Ex-RSPCA chief vet launches Pet Lighthouse to help owners navigate the fog of modern pet care

As the UK dog population hits a record 15.5 million, pet owners are facing a new dilemma: veterinary medicine can now do more than ever, but is it always in the animal’s best interest?

Former RSPCA Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Caroline Allen is concerned by reports that the profession has lost the confidence and trust of many pet owners.

With the CMA (Competitions and Market Authority) raising questions insisting on greater transparency, its highlighted a landscape where a third of pet owners (approx. 9.5 million) avoid visiting their vet and a quarter worry about their pets being over treated.

Helping pet owners find clarity, Dr Caroline Allen has launched Pet Lighthouse, an independent ‘second opinion’ consultancy that moves beyond the clinical diagnosis to put animal welfare and family needs back at the heart of the conversation.

“We are a nation of devoted pet parents, but more medicine doesn't always mean a better life,” says Dr. Allen. “In a world of high-tech diagnostics and 15-minute vet appointments, owners are often left in a ‘fog’ of complex choices. They aren't just asking ‘what is wrong?’– they are asking ‘what is right for my pet, and my family?’”

Pet Lighthouse acts as an independent advocate, offering:

  • The gift of time: Extended, unhurried consultations that allow families to process complex information away from the pressure of a busy clinic.
  • Welfare beyond health: A holistic look at a pet’s daily joy – assessing environment, behaviour, and routine to improve quality of life, not just managing symptoms.
  • The ‘good life’ vs. ‘long life’: Expert guidance on balancing the natural desire for more time with a pet against their dignity and comfort.
  • A collaborative bridge: Working alongside an owner’s existing vet to provide clarity, helping families feel informed and confident before returning to their practice for treatment.
  • Independent clarity: A professional "second pair of eyes" free from corporate pressures, ensuring treatment plans fit the family’s unique reality.

“Every pet is an individual, and every family has a different threshold: emotionally, financially and practically,” Dr. Allen adds. “Pet Lighthouse is about providing the clarity to choose the right path – one that prioritises the wellbeing of the animal and the peace of mind of the owner.”
