As the new sponsor of the Guinea Pig Village at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park in Suffolk, award-winning small animal brand HayPigs! has designed and built a collection of guinea pig sized houses for the resident piggies.

The pint-sized builds include a café, nail bar, church, pub and convenience store, each lovingly designed and crafted to provide not only a visual treat for visitors, but also an exciting enrichment environment for the piggies.

“This really was a dream project for us,” said HayPigs! co-founder Rik Cridland, a professional product designer before he launched the company.

“It’s something we’ve always wanted to do and if we were going to do it, our mission was to make it the best guinea pig village in the world!”

The project comes on the back of series of collaborations with Jimmy’s Farm which has included installing a large Pig Top circus tent and selling HayPigs! enrichment toys and treats in the Farm Shop. It helps celebrate 20 years of family, food and fun at Jimmy’s Farm.

“We love working with Jimmy’s Farm, they have the same sense of fun and adventure that we do and really care about their animals. All their staff have been so helpful and it’s just an absolute pleasure working with them," added Rik.

The resident guinea pigs at Jimmy’s Farm were quick to celebrate their new village enjoying breakfast at the café, an afternoon’s pampering and pedicure at the nail bar and an evening of raucous wheeking at the pub! Wheek! Wheek!

Market performance data revealed by Inspired Pet Nutrition has showcased the impressive growth of Wagg in the last fiscal year, with an increase in both online and in-store sales.

Wagg is one of the well-established and innovative brands that sit under the Inspired Pet Nutrition banner, and the consumer favourite has demonstrated its ability to delivery strong results in the market, despite difficult national circumstances.

Operating online, and in store for its extensive client base, Wagg has shown impressive market results, attaining the highest period on period growth across the pet food market.

Thanks to Wagg’s price match assurances, customers have been able to continue providing their pets with the best possible nutrition in the market, aligning with Inspired Pet Nutrition’s ethos of looking after ‘pets, people, and planet’.

\

The brand boasts impressive trading results on Amazon, showing growth ahead of the market rate, as well as demonstrating very strong sales in supermarkets. In Asda alone, Wagg has seen a +30% increase in value accompanied by +18% unit sales when compared with the first four months of the year.

Pet industry needs to 'level-up’ salaries of sales reps

Pet product suppliers are in danger of losing talented sales reps to other industries offering higher salaries and better benefits, according to a recruitment specialist...

Pet product suppliers are in danger of losing talented sales reps to other industries offering higher salaries and better benefits, according to a recruitment specialist.

Lynda Ward, owner of the award-winning Pet Trade Solutions, said: “Salaries for field sales roles in the pet industry have crept up over the past few years to a much more acceptable level, but they still have a way to go compared to similar roles in other industries.

“The pet trade is haemorrhaging experienced and respected people who simply cannot afford to say ‘No’ to better salaries offered in other sectors.”

Lynda added: “We also still have a huge disparity in wages for people carrying out the same roles. In general (depending on experience) a Territory Manager can expect to have a base salary of late £30ks to early £40ks plus a commission or bonus package…however some businesses still expect to attract good representation for less than £30k.

“Looking at ‘levelling-up’ from the same perspective as politicians – that is areas of the country – salaries in the pet industry have always been and generally remain much lower for territories outside London and the South-East. Is this fair?”

Lynda is happy to offer confidential advice on pet trade issues and can be contacted on 07946743784 or email lyndaward@pettradesolutions.com

The finishing touches are being put to the new Jollyes store in Poole, Dorset, which opens at Unit 1C, Wessex Gate East Retail Park, at 10am on Saturday (August 20).

Excitement is building ahead of the official opening of the 5,000 square feet store which will employ 10 colleagues, led by acting store manager Tom Amos.

Jollyes has prepared a paw-sitively enthralling line-up of events for owners and their pets, including the search for Poole’s best pets which begins today on community station Hot Radio. Lucky winners will each get a £35 Jollyes voucher and will be invited along to the opening event.

The Rev Bryony Morrison, of St James’ Church, close to the Poole store, has graciously agreed to bless pets and their owners before opening at around 9.50am.  Accompanied by her two border collies. Revd Morrison is planning a full pet blessing service at St James’ on Sunday, August 28.

And, with crossed fingers, subject to no last minute change of plans, one of Poole’s most famous residents, Barney the dog, has accepted an invitation to attend - along with Barney’s Dorset resident owners Harry and Sandra Redknapp.

Barney will take his lead for the opening from BCP chairperson Cllr Nigel Hedges and Hot Radio’s Karl Davies.

The full line-up of opening day events include:

  • Hot Radio live-linking from the opening
  • The winners of Hot Radio’s search for the cutest pets collect their prizes
  • Rev Bryony Morrison from St James’ Church, Poole, gives the store a blessing at 9.50am
  • A planned appearance by Barney the dog alongside owners Harry and Sandra Redknapp
  • Special guest, the chairperson of BCP Council, Cllr Nigel Hedges
  • A chance to win prizes on Jollyes’ iconic ‘Wheel of Fur-tune’
  • Goody bags for the first 100 customers
  • sample testing
  • balloons for kids.

Jollyes’ regional manager, Matt Godwin, said: “What better way to get the new store started than with a blessing? It’s going to be a very exciting day, with a great line-up of events and some well-known faces.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming owners and their pets from Poole and the surrounding area into our new store and to playing our part in the local community.”

Jollyes has announced more details of the ranges available at the new store, including dog and cat food, toys and accessories, food, treats and accessories for small pets, birds and fish. It will include Jollyes’ exclusive Lifestage dog food range, including dry food, trays and cans and its premium Lifestage Artisan dry food.

In the weeks after opening, the store will also host a Community Pet Clinic, offering regular health checks, vaccinations, flea and worming and microchipping.

As the first Jollyes store in Dorset, the Poole store will complement Jollyes outlets in neighbouring counties of Hampshire, Somerset, Devon and Wiltshire, including Bridgwater, Chippenham, Congresbury, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Waterlooville.

Backed by Kester Capital, Jollyes has more than 80 stores across the UK. In addition to recent openings in Stockton-on-Tees, Southport, Stirling, Wrexham and Cookstown, Jollyes this year acquired Penparc Pet Centres with five stores in the Midlands. New stores are due to open this autumn in Glenrothes and Edinburgh, as Jollyes continues to search for new locations across the UK.

Dog owners and pets prepare to walk 9K for charity

Tails and tongues are set to wag this August with the return of pawsome annual fundraising event, Wagathon, initiated by leading fundraising platform, Give as you Live Donate...

Tails and tongues are set to wag this August with the return of pawsome annual fundraising event, Wagathon, initiated by leading fundraising platform, Give as you Live Donate.

Dog owners across the UK are being encouraged to put on their walking boots and join their four-legged friends in walking 9K any day they like throughout August and raise vital charity funds.

Participants can choose to raise money for a charity close to their heart, whether it’s a local dog rescue centre or a well-known national charity — they all need support!

When dog owners sign up, they will receive a special welcome pack, including a Wagathon tag for their dog’s collar — plus, they will be in with the chance of winning some top prizes from Yappy and Scruffs.

It’s super-simple to get involved in the Wagathon challenge. All people need to do is:

1) Pick a charity to support

2) Create a Wagathon fundraising page

3) Share the page with friends, family and colleagues

4) Complete 9K with your K9s

Participants are encouraged to tag @thewagathonpack on Instagram and share their fundraising journey to be in the chance of winning a pawsome prize bundle! For further information, and to kickstart your challenge, visit: donate.giveasyoulive.com/pages/wagathon

Charlotte’s story

In memory of her beloved dog, Freddie, who passed away in June 2022, Charlotte Jones from Lapworth, Warwickshire, will be walking and running 9km every day during the month of August. She’ll be walking 279km in total to raise money for Fetcher Dog Charity.

Fetcher Dog was founded because thousands of dogs are born on the streets of Bosnia every year, condemned to starvation, disease and brutal, inhumane deaths.

Fetcher Dog aims to rescue as many of these dogs as possible and find them forever homes.

So far, Charlotte has reached 50% of her fundraising target. To donate, visit: donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/freddies-walk

Bobby’s story

Lynn Carr, from Seaham, County Durham, owns beautiful spaniels, Willow and Bobby. This August, the trio will be walking 9K in
the Lake District for a charity close to all their hearts, Spaniel Aid.

Back in 2017, when Bobby was only 8 months old, he was given to Spaniel Aid by owners who couldn’t look after him. He spent time in foster carer where he was taught simple things like walking on a lead. After seeing his picture on the charity’s Facebook page, Lynn applied to meet him.

Lynn says: “We visited Bobby with Willow to see if they got on and, a week later, Bobby came to join our family. Without this charity, we would never have come across our boy. For that, we are entirely grateful.”

Unfortunately, Bobby was one of dozens of spaniels up for adoption or needing foster carers. Spaniel Aid is funded entirely by donations and the generosity of the public and people who adopt dogs from them.

Harris and Bracken’s story

Fiona Reid, from Musselburgh, Scotland, and her gorgeous Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds, Harris and Bracken, are on a mission to walk 9K and raise as much money as possible to support a fellow Dachshund called Daphne.

Daphne was recently rescued by DMT Dachshund Rescue and Support Group, a charity that rescues Dachshunds from the meat trade in China and Korea with the clear mission that no Dachshund gets left behind.

Daphne has a broken leg, and someone sadly cut off her tail, leaving her with an infected stump. The charity wasn’t sure whether her leg could be saved at first; but, after examination, Daphne’s leg can be healed at a heavy cost of £3,700.

To support the charity and Daphne with this bill, Fiona, Harris and Bracken will be walking a 9k coastal walk this August in East Lothian.

To offer them suppawt, and to donate, visit: donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/fundraising-for-dmt-dachshund-rescue-and-support-group

Buddy’s tail

Daniel Hoole, from Chesterfield, is walking with his spaniel, Buddy, for Phoenix Heroes — a charity that supports veterans.

As a veteran himself, Daniel used Phoenix Heroes when he was suffering from PTSD and, through their support, he was able to get his life back on track by socialising with others, fishing and reflecting on the past.

Daniel says: “The charity is so special to me; they have helped me more than I could put into words. Completing Wagathon with Buddy is great as we are both doing what we love and helping others with similar situations to myself. I recommend this challenge to any dog owners as it’s a fantastic challenge to enjoy with your best friend.”

Instead of completing the 9km in August, Daniel and Buddy will be doing Wagathon around Remembrance Day in Snowdon.

Cheeky Wipes launches new reusable pet wipes range

Cheeky Wipes, the UK-based company that’s making it easy – and fun – to cut down on single use plastics, is launching an innovative new reusable range designed especially for pets. The Cheeky Pet collection features a selection of eco-friendly, washable alternatives to everyday disposable pet products.

Cheeky Pet is launching with three core products: a reusable treat bag, a washable, portable puppy training pad, and a comprehensive pet cleaning wipes kit, which features everything you need to keep your pets muck-free. Together, the products are designed to encourage pet owners and animal lovers to ditch the disposables, reduce waste, and minimise the number of products that end up in landfill and oceans, and polluting our planet.

The first new addition - and a must-have for any dog owner - is the Cheeky Pet PUL laminated treat bag. With a super soft plush feel, and secure zipped pockets, the bag can be taken out on any walk to help reward and reinforce positive behaviour.

The second product, developed with puppy needs in mind, is a foldable training pad, featuring a soft, absorbent bamboo cloth on one side, and a waterproof layer on the other to eliminate leaks and spills. Unlike regular pads which are disposed of after use, the Cheeky Wipes alternative is simply washed at 40 degrees, dried, and used again and again.

The third product in the initial Cheeky Pet line-up is a reusable pet cleaning wipes kit, which contains 10 soft and washable rainbow coloured bamboo terry wipes, and a double pocket wet bag to store wipes after use. Gentle on sensitive paws, the wipes are activated using water only, with absolutely no chemicals. They can also be used dry, making them ideal for sand, mud, and anything else dogs love to roll around in! Wash, dry, and use again. With zero waste.

Helen Rankin, Cheeky Wipes Founder, said: “Over the past few years, there has been a massive shift to more environmentally friendly, reusable baby products. For example, an increasing number of new parents are opting to use cloth nappies instead of disposables. However, most families have been unable to extend their green living efforts to pet care. There simply haven’t been the products that have enabled them to do so. That’s what we want to tackle with our new pet range; we want to show that making green choices is possible in every area of our lives, including caring for our four-legged friends.”

National Geographic reports that one third of all households across the world include at least one dog, with pets bringing many benefits to both physical and mental wellbeing. However, the environmental impact of pet ownership is increasing, with reports suggesting that UK pets are now responsible for an extra 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 than they were prior to the global health crisis. It’s clear that more needs to be done to reduce the carbon footprint of pets.

While reducing this environmental impact means focusing on some of the biggest offenders - such as pet food and toys - there are other elements that we must consider, too. This includes the use of disposables, such as puppy pads, cleaning wipes, and plastic food bags used to hold treats for walks. Non-biodegradable products do not break down, lasting for years in landfill and oceans, harming wildlife, and contributing to the microplastics crisis.

Switching for disposables to reusables is one of the easiest changes pet owners can make. Yet it could have one of the biggest, boldest impacts.

The new Cheeky Pet range is available now at www.cheekywipes.com

Pet specialist launches Dog Separation Anxiety Day

A dog lover from Guildford has created Dog Separation Anxiety Day to raise awareness of how dogs cope being home alone...

A dog lover from Guildford has created Dog Separation Anxiety Day to raise awareness of how dogs cope being home alone.

Jo Sellers realised her dog Reba struggled to be in a room alone, let alone in the house by herself, so studied the condition that an estimated six million dogs in the UK experience.

As an accredited dog trainer, she wanted to do something to help, so created Dog Separation Anxiety Day which takes place for the first time on Friday, September 30.

Jo, 52, who runs Pippin Pets Dog Training in Surrey, has helped Reba, a Cocker Spaniel and Bichon Frise cross, feel more confident when home alone and hopes the day will help dog owners understand how to spot the signs of Separation Anxiety and find ways to support their pets.

Jo said: “At the beginning, I really struggled with my puppy and what should have been the best time, was the worst.  I had no idea that dogs could panic being home alone, and I also was feeling trapped in my own home.  Initial advice only made things worse and I was upset, sleep deprived and felt so guilty that my puppy was crying so much after being told to keep her in her crate, don't return to her when she barks and leave her to cry it out.

“After finding a kind way of helping Reba, I was inspired to train as Certified Separation Anxiety Specialist and my mission is to raise the awareness so other dog owners don’t need to feel trapped and resentful of their dogs.

“The day is to highlight what to look out for, and how owners can watch their dogs and spot the signs if their dog is feeling anxious or stressed and find support.

“It’s estimated nearly six million dogs in the UK don’t feel happy being home alone, to varying levels of anxiety so the more dogs we help, the more owners will feel happier about popping out knowing their dog is safe, calm and relaxed.”

Jo is hoping that dog owners will join in and share their stories, and spread the word about Separation Anxiety in dogs, so owners who are struggling know the right help is out there.

Celebrity vet shares tips on how to keep pets cool

Dr Bolu Eso, resident vet at Butternut Box, has created a video to help owners keep their dogs cool during the hot weather conditions like the nation as just experienced...

Dr Bolu Eso, resident vet at Butternut Box, has created a video to help owners keep their dogs cool during the hot weather conditions like the nation as just experienced.

Here’s what he suggests:

If you find it’s hot outside then your dog will too. Walk your pet pooch earlier in the morning or later in the evening when it isn’t as hot. Always make sure you avoid the hottest parts of the day, from 12pm – 3pm. Don’t worry if they miss a walk during really hot temperatures, simply let them cool off in a dark, well-ventilated room instead.

Allowing your dog to have access to cool or cold water throughout the day is essential during extremely hot days. Make sure you provide your pooch with fresh water at all times - a collapsible water bowl or portable bottle is ideal if you’re on the go. You can also pop ice cubes in their water to really bring the temperature down for a refreshing treat.

Avoid taking your dog for walks on sand, tarmac and pavements, as they absorb the heat, meaning your dog could burn their paws due to extreme temperatures. A helpful way to check if the floor is safe is to place your hand on the surface– if it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your dog.

Cooling mats come in very handy during the hot weather, however you can make your own at home too. Keep your dog’s bed cool and offer relief from the heat with a towel which you firstly soak in water and then pop in the freezer.

Don’t leave your dog inside your car, the temperatures can become unbearable and can lead to a medical emergency.

Make sure you can spot the signs of heat stress (the dog equivalent of heat stroke): panting, vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea, or any signs of discomfort. If you spot these signs, a few ways to cool them down quickly is by taking them to grassy, shaded areas or using pools and sprinklers – any source of water you can use to cool them down!

If you think your dog is in serious distress from the heat, contact your vet immediately, as this could be a medical emergency.

Pet shop hit by fire plans to reopen

A planning application has revealed that a pet shop destroyed by a huge blaze last October hopes to reopen in the near future.

The 1st 4 Pets store in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, has remained closed since the fire but planning documents submitted to Erewash Borough Council say the ground floor would be restored with a new shop front and the upper floors converted into flats.

The planning report says the proposed works would enhance the building with a new shop front which would also remove some additions to the property which have been constructed over time.

This shop front would include a black aluminium frame and timber window frames, with the use intended for a small, local start-up business. A decision on the plans will be made by the borough council in the next few months.

Natures Menu has added to its well-loved Country Hunter range with the introduction of a Chicken with superfoods version.

The popular range has now been extended to feature a brand-new single protein option, which adds in one of the most popular protein sources in conveniently sized nuggets. This new addition is set to be a huge success for Natures Menu following the 34% growth within the range in 2021.

Featuring a blend of chicken and superfoods, the new addition endorses high-quality ingredients. Dog owners can relax when it comes to their pet’s diet knowing that Natures Menu values ingredient quality - as with the rest of the Natures Menu range, there are no artificial flavorings, preservatives, or colourings, and all meat is ethically sourced.

The Country Hunter range has already proven to be ever-popular with dog owners, due to the conveniency of the super meaty nuggets. Perfectly sized to make portioning up at mealtime more manageable, they also deter overfeeding for the dog and reduce the risk of food wastage. The nuggets deliver a powerful blend of meat, superfoods and those all-important vitamins and minerals, making for an overall high-quality complete and balanced meal with natural ingredients.

Melanie Sainsbury, Veterinary Expert at Natures Men, said: “The Country Hunter range was created to provide nutritional packed nuggets to allow owners to easily portion out their dog’s meal depending on their dietary needs. These innovative nuggets are a fantastic way to introduce a raw food diet to dogs and are a highly praised in many specialist pet stores all around the country.”

Natures Menu specialises in raw and natural dog and cat food made with fully traceable quality meats and fish, blended vegetables, fruits, and healthy carbohydrates - and uses British suppliers and ethical product sources wherever possible.

Dog-hydration expert teams up with leading boot brand

To celebrate National Dog Day next week (August 26), heritage boot brand Town & Country has teamed up with dog-hydration expert, Louise Toal, of Furr Boost, to make sure summer walking is as comfortable as possible for owners and their pets.

Walking your dog is beneficial to both of you; you get to spend time with each other and you both get some exercise in the fresh air. Summer is one of the best seasons to head out on a walk, bright mornings and light evenings are perfect for getting out more with your dog.

However, making sure you are both comfortable and hydrated is essential. It’s good practice to always be prepared when you take your dog for a walk, but in warmer weather especially.

Here is Louise’s expert advice to ensure that you and your dog stay happy and healthy this summer:

“Keeping your pooch comfortable and hydrated is vital to their health and happiness, especially during the summer months. But did you know that dogs need 3 to 4 times their normal water intake in hot weather, depending on their size and activity levels - and dehydration can be fatal for your dog. I suggest some simple tips for ensuring your dog remains hydrated during the warmer season; providing more water bowls, tempting with tasty treats, getting creative with refreshing fun and don’t forget drinks on the go!

“Of course, it is just as important for us dog parents to be comfortable throughout summer too, in the warmer weather you will benefit from lightweight boots or shoes when on those all-important summer walks.”

Town and Country offers a deluxe range of footwear which is made from quality materials and exceptional craftsmanship at an affordable price. Strong enough to withstand the great outdoors yet supple enough to provide great comfort and fit, the range is ideal for walking and gardening in all weather and providing maximum comfort and breathability for any summer hike.

BETA International is perfect platform for pet companies to extend ranges

BETA International is being seen as the perfect platform for pet companies to extend their product ranges into the equestrian market.

This is the view of family-run Goodchap’s, a newcomer to BETA International which takes place at the NAEC Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, on 11-13 September.

The brand is proud of its eco-friendly credentials with its dog treats being sustainably sourced from trusted fish merchants in the UK, its toys being hand made and its packaging plastic free.

“We have found that over the past couple of years, our stockists have begun to vary and spread across a broader variety of retail environments,” said the company’s Liam Goodwin.

“From starting out supplying mostly pet shops, dog boutiques and groomers, we have found that more business types would like to stock our products. We have ventured into the world of garden centres, vets and tourist attractions, and have started to gain interest from retailers based in the equestrian world.

“We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to our product lines in our existing horse-themed stockists, and feel that now is the time to jump into the world of horses fully. This is exactly why we have decided to exhibit at BETA International.”

Having exhibited at BETA International in the past, GWF Nutrition is thrilled to be returning to the show this year.

Marketing manager Helen Hounsell said: “As a world-renowned show it was an absolute must for us this year to help us raise the visibility of our equine feed and supplements range across the industry.

“We will be showcasing our high spec retail lines with some great deals to be had, as well as promoting our white labelling capabilities for those businesses who may be looking for an experienced manufacturer to produce on their behalf.”

A 10-year-old schoolboy, who started his own business making neckerchiefs and bow ties for dogs, has secured a deal to sell his products in a leading pet supplies store.

Budding entrepreneur Rory Fricker has reached an agreement with Rosebourne Weyhill in Hampshire for the garden centre complex to his stock bow ties and bandanas, plus a range of shampoo, cologne and travel sets.

Rory and his Fox Red Labrador Hattie Bean were invited to the grand opening of Rosebourne Weyhill’s new undercover extension last Friday (August 5) where he was able to see the range of products on the shelves of the pet department.

As a student of Brockhurst & Marlston House school in Berkshire, Rory learned to sew in an art lesson.

“I wanted to make a few different things outside of the classroom and convinced my mum to buy a sewing machine so I could carry on at home,” he said.

“I had an idea to make my Labrador Hattie Bean a neckerchief and a bow tie, and they turned out rather well, so I made a few more and a few more.

“I then decided to sell these to pay off my sewing machine debt and make some pocket money. I also wanted to raise some money for animal charities.”

He set up Rory & Bean as an online business and is now branching out as Rosebourne becomes the first bricks-and-mortar retailer to stock the products.

Pet treat wholesaler takes 10-year lease on new premises

Pet Treats Wholesale has taken on the 10-year lease of a 8,162 sq ft former Brantano Footwear unit in Burton-on-Trent town centre for its new retail warehouse and e-commerce fulfilment facility.

Douglas Harvey, senior agency surveyor at commercial property agents Rushton Hickman concluded the letting. He said: “This has been a really interesting deal to be involved with, as it’s part of a recent trend of repurposing retail park units to enable occupiers to satisfy their storage needs in a market with a scarcity of warehousing supply as well as the needs of their customers who are increasingly transitioning towards shopping on-line. The size and location of retail warehouses make them ideal for being adapted to provide both click and collect and last mile logistics services for the consumer.”

Bill Stephens from Smith Price RRG said on behalf of the landlord: “it’s been a fantastic result to get a unit of this size let after being vacant for so long. We were impressed with Doug’s creativity in suggesting an occupier that we may not have normally considered for a property of this type and then getting the deal over the line for us”.

Graham Bancroft, director of Rushton Hickman, commented: “The market for retail warehouses has changed over recent years with traditional occupiers not necessarily being the ‘go-to’ for these spaces due to the change in the way people shop.  Consequently, it is important as an agent to think outside the box and not just consider the same old methods and we’re extremely pleased to see the hard work and effort that Doug put into this letting coming to fruition and we all wish Pet Treats Wholesale the best of luck in their new property.”

Cat food brand secures £18m investment

Direct-to-customer cat food brand KatKin has secured $22m (£18m) of investment funding from a group of venture capitalists and angel investors...

Direct-to-customer cat food brand KatKin has secured $22m (£18m) of investment funding from a group of venture capitalists and angel investors.

KatKin is described as being a rebel in a fast-growing market, challenging the pet food industry to do better for cats.

The company has grown significantly in recent years in line with growing demand for its industry-first fresh-cooked cat food. Perwyn and Verlinvest join Octopus Ventures and angels as investors in KatKin.

Led by co-founders and siblings Brett and Nikki O’Farrell, KatKin is the brand that dedicated cat parents can trust to be uncompromising when it comes to their cats’ wellbeing.

Its fresh recipes have been formulated by a Board Certified veterinary nutritionist to meet the biological needs of cats. Each recipe uses 100% human-grade meat, that’s gently steam cooked and then frozen fresh, featuring 0% fillers, grains or preservatives.

KatKin also controls its entire supply chain, from UK sourcing to carbon-neutral shipping, making sure its fresh cat food is free from any risks associated with mass production. The business prides itself on doing things the right way, even if that means taking the hard way.

Brett O’Farrell, co-founder, commented on growth and the use of investment: “KatKin began when Nikki and I questioned what we were feeding our cats Molly, Kiki and Columbus. The more we asked, the more horrified we were at what we found. There’s a huge demand for products that put cat wellbeing first; we know that because KatKin’s customer base has been doubling every six months.

“The new funding will help us go even harder for cats. That means we’re investing in personalised health plans, expanding our world-first fresh cat food manufacturing site and growing our team. Using a data-driven approach, our researchers are working on developing new recipes – including developing nutritional solutions to issues making cats unwell, like diabetes and renal disease.

“We’re grateful to Lopo and Cecile at Verlinvest and Andrew at Perwyn, as well as for the continued support from Octopus and our angel investors. This support doesn’t just invest in our business but in the health and happiness of cats and cat parents.”

Nikki O’Farrell said: “We’re cat parents that love hard. Cat wellbeing happens to be our profession but it’s our passion first. And it shows – we’re the highest-rated cat-food brand on Trustpilot. With this investment, we’ll continue to grow our offering to improve every area of cat wellbeing – with sustainable tofu-based litters, worming tablets, and flea treatments to launch this year.

“It’s about creating awareness and lighting a fire in cat parents everywhere, bringing them together as a community to drive change. We’ll never stop innovating until KatKin’s love-hard attitude becomes the standard for cat care everywhere.”

Andrew Wynn, founder and managing partner of Perwyn, added: “Following our previous investment in the healthy pet food sector, and the invaluable experience that we built up in this market, it has been a delight to get to know Nikki and Brett O’Farrell and to learn about KatKin and the enormous success they have had with their brand. We are very excited to partner with them and to build the next chapter in KatKin’s story. The business is well positioned to drive growth in the rapidly expanding fresh food market for pets, and we look forward to supporting KatKin on the execution of its expansion plans.”

New data reveals soaring cost of owning a pet

New research from a price comparison website shows that the cost of owning a pet has increased dramatically, adding further financial pressure to many UK households...

New research from a price comparison website shows that the cost of owning a pet has increased dramatically, adding further financial pressure to many UK households.

Data from pet insurance comparison site Quotezone.co.uk, based on a sample of 100,000 pet insurance policies, shows that the average cost of purchasing a pet has increased by 31% in 2022, compared to the same period in 2021.

While it’s difficult to suggest what exactly is causing this increase, it’s likely the surge in demand may be responsible, as 3.2 million households bought a new pet during the pandemic.

This increase, coupled with the soaring cost of pet food and veterinary bills - has put pressure on many a pet lovers pocket.

People across the UK are already leaving pets at rescue centres, citing cost of living strains as their main reason – and with household costs set to rise further, it is feared this trend may continue.

Insurance is an incredibly important aspect of pet ownership, pet insurers processed a record 1 million claims in 2021, that’s £2.4 million a day, with the average claim up 4% to £848, most likely due to the rising cost of veterinary treatments.

Quotezone.co.uk has created tips on how to help keep the cost of insurance down:

  • Ensure they are up to date with vaccinations/booster shots (neutering can help too)
  • Think about lifestyle - house pets are less likely to be stolen or run away
  • Consider opting for a lifetime pet insurance policy, because the higher upfront cost could save you more as your pet ages
  • Insure multiple animals under the same multi-pet insurance policy

Greg Wilson, Founder of pet insurance comparison website Quotezone.co.uk comments: “Welcoming a pet to the family has never been more expensive. As people look to rein in the budget, work longer hours and even take up second jobs, many are going to think twice before adopting or buying a furry friend but there are ways to help keep costs down, especially when it comes to insurance.

“It’s important that people do their research beforehand and learn about the type of animal and breed they’d like to adopt, to ensure it’s a good fit for the family, and give themselves an idea of costs for that particular animal.  Some animals can cost up to £30,000 across the course of their lifetime, so it’s crucial owners realise the scale of the commitment.

“Unexpected vet bills have the potential to be quite sizable if the pet suffers an accident or is diagnosed with an illness so a pet insurance policy is sensible, to ensure they are well looked after and the owners finances are protected. Especially as we enter the hot summer months where increased temperatures can cause issues for many animals.”

The RSPCA has revealed, across the country, the charity received 3,644 calls in 2021 asking for help with vet bills.  It said this was a growth of 12% on the year before when 3,241 calls were received.
