glowing tributes from such business savvy Dragons is not only reassuring but worth its weight in gold. Indeed, since we first aired we’ve been bagging a fresh order every six minutes.”

It’s not even a year since Huxley Hound tentatively took to the national PATS stage to promote its pioneering portfolio of ‘nutritiously dense’ organic veggie treats.

A few months on and Huxley Hound has made significant strides within the realm of health conscious dog treats – no mean feat when your iconic brand ambassador is a vertically-challenged dachshund with small feet.

This September Huxley Hound proudly unveils its new vibrant packaging (courtesy of We Launch), hot on the heels of a fruitful cameo on Dragon’s Den, where Jenny Campbell and Tej Levlani  warmed to Huxley’s veg-friendly pet treat vision, with both making offers of investment.

Huxley Hound is a young, family-owned business seeking to bring some low fat nutritional vitality to a UK pet treat arena too often dogged by bland, ‘nutritionally bleak,’ synthetic treats.

Using only fully traceable, best-in-class organic veg, (Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Beetroot & Parsnips) Huxley Hound has unearthed a dehydration formula that politely nudges the veggie’s essential minerals and vitamins to the surface of the veggie treats so that even a canine’s belligerent anatomy can fully ingest them.

Zena added: “We’re not trying to turn committed carnivores into reluctant vegetarians, we’re simply advocating, that in a world where 1 in 3 UK dogs is now deemed clinically obese that any well-balanced doggie diet should encompass an accessible and affordable veggie fix.”

Available online www.huxleyhound.com and with blossoming nationwide availability through Fetch & Natural Pet Product Products PLUS a blossoming number of high end independent pet stores and health food outlets Huxley Hound treats are well & truly on the move.

It’s also worth noting that Huxley Hound are proud purveyors of universally respected Vegan & Vegetarian Society trademarks and are inextricably linked to the laudable Dogs on the Streets cause which recognises the all-important well-being of those noble, four-legged companions that live on the streets with their homeless human companions.

If you missed the edition of Dragons’ Den featuring Huxley Hound you can watch it on iPlayer. Here’s the link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b093syc3/dragons-den-series-15-episode-2

Fast forward to 15.50 minutes to see the start of the Huxley Hound presentation.

Over 300 pet brands on show at PATS Telford

Hundreds of pet companies have confirmed there is only one place to be this September…and that’s exhibiting at PATS Telford. The showpiece event, taking place on Sunday, September 24, and Monday, September 25, will be packed solid with over 300 leading brands eager to exhibit their products and services to visiting UK and international buyers.

The mood amongst the exhibitors is one of eager anticipation as the biggest-ever PATS Telford moves closer.

Peter Roy, of Natures Menu, summed up the level of excitement by saying: “I’m hoping this PATS, with all the new product and brand development we can showcase, will exceed all previous years. It will be well worth all pet specialist stores coming to see what we are launching this year.

““Over the past five years PATS has been an excellent show for business-to-business trade for Natures Menu, placing over 100 freezers in the UK pet trade each show. When deciding when to launch our new brand to the UK market it was a natural decision to launch at PATS, for the exposure and the quality of the business-to-business footfall we experience.”

Katie Goldsmith, of Collarways, said: "PATS gives us the opportunity to showcase our currant ranges and launch new products in a most effective way. We love talking to our customers and showing off the brands we represent.”

And Steve Bolton, of Pettex, remarked: “We regard PATS as the key event to showcase what’s new to both new and existing customers. It’s also an important event for us to see which way new trends are developing within the industry.”

Suzanne Rothman, of Pet Munchies, said: “PATS TELFORD is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our extensive range of varieties to many different buyers,” and Laura Redstone, of All Dogkind, commented: “We are excited to officially launch our new Daily Scent Spray at PATS Telford. We have created a fabulous new stand design, which we hope will add a bit of excitement and fun - just follow the bubbles to B51.”

Innocent Hound is a new exhibitor at PATS and Chloe Heaton explained why her company had chosen to take a stand at the Telford show. “Having recently developed an exciting range of functional treats, we are keen to showcase our products to both UK and international buyers. It is our first time exhibiting at PATS and we believe it is the ideal place for us to do this.”

There will be so much for visitors to see and do at the two-day exhibition. One of the major successes at PATS shows over the years has been the New Product Showcase. Last year at Telford a record number new products – over 300 in total – were on show in the designated area. All the products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers on the first day of the show,

For the first time the New Product Awards will be presented at the PetQuip Awards Dinner, which will be held in Telford International Centre’s Ludlow Suite on the Sunday evening.

As well as seeing an unrivalled array of new pet products and speaking to top suppliers and manufacturers, visitors will also be able to listen to talks from prominent industry figures and witness demonstrations from the country’s leading dog groomers.

The grooming programme, in association with British Dog Groomers' Association and KD Grooming Studio, will include some of the country’s leading groomers. The demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required to successfully complete all traditional grooming techniques, and will show off a few creative twists and turns as well.

“Myself and the other members of BDGA are really looking forward to delivering two days of interactive demos/seminars at PATS Telford this year,”

said Kelly Davis, Director for BDGA.

“This exhibition is one of the most enjoyable events out there. A welcoming environment with new products, free samples and an opportunity to network and learn is always a great day out in my book.”

Parking is free at the Telford International Centre, and everyone will receive free tea and coffee, and a free show catalogue.

PATS Telford is definitely THE place to be this September so make sure you register for free entry to the show at www.patshow.co.uk where you’ll also find a full list of exhibitors visit.

PDSA to treat 1 pet per household for free instead of 3
Veterionary charity PDSA has been criticised for changing the rules on how many pets it will treat for free – one pet per eligible household instead of three.
Veterionary charity PDSA has been criticised for changing the rules on how many pets it will treat for free – one pet per eligible household instead of three.

Pensioner Barry Seckerson, has two cats, told the The Sentinel in Sotke-on-Trent: “My worry is that if I take one of my cats down to the PDSA when it is ill, and then the other one comes down with something, I won’t be to afford it. I can see people having to go to a private vet and that will cost a bomb."

The PDSA states on its website:

"When people struggle economically, we are the safety net that ensures their pets are cared for. Since 2008, demand for our services has soared by around 50%. In that time, instead of cutting services we have been using our charity reserves to meet the unprecedented demand.

"Nearly a decade on, we have reviewed our operations to identify the most efficient way to achieve our charitable aims of preventing illness, educating pet owners and treating sick animals with our available funds.

"Our 48 Pet Hospitals continue to be the most sustainable, cost-effective and impactful way for us to deliver pet wellbeing. Going forward, we will be providing free care through our hospital network for one pet per eligible household, reduced from the current three. Clients with more than one pet will still be able to access PDSA care for their pets through our reduced-cost charitable service. Those with pets already registered with us, requiring long-term care (for conditions such as diabetes or heart disease), will still be supported.

"Furthermore, the Pet Treatment Fund will be withdrawn (a service that provides a discretionary contribution towards a pet’s treatment for clients that fall outside of PDSA’s catchment areas). This service model is small, supporting around 4,000 of the 430,000 pets PDSA helps annually.

"We are also continuing to review the Pet Practice Scheme (a service funded by PDSA, but delivered via private vet practices) and are working closely with practices to explore if any other financially viable alternatives to the current scheme exist. This review is due for completion later this year but for now, this service will continue as normal.

"By reviewing and reshaping our services, which is something PDSA has always done over the past 100 years, we can continue to help millions of pets in need, long into the future in a sustainable and affordable way.

"As a charity, we are funded entirely by public support. We don’t get any Government funding, it costs £60 million to run our services every year and we rely on the generosity of our supporters to help keep our services running."

Pooch & Mutt donates over 9,000 meals to charity

As part of Pooch & Mutt’s mission to help all dogs lead happy, healthy lives, the company has recently donated over 9,000 meals of their complete, grain-free food to a host of UK charities...

As part of Pooch & Mutt’s mission to help all dogs lead happy, healthy lives, the company has recently donated over 9,000 meals of their complete, grain-free food to a host of UK charities.

Commenting on the donations, founder Guy Blaskey says; “We’re a relatively small company compared to some of the bigger brands, but we still want to give back. A lot of these charities rely solely on volunteers and donations to be able to run and function properly.

"Without people and companies like us offering support, they would struggle to help as many animals as they do."

Recent donations aside, Pooch & Mutt gives back on a regular basis. For every pack of its popular tube treat “Feel Good Chicken” sold, the company donates a meal to a rescue dog.

This summer’s donation has involved charities big and small, including The Staffordshire Rescue Scotland, Monty’s Rescue, Labrador Lifeline Trust, The Manchester Dogs Home, The Siberian Husky Welfare Association UK, Dogs On The Street London, and the Blue Cross.

Pooch & Mutt have also recently donated to Birmingham based charity The Animal House Rescue, to support them with fundraising efforts. They will also be supporting an event organised by St Ann’s Hospice in Manchester – who care for around 3,00 patients, families, and carers every year. October 8th will see their “Paws” sponsored dog walk and dog show take place at Heaton Park in Manchester, where Pooch & Mutt will be donating a selection of samples and raffle prizes for participants.

Unlike brands that only work with large, well-known charities, with each sale of “Feel Good Chicken”, Pooch & Mutt donates meals to rescue dogs from those that are well-known, and more importantly, those that are lesser-known. The company also invites customers to suggest new charities to donate to.
New benefits for OATA members to launch at AQUA 2017

The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association is launching a new range of member benefits at AQUA 2017 being held at the Telford International Centre in October.

The improved benefits include a free telephone hotline for issues from HR and health and safety to tax, VAT and legal issues. There is also a huge library of documents that will be available to OATA members to help them find the answers to common issues.

The new range of benefits will be available both to businesses which join at the Show and to current members. OATA will also have special show only offers on discounted membership and training at AQUA 2017.

“We’re very pleased to add this new range of benefits to OATA members,” said Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee.

“Very often small to medium sized businesses – as the majority of our members are – do not have the expertise in-house to help them when problems bubble up. This new range of benefits will help our members to have free expertise in one place to research the key issues they may encounter in the day-to-day running of their business, from HR and employment matters, to legal, health & safety, tax and VAT issues.

“There’s a free helpline to ring to speak to a specialist for advice on more difficult problems and a huge online document library to help them research answers as well. I believe it will help people manage their business in a proactive way, both in a crisis when they need answers fast and to do online research on one website that has gathered all the information they will probably need in one place.”

Also on offer will be free HR and health and safety healthchecks to help businesses make sure they are complying with the law as well as downloadable templates for companies to use to show they have the right procedures in place.

The new range of benefits join those currently on offer to all OATA members, including discounts on OATA’s aquatic-related training packages for staff and a free insurance audit to ensure businesses have the right cover. Membership of OATA also supports the trade association’s important lobbying work, promoting and protecting the trade and enhancing the reputation of the industry, especially with government and regulatory authorities.

Businesses can find out more about the new benefits at the OATA stand (F61) at AQUA2017, being held between 18 and 19 October, or by visiting http://ornamentalfish.org/join-us/.

Natures Menu highlights importance of responsible puppy ownership

Natures Menu has been highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and nutrition at a number of puppy graduation classes across the UK during Puppy Awareness Week...

Natures Menu has been highlighting the importance of responsible pet ownership and nutrition at a number of puppy graduation classes across the UK during Puppy Awareness Week.

Puppy Awareness Week is a Kennel Club initiative which aims to make sure that puppies live healthy, happy lives by spreading the 'be puppy aware' message.

To mark this week, Natures Menu has been rewarding puppy graduates with  nutritious treats and offering advice to puppy parents on responsible raw feeding and how to provide a complete and balanced diet as they grow into dog-hood.

The groups of puppies and their owners have spent the last 12 weeks learning obedience, socialising and learning all about nutrition.

Craig Taylor, Managing Director at Natures Menu said: “Congratulations to everyone graduating from Puppy Schools across the UK - a fantastic initiative which highlights the importance of responsible puppy ownership and nutrition.

"Taking on a new puppy can be a busy and exciting time and with everything else you have to look at, researching the right diet can feel like information overload! At Natures Menu we like to keep it simple and wholesome with a range of raw and natural dog foods that are perfect for puppies and super gentle on little tums.

“With the help of our team of vets we have put together a feeding guide on weaning puppies onto the raw diet and through our sponsorship of Puppy School we are working towards educating new puppy owners on the benefits of natural and raw feeding.”

Gwen  Bailey, Founder of Puppy School said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating the graduation of some of our amazing classes of 2017 – they’ve achieved so much in just 6 weeks and are a credit to the tutors  and the puppies owners who have worked so hard. We look forward to hearing how they progress after their graduation.

“Working with Natures Menu has enabled us to inform and educate puppy parents on the importance of nutrition and the benefits of raw feeding. I’ve personally seen some amazing results in some puppies and adults when they switch to raw and I’m a complete convert myself after feeding this to my previous dogs and now my new puppy.  They do so well on it that I, personally, wouldn’t feed anything else now.”

Natures Menu has been creating 100% real wholesome food for pets for over 35 years, and became an official sponsor of Puppy School in 2016 to offer a range of benefits to clients joining puppy classes, including a free advice manual, free treat samples and a voucher for clients to spend on Natures Menu products.

To find out more about feeding your puppy the natural way, visit www.naturesmenu.co.uk or ask your Puppy School tutor for more information.

Fish4Dogs helps pet owners boost training knowledge
It’s back to school time and Fish4Dogs is helping pet parents boost their training knowledge with a series of bite-sized training exercises for puppies and young dogs...

It’s back to school time and Fish4Dogs is helping pet parents boost their training knowledge with a series of bite-sized training exercises for puppies and young dogs.

Dog trainer Tima Lund (above) uses positive-based clicker training to reinforce a puppy’s directed behaviour and reward it with treats.

The first of the series, which can be seen on Fish4Dogs’ social media channels, Tima shows how to encourage a puppy to stay on a given spot.

She uses a board which she places in the middle of a mat to train Karma a four-and-a half month cocker spaniel.

Tima ignores unwanted behaviour and stares at the board until the puppy focuses her attention on it. The progress is incremental - when the dog begins to pay attention to the object she clicks and rewards. The pup quickly learns that the board is pivotal to the game and progresses to touching and putting her feet on the board and eventually, standing on it with all four paws.

“The game we play is called ‘what makes mummy click’. All my puppies are clicker trained – they know that they have to keep trying to find out what makes me click. The click is a promise, as soon as I click, food is given,” says Tima.

Tima, who is based in Berkshire, runs Folkvang, a small kennel breeding German Shepherds and working cocker spaniels.

She is highly qualified with a BSc BEng PGCE and an extensive background in dog training, a former trainer for Company of Animals and experienced gundog who currently assists West Berkshire gundog Club with its beginner classes.

In the video, she uses Fish4Dogs Salmon Mouse, mixed with egg and potato or rice flour, which is baked to produce small moist treats which can be consumed by the puppy quickly during the training session.

Two other training videos will be posted during the month – “In the Box” and “How to Clicker Train” which demonstrates the approach to use with introducing a new activity.

Naturediet Pet Foods is investing in further resource to their sales and marketing teams to support the company’s new business development strategy.

The Norfolk based pet food manufacturer has appointed Georgina Child as Territory Sales Executive, a new role for the business that has been created to support and grow relationships with independent retailers across the North of the UK.

She will be joined by an additional sales representative for Naturediet in the South, as well as a Sales Administrator and Marketing Assistant who the company are currently recruiting for.

Naturediet has invested heavily in production improvements at their manufacturing plant, which resulted in them launching 31 new SKUs at the end of 2016. These included a new range of Grain Free wet food meals, a new premium dry food range and semi moist treats to complement their traditional wet food offering.

The new positions follow shortly on from the appointments of Aaron Burton as Business Development Manager and Emily Cannon as Head of Marketing.

Woman convicted of animal cruelty after she left rabbit to starve to death
A woman who left a pet rabbit to starve to death in its cage has been found guilty of animal cruelty...
A woman who left a pet rabbit to starve to death in its cage has been found guilty of animal cruelty.

Rebecca Jefferies, 28, of Ember Road, Salcombe, has been disqualified from keeping small caged animals for two years.

Jefferies was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and fined £400, plus a £85 victim surcharge, when she appeared before the magistrates in Plymouth.

The emaciated body of the rabbit, known as Fudge, was seen dead in his hutch by a neighbour who contacted the animal welfare charity to raise their concerns.

RSPCA inspector Claire Ryder, who investigated, said: “It’s unacceptably cruel to leave an animal to die a slow and painful death in a cage without the care they need to survive.
This rabbit was completely reliant on Rebecca Jefferies and she choose to simply leave him to die.”

The court found that Jefferies had caused unnecessary suffering by failing to provide food, contrary to Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The rabbit had also not been provided with basic means to survive, nor kept in appropriate conditions, contrary to Section 9 of the animal Welfare Act 2006.

Inspector Ryder encouraged anyone thinking of getting pet rabbits to carefully research what is needed to ensure they are cared for correctly before making the commitment.

She said: “Many people do not realise how complex rabbits can be to care for, and we see many come into our centres after owners have not provided them with what they need to be kept happy and healthy.

“Owning and caring for rabbits can be great fun and very rewarding, but it’s a big responsibility and a long-term commitment in terms of care and cost.

“We urge anyone thinking of taking on rabbits that they do thorough research about how they need to look after them first and ensure they are able to meet all their welfare needs throughout their lives.”

Lily’s Kitchen is set to invest in media worth £1.5 million in its first ever above the line campaign, to further drive brand awareness and brand love, from September 2017.

‘It’s not loopy, it’s love’ is a playful celebration of all things we do out of love for our pets.

The 360 degree campaign - which includes outdoor, print, digital and PR - will lift the lid on family behaviours only pet owners understand, from eating Sunday Lunch together and choosing only dog friendly restaurants to eat in, to being slaves to our cats, whether that’s serving breakfast at 4am or sacrificing our furniture for theirs.

“We’re hugely excited to unveil our first ever brand campaign to pet parents and our retail partners.” says Henrietta Morrison, CEO and founder of Lily’s Kitchen.  “Lily’s Kitchen celebrates the joy of being a pet parent giving people the freedom to say: It’s not loopy, it’s love.

“It’s a campaign message that underpins everything we do at Lily’s Kitchen – placing pets, people and the planet at the heart of our brand, and supports our belief that pets are family and deserve proper food. We’ll be working with our retail partners to extend it’s not loopy, it’s love to their customers in store too with tailored point of sale.”

Online publisher BioMed Central has announced that Eukanuba’s peer reviewed longevity article was one of the most influential articles of 2016 in the well-known journal Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica, according to Altmetric, an independent tracking system.

For Eukanuba, the journey began back in July 2004 when it embarked on a ten-year observation involving 39 very special Labradors. Their health and longevity were monitored and the results were unprecedented – nearly 90%1 of Labrador Retrievers fed Eukanuba, together with appropriate care, lived beyond the breed’s typical twelve-year life expectancy. Even more astonishingly - almost a third (28%) of the dogs achieved exceptional longevity by living beyond an incredible 15.6 years2. One dog, Utah, lived until the ripe old age of 17 years and 11 months. That’s the equivalent of approximately 109 years in human terms.

The study’s ‘Longevity Council’3, a panel of internationally renowned veterinarians and industry experts, agreed that the unparalleled results demonstrated and redefined what successful ageing in dogs can look like. These experts represent opinions from fields across veterinary medicine including orthopaedics, genetics and nutrition.

In May 2016, Eukanuba and the Longevity Council published their first set of results in Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica for the public to download or read online at BioMed Central which has now been announced as one of the top five most influential articles of 2016.

David M. Morgan, Eukanuba Scientific Communications Senior Manager at Eukanuba comments, “It’s fantastic to see the longevity observation has been so well received. Nutrition is vitally important to ensure a dog is healthy but so is good husbandry and veterinary care. You need all three to help dogs live a long and quality life which they can enjoy actively with their owner.”
