Vet pricing under scrutiny as Jollyes gets set to open new store in Northampton

Award-winning pet retail chain Jollyes will be offering cheaper vet services when it opens its newest shop – the 102nd store in its portfolio – in Northampton tomorrow (Friday)...

Award-winning pet retail chain Jollyes will be offering cheaper vet services when it opens its newest shop – the 102nd store in its portfolio – in Northampton tomorrow (Friday).

The store in an old Furniture Warehouse unit on Towcester Road will include a Community Pet Clinic that offers vet services such as microchipping and vaccinations at much lower prices than traditional vets.

Vets accredited by the Royal Veterinary College will offer transparent and low pricing on essential services that pet owners need.

Primary course vaccinations for dogs and cats are available in Jollyes’ community pet clinic for £33 covering both doses and annual boosters for £25. Microchipping, already compulsory for dogs and mandatory for cats in England from June, start at just £13.

The government through the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) is already investigating the top six vet chains for possible overcharging and anti-competitive practices that may be leading to pet parents paying far more than they need for vet services.

As part of that investigation, Jollyes provided its own evidence to the CMA about vet pricing in Northampton. While some vets were reticent to give prices, those that did were significantly higher than those offered in Jollyes.

A microchipping service that costs £13 at Jollyes was as high as £30 at one local vet, and the price differential on kitten and puppy vaccinations was even more stark. Both necessary doses are a combined £33 at a Jollyes’ community pet clinic but as high as £98 at another vet.

When it opens, Jollyes’ commitment to value to Northampton pet parents will go well beyond the clinic service it provides.

The new Jollyes store will have a raw food frozen ‘shop-in-shop’ alongside high quality private label pet food such as its own Lifestage, K9 and Rileys brands which offer a premium experience without a big brand price tag.

Jollyes has recruited a team of 12 in Northampton, including manager Andrew Bartlett who joins the pet retailer from Topps Tiles.

For the proud dad of two Labradors, Rocky and Raven, looking after pets runs in the family. Andrew’s mother-in-law runs an animal rescue centre, the source of his two labs and three cats Larry, Lana and Luna.

Andrew got married on 6 April but is delaying his honeymoon so he can open the store.

Performing the grand opening tomorrow will be Mayor Cllr Stephen Hibbert and Mayoress Liz Coxalong. There’ll be animal-themed stilt walkers and the Jollyes mascot to meet and greet customers with free goodie bags for the first 100 customers.

The following weekend on Saturday 4 May, there’ll also be live entertainment with prizes, Jollyes’ iconic ‘Wheel of Fur-tune’ with on-the-spot instant wins and balloon modelling for the kids.

“We’re already working hard getting the store ready for opening at the end of the month so we can give pet parents in Northampton a new alternative for their pets at home.” said Jollyes regional manager Natalie Bentley.

“With a successful store in Kettering, we know how much people in Northamptonshire love their pets, so Andrew and his team can’t wait to bring the kind of value and service we’re famous for, here to the heart of the county.”

When open, Jollyes’ Northampton store will be its 102nd, capping off an amazing few weeks for the retailer as it won new investment to accelerate its store growth and then being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for businesses in the category for retailers turning over less than £250m.

Renewed boost to international interest in PATS

PATS 2024 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – is set to have a strong international presence with a growing number of pet buyers and exhibitors from around the world expected to attend the new three-day show taking place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October...

Barcelona-based Rob James, of Petwork Marketing, and Spanish pet shop owner Mireia Sabate De Vale are regular visitors to PATS.

PATS 2024 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – is set to have a strong international presence with a growing number of pet buyers and exhibitors from around the world expected to attend the new three-day show taking place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October.

In a further move to create more interest with international buyers, the PATS team will be travelling to Nuremberg in Germany next month to exhibit at Interzoo in the British Pavilion. PATS will also have a presence at Superzoo in Las Vegas in August.

“Our primary aim for exhibiting at international shows is to meet, talk to and encourage international retailers and distributors to come to our show,” said Gordon Thomas, of Impact Exhibitions & Events, organisers of PATS.

“We know that UK pet products sell very strongly around the world and representatives from international pet companies can see the advantage of meeting up with British suppliers all under one roof.

“They agree that PATS is the perfect destination to discover what’s new in the market for the year ahead, and an ideal opportunity to talk to UK-based manufacturers and suppliers.”

Gordon added: “We will be working closely with trade association PetQuip on a programme to identify key European pet product buyers and invite them to visit PATS.

“We ran a similar Inward Mission programme with PetQuip pre-Covid and it was highly successful, attracting buyers from across Europe, including Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland.”

At the Interzoo show Gordon will promote the new three-day PATS 2024 which is the biggest ever in the show’s 16 years. With five months still to go, more than 260 brands have already signed up to exhibit and the final figure is expected to be over 300.

PetQuip’s Trade Federation Manager Susan Fairley is pleased to be supporting PATS 2024 in guaranteeing renewed interest from international buyers. She said: “The new three-day timeline will add value for both UK and international buyers. The last day of the Telford show last year was notably busy right up until the end, so it’s clear that the current visitors will welcome more time to complete their visit. For international buyers, the extended show days will make their trip more beneficial.”

Barcelona-based Rob James, of Petwork Marketing, sources UK-manufactured products for a network of 50 stores across Spain and has attended PATS in the past with partner and pet shop owner Mireia Sabate De Vale. He said: “I will certainly attend PATS for a minimum of two days and probably all three. A well organised trade fair is vital for our company. It gives us the opportunity to not only conduct a great deal of business, but it also facilitates the introduction to many new products that we would otherwise struggle to find the time to see. I am delighted the show has grown into a three-day annual event and that even more manufacturers and distributors will be able to exhibit. It will prove to be a good use of our time and resources.”

A full list of exhibitors can be found on the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk where visitors can also register to attend for free.

Tillymint Communications has excellence in its sights

Marketing and public relations consultant Tillymint Communications has made the finals of a prestigious industry award – for the third year running...

The company, run by Alison Gallagher-Hughes, has been shortlisted in the Independent Practitioner category of the CIPR Excellence Awards.

Marketing and public relations consultant Tillymint Communications has made the finals of a prestigious industry award – for the third year running.

The company, run by Alison Gallagher-Hughes, has been shortlisted in the Independent Practitioner category of the CIPR Excellence Awards 2024. The awards represents global recognition from the world’s only chartered PR organisation – the Chartered Institute of Public Relations - and attract a huge number of entries.

Alison, works mainly with business-to-business clients in the pet industry. She scooped the CIPR’s Independent Practitioner regional title  - PRide - for the past two years and is hoping that 2024 will take her to the top for the international award.

Tillymint is one of six contenders - the winner is selected following a rigorous panel interview with judges  - and will be announced at a glitzy awards ceremony, at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, on 26 June. This year, the ceremony, is being hosted by comedian Axel Blake.

Alison founded Tillymint Communications in 2020. She was previously Head of PR for a full-service agency and has spent much of her career working ‘in-house’ primarily within the public sector: policing, social housing and further education. She moved into PR following a career in newspaper journalism.

She decided to set up her own business in the wake of the Covid crisis.

“The pandemic brought many businesses to their knees but as the threat lifted, there was a growing need for them to ‘get back in the game’ and actively promote their products and services, so it seemed like the ideal opportunity to start a new chapter by founding Tillymint.

“I look back over the past four years and marvel at how rapidly the business has grown. Our first project was a one-off piece of work for an organisation who soon after became a retained client and they remain with us today. That is incredibly rewarding because the more we work with a particular client the more that trusted relationship develops and we become an outsourced member of their team – always on hand to support and add value to their organisation.

Alison said that she was delighted to be “in the mix” for this year’s CIPR Excellence Awards.

“To be shortlisted in this category is a very great honour. As a Chartered Practitioner, I know how hard CIPR works to establish and maintain professional standards and I am very humbled to be a finalist for a third consecutive year alongside some very worthy contenders.”

Tillymint has exhibited at PATS for the past two years and will be on stand P12 for the 2024 show at the end of September.

Nutriment rebrands raw pet food for the modern pet owner

Nutriment, a pioneer and innovator in the field of raw pet food, has announced a rebrand in response to the ever-evolving landscape of raw pet feeding.

Founded in 2013, Nutriment has spent over a decade developing premium raw pet food recipes, driving real change in the raw pet food market, and delivering accessible raw food solutions to customers across Europe.

Having teamed up with design experts and market researchers, Nutriment has meticulously combined simplicity, transparency, and sophistication to produce branding, packaging and POS materials that truly embody the Nutriment ethos. Additionally, feedback obtained from the customer research phase, which concentrated on product clarity, food presentation, brand values, overall attractiveness, and positioning within the raw food category, identified powerful insights into what customers want and need from their raw pet food provider in 2024 and beyond. The result has been a design where customers can immediately ascertain the quality of each meal and its ingredients, the ease of feeding, and the reliability of the well-established Nutriment brand, from the moment they first observe the pack on a shelf.

“We’ve spent a considerable amount of time evaluating the ever-evolving raw pet food market and landscape and drilling down into the drivers of today’s pet owners, in order to reimagine the Nutriment brand to align with these findings,” comments Ryan Winwright, Head of Commercial at Nutriment.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on being an agile, dynamic and responsive business with the fundamental aim of provided first-class raw nutrition for pets in accessible ways for pet owners. Nutriment 2.0 will redefine raw pet food and raw pet feeding and we’re incredibly excited to see this take place.”

Leveraging the depth and quality of the insight gained through the market and customer research during the branding redesign project, Nutriment has also announced some exciting new product innovations which will be released to the marketplace in the next three months. Nutriment’s core portfolio of recipes has expanded over its 11-year operation to maintain its position as a pioneer in the field. This has included innovative products such as: Support - recipes specifically designed to provide nutritional support for ongoing health concerns; and Just – one ingredient, complementary meal solutions for supporting at-home meal preparations.

Retailers will start seeing rebranded Nutriment packaging and POS materials from June 2024, following a website refresh in May.

Nutriment’s new-look branding and packaging will be presented at Interzoo 2024 between May 7th and 10th in Nuremburg. To be the first to see, head to The Nutriment Company (formerly Voff) stand in Hall 5 (stand 5-342, 5-442). Designer dog breeds at high risk of tick infestation

New research from the Royal Veterinary College has revealed that designer cross breeds, including Cavapoo, Cockapoo, Goldendoodle and Cavachons have higher risk of becoming infested by ticks due to their Poodle parentage...

New research from the Royal Veterinary College has revealed that designer cross breeds, including Cavapoo, Cockapoo, Goldendoodle and Cavachons have higher risk of becoming infested by ticks due to their Poodle parentage.

The study scored Standard Poodles as the second highest breed at risk of tick infestation – suggesting the curly coats of these dogs are simply too inviting for ticks to refuse to attach themselves. These findings aim to help owners, breeders and vets better understand why certain dogs are more at risk, what to look out for and how to best prevent tick infestation in dogs.

In recent years, owners have fallen in love with the concept of ‘designer dog breeds’ that result from deliberate crossing between established pure breeds and combining their names. For example, a Labrador Retriever crossed with a Poodle is known as a Labradoodle. While many of the new designer crossbreeds include Poodle heritage, often due to perceptions that their non-shedding coats make them less allergenic, this new study highlights the heightened risk of tick infestation as a drawback to owning dogs with these curly poodle-type coats.

The RVC’s VetCompass study examined a random sample of anonymised veterinary health records from more than 900,000 dogs in the UK. Over a five-year period, almost 2,000 tick infestation cases were identified. These results show that ticks are a common parasite in dogs, with 2% (one in every 50 dogs) diagnosed with at least one tick infestation over the five-year study period.

The team explored a list of possible risk factors to understand what makes some types of dogs more prone to tick infestation than others. The factors investigated included characteristics such as the ear carriage, haircoat, skull shape, and bodyweight as well as demographic criteria spanning breed, breed purity, Kennel Club recognised breeds and groups, age, sex and more.

The study found that while the new designer breeds – increasingly popular among pet owners – had a higher risk of tick infestation, some longer established breeds were also at high risk, such as the Cairn Terrier, Standard Poodle, Parson Russell Terrier, Golden Retriever and Miniature Schnauzer. In comparison, the breeds with the lowest odds included the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rottweiler, Chihuahua and English Bulldog.

Male dogs had 1.24 times the risk compared to females. Dogs with medium-length coats (x2.20 risk) and those with V-shaped drop or long, floppy ears (x1.23 risk) also had higher risk of tick infestation.

Ticks are parasites that attach to the skin and suck blood from animals and humans for up to a week before dropping off when they are fully fed. They can also transmit several serious diseases. Ticks normally live in woodland and grassland, and areas with lots of wildlife. However, factors such as urbanisation, climate change, increased national and international pet importation, and decreasing boundaries between humans, pets and wildlife, have expanded the geographic distribution of ticks and have increased the likelihood of infestation by ticks and transmission of infectious diseases that ticks can carry. Despite the human and canine health risks from tick infestation, until now, few studies had explored the frequency and risk factors for tick infestation in dogs in the UK.

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor of Companion Animal Epidemiology at RVC, and lead author of the study, said: “There is no single perfect dog breed so it is critical that we fully understand the strengths and weaknesses for the breed we choose to bring into our own family. Owners of dogs that are either Poodle or have Poodle heritage can now be aware of the need to routinely check their dogs for ticks and to perhaps ensure the coats of these dogs are kept short.”

Bill Lambert, Health, Welfare and Breeding Services Executive at The Kennel Club, added: “Ticks aren't just pests that feast on your dog and cause them to itch; they can also be carriers of serious diseases. They can be dangerous for any age of dog and indeed any breed – although as this paper shows some dogs can be more susceptible to picking them up due to their coat – so it's important owners know what to do if they spot one.

“We hope this research, funded in part by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, will help to increase vigilance amongst owners, and in turn prevent discomfort and the spread of infectious disease in dogs caused by ticks.”

The RVC’s VetCompass programme seeks to provide evidence-based research and guidance for vets and pet owners on a range of topics aimed at improving companion animal health, with more than 140 papers published. The research team for this new study on ticks was made up of academics from the RVC and also included an undergraduate veterinary student, Rinrada Komutrattananon, from the RVC’s BVetMed course.

BETA International announces Medical Detection Dogs as Charity of the Year

BETA International has announced that its chosen charity for 2024 will be Medical Detection Dogs, a charity that's close to the hearts of many members of the equestrian community.

Medical Detection Dogs started in 2008, utilising a dog's incredible sense of smell to help support humans, whether this is in detecting cancer, neurological diseases, specific bacteria, and even malaria; or supporting people with complex medical conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, PoTS, Addison's Disease and more. Working with the Bio Detection Dogs in this way is hoped to improve the speed of diagnosis for diseases, and Medical Alert Assistance Dogs continue to support people all over the country with life threatening conditions, helping to them lead more normal lives, saving lives, and also preventing many hospitalisations. The work done by the charity is ground-breaking and extensive, and BETA International is delighted to be able to provide a platform to showcase this at the 2024 event.

“We are so excited to welcome Medical Detection Dogs to BETA International,” said Claire Williams from BETA International. “The charity was suggested to us by various members of the committee and when we started to research them in greater detail, we were in awe of what the charity is doing and how life changing this is. We have many pet retailers visit BETA International each year, lots of equestrian retailers stocking pet products, and there's a real affinity between horses and dogs which is well known. We have lots of exciting and interactive activities planned at the show with Medical Detection Dogs, and we can't wait to learn more and meet some of these four legged lifesavers during the event too.”

“As we celebrate our 15th birthday and our founder, Dr Claire Guest's recent OBE, we have great ambition to take our work to the next level, transitioning our world leading proof of concept work in the Bio Detection sphere, to practical deployment with significant positive societal impacts,” said Ruth Lister from Medical Detection Dogs. “To do this we require transformational funding and to achieve that, we need significant exposure to the right audiences with opportunities to share our story and secure their support. Having such a high-profile opportunity as Charity of the Year partnerships with organisations such as BETA International is key to this, and we're all delighted to have been chosen. Both organisations share common interests and values, with none of us untouched by the conditions our dogs can diagnose or support, Cancer, Parkinson's, Diabetes, PoTS, Non-Epileptic Seizures – the list goes on. I am sure this will be hugely beneficial to our charity and add value to the BETA International programme over the two days.”

BETA International will be held at NAEC Stoneleigh from 22nd-23rd September 2024. You can find out more about BETA International and register to visit at www.beta-int.com. To find out more about Medical Detection Dogs, see www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk.

The team at Petpals, both at the head office and franchisees throughout the network, proudly rallied behind Tracey Dawber, Franchise Support Manager, as she successfully completed this year’s London Marathon on Sunday.

Tracey's participation in the marathon not only marked a personal triumph but also served as a heartfelt initiative in support of Cats Protection – a cause deeply cherished by the Petpals brand.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have laced up my running shoes in support of such a worthy cause,” said Tracey. “With the support of my family and the entire Petpals network, I tackled the 26.2-mile challenge in 5.5 hours, raising more than £1,600 for Cats Protection.”

Cats Protection, an organisation dedicated to rehoming abandoned cats and advocating for feline welfare, resonated deeply with Tracey and the Petpals team. The charity not only provides shelter but also campaigns for change across the UK and offers educational resources and fostering services, including for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse.

This is not Tracey’s first endeavour in pushing herself for a charitable cause, taking part in the London marathon last year and raising £2,000 for Dogs Trust. This year, she aimed to replicate her success for Cats Protection and has already exceeded 80 percent of her fundraising target.

“I was so excited to take part again this year, despite a recent injury,” added Tracey. “But the unwavering dedication to feline welfare at Cats Protection touched me deeply, compelling me to complete the challenge. Their cause, often overshadowed by more mainstream charities, truly deserves our support.”

Tracey’s commitment to the welfare of pets mirrors the ethos of Petpals, a brand deeply rooted in the bond between pets and their owners.

“Tracey’s passion for pets and dedication to their wellbeing embody our brand’s values,” said Kevin Thackrah, Director of Petpals. “We were so proud of all of the hard work and training she put in – the entire franchise network was behind her!”

The winners of the eighth Northern Ireland Agria Vet Community Awards (formerly NIVNOTY) were crowned at a glittering ceremony in Belfast.

Celebrating the veterinary professionals who go above and beyond the call of duty, the awards recognise those who stand out as positively impacting their peers and crucially the lives of pets and their owners.

The awards are organised by Susie Hill, Business Development Manager at Agria Pet Insurance, and supported by BVNA Regional Representative Louise Taylor, the Association of Practitioners in Northern Ireland (AVSPNI) and The Young Vet Network.

On-line pet food suppliers found to be selling illegal products

Home-based online pet food suppliers are being reminded of the importance of ensuring that the products that they sell are legal after 10 were found to be selling products that were not legally compliant with product labelling requirements...

Home-based online pet food suppliers are being reminded of the importance of ensuring that the products that they sell are legal after 10 were found to be selling products that were not legally compliant with product labelling requirements.

The Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service carried out test purchases across Somerset and Devon (including Plymouth and Torbay).

Four of the businesses looked at are based in Somerset and six in Devon operating from home and selling through social media platforms and marketplaces, and on their own websites.

All 10 businesses failed strict labelling requirements. Officers tested dog treats and a canine supplements and in each case the product was incorrectly labelled.

In each case the business had not produced the pet food themselves; eight were repackaged products produced by other businesses and in two cases the products had been manufactured for them by another business.

The suppliers have been given guidance on how to ensure that the products that they sell are within the law.

The test purchases were carried out in response to concerns about the proliferation of small-scale feed business operators setting up online.

These types of small business are often not registered with Trading Standards, or if using products of animal origin, with he Animal and Plant Health Agency.

As a direct result of the test purchase and sampling exercise, five of the businesses are now registered for feed hygiene and two are purely retailing and have no requirement to register, and two will soon register.

Naomi Osborne, the service’s lead officer for Agriculture, said: “Many of these businesses set up during or after the pandemic, and we were concerned that there was a lack of awareness of the requirements and legal obligations relevant to this type of operation.

“We were particularly concerned that labelling claims, such as the product being ‘home-made’, or ‘free-from’, or ‘natural’ etc, could not be substantiated.

“It’s vital that businesses adhere to the strict regulations and that’s what we are here for, to advise and support and where needed, to intervene.

“As a service we receive many requests for advice each year on the requirements for selling homemade pet treats and feeds.

“We would initially direct them to the free business advice guides on our website and provide them with information about our paid for services and pet food pack.”

HayPigs! celebrates 'remarkable' 7th anniversary

As award-winning small animal specialist brand HayPigs! celebrates its 7th anniversary, founder Rik Cridland admits it has been ‘bloody hard’ running the business during such turbulent times.

As award-winning small animal specialist brand HayPigs! celebrates its 7th anniversary, founder Rik Cridland admits it has been ‘bloody hard’ running the business during such turbulent times.

And he has this advice to fellow business owners: “For anyone having a tough time right now, stay strong and remember why you started it.”

Rik, who started HayPigs! with wife Helen seven years ago, said: “In all honesty, it’s an achievement that we are even still in existence! We like to call our niche a ‘niche niche’.

“Running a business is bloody hard at the best of times, but when you’re constantly fighting the status quo and championing a completely different way of going about things, you’ve got to be prepared to be in it for the long haul! In truth, the only reason we are still in business, is because we care deeply about the community we serve and our purpose. We adore guinea pigs (and all animals in fact) and strive, every day, to change attitudes towards their welfare and enrichment. When we’ve had our shins kicked from underneath us (metaphorically speaking), we’ve been strong enough to regroup and start again. This has not come without massive sacrifice.

“Would I recommend starting your own business? I guess if you’ve got that itch to scratch, it’s very difficult for me to say “Don’t do it!”. But, rest assured, if you make the commitment to start, you will create something that will feel impossible to let go of, will consume a huge portion of your time and energy and will be both your ikigai and your tormentor.”

Rik added: “At HayPigs! we have achieved some incredible things, but we’ve done it with the leanest team imaginable! Not everyone knows or appreciates the fact that my wife and co-founder, Helen, is only in the business 2 days a week. For the rest of the time, she is a full-time mum, a dance teacher, and my mental crutch (she’s pretty amazing really!). Or that for the first 3 years of trading, we did HayPigs! part-time (a pet project if you will!). Not everyone knows that we also took over the running of Guinea Pig Magazine 4 years ago saving it from the brink and manage to juggle these two businesses alongside commitments to our two kids, dog and 8 guinea pigs! It’s pretty exhausting at times!

“Some mornings I wake up and wonder if I’ve still got the energy to stick at this, but then I see some social media post and it’s a guinea pig (and it’s human) enjoying something we have created and I’m re-energised. Today, I can’t quite believe it’s only been 7 years; it feels like 20! But I don’t think we’re done just yet. Enriching the lives of small furries (and their humans) every day, is what we are proud to do and will continue doing as long as we have the energy and strength to do so. While we have the love and support that we have right now, I can’t see this being a problem.

“For anyone having a tough time with their businesses right now, stay strong and remember why you started it. I find peace in the fact that we have already succeeded because we started and have given it everything. We’ve had some tough times and have failed more times than I can remember, but we’ve learnt so much along the way and are stronger for it.”

Johnson's bolsters balm range with two new products

Johnson’s Veterinary Products has added to its extensive health and wellbeing range with the introduction of two new balms aimed at dogs, cats and small animals...

Johnson’s Veterinary Products has added to its extensive health and wellbeing range with the introduction of two new balms aimed at dogs, cats and small animals.

The new products, an Antiseptic Balm and a Soothing Skin Balm for dogs, cats and small animals, expand on the success of Johnson’s existing Paw & Nose Balm for dogs, which launched last year, creating a trio of all natural and vegan friendly balms, that deliver a wide range of important healthcare benefits from soothing irritated skin to treating minor cuts and abrasions.

Used for calming insect bites and maintaining healthy skin, the Soothing Skin Balm benefits from a range of natural ingredients and anti-bacterial properties, making it a suitable choice for dogs, cats and small animals over 12 weeks old.

Meanwhile, the Antiseptic Balm is infused with English lavender and lemon blossom, giving it a wonderfully fresh scent that ensures beloved pets receive the pampered treatment they deserve.

Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s Veterinary Products, commented:

“As we enter into Spring and welcome the arrival of warmer weather, there will undoubtedly be more opportunities for our four-legged friends to venture outdoors and explore, whether that be through walks over the park or nosing around the garden. Unfortunately, there will also be an increased chance of insects and bugs latching onto their fur, which can lead to skin irritation via bites and scratches.

“With this in mind, owners must exercise caution when caring for their pets, ensuring steps are taken to protect their skin from irritation and possible infection. Fortunately, these three balms will guarantee that pets are properly protected from any would-be pests, whilst maintaining healthy skin and fur throughout the Spring and Summer months.

“We received such positive feedback following on from the launch of the Paw & Nose Balm in 2023, and certainly recognised there was a customer want and need for wellbeing products that are natural, gentle and kind, smell and look great, and importantly, are affordable.

“As the cost-of-living crisis continues to place strain on people, we understand that the concept of pampering pets might be taking a back seat for many. But this trio of products offer an indulgent feel at a cost -effective price point, making it easier for pet owners to offer their pets a little bit of luxury whilst effectively soothing any discomfort or irritation they might incur.”

The branding on the new balms sees the business’ stylish retro design being bought back to the fore, drawing on Johnson’s rich heritage to appeal to its loyal customer base.

“This is one of many exciting product releases we have planned for this year, so we encourage owners to keep their eyes peeled for more news and updates in the coming months.”

Founded in 1921, Johnson’s is one of the UK’s leading, independent manufacturers of pet healthcare products, from flea and worm treatments to shampoos and treats, all available through high street pet shops and pet stores across the UK. The family-owned business prides itself on innovation in order to meet the evolving needs of the nation’s pet owning community, whilst retaining an affordability for all.
