Increasing number of families want to keep chickens
A new survey by B&Q reveals that following this year’s horsemeat scandal, almost a quarter of Brits are considering rearing their own chickens to ensure food authenticity.
Rachel Ranwell, Category Director for Seasonal at B&Q, said: “Raising chickens seems to be a growing trend. It's good for people to know about their food sources and kids love it.
"If you don't live in the country, you should check with your council about regulations regarding poultry keeping. You also need to be considerate of neighbours – roosters really do start crowing at dawn.”
The survey of 2,000 adults revealed that the Midlands has the highest number of people who would like to rear their own chickens (63%), closely followed by 42% of people in Wales
B&Q is looking to introduce a special one-off class in its 'You Can Do It' workshops, teaching prospective chicken keepers ‘How to build your own chicken coop’.
