Jollyes is set to open a new store in Poole – its first in Dorset – right opposite a Pets at Home outlet. The new Poole store, at Unit 1C, Wessex Gate East Retail Park, will open at 10am on Saturday, August 20.

Jollyes in Poole will be just a few paw-steps away from the well-known pet store chain, meaning customers will be able to compare the service and value they each offer side-by-side.

The new store will employ 10 staff, including newly appointed store manager Andy Matthews (pictured above), whose career includes spells at the Co-op, Marks & Spencer and Tesco. With three children in his family, he has hands-on experience with pets including Angel, a German shepherd, and Tom, a 10-year-old cat.

The 5,000 square feet store will sell a wide range of pet food and accessories for dogs, cats, small animals, birds, fish and reptiles.

In the weeks immediately after opening, the store will also host a Community Pet Clinic, offering regular health checks, vaccinations, flea and worming and microchipping.

The location is a convenient stopping off point for owners across the area, including those using popular dog walks such as the local beaches, Upton Country Park and Canford Heath. Like all Jollyes, owners are welcome to bring their pets into the store.

Matt Godwin, Jollyes regional manager, said: “For those people in and around Poole who don’t yet know Jollyes, we can’t wait to open our doors and give them a warm welcome. Our friendly and knowledgeable team is really looking forward to giving people in and around Poole, more choice than they’ve ever had for their pets.

“The new store is in a great location, and we’re designing it to be easy as possible for pet lovers to find what they are looking for. It’s a very popular retail park and we’re as excited as a new puppy to open later this month".

As the first store in Dorset, the Poole store will complement Jollyes outlets in neighbouring counties of Hampshire, Somerset, Devon and Wiltshire, including Bridgwater, Chippenham, Congresbury, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Waterlooville.

Backed by Kester Capital, Jollyes has more than 80 stores across the UK. In addition to recent openings in Stockton-on-Tees, Southport, Stirling Wrexham and Cookstown, Jollyes this year acquired Penparc Pet Centres with five stores in the Midlands. New stores are due to open this autumn at Glenrothes, Edinburgh and Robroyston as Jollyes continues to search for new locations across the UK.

More news on the new Poole store, including product ranges and plans for opening day will be revealed in the coming weeks.

An online retailer, who set up her pet supplies business during the pandemic lockdown, is set to expand with the opening of a bricks-and-mortar high street store.

Willow’s Pet Supplies is opening in the Hampshire market town of Bishop’s Waltham on Saturday (August 6).

Owner Victoria Wiggans decided change careers during lockdown and set up the business after getting a family dog called Willow.

“This bundle of black fluff has changed my life, for the better, and it gave me a new purpose in life – to make her life the best it can be whether that be the best food, toys or bedding.  It became my new passion,” she says on the company’s website.

“I decided I wanted to give everyday pet owners the opportunity to buy great quality, locally and UK sourced and eco friendly (where they can be) products that are great for your pet!  So Willow's Pet Supplies was born.”

Dog breeder and trainer backs national first-aid campaign

A dog breeder and trainer is campaigning to ensure that all pet professionals get a qualification in first aid...

A dog breeder and trainer is campaigning to ensure that all pet professionals get a qualification in first aid.

Rebecca Walters runs Pupstarts Breeders in Oswestry, Shropshire, and is supporting the national Safe Pets and People Campaign which is calling for mandatory first aid qualifications for all UK pet professionals.

Alongside the likes of the RSPCA, and national qualification provider the iPET Network, Rebecca feels that it is time to level up pet professional industries and ensure that safety is paramount.

She said: "I have 14 active spaniels and gun dogs on site, so a week doesn't go by without some little scrape. To not have my first aid training doesn't bear thinking about.

"It is a matter of trust too for pet professionals. if you are paying someone to look after your dog you expect them to be competent and give them proper care."

The Safe Pets and People Campaign has recently launched an online petition, and Rebecca hopes that by helping to raise awareness more people will visit www.safepetsandpeople.org and sign it.

She said: "I find it staggering that first aid training isn't mandatory already and I'm sure that many people don't realise that their pet professionals don;t need to have it.

"I hope that people sign the petition and spread the word because this is a very important issue."

RSPCA head vet Jocelyn Toner said: “We advise that all professional dog walkers should have first aid training and we’d be supportive of any campaign to roll this out to include all individuals who work within the pet industry.

“Simple first aid skills could save a pet’s life or ensure an animal receives immediate care before they’re able to see a vet and we think it’s a wonderful idea that the Safe Pets and People Campaign wants all pet professionals - from groomers to breeders - to have basic first aid training.”

Natures Menu has added to its well-loved Country Hunter range with the introduction of a Chicken with superfoods version.

The popular range has now been extended to feature a brand-new single protein option, which adds in one of the most popular protein sources in conveniently sized nuggets. This new addition is set to be a huge success for Natures Menu following the 34% growth within the range in 2021.

Featuring a blend of chicken and superfoods, the new addition endorses high-quality ingredients. Dog owners can relax when it comes to their pet’s diet knowing that Natures Menu values ingredient quality - as with the rest of the Natures Menu range, there are no artificial flavorings, preservatives, or colourings, and all meat is ethically sourced.

The Country Hunter range has already proven to be ever-popular with dog owners, due to the conveniency of the super meaty nuggets. Perfectly sized to make portioning up at mealtime more manageable, they also deter overfeeding for the dog and reduce the risk of food wastage. The nuggets deliver a powerful blend of meat, superfoods and those all-important vitamins and minerals, making for an overall high-quality complete and balanced meal with natural ingredients.

These innovative nuggets are a fantastic way to introduce a raw food diet to dogs and are a highly praised in many specialist pet stores all around the country.”

Natures Menu specialises in raw and natural dog and cat food made with fully traceable quality meats and fish, blended vegetables, fruits, and healthy carbohydrates - and uses British suppliers and ethical product sources wherever possible.

Aquarium athletics at National SEA LIFE Centre

The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham has thrown its very own sports day, as the competitive spirit flooded through a city hosting the Commonwealth Games...

The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham has thrown its very own sports day, as the competitive spirit flooded through a city hosting the Commonwealth Games.

The centre hosted a day full of aquatic athletics for its sea creatures, with different games held throughout the day for the animals.

Otter-ly adorable sea otter duo, Ola and Ozzy, have been enjoying all the gaming action with the animal care team, as they took on some gymnastics – minus the leotards! The paw-some pair were supplied with hula-hoops by the animal care team, and the duo have been having a whole l-otter fun with the new sport!

And the pair aren’t shy of sports, as last year they built up a psychic reputation, as they correctly predicted the results of the England team’s football matches during the delayed men’s EURO 2020 competition.

Elsewhere, the cheeky and curious Pablo and his fellow Gentoo penguin pals, will be joining in on the Birmingham project called ‘The Big Whistle’, taking place today.

The Big Whistle is a project honouring Birmingham’s history of whistle making and inspired by the ‘All the Bells’ idea which was carried out at the London 2012 Olympics. The Big Whistle encourages everyone in Birmingham, including the flippered friends, to join in with a joint whistle at 2:22pm on July 28th.

As the penguins can’t whistle, they’ll be joining in on the activity by ‘honking’ instead, so they can still join in with the local fun at the centre.

On top of this, the penguins have been making a splash in the diving world, as they attempted to showcase their inner Tom Daley and take the plunge into the icy water.

Amy Langham, General Manager at National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, said: “The games are such a great experience and we’re so happy that they are hosted here in Birmingham. The event is huge for our city, so we wanted to ensure our animals weren’t missing out on the action too!

“Both our adorable sea otters Ola and Ozzy, and our Gentoo penguins are getting to enjoy their very own SEA LIFE aquarium athletics as we want to not only ensure they are receiving their important enrichment, but they also have some much-deserved fun too. We can’t wait to welcome visitors from all over the world to our attraction during this amazing sporting event, who knows they might even get to see some expert diving skills, worthy of a gold medal, from our various resident sea creatures?”

Johnson’s chairman David Johnson sadly passes away

Johnson’s Veterinary Products Ltd has announced that its chairman David Johnson passed away peacefully on July 21 in Good Hope Hospital, after a short battle with illness...

Johnson’s Veterinary Products Ltd has announced that its chairman David Johnson passed away peacefully on July 21 in Good Hope Hospital, after a short battle with illness.

David joined the family business in 1970 after qualifying as a chartered accountant and became a highly respected figure within the UK pet trade. He oversaw the development and success of Johnson’s as it transitioned from local family business to international pet healthcare brand.

In a statement, Johnson’s said: “The loss of the company’s figurehead is keenly felt, following on so closely to the business celebrating 100 years of caring for the nation’s pets, in May 2021. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but especially his family, friends and colleagues.

“Not only was David responsible for turning Johnson’s Veterinary Products into one of the UK’s leading pet healthcare brands, but he worked tirelessly to help raise the profile and professional standards across all aspects of the UK pet trade.

“The company and the wider UK pet trade has lost one of the great champions of the industry and his passing reduces considerably the experience and expertise that has helped the business and the sector move forward to the respected positions both find themselves in today.”

Innocent Hound’s air-dried food now in smaller packs

The Innocent Hound has launched its award-winning air-dried dog food in smaller, 1.5kg packs...

The Innocent Hound has launched its award-winning air-dried dog food in smaller, 1.5kg packs.

Founder, Chloe Heaton commented: “The air-dried food category has seen a significant growth as its convenience and raw food similarities become more widely understood.  The 1.5kg pack size caters better for small and toy breeds, and also works well for those looking for a short-term raw food substitute whilst they’re away from home with their dogs.”

The new pack size is initially available in 3 flavours, British Lamb Casserole, Wild Salmon Fishcakes and British Beef Stew. The recipes are grain free, single protein and made with freshly prepared, raw British meat or MSC fish.

The Innocent Hound’s air-dried food is handcrafted in Yorkshire using a bespoke air-drying system.  The raw ingredients are not exposed to heat above 40°C and so the nutrients and vitamins are maintained. The result is a semi-moist, great tasting feast that offers the benefits of feeding a raw diet, with the convenience of a kibble.

The food is suitable for both adult dogs and puppies from eight weeks.  The packaging is 100% recyclable and includes a resealable pouch which keeps meals fresh for up to eight weeks once opened.  The 1.5kg pack has an RRP of £23.  For a sample and more information please contact woof@theinnocenthound.co.uk.

People feel more relaxed when with their pets

Pets and people are spending quality time together – from exercising (37%), visiting the coffee shop (19%) and even celebrating birthdays (41%), according to a new survey by Purina Pro Plan...

Pets and people are spending quality time together – from exercising (37%), visiting the coffee shop (19%) and even celebrating birthdays (41%), according to a new survey by Purina Pro Plan.

And not only are pets getting more out of life as a result, people are also feeling the benefit – with respondents saying they feel more relaxed (60%), less lonely (55%), physically fitter (44%), and more confident (19%) when they spend time with their pet. Purina’s new supplement range aims to help support pets to live their best lives, enabling them to continue to do the things they love to do alongside their owners, even when they meet challenges along the way.

We all want more out of life and increasingly we’re bringing our pets along on the journey too. Purina® asked over 1200 pet owners about the health and wellbeing activities they enjoyed with their pet and found that pets and their owners were getting more out of life together. Pets are joining their owners on days out – with 33% saying their pets come along on holidays and events. Over a quarter (28%) meditate and spend quiet time with their pet. And the benefits are not just felt by pets – 19% said that owning a pet helped them feel more confident in social situations and 55% said they felt less lonely as a result of the companionship offered by their pet.

It’s well documented that pets help to support their owners’ wellbeing – whether that’s encouraging them to stay fit and active or providing much-needed emotional support during stressful times. But pets too can face difficulties from time to time so pet parents are now looking for ways to return the kindness and support their pet’s health – and for many the answer is to be found in supplements.

It is estimated that around 40% of dogs experience some kind of health or welfare challenge during their lives. This can be due to traumatic injury or ill health, but can include lifestyle challenges such as moving house, getting lost, or facing changes in family structure or routines. Cats and dogs that are ageing can also experience reduced immunity, joint stiffness, or anxiety which may be exacerbated by diminished hearing or sight. All of these ‘bumps in the road’ may require support for a limited period of time, or sometimes a little longer, which may be met by giving their cats and dogs nutritional supplements. Around 25% of all pets that are fed supplements are given them all the time.

Purina vet, Libby Sheridan, says pet parents increasingly view their pets as members of the family and want them to benefit from the same levels of care that they give themselves, “Most lifespans – for pets and people – are longer than their ‘healthspans’ which relates more to the quality of life. Many of us will have experienced ‘bumps in the road’ that affect our health and wellbeing and understand that sometimes we need help to get us through that rough patch. With that understanding, pet parents are often looking to find ways to provide additional support to improve the quality of life of their pets.”

She continued, “Supplements can provide extra support when pets need it and together with a high quality, complete and balanced petfood, exercise, and access to veterinary care, they can help pets live long and happy lives.”

PetQuip reveals finalists for prestigious Industry Awards

Who will celebrating winning a PetQuip Award in 2022?

The PetQuip trade association has announced an impressive list of finalists for this year’s PetQuip Industry Awards.

Such is the popularity of the PetQuip awards that a record number of entries were received, and following preliminary judging, these have now been whittled down to a list of finalists.

Two new categories – ‘Celebrating Green and Organic’ and the ‘Sustainability Award’ – have been introduced this year to reflect the growing trend towards ‘eco’ initiatives.

The Theresa Swann Trophy for Exporter of the Year, sponsored by Group 55, will once again be presented in memory of PetQuip’s former Head of Events & Administration who is fondly remembered by many.

Judging will be carried out by an independent judging panel, including industry experts and pet retailers, during August.

The award winners will be announced at an Oscar-style ceremony on Sunday, 25th September 2022, immediately after the first day of PATS Telford with a drinks reception starting at 7.30pm.  “It is always a fun evening of networking, entertainment, food and drink, and gives retailers and exhibitors an opportunity to get together informally. We’ve made a few tweaks to the format of this year’s event, so it promises to be a really special evening,” said Emma Brazier from PetQuip’s events team. Tickets can now be booked by visiting www.petquip.com/awards and downloading the form or by calling 01959 565995.

Pat Flynn, Trade Association Manager of PetQuip, added: “We have received an impressive number of entries for 2022 and the quality of the finalists is so high the judges will have a difficult job in choosing the winners.”

New for this year, the organisers of Zoomark International have donated a raffle prize of a trip to Bologna (pictured below) in 2023, including flights and full board hospitality in a superior hotel for two nights, enabling the lucky winner to visit the show.

Pet shop warns customers to stop buying bird feed

A Scottish pet shop is asking customers to stop buying wild bird food in an attempt to halt the spread of avian flu.

Bird feed is normally a top seller for Petcayr By T & G Hutchison Pet Supplies in Ayr but after local council chiefs announced they had collected 500 dead birds from South Ayrshire beaches, the pet shop owners launched their appeal to customers.

On the pet shop’s Facebook page owner Catherine Hutchinson said: “This is so bad for business but we feel duty bound to get this information out to our customers.

“Avian flu has been detected in the bird population in Ayr, Prestwick and Troon.

“Feeding the wild birds means that they congregate in one area, making the disease much easier to pass around.

“No one looking after their garden bird population wants to see their feathered friends come to harm so bird table hygiene, which is always very important, is now of huge importance and it may be worth considering just not feeding your garden birds until this outbreak is over.

“It’s also of huge importance not to let your dogs have the opportunity to come into contact with bird carcasses as many are washing up on the beach.”

Independent-backing supplier secures 100th retail partner

Karnlea has notched up its 100th retail partner – only five months after launching the UK’s first ambient bone broth for cats and dogs..

Karnlea has notched up its 100th retail partner – only five months after launching the UK’s first ambient bone broth for cats and dogs.

The Belfast-based company has targeted independent retailers, tapping into the expertise of shop staff to convey the health benefits of the fresh-packed product.

Karnlea’s founder Lara McCullough believes that independent pet retailers are key to influencing, educating and informing pet owners.

“We put independents front and centre our marketing strategy,” she said. “Karnlea offers something totally new and we believe they are in the unique position as trusted retailers with expertly trained teams to convey our product’s benefits and help solve customers’ pet problems like skin, coat and digestive issues.”

The key milestone was boosted by the acquisition of Just for Pets as a new customer in April. The company has 21 outlets across the UK with an emphasis on natural products and ingredients.

Just for Pets Senior Merchandiser, Leanne Blunn, considers Karnlea the perfect fit for its stores.

“It's great to be able to extend what we can offer our customers to assist the health and wellbeing of their pets,” she said. “With 100% natural ingredients, recyclable and sustainable packaging and off-the-shelf convenience, it made perfect sense for Just for Pets to showcase Karnlea to all customers, not just the one's shopping in our raw department, so that more pets will benefit from it.”

Sammie Hunt, owner of Redpaw in Plymouth, called Karnlea Bone Broth a “must have” product.

“There are many reasons why pet owners should have bone broth in their cupboard: to hydrate their dog or cat on a hot day or before exercise, to supplement their diets and improve joint, skin and coat conditions and to provide a gentle food should their pet suffer from digestive issues or need to recuperate from sickness,” she said.

“I am really excited about being able to stock Karnlea,” she added “The quality of the ingredients and the level of nutrients make it an ideal standby and unlike similar products, it doesn’t need to be frozen.”

In addition to bricks and mortar establishments, Karnlea is also stocking online retailers, particularly those specialising in products that offer health benefits.

Enzo’s Pet Pantry has a focus on holistic and nutritional pet products. It launched after its owner Vaneeta Bassi investigated them for her own dog.

“As a pet owner of a dog with health issues I can personally vouch for the benefits of the product. Enzo suffers from allergies, IBD, pancreatitis and hip dysplasia and Karnlea Bone Broth is perfect for helping me in managing all of his ailments as it is great for his joints, gut, skin and coat. Previously there weren't any suitable broth options available on the market so I would have to make it myself. Thanks to Karnlea, which uses the same ingredients that I would at home, I don't need to do that anymore.

“Its versatility is amazing, it can be given as a liquid, jelly and frozen, all of which appeals to even the fussiest of eaters.  I'm grateful that I can now offer the same tried and tested benefits of Karnlea's products to my customers,” she said.

PATS is ‘a fantastic platform for business’ says award-winning exhibitor

As PATS Telford prepares for its biggest show ever in September, the boss of an award-winning company says the UK’s pet industry exhibition is a “fantastic platform for business”.

Entrepreneur Tracey Voss, managing director of pet product manufacturer Tailor-Grace, attended the very first PATS show at Sandown Park in Surrey in 2009.

Tracey, founder of pioneering products such as ‘Huskaloo’, the world’s first eco-friendly compact cat litter made from coconut husks, said she felt “tied up with the history of PATS”.

And she had high praise for PATS and the organising team behind it for having developed the exhibition into “a fantastic platform for businesses”.

“I feel I’m tied up with the history of PATS because I exhibited at the very first one, at Sandown in 2009. I saw what PATS did for the industry early on, by creating an independent platform for visitors to attend and exhibitors like myself to showcase new products,” said Tracey.

“Having been there from the very beginning, I’ve watched PATS go from strength to strength. It’s now a fantastic platform for businesses, particularly PATS Telford. The site is accessible, easy to park at, central and it’s housed in a big, roomy hall.”

Tracey, who has worked in the pet trade for 25 years and has just been shortlisted as a finalist for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2022, has also previously won five awards at PATS for her products.

Last year, Huskaloo was named a New Product Award winner at PATS Telford 2021. And it also won Gold in the ‘Innovations In Lockdown’ category at the PetQuip Awards 2021.

Tracey added: “I’d like to thank and pay tribute to organisers Gordon Thomas and his hardworking team for creating what has become a terrific, well-put-together show.

“PATS is the platform for the British pet industry to showcase its products. It attracts key visitors not just from the UK, but also from overseas, all under one roof. It’s fantastic, especially as an event at which to launch new products.

“And the size and wide reach of PATS also spans a spectrum of categories within the pet sector, attracting groomers, boarding kennels, independent retailers and big supermarkets.

“PATS has hugely grown in popularity and is certainly a lot bigger than the very first PATS I remember attending all those many years ago.”

PATS Telford is taking place at the Telford International Centre on Sunday and Monday, 25th and 26thSeptember 2022.

Visitors to the show can register online for free entry at the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk. A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.
