New pet nutrition brand sells out in three weeks

Fettle, an innovative brand in the natural pet supplement space, has made an extraordinary market debut. Selling out within three weeks of its launch, it has captured the attention of the industry and pet owners alike.

Dozens of stockists are lining up each day to offer Fettle’s premium products.

“From day one, our mission at Fettle was to show just how simple yet tasty pet nutrition should be,” said co-founder Taylor Gathercole. “We saw a gap in the market for truly natural, whole food-based supplements. Our rapid sell-out is a clear indication that pet owners are seeking healthier, more transparent options for their furry family members.”

Fettle’s supplements, including the popular Goat's Milk Powder and the soon-to-launch Seaweed Kelp Powder, are crafted with no more than five whole food ingredients.

“We’re not just creating supplements; we’re setting new standards for pet health,” added Taylor. “Our rigorous sourcing and testing protocols ensure that only the purest, most nutritious ingredients make it into our products.”

Anticipation is high for Fettle’s restock and product expansion, which is due next week.

"The overwhelming demand we’ve seen is both humbling and exhilarating. It validates our belief that pet owners are ready for a change – a shift towards natural, effective supplements that pets love.”

Fettle extends an invitation to stockists who share their vision for a healthier pet world.

“Together, we can make a significant impact on pet wellness,” concluded Taylor, who co-founded Fettle with Alex Taylor-Grout.

UK pet industry energised by THREE-DAY PATS 2024

News that PATS will be a THREE-DAY exhibition in 2024 has delighted UK pet companies eager to showcase their new products to a wider audience...

News that PATS will be a THREE-DAY exhibition in 2024 has delighted UK pet companies eager to showcase their new products to a wider audience.

PATS 2024, to be staged from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October 2024, will become one all-encompassing show as the two PATS exhibitions – Sandown and Telford – merge into one.

The 2024 exhibition will take over the entire Telford International Centre, giving the organisers the ability to accommodate more than 400 exhibitors, compared to this year’s record number of 256.

The decision to stage a three day show in the Autumn gives suppliers and manufacturers the opportunity to showcase new products over a longer period, and to a larger audience. PATS 2024 will also increase its international profile with the benefit of overseas suppliers and buyers being attracted by the three-day format.

Pedigree Wholesale is one company that has supported PATS exhibitions over the years and is looking forward to the new-look format. The company’s head of buying Melanie Malin said: “We are really excited about PATS being a three-day show in 2024. We feel it’s a positive move that allows us to focus on representing the best version of Pedigree Wholesale. We hope the bigger central show allows more customers to be able to visit over the three days. It also means our buying team can spend much more time engaging with our current suppliers and gives more opportunity to understand the exciting new products on offer.”

Ancol is another major company welcoming the new plans. Director Simon Lane commented: “We always look forward to exhibiting at PATS. We always have a great show –lots of hands shaken and orders taken – but it’s always over far too quickly. We value the chance to show our products at PATS and we invest a lot of time and effort into looking our best on the day. We are very pleased that we’ll get an extra day to exhibit – in our opinion extra show time is a huge benefit for us.”

Cranswick Pet Products has already booked its stand for PATS 2024 and head of marketing Jerry Lowe said: “The team are really looking forward to the new three-day format. We had a great show with our Vitalin and Alpha brands this year, meeting so many customers, old and new, and it was a great place to showcase our re-designs and new recipes. Having an extra day next year is exciting and creates an opportunity to see everyone for longer.”

Rogz also had a very successful PATS in September and is excited by next year’s plans. “This event creates a real buzz in the UK pet industry, and I’m 100% behind the move to a three-day show,” said Sallie-Ann Reed, managing director for UK and Ireland.

The UK pet industry has seen a huge growth in the number of start-ups entering the market over recent years, and many of them have used PATS as their launchpad. This trend is set to continue in 2024 with the exciting PATS New Starter Zone, as well as more than 40 new companies already expressing an interest in exhibiting.

PATS organisers will be working closely with PetQuip to encourage an increasing number of international buyers to next year’s show. Travelling to and from Telford for overseas visitors is straightforward because of the close proximity of two of the UK’s largest international airports outside of London – Birmingham and Manchester.

The new three-day show will retain all its popular features:

  • New Product Showcase and Awards
  • New Starter Zone
  • Grooming Workshop
  • Deals and Discounts

There will be free entry for visitors, a free show catalogue, free parking for up to 1,500 cars and a complimentary tea/coffee voucher.

Redpaw Pet Supplies has launched a new website to support a growing demand for online sales. The Plymouth-based retailer originally had an online presence to promote its bricks and mortar outlet. However, over the years, demand for its natural pet products and nutritional consultancy services has drawn customers from much further afield.

The new site, www.redpawpets.co.uk, has been developed by specialist marketing and PR company, Tillymint Communications, which has put customer experience front and centre of the build.

It has vastly improved shop categorisation across 70 brands and 400 products which can be filtered using newly created product attributes such as flavour, health benefit, pet age and price. This allows the customer to filter through the ever-growing product ranges and apply attribute selections to hone down what they are looking for

There is also an improved look and feel across the site. Tillymint has refreshed the Redpaw corporate identity and developed a design style which has been applied consistently across the site. There is also digital mascot – Gracie, based on Sammie’s real-life canine companion, who triggered the quest to identify natural foods to support the whippet’s health problems.

Redpaw founder Sammie Hunt said: “We are delighted with our new website which is now clear and easy to navigate. Our old site had grown organically but was creaking under the ever-increasing number of products we’d added to it. It looked dated and hadn’t been built with categorisation in mind.

“Our new site provides our customers with clear sections based on animal type and life stage, which can then be filtered to product type, sub-categories such wet or dry foods and then filtered to find a particular brand, benefit or ingredient.

The site also has an extensive advice and info section to add value to the user experience and provide support to pet owners. This includes an ‘A to Z of Supplements, Natural Remedies, Herbs & More’.

Alison Gallagher-Hughes, Managing Director of Tillymint, added: “We are delighted to work with Sammie and play an active role in supporting Redpaw’s growth plans. Over the past year, the company has taken on bigger premises and now the brand’s online visibility is boosted too.

“Redpaw is already well-known in the South West for its expertise as a manufacturer and retailer of natural pet products. This website will extend its reach as a national independent retailer which will support its growth and secure its future.”

Animal abandonments hit THREE YEAR HIGH as RSPCA warns of ‘winter crisis’

Animal abandonment incidents have soared to a shocking three year high as the RSPCA warns that unwanted pets face a bleak winter.

The animal welfare charity has this week released startling new statistics that show abandonments have been spiralling amid the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Already this year, up to the end of October, the animal welfare charity has received 17,838 reports of abandoned animals - which, if such trends continue, would equate to 21,417 reports over 2023.

This compares with 16,118 reports during the whole of 2020, meaning the RSPCA is on course to see an eye-watering 32.9 percent rise in abandonment calls this year.

It’s higher too than the number of reports received in 2021 (17,179) and 2022 (19,645).

In October alone, 1,800 incidents of abandonment were reported to the RSPCA - higher than the number in that month in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Shockingly, the number of calls reported last month was 48.1% more than in October 2020 (1,215).

Abandonment incidents reported to the RSPCA, England and Wales

The charity fears the ongoing cost of living crisis - coupled with a surge in pet ownership during Covid-19 restrictions - has created a "perfect storm" for animal welfare emergencies, which has led to the shocking rise in abandoned pets.

Dermot Murphy, RSPCA inspectorate commissioner, said: “The combined effects of the pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis has created a perfect storm - and means we expect more animals than ever will need our help this year.

"Abandonment calls to our emergency line are now at a three-year high, as we respond to an increasing number of animals being given up and dumped.

“Behind these shocking statistics are thousands of vulnerable animals. Each one is a valuable life in urgent need of our help.

“We’re desperately concerned about the coming winter months - abandonments have soared and many rescue centres are full to bursting, so we are facing an unprecedented winter crisis.

“Our rescue teams are set to be busier than ever this Christmas - so we need animal lovers to Join the Christmas Rescue and donate to help us be there for animals in desperate need as abandonment soars.”

Now in a happy and loving home, mum and daughter, Sheila and Stella, are just two of the many abandoned animals who have had their lives transformed since they were rescued by the RSPCA in East Anglia.

The cats were found underweight and hungry, after being abandoned in filthy conditions with no food and water close to Christmas.

RSPCA inspector Amy Pellegrini said: “After the call came in I rushed to a flat to find four cats in desperate need of help. The scratches at the door and the loud noises the cats were making told me they were starving.

“It was clear no one had been visiting them to feed them. I pushed some pouches of cat food through the letterbox and they pounced on them in desperation. Thankfully, I was able to gain access and get the cats to safety, and with time, our prosecution team made sure their former owner was brought to justice.

“The rescue was just the beginning for Sheila and Stella. Once I’d removed them from the flat and given them a good meal, I took them to our RSPCA East Norfolk Branch. The search began to find them a new home and they soon met their perfect match.”

Adopted together, this mother and daughter pair now spend their time lounging on a bed, enjoying treats and endless fuss with their new owner. Two other cats, Tom and Barbra, were also found loving homes after their rescue.

Watch Shiela and Stella’s story on the RSPCA YouTube page here - warning this contains distressing footage.

Dermot added: “For nearly 200 years, the RSPCA has been working tirelessly to bring animals to safety and give them the expert treatment and compassion they deserve.

“We’ll continue to do so for as long as we’re needed but we can’t do that without the support of fellow animal lovers. Together, we could save more lives.

“The support of the public helps neglected and abandoned animals in so many ways - from buying soft, warm bedding and nourishing food for an animal who’s desperately cold and hungry, to funding vital vet care for an animal who is suffering and in pain.”

This year the RSPCA is asking supporters to Join the Christmas Rescue by donating to help rescue teams reach the thousands of animals who desperately need them.

Canine first aider in line for top national award

A qualified veterinary nurse from Grotton who travels the country teaching canine first aid has been nominated for a national award.

Rachel Bean, is the UK's leading canine first aider, and wrote the industry-leading iPET Network qualification in the subject.

And this dedication to making homes and pet services safer has been recognised at a high level, with Rachel reaching the finals of the Dog Friendly Awards 2023.

Rachel, who will get to know if she has won the award at a glitzy awards bash in the new year, said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this way.

"Life isn't all about awards and accolades, but things like this show that people are seeing the benefits of canine first aid, and that attitudes are heading in the right direction."

Rachel is an ambassador for the national Safe Pets and People campaign, which is calling for all pet professionals to have first aid training. She has also traveled to countries including India and Thailand to teach her skills, and learners have saved lives as a result.

Rachel added: "Having first aid training enables you to think clearly and calmly in a crisis, I regularly get feedback from people who have been on my courses that have said they saved their dog's life."

This includes Daily Star pet columnist Catherine Lamb, who undertook the Ofqual regulated iPET Network Canine First Aid qualification for a newspaper feature.

She said: "My dog Paisley was choking on a piece of cupcake, thanks to the course I knew exactly what to do and managed to get it out.

"The course may very well have saved her life, so it makes us even prouder to support Safe Pets and People."

More than a quarter of Brits fear that their dog will die whilst out walking

The UK’s growing litter problem is significantly impacting the way dog owners conduct their walks with over a quarter of owners (26%) fearful that their dog will die whilst out on their daily walk...

The UK’s growing litter problem is significantly impacting the way dog owners conduct their walks with over a quarter of owners (26%) fearful that their dog will die whilst out on their daily walk.

A third (32%) of owners worry that their dog will come to serious harm, whilst 29% admit to changing their routes to avoid litter and a further 29% refusing to take their dog off their lead in certain areas.

The new study by Agria Pet Insurance, which surveyed a diverse group of dog owners across the UK, delves into the concerns of dog owners regarding the UK's litter problem and its effects on their dogs. The respondents expressed several worries, including ingestion resulting in internal organ damage (54%), cuts and wounds (43%), ingestion resulting in choking (42%) and intoxication resulting from exposure to dangerous substances (37%).

The study also identified the types of litter that owners fear the most in terms of posing a significant threat to both dogs and the environment.

  • Sharp objects such as glass (68%)
  • Discarded food items, such as meat bones (38%)
  • Drug paraphernalia, such as syringes (35%)
  • Plastic waste (34%)
  • Vapes (31%)

Respondents most frequently noticed litter on the street (52%), in parks/recreational grounds (44%) and in woodland areas (44%).

The results of this research highlight the urgency of adopting sustainable practices to combat the litter problem in areas frequented by dog walkers to create safer and more enjoyable environments for dogs and their owners. This includes increased public awareness, responsible disposal of litter, and improved waste management systems.

To further awareness of this prominent issue, Agria has partnered with Paws On Plastic, a UK charity (no. SCO51306) dedicated to environmental stewardship, bringing invaluable expertise and a proven track record in fostering positive change.

Paws on Plastic encourages dog owners to pick up a couple of pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities and the environment. It also educates on the consequences of littering.

Furthermore, the collaboration extends to the involvement of internationally recognised animal rights activist and model, Jodie Kidd. Jodie's passion for the cause and her influential reach serves as catalysts for broader awareness and engagement. Her commitment to the initiative underscores the urgency of the issue and appeals to diverse audiences.

Janet Hughes, UK Sustainability Lead at Agria Pet Insurance, said: "These findings underline the importance of addressing the litter issue. They also serve as a vital call to local authorities, communities, and dog owners to come together and work towards a more sustainable and litter-free future for the UK's beloved dogs.

“It is crucial that we collectively take immediate action to tackle the litter problem in our outdoor spaces. The safety and well-being of dogs, as well as the environment, are at stake. By raising awareness and encouraging responsible behaviour, we can create a cleaner and safer environment for all. We’re hoping that as many people as possible - whether dog owners or not - join us to play our part in making a difference to our environment - every small effort helps and collectively we can have a big impact."

Marion Montgomery, Founder and Chair at Paws on Plastic, said: “Our charity is delighted to partner with Agria Pet Insurance on this wonderful campaign. So many animals, including our precious dogs, are injured by litter dropped carelessly on the ground. As dog owners, we have the opportunity to take a simple action to protect animals when we’re out walking anyway. It only takes a second for us to pick up a couple of pieces of litter and with 12 million of us in the UK, out a couple of times a day, it really does add up - actually reducing the amount of litter dropped, as studies show that fewer people drop litter when areas are clean. Another benefit is that it actually feels great in terms of mental health and positivity to take a simple action which has an immediate and visible difference. We encourage all dog owners to get involved - we’d love to see your photos! Sign up on our website, follow us on social media and get involved today - our 5th birthday.”

Cat lifestyle brand celebrates turning 10, selling more than 15k collars worldwide

British luxury cat lifestyle company Cheshire & Wain celebrates 10 years of delighting cats and their owners. Since its launch, the brand has sold more than 15,000 collars to an international market, putting cats front and centre of ‘feline’ good.

The company was born out of Founder Sonja Farrell's frustration with the limited availability of high-quality cat products, specifically in the realm of leather cat collars that were both safe and stylish for her new kitten, Percy. Finding the absence of leather collars equipped with breakaway safety clips, Sonja dedicated six months to designing the perfect solution, making it a central focus of her efforts.

A decade on, luxury leather collars remain their core focus, bringing joy to cats and their parents through creative collections like Wonderland, featuring collars inspired by Lewis Carroll's characters. The Caviar collection offers six luxury designs in novelty Caviar tins, and their grandest release, Rococo, draws inspiration from Marie Antoinette and Rococo style (worth viewing if only to see cats in Georgian wigs). In 2021, they returned to their safety-meets-style roots with Lumino Lux — hyper-reflective collars for outdoor kitties, followed by matching reflective AirTag cases.

In the same year, Cheshire & Wain also launched their Louis Wain collar collection in homage to the iconic artist and the brand’s namesake. This caught the attention of Studiocanal, who sought out Cheshire & Wain as their ‘cat’ partner for the cinematic release The Electric Life of Louis Wain, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy, celebrating the legendary artist's life.

Cheshire & Wain has grown in other ways too, adding Penelope to the cat family in 2019, as well as extending their offering to better the lives of cats, their homes, and their humans. Proud supporters of British business, Cheshire & Wain have worked closely with fellow small companies and independent designers since their early beginnings, starting with Made by Swimmer to create an ever-growing embroidered catnip toy range.

Elevating cat meal times, Cheshire & Wain also worked with ceramicist Rachel Dormor for the production of the brand’s much-loved Caviar-themed cat bowl and has also recently collaborated with ceramicist and artist Kate Welton for a three-piece collection of a koi carp water bowl and hand-painted food dishes — bringing serious creativity to cat crockery.  Continuing the arts and crafts theme, Cheshire & Wain have also brought joy to cat lovers by partnering with artist Annabel Pearl for a series of cat breed prints, original paintings featuring cats languishing on iconic chairs as well as a bespoke cat portrait service where to immortalise a feline into an original artwork.

The busy year of 2021 also saw Cheshire & Wain elevate catnaps with their sumptuously soft faux-fur Cat Cloud® Beds (with thermal technology) to provide dreamy, cosy slumbers for kitties (while protecting furniture from any wayward claws). In the same year, the brand also introduced the first design of their eco-led durable teaser toys produced from leather collar offcuts to help reduce waste from the Cheshire & Wain studio.

Cheshire & Wain’s feline wares have also caught the eye of other luxury retailers, and the brand is proud to be stocked with the likes of Fortnum & Masons and Harrods in both their physical and online stores.

Commenting on their tenth anniversary, Cheshire & Wain Founder Sonja Farrell says: “Cheshire & Wain was a big idea inspired by one tiny kitten, my beloved Mr Percy Peter Wells. In November 2013, I sold our very first collar. Fast forward to the present day, and this little cat has inspired more than 10 collar collections along with a wide product line to bring a Cheshire & Wain luxury to cats across the globe. We can’t wait to bring even more of the finer things in life to cats in our next decade.”

Cheshire & Wain is based at a studio in Bridport on the scenic south coast of England, after relocating from East London earlier this year. Sonja now also lives with Bridport with her partner Jack and the cats Percy and Penelope, who are adapting well to their slower-paced homelife. Following the announcement that IVC Evidensia were the exclusive sponsor of the StreetVet calendar for 2024, the leading veterinary group have taken their fundraising to new heights, with a charity climb over the O2 Arena in London.

The aim was to raise as much money as possible for the worthwhile charity, for the purposes of reaching even more pets of people experiencing homelessness than ever before.

Over £6,000 has already been raised for the event alone, following fundraising campaigns over the last few months. The overall target is £100,000, and this latest challenge brings the team that bit closer to reaching it.

To ensure this latest fundraising challenge was truly a group effort, the team of 18, led by Group CEO Simon Smith, were comprised of clinicians, nurses, graduate vets and members of the leadership team.

Alongside Simon, other members of the team included Russell Trenter (Chief Operating Officer), John Dinsdale (Country Medical Director), Dave Martin (Group Veterinary Welfare Advisor), Laura Playforth (Group Quality Improvement Director), Mandisa Greene (Vets Now Chief Medical Officer) and Sarah Heath (Group Sustainability & ESG Director).

This is the latest fundraising effort as part of the StreetVet charity partnership with IVC Evidensia, which has included the One Million Minutes fitness challenge in September, and the 2024 Calendar launch in October, which is still available via the My Family Vets website.

John Dinsdale, Country Medical Director for IVC Evidensia, commented: “Although it was a freezing cold day, we’re pleased to have completed the challenge and add even more to our StreetVet fundraising total.

“StreetVet is such a vital charity, helping pets and owners facing homelessness. I’m proud that we’re helping them make a difference.”

Maria McCartney, a veterinary graduate who was chosen for the climb out of a pool of volunteers, commented: “As much as the climb was a special experience for me personally, it is even more special that our team have been able to raise valuable funds for StreetVet that will go towards helping even more animals whose owners who have been affected by homelessness."

If you would like to contribute to the fundraising total for the O2 Arena climb, you still donate via the justgiving page here.

Tumour surgically removed from pet rat

A vet operated to remove a tumour that was a third of the pre-surgical weight of a pet rat...

A vet operated to remove a tumour that was a third of the pre-surgical weight of a pet rat.

Dr Ashton Hollwarth, from IVC Evidensia Referral hospital Great Western Exotics in Swindon, was stunned to discover the tumour weighed a staggering 140g.

The tumour on two-year-old Latte was by far the biggest Dr Hollwarth had seen, and she faced several technical challenges during the hour-long procedure.

Although mammary tumours are common in rats and the majority are benign fibroadenomas, the tumour was so large it was severely restricting Latte's movement.

She was struggling to use her right hind leg and the tumour was starting to ulcerate.

“This tumour was absolutely massive and at least twice the size of anything I’ve operated on,” said Dr Hollwarth, an Exotic Veterinary Surgeon and Advanced Practitioner in Zoological Medicine.

“But otherwise, Latte’s general health was good, and she was obviously much-loved.

“We would normally have had her on her side, but the tumour was so big it was pressing on her chest, and we had to cut from the top to try and relieve the pressure.

“Once it was peeled back from the underlying body wall and the vessels had been ligated, we had to counteract a potentially catastrophic drop in blood pressure as we were removing up to a third of her blood volume.

“My nurse managed that really nicely and I was then able to close the dead space.”

Dr Hollwarth used intradermal stitches to try and minimise the possibility of Latte picking at the stitches once she was awake, and a local anaesthetic block was administered.

However, a few hours later she did try to chew the sutures.

“Our on-call vet, Lucia Gomez, quickly saw she was opening the surgical wound, re-anaesthetised her and stitched it back up again,” said Dr Hollwarth.

“She then made a ‘shark fin’ bandage to stop Latte from flexing around to groom the wound, which worked very nicely.”

The incision healed well, and two weeks later Latte was given the all-clear to return to normal activity.

Online first aid course for dog owners

The Bone Idol Academy is urging pet parents to get clued up on canine first aid, by offering an accessible and informative online course...

The Bone Idol Academy is urging pet parents to get clued up on canine first aid, by offering an accessible and informative online course.

After working in the pet industry for many years, and with decades of animal care experience in the business, the aim of the £30 course is to get as many people as possible to learn the basics of canine first aid, so that they react calmly and appropriately in a crisis.

Many pet parents choose to do hands-on first aid qualifications or courses, but others maybe don't have the time, or money to take that step, so Bone Idol tutor Jon Clark says that this course is the introduction to the subject which will give dog owners key life saving skills.

He said: "The more people that have the basics of canine first aid the better, and this course, which can be done at your own pace, takes around two hours in total to complete and contains great information, which will help you react quickly and decisively in an emergency.

"From the basics of CPR, to understanding when to call the vet, this course is a great place to start for people who are strapped for time. It's a positive step in the right direction and will help keep your dog and other dogs you meet safer."

Qualified tutors at the Bone Idol academy have taught canine first aid qualifications, so this short course distils some of that key information in a bitesize and easy to digest way.

Jon added: "We have been part of the pet industry for many years, and as a business we have taught hundreds of people pet first aid as a qualification. But this course is accessible, online and useful for the wider public."

Topics on the video course which is led by Jon include CPR, poisoning, wound care and choking, and some modules include demonstrations of key techniques.

" There is key information and advice that you may not know about your dog, and who knows, taking this course might inspire you to go for the qualification to expand your knowledge." Added Jon

Award-winning retailer reveals secrets of success

South Lincolnshire-based Pet Stop has been named Independent Retailer of the Year 2023 at the prestigious PIF Awards. Owner Paula Machin reveals the secrets of the Market Deeping store’s success...

South Lincolnshire-based Pet Stop has been named Independent Retailer of the Year 2023 at the prestigious PIF Awards. Owner Paula Machin reveals the secrets of the Market Deeping store’s success.

What’s it like to win this national award?

It's amazing. It has made all the years of hard work worth it. All the late nights and stress and yeah, it's just lovely to be recognised.

What’s your background?

I started out working in a garden centre when I was 16. A few years later a position became available in the pet department and I applied. I was there for nearly 20 years. I’ve always loved pets – growing up in my family home we had a Springer Spaniel and then I have my dog now.

Did you work in the pet industry before opening up a pet store?

I worked in a pet shop which was based inside a garden centre for nearly 20 years.

What made you open your own pet store?

I thought I could offer more. Basically, I could see where the shop was going wrong and my suggestions were not being heard. There was too much focus on own brand items which limited the choice for the pet owner. There are some really cool pet products out there and I wanted to offer them.

When did Pet Stop open?

In May 2017 we opened. We waited for a commercial building to become available and we wanted it in Market Deeping and somewhere that had car parking. So we waited for something on the Industrial Estate.

Was it hard to get the business going in the early days?

Yes, it was and mainly down to the footfall. I assumed, like I’m sure many businesses do, that once you open your doors everyone will just run through the door. When they don’t it can feel very disheartening. It was two years before it started getting a little busier. By year three, the business felt it was in a good position and going in the right direction.

Are you happy with the growth of the business?

Yes, I’m very happy with it! When I started the business I had an idea of the total annual revenue I would be happy to turnover, and by year three we had more than exceeded this. Most of the growth is down to the additional marketing and instore development over the past few years.

What would you say is the ethos of your business?

It’s making sure regardless of budget or regardless of the breed or type of pet, we are available to offer advice and products to support our customers and their pets, and having the freedom to offer a wide range of products to do that.

How do you keep regular customers happy and you stop them buying their pet food and accessories online?

Our focus is not to stock what supermarkets are stocking. Also a lot of the products we stock are not sold via Amazon for example. But mainly it’s down to people – the supermarkets, big chains and online can’t and don’t offer the level of customer service we can as an independent. People want to come and talk about their pets, fuss their dog and hear what a lovely animal they have. Our focus has always been on customer service. We always have a member of the team available who can answer questions, and another covering the main checkout for other customers. For us, customer satisfaction is being recommended to family, friends, colleagues and a returning customer – that’s what is important.

How you attract new customers?

In the early years we did some local advertising, but mainly our business grew through word of mouth. The local area has grown in size and we expanded our marketing activities with the launch of our Loyalty Card. With this we launched a bi-monthly email newsletter. We relaunched with a new website which is supported with online advertising. We also have built and engaged local Facebook page and are on Instagram. Most recently we began a series of walks with my dog Wilson which is generating quite a lot of interest with our customers and connecting us to new customers. Our focus is more than a foot in the door, we want to get to know our customers and develop relationships with them and their pets.

How many members of staff are there?

We have a team of six, including myself and we’ve worked with a marketing consultant since 2022. I have a Distinction in City & Guilds Pet Store Management and OATA aquatics qualifications. I’m also a trained microchipper. My cheeky cocker spaniel Wilson can often be found in store too. Kim, has over 10 years experience. She has a First Diploma and a National Diploma in Animal Management and is usually the one found on the floor giving out cuddles. Kim has an Australian cattle dog called Ozzy. Gemma has a HND in animal management and is training to be a groomer. If you have any questions about brushes, shampoos etc then she is your lady. Gemma has two huskies called Hera and Andromeda. Megan is currently studying towards a HND in animal management. Working alongside us, we have a number of other friendly staff members.

What’s the secret of your success?

The secret, I would say is working hard work. It’s not an overnight success. It’s never resting on your laurels. It's constantly thinking what's next to ensure the business keeps evolving and being very proactive. It’s about being accountable and responsible for the success. Instead of moaning about having a bad week, it’s about getting out there and constantly building the business.

What advice would you give other independent pet retailers facing competition from other outlets?

Always focus on providing much better customer service because you're never going to get that in the bigger places. And then try and stock stuff they don't stock.

How do you see your business developing over future years?

Over the past couple of years we’ve been focused on building customer data to build relationships. The next focus will be to deepen those relationships and offer more content and advice and products to support our customers and their pets. We are constantly developing our online space and have more to come there. In store this year we’ve had a refit which allowed us much greater capacity to stock products. We will continue to work with this new space – and I make no secret of it, I love shopping for new stock!

Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jim Weston looks back on distinguished career

Jim Weston was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s PIF Awards. Here Jim looks back on a distinguished career, one which saw him launching and selling two very profitable businesses – one a superstore retail chain and the other a global pet food brand...

Jim Weston was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Pet Industry Federation annual awards event and dinner.

Jim joined the pet trade at the age of 21 – his first job was to clear a rat’s nest from underneath a pallet in the cellar.

He has remained in the industry ever since, successfully launching and selling two very profitable businesses – one a superstore retail chain and the other a global pet food brand.

Together with his great friend Martin Irving, he founded Wilsons Pet Centres in 1993. In the following 15 years, they built a chain of 10 pet superstores with central distribution and a growing import programme.

“Those were truly special times,” said Jim. “We had a fantastic team of staff and the pet trade was really taking off so there was huge opportunity.”

Wilsons was acquired by Wynnstay Plc in 2008 and rebranded as Just for Pets, which is now owned by Pedigree Wholesale.

Jim was also a founder of Fab Creations Ltd, a non profit making import and buying group of five independent pet chains spread across the UK. He served on the Pet Care Trust and was a speaker at many trade events.

Jim co-founded The First Class Pet Company in 2010, initially to represent premium UK brands in the Asian market. Five years later Little BigPaw was launched to great success, supplying premium quality British made foods and treats. Little BigPaw is now sold across 45 countries, winning Exporter of the Year twice as well as both the Queens Award and the Kings Award for Enterprise for outstanding export growth.

“I have been incredibly lucky to have had many adventures in the pet trade,” added Jim. “I have been fortunate to work with some incredible people, to travel all around the world and to experience different cultures but most of all to create many lifelong friends, many of whom are also customers and suppliers”

Jim even met his wife through the industry. Melanie was the second representative taken on by Eukanuba in the UK. She called into one of Jim’s stores and the rest is history.

“I just wanted a good deal on some dog food,” said Jim, “but ended up with kids, dogs, chickens and a flock of sheep. We celebrate 30 years of marriage shortly and Mel has always been there to support me . This award is a huge honour and it is as much for her as it is for me.”

The First Class Pet Company Ltd was acquired by Swedish-based Pet Buddy Group in 2022. Jim remains in the background and has stepped back from day-to-day operations so that he can concentrate on his property business.

“The pet industry is very special to me so I will always take a keen interest in it. The Pet Buddy Group has enjoyed some impressive early success and it is great to see new blood entering the trade. They are incredibly ambitious and will be a big name in years to come – I just wish I was 20 years younger so I could keep up with them.”

Pet retailer takes a stand against XL Bully legislation

The managing director of a leading pet supermarket across the South Coast has said the new XL Bully legislation is “simply unfair” and another knee jerk response by the Government...

The managing director of a leading pet supermarket across the South Coast has said the new XL Bully legislation is “simply unfair” and another knee jerk response by the Government.

Deborah Burrows of Healthy Pet Store in Totton said she was very saddened to hear that another breed is being unfairly punished under the Dangerous Dogs Act. The Government has also offered £200 in ‘compensation’ to dog guardians for euthanasia.

The legislation outlines that from 31 December 2023, breeding, selling, advertising, rehoming, abandoning and allowing an American XL Bully dog to stray will be illegal.

From 1st February 2024, it will become illegal to own an American XL Bully dog if they are not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs.

There has already been confusion surrounding the potential misunderstanding of the breed classifications. Concerns have been raised from police forces, charities and vets who will be responsible for enforcing the law and euthanizing healthy animals.

Deborah said: “I am so sad for responsible caregivers of these dogs who have all been tarnished with the same brush. Despite renowned behaviourists advising the Government about this breed, the UK has added another type of dog to the Dangerous Dogs list.

“This is a result of the Government failing to enforce legislation surrounding breeding animals and responsible pet ownership.

“A dog’s life is priceless. They are part of a family and it is appalling that anyone could think £200 could justify putting an animal to sleep. It’s deeply unfair this breed has been labelled as ‘dangerous’.

“Behaviourists are saying that unethical breeding and training practices are likely to be factors involved in some dogs’ behaviours.

“At Healthy Pet Store, we stand strongly against breed-specific legislation and we want to assure customers that we welcome all dogs in our store, regardless of their type, breed or size”, Deborah concluded.

Benyfit Natural introduces 100% recyclable packaging

Premium raw dog food manufacturer Benyfit Natural has announced the launch of its new 100% recyclable cardboard box packaging...

Premium raw dog food manufacturer Benyfit Natural has announced the launch of its new 100% recyclable cardboard box packaging.

Removing all polystyrene box inserts from November 2023, the brand’s new innovative delivery box has insulation inserts made from fully biodegradable cardboard which can be recycled in household recycling bins across the UK.

The new solution, featuring a new design, means that every part of the brand’s delivery is now 100% recyclable, delivering on its ‘Planet Friendly Packaging’ promise.

The new cardboard box is made from ethically sourced and sustainable cardboard material, which makes it biodegradable. Benyfit Natural’s new packaging is not only eco-friendly, but it also presents an opportunity for canine owners to adopt a zero-waste approach when feeding their dogs raw food.

Both Benyfit Natural’s new cardboard box and their Prevented Ocean Plastic tub can be easily disposed of in the recycling bin.

Greg Van Praagh, Head of UK & Europe at RPFC, said: “Our new recyclable cardboard box packaging is just one step closer to fulfilling our promise of reducing our impact on our planet.

“Pet owners are increasingly seeking products that are not just healthy for their dogs but also for the planet and our focus is to deliver this to all our customers.

“We looked at many options when making the decision to remove polystyrene from our deliveries, with most liners requiring access to compost or special recycling centres, our cardboard liners can go straight into the recycling at home.”

UK pet firms recognised for Ukraine donations

Pet businesses that have generously donated pet food and products to the abandoned pets in war-torn Ukraine were honoured at the PIF Awards Dinner...

Pet businesses that have generously donated pet food and products to the abandoned pets in war-torn Ukraine were honoured at the PIF Awards Dinner.

Yuriy Tokarski, CEO of the U-Hearts Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping the living conditions of abandoned pets in Ukraine, talked to over 300 guests gathered at the Awards about the work of U-Hearts and the impact of the donations from UK pet companies on the pets left behind. So far, 20 tons of pet food and pet supplies, including flea treatments, toys, sprays and shampoos have been received, with 14 tons of the pet food donations being distributed in 12 regions of Ukraine.

Yuriy also presented a heart-warming video of volunteers working in shelters thanking UK companies, which included a personal address from Dmytro Kuleba, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, before he presented each donor company with a certificate of appreciation for their generosity.

The companies who received a certificate were:

  • Jollyes – The Pet People
  • Johnson’s Veterinary Products
  • James & Steel (pictured top)
  • Pet Family (pictured above)
  • Little Big Paw
  • Skinner’s
  • Mackle Petfoods
  • Pet’sUp
  • Pedigree Wholesale
  • The Big Biscuit Company

As a thank you to the Pet Industry Federation for co-ordinating the donations during the course of the last 12 months, Yuriy also presented Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, with a unique gift – a metal pet bowl which had been moulded from a used Ukrainian artillery shell.

Nigel said: “We were delighted to welcome Yuriy in person at our Awards this year to meet and thank those companies who have donated products and food to abandoned pets in Ukraine. It was a moving part of our event and a fitting way to mark their generosity. Whilst Ukraine is not in the headlines as much as it was, the need for support is still very much present – perhaps even more so now. We would be pleased to hear from other pet companies that feel they can support the work in Ukraine and would ask anyone interested to get in touch.”

Further information can be found at www.petfederation.co.uk. Companies who wish to donate pet products and food are asked to contact PIF at info@petfederation.co.uk or telephone 01234 273933.

Fast-growing nationwide pet retailer Jollyes has been celebrating award success as it prepares to open its final two stores of 2024 in Reading and Hull.

Jollyes was named Pet Retail Chain of the Year at the PIF Awards after a year of growth that has seen it exceed £100 million turnover in FY2023, employ over 1,000 colleagues and put it well on the way to having 100 stores in early 2024.

And that progress was also recognised in the prestigious Retail Week awards just 24 hours later.

Jollyes was shortlisted in two categories that cover the whole of the UK retail sector.  At an awards ceremony scheduled for March 2024 it will take its place on the shortlist for both best retailer in the UK under £250m and best speciality retailer in the UK.

The award and nominations come as Jollyes prepares to open its final two stores of the year in Hull and Reading on 24 November.

Each of the flagship stores will employ a team of 12 to support it and feature a Raw Food shop-in-shop, Jolly Groomer and a Community Pet Clinic.

The Reading store, at Unit 1B, Reading Gateway, Imperial Way, Reading, RG2 0TD will be managed by Emily Palethorpe and her dog Rolo.  Emily joins Jollyes after manager roles at Tesco and Vision Express.

The Hull store at Unit 4B Kingswood Retail Park, Althorp Road, Hull, HU7 3DA will be managed by Ross Hall who moved to the UK from Australia 17 years ago and has spent his whole career in Britain working in, and managing, pet stores.

Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes paid tribute to the team after a remarkable 24 hours.

“It’s humbling to even be mentioned alongside other great retailers, but credit for these awards and nominations goes to the whole Jollyes team.

“They’ve put their heart and soul this year into developing ranges, opening stores and serving customers with real pace and innovation.

“I’m privileged to call them my colleagues and am excited about what we’ll continue to achieve as we bring the service and value Britain’s pet parents rely on us for.”

The opening of the two new stores in Reading and Hull – the 97th and 98th in the UK – will mean Jollyes has opened 31 stores in just two years.
