Small pet specialist moves into dog treat production

Supreme Petfoods, a leading figure in small pet nutrition, is venturing into the canine category with the introduction of Dolly Dog Tasty Bones, Dolly Dog Crunchy Cookies, Danny Doggy Donuts and Danny Dog Yummy Sticks, to its award-winning Tiny Friends Farm range. This strategic move, driven by the company’s robust growth and three decades of small pet nutritional expertise, marks a significant milestone for Supreme.

Recent market research underscores Tiny Friends Farm’s standing as one of the most recognised brands among small pet owners. 53 percent of these individuals also own a dog, and there is significant opportunity to gain the loyalty of these multi-species owners with a brand they already know and trust.

Claire Hamblion, Marketing Director at Supreme Petfoods, explains the company’s strategic move, saying, “Pet owners use Tiny Friends Farm as their main small pet food for its price, availability and quality, but mostly because their pets love the food. With an 83 percent positive buzz about the brand, expanding into the dog category is a natural progression. Small pet owners are ‘pet people’ and we are delighted to offer their canine companions the same exceptional quality and value that their small pets have enjoyed.”

With over 25 years of expertise in manufacturing and selling branded treats from their own bakery, Supreme has been successfully making two of the dog treat recipes featured in the new Tiny Friends Farm range for over two decades. Having previously been sold under private label, the enduring popularity of these recipes highlights existing marketplace demand for both the brand and the formulations. Claire emphasises the company’s dedication to the range extension, stating, “We will be putting all our efforts in to making Tiny Friends Farm as successful in the dog category as it is in small pet.”

Made with the same commitment to quality that has defined the Tiny Friends Farm reputation, the new treats are packed with tasty natural ingredients and gently oven-baked for maximum flavour. Danny Dog Doggy Donuts and Dolly Dog Tasty Bones are formulated with chicken, and Danny Dog Yummy Sticks feature a blend of chicken and garden vegetables. Dolly Dog Crunchy Cookies offer a plant-based option with peanut butter. The treats also contain essential nutrients to support health, from vitamin D3 to promote bone health to vitamin E to support healthy skin and coat. All Supreme’s new meaty dog treats are manufactured in a separate facility to Supreme’s small pet food, to ensure all their foods for pet rabbits and other small herbivores remain meat-free.

To enhance emotional engagement, the dog treat packaging showcases the new Tiny Friends Farm characters, Danny Dog and Dolly Dog, aligning with the rest of the range. The packaging has been designed with in-store displays in mind and retailers looking to stock the treats can benefit from a comprehensive range of point-of-sale material to support sales.

Tiny Friends Farm Danny Dog Yummy Sticks and Dolly Dog Cruncy Cookies come in a 200-gram pack size with a recommended retail price of £1.39, Dolly Dog Tasty Bones come in a 160-gram pack with RRP £1.59, and Danny Dog Doggy Donuts come in a 200-gram pack size with RRP £1.59.

PATS 2024 is THE talk of the UK pet and aquatics trade

The relaunch of PATS 2024 as an all-encompassing three-day exhibition has become THE major talking point with companies operating within a growing UK pet and aquatics trade.

The relaunch of PATS 2024 as an all-encompassing three-day exhibition has become THE major talking point with companies operating within a growing UK pet and aquatics trade.

PATS 2024, the UK’s Pet & Aquatics Trade Show, will take place at Telford International Centre from Sunday 29th September to Tuesday 1st October 2024, and an impressive line-up of companies have already booked their stands for next year’s event with many taking bigger spaces.

Vetfleece, a leading manufacturer of super soft pet bedding for kennels, crates and domestic homes, is one company that has increased its stand space after a highly successful PATS exhibition in October.

Richard Ward, Joint Managing Director of Vetfleece, which also supplies premium leads, harnesses, and car accessories, said: “Vetfleece/AK-9 is wholeheartedly embracing the extension to a three-day event at the PATS pet and aquatics trade show for 2024.

“Following our record-breaking achievement in 2023, where we proudly established 150 new trade accounts in a span of two days, we are maintaining our momentum by keeping our free stock offer – a complimentary stock package valued at £239 for each new trade account – open until PATS 2024. Those interested can take advantage of this offer by visiting (www.green-rocks.co.uk/qr/account).

“The expansion to a three-day event is a welcome development for us. During previous shows, we found ourselves stretched to engage meaningfully with every visitor at our stand. The sheer volume of interest meant that valuable conversations were often cut short. To rectify this, we are planning to double our stand size and double the staff presence for the 2024 show, ensuring that every inquiry and potential partnership is given the attention it deserves.

“With two of the three days falling within the working week, we are optimistic about connecting with more corporate buyers and larger teams from independent pet stores. These are the professionals who interact with end-users daily, and their insights are invaluable to us. The additional day also enhances the social aspects of the event, allowing for more of the successful evening do’s hosted by organiser Gordon Thomas and his team, which have become a highlight for networking and camaraderie. The atmosphere around the Holiday Inn bar is always buzzing, presenting an ideal setting for exhibitors to mingle and exchange ideas that daytime schedules may otherwise preclude.

“The restructuring of PATS for 2024 into one comprehensive event, rather than two separate shows, is a strategic move we believe will yield a more impactful, cost-effective, and dynamic trade show. It also provides us with a better lead time to prepare and launch outstanding products that will resonate with our partners and their customers. We’re gearing up for what we anticipate will be not just our best PATS show to date, but an event that surpasses all expectations and sets a new standard for the pet and aquatics trade.”

Independent pet wholesaler We.pet is also planning ahead for PATS 2024, having booked its stand. Director Daniel Vander (pictured above) commented: “We are really excited at what a three-day event might hold for We.pet! We are confident that footfall over a three-day one-off exhibition will increase with both existing customers and potential new customers making the effort to attend a bigger exhibition.

“We are also hopeful that it will encourage more international customers to make the journey which is a market sector we are targeting and growing in every year. And finally with three days, it gives us and the team an ideal platform to meet, socialise and enjoy the company of our compatriots from all parts of the pet and aquatics trade.”

Companies and brands to have already secured their stand space include: Ancol Pet Products, Cranswick Pet Products (Alpha & Vitalin), Danish Design, Eden Pet Foods, Fold Hill Foods, Forthglade, IPN, Kennelpak, Natures Menu and Nature’s Variety, Nova Dog Chews, Paleo Ridge, Pedigree Wholesale, Rogz, Trixie, We.pet, and Westland (Bucktons and Peckish), among many others.

Retailers and buyers can register their interest in visiting PATS 2024 by going to the exhibition website www.patshow.co.uk, which has all the up-to-date information about the show.

Homeless charity founder awarded OBE

The founder of a North East charity which supports homeless people and their pets has been awarded the OBE...

Michelle Southern (above, second from left), who founded Street Paws charity has been recognised in King Charles' New Years Honours.

The founder of a North East charity which supports homeless people and their pets has been awarded the OBE.

Michelle Southern (above, second from left), who founded Street Paws charity has been recognised in King Charles' New Years Honours, and will travel to Buckingham Palace to collect her award, in recognition of her services to homeless people and their pets.

Reacting to the news, she said: "Things like this just don't happen to people like me, I am completely overwhelmed and I'm also excited for what this award will do in raising more awareness for the charity and our work.

"Getting recognition like this for the charity, its hardworking volunteers, supporters and the issues we represent is huge, and I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who makes Street Paws what it is."

Founded in Newcastle in 2016, Street Paws aims to empower homeless people to keep their pets by their side with the provision of free veterinary care and protect the human animal bond by keeping owners and their pets together wherever possible.

Michelle, 54, who lives in Blyth Northumberland was volunteering at a soup kitchen in central Newcastle when she first saw a homeless person bring their dog.  The experience stayed with her, and she realised that there were no services in place to help if the animal needed check-ups, support or veterinary care.

Keen to make a difference, Michelle, a former veterinary practice manager, persuaded a vet to come down to the soup kitchen with her the following week and the pair worked hard to build trust with the pet owners who were understandably concerned that their best friends might be taken away.

The first pet that the newly established Street Paws team saw was Clyde, a ferret who was a loyal and cheeky companion to his owner. "We quickly became friends with Clyde who needed nothing more than his nails clipped, and this really won everyone over." Said Michelle.

She added: "The general consensus is that around one in ten homeless people have a companion animal with them. This means there are a large amount of pets that need support, and we saw that we could make a difference.

"You have to remember that these people have lost everything and people were very worried that if someone thought that they didn’t look after their pet they would take them away. It took months to fully build up that trust.

"Sometimes people would tell us that their dog saw a vet, when you know that wasn’t true. But the animals were almost always in very good condition.”

"It is all about building trust, and after that people understand that we are here to help."

Street Paws was born, and the registered charity now provides support in the UK across The North East, North West, Yorkshire and Northern Ireland.

In 2018 Street Paws identified a huge problem which is directly impacting on the available services and support that homeless people with pets can receive.

At the moment fewer than 10% of hostels allow animals to come inside.

This creates a terrible choice for pet owners who are asked to give up their pet to access accommodation and support. Fewer than 7% of homeless pet owners said they would give up their pet in exchange for housing in a recent Crisis survey.

In 2019 Street Paws launched an ongoing drive to encourage more hostels to become Dog Champions, and accept the animals of people in need too.

The scheme's aim is to equip hostel staff with the essential skills that they need to ensure a safe place for residents and their pets.

It offers hostels accredited staff training and support, canine first aid training and a first aid kit, advice on pet policies, owner agreements and full veterinary care.

As well as that the charity has launched an online learning platform, and Good Pet Owner Training and dog CV scheme so that service users can demonstrate a responsible approach to their companion animal when moving into permanent accommodation.

Michelle said: "The bond between a homeless person and their pet is well documented and provides many positive mental and physical benefits to the owner.

"Despite this most people who are homeless are asked to give up their pet to access accommodation.  Street Paws charity believes that owning a dog should not be a barrier to accessing support and a safe place to sleep.

"It is essential that as many people make it to a shelter as possible, and we believe that skilling up hostels and helping them to become pet friendly is a giant stepping stone."

The charity is now gearing up to celebrate its eighth birthday, and their good works over the years have not gone unnoticed.

Celebrity supporters and patrons currently include TV vets Dr Scott Miller, Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS and Peter Wright BVSc MRCVS.

Recently North East reality TV star and influencer Vicky Pattison has offered support to the charity advocating for a winter fundraising campaign to support further schemes in 2024.  She also recently joined an event in Newcastle to hand out Christmas treats for some of our four legged hostel residents.

The work of Street Paws was made all the more difficult by covid, but volunteers worked hard throughout the pandemic to support those in need, and implement the Dog Champions Scheme to ensure that as many homeless people as possible are able to access a pet-friendly shelter.

Michelle added: "The Dog Champions Scheme is a real game changer for so many homeless people who have pets, and we hope that more hostels than ever will accept our support to become pet friendly."

Henry Bell has helped a popular garden centre to re-lay its store through its innovative vertical merchandising concept, which has been designed to grow the number of customers purchasing wild bird care products, maximise the potential of in-store floor space and drive an increase in market spend.

The reconfiguration of merchandise at Flowerland, Iver, in Buckinghamshire has provided an aesthetically pleasing and highly effective 21-square-metre store-within-store, dedicated to a broad range of Henry Bell Wild Bird Care feeds and accessories. All work was carried out by the brand’s skilled sales team with ongoing support and guidance from the Henry Bell Head Office.

Tony Clare, Henry Bell Wild Bird Care Commercial Director, said: “Flowerland, Iver, has been a customer for four years and during this time we have worked closely with the store manager and his staff. We have grown to know them and their customer-base extremely well and were delighted to implement the re-lay to boost the business’s sales and improve margin delivery.

“Our merchandising concept might be simple, but it certainly packs a punch, bringing some brilliant commercial benefits to customers who adopt it. We think the Henry Bell display area looks incredible and we’re delighted that Flowerland decided to unleash the potential in this exciting display area.”

Flowerland, Iver, store manager Jack Cox, added: “The Henry Bell sales team has done a superb job. We couldn’t believe how fast everything was – from start to finish in only 48 hours! The reaction from our customers has been extremely positive and we’re certainly seeing lots of the brand’s wild bird products going through our tills.”

Pet crematorium fined for clean air breaches

A pet crematorium in the Cotswolds has been hit by fines and costs totalling nearly £65,000 after it breached clean air regulations...

The operator of a pet crematorium in the Cotswolds has been fined for non-compliance with the requirements of its Environmental Permit.

Time Right of Limekiln Farm, Lypiatt, entered a guilty plea to three charges by Stroud District Council alleging a failure by the company to use the best available techniques at the site to control its emissions to air. On occasions, thick plumes of dark and black smoke were emitted from the site in contravention of permit conditions.

At a sentencing hearing at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court, Time Right was fined £50,000 for these non-compliances – full costs and a victim surcharge raised the total penalty to £64,489.

The District Judge hearing the case considered the evidence and concluded that the company had acted recklessly over a significant period of time. However, it was acknowledged that significant steps have since been taken by the company to address the issue moving forwards.

“Installations operating under a relevant Environmental Permit are inspected by members of the Environmental Protection team at Stroud District Council. Where non-compliance is identified, officers will always work to address those issues with the company as a matter of priority and, where appropriate, undertake enforcement action” said Environment Committee Chair, Councillor Chloe Turner, following the hearing.

Committee Vice Chair Robin Layfield added: “Air quality is an important issue for the whole of Stroud district and this case shows the council’s commitment to taking effective and timely action to protect air quality for everyone.”

Infection Prevention Month inspires 33% increase in hygiene ambassadors

IVC Evidensia celebrated its first ‘Infection Prevention Month’ during autumn of 2023 and in doing so took another step towards meeting one of its key clinical standards and sustainability goals...

IVC Evidensia celebrated its first ‘Infection Prevention Month’ during autumn of 2023 and in doing so took another step towards meeting one of its key clinical standards and sustainability goals.

The organisation held the event throughout October with the aim of further engaging its network with the fundamental principles of infection prevention while also increasing the number of Infection Prevention and Control Ambassadors (IPC Ambassadors) in its practices.

Practice teams took part in a short activity every week to review their effectiveness in hand hygiene, clothes, shoes & PPE and environmental hygiene protocols, plus they took part in a short training webinar on chemical free cleaning.

All activities were led by the practice’s IPC Ambassador, and practices that did not yet have a member of the team in the post were invited to sign up.

This led to a 33% increase in the number of IPC Ambassadors across the network, with more than a third of practices in total across the UK & Ireland now having a named individual responsible for co-ordinating practice infection prevention implementation.

This is a big step towards IVC Evidensia’s goal of having an IPC Ambassador in 75% of sites by 2025, under the ‘Caring for Patients’ pillar of its Positive Pawprint strategy.

Lisa Tolfree, Infection Prevention & Control Manager, UK, said: “It was incredible to see how many of our practices engaged with Infection Prevention Month. It demonstrates the level of importance our teams place on their role of preventing the spread of infectious diseases and in turn support the reduction in use of antimicrobials.

“Our IPC Ambassadors have access to an internal forum that they can use to share knowledge and it was fantastic to see the buzz coming from all over the UK & Ireland as everyone got involved with the weekly tasks.”

All practices that completed the four weekly tasks were entered into a prize draw to win a microfibre cleaning kit for their practice worth £1,000 which promotes both the company’s sustainability aims through reducing chemical use while upholding high standards of hygiene, patient safety and colleague health and safety.

The prize was won by Purton Vets in Cricklade, led by IPC Ambassador Jade Thacker. Jade said: “We’re really pleased to have won the prize draw for the cleaning kit, which we can use to further ensure Purton Vets is a welcoming, hygienic environment for all our clients.

“The Infection Prevention Month campaign was a great opportunity to prioritise this important issue across the IVC Evidensia network.”

Thanks to the success of the initiative IVC Evidensia is planning a further Infection Prevention Month in 2024.

Neue Schule returns as sponsor of BETA International in 2024

Renowned international bitting company, Neue Schule, has confirmed a two year extension of its title sponsor of BETA International...

Renowned international bitting company, Neue Schule, has confirmed a two year extension of its title sponsor of BETA International.

The company has been the headline sponsor for the UK's only equestrian trade show for 10 years and the extension will see them celebrate with the show's 45th anniversary in 2024 (22-23 September) and beyond.

“Neue Schule has been sponsoring and supporting BETA International for ten years,” said Sarfraz Mian BEM, CEO of Neue Schule. “We feel BETA International is fundamental to the equestrian industry and is critical to its success. It's important for networking and bringing companies together so they can see new products coming through, share ideas, meet suppliers and build and anticipate the business for the next season.”

“We cannot be more delighted to continue the partnership with Neue Schule as the headline sponsor for 2024 and '25,” said Claire Williams, Executive Director of BETA. “We are indebted to Sarfraz and his team for their continued support of not just the show, but the trade too, as BETA International really does provide a true hub for our members and the rest of the trade to network, find out about the latest innovations, and learn too. We have a lot planned for 2024 and we're thrilled to have Neue Schule as a big part of it.”

BETA International will take place on Sunday 22nd and Monday 23rd September at the NAEC, Stoneleigh. The tried and tested two-day format will be repeated slightly later in the month to avoid a clash with Burghley Horse Trials. The show will include a range of exceptional brands, offers, seminars, training opportunities and the ability to meet and network with members of the trade.

Bookings for stands are currently taking place, and tickets can also be ordered, for free, through the website for bona fide members of the equestrian trade. For more information, see www.beta-int.com.

Simpler road signs to protect small animals

Hedgehogs and other small animals will be better protected on English roads under rule changes to make it easier for local authorities to put up wildlife warning signs.

Hedgehogs and other small animals will be better protected on English roads under rule changes to make it easier for local authorities to put up wildlife warning signs.

The current hedgehog sign will be updated following feedback from the sector to make it clearer for drivers. Alongside this, rules around the small wildlife warning signs will be relaxed to make it easier for local authorities to put up small wildlife warning signs, helping to better protect hedgehogs and other small animals.

Changes made by the Department for Transport will ensure local authorities are able to place small wild animal warning signs where they are needed most rather than having to apply to the Department on a case-by-case basis.

To mark the change, Transport Secretary Mark Harper visited Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire to meet a host of furry – and spiky – friends, many on the mend from road accidents. Touring the facility, he witnessed a hedgehog undergo surgery for a leg injury, ran a bath for hydrotherapy treatments, helped to weigh animals, and witnessed one hedgehog pose in front of the new-look sign.

Transport Secretary, Mark Harper said: “It was an absolute pleasure to see behind the scenes at the famous Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, where I witnessed the incredible work they do to heal a wide range of wildlife.

“These common sense changes will lead to more small animal signs across the country, cutting down on bureaucracy to help protect both drivers and small animals, improving safety on our roads and making sure fewer casualties are checked in to wildlife hospitals like these.”

The small animal warning sign depicts a hedgehog and was first introduced in 2019. As well as cutting the restrictive red tape preventing them being placed, the Government has also refreshed the design by adding white quills to the hedgehog’s back. This will improve clarity and make it more visible from a distance for all road users.

The changes will also help protect vital crossing routes for hedgehogs and other small mammals, particularly on rural roads. Hedgehog numbers in particular have dropped by 30-75% in rural areas since the millennium, with traffic a major factor in the decline.

Colin Stocker, CEO at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital said:  “On behalf of myself and everyone here at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital we were delighted to welcome Mark Harper to the hospital to hear more about the policy change that will make the process for erecting small mammal road signs easier.

“A lot of the 14,000 animals admitted to us every year come in due to road traffic accidents and making motorists more aware of their presence and encouraging them to be more cautious is a great step towards helping British wildlife.

“We were able to show Mark around our hospital and he was able to see some of the patients we currently have in and meet the veterinary team behind the lifesaving work carried out here. We hope this policy change will result in more signage that in turn will remind motorists to be mindful of British wildlife when out and about.”

The announcement will help reduce bureaucracy for local authorities, allowing them to focus their resources more effectively on delivering for their communities and follows recent announcements committing to improving conditions for motorists across the UK under the Plan for Drivers and Network North.

The Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital was established by Les and Sue Stoker in 1978 as a refuge for injured animals to receive treatment and rehabilitation.

Bira warns of difficult year ahead for traders

The British Independent Retailers Association has said 2024 is anticipated to be a challenging period for shop keepers as economic challengers are still set to bite...

The British Independent Retailers Association has said 2024 is anticipated to be a challenging period for shop keepers as economic challengers are still set to bite.

Bira, which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, said they were expecting more challenges coming up in the coming months - and urged businesses to prioritise resilience and adaptability.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: While optimism usually accompanies a new year, we anticipate 2024 to be another challenging period given the prevailing pessimism in economic growth.

"We expect inflation to stabilise, and interest rates to remain where they are. Economic stability is crucial for us to focus on economic recovery. Bira recognises the need for a stable economic environment to empower its members and foster a climate conducive to business growth," he said.

Mr Goodacre added that consumer confidence also remained key. He said: "Consumers will still lack confidence and will be looking for value and strong brands. We are committed to supporting our members in meeting evolving consumer preferences, ensuring they remain competitive in the market."

Contrary to the digital trend, Mr Goodacre said they had noticed a surprising shift, adding, "The penetration of internet shopping declined in 2023, and we do not expect it to increase in 2024 – most people will want to buy in shops. This insight underscores the enduring importance of brick-and-mortar stores in the retail landscape."

Bira also urged shops to not overlook other important opportunities.

"The older generation represents a real business opportunity – higher levels of wealth and disposable income. We ask that retailers recognise the potential of this demographic, and not to ignore the often-retired generation's significant purchasing power," he said.

Looking locally, Mr Goodacre said there were many opportunities in community collaboration. He added:  "Other opportunities will still be local shopping and business communities working together to create a vibrant, diverse high street that people want to visit and where they want to spend time and money."

Mr Goodacre added that the political landscape also would have a huge effect on 2024. He said: "We will obviously have a general election, and while many may welcome a change of government, it will lead to a period of instability."

New Year resolutions to help pups and the planet

Agria Pet Insurance is sharing how combining regular dog walks with picking up litter can be the paw-fect New Year habit to help both pups and the planet.

Increasing exercise is a common resolution for many and going on regular dog walks is not only beneficial for pup parents to increase their step count, but it’s a great way to maintain the overall health of your pup too.

Becoming more sustainable and helping the planet is another common resolution made by many in January. As such, Agria’s ‘Don’t just pick up poo, pick up litter too’ campaign as well as actively encouraging others not to drop litter is a simple change that many can implement into their daily lives.

Making these a new daily habit could help to ease the UK’s growing litter problem which is currently having a significant impact on the way dog owners conduct their walks. As such, over a quarter of owners (26%) are fearful that their dog will die whilst out on their daily walk as a result of harmful litter.

A third (32%) of owners worry that their dog will come to serious harm, whilst 29% admit to changing their routes to avoid litter and a further 29% refuse to take their dog off their lead in certain areas.

The results of this research highlight the urgency of adopting sustainable practices to combat the litter problem in areas frequented by dog walkers to create safer and more enjoyable environments for dogs and their owners in 2024. Increasing public awareness, responsible disposal of litter, and improved waste management systems are all positive New Year’s resolutions we can all make.

To further awareness of this prominent issue, Agria has partnered with Paws on Plastic, a UK charity (no. SCO51306) dedicated to environmental stewardship, bringing invaluable expertise and a proven track record in fostering positive change.

Paws on Plastic encourages dog owners to start the new year by picking up a couple of pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, communities and the environment. It also educates on the consequences of littering.

Furthermore, the collaboration extends to the involvement of internationally recognised animal rights activist and model, Jodie Kidd. Jodie's passion for the cause and her influential reach serves as catalysts for broader awareness and engagement. Her commitment to the initiative underscores the urgency of the issue and appeals to diverse audiences.

Janet Hughes, UK Sustainability Lead at Agria Pet Insurance, said: "These findings underline the importance of addressing the litter issue. As we enter a new year, this serves as a vital call to local authorities, communities, and dog owners to come together and work towards a more sustainable and litter-free future for the UK's beloved dogs.

“It is crucial that we collectively take immediate action this year to tackle the litter problem in our outdoor spaces. The safety and well-being of dogs, as well as the environment, are at stake. By raising awareness and encouraging responsible behaviour in 2024, we can create a cleaner and safer environment for all. We’re hoping that as many people as possible - whether dog owners or not - join us to play our part in making a difference to our environment - every small effort helps and collectively we can have a big impact this year."

Marion Montgomery, Founder and Chair at Paws on Plastic, said: “Our charity is delighted to partner with Agria Pet Insurance on this wonderful campaign. So many animals, including our precious dogs, are injured by litter dropped carelessly on the ground. As dog owners, we have the opportunity to take a simple action to protect animals when we’re out walking anyway.

“It only takes a second for us to pick up a couple of pieces of litter and with 12 million of us in the UK, out a couple of times a day, it really does add up - actually reducing the amount of litter dropped, as studies show that fewer people drop litter when areas are clean. This is also a great New Year’s resolution to have because it feels great in terms of mental health to take a simple action which has an immediate and visible difference. We encourage all dog owners to get involved - we’d love to see your photos!”

Raw pet food firm celebrates record breaking year

Pet food company Bella & Duke is celebrating after a record-breaking year, delivering over 15 million of its meals across the UK. As well as a number of recent award wins, significant investment in machinery at its production and fulfillment facility and continued growth has seen the team expand to 133 employees, with several roles now available to join the growing team...

Pet food and wellbeing company Bella & Duke is celebrating after a record-breaking year as the UK’s leading subscription raw pet food company. As well as a number of recent award wins, significant investment in machinery at its production and fulfillment facility and continued growth has seen the team expand to 133 employees, with several roles now available to join the growing team.

This year, Bella & Duke has delivered over 15 million of its meals across the UK.

As part of Bella & Duke’s vision of doing right by our pets, this year they have continued to support Therapy Dogs Nationwide to support the incredible work that they do and the dogs that help them do it, including sponsoring four hero therapy dogs with full Bella & Duke dog food subscriptions to keep them fuelled up and doing the best job they can. Bella & Duke also pledged to provide 11-year-old Springer Spaniel Dudley a lifetime supply of food following being saved by Second Chance Rescue after a life of neglect and abuse.

Following the growth, Mark Scott and Tony Ottley, founders of Bella & Duke, were named among the Most Ambitious Business Leaders in the UK, as one of just five businesses in Scotland named in the 2023 LDC Top 50 list. Bella & Duke were also named in the first ever 2023 Scotland Fast Growth 50 index, marking the pet wellbeing company as one of the fastest growing businesses in Scotland.

Bella & Duke were also named Manufacturer of the Year 2023 at the recent Pet Industry Federation Awards 2023. The industry awards recognise and celebrate excellence within the pet industry, showcasing the remarkable individuals and businesses who uphold the highest standards of quality that drive the industry forward. The business was also shortlisted for several other awards including new product of the year for their innovative meal topper, Magic sprinkles, and marketing campaign of the year for their Misconceptions campaign that challenged long held misconceptions about our pets and the food we feed them.

Another landmark moment for Bella & Duke this year saw the pet food and wellbeing company make their first steps into retail through a considered test with Pets at Home, being available in 25 stores.

Following the continued growth, the trailblazing pet wellness company is on the hunt for people who are passionate about animals to help Bella & Duke on its mission to improve pet nutrition and help pets live the healthy, happy and long lives they deserve. Bella & Duke is currently recruiting across engineering, marketing, and customer service, for several roles including Maintenance Engineers, Head of Customer Success, and a Marketing Executive, with more roles going live in the near future.

Office based roles will be based in Bella & Duke’s state-of-the-art Rosyth office, which opened last year and is tailored to meet the needs of both its staff and their pets. Offering flexible working options, “Parklife” is a place the team can bring their closest furry companions and be assured that they’re in the UK’s most pet friendly office.

This year, Bella & Duke also unveiled a brand refresh to better articulate their pet-centred ethos and vision of championing pet health and wellbeing and challenging the status quo so that pet-centred, species-appropriate nutrition becomes the natural choice for every pet owner.

2023 has also seen several new product launches from Bella & Duke, including Magic Sprinkles, a premium topper for dog and cat food that’s not only a tasty treat but designed to help even the fussiest of pets finish every morsel of their meals, and a new cat food product to add to their existing range of species-appropriate raw pet food.

Mark Scott, CEO at Bella & Duke, said: “We’ve always understood the importance of the relationship between pets and their owners, and this has been key to our success. Since starting Bella & Duke with Tony back in 2016 it has been a long but incredibly rewarding experience seeing our vision grow year on year, and 2023 has been no different. Our success wouldn’t be possible without the hard work all our team do each day to help us on our mission. This also wouldn’t be possible without our subscribers that have supported us throughout our journey. We want to do right by our pets and give them the healthy, happy, and long lives they deserve, and we love hearing stories from our loyal community sharing the stories of their pets’ since feeding raw. 2024 is already shaping up to be incredibly exciting for us and I can’t wait to see what it brings.”

New look from Vital Pet Products in the New Year

Following on from the Everyday Essentials & Everyday Low Prices initiatives and new senior team appointments, the Vital Pet Products renaissance continues into 2024 with a new layout and focus for its promotional brochure.

Peter Brame, Group Trading Director, said: “We’ve listened to our customers. Their feedback has been that the products and promotional information wasn’t as clear as it could be. The new look promotional brochure focusses on just the key information about a product, the promotional price that a customer will pay and the POR they can expect to make, now jump off the page.”

Peter added: “Previously, the promotional price published within the brochure was based on just one of the price bands available. This meant that customers were receiving different promotional prices. Now the promotional price that is published will be available to all customers, no matter which price band they are on. Nice and simple.”

Another key change is that promotions will no longer run as periods, with start and end dates moving from month to month.

All promotions will now run from the first day to the last day of the month, allowing customers to plan both their budgets and ordering patterns.

Peter concluded: “There’s even more to come from Vital Pet Products, it’s going to be a very exciting 2024 and we’re looking forward to taking everyone on the journey with us.”

For wholesale enquiries or to request a digital copy of the new promotions brochure, contact the Vital Pet Products sales team at customerservices@vitalpets.co.uk or 01837 883000.
