Aquarium athletics at National SEA LIFE Centre

The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham has thrown its very own sports day, as the competitive spirit flooded through a city hosting the Commonwealth Games.

The centre hosted a day full of aquatic athletics for its sea creatures, with different games held throughout the day for the animals.

Otter-ly adorable sea otter duo, Ola and Ozzy, have been enjoying all the gaming action with the animal care team, as they took on some gymnastics – minus the leotards! The paw-some pair were supplied with hula-hoops by the animal care team, and the duo have been having a whole l-otter fun with the new sport!

And the pair aren’t shy of sports, as last year they built up a psychic reputation, as they correctly predicted the results of the England team’s football matches during the delayed men’s EURO 2020 competition.

Elsewhere, the cheeky and curious Pablo and his fellow Gentoo penguin pals, will be joining in on the Birmingham project called ‘The Big Whistle’, taking place today.

The Big Whistle is a project honouring Birmingham’s history of whistle making and inspired by the ‘All the Bells’ idea which was carried out at the London 2012 Olympics. The Big Whistle encourages everyone in Birmingham, including the flippered friends, to join in with a joint whistle at 2:22pm on July 28th.

As the penguins can’t whistle, they’ll be joining in on the activity by ‘honking’ instead, so they can still join in with the local fun at the centre.

On top of this, the penguins have been making a splash in the diving world, as they attempted to showcase their inner Tom Daley and take the plunge into the icy water.

Amy Langham, General Manager at National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, said: “The games are such a great experience and we’re so happy that they are hosted here in Birmingham. The event is huge for our city, so we wanted to ensure our animals weren’t missing out on the action too!

“Both our adorable sea otters Ola and Ozzy, and our Gentoo penguins are getting to enjoy their very own SEA LIFE aquarium athletics as we want to not only ensure they are receiving their important enrichment, but they also have some much-deserved fun too. We can’t wait to welcome visitors from all over the world to our attraction during this amazing sporting event, who knows they might even get to see some expert diving skills, worthy of a gold medal, from our various resident sea creatures?”
