New freeze-dried raw pet food company COYA Pet has launched its innovative products in the established family-run Cookes Pet Supplies business across its three stores in South Yorkshire – Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley.

Cookes’ managing director Andrew Cooke (pictured above left with COYA founder Peter Roy) said: “It’s great to be part of a new era for raw feeding.

“We continue to do very well with frozen raw – consumers love feeding it. But it’s not for everyone and I believe that the future for the next stage of growth in raw feeding very much lies with freeze-dried raw.

“With COYA we have found a brand that understands our market really well. We’ve worked with the team in the past and they have always delivered excellent products, value and service.”

COYA Pet was unveiled to the pet industry at PATS Sandown in March, with the goal of making raw feeding more accessible and convenient for pet owners and retailers.

The company took its inspiration from the US market and developed a product range, made in the UK, that puts both pet health and pet owner convenience first through freeze-drying technology.

Peter Roy, founder of COYA Pet, said: “When you think of pet speciality, you think of stores like Cookes Pet Supplies. The recent refit of its Sheffield outlet really puts it amongst the top stores in the country, so when we wanted to launch in the independent channel it was the perfect location.

“It was great fun setting up there and training the Cookes team. Fabulous Andrew let us switch off one of his freezers for the launch, which was great for consumer awareness, and it saved him a few quid in energy costs for a while!”

Organisers cancel AQUA 2023 and Water Alive show

OATA Impact Exhibitions and OATA have jointly taken the decision to cancel this year’s AQUA 2023 trade show and consumer Water Alive event, planned for the autumn...

OATA Impact Exhibitions and OATA have jointly taken the decision to cancel this year’s AQUA 2023 trade show and consumer Water Alive event, planned for the autumn.

The show was due to run from Thursday 12 October to Saturday 14 October at Telford Conference Centre. For the first time in its history, the trade show was due to open its doors to fishkeepers in a joint element, called Water Alive, on the last two days of the show.

“It is regrettable this decision has had to be made but without the prospect that the event would break even then we could not commit to continue the show,” said Matt Stevenson, who sits on the board of OATA Impact Exhibitions, which organises the show.

“When the show’s organising committee started to look at the 2023 event, we knew we had to look at new ways to fund AQUA so it remained viable. The past few years have been a turbulent trading period for our industry, causing inevitable challenges to the trade and therefore the show’s income. Incorporating a consumer element has long been talked about within the show’s advisory group so OATA Impact Exhibition’s board made the decision to add a consumer element bringing the revenue to support AQUA,” he explained.

OATA Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee says the trade association is extremely disappointed the show will not proceed in 2023 and will take some time to explore options for the future.

“OATA understands the importance of the AQUA show to the industry,” he said. “Nevertheless, there was an undoubted need to change the show to ensure it remained financially viable so we understand why the organising committee decided to try something different with the format. We will now take stock and look at how a successful and profitable show could be organised in the future.”

Pet start-up companies are being given the chance to showcase their products in front of the largest collection of retailers and buyers at the UK’s pet industry exhibition in October.

They’re being offered the opportunity to exhibit in the PATS New Starter Zone, a space entirely dedicated to new businesses and start-ups.

The New Starter Zone, supported by trade association PetQuip, will be a popular feature at PATS Telford on Sunday, 1st October, and Monday, 2nd October 2023, as it will enable buyers to source new and innovative products all in one place.

Companies booking space within the Zone will benefit from a bespoke stand design and will receive a unique marketing package – including additional PR opportunities, social media platforms, enhanced listing within the PATS Telford 2023 Catalogue and email alerts to PATS visitors.

All exhibitors within the Zone will also have free-of-charge entry into the PATS New Starter Showcase. This gives exhibitors an opportunity to display one of their products, judged by Retail and Innovation Expert, Claire Gavin, who will award the Most Innovative Product award.

Claire will be holding a workshop during PATS, offering advice and guidance on getting a product to market as well as tips on what buyers are looking for – this will be exclusively available to exhibitors in the Zone.

She will be using her knowledge and experience gained as director of Pets at Home where she led the strategic development of private brands and innovation at the UK’s biggest pet retail group.

Having set up her own consultancy, Claire Gavin Innovations Ltd, she is now keen to pass on her expertise to start-up companies, starting at PATS Telford.

“PATS is our biggest UK pet specialty show and I’d recommend it as vital for anyone in the UK pet industry,” said Claire.

“I’m always looking for innovation to surprise and delight customers across the world, as well as meet new start-ups and entrepreneurial SMEs who bring new solutions to challenges that face every pet parent. And seeing all the British manufactured product makes me proud too.

“It’s actually pretty impossible for me to resist visiting PATS where I can see all the products and meet so many brilliant and inspiring suppliers under one roof.  If you’re in the pet industry, whether that’s as a retailer, distributor, supplier or manufacturer, it’s a must attend event.”

Nearly half of the stand space in the New Starter Zone has been booked by exciting new start-ups including Wyld Cub, No Fuss Fill, Injoya, Simon’s Kitchen, Snoots & Sploots, Paws in Earnest, Dot Dot Pet Co, Snif-Snax and DH Lifelabs (Dernier & Hamlyn).

The timing of PATS Telford is perfect for first-time exhibitor Snoots & Sploots, which markets pet businesses. “This summer we’re launching our pet business directories. We couldn’t think of a better place for our first official Snoots & Sploots event, and are really excited to meet other businesses that share our passion for furry friends,” said Samantha Lambert.

PATS Telford is set to be the largest-ever exhibition in the event’s history with three halls of Telford International Centre packed with companies eager to showcase their products and services.

Pet product retailers and buyers can now register for free entry to PATS Telford at the new look website www.patshow.co.uk where a full list of exhibitors can also be found.

Start-ups wishing to exhibit in the New Starter Zone should contact the Hattie King at the PATS organisers on 01892 862848.

Founded by Dan Valder Eha and Mathew Cockroft in 2012, Pure Pet Food manufactures and sells a unique and premium range of dog food and treats.  The business, which is backed by Mercia, aims to 'change dogs’ lives for the better’ and has enjoyed rapid growth in the UK, helped by the significant increase in dog ownership during 2020 – 2022 and a demand from consumers to feed their dogs healthy and nutritious food.

With a background in FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods), Roz spent 12 years with Warburtons as board Commercial Director and five years as CEO of Genius Foods. An experienced non-exec, Roz serves on the boards of MedaHuman Ltd, Babease Ltd and Lightbody Ventures Ltd.

Roz joined the team at Genius when it was an asset light business, employing 9 people and delivering a turnover of £7m. As CEO she led the company through a period of bakery acquisition and international expansion that saw Genius grow to £50 million turnover and the 'free from food' category leader.

To date, Pure Pet Food has shipped over 18 million meals and has grown from a small kitchen in Halifax to a 15,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility, employing over 50 people. Pure is seeking to build on that success by recruiting Roz, a highly experienced executive, to oversee the company's rapid growth and fulfil its ambition of helping millions of dogs improve their overall health.

Mat and Dan commented: “We are delighted to welcome Roz to Pure and are looking forward to working with her as we plot our next phase of growth in the fast-moving pet nutrition sector.”

Roz said: “Dan and Mat are truly inspirational founders with a passion for creating something pet owners are desperately looking for. I am delighted to be joining the business at such an exciting time.”

Change of premises pays off for pet store

Moving premises from an industrial estate to a busy high street has paid off for a family-run pet store...

Moving premises from an industrial estate to a busy high street has paid off for a family-run pet store.

Since the move last month, Frankie and Twinkle’s has witnessed an increase in footfall, leading to improved trading figures.

Owners Ruth and Malcolm Riley had run their business on an industrial estate for 18 months but decided it was time for a move. After an intensive search they found an empty unit in Seahouses, Northumberland.

“We’ve now got the first month in our new premises under our belt and have noticed a significant increase in trade due to being on the high street of a major tourist hotspot with passing trade and greater footfall, rather than being on an industrial estate in an outlying area,” said Malcolm.

“Although our new place is smaller than our old place we still have all the same stock available and if we don't have something we can usually get it in a few days. We try and concentrate our efforts on natural products which seems to be going down well with locals and visitors alike.”

Dechra takes on distribution of Porus One and Add One

Dechra has taken on the distribution of two innovative products to support kidney health in senior cats – Porus One and its sister product Add One...

Dechra has taken on the distribution of two innovative products to support kidney health in senior cats – Porus One and its sister product Add One.

Porus One contains renaltec as its active ingredient, a selective absorber that absorbs the precursors of uraemic toxins in the cat’s intestine that would normally be removed or regulated by healthy kidneys.

A breakthrough in the support of long-term kidney health, Porus One is an easy to administer powder that can be taken daily with food and is well accepted by cats due to its neutral taste and smell.  The powder is a collection of miniature spheres covered in microscopic pores that harmlessly pass through the cat's gut binding to the uraemic toxins.  These toxins and spheres are then safely excreted into the cat's faeces.

Porus One can be sprinkled on wet cat food or given with its sister product, Add One, as a treat.  Add One is a moist and tasty cat treat for senior cats to help support kidney health.  It has been specifically developed to encourage cats to eat Porus One and is particularly helpful for cats that prefer dry food.  It is available in two flavours, creamy salmon and tasty liver.  Add One contains omega-3 and a high moisture content, which is key to help support kidney health.  It also contains taurine to support a cat’s eyes and heart.

“Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions affecting older cats and it is estimated that approximately 80% of cats aged 15 plus have the disease,” comments Sarah Musgrave, companion animal brand manager at Dechra.  “Porus One, with the support of Add One, offers breakthrough daily kidney support for cats and is ideal for senior cats to support long-term kidney health.”

One box of Porus One contains 30 single-dose sachets, each containing 500mg of renaltec.  One box of Add One contains 30 single-dose 10mg sachets.

'PAWS' for thought: Pet and Animal Wellbeing at Glee

PAW: Pet and Animal Wellbeing at Glee (27th-29th June 2023, NEC Birmingham) - will showcase pet care and wellbeing with the best of British and overseas pet suppliers to garden centre buyers who are capitalising on the ‘pet pound’...

PAW: Pet and Animal Wellbeing at Glee (27th-29th June 2023, NEC Birmingham) - will showcase pet care and wellbeing with the best of British and overseas pet suppliers to garden centre buyers who are capitalising on the ‘pet pound’.

The UK is a pet loving nation

Recent research from the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association revealed that 3.2 million UK households have acquired a pet since 2020, and its data is predicting that by the end of 2023 16.2 million (households, or 57% of the population, will have a pet. With dogs remaining the most popular choice with over 12 million households being home to a pooch, and 11 million the domain of cat owners, it’s little wonder that the pet products that address animals’ distinct requirements and foster stronger connections between owners and their pets have witnessed exponential growth in the last three years.

Pet within garden retail

HTA Retail Monitor shows that pet sales within garden centres were up 31% in February 2023 compared to the same month in 2021.  With sales rising, and pet owner numbers staying strong, now is the optimal time for garden retailers to review their pet offering to establish an offering that focuses on trends, core lines and gifting opportunities to suit the many demands of these so-called pet parents.  Perfectly positioned to support this potential is PAW at Glee, where a host of established and emerging pet brands come together to showcase new products and pet services, whilst helping retailers to understand the value of the pet pound and how the humanization of pets is changing the landscape.

Pet trends to see at Glee

1. Nutrition and diet specific feeds

Natural ingredients, hand-made products, no plastics – many of today’s fastest-growing ‘human’ lifestyle choices are now shaping how we care for our pets, with diet and nutrition one area where the change has been most dominant.

Like never before, consumers are scrutinising pet meals as they would their own, whether it be organic, vegan or diet solutions. As a result, manufacturers are now offering food and treats that reflect these differing diet needs.

Representing this at PAW at Glee this year will be Eden Holistic Pet Foods (stand 7B50) whose balanced natural pet food has been developed with nutritionists and by FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) standards. Sabre Pet Food (stand 7A54) will also be promoting its Alpha Spirit brand whose mission is to manage the well-being and natural feeding of pets, by offering a collection of products that closely resemble the food they would have enjoyed in the wild.

There has also been a notable rise in the popularity of raw dog food as pet owners become more concerned about the ingredients of processed pet food and look to introduce more ‘natural’ diets that replicate the diet of our beloved canines’ wild ancestors. Experts in this field and ready to educate garden retailers at Glee will be Nutriment (stand 7C41), who supply only the best raw ingredients for its dog and cat food, sourcing premium British wherever they can, to deliver essential, high-quality nutrition to our canine and feline friends. Look out for natural treats such as The Cinnamuncher’s (stand 7B51) Ceylon cinnamon-wood dog chew sticks which are not only packed with flavour but will clean their teeth and calm dogs. Other sustainable treats available to source at Glee include an insect offering from Mr Bug (stand 7C50) which breeds its own mealworms in Devon for protein-packed food that has a significant impact on digestion, absorption and muscle production.

2. Accessorising your pet

By sharing our health and wellness preferences with our pets we feel they will be well cared for, comfortable and at their best. In short, we’re not only treating them as part of the family but also, effectively, human.  This ‘humanisation’ trend has been highlighted by major market studies for several years, with pet fashion, accessories and pet gifts one of the first areas where the trend was identified.  Gifting periods now feature our pets more than ever, with One Poll reporting that 25% of Brits buy a birthday present for their pets.  In fact, it has been reported that whilst eight in 10 consumers have changed their grocery shopping habits to save money, only one in 10 pet owners have cut back on what they spend on their animals. It finds 42% spoil pets with treats and gifts even though their budgets are tight, with more than half of dog owners indulging their pooches with Christmas stockings.

With consumers so willing to spend on their pets, it’s vital that retailers have the right products stocked to respond accordingly.  Think doggy birthday presents and Christmas stockings, all of which will be available to source at PAW. Look out for Benchmark Kennels (stand 7A46-B41) who fit this luxury gift mould offering only the highest quality materials and the most comfortable living solution for your dog.

Elsewhere, the award-winning, family-run business will return to PAW Goodchap’s (stand 7B53) to showcase its healthy dog treats plus an updated range of eco-friendly and plastic-free dog toys.

Representing the best of pet clothing will be Hem & Boo (stand 7C43) who is debuting at Glee in 2023 with a selection of collars, leads and beds.  Trinkety Paws (stand 7C45) – the brand behind The Canine Cottage boutique - will be on hand to show retailers its on-trend UK-made dog collars and dog leads in the latest on-trend colours. Another new exhibitor will be Twiggy Tags (stand 7C47) who be on site with its practical and hard-wearing dog gear designed for outdoors owners seeking an adorable outfit for their pets.

3. Engaging with nature

The events of the last few years have positively influenced our relationship with nature and wildlife. In times of turmoil, more than ever, people have turned to their gardens to support both physical and mental wellbeing, whilst the ongoing climate crisis has moved many to protect their own little corner of nature.  This renewed focus on nature has opened up a new sales opportunity for retailers by presenting products to encourage wildlife into the garden in a fresh and new way.  Supporting this growth at PAW will be long-term exhibitors WHM Pet Group (stand 6F50-G51) with its Honeyfield’s Wild Bird brand will showcase its leading portfolio of wild bird food, treats, wild bird feeders, tables, dining stations and accessories.

Opening a window to the wild will be Green Feathers (stand 7B40) with its Wi-Fi bird box cameras and wildlife cameras, whilst Unipet International (stand 7C55) will be on hand also with the latest suet-based treats with its Suet-To-Go collection.

Matthew Mein, Event Director at Glee commented: “PAW has been developed so retailers can capitalise on the increasing “pet-pound” trend and the uplift in pet ownership that we’ve seen over the past few years. The pet industry continues to boom, and we have a wealth of exhibitors in this show sector that can put pet care at the forefront of garden centres sales.  Visiting the PAW: Pet and Animal Wellbeing sector at Glee will equip staff with the tools and knowledge to advise pet owners and be instrumental in helping to drive growth for retailers who put a real focus on pet products in 2024.

“What’s more, Glee’s wider product portfolio means that garden centre buyers can access not just pets but everything else to complete their overall offering. A true one-stop-shop, time spent at Glee will deliver a significant return on investment and set retailers up for both the remainder of the 2023 season and throughout 2024.”

The Dog-G8 Company, which recently appeared on BBC One’s Dragons’ Den, has been granted a patent for its innovative concertina dog gates.

The company produces a range of versatile gates that aid dog owners with training, prevent dogs from escaping, and reduce the potential risk of an attack on postal and delivery workers.

The Dog-G8 Company is also one of only 10 companies to make the finals of the Pet Industry Federation’s New Pet Innovation of the Year Award. The finals take place on 7 & 8 June at The Business of Pets Conference at Cranfield Management Development Centre, near Milton Keynes.

As part of the final judging process Dog-G8 will have the opportunity to present its range to an audience of business experts, industry influencers and fellow business owners. The winner will receive a trophy, PR coverage and the provision of a free year’s Sprintlaw Membership, valued at £400.

Dog walk aims to raise thousands for animal welfare

Announcing a new three-year partnership with English Heritage, the Agria Dog Walk UK will raise vital funds for animal rescues...

Back for its fourth year, the Agria Dog Walk UK is bigger and better than ever before. Announcing a new three-year partnership with English Heritage, the annual charitable event is calling for British pet parents and their canine companions to join thousands dogs and their families across Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway and Sweden, in putting their best paw forward to raise vital funds for animal rescues.

The dog walk marks the beginning of Agria’s support for English Heritage’s dog-friendly days out and owners can register online now to take part in a leisurely walk on Saturday 20th May at their closest participating site, choosing from Dover Castle, Kent; Witley Court and Gardens, Worcestershire; Pendennis Castle, Cornwall; Wrest Park, Bedfordshire and Birdoswald Roman Fort, Cumbria.

Tom Gannagé-Stewart, Head of Corporate Partnerships and Sponsorship, English Heritage, says: “English Heritage is thrilled to be partnering with Agria Pet Insurance over the next three years by joining forces to deliver an annual dog walk at five of our historic sites. This exciting new partnership will help the organisation continue its vital work as an independent charity, while also raising awareness of the 150+ dog friendly historic sites in our care.”

As PETA reports that 100,000 dogs are estimated to be homeless in the UK1, Agria, the UK’s best pet insurer, is set to donate £5* for every dog that walks the walk around the beautiful British countryside - with an aim of raising thousands of pounds for dogs in need.

Vicki Wentworth, CEO at Agria Pet Insurance, says: “It’s always so heart-warming to see dog lovers across the country unite to help to make a difference to the lives of animals in the care of rescues. We continue to see the cost of living crisis putting rescues under stress, so it’s never been more important to help to care for and rehome animals abandoned due to no fault of their own. Last year’s dog walk saw over 800 dogs in the UK, and over 18,000 across Europe, walked to raise funds of over £35,000 - and this year we have set our sights even higher.”

Pets offer 'lifeline' during cost of living crisis

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (15-21 May), a leading vet charity is advocating keeping pets and their owners together through the cost of living crisis...

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (15-21 May), a leading vet charity is advocating keeping pets and their owners together through the cost of living crisis.

Nearly all pet owners (94%) say that owning a pet makes them happy, according to new figures from the upcoming 2023 PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report – and their support has been vital, especially as many people have been forced to make drastic cutbacks to stay afloat.

While worrying figures have shown that as many as 770,000 owners are going without necessities in order to keep caring for their pets, almost half of owners (44%) have also said that their four-legged friend has been a lifeline during the cost of living crisis.

Nearly all (90%) pet owners felt having a pet improved their lives, a comfort which is especially important as many feel the impact of the cost of living crisis. This figure is higher especially among dog (91%) and cat owners (89%).

The findings also highlight the benefits of having a pet on overall health, with 87% stating owning a pet makes them mentally healthier. While over two thirds (67%) feel it makes them physically healthier – a figure that is even higher among dog owners (86%).

Meanwhile, at a time where many people are having to juggle energy bills and soaring living costs, which can prove isolating, furry friends are essential when it comes to providing companionship. For example, the figures show that over four in five pet owners (85%) say that owning a pet makes them feel less lonely.

PDSA Veterinary Surgeon, Lynne James, said: “Pets are family, and we know that pet owners will go to great lengths to ensure they can continue to care for their beloved pets. It vitally important that with everything pets do for us, we make sure that they have everything they need to live healthy and happy lives.

“Our latest figures show pets are invaluable, especially when their owners are going through hardship. As the cost of living crisis worsens, the work of charities like ours becomes vital, not only to provide essential veterinary care, but also to keep pets and their owners together in their time of need.

“In 2022, we provided veterinary care for over 390,000 pets, whose owners would otherwise have struggled to afford the cost and may even have had to resort to other options such as rehoming – the mental health consequences of which are unimaginable.

“As Mental Health Awareness Week approaches, I’d like to encourage pet owners who are struggling due to rising costs, and who are concerned about being able to afford the cost of veterinary treatment to reach out to us. Our website includes a free eligibility checker to find out whether they’re able to access our services, which is a great place to start.

“We also have lots of free advice on how to reduce the cost of caring for pets, while ensuring they remain healthy and happy – something we hope will take a mental load off for many pet owners through the cost of living crisis.”

PDSA relies on donations to deliver life-saving treatment to hundreds of thousands of pets across its 48 Pet Hospitals in the UK. To help keep pets and people together, the charity is urgently calling on the public’s support to prevent vulnerable people having to make a truly heart-breaking decision. To find out more about PDSA’s vital work during the cost of loving crisis, or to donate, visit www.pdsa.org.uk/costoflovingcrisis.

Shining light on brilliant vet nurses

For this Vet Nurse Awareness Month, IVC Evidensia has produced a video celebrating vet nurses and the varied roles that they take on during their careers. It starts with the line, “I am so much more than just a vet nurse”...

For this Vet Nurse Awareness Month, IVC Evidensia has produced a video celebrating vet nurses and the varied roles that they take on during their careers. It starts with the line, “I am so much more than just a vet nurse”.

This comes after several dynamic training strategies have been launched by the UK’s leading veterinary group, including a new VCA training programme, satellite learning for Vet Nurses and an upcoming Referral Nurse Development Programme, due to be announced soon.

The theme for this year’s VNAM is ‘Empowerment’, and the hope is that this video will shine a light on all the roles that vet nurses occupy in their careers, including being “a clinician, a friend, a mentor, a coach, a leader, an innovator, a lifesaver.”

Jessica Hotchin, Acting Chair of the IVC Evidensia Nurse Board, commented on the creation of the video: “In making the video, we wanted to make IVC Evidensia vet nurses feel supported in their roles, whilst showcasing the development and career opportunities open to them.

“Whatever exciting path they choose in their nursing career, whether that's specialising or generalising, working in practice or moving to a management position, we're here to support them every step of the way.”

Footage included in the video features many vet nurses within the IVC Evidensia family describing their specific roles, which include being a Clinical Manager, a Farm Tech, a Referrals Nurse, a Student Nurse, an ECC Nurse, a Consulting Nurse, an Equine Nurse and a Mental Health First Aider.

New pet food brand recognised for innovation

New Pet food brand, Caboodle, which is designed to tackle pet obesity, has been rewarded for its innovation by making the finals of the Pet Industry Federation’s Pet Innovation of the Year Award...

A new concept in pet nutrition for dogs which is designed to tackle pet obesity, Caboodle is one of only 10 companies to make the finals of the Pet Industry Federation’s New Pet Innovation of the Year Award. The finals take place on 7 & 8 June at The Business of Pets Conference at Cranfield Management Development Centre, near Milton Keynes.

As part of the final judging process Caboodle will have the opportunity to present their innovation to an audience of business experts, industry influencers and fellow business owners. The winner will also receive a trophy, PR coverage and the provision of a free year’s Sprintlaw Membership, valued at £400.

Caboodle also recently made the finals of The Best in Show Spotlight at the Pet Innovation Europe Show in Berlin, which showcases the latest innovations across Europe to drive partnerships and investment within petcare. Here Caboodle made some excellent business contacts which will result in new partnerships for them.

Caboodle is the brainchild of the company’s three founders who already have impressive pedigrees in the pet world. They are: Karen Hanton MBE, Founder of Top Table (sold to Open Table), Pets Pyjamasand Positive Luxury, Investor and serial entrepreneur. Gillian Quek, Co-founder of training centre The Dog House Trading Company who with Michelin Starred chef Michel Roux OBE created a range of premium treats and snacks for dogs and Simon Arkwright, an experienced strategist and innovation insight expert, working previously with Purina, Unilever and GSK.  Karen is also the proud owner of a Parson Jack Russell called ‘Wilson’ and Gillian owns a Chocolate Cockapoo, ‘Miso’

Caboodle which is based in Gloucestershire and started trading in the summer of 2022, was born from a mutual desire of its founders to combat the disturbing rise in pet obesity and to create effortless feeding solutions for today’s busy dog owners.   Delicious and nutritious dog food, treats and chews delivered in pre-measured daily boxes not only delight smaller dogs every day with great food and flavours, but also delight dog owners with the convenience of properly proportioned meals and daily treats taking the hassle and guesswork out of feeding their dog.

Pet obesity is an ever- increasing problem. In the UK alone, it is estimated that 51% of dogs are overweight or obese, which is only set to get worse. 81% of vets and nurses report seeing an increase in the number of overweight animals and according to a survey conducted by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2021, 1 in 14 dogs were recorded by their vets as being overweight each year. The study also found that certain breeds were especially prone to weight gain, including Pugs, Beagles and English Springer Spaniels. Obesity carries severe welfare risks for dogs. Obese dogs have shortened life spans, reduced quality of life and higher frequencies of some important conditions including arthritis, breathing problems, heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

There are other reasons as well why pet owners need to tackle the Battle of the Bulge with their dogs as founder Gillian Quek explains,

“In the past 3 years, pet insurance companies are increasingly rejecting claims for sick dogs if they are found to be overweight. Despite all of the shocking facts, our methods of feeding dogs have not changed in decades.

"My experience of over 20 years of running The Dog House, a renowned training centre in the UK, showed me that despite all the guidelines, advice and the best will in the world, most dog owners still can’t get food portioning right. We offered popular weight reduction programmes where we would achieve great results getting dogs back to their optimum weight, only to send them home where the pounds would quickly creep back on again.

"One of the most common issues we saw was owners using human food and treats to demonstrate their love for their dogs, without realising the calorie implications of a piece of bacon, half a sausage or the leftovers from their Sunday lunch.

"Whilst nobody intentionally wants to over feed their dog, it is so easy to do so without realising and it was from this personal experience that I realised something radical had to change. So in 2022, along with my like-minded partners Karen and Simon, Caboodle was born.”

Caboodle combines the most nutritious, healthy and varied flavours to create a selection of menus which will keep the fussiest of dogs satisfied and engaged. The varied diet also helps to prevent food allergies and intolerances. Combining wet and dry food and adding low-calorie treats and dental chews ensures that all the guesswork is removed from what to feed each day. Caboodle pre-portion daily meals and treats according to each dog’s weight, age, sex and activity level and deliver in planet-friendly packaging. Caboodle is also perfect for dogs who enjoy being by their human’s side all day long and great for taking away on long walks, trips and holidays with your dog.

Caboodle only uses the highest grade of ingredients and sources where possible from the UK and EU. Caboodle’s food contains no nasties and also incorporates a number of superfoods to give a dog all the added vitamins and minerals it needs for a happy and active life.

Caboodle has a strong D2C approach with their subscription boxes proving to be very popular but are also activating a number of B2B channels with key industry partnerships, pet-friendly hotels and restaurants, dog-friendly workplaces, convenience retail and the industry professional space. Caboodle has a Trustpilot score of 4.6, and an All About Dog Food top rating of 91%.

The range of products is developing all the time as Gillian concludes,

“We are constantly aiming to create more flexibility and choice for the customer. We are also focused on combating and reducing dog obesity through our products but also by educating the owner to take greater responsibility for their dog’s health and wellbeing.

We aim to keep improving Caboodle using the development of AI so we can more accurately provide a product that is tailored to a specific dog’s needs. For Caboodle - the sky's the limit, we have a vision to create hassle-free solutions for pet owners in Europe and further afield, making lives easier in today’s increasingly complicated world.“

Furr Boost, the healthy hydration smoothie drink that scooped the Best Product Innovation Awards at both PetQuip and the PIF Awards is launching a new 400 ml carton which is better for larger dogs, more cost effect and reduces environmental waste.

The brand is also one of only 10 companies to make the finals of the Pet Industry Federation’s New Pet Innovation of the Year Award. The finals take place on 7 & 8 June at The Business of Pets Conference at Cranfield Management Development Centre, near Milton Keynes. As part of the final judging process Furr Boost will have the opportunity to present their innovation to an audience of business experts, industry influencers and fellow business owners. The winner will also receive a trophy, PR coverage and the provision of a free year’s Sprintlaw Membership, valued at £400.

To add to their accolades, Furr Boost has also made the finals of the Start-Up Awards which take place this month at the Custard Factory in Birmingham on 18 May. They are nominated for Innovative Start-Up and On-line Retailer Start-Up for the Midlands Region.

The smoothie drinks were created by a former technical manager to the food industry with over 20 years’ experience, Louise Toal  after her Beagle, Phoebe at the age of 18 months became unwell with bladder problems which after investigations with her vet, were linked to the dog’s food.

Using her technical background, Louise then started experimenting with protein shakes to help flush out Phoebe’s system and to provide her with the hydration that she needed when she was refusing to drink enough water in the summer months. This led to the creation of the Furr Boost range of smoothies.

Since launching, Furr Boost has seen its customer base grow online with a healthy presence on e-commerce websites but it is also now looking to expand its retail operation. The business is receiving a high level of international enquiries for the drinks and is currently exploring export opportunities.

There also plans to introduce new varieties in the near future. The brand is supported by a number of ambassadors and social media influencers and currently sponsors British Flyball Teams, Dog Agility competitors with interest also from the Canicross community who use the drinks to give their dogs instant hydration.

Not only are the drinks ideal for active dogs but they are also great to give senior dogs when they are nearing the end of their lives as they provide comfort and balanced nutrition.

High levels of lead found in raw dog food

Dogs may be at risk from high levels of lead from shotgun pellets in raw pheasant dog food, a study by Cambridge University researchers has found.

The researchers tested samples of raw pheasant dog food and discovered that the majority contained high levels of lead that could put dogs’ health at risk if they eat it frequently.

Lead is a toxic metal that negatively affects body systems of people and animals, with the nervous system being particularly sensitive. Although elevated levels of dietary lead are potentially damaging to animal health, lead shot can be legally used for hunting terrestrial gamebirds, like pheasants, in the UK. While most pheasants are eaten by people, some are used in petfood.

Cambridge researchers analysed 90 samples taken from three raw pheasant dog food products bought in the UK and found that 77% of samples had lead concentrations exceeding the maximum residue level (MRL) permitted in animal feed according to law. Mean lead concentrations of the three products were approximately 245, 135 and 49 times higher than the MRL.

“We were already aware that lead concentrations in pheasant meat sold for human consumption are often far higher than would be permitted in other meats like chicken, beef or pork,” said lead author Professor Debbie Pain of Cambridge’s Zoology Department. “However, we were surprised to find that lead concentrations in raw pheasant dog food products were so much higher.”

The mean lead concentration in the raw pheasant dog food analysed was 34 times higher than that recently reported in pheasant meat sold for people to eat, which itself is considered to be too high. Researchers say this could be because raw pheasant meat is normally minced when used for dog food whereas whole birds or pheasant breasts are generally sold for human consumption. Mincing may fragment lead shot, increasing the number of small lead particles in the meat and the potential for lead to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

The researchers say that dogs eating food with such high concentrations of lead, especially if they are fed on it frequently or as their main diet, are at risk of harm to their health. Puppies are particularly vulnerable both because young animals tend to absorb more of the lead they swallow than full-grown animals, and the developing nervous system is particularly affected by lead.

The scientists tested five pheasant-based dog food products. Three of these were raw meat products, one was a dried pheasant and partridge product, and one was a processed tinned pheasant and goose-based product. Three equivalent chicken-based petfood products (raw meat, dried and processed) were also assessed.
