Operations director Kate Byrne told Pet Trade Xtra: “We created the Bessie & Boo brand because the concept is predominantly for cat and dog owners, and felt that a small boutique style store needed a name that reflected the new type of layout and ranges on offer.
“We are really pleased with the way the store has been received and definitely plan to open more Bessie & Boo stores.”
And regional business manager Kate Twigg added: “We are already looking for other suitable locations for this concept.”
The Valley Shopping Park was excited to see the Bessie & Boo store open at the complex.

A pet shop in Finchley, North London, will close its doors for the final time on Saturday with online shopping being blamed for the store’s demise.
Over the years Dunlop Pet Shop on Long Lane has suffered many setbacks, including burglaries and a major fire, but owner Stephen Dunlop says he can no longer compete with the internet.
The 63-year-old started work in the shop 47 years ago to help out his parents while they went on holiday. It turned into a job for life and he even met his wife Gill in the store as she was a regular customer.
“I’ve seen a lot of changes down this street,” said Stephen. “There used to be three greengrocers, three butchers and four bakers but they’ve all gone now, killed off by the supermarkets and the internet.
“The fact that Barnet Council won’t give us 30 minutes free parking on the high street hasn’t helped either.”
Stephen is set to retire but his son Simon will continue to work in the fishkeeping industry. He runs a fish tank maintenance and installation business called Happy Tanks, which he built up at Dunlop Pet Shop.
Simon said: “This Saturday is going to be a very sad day. We have a loyal and decent customer base but the younger generation are not coming because they’re buying things like pet food and fish tanks on the interent.
“We used to see a hundred people coming in on a Saturday but now we’re lucky if we get 45 or 50.”

GA launched the competition at PATS Sandown in March with Partners ordering Grain Free Duck, Sweet Potato and Orange being entered into a prize draw.
Luke has been a Partner of GA’s for number of years and has a wide range of own branded product which he sells very succesfully.
He is a particular fan of the Grain Free Range and says: “Bailey’s dogs woof it down – any dogs who don’t must be barking.”

PATS Telford in September is set to have a strong international presence with a growing number of overseas pet buyers expected to attend the autumn showpiece.
The PATS team had a stand at the recent Interzoo show and huge interest was shown in the UK’s No 1 pet trade exhibition.
Organiser Gordon Thomas has been exhibiting at Interzoo since 2010 and interest in PATS has grown significantly with each visit.
“We were primarily there to raise the awareness of PATS internationally and to encourage large European retailers and distributors to visit and of course do business with our exhibitors who are interested in exporting,” said Gordon. “We will have over 180 exhibitors at PATS Telford, and 81% of them are exporters.
“Buyers from many European countries showed real interest in visiting our show in September,” said Gordon. “On our Interzoo stand we had visitors from the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Switzerland, Croatia, France and Hungary, and there were even enquiries from Indonesia, Egypt, China, Jordan and the USA.
“UK pet products are very popular and representatives from international pet companies could see the advantage of meeting up with British suppliers under one roof.
“They agreed that PATS is the perfect venue to discover what’s new in the market for the year ahead, and an ideal opportunity to talk to UK-based manufacturers and suppliers.”
With its proximity to both Birmingham and Manchester airports, Telford International Centre – the home of PATS in September – is an ideal location for international visitors.
PATS organises a package for International visitors that includes an invitation to the PetQuip Awards dinner on the evening of Sunday, September 25th. At the show itself there will be an International Business Centre, where visitors from overseas will be able to hold meetings with UK suppliers. PetQuip team members will also be available to provide business services, sourcing advice and arrange introductions to UK pet companies.
PATS Telford is already shaping up to be one of the most successful events in the show’s eight-year history.
Amanda Sizer Barrett MBE, director general of PetQuip, said: “Last year at PATS Telford there was a tremendous amount of interest from our overseas buyers. We know from their feedback that they are finding products that are very different from elsewhere. PATS is a very exciting place for them to be, and I believe this year’s show will be even better.”
Beco Pets have increased their stand space following a successful show last year, and co-founder George Bramble commented: “We were blown away by the number and quality of customers on our stand at PATS Telford in 2015, and also by the high quality of international buyers.”
Federica Gabasio, from Italy, and Lucas Lengyel, of the Czech Republic, visited PATS Telford last year and both agreed it was well worth the time and effort.
"PATS Telford provides a good overview of the British market. The trade show was well organised, and we felt very welcome," said Federica, while Lucas commented: "The organisation was excellent. There were signs everywhere. The welcome was also good, everyone was smiling and happy to see us.”

A 62-strong group of British pet care firms made up the largest ever contingent of exhibitors on the British pavilion at Interzoo 2016.
Commenting on the success of the show for the UK companies who launched numerous new and innovative products, PetQuip’s director general Amanda Sizer Barrett said: “The show organisers have announced that this year’s Interzoo was the largest in its history, with about 39,000 trade visitors from more than 90 countries. This represents a 5% increase on the previous year.
"Once again, we found that many of the major international buyers were attracted to the UK stands. This was helped by the excellent location of the main British Pavilion, which was positioned near the entrance to the show.
"The variety and quality of the British products proved popular with show visitors and, in addition to actual export orders received at the show, we are confident that the numerous leads received will be converted into actual sales.”
On the British pet industry information stand, organised and manned by PetQuip, the visiting buyers included many from the main European markets including several from Portugal and Spain, as well as some smaller markets such as Macedonia, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania and Slovakia.
From further afield, distributors and retailers from markets such as Russia, Argentina, Colombia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Kenya, Egypt, India and even the Seychelles were seen.
There were also a number of buyers from the Middle East including several from Dubai, and also from markets such as Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan. Several of the meetings that took place have already generated sales leads for PetQuip member companies as well as providing potential contacts for future ‘Meet the Buyers’ events to be held by PetQuip in the UK.
Details of some of the latest products to be launched and early reactions from the British exhibitors are as follows:
- Howler & Scratch made its Interzoo debut and received new orders from Malta, Germany and the UK, as well as 127 sales leads from all over the world. Tracy Turczak, the international sales director for Howler & Scratch, a division of Phoenox Textiles said: “We’re thrilled with the response to our first visit here. Phoenox Textiles has been manufacturing in the UK for 60 years and the new line of rugs for ‘soggy moggies and muddy puppies’, with its hard wearing, super absorbent soft pile that is washable at 30 degrees, has been an instant hit."
- Hing Designs exhibited itsnew display stands for both the Dome Bowl and Bone Bowl for the first time at Interzoo, and John Dixon, a director of Hing, Fressnapf confirmed its orders at the show. “Being part of the British Pavilion attracted quality leads and we had a great show. We met with leading pet retailers in the US and Europe and made some very good contacts in Eastern Europe,” said John.
- Benevo vegan pet foodwas featured in the local German press and this proved to be a draw for many of the German retailers. The company also received good enquiries from Spain and Croatia.
- Poo Guard exhibited at Interzoo for the first time, and Kevan Norton from the company was happy with the level of interest expressed by retailers worldwide in Poo Guard, which kills viruses and bacteria left behind by dog poo. He stated that buyers from at least 20 different countries have been on the stand, illustrating how important this type of product is for the market.
- PetTime launched a new communication system for dogs that consists of a wireless hub comprising a camera, microphone and treat dispenser that enables the owner to see and speak with the pet when they are left at home alone. The tagline is ‘PetTime, anytime’.“We have had particularly good leads from Italy and Japan,” said Keith Wiggins.
- Oggie’s Oven unveiled TheTrikka, a two-in-one training clicker and treat dispenser that was hailed as an industry first by many who visited the stand. Training clickers are a tried and tested method of training a dog. A ‘click’ followed by an immediate treat after good behaviour means the dog associates the click with a reward. The Trikka allows the handler to click and dispense a treat in one action. The dual button system, red for a click, brown for a treat, allows both functions to be performed independently if needed. The Trikka is supplied with 30g of chicken and sweet potato treats in a presentation box.
- Source Pet Health launched a new range of natural pet supplements that contain no artificial preservatives or flavourings. The dosing is made simple by using a unique twist- off ampoule. The product is suitable for both large and small dogs and helps joint mobility, the immune system and skin and coat. Mike Dixon of Source Pet Health said:”The product has been a long time in planning and I feel very emotional about being able to launch these products; the whole project means a lot to me. The response has been tremendous."
- Pooch & Mutt also drew much attention from world buyers for its new 75% meat treats that are available in duck, chicken and salmon flavours.
- Barking Heads displayed brand new packaging for the Barking Heads and the AATU ranges, as well as a new range of treats. The range comprises new Bailey Bites with five titles including Love Hugs. There are also handmade, oven baked and gluten free puppy treats, called Milkies. The new AATU range includes five flavours of oven- baked single protein treats available in 150g handy pouches.
- Akela Wholeprey introduced complete wet foods for dogs. Contained in handy tins, the products are grain-free, gluten-free, hypoallergenic and vet approved. Also new is Suffolk Duck, an 80/20 meat/vegetable product that has received a 5-star rating by the Which magazine.Akela also produces food for cats and ferrets.
- Symply, Canagan and Piccolo exhibited itspremium nutrition for cats and dogs, andcemented deals with several leading retailers across three continents. Company owner Eddie Milbourne was understandably pleased with his four days at Interzoo and also complimented PetQuip on the organisation of the British Pavilion. He said: “I wouldn’t know where to start when organising something like this. Thank you for what you have done; we have had an excellent show."
“The potential for British exporters of pet products and accessories around the world is huge," Amanda Sizer Barrett confirms.
“More than 40 per cent of German households own a pet, which is why so many retailers flock to Interzoo and other such major trade events.
"In addition, European households in general own more than 285 million pets with major markets being Russia, Italy and France. In fact, the overall European market grew by 1.6 per cent in 2015, with the global market for pet care rising to 92 billion euros in 2015. There’s just over two weeks until national Bring Your Dog To Work Day – Britain’s favourite day at the office organised by HOWND.
On Friday 24th June, businesses from across the UK will welcome their dog loving employees into the workplace along with their loyal (and well-behaved!) four-legged companions. The day aims to raise money for All Dogs Matter, a charity which rehomes hundreds of dogs every year in London and Norfolk, while promoting the benefits man’s best friend in the workplace.
This year’s event has already seen a number of different organisations support the initiative – including pet product businesses, marketing agencies, a private jet company, an online bingo website and even a regional police force.
Dog-loving celebrities have voiced their support too, including Ricky Gervais and Rachel Riley. The event was so popular last year that the hashtag #BringYourDoToWorkDay trended on Twitter and was mentioned on Instagram over 9,000 times. It also scooped an acclaimed pet industry marketing award for its traction and reach.
Since its conception three years ago, Bring Your Dog To Work Day has become a regular staple in the national calendar. Recent figures support this thinking, with employment website Reed.co.uk estimating that 8% of employees in Britain have permission to bring their dogs to work.
Plus, an American study published in 2012 summarised that dogs at work may make a positive difference by reducing stress levels in staff and increasing their levels of job satisfaction.
It’s this benefit to employee wellbeing - plus the desire to raise money for animal welfare charities – that led to the creation of Bring Your Dog To Work Day by Mark Hirschel and Jo Amit, the co-founders of pet product company HOWND.
The day will again raise money for All Dogs Matter, a charity that rehomes hundreds of dogs every year in London and Norfolk. Businesses can donate online (minimum of £50) to take part and become a sponsor, while individuals can gift online or via text (minimum of £2 online, or £1 via text).
“We were overwhelmed with how successful Bring Your Dog To Work Day has become. The reception to the idea blew us away and it was amazing to see how many posted their dogs at work across all social media platforms,” explains Jo Amit.
“Most importantly, it was fantastic to raise money for a cause that has always been close to our hearts – the wonderful work of All Dogs Matter. We’re hopeful that this year will prove even more popular, building on the momentum of 2015.”
Bring Your Dog To Work Day also invites participants to use the initiative as a sponsored event to raise funds for charities that are close to their hearts, using the hashtag #BringYourDogToWorkDay.
“This year we wanted to open Bring Your Dog To Work Day up to businesses and organisations that want to fundraise for charities of their choice. Considering the participation rate in previous years, we think this could be a powerful way to spread the popularity of the event,” adds Jo Amit.

Pets Corner has opened an additional store in Crawley, creating four new jobs.
The store, which is located in the Squires Garden Centre on Horsham Road, opened its doors to the public for the first time on Saturday 28th May.
The company’s focus is on providing the best possible advice to help customers care for their much loved animal family members through knowledgeable and friendly classroom trained staff, great products that last and the best animal welfare in the industry.

A company called Bark & Co. have launched a pop-up shop called “BarkShop Live” in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood that lets dogs shop for themselves.
The shop allows dogs to play with toys in an open, specially curated space, using technology to help their human owners track what they like and don’t like.
As each dog plays, a BarkShop belt they are made to wear interacts with RFID tags in all the toys. It sends radio signals to a mobile app on the smartphone of the dog’s owner, allowing them to see what their dog prefers playing with.
The app also saves a recap of the pooch’s playtime, and allows its owner to simply tap and purchase their dog’s favorite item, which can be shipped directly to their home. The pop-up shop is running until Sunday.
“We made this investment as an experiment to see if there’s a way for dogs to do their shopping instead of humans,” said Matt Meeker, CEO and co-founder at Bark & Co.
The pop-up shop is available by appointment only, which dog owners can schedule for their pets for $30. The amount of the ticket can be applied towards purchasing products for their dogs inside the BarkShop Live shop. The brand has sold 150 tickets so far with the space catering up to five dogs at a time.
The play area features some of Bark & Co.’s most popular toys, which have been made available to its subscription box subscribers and through its e-commerce store so far. The shop is a test run for the brand as it looks for newer ways to expand its retail footprint.
“We may do more of this either as a permanent setup or more pop-up versions ,” said Meeker. “It’s really about extending the brand, attracting new and old customers in new ways and selling them the best products and experiences out there.”
Since launching in 2012 with BarkBox, a monthly subscription box of treats and toys for dogs, Bark & Co. has expanded its offerings. It has created its own products and launched BarkPost, a publication for dog owners that began as a company blog as well as BarkShop, an e-commerce store which opened in 2014.

PDSA vets in Margate carried out lifesaving surgery on a dog struck down by a mystery illness – and discovered a tennis ball in his stomach.
One-year-old Labrador, Henry, was taken to PDSA’s Pet Clinic in Margate, The Frank and Ethel Fright Centre, by owners Howard and Dawn Elvy when he stopped eating and began crying with pain.
“Henry usually enjoys his food, so when he went off it we were worried,” says Howard. “He was crying loudly and was clearly in a lot of pain, so we took him straight to PDSA.”
Henry underwent emergency tests to find the cause of his illness. His worried owners were shocked when an x-ray revealed a tennis ball was blocking his stomach.
Howard said: “We were worried sick. It must have been really nasty for him and it’s terrible to think the blockage could have killed him.”
PDSA Vet Nurse, Christopher Russell, said: “Henry was seriously ill when he was brought to see us. The ball was causing a blockage which, if not removed, would have eventually killed him. He had to undergo major surgery to remove the ball, but thankfully it went well and he’s since made a full recovery.”
Once removed, relieved owners Howard and Dawn recognised the ball as one of Henry’s they had last seen several weeks earlier while playing at the beach.
Howard added: “We treat Henry as one of the family and he means the world to us both. As pensioners, we couldn’t possibly have afforded his treatment, so we’re both very grateful to the vets and nurses at PDSA for helping Henry.”
Two out of every three pets that receive free veterinary treatment from PDSA are funded from gifts in wills and for a limited time PDSA is offering a Free Will-writing service to over 50’s.
Vet Nurse Christopher adds: “Donations such as gifts in wills fund our operations, so we hope local residents will continue to support our work caring for local sick and injured pets by considering leaving a gift in their will.”

Reflecting the growing popularity of Rally Obedience, there were 170 entries at the first competition run by Best Paw Forward Rally Obedience Club at Melton Mowbray.
The competition was sponsored by CSJ, who have a long tradition of support for dog sports – from show to Sleddog racing – and organiser Sabine Kanzaria said: “It went brilliantly, everyone commented on how well run the show was and what a great venue it was.
"Rally Obedience is growing, especially now that it will have its own inter-regional competition at Crufts from 2017.

Renowned equestrian sculptor and artist, Belinda Sillars, has launched a greeting cards collection featuring her beloved dogs.
The Naughty Dogs Collection is made up of six cards: Speed Trap, Eggstraction, Traption, Entraption, Distraction and That’s Another Fine Mess. All feature Belinda’s dogs: Trouble, Dobby, Humphrey and Roo.
“As anyone who’s met me knows, I adore my dogs,” said Belinda.
“So much so that my family of animals accompanies me wherever I go. If you’ve seen me at a show, you’ll have seen my dogs too. They are a constant source of inspiration and amusement and led me to write my book ‘In Trouble Again’, before capturing their antics on greetings cards.”
The collection features fun drawings by Belinda depicting her dogs and the mischief they get up to in the Suffolk countryside. All cards are A5 in size and are blank inside.

Curiosity nearly killed the cat when Teleigha, a five-year-old puss from Blackpool, gobbled up a fishhook, requiring lifesaving emergency surgery at vet charity PDSA.
Teleigha’s owner, Linzi Maddocks (46), said: “My son was packing his fishing gear while Teleigha was on the sofa, she seemed uninterested. But suddenly she jumped down, grabbed the hook in her mouth and swallowed it. It didn’t even have any bait on it, but I think the shiny silver attracted her.”
The family tried to help but quickly realised the hook was nowhere to be seen. So Linzi called the PDSA Pet Hospital on Hawes Side Lane in Blackpool and was advised to bring Teleigha straight in.
PDSA Senior Vet, Jen Jackson, said: “Teleigha seemed fine when she arrived, but an x-ray showed the fish hook in her stomach. Although tiny, if left it could easily have pierced her intestines or damaged a major blood vessel, which could have been fatal. It’s just as well the family saw what happened and brought her in.”
Vets and nurses at PDSA performed an emergency operation to remove the fishhook. Teleigha stayed overnight and was able to go home the next day.
Linzi continued: “Teleigha was very glad to return home and she made a really quick recovery. PDSA have been brilliant. They’ve helped me over the last eight years after I was made redundant following health issues. They’re amazing!
Linzi, who already hides her jewellery from Teleigha’s curious paws, is now careful to keep her son’s fishing equipment well out of reach too. “Teleigha is a total diva and is so mischievous we have to be very careful. But she’s so adorable, she’s definitely worth the fuss!”
