Online pet retailer boosts next-day delivery offering

Online retailer Direct4Pet is celebrating the accelerating growth of its business following major investment in a 40,000 sq ft logistics centre in Lancashire. The move marked the latest stage in its transformation from a small surgery-based operation into one of the country’s fastest growing pet care businesses.
Direct4Pet – whose motto is to make pet healthcare more accessible and affordable – evolved from within an established veterinary practice where the growing need for online, accessible, affordable, and professionally overseen pet care products was soon recognised. As demand quickly increased, it became clear that the business needed its own dedicated structure. In 2013, Black Cat Medicines Limited was established, laying the foundations for what would become a leading name in the pet market.
In 2020, Direct4Pet.co.uk was launched, providing a new digital home designed to reflect a broader vision: a modern, easy-to-use platform offering pet owners nationwide, a trusted source for everything that their animals would need.
Garry Howard, Director of Direct4Pet, said: “Although Black Cat Medicines Limited remains our registered company name, Direct4Pet has become our flagship brand – the face of our commitment to quality, convenience, and customer care. What began as a veterinary-led online pharmacy has evolved into a multi-channel retail operation, serving customers not only through our own website but across numerous major marketplaces.”
As a UK-based, RCVS-registered veterinary pharmacy and pet-care retailer, Direct4Pet provides a full range of products – prescription medicines, food, supplements, accessories and everyday essentials – all overseen by qualified veterinary professionals.
“We live and work surrounded by animals – from family dogs and cats to horses, small furries, and rescue pets – giving us daily reminders of why we do what we do. This hands-on experience shapes everything from the products we stock to the advice we share with our customers. We understand pets and their owners on a personal level,” added Garry.
As the business has grown, so too has the infrastructure. In January 2025 Direct4Pet moved into a new 40,000 sq. ft logistics warehouse, a major investment that reinforces the businesses commitment to efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction. The facility features state-of-the-art conveyor picking and belt packing lines, enabling the team to process and dispatch thousands of orders each day with precision and speed.
“Every product is handled in-house by trained staff under veterinary supervision, ensuring that the quality standards we uphold in clinical settings carry through to every order that leaves the warehouse,” said Garry.
In addition to their own website, Black Cat Medicines also retail through a network of trusted marketplaces, including Amazon, eBay, Tesco, OnBuy, and B&Q. This approach allows customers to buy from their platform of choice, making pet care more convenient and accessible than ever.
“Beyond retail, our advanced fulfilment capabilities enable us to support partner brands and manufacturers through a bespoke integration developed in collaboration with Storefeeder, our Warehouse Management System (WMS) provider.
“This provides a full 3PL (Third-Party Logistics) solution, allowing our partners to connect their e-commerce websites directly to our warehouse systems. Because we already stock their ranges, we can efficiently pick, pack, and dispatch their website orders as if they were our own – saving time, reducing costs, and ensuring a consistent customer experience.
“This combination of veterinary expertise, multi-channel retailing, and integrated logistics has positioned us as both a trusted retailer and a reliable logistics partner within the UK pet-care industry.”
As well as pet owners, Direct4Pet also serves breeders, shelters, pet insurance companies and animal charities, who value their reliability, product authenticity, and veterinary support. Every product Direct4Pet sells is authentic, product tested, high-quality, and sourced from trusted UK suppliers.
Alongside qualified veterinary surgeons and registered SQPs Direct4Pet employs Product Managers, Buyers, Merchandisers, and Customer Service specialists who work closely together.
Their Customer Service team plays a key role in listening to the voice of the customer, gathering feedback, and identifying trends or unmet needs. This insight directly informs decisions about which products to stock, new innovations to introduce, and improvements to existing lines.
They also collaborate with industry experts, manufacturers, and animal nutritionists to ensure that every product that Direct4Pet offers meets the highest standards for pet health, safety, and wellbeing. This combination of professional expertise and direct customer insight ensures their range is both trusted and tailored to what pet owners really want.
Since the website rebrand to Direct4Pet in 2020, has served hundreds of thousands of UK customers. The customer base continues to grow rapidly as more pet owners discover the convenience, trust, and breadth of products offered by this veterinary-led online pet store.
Garry concluded: “We aim to expand our range, introduce new exclusive brands, pushing later cut off times for next day delivery and explore international shipping in the future. We’re also investing in technology – improving our website experience, adding educational pet-health resources, and developing tools to help customers manage orders and deliveries more easily. We may even do a bit of TikToking, sharing tips, guides, and fun content to connect with pet owners in new ways!
“Our long-term goal remains to become the UK’s most trusted online veterinary pharmacy and pet store, combining professional care, affordability, and convenience in one place.”

Pet Remedy launches UK charity partners map
Pet owners are being bombarded with conflicting and often harmful dog advice online, and now one of the UK’s best known pet wellbeing brands has launched a nationwide initiative to help cut through the confusion...

Pet owners are being bombarded with conflicting and often harmful dog advice online, and now one of the UK’s best known pet wellbeing brands has launched a nationwide initiative to help cut through the confusion.
Pet Remedy has created a new UK Charity Partners Map to highlight ethical, welfare driven dog rescues that uphold high standards at a time when irresponsible breeding, abandoned litters and misleading dog behaviour content are becoming worryingly common.
The interactive map on the Pet Remedy website features trusted organisations including Dachshund Rescue UK, Labrador Lifeline Trust and Greyhound Trust Mersey and Cheshire, with more being added as rescues sign up to the company’s ethical framework.
Pet Remedy says the aim is to give overwhelmed owners and adopters a safe starting point when choosing a rescue, at a time when social media is filled with conflicting training methods, fear based trends and influencers promising “quick fixes.”
The urgency of the initiative has been underscored by a heartbreaking incident reported by the RSPCA. Seven ten week old terrier cross puppies were found abandoned outside the gates of the RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham District Branch during severe storm conditions at the weekend.
A shocked staff member arrived for work at 8am and discovered the terrified puppies crammed inside a metal cage with no food or water. Daniel Cartwright, the branch manager, said: “They are doing really well and all appear healthy. It is heartbreaking to think that someone has just discarded them like this.
The puppies were in a crate at the side of a main road, not even close to our building. They were left in conditions that put them in harm’s way, especially with the cold and rainy weather we were having at the weekend.” Pet Remedy says incidents like this highlight exactly why owners need consistent, trusted, welfare led guidance when choosing where to adopt.
Every charity listed on the map adheres to the Pet Remedy Pledge, a commitment to avoid any training tools or methods that deliberately cause fear, pain or psychological distress, and to only use approaches that protect a dog’s physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
The pledge, which has also been adopted by trainers and behaviourists in the company’s professional network, forms the backbone of the map’s vetting process and ensures that each rescue operates with a welfare first ethos.
Andrew Hale, C.A.B, C.C.B, Behaviour Consultant for Pet Remedy, said: “There is such a minefield of conflicting dog information out there that many owners simply do not know who or what to trust.
"Our rescue map exists because we wanted to build a network people can rely on, where every organisation listed puts the animal’s wellbeing first. Ethical rescues are doing extraordinary work under increasing pressure, and it has never been more important to help the public find the right support.”
Pet Remedy, whose clinically proven calming range is widely used and approved by vets, says the map is just part of its wider mission to make dog welfare accessible and evidence-based.
Their products work via natural calming mechanisms by supporting GABA pathways, which help reduce stress in mammals, and the brand has long been vocal about the need for ethical, science backed approaches in UK pet care.
With abandonment cases rising, behaviour problems increasing and owners more confused than ever, Pet Remedy hopes its new map will become a trusted resource for anyone looking to adopt a dog responsibly.

Following the success of its award-winning Roolo enrichment toy, Play9 is back to shake things up once again with the launch of Tuki’s Treats, a new range of 100% raw, all-natural dog treats designed to perfectly complement its flagship treat-dispensing product.
As more dog owners make the switch to raw feeding for its proven health benefits, Tuki’s Treats answer the growing demand for honest, naturally prepared nutrition. Each treat is made from 100% raw, locally sourced ingredients and contains no additives, fillers, or preservatives - just pure, expert-approved goodness.
Play9’s founder, Lee Bridges, explained the inspiration behind the launch: “Since releasing the Roolo, one of the questions we’ve been asked most is: ‘What treats should I use with it?’
“The Roolo works beautifully with all sorts of treats, but we wanted to create something truly special. So we developed Tuki’s Treats: high-value, single-ingredient, raw meat snacks that reflect everything we stand for – enrichment, wellbeing, and quality.”
Named after Play9’s Chief Canine Enrichment Officer, Tuki, a spirited Rottweiler who inspired the brand, the range launches with four delicious and functional options:
- Ox Heart Training Treats –100% raw British beef heart, apple cider vinegar, and nothing else. Small, mighty, and Roolo-ready.
- Ox Heart Skinny Sticks – 100% raw British beef heart, apple cider vinegar, and nothing else. Serve whole or cut to size for Roolo® playtime.
- Ox Liver Jerky – 100% raw British beef and nothing else. Packed with protein and iron for strength and vitality.
- Venison Chew Sticks – 100% raw British venison and nothing else. Naturally lean and perfect for longer-lasting chewing satisfaction.
Building on the brand’s cheeky and creative legacy - which saw Play9 win ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ at the 2024 Pet Industry Federation Awards - this latest innovation marks their evolution from enrichment pioneers to trendsetters in the raw revolution.
“We started Play9 to help improve dogs’ mental and physical wellbeing through enrichment,” added Bridges. “Now, with Tuki’s Treats, we’re completing that circle - pairing the best play with the best fuel. It’s the perfect match.”
Play9: From Enrichment to Nutrition This expansion represents Play9’s growing influence in the pet care industry as a brand synonymous with innovation, authenticity, and quality. The launch of Tuki’s Treats demonstrates the company’s mission to create products that don’t just entertain - but truly nourish dogs, inside and out.
About Play9 Founded in 2023, Play9 has quickly become one of the UK’s most exciting pet brands. Known for its award-winning Roolo treat dispenser and bold, witty marketing, Play9 champions the wellbeing of dogs through thoughtful design and high-quality ingredients. With the launch of Tuki’s Treats, Play9 continues its mission to redefine modern pet care - one wag at a time.

Top canine experts unite for groundbreaking event

Some of the biggest names in the dog world will gather in Gloucestershire next summer for a new event that promises to transform the way trainers, behaviourists and veterinary professionals learn and connect...

Some of the biggest names in the dog world will gather in Gloucestershire next summer for a new event that promises to transform the way trainers, behaviourists and veterinary professionals learn and connect.
The Inside Out Symposium, hosted by leading education provider Canine Principles, will take place at Hartpury University on Saturday, June 13 2026, from 9am until 5pm. Only 100 places are available for what organisers describe as a calm, thoughtful and deeply supportive day of science-led teaching and meaningful discussion.
Billed as “the event the dog world has been waiting for”, Inside Out aims to tackle a growing problem within the sector, where many professionals report feeling burnt out, overwhelmed or stuck in surface-level learning cycles.
Organisers say fast-paced conferences that prioritise packed schedules over genuine learning have left many searching for something different, a space that supports both the dog and the human nervous system.
Inside Out promises the opposite, offering smaller breakout sessions, flexible learning spaces, quiet areas and acres of green outdoor space to reflect and regulate between talks. The programme has been carefully curated to be accessible and neurodivergent-friendly, with an emphasis on depth, collaboration and compassion.
Jo Middleton, Director of Canine Principles and curator of the event, said bringing so many experts together under one roof presents an unprecedented moment of connection for the sector. “This is a golden opportunity to gather brilliant minds from across the dog world and give them the space, support and quality of education they deserve, because when we slow down, learn together and honour both the dog and the person supporting them, everything changes. Inside Out is about depth, connection and creating an environment where professionals can breathe, think and truly grow.”
The day’s programme brings together some of the most respected voices in canine education, psychology, health and welfare, with sessions covering everything from neuroplasticity and emotional resilience to arthritis, responsible breeding and practitioner wellbeing.
Jo Middleton will explore canine neuroplasticity and the science of learning, while veterinary expert Dr Nick Thompson will examine the often overlooked issue of hypothyroidism in dogs. The Naturewatch Foundation will present exclusive new findings on the state of UK dog breeding, and longevity specialist Penny Wood will discuss how owners and professionals can help dogs live longer, healthier lives.
Delegates can also hear from Tom Candy on managing work related stress, Debby Lucken on supporting neurodivergent children and their dogs, Vicky Skinner on the legal essentials every canine professional should know, and leading vet Hannah Capon on the latest understanding of canine arthritis.
Researcher Carri Westgarth will share owner-led insights into ageing dogs, while Dr Tara Quinn will focus on emotional health for those working closely with animals. Additional sessions include a virtual talk from Tasha Ashwood on inclusivity within the dog world and guidance from Samantha Wayland on supporting dogs transitioning from shelters into homes.
The day will conclude with a panel from the Canine Principles tutor team, reflecting on how deepening our understanding of dogs can transform practice.Lunch is included, all dietary needs are catered for and ample free parking is available on-site. Delegates can book individual sessions on a first come, first served basis once tickets are purchased.
Inside Out is also a charity fundraiser, with all profits donated to ALaw, The UK Centre for Animal Law, and Naturewatch Foundation, which campaigns to raise standards in dog welfare across the UK and internationally.
Early Bird tickets cost £95 until 31 December, rising to £115 afterwards, with organisers warning that the limited spaces are likely to sell out quickly.
Backed by sponsors including Animal Focused Alliance and The Pet Business Wellbeing Mentor, the symposium promises a refreshing alternative to conventional CPD. For many in the sector, it offers something increasingly rare, time to think, to breathe and to reconnect with why they chose to work with dogs.

WildWash has announced the launch of its new annual charity partnership, this time supporting Nowzad through sales of their WildWash 2-in-1 Charity Dog Shampoo & Conditioner. The initiative follows the success of last year’s collaboration with All Dogs Matter, which received a highly positive response from customers, groomers, and the wider pet-loving community.
The WildWash annual charity programme was created to support meaningful causes within the animal welfare sector. After a successful first year with All Dogs Matter — an organisation dedicated to rescuing and rehoming abandoned dogs across the UK — WildWash is expanding its impact to help more dogs in need, both locally and internationally.

For 2025–2026, WildWash is supporting Nowzad, a charity founded by former Royal Marine Pen Farthing. Nowzad rescues and reunites animals affected by war and conflict, providing urgent care, shelter, veterinary support, and safe relocation for dogs, cats, and other animals in regions such as Afghanistan and Ukraine. The organisation’s mission aligns with WildWash’s values of kindness, bravery, and dedication.

Jane Cooper, founder of WildWash, commented: “Our community showed incredible support during our partnership with All Dogs Matter, and we are excited to continue this mission with Nowzad. We believe that every wash should make a difference — not only for our customers’ pets but for dogs who need help the most.”
With every bottle of the Charity Dog Shampoo sold, £1 will be donated directly to Nowzad to fund rescue operations, medical treatment, and long-term care. WildWash has set a target to raise £5,000 by November 2026 to support the charity’s life-changing work.
You can also make a real difference with every wash. By choosing the WildWash Charity Dog Shampoo, you’re not just pampering your pet — you’re helping animals in conflict and war zones: in Ukraine and Afghanistan. Every bottle sold donates £1 directly to Nowzad’s rescue work. Join them in supporting this incredible cause and find out more, or make your purchase, on their dedicated initiative page: https://wildwash.co.uk/charity-dog-shampoo/.

WildWash is a family-run brand committed to ethical, natural, and sustainable pet care. The company uses only high-quality natural ingredients, sources recycled packaging materials, and carries the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny logo. The annual charity initiative extends this mission, ensuring WildWash products have a positive impact far beyond the bath.
This year marks the beginning of a long-term commitment by WildWash to support charities both in the UK and globally, with the aim of helping more dogs each year and making a meaningful difference in the lives of animals in need.

Pet insurer Petplan has highlighted the significant role pets play in holiday celebrations with a new survey. From festive feasts to family photos, Britain’s cats and dogs are set to enjoy a very merry Christmas this year, showcasing just how much the nation includes pets in their holiday festivities.
The survey of 2,000 pet owners found that one in two (50%) will be buying presents for their pets this year, with dog owners proving slightly more generous than cat lovers – 52% versus 45%.
And while Father Christmas might be busy filling stockings for the kids, pet parents are doing the same for their four-legged family members. On average, UK pet owners will spend £37 on gifts for their animals this Christmas – with dogs again coming out on top. Dog owners spend an average of £42, compared to £28 for cats.
From receiving gifts to joining the family photo, it’s clear that pets are considered part of the festivities:
- 50% receive their own gifts or stockings
- 49% make an appearance in family photos
- 42% are treated to special Christmas meals
- 37% have their names included in Christmas cards
Dog owners are particularly enthusiastic about involving their pets. Over half (55%) include them in family photos, compared to just 36% of cat owners, and nearly half (46%) take their dogs on special Christmas walks or outings.
So, what’s on the wish list for our four-legged friends this Christmas?
The most popular pet gifts are treats and speciality food (64%), followed by toys (60%) and beds or blankets (28%). Personalised presents such as engraved bowls or name tags (20%) and grooming products (18%) are also high on the list.
Gifting habits also change with age. 67% of owners buy toys for younger animals, compared to 35%for older pets, while cosy beds and blankets are much more common for senior companions.
Younger owners are the biggest spenders, with Gen Z (£44) and Millennials (£46) leading the way.
For many owners, the festive season also brings challenges – from travel plans to busy households. When owners head away for Christmas:
- 39% rely on family for pet care
- 22% ask friends
- 21% take their pets with them when staying with relatives
- 14% say they wouldn’t travel if it meant leaving their pet behind
And while Christmas is full of sparkle, decorations and tempting food, owners are keeping one eye on safety.
- 53% are aware of the dangers of toxic foods such as chocolate, grapes and onions
- 45% worry about decorations or small items being swallowed
- 41% are mindful of the stress and anxiety that noise or visitors can cause
Owners of younger pets are the most worried about festive hazards – typically because younger cats and dogs are more curious, more energetic and more likely to nibble or chew. In December 2024, Petplan received claims of over £327,000 for chocolate, raison or grape poisoning incidents.
Petplan Vet, Brian Faulkner says: “Christmas is such a special time for families, and that includes the four-legged members too. A few small precautions can make all the difference - keeping treats out of reach, providing a quiet space if the house gets busy, and watching out for decorations that pets may chew or swallow. With a little planning, pets can enjoy a relaxed and happy Christmas right alongside us.”

Pet smuggling crackdown with new law
Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill receives Royal Assent

Animals will be protected from cruel smugglers under new laws cracking down on the vile low-welfare pet trade...

Animals will be protected from cruel smugglers under new laws cracking down on the vile low-welfare pet trade.
Deceitful pet traders will no longer be able to cram vehicles with dozens of pets for sale. The new law will cut the limit to just five pets per vehicle and ensure that pets travelling separately from their owner do so within five days of their owner’s travel.
The Government will also be able to protect vulnerable animals from suffering through lengthy journeys in poor conditions by banning the import of dogs and cats under six months old, those that have been mutilated (such as those that have cropped ears or have been declawed), and those that are heavily pregnant. These measures will be subject to appropriate exemptions.
Animal Welfare Minister Baroness Hayman said: “This Government pledged in its manifesto to end puppy smuggling, and this Act does exactly that.
“We’re strengthening the rules on pet travel to help ensure that animals imported into the country for sale are healthy, treated with care, and transported humanely.
“This legislation is an important step forward in protecting both pets and prospective pet owners from unnecessary suffering at the hands of heartless traders.”
By making the trade less profitable and easier to detect, we’ll disrupt those who profit from animal suffering and responsible breeders who prioritise welfare will be able to compete on a level playing field.
Pet owners will have greater confidence that pets available for purchase have not been sourced through illegal or low-welfare routes. This reduces the risk of families facing the emotional and financial burden of caring for pets that have been exposed to such cruelty.
Liberal Democrat MP Danny Chambers, who introduced the legislation via a Private Members’ Bill said: “As a vet, I’ve treated many dogs with cruelly cropped ears or docked tails, leaving them physically scarred and emotionally traumatised. Knowing this Bill will help us put a stop to this abuse and have a bigger impact on animal welfare than I could possibly have achieved in a lifetime treating individual animals demonstrates how important this legislation will prove to be.
“Thanks to support from Defra, animal welfare organisations and pet lovers across the country, we got the Animal Welfare Bill through the Commons, through the Lords, and today passed into law.”
The Department will now start work to implement these reforms and deliver the relevant secondary legislation.
This comes ahead of the Animal Welfare Strategy due to be published this year.

Pets at Home has found that 3.1 million households will spend more on gifts for their furry friends than any other family member. New research reveals that we’re truly a nation of pet lovers who show this by making pets the centre of Christmas celebrations.
Almost a half of pet owners (43%) plan their festive celebrations around their pets, with 14% even skipping events with family and friends to stay home with their beloved furry friends. The increasing ‘humanisation’ of pets is seeing owners go above and beyond to include pets in every part of the festive celebrations.
So, what exactly does Christmas Day look like for Britain’s pampered pets this year? Over half (54%) will wake up to their very own Christmas present, and rabbits are officially the most spoilt species as 70% will receive a special gift this year. Pets will enjoy a true array of festive treats including:
- A specially cooked festive meal (41%)
- Corgis receive a truly royal treatment, with almost a third (31%) getting a seat at the Christmas dinner table.
- Unwrapping other family members’ presents (20%)
- Opening a fun-filled stocking (17%)
- Having a special Christmas outfit (13%)
Almost a third of pet owners (30%) would happily kick their partner off the sofa if their pet wanted to sit there, while 29% say their furry friend always gets the “best seat in the house” at Christmas. A quarter (25%) even let their pet share their bed during the festive season - a figure that climbs to almost a half (44%) among owners of the nation’s most pampered pooch, the Cavapoo.
Pet grooming is taking priority over personal pampering this Christmas, with one in four owners (24%) admitting they book their pet’s grooming appointment before thinking about their own festive haircut. Another quarter (25%) say they are more likely to buy a new festive outfit for their pet than for themselves.
When it comes to capturing Christmas memories, pets are front and centre. One in four (26%) say their pet features in every family photo, while more than one in five (22%) admit they take more pictures with their pet than with anyone else. For some (10%), their pet quite literally steals the spotlight - appearing as the sole star of the family Christmas card.
Making sure pets are comfortable is just as important as including them as part of the festive fun. Dr. Samantha Butler-Davies, Veterinary Services Director at Pets at Home says: “In so many households Pets are firmly at the heart of festive celebrations. From special gifts to planning Christmas around them, it’s clear how much love, joy, and companionship they bring to families up and down the UK.
As we increasingly integrate pets into our festive traditions, it’s more important than ever to provide a quiet space where they can retreat and relax. Choosing pet-safe decorations, introducing guests gradually, sticking to familiar routines, and keeping an eye on their social cues can all help reduce stress and ensure they stay happy and calm throughout the entire festive season.”

Three in five (61%) pet owners take special steps to pet-proof their home during the Christmas period. The top seven ways owners do this are:
- Hiding edible treats (25%)
- Opting for an artificial tree (24%)
- Avoiding fragile or edible decorations (21%)
- Anchoring the tree securely (19%)
- Not leaving presents under the tree (16%)
- Having artificial candles (12%)
- Only decorating top half of the tree (7%)

Online dog school community explodes in popularity

Dog lovers are now signing up to an unlikely new online craze, a playful virtual ‘dog school’ that has exploded in popularity thanks to its mix of challenges, wholesome chaos and solid expert advice.
Skool Dogs, a free online community hosted on learning platform Skool, is fast becoming a go-to space for owners whose camera rolls are 98% pictures of their pets.
What began as a small, supportive group for confused dog owners is suddenly attracting members across the world with its blend of humour, education and affectionate nonsense.
Inside Skool Dogs, the vibe is closer to a virtual playground than a traditional training forum. There are ‘dog homework’ challenges, quarterly awards for the silliest pet photo, and even a tongue-in-cheek leadership team, including the legendary Head of Snacks, a fictional Skool Dog character who “signs off” community updates with crumbs on his chin.
And while it’s all fun and memes on the surface, the group is quietly helping owners learn vital skills about ageing, behaviour, wellbeing and emotional health, often without realising they’re learning at all.

Behind the fast-growing platform is Angela Day, the respected canine rehabilitation specialist and founder of The Canine Advocate.
Angela, who has spent her career working with everything from UK sporting champions to police dogs, set up the community after becoming increasingly concerned about the tidal wave of confusing, contradictory and sometimes downright dangerous advice circulating online.
“I wanted to create a space where owners feel safe to ask anything, laugh a lot, and learn without being judged,” Angela says. “There’s so much noise out there about dog care and behaviour, and people are terrified of getting it wrong. Skool Dogs cuts through all that with good information wrapped in humour, community and kindness.”
Angela’s expertise underpins Skool Dogs, even if the members don’t always realise they’re getting professional guidance between the memes. Her work focuses heavily on the early signs of issues, something she sees many owners overlook until their pet is noticeably struggling.
She explains that subtle changes are often the first clues: slower recovery after exercise, stiffness getting out of bed, hesitation on stairs or in and out of the car, and a shift towards gentler play. Behaviour can also change, with older dogs becoming clingier, more anxious or more easily startled as discomfort creeps in.
It’s this ethos, practical, evidence-based and grounded in compassion, that now shapes Skool Dogs’ most popular threads. Members can share videos of warm-ups before walks, post photos of their dogs practising helpful balance and stability exercises, or swap tips on making homes safer for wobbly seniors using nonslip mats and supportive bedding.
Still, the beating heart of Skool Dogs is joy, in all its muddy, tear-jerking, biscuit-crumbed glory. Members cheer each other on through setbacks, celebrate tiny wins and share the kind of photos that only dog people truly understand: the wonky smile just after a sneeze, the proud “I found a stick” moment, the post-bath sulk.
For Angela, this mix of sincerity and silliness is exactly the point.
“Learning doesn’t always have to be serious,” she says. “If owners are having fun, if they feel supported and they’re laughing together, they absorb the important stuff almost effortlessly. That’s why Skool Dogs works.”
She believes that empowering owners early, especially as their dogs head into their golden years, can transform quality of life. Core conditioning, once considered an elite technique for sporting dogs, is now being embraced by ordinary families thanks to her guidance.
Strengthening stabilising muscles, she says, helps dogs move more confidently, reduces strain on painful joints and protects against further injury.
And if things don’t feel right, she urges owners to seek professional help sooner rather than later.
For those wanting to join the fast-growing movement, the group is free to access at www.Skool.com/SkoolDogs

Independent retailers are facing business rates increases of up to 45% alongside rising wage costs and a four-year wait for action on unfair competition, a new podcast from Bira has revealed.
The latest episode of 'High Street Matters', titled 'The Autumn Budget - A Reaction from Independent Retailers', examines the gap between government promises of "transformation" and the harsh reality facing shops on the high street.
Hosted by Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, the episode features John Jones, Managing Partner of Philip Morris & Son in Hereford and current President of Bira, who shares his frank assessment of what the Budget means for his 170-year-old family department store.
Mr Jones said: "Initially it sounded all right. I thought there were a few things that supported retail. Unfortunately, the devil is in the detail. What the Chancellor announced and what it turned out to be were two very different things. I thought rates were going to be all right - it's turned out we've got a 45% increase by the time transition relief runs out."
The podcast reveals how the government's promised "transformation" of business rates has failed to materialise, with most independent retailers facing significant increases despite new lower multipliers. Mr Jones explained that despite one of his rents going down, his rateable value shot up, leaving it over 50% above his actual rent.
"It feels like we've been misled," said Mr Jones. "It's being spun as support for small retail, but it's the opposite. Big retailers may pay less, while independents pay more. It makes no sense."
Mr Goodacre added: "Major supermarkets are seeing around a 1.6% increase - meaning they will actually pay £100,000 less next year. Yet independent shops are facing increases of 45%. How is that levelling the playing field?"
The episode also tackles the four-year delay in closing the low-value import duty loophole, which allows overseas sellers to flood the UK market with goods that avoid VAT, duty, and safety standards.
Mr Jones said: "Items come in very cheaply from abroad. They bypass product safety laws, employment law, health and safety - everything we must comply with. America closed their loophole in less than six months. Europe's doing it next year. Why are we waiting until 2029?"
Mr Goodacre expressed concern that the delay may be linked to trade negotiations: "It feels like the China deal is more important than the UK high street."
The podcast also examines the impact of National Living Wage increases, with the rate for 21+ rising by 4.1% and the 18-20 rate jumping 8.5%. Mr Jones warned this could affect youth employment: "If I have to pay an 18-year-old almost the same as someone with ten years' experience, I'm more likely to employ the experienced person. I think this will increase youth unemployment."
When asked if there was anything positive in the Budget for independent retailers, Mr Jones was blunt: "Honestly? No. There is nothing for growth - nothing that drives growth. And without growth, there's no investment, no confidence, and no reason to take risks."
Mr Goodacre added: "The Office for Budget Responsibility says the same: no growth measures. Growth is what gives consumers money to spend on the high street. Without it, discretionary spending falls. Independent retailers will find ways to adapt, but this Budget has made their job significantly harder."
The podcast is available now by searching for 'High Street Matters' online. More resources and support for independent retailers can be found at bira.co.uk.

RVC launches new treatment option for dogs with common heart condition
The Royal Veterinary College’s world-leading Queen Mother Hospital for Animals has launched a new treatment option for dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease, called trans-catheter edge-to-edge repair. The RVC is the first centre worldwide to offer TEER, open-heart surgery and medical treatment for the disease in dogs...

The Royal Veterinary College’s world-leading Queen Mother Hospital for Animals has launched a new treatment option for dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease, called trans-catheter edge-to-edge repair. The RVC is the first centre worldwide to offer TEER, open-heart surgery and medical treatment for the disease in dogs.
DMVD is the most common heart disease in dogs. The condition sees the mitral valve thicken and become leaky, causing blood to flow backwards into the heart's left atrium. This condition, most frequent in smaller, older dogs, leads to the heart chambers enlarging and eventually can cause heart failure. However, while incurable, it can be managed with medication and treatment to extend life.
TEER is a relatively new procedure aimed at helping manage the disease. It has only been available since 2020 in Asia and 2021 in the USA. Now that more dogs have undergone TEER, the industry has more information on how well it works and its risks. About 95% of dogs have been found to recover well after the procedure and have less valve leakage, meaning many dogs reduce or stop their heart medications afterwards. In total, for dogs who already had heart failure, 80% were still alive two years after undergoing TEER.
Therefore, the Cardiology Service at the QMHA has been working in collaboration with Bristol Veterinary Specialists to launch this new treatment option in the UK. The procedure is undertaken using specialist equipment, including echo machines at the hospital. It is a minimally invasive surgery that allows surgeons to repair the mitral valve on a beating heart. Dogs are up and walking the day after and are usually discharged within two days.
TEER is now offered at the RVC’s QMHA alongside open-heart surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass, which is still considered the most effective therapy for dogs with advanced DMVD. A joint evaluation by the cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services will be conducted to ensure all treatment options are carefully considered for each individual patient.
TEER may be recommended for patients unsuitable for open-heart surgery, those seeking a less invasive approach, or when financial limitations preclude surgical intervention. Dogs may be a suitable candidate for TEER if they have severe mitral regurgitation caused by DVMD, heart enlargement or a history of congestive heart failure.
Dr Joshua Hannabuss, Lecturer in Veterinary Cardiology and Co-Head of Cardiology at the RVC’s QMHA, said: "It's truly exciting to offer an additional treatment option for dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease. I believe we’re entering a new era where minimally invasive therapies will become more accessible for managing this condition. With a clearer understanding of the safety, benefits and potential risks of TEER, we feel that now is the right time to introduce this therapy to the UK, and we remain committed to improving the quality and longevity of life for dogs affected by this disease."

A company claiming to be the ‘world’s first pet brand’ established in London in 1860 has been re-invented into an award-winning modern-day success.
Spratt’s Patent Limited has been recognised with two major UK honours during its re-launch year – a prestigious Gold International Green Apple Environment Award and a finalist in the New Pet Product of the Year category at the PIF Awards.
The double recognition marks a significant milestone for the brand’s modern revival, led by founder and chairman Tariq Ali, positioning Spratt’s as one of the most promising and innovative pet companies in the UK market.
Selected from over 700 global entries, Spratt’s Patent Limited has been awarded a Gold International Green Apple Award for outstanding environmental achievements for its product Spratt’s Chews.
The organisers confirmed Spratt’s as an award recipient in the 2025 programme, placing the heritage brand alongside leading sustainability-focused companies across the UK. The awards ceremony took place at the House of Lords in London on 17 November 2025, adding significant prestige to the recognition.
Earlier this month, Spratt’s was shortlisted as a finalist in the New Pet Product of the Yea’ category at the Pet Industry Federation Awards, recognising Spratt’s Chews as a standout new product in the UK pet sector.
Originally founded in London in 1860 and widely credited as the world’s first commercial pet food company, Spratt’s pioneered the global pet industry.
Today, the brand is being revived with a multi-vertical ecosystem spanning nutritional chews, AI-driven pet health technology, DNA testing, educational platforms and an exclusive society membership programme.
Tariq Ali commented: “To receive national recognition from both the Green Apple Awards and the PIF Awards during our revival year is an honour. These accolades reflect our mission to restore Spratt’s as not only a heritage British brand, but a global leader in innovation, sustainability, and pet wellness. This is just the beginning.”
Spratt’s will officially launch its first consumer products in the coming months, with its core technology, and pet wellness verticals scheduled to roll out in phases through 2025–2026. Spratt’s will also introduce an exclusive ‘Spratt’s Society’ membership programme in December, supporting the brand’s growing community and heritage revival.
Spratt’s Patent Limited has undertaken a complete revival of the historic SPRATT’S brand, including extensive trademark filings, preserving its original heritage, and redeveloping its product range for the modern era. The company’s long-term vision is to re-establish Spratt’s as the world’s most innovative and future-focused pet brand –reflecting both its historic origins and its next-generation development strategy.

The interim boss of Pets at Home has revealed that “urgent and necessary action is needed to return the retail side of the business to growth”.
The group’s retail business saw underlying profits plummet by 84.1% to £3.5 million in the six months to 9 October.
Ian Burke, interim executive chairman following Lyssa McGowan's abrupt September exit, announced a “retail turnaround plan with four clear priorities of Product, Price, Execution and Cost.”
He said: “Stepping into the role as Interim CEO 10 weeks ago, I set out with a clear agenda – to establish a firm grip on the issues facing our retail business, whilst maintaining the positive results we're seeing in areas such as Vets.
“For over 30 years, Pets at Home has been a business with a clear purpose, an established market and loyal customer base, but it's clear that urgent and necessary action is needed to return the Retail business to growth to meet both our own expectations and those of our investors.
“I've spent time visiting over 100 Pet Care Centres and engaging with colleagues at all levels of the business to establish where the challenges are isolated, resulting in the implementation of a retail turnaround plan with four clear priorities of Product, Price, Execution and Cost. We are returning to our retailing roots to stabilise and rebuild momentum in our Retail business, and to lay the foundations for a new CEO in due course.
“At the heart of our business remains 17,000 trusted and passionate colleagues and vet partners, and it's through them that we will deliver future growth. I am grateful to them all for their unwavering dedication and energy and together we'll ensure the business can thrive again.”

Arden Grange has unveiled the biggest brand and packaging update in its 30-year history. With the roll-out beginning at the end of the year, the new designs combine a modern, impactful look with familiar heritage elements and reinforce the brand’s promise of 'nutrition without compromise'.
A look rooted in trust, designed for today The packaging refresh mirrors the brand’s journey, maintaining a legacy of trust with progress. The revitalised Masterbrand keeps Arden Grange’s iconic green and familiar logo structure, ensuring instant recognition of the brand mark for loyal customers.
Clear range design and bold new visuals help pet owners and stockists quickly identify the right product with strong emphasis on the brand’s use of natural ingredients with science-backed benefits. New bespoke pet photography and visual health cues make a stronger impact and connection with customers at point of purchase.
Three tiers of healthy nutrition For the first time, Arden Grange introduces a 3-tier portfolio:
- Daily Nutrition - optimal, natural nutrition to sustain your pet’s overall vitality and wellbeing, every day.
- Advanced Nutrition - gentle natural recipes to support dogs with specific needs at every stage of life, including the brand’s best-selling Sensitive products.
- VetCare - grain free, vet-approved, PARNUT compliant formulas offer tailored support for dogs with diagnosed health conditions, without compromising on the quality, natural nutrition they enjoy.
Each tier uses distinct colour palettes, icons and background patterns for easy range navigation and faster decision-making.
Benefits for pet owners and retailers The tiered structure and stronger on-pack communication were developed following extensive consumer research. These changes deliver clearer shopper guidance in-store, and a stronger story to share with customers – supporting repeat purchase and brand loyalty.
While the design is modernised, Arden Grange has preserved its well-known legacy colours on core products, ensuring familiarity for existing customers. Updates such as better alignment between puppy and adult life-stage diets further simplify the owner journey.
The refresh builds on the successful launch of the VetCare range earlier this year and represents another important milestone in the Arden Grange story.
“The fantastic response to our VetCare launch has confirmed just how much pet owners value our commitment to natural ingredients, product quality, transparency, and trust. This brand refresh marks the next exciting chapter for Arden Grange – giving our products a modern, stand-out look while staying true to our longstanding mission of delivering nutrition without compromise,” said Robert Craig, Managing Director.
The new packaging will begin appearing in stores and online at the end of the year, followed by a consumer facing campaign designed to raise awareness of the Masterbrand evolution.
With further innovations on the horizon, Arden Grange is set to remain a must stock brand for retailers in 2025 and well into the future.

The Kennel Club, which has been rebranded as The Royal Kennel Club, is breaking with tradition to expand its focus from pedigree dogs to all dogs in the UK.
Central to this evolution is the launch of the UK’s largest-ever Dog Census, the reinvention of Crufts as a year-round community for dog lovers and owners, and the extension of the RKC’s renowned health programmes to benefit every dog.
To mark the occasion of become the Royal Kennel Club, the organisation commissioned a special ’21-dog salute’ outside Windsor Castle, featuring a host of the UK’s most loved, celebrated and vulnerable dog breeds including a few familiar faces.
A census for every dog in Britain
The RKC is inviting every dog owner in Britain, regardless of breed, to take part in the UK’s largest-ever Dog Census, a landmark project that will shape the future of dog health, ownership, and wellbeing. The project will build on insights from the more than three million pedigree dogs already served by the organisation.
As the first major initiative of the RKC’s new chapter, the Census will collect invaluable data on dogs’ health, behaviour, lifestyle, and wellbeing, guiding scientific research, supporting new initiatives, and informing the development of services through the RKC and its year-round Crufts community.
Crufts: A year-round community for all dogs and their owners
For the first time, Crufts, the world’s most famous dog show organised annually by the RKC, will evolve into a digital community accessible to all dogs and their owners. While the show remains a highlight, the new platform will operate year-round, meeting the needs of all dog owners through a range of new products services, all designed to support dogs and their owners every day of the year.
The platform will launch in February 2026, with pre-registration opening today, 25 November. For more information and to join the waiting list please visit: www.crufts.com/cruftsclub
Expanding decades of canine health expertise
Over its long history, the RKC has invested millions into research, education, and health programmes for pedigree dogs. The Health Test Results Finder, accessed by over 4 million people annually, helps owners and breeders make informed decisions, while the organisation’s comprehensive evidence base draws on over 4,000 research papers across 222 breeds. These resources, including more than 1.5 million screening results covering hip, elbow, eye, heart, spinal, and respiratory conditions, and over 100 DNA tests, will now benefit all dogs in the UK.
Further to this, building on the Health Standard for pedigree dogs introduced this year, the RKC will also extend this guidance to non-pedigree dogs in 2026, helping breeders make evidence-based decisions ahead of breeding that protect canine health and wellbeing.
21-Dog Salute
The 21-Dog Salute image features many of the UK’s much love breeds, including a Jack Russell Terrier, Crufts legends, and even the current Dulux dog, all coming together to celebrate the Club’s new chapter. The dogs were all sourced from the Kennel Club community with all participants volunteering their time, some travelling a long distance, to take part in the very special (and a little chaotic) photoshoot.
Jannine Edgar, CEO of The Royal Kennel Club, said: “This is a landmark moment for dogs in the UK. Becoming The Royal Kennel Club is not just an honour, it’s a responsibility to uphold standards not just of dogs but for dogs. We are opening our doors wider than ever before, inviting every dog owner to be part of a movement that puts canine health, happiness, and inclusion at its heart. The Dog Census, the evolution of Crufts, and our expanded health programmes are just the beginning. Every dog matters, and together, we can shape a better future for them all.”
“The granting of the Royal prefix, and the 21-dog salute tribute, reflects the deep and enduring bond between dogs and people, including generations of Royalty; a relationship The Kennel Club has proudly championed for 150 years and is excited to continue for generations of dogs to come.”
