Pets Corner will close its PamPurredPets shop in Cheltenham on Saturday as the family-run business focusses its attention solely on an existing Pets Corner store located five minutes drive away.
Charlotte Sturmey, Marketing Manager for Pets Corner, said: "Last year PamPurredPets and Pets Corner joined forces which gave us a PamPurredPets and a Pets Corner, less than a 5 minute drive from each other in Cheltenham. We have done our best to keep both open, unfortunately the rent and rates are too high to be able to justify trading from both locations.
"The Pets Corner, located at the Waitrose Complex, Honeybourne Way, has plenty of free parking and a fabulous range of great quality products that the PamPurredPets customers are used too, as well as some fabulous new ones."
PamPurredPets was bought last year for £6million, in a takeover which made family-run Pets Corner the second biggest pet retailer in the UK, next to Pets at Home.
Customers of PamPurredPets in Market Place, Winchcombe Street, first learned about its close from the staff members. A customer sign later stated: "We are sad to be leaving but please enjoy 50% off accessories and 20% off in store."
Pets Corner said it is doing its best to relocate three members of staff to alternative branches.
"Sadly a few other PamPurredPets stores have been in a similar position to the Cheltenham store and have had to close," added Charlotte.
"Integrating PamPurredPets into Pets Corner has been a challenge. There was a slightly rocky start, however, the stores are going from strength to strength and responding well to their re-fit and/or rebranding."
A total of 11 PamPurredPets stores have gone through a rolling refit and rebranding programme that includes that includes improving and upgrading them.
"It’s now over a year since the change and we are happy to say that it feels like a family again – just a much bigger one," said Charlotte.

HOWND - the founder and organiser behind the fourth national Bring Your Dog To Work Day - is celebrating the success of Britain’s favourite day at the office after record numbers of participation.
Last Friday (June 23) thousands of businesses from across the UK welcomed their employees along with their dogs into the workplace. Raising money for animal welfare while promoting the benefits of bringing dogs into safe work environments are the aims of the event.
The day had extraordinary social media engagement from participating businesses, culminating in the #BringYourDogToWorkDay hashtag trending at number #1 on Twitter. Verified accounts such as comedian Ricky Gervais, Larry the Cat from 10 Downing Street, The Grand Tour, Coronation Street, Xbox, Shrek the Musical, Tennis TV, London Fire Brigade, as well as regional police forces, hotel chains and recruitment agencies all tweeted their support.
The day also gained significant coverage in the press, including The Telegraph, Metro, Daily Express, Evening Standard, BBC and many more news and radio outlets.
“This has definitely been the most popular Bring Your Dog To Work Day yet,” explains Jo Amit, co-founder of HOWND.
“It was incredible to see the level of participation from businesses across the UK. Some of the photos from social media are fantastic - it’s a pleasure to see the concept of dogs at work becoming more popular in the UK.
“We only request a £50 minimum contribution from business sponsors, so even though the event goes viral every year, our biggest challenge is raising substantial funds for the charities. We encourage businesses to bring in donations for their own causes too by using the hashtag #bringyourdogtoworkday. This resulted in hundreds of businesses across the country raising money on the day for their own local charities.
“We’d like to thank everyone who took part, especially the official business sponsors that participated via the official channels. We welcome all businesses from all industries to take part next year which is set for Friday June 22nd 2018.”
“We’re so thankful to everyone who has supported Bring Your Dog To Work Day and made a donation,” explains Ira Moss, general manager of All Dogs Matter.
“The funds will also go towards the rehabilitation, feeding, medical treatment, neutering, vaccinations and chipping of some of the 300 unwanted dogs we take in every year from private homes, kennels and death row pounds.”

Pets at Home has launched an innovative 24-hour pet finding service, Find My VIP, that allows lost pet alerts to be sent via a mobile phone app.
According to research, one in three pets will go missing at some point, so, the new app, the first of its kind in the UK, will improve the chance of finding a pet quickly. The app works by using Pets at Home’s VIP Club, consisting of 5 million members, who effectively become one huge search party. To use the service, owners simply need to purchase a Find My VIP collar ID from their local Pets at Home store or online at www.petsathome.co.uk/findmyvip, and register the unique 8 digit ID on the tag online or via the Pets at Home app, which is free to download, to activate it. If the worst happens and your pet goes missing, you can immediately then send out an alert to VIP members in your local area notifying them. They will receive a notification with your pet’s missing information including a photo of your pet, their name, breed, temperament and last known location.

Dog needs surgery after wolfing down baby’s bottle teat
Diesel, a young Staffordshire bull terrier, was taken to PDSA’s Swansea Pet Hospital by his worried owner Paula Balint, (40), after he began refusing food and became very lethargic. An x-ray later revealed the cause of the dog’s tummy woes – a teat from a baby’s bottle.

The young Staffordshire bull terrier was taken to PDSA’s Swansea Pet Hospital by his worried owner Paula Balint, (40), after he began refusing food and became very lethargic.
Paula, from Sandfields, Port Talbot, said: “The vets said they would need to do some x-rays. I couldn’t believe it when they told me that he’d swallowed a baby bottle teat.
“It must have been from one of my grandson Ozzy’s bottles but I don’t know where Diesel found it!”
PDSA vets performed emergency surgery to remove the teat before it caused a fatal blockage.
Senior vet Eleri Laine said: “It was very serious because Diesel was so unwell, and we knew we had to act fast before he became extremely poorly.
“He received treatment through our A&E service, which has received fantastic funding support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, and thankfully he made a full recovery.”
Paula said she had a number of baby bottles in the house because she often looks after her young grandson.
She said: “Diesel must have found a teat on the floor or something and he’s wolfed it down whole. I’m now really careful not to leave things lying around.”
Apart from baby bottle teats, Diesel also has a soft spot for people’s shoes which he likes to chew when no-one is looking.
PDSA vets say dogs often like to use their mouth to investigate objects as well as to eat and sometimes a pet will swallow an item by mistake.
The phenomenon is known as ‘pica’ and can prove very dangerous. Objects can cause a problem in the stomach but when they move out of the stomach and into the intestines they can become stuck, causing a life-threatening tear or blockage.
PDSA vets recommend training pets to play with safe toys from a young age which help to curb their temptation to chew other objects, as well as teaching basic commands like ‘drop’ and ‘leave’.

After four years of Royal Canin’s highly successful Rescue Cat of the Year campaign, 2017 sees the competition opened up to owners of rescue dogs as well.
Rescue Pet of the Year 2017 is designed to build awareness for rescue centres and the cats and dogs they care for and rehome, as well as driving business into the specialist pet sector in an active example of the company’s ‘animal first’ philosophy.
Owners who have rehomed a dog or cat from rescue can enter now via Rpyal Canin’s website, with news promoted across all social media. Entries must include a photo of the dog or cat, and a 250 word description of his or her story.
Entry closes at on July 9, with the announcement of 10 cat and 10 dog finalists selected from the entries. The public can then vote for their favourite by visiting http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3499746/Rescue-Pet-of-the-Year-2017 between July 24-31.
The winners will be announced during the first week of August.

Two men have been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with a burglary at a pet shop in Framlingham, Suffolk.
Julian Ellis, 51, of Ascot Drive in Ipswich, and Ashley Griffin, 29, of Horseman Court, Martlesham Heath, were both arrested on June 16 in connection with the burglary at Toby’s Pet Shop, in Bridge Street, which happened on June 11.
A till and a number of charity boxes were stolen. Both were subsequently charged with the burglary and another burglary at shop premises in Kesgrave, overnight on June 15/16 where meats and cakes to the value of £280 were stolen.
Ashley Griffin was also charged with seven counts of thefts from shop, where items including steam mops, curtains, a kettle, a sewing machine and a vacuum cleaner were stolen from different stores in the Ipswich area between March and May this year.
Both men appeared before Ipswich magistrates, and have now been remanded in custody pending their next appearance at Ipswich Crown Court on July 17.

Recent reports in the veterinary press have highlighted a possible severe strain of parvovirus affecting dogs around Hampstead Heath and Regent’s Park. This is a potentially fatal and highly contagious disease that could very easily spread. How can dog owners protect their pet?
All dogs should be fully vaccinated and up to date with boosters, which owners can check with their vet. Dogs that survive parvovirus – which causes severe, often haemorrhagic, diarrhoea and vomiting – can continue to excrete the virus in their stools for weeks afterwards. This can be a source of infection for other dogs walked in public spaces and lead to further outbreaks in the area. The virus can also be brought into homes or gardens on shoes and pram wheels.
British Inventor Kevan Norton says dog owners can provide additional protection by using PooGuard spray on dog faeces. The product kills viruses and bacteria left behind after scooping the poop and one of the viruses it destroys is parvovirus.
Ideally, pet parents who have dogs recovering from parvovirus should avoid public spaces but if this is their only option for toileting their dog then they should avoid contact with other dogs and use PooGuard after picking up their dog’s waste to help keep other dogs safe. Even better, PooGuard contains a bitter repellent which stops dogs wanting to lick the ground where infectious faeces have been removed, which also helps prevent the spread of infection.
One theory is that foxes could be involved in the spread of parvovirus and dog owners can also spray fox poo whether they come across it in public spaces or in their gardens. PooGuard is safe to use on surfaces such as the soles of shoes. For anyone who has a puppy who has not completed their vaccines this is a precaution worth taking before entering the home or garden where the puppy lives.
Kevan says that as well as helping dogs, PooGuard also helps protect people from nasty germs left behind after picking up dog poo, especially on sports pitches and playing fields. There are many more bacteria and viruses that are spread in similar ways to parvovirus and using PooGuard in the recovery period may help to reduce the scale of local outbreaks.

Natures Menu has launched its own Track and Trace service for online deliveries, making it the first pet food company in the UK to do so.
Available to both consumers and trade customers, the service will mean online orders can be tracked easily and conveniently through the website and on mobile devices, as soon as the order is placed.
Once the order is on its way via one of Natures Menu’s own fleet of freezer vans from one of four local depots across the country, the customer will be able to see their allocated delivery slot, the name of their delivery driver and any important updates on their order.
