Trial phase of PIF Export Scheme successfully delivered

The PIF Export Scheme successfully passed its trial phase with pallets travelling across Europe and safely delivered to their destinations.

The Trial Phase follows months of due diligence by the PIF team who, after hearing from members about export difficulties, have been working hard to create a scheme which enables manufacturers and suppliers to export products to the EU containing animal protein in a cost effective and efficient way.

Jonathan Rees, director of Pero Foods, who took part in the trial phase, said: “Since Brexit, exporting products to the EU that contain animal protein has been significantly more complicated so we very much welcome the introduction of the PIF Export Scheme.”

Nigel Baker, CEO of PIF, added: “We are delighted to have completed the trial phase and look forward to facilitating weekly shipments in the near future. We would encourage any businesses interested in taking part in the scheme to register their interest as soon as possible.”

The next shipment will take place this month; to receive a quote, or to express your interest in booking pallets onto this delivery, please email Daniel Everett at export@petfederation.co.uk

The next shipment is open to all pet businesses however future shipments will be specifically for PIF members. To join PIF today, visit PIF – Pet Industry Federation (petfederation.co.uk)

My Anxious Dog launches ultimate safety training lead

My Anxious Dog has launched the ultimate safety training lead with two carabiner clips. Its twisting lock is harder to unclip than a standard lead so it feels strong and secure...

My Anxious Dog has launched the ultimate safety training lead with two carabiner clips.

This newly designed lead is to give owners peace of mind. Its twisting lock is harder to unclip than a standard lead so it feels strong and secure. Ideal when walking with a reactive dog that can lunge.

It is multi-functional and  perfect for using with a harness to stop pulling. It allows two points of contact making dog walking easier and more pleasurable as it stops dogs pulling on a lead and reduces lunging and its impact on the owner. Attaching your lead like this can help influence your dog's posture, helping them find their own natural balance and can assist in the prevention of pulling because the dog cannot pull forward in a straight line.

The multiple heavy duty O rings on the lead means it can be used as a normal lead of varying lengths, the possibilities are endless. It can be used short, medium or long lead, around the waist and go hands free.

It’s 2M long and made from yellow nylon, so soft and secure to hold even in the wet. A new feature is the reflective stitching for the dark winter walks.

The new leads are 2.5cm wide for bigger dogs and now with two carabiner clips at each end making it the ultimate safety lead, which adds security and peace of mind. The rotating clip also stops the lead from twisting.

Team this up with our new 'KEEP DOGS AWAY' lead slips we hope we can make owners of anxious dogs feel as confident as possible while out and about.

A versatile tool that every anxious dog owner should have in their collection.

Study reveals the true risks of anaesthesia in dogs

A new VetCompass study, led by the Royal Veterinary College and the University of Manchester, has revealed a relatively low risk of death from sedation and general anaesthetics for dogs in the UK. A new VetCompass study, led by the Royal Veterinary College and the University of Manchester, has revealed a relatively low risk of death from sedation and general anaesthetics for dogs in the UK. The research was carried out with the aim of generating up-to-date information to help improve shared decision-making between veterinary professionals and owners.

The paper, ‘Mortality Related to General Anaesthesia and Sedation in Dogs under UK Primary Veterinary Care’, published in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, used data from more than 150,000 dogs attending first opinion veterinary practices around the UK. The study examined the overall risk of death for each dog which had at least one sedation and/or anaesthesia procedure over a set period of time. The study also specifically focuses on anaesthesia related to neutering (spaying and castration) in dogs because these procedures are so common in the UK and the worry about the anaesthetic risk can cause real concern for owners.

The findings showed that currently this risk is 14 deaths in 10,000 dogs within two weeks of sedation/anaesthesia procedures carried out for any reason, of which 10 deaths per 10,000 are within 48 hours of these procedures. For neutering surgeries specifically in dogs, this risk was much smaller, with one death in 10,000 neuter procedures related to sedation and/or anaesthesia. No association was seen between the age of puppies at the time of neutering and risk of death.

Dogs in the UK often undergo general anaesthesia for a range of procedures, from routine neutering to dental procedures and invasive surgeries. While in humans the risk of death linked to anaesthesia during surgery is minutely small, general anaesthesia carries higher risks for companion animals. The use of anaesthesia during surgery can lead to major complications for dogs and, in some cases, death. Weighing up these benefits and risks for anaesthesia and surgery can be a major source of distress for owners.

Some of the key factors associated with increased risk of sedation and anaesthetic-related death in this new study included:

  • Older age
  • Poorer overall health
  • More urgent surgeries
  • Certain breeds such as Rottweilers and West Highland White Terriers compared with mixed breeds.

Factors that were associated with decreased risk included breeds such as Cocker Spaniels compared with mixed breeds.

The team also investigated whether flat-faced ‘brachycephalic’ breeds were associated with higher risk. Surprisingly, longer-nosed ‘dolichocephalic’ breeds showed four times the odds of sedative/anaesthetic-related death compared with medium-length nose dogs, whereas no additional risk was seen in flat-faced breeds.

Vets and owners must consider the risk of sedation and/or anaesthesia for each individual animal, and evaluate the risk of the surgeries against potential benefits to the dog’s life before deciding whether to proceed or not. This decision-making is particularly challenging for owners in relation to elective neutering surgeries, which are often carried out in young puppies but are not needed to immediately save lives, but rather to potentially improve future quality of life for both dogs and owners.

Overall, these results provide some reassurance for the veterinary and dog-owning communities regarding the safety of neutering for young puppies, as well as the relative safety of sedatives and anaesthetics for more complex procedures.

For older dogs, those with poorer health or undergoing planned complex surgeries, the results emphasise the value of careful planning to manage the anaesthetic risks. Urgent procedures, regardless of complexity, were shown to carry greater risk and therefore should be approached with high vigilance and caution.

Dr Dan O’Neill, Associate Professor in Companion Animal Epidemiology at the RVC and co-author of the paper, said: “Waving a tearful goodbye to your beloved dog as they are admitted for an anaesthetic at your veterinary surgery can be one of the scariest moments of many dog-owner’s lives. This new VetCompass study can help owners deal with these fears by understanding the real anaesthetic risk is not that high: 14 deaths in every 10,000 dogs. Decision-making based on the known can now replace fear of the unknown.”

Dr Stephanie Shoop-Worrall, Research Fellow in Epidemiology and Data Science at the University of Manchester and lead author of the paper, said: “VetCompass is an invaluable resource that has allowed the study of anaesthetic risks from dogs across the UK. These results can help reassure owners of the relative safety of sedation and anaesthesia in dogs, which is only getting safer over time, and can also prompt practice changes for veterinary surgeons to decrease risks further.”

Professor Dave Brodbelt, Professor of Evidence based Veterinary Medicine at the RVC and co-author of the paper, said: “This is a timely study that updates the current estimates of anaesthetic risk in the UK. Going forward, the use of electronic patient records from resources such as VetCompass provide an excellent opportunity to monitor this infrequent but important complication seen in veterinary practice.”

Final preparations are being made as the eagerly awaited BETA International exhibition gets set to open its doors at NAEC Stoneleigh at 9.30am on Sunday, 11th September.

The excitement has been building for months with leading companies from the equestrian, pet and country sectors planning their new launches around the exhibition.

Now the wait is almost over for both exhibitors and visitors…and the three-day show can soon begin.

BETA International, sponsored by Neue Schule, always attracts large numbers of dedicated buyers, and this year will be no exception as the event offers fantastic opportunities for business.

All the latest innovations, exciting new product launches, unrivalled networking opportunities and future trends come together to create the industry’s most thriving equestrian exhibition.

On arrival at NAEC Stoneleigh, a large majority of visitors will head for the New Product Showcase, sponsored by Shires Equestrian. The Showcase, located in an exclusive display in Hall 2, is designed to help visitors find new products and services.

All entries in the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent retailers for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, and the winners will be presented with their honours later in the day.

As well as seeing an unrivalled array of new pet products and speaking to top suppliers and manufacturers, visitors will also be able to listen to talks from prominent industry figures. There will be a strong line-up of speakers for three days of seminars with a wide range of topics covered, all designed to give retailers ahead-of-the-game ideas on new lines, new approaches and new profit potential.

BETA International will also showcase saddlery craftsmanship and the skills of talented apprentices over the three days as they compete for top awards in the Society of Master Saddlers’ competitions.

Always a popular draw for visitors to the trade fair, the apprentice activity brings a lot of interest to the competition area to see the range of leather work being made.

One favourite area of the show is the NAF Five Star Gin & Fizz Bar, where exhibitors can speak to their customers in a relaxed setting. Instantly recognisable with its striking black and gold graphics, the bar will enjoy a high-profile presence in Hall 2.

Exhibitors and visitors will also be invited to a special drinks reception after the first day of BETA International, from 6pm until 8pm. The reception is another great opportunity for suppliers and retailers to network while enjoying a glass of bubbly or a soft drink after a busy opening day.

With so much to see and do at BETA International, the exhibition is a must-visit for retailers and buyers. Make sure you don’t miss it. To register for free entry to the show and to view the full list of exhibitors visit www.beta-int.com.

Bestway Wholesale, whose family roots are firmly embedded in Pakistan, has announced immediate fundraising support for the victims of the devastating floods that are continuing to batter communities – thought to be the worst natural disaster to hit the country in recent memory.

Working with the Bestway Foundation, the Wholesale arm is collecting funds through depot collections and JustGiving.com.  The Foundation intends to work closely with world charities on the ground and deliver aid to those that need it the most through its support networks in Pakistan.

Bestway Group, the country’s leading foreign investor, has announced financial and material support to the people of Pakistan of US$1.0 Million. The Group currently owns the United Bank Limited (the 2nd largest private bank in Pakistan) and Bestway Cement (the 2nd largest cement manufacturer in Pakistan).

Speaking of the disaster, Dawood Pervez (pictured above), Managing Director for Bestway Wholesale – whose father Sir Anwar Pervez (Founder and Chairman of the Bestway Group), was born in Pakistan, said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and destruction that has been caused by this terrible flooding across Pakistan.

“As a company which has retained its heritage and links to Pakistan to this day, we want to do all we can to support the recovery efforts and help those that need help the most.  We know how desperate the situation is right now before disease and further suffering sets in.

“With the significant investment already been made by Bestway Group, allows us to actively provide immediate relief; and by working in partnership with local businesses and financial institutions we are putting in place long term sustainable measures so that we can rehabilitate the masses effected by this national tragedy.

“We are now appealing to all our supply partners, friends, customers and colleagues to join with us and support this cause to help the people of Pakistan."

It is estimated that the death toll in Pakistan has exceeded 1,000 since the monsoon rains began but hundreds of thousands more people have been left without homes or shelter, and many without food.  The figures continue to rise daily.

Pervez continued: “We know Pakistan is already reeling from economic and political crises and for months the country has been suffering from double-digit inflation, driven by soaring food and fuel prices.

“Our Bestway Foundation is well-placed to support and help with this crisis – to date we have raised nearly £40m for charities across Pakistan and Europe and we are doing all we can, to ensure funds can be deployed swiftly to get aid to those who desperately need it."

As part of its ongoing commitments, Bestway Group has to-date donated in excess of US$ 22.0 million to the health and education sectors in Pakistan. During the recent COVID pandemic the Group donated substantial sums to aid the relief activities.

Dragon’s Den contestant addresses the WI

When the local branch of the Stony Stratford Women’s Institute recently invited a real life contestant  from BBC One’s Dragon’s Den to speak at one of their meetings, it was a case of forget Gucci think Poochie as the members were introduced to Debbie Greaves, founder of the successful pet accessory brand, Barking Bags.

Barking Bags are fast becoming an essential companion for any fashionista dog walker. Their fashionable and multifunctional design allows the wearer the flexibility to use them cross body or as a bum bag, allowing you to carry everything you need without compromising on style. They are weatherproof and suitable for any climate or environment and following their successful appearance on BBC One Dragon’s Den which resulted in a sell-out of six month’s stock in one night, their sales have gone from strength to strength.

“My favourite concept is the mesh pocket to store used poo bags,” mentioned Deborah Meaden, who applauded the company for helping to solve the problem of carrying unsightly dog waste. However, it was Dragon, Sara Davies, who offered investment as she recognised the functionality and stylishness of the bags which come in a range of funky fabrics and luxury leather. There is even a vegan friendly range as well.

Inspired by young British designers, Barking Bags’ ingenious designs not only have mesh pockets for you to carry everything you need whilst on the go including a place to put the unmentionable stuff until you can dispose of it, but some models have reflective strips for added safety when walking in the dark.

Barking Bags was set up in Milton Keynes by former teachers Debbie Greaves and her husband Rob Angell .Having both decided to retire in 2014, Debbie and Rob bought their first dog, Maisie a Cockerpoo. Wanting to remain active and to provide some additional income, Debbie started working part-time in a charity helping to re-engage vulnerable teenagers through supported volunteering. “We wanted to stay active in retirement so setting up a small business had appeal for us both, little did we know it would become a national company and have such wide appeal,” said Debbie.

Barking Bags is a small family run company headed by Debbie and Rob but they also employ young and enthusiastic people who have taken part on the Kick Start programme.

Since their appearance on BBC One’s Dragon’s Den, Debbie has found herself in demand as a public speaker. She is very keen to promote responsible dog ownership so addressing her local WI was an opportunity to talk about the dog walking guide she had written for the local Milton Keynes area which has all the the poop bins marked out in it and how that led her on to looking for a solution to carrying the full poop bags.

During her talk, Debbie emphasised the ups and down of starting a business including not being afraid to ask for help. Debbie was very keen to employ and support local businesses. Barking Bags works with  MK SNAP a local charity whose supports people with special needs and they help pack the bags as part of their work training programme. Debbie has also used local designers to create their website and branding.

Barking Bags has ambitious plans for the future, with support from Sara Davis and other new business partners they have plans to internationalise the business and create a wholesale offering here in the UK. “We will still be attending shows and writing blogs to help people with their pets but we will be taking on new roles to develop the business. We are also coming up with some new designs and hope one day to produce a bag for us by wheelchair users, “concludes Debbie.

Julie Clothier, President of the Stony Nightingales WI said, “We were absolutely delighted to have Debbie come and present to us. Her talk was so inspiring and informative and it shows it is never too late to set up a successful business and fulfil your dreams.”

Barking Bags were the Best New Business in the PIF Awards 2021, were nominated in the 2021 PetQuip Awards and this year have been nominated for the 2022 PetQuip Awards for, Innovation, Sustainability, Green and Organic and Supplier of the Year categories.

Canine Flow finalist in Business of the Year Award

Canine Flow, a unique dog training business that offers retreats where owners get to understand their pets’ motivations, emotional energy and behaviour, has been nominated for Business of the Year at this year’s PetQuip Awards.

Canine Flow’s founder Caroline Griffith, also known as The Spiritual Dog Trainer, said:  “Where traditional techniques might fail, Canine Flow opens you up to your dog and their energy, supporting them through their behavioural concerns or anxieties to peace and connection.

“Canine Flow is a unique way of being with your dog that aligns your own energy flow, promotes happiness and builds success and purpose in you and your dog—transforming canine behaviour like no other technique before.”

Caroline Griffith has a lifelong love of dogs and for over 20 years she has worked with natural pet care and holistic training techniques. She is mum to Foosa, a beautiful three-legged rescue dog.

Caroline offers a range of products which include private consultations and retreats which take place in the heart of West Wales. These retreats help owners and their dogs to relax, unwind and have the space and freedom to disconnect from the stresses of the world and connect with each other.

Canine Flow also offers a number of home study courses which help owners to understand the principles of the training and Training Practitioner Courses enabling people to train in the techniques and then go on to establish their own businesses. For those showing the highest level of dedication they can go on to become a Master Practitioner.

“Largely due to the increase of dog ownership during the pandemic, issues relating to separation anxiety and any other social situations which inexperienced dog owners have to deal with has increased making it more important to make sure that your dog is relaxed and happy,” says Caroline.

Research conducted by the Health Foundation showed that instances of anxiety and depression were at their highest level during the Covid pandemic since research began in 2011. With uncertainty around the economy, mental health issues are set to rise. Owning a dog has many benefits for mental health and Canine Flow enables dog owners to connect with their dogs in a way that is unique and fulfilling.

Canine Flow is now a worldwide business with nearly 30 practitioners operating across the globe. Dog owners come from across the world to join the retreats and after seeing the transformation in their dogs they then join the Practitioner programme.

“We are absolutely delighted to be recognised by PetQuip for the unique work that we do in the dog training world,” concludes Caroline.

Dorset-based Doggy Doggy Yum Yum see sales soar

The hot summer saw sales soar by 40% for Doggy Doggy Yum Yum, launched in 2020 by Dorset-based artisanal ice cream maker Baboo Gelato,..

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum, launched in 2020 by Dorset-based artisanal ice cream maker Baboo Gelato, has made the finals of the PetQuip Awards in four categories – Green and Organic, Product Innovation, Sustainability and Supplier of the Year.

Sam and Annie Hanbury, the husband and wife team behind multi-award winning Baboo ice cream found that lots of their customers were buying ice cream for their dogs.   Realising that lactose is bad for dogs’ tummies, they saw a gap in the market for the first fully organic, dairy free premium frozen treat for dogs, and so Doggy Doggy Yum Yum was born.

Annie who trained as a professional gelatiere in Bologna, has brought the same care to the formulation of Doggy Doggy Yum Yum as she brings to her ice cream, so it uses the very best organic ingredients. Made with peanut butter and bananas which dogs find hard to resist, this frozen treat uses coconut milk instead of dairy so it is kinder to dogs’ tummies. The ice cream is 100% organic, natural and contains probiotics which come from the live yoghurt, vitamins C and B, iron, magnesium, copper and potassium from the coconut and bananas. If given as an occasional treat after a long walk in the countryside, the park or on the beach this tasty treat is perfect way to reward your dog. The peanut butter is pure and so does not contain sugar, xylitol or palm oil.  Doggy Doggy contains no artificial flavourings, colours or refined sugars.

Baboo Gelato believes that Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is the first frozen treat to meet all the dietary and environmental criteria as it is organic, dairy free, gluten free, suitable for vegans and is environmentally friendly as the container tub is fully recyclable.

Although the name Doggy Doggy Yum Yum tells you who the product is for, it is completely human friendly, and is very popular with human customers as well.

The product is now in 200 stockists nationwide including some prestigious pet stores such as Pet Pavilion in London and the chain of Just For Pets Stores in the Midlands. Doggy Doggy Yum Yum is also available to buy in selected, cafes restaurants and pubs around the country. The hot summer saw sales soar by a further 40% this year.

A fundraising appeal has been launched after fire badly damaged a pet shop just five weeks after it opened.

Medusa Pet Shop in Stockton-on-Tees was struck when a blaze took hold in a storage unit next door at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

Owners James and Paige Tait were alerted by a passer-by and managed to save animals in the shop.

Bira urges new PM to deliver economic challenges head on

The British Independent Retailers Association has called on the new Prime Minister to immediately address the economic challenges facing the country...

The British Independent Retailers Association has called on the new Prime Minister to immediately address the economic challenges facing the country.

In an open statement to the UK's new leader, Bira's CEO Andrew Goodacre urged them to look at support for the high street and deliver.

Mr Goodacre said: "We hope that as well as campaigning to secure the votes, the new Prime Minister has also been working on plans to address the immediate economic challenges, both short term and medium term."BIRA has been raising concerns since last October and we have continued to work with government departments to help them understand the challenges faced by retailers and the high street in general. In the short terms we need to see:

  1. Financial support given to the smaller retailers who are facing 50% increases in energy costs. The new Prime Minister needs to bring forward a COVID-19 type response by introducing  a 100% rates relief for the rest of this tax year.
  2. At the same time we need to improve consumer confidence for the all important final quarter of the year. To do this the government need s to give certainly to the energy bills being paid with no more increases. This will allow households (and businesses) to budget and plan ahead.
  3. Find another way of stimulating demand is to reduce VAT, and this should also be considered.
  4. In the medium term the government needs to introduce a grant or loan system that encourages smaller businesses to invest in energy saving technology, therefore reducing the demand for energy. This could also be done in the form of tax breaks and wholesale reform of the business rates system.

Mr Goodacre added: "Independent retailers are integral to high streets. High streets are integral to communities and so they need support and protection form this toxic economic situation. For many smaller retailers, Covid-19 has drained them of cash and we must not let perfectly viable businesses disappear from the communities they serve."

Rawgeous Pet Food have made the finals in four categories of the PetQuip Awards 2022. The company is up for Green and Organic, Sustainability, Product Innovation and Supplier of the Year. This is the first time it has entered these prestigious awards.

Rawgeous together with their nutritionists have developed a range of tasty recipes to help keep your dog fit and healthy during the winter months. The team believes that it is vitally important to exercise your dog in the colder months and to feed a good diet to improve your dog’s immune system and to protect the joints, coat and skin.

Lorraine Sweeney, co founder of Rawgeous Pet Food alongside business partner, Eoin Sweeny says: “We believe that one of the best ways to feed your dog is on a raw diet because not only are you feeding it what it would have eaten in the wild avoiding any intolerances and allergies that processed and commercial foods can sometime bring, but you are also controlling the protein content and portion size.”

Rawgeous raw dog food recipes include only the highest quality human grade, cuts of tasty Irish prime meat together with the freshest veggies, seaweed, an organic Kefir probiotic which works to maintain a healthy gut and  6 different omega oils.

Rawgeous Pet Food was the first  in Ireland  to be 100% traceable from the farm of origin to the dogs bowl and is still the only pet food  in Ireland that tests EVERY single batch BEFORE it leaves its licensed premises to ensure we far exceed the standard required.

Choose from a wide variety of meat and fish complete meals or our boxes of 12 sausages in a 41 g size which makes feeding the raw diet easier and helps to maintain portion size. This is particularly important if you are feeding a small dog and want to avoid any wastage.

All our food is fresh with no additives and uses the best quality possible- and the results show. We are also proud of our environmental credentials. Our packaging is sustainable 100% plastic free. We use Wool Cool; an incredible insulating material made from 100% wool; a natural ‘smart fibre’.

Aquatic shops face animal welfare nightmare as energy prices rocket

Trade body OATA is warning that aquatic shops and wholesalers could face a terrible choice to euthanise their livestock because rocketing energy bills are making their business unviable.

OATA has today written to the Prime Minister to alert him to the crisis facing businesses within the home aquarium industry if nothing is done to support them through the energy crisis. And it is asking aquatics businesses to add their voice by writing to their MPs to ask for help to highlight their plight.

Like many businesses, aquatics firms face huge energy bill hikes to keep their tanks heated and maintained but this is coupled with mounting concerns over how to manage the inevitable animal welfare issues if they are forced to close.

In addition, with increasing numbers of customers also closing down tanks, aquatic shops are facing more requests to rehome pet fish, because there is limited ability to rehome them elsewhere. Fish are the most populous pet, with industry estimates of 100 million fish to be found in homes and gardens across the UK.

“We have heard of businesses facing 300 to 400% price increases in their energy bills – just one example we’ve heard is a business’s monthly bills going from just under £4,000 to £15,000 while one wholesaler is facing an increase of a million pounds a year. These sorts of cost increases are unsustainable for any company but when you look after live animals you can’t just switch off and turn your back on your business. That means many businesses will face a critical dilemma about what to do with the livestock they hold, raising a very serious risk of mass euthanasia,” said OATA’s Chief Executive Dominic Whitmee.

“This issue is becoming extremely serious and we believe the aquatics industry is the hardest hit of all in the pet sector because of its energy requirements. We are asking the Prime Minister to take urgent and meaningful action soon. Without it there is no doubt we will witness many aquarium businesses closing their doors for good, leaving employees without work during a time of crisis, and millions of pet fish at risk of euthanasia because there is not the ability to rehome them like other pets.”

TV vet warns against feeding ‘dangerous’ treats

Dog-owning Brits are treating their dogs to potentially life-threatening and dangerous chews, a new survey has revealed. Dog-owning Brits are treating their dogs to potentially life-threatening and dangerous chews, a new survey has revealed.

Rory Cowlam, who is a British veterinary surgeon and known as Rory the Vet on CBBC’s The Pets Factor, commented: “As a dog owner as well as a vet, I know how important it is to treat your pet to build that amazing bond, but as these shocking results show a large proportion of people are still feeding dangerous treats to their dogs!

“Dog owners need to stop feeding cooked bones – particularly chicken as these will often splinter and become very sharp leading to a risk of gut perforation and very serious issues. I generally avoid raw hide too – it’s really tricky to digest and can cause both gut and tooth issues.”

The survey was carried out by Pooch Snax, a natural pig ear shaped dog chew brand.

Pooch Snax has launched a new natural and safe dog treat – Porky Ears – that brings something a bit different to the dog treat market. Shaped like ears and produced from 100% British pork, Porky Ears are a natural, healthy and easily digestible treat for dogs to enjoy. Full of protein, they also act as a toothbrush.

A spokesperson for Pooch Snax said: “Treats, as part of an overall nutritious diet, are a great way to bond with your dog. They can help to keep teeth and gums healthy and provide a way to express normal chewing behaviour. However, it’s important that we give our dogs the right kind of treats to avoid unnecessary chewcastrophes.”

Rory continued: “Having been in clinic practice for seven years, I’ve regularly witnessed issues from dogs eating clothes, sofas, balls and all other sorts of things from around the house! Everyday items can be toxic to dogs so it’s incredibly important to be careful when leaving your dog around potential harmful items.

“Speaking as a dog owner and vet, I find it incredibly hard to find a long lasting, healthy, easily digestible chew for Nala and my clients. Porky Ears are a great option because they are made from natural ingredients and high meat content, which means they are healthy, and they are easily digestible because they have no cartilage or ligament ingredients.”

Pooch Snax will be showcasing Porky Ears at PATS Telford on 25-26 September, on stand K11.

Record number of new products at PATS Telford

Seeing the latest pet product launches under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this September’s show at the Telford International Centre is set to unveil a record number of new items...

Seeing the latest pet product launches under one roof is one of the major attractions to PATS visitors, and this September’s show at the Telford International Centre is set to unveil a record number of new items.

An impressive line-up of more than 300 entries to the popular New Product Showcase is a positive sign that PATS Telford exhibitors are excited about their latest products and can’t wait to show them to visiting retailers and buyers.

Products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers on the first day of the show (Sunday, September 25) to decide the winners of the New Product Awards.

There are eight categories in the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, and past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.

Henry Bell won the Best Bird Products Award at PATS Telford in 2021, and sales manager Alkan Gittins said: “We were delighted that the Henry Bell Sterling 3in1 Squirrel Proof Feeder was recognised at the awards last year. It takes time and planning to develop innovative new products and to have those efforts acknowledged is really motivating for us. The award has undoubtedly raised awareness of not only this but other products in the Henry Bell Bird Care range and has certainly had an impact on sales.”

Other winners at PATS Telford last year agreed that an award can have a great impact on a product’s launch.

Chris Broadbent, of Naturaw, was thrilled to have won the Best Dog Treats Products Award on the company’s first appearance at PATS Telford in 2021. “It helped us to get through the door with new suppliers and boosted direct customer sales. Our range of products has also expanded on the back of the win.”

And Chris Brierley, of Cotswold Raw, commented: “It was a real seal of approval for our new range Butcher's Block to win the Best Dog Food Products Award. It certainly grew sales yes, and awareness too.”

Adam Marsden, head of sales and marketing at Ancol, said: “We were delighted to win the Best Dog Accessories and Toys category with our Jawables Bad Boys at PATS Telford 2021. It gave us a great talking point at the show, and we merchandised the trophy next to the product on the stand. Sales have been really strong on this particular product and we know the award helped drive this – actually we sold out earlier this year before our stock was replenished.”

The Showcase is designed to help visitors to find easily the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.

The New Product Showcase entries will be displayed under the following eight award categories:

  • Cat Food and Products
  • Dog Food Products
  • Dog Treat Products
  • Dog Accessories and Toys
  • Dog Harnesses, Leads and Dog Wear
  • Small Animal and Bird Products
  • Pet Care Products
  • Grooming Products

With so many new products on show and more than 210 exhibitors attending PATS Telford this year, the exhibition is set to draw an equally impressive amount of visitors.

A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website www.patshow.co.uk together with information on how to reach the venue and regularly updated show news.

PATS Telford takes place at Telford International Centre on Sunday, September 25, and Monday, September 26.
