PATS – the Pets and Aquatic Trade Show – is set to reach new heights following its acquisition by leading global events company Raccoon Media Group.

This development promises an exciting future for the show and its exhibitors, as Raccoon Media Group’s recent launch of an Animal Health Division will bring enhanced resources, international expertise, and vision to support PATS’ continued growth in the UK.

By working in close collaboration with the existing PATS team Raccoon’s Animal Health Division is committed to elevating the event experience and creating new growth opportunities in the UK and beyond for the pet trade sector.

Industry professionals can expect a dynamic evolution of the show, with an expanded focus on product innovation, networking, and insights that will serve both emerging and established brands. The existing PATS team will work closely with the Raccoon Media Group team, combining resources and expertise to enhance and evolve the PATS brand and experience for both exhibitors and attendees. Gordon Thomas, Director of PATS, will continue in his role, working alongside Nicole Cooper, CEO of Raccoon Media Group’s Animal Health Division, to build on PATS’ strong foundations and drive the show to new heights.

Since its inception in 2009, PATS has grown to become the UK’s largest and most respected trade event for the pet and aquatic industries. Originally launched as a modest gathering for pet retailers, manufacturers, and suppliers, PATS quickly gained a reputation for showcasing the latest innovations in pet products, health, and wellness.

Over the years, the show has expanded to feature hundreds of exhibitors, from established brands to exciting new startups, and now attracts thousands of industry professionals and buyers from across the UK and beyond. With a dedicated focus on supporting business growth and providing networking and educational opportunities, PATS has evolved into a must-attend annual event that consistently raises the bar for trade exhibitions in the pet sector.

Gordon Thomas (right), Event Director of PATS, shared his optimism: “Joining Raccoon Media Group is a fantastic opportunity for the PATS brand and our team. Raccoon’s commitment to our industry, alongside their expertise in running successful trade shows, means we’ll be able to take PATS to the next level. I look forward to working alongside Nicole and the broader Raccoon team as we embark on this exciting journey together.”

Nicole Cooper, CEO of the Animal Health Division at Raccoon Media Group, added: “We are thrilled to welcome PATS into the Raccoon family. This acquisition aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver industry-leading experiences in the animal health and wellness sector across the globe. PATS has long been a respected platform in the pet and aquatic trade world, and we’re excited to build on its success and create new opportunities for growth and collaboration across the sector.”

PATS has a well-established reputation as the event in the UK for pet and aquatic industry professionals. With Raccoon Media Group’s resources and strategic vision, the event is poised for an exciting new chapter.

Mike Seaman, Group CEO of Raccoon Media Group, commented on the acquisition: “This is a significant moment for Raccoon Media Group and our new Animal Health Division. We are excited to join forces with the PATS team and combine our strengths. Together, we’re confident that we can continue to grow and enhance PATS’ value to the industry, delivering a world-class event that supports the success of our clients, partners, and stakeholders.”

PATS' new owner unveils Animal Health Division

Raccoon Media Group has announced the formation of a new Animal Health Division as part of its growing portfolio. This division will oversee the company’s well-established National Equine Show and two new acquisitions – PATS and BETA International. Heading the new Animal Health Division is Nicole Cooper (right), who joins Raccoon Media Group as CEO, Animal Health Division. With 30 years’ experience in the Events sector, Nicole brings with her a deep understanding of strategic growth, industry trends, and operational excellence, along with a proven track record of delivering successful, high-impact events that engage and inspire passion-led communities.

Raccoon Media Group announced the acquisition of PATS (Pets & Aquatics Trade Show) today. Launched in 2009, PATS is the UK’s trade Show for the pets and aquatics trade and sees thousands of brands launch new products and do business over the three-day event. The existing PATS team will work closely with Raccoon Media Group, combining resources and expertise to enhance and evolve the PATS brand and experience for both exhibitors and attendees. Gordon Thomas, Director of PATS, will continue in his role, working alongside Nicole Cooper, CEO of Raccoon Media Group’s Animal Health Division, to build on PATS’ strong foundations and drive the show to new heights.

Commenting on the acquisition Gordon Thomas, Director of PATS, shared his optimism: “Joining Raccoon Media Group is a fantastic opportunity for the PATS brand and our team. Raccoon’s commitment to our industry, alongside their expertise in running successful trade shows, means we’ll be able to take PATS to the next level. I look forward to working alongside Nicole and the broader Raccoon team as we embark on this exciting journey together.”

The second acquisition is BETA International which will see the Raccoon team deliver its first event in September 2025 when the team will bring the event to the NEC, Birmingham. BETA International, established by the trade association whose name it bears over 40 years ago, is the UK’s leading equestrian and country trade fair with visitors and exhibitors from over 25 countries. This acquisition strengthens Raccoon’s position within the Equestrian market, serving both the B2B and B2C audience in the UK. Speaking of the acquisition Claire Williams, Executive Director at BETA commented: “The integration of BETA International into the new Animal Health Division will enable it to continue to develop whilst attracting both new visitors and exhibitors when it returns to the NEC. We are looking forward to working alongside Nicole and her team to grow BETA International in the future”.

The formation of the Animal Health Division is a strategic step for Raccoon Media Group, underscoring its commitment to expanding its influence in serving passion-led communities with deep-rooted interests. The National Equine Show, a key component of the new division, was launched three years ago and has grown in popularity and profitability during this time, and with the new acquisitions, the division will deliver even more value to professionals, enthusiasts, and businesses within the animal health ecosystem.

Mike Seaman, CEO of Raccoon Media Group, commented on this latest development: “Our vision for rapid growth continues, but we’re deeply committed to staying true to the sectors that serve passion-led communities. The new Animal Health Division, under Nicole’s leadership, will allow us to expand our influence while continuing to provide meaningful experiences and services to the people and industries we care about. Nicole’s track record, industry knowledge, and enthusiasm for creating impactful events make her the perfect fit for this exciting new chapter.”

Nicole Cooper added: "I am thrilled to take on the role of CEO at such a pivotal moment for the Animal Health Division. The acquisition of PATS and BETA International represents a tremendous opportunity to expand our influence and innovation in the pet care and animal health sectors. These leading platforms align with our mission to support the welfare of animals and bring together key stakeholders to drive advancements in the industry. I look forward to working with our talented teams to maximize the potential of these acquisitions and continue to shape the future of animal health."

Raccoon Media Group is known for its dedication to creating impactful events that engage communities, and this latest development marks another milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy.

Jollyes strengthens leadership team with new hires

Award-winning pet retailer Jollyes has strengthened its executive team with a number of talented leaders from some of Britain’s leading retailers...

Award-winning pet retailer Jollyes has strengthened its executive team with a number of talented leaders from some of Britain’s leading retailers.

This comes weeks after Jollyes launched its first dedicated recruitment and careers website, as it prepares for significant new store growth. The site has already generated over 7,000 applications in its first few weeks.

The Board has been strengthened with two new hires who will work closely with chief executive officer Joe Wykes, underscoring the fast-growing retailer’s ambitions.

Adam Dury will join Jollyes as its new chief operating officer in January. For the past five years Adam has been chief commercial officer at Card Factory plc and a key member of its group operating board. Prior to Card Factory, Adam worked in commercial roles at Tesco and Marks and Spencer.

Adam will join chief executive Joe Wykes and chairman Andy Bond on a strengthened main board alongside its recently appointed chief financial officer Richard Willan.

Richard joined Jollyes in May 2024 after finance director roles at Coca Cola and Whitbread and other finance, commercial and strategy roles at Sainsbury’s, Argos and McKinsey.

Jollyes is also strengthening its senior leadership team with three key hires.

The first is its new trading director Anne Galloway who joins Jollyes after a 20-plus year career in buying and merchandising roles at Tesco. During her time at Tesco, Anne led the home category commercial teams which included pet care, as well as roles looking after toys, celebrations, home electrical, hardware and F&F clothing categories.

Matt Johnston also joins Jollyes this month as its chief technology officer. Matt joins from Sainsbury’s where he was head of data science, driving value from data both in Sainsbury’s and Argos.

Finally, later this year Katherine Paterson will join Jollyes next month as its new chief marketing officer. Katherine is heading for Jollyes after 12 years as customer director at Hobbycraft and senior marketing and e-commerce roles at B&Q/Kingfisher, Asda and Mars.

Continued store expansion

Last month Jollyes launched a new store at Monks Cross Shopping Park in York – the latest opening that has seen it grow its store estate by 50 % in just three years.

There are three further openings, in East Kilbride, Leyland and Cardiff, planned for November, and Jollyes expects the pace of stores openings to continue to accelerate in 2025.

New careers website

Jollyes also recently unveiled a revamped careers website that has generated over 7,000 applications in its first few weeks. The site at https://careers.jollyes.co.uk/ will be the go-to place for those looking to find a dream job looking after the nation’s pets, as Jollyes works hard to become one of the best employers in retail.

In the last 18 months it has already introduced a package of benefits for its 1,200-plus colleagues nationwide, including birthday leave, a ‘pet-eternity’ day for colleagues getting a new pet in the family, a week off on full pay for all colleagues when they get married, enhanced maternity and paternity leave and an enhanced 20 per cent discount off all Jollyes services.

Joe Wykes, Jollyes chief executive officer, said: “It’s a measure of the progress we’ve made that we’re now able to attract some of the best talent in British retailing to join our team.

“And while we’ve had a tremendous couple of years, continuing to fulfil our ambitious growth plans will depend on us hiring, nurturing, and supporting people who can build great careers at Jollyes.

“We’re determined to be first in line as great people look for great roles, whether that’s in the boardroom or on the shopfloor.

“I’d like to welcome my new colleagues to the business as we continue our exciting journey serving pet parents across the UK.”

Jollyes has had a remarkable 2024 winning new investment to supercharge its growth, being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for retailers under £250m turnover and making the Sunday Times’ list for the first time as one of Britain’s best big companies to work for.

Made with natural ingredients, the Mince Pie Festive Treats and Turkey & Cranberry Festive Treats are grain free making them ideal for sensitive tummies. 70g RRP £4.00.

Craig Wallace, MD, Wilsons Pet Food, said: “We’ve been planning an increased range of natural treats for a while, but it made sense to wait until the full rebrand, ensuring all products would benefit from the new packaging and launch at a similar time. We’re pleased to offer such a diverse selection and for pet owners to feel assured that the treats are natural and nutritious.

“We’re particularly proud of the Wee Salmon Crunchies. We’ve been working with an innovative organisation in Scotland to support an ambition of zero waste across the Scottish fishing industry.  These tiny salmon are too small to be used in freshwater hatcheries and usually result in waste, so it’s great to be part of an initiative to repurpose these small fish and for dogs to reap the health benefits.”

Dog trainer's crowdfunding appeal to help therapy dog

A crowdfunding appeal has been set up for a dog trainer whose pet broke her neck in a terrifying accident on Sunday night...

A crowdfunding appeal has been set up for a dog trainer whose pet broke her neck in a terrifying accident on Sunday night.

Jo Sellers, 54, from Surrey, found her beloved dog Reba, nine, collapsed after letting her out in the garden - and it was thanks to her having first aid training that she’s still alive.

Pets as Therapy dog Reba had broken her neck and was operated on by TV supervet Noel Fitzpatrick on Monday night - and Jo hopes she will make a full recovery.

However, her insurance will only cover £5,500, and the cost of Reba’s surgery alone is £15,000 - meaning Jo, who runs Pippin Pets Dog Training, faces a bill of £9,500 so far.

Jo said: “It was terrifying, seeing her lay there unable to move. I’ve had first aid training so I gently lifted her and took her to the car to the emergency vets. I was so scared - I just kept saying, ‘I love you, hang on,’ over and over.

“The vets ran tests and tried to get Reba to stand, but she couldn’t, so they called to see if a referral centre could see her – and I took her to Fitzpatrick’s the following morning.

“I watched as they carried her in on a spinal board, and after scanning her and finding she had broken part of her vertebra and two discs were out of line, the team arranged for Noel to operate on her on Monday night.”

Noel has shared videos of Reba, a Bichon Frise-Cocker Spaniel cross, on his Instagram account this week and explained how he used metal implants and cement on her spinal fracture – and talked about the importance of being willing to change your plans to help others.

He told his 370,000 followers: “What you have to do is put good out into the world and then wait and see what the effect is.

“You're not going to see the effect immediately - this is another little metaphor here in Reba’s situation. Put out good in the world to a stranger that you don't know, or to someone you do know - put it out there.

“You’ve got to wait and see what the effect is. Don't expect the effect straight away. Most good things take time, and now, thankfully, we do have time, so I'll keep you posted.”

Jo will need to make adaptations to her home as Reba recovers - and is asking anyone with spare dog beds or exercise pens in the Surrey area to contact her.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by her friend Zoe Willingham, where Jo’s friends, colleagues, and clients have kindly donated over £2,000.

Zoe said: “What has happened to Reba is every dog owner’s worst nightmare. Jo is single and doesn’t have a second income - and the dog community has rallied round to support her.”

Jo added: “All the messages have been brilliant because I’ve not felt alone. It can be very isolating because I live on my own and Reba is my world - so I have been so moved by so many people wanting to help.”

A new to market gourmet dog treat brand, Ruffingtons, is launching online and to stockists this month from the UK's leading farm to bowl pet food manufacturer, Fold Hill

With a portfolio of clients already secured for the brand, Fold Hill is utilising its extensive knowledge of the industry to fill a gap in the market and introduce luxury giving to the pet sector. Ruffingtons joins the Fold Hill family based on research that a growing number of dog owners are wanting to show their beloved pets love through treats and presents.

Featuring a range of ‘edible art’ style treats such as marble snaps and truffles, Ruffingtons was born out of ‘humanising pets and the acknowledgment that sometimes words just aren’t enough to express how much consumers love their dog.

With around 57% of households owning a pet, and the pet food sector being worth £7.2bn annually, there is a clear space in the market for luxury pet gifting.

The product range includes a total of 7 SKUs, featuring:

  • Marble Snaps (RRP £7.00)
  • Terrier Truffles (RRP £7.00)
  • 4-pack Cupcakes (RRP £4.00)
  • 9-pack Cupcakes (RRP £7.00)
  • Dog Doughnuts (RRP £5.00)
  • Biscuit Paws (RRP £5.00)
  • Dog Eclairs (RRP £5.00)

The company has ambitious goals of providing over 10 million dogs with a unique gifting experience. It is currently available for consumer to purchase via the website, but plans to secure in-store and foodservice listings are underway.

Ben Mankertz, Managing Director at Ruffingtons, said: “We have invested heavily into launching the Ruffingtons brand as we know that, over the past few years, the desire to treat and spend money on pets amongst users has risen exponentially. There is a gap in the market for artisan baked treats available at POS in cafes, dog-friendly restaurants and so on. We hope Ruffingtons will bridge it.

“A lot of time has been spent with the Ruffingtons team from identifying our core consumers, right through to finalising our packaging and how the brand looks when it is presented by stockists. Everything has to feel special, with the golden thread of luxury running throughout.

We’re excited to see how Ruffingtons performs as we head into the key gifting period of the year – and how it is received by our stockists and consumers thereafter as the brand continues to grow.”

The brand debuted its range at the Pet and Aquatics Trade Show (PATS).

Ruffingtons is hand crafted in rural Lincolnshire by Fold Hill which already operates several high-performing brands, as well as offering a white labelling service.

Ruffingtons is set to be available in several stockists across the UK and online. Potential stockists including retail stores, delis, pet shops, garden centres, cafes, pubs, and dog-friendly restaurants are urged to get in touch with the team regarding becoming a partner at info@ruffingtons.co.uk.

Report to help veterinary profession be more sustainable

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and Vet Sustain have published a new report that aims to empower the profession to play its role in tackling climate change and support the UK’s aim to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025...

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) and Vet Sustain have published a new report that aims to empower the profession to play its role in tackling climate change and support the UK’s aim to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

There are many compelling ethical, business and One Health reasons for veterinary workplaces to consider taking action against climate change but, with busy day-to-day workloads and competing priorities, it can feel daunting to get started. Net zero: The role of veterinary workplaces in tackling climate change aims to break down the challenge of working towards net zero emissions, with actions that individuals and teams can take, whether they are just getting started or are further along in their sustainability journey.

The report explains the impact of climate change, what the veterinary profession’s role is in tackling it and why it is so important veterinary professions step up to play their part. A special guide “Four steps to net zero”provides practical steps on how to take positive action towards mitigating their workplaces impact on the environment.

The four steps:

  1. Pledge your commitment to environmental sustainability: making a formal pledge or even just telling others of your intentions, such as pledging to reduce carbon emissions in the workplace, can help to increase the level of commitment.
  2. Plan how to reduce emissions to zero: calculate the carbon emissions at your workplace, perhaps by using the Veterinary Carbon Calculator to help come up with a plan of action.
  3. Proceed with immediate actions to reduce emissions: common ways teams or individuals can have an impact are from switching to green energy providers to performing waste audits to ensure waste is being correctly disposed of or recycled.
  4. Publish your successes to monitor progress and inspire others: this could be as simple as updating teams of progress, reporting improvements publicly or signing up to an accreditation scheme to demonstrate progress and commitment, such as the Investors in the Environment (iiE) scheme.

The report also includes useful resources and showcases the ways real veterinary workplaces are taking action to reduce their impact on the environment. BVA is leading by example, taking steps to cut its carbon emissions and has retained its iiE ‘Green’ level for the third year running for sustainability performance.

British Veterinary Association Senior Vice President Anna Judson said: “Many veterinary professionals have long been concerned about the impact the sector is having on the environment, and many are already taking action to mitigate this. However, there is still more work to do. Our vision is that by 2050 the profession will have adapted to support the UK’s net zero targets; is trusted on mitigating its own carbon footprint; and is a leading advocate for environmental sustainability. This new report is providing vet teams with the tools and the inspiration to do their bit, because small changes add-up to make a big difference.”

Vet Sustain Chair Ed Bailey said: “Vet Sustain’s mission is to enable and inspire veterinary professionals to continually improve the health and wellbeing of animals, people and the environment. As veterinary professionals, we are privileged to be at the nexus of science, people, animals and an understanding of behavioural change. This position represents a tremendous opportunity to become sustainability changemakers in a way that is personally and professionally fulfilling. I hope this report empowers us to act as leaders towards this more hopeful future.”

Join the conversation on the veterinary profession’s role in tackling climate change at this year’s BVA Congress, held at London Vet Show from 14 – 15 November. The session Practice what you preach: Reaching net zero is a team effort will be held at 10.45am - 11.45am on 14 November in the BVA Congress Theatre with Chair Anna Judson, BVA’s Senior Vice President and panellists Ed Bailey, Clinical Director and Sustainability Lead at George Farm Vets, Laura Binnie, Sustainability Lead at Paragon Veterinary Group and James Bevan, Planetary Health Senior Teaching Fellow Public Health Registrar, University of Southampton.

Petcetera to distribute the award-winning Dog G8 Gate

Father and son, Peter and Chris Maxted from Horsham who last year appeared on BBC One’s Dragons’ Den and received a £50K investment offer from Dragon, Deborah Meaden for their company which manufactures retractable, portable gates that are designed to fit almost any configuration, notably the front door to prevent dog escapes and dog attacks, have received a listing and distribution deal with leading wholesaler, Petcetera,

The Dog G8 Company reached the 10,000 orders target on Shopify earlier on this year. Last year they also achieved Silver for Innovation at the annual PetQuip Awards for their portable gates.

The Dog-G8 gate was the inspiration of Peter Maxted, the founder of the company who has been a pet sitter for over 20 years and a dog owner for the same amount of time. He was very aware of the risks associated with dogs at front doors e.g. escapes, attacks, thefts and although there were other gates on the market, he felt they were inadequate and ineffective enough to work for all breeds. He therefore decided to design and sell his own version so he could keep his and client’s dogs safer at the front door. Peter’s son Chris is also a director in the business and has been working alongside Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership and the University of Liverpool to raise awareness of dog attacks and their impact on delivery workers.

The Dog-G8 product is British made and features a concertina, modular and retractable design. The product is incredibly versatile and can be used on multiple configurations ranging from the front door to stairways, hallways, motorhomes and more. The gates modular design enables it to be spanned to any width, allowing the gate to be fitted to the widest of configurations such as patio doors where standard, conventional gates cannot fit.

The gate is made from mild steel, coated in chrome or white powder coat, bolted together with bespoke, customised clips which give the gate strength and durability.

When the gate is not in use it sits flat and compact to one side it’s neat, unobtrusive, and out of the way. Finally, it is removable, enabling it to be easily stored away or docked to other configurations (if extra brackets are purchased).

The Dog-G8 can also be used in horse boxes, motorhomes and caravans. When the gate is spanned across the entrance, this allows any motorhome or caravan user to have their habitation door open, without the risk of their dog dashing out. The gate will provide dogs with much needed ventilation and offers great visibility.

The gate is excellent for when you’re parked up at campsites or beaches where perimeters cannot be formed but you wish to have the door open.

Since launch the company has seen massive growth and now sells directly to customers in the UK, Canada, United States, and Europe. The product went viral on Tiktok and Facebook attracting over 100 million organic views. The Dog-G8 Company was the Theo Paphitis' Small Business Sunday Winner in March 2021 and in 2023 won the Silver Award at the PetQuip Awards for Innovation.

Since their appearance on Dragons’ Den, The Dog-G8 Company has brought out new variants of their products including a taller version of the gate alongside offering customers a range of new colours.

Petcetera are initially distributing the portable gate for the front door but have plans to expand the range in due course.

Commenting on their listing, Peter Maxted said: “We are delighted to be working alongside such a prestigious wholesaler as  Petcetera who have many years’ experience supplying quality products to the best in the showing, breeding and grooming sectors.”

Budget delivers triple blow to independent retailers, says Bira

The British Independent Retailers Association has condemned the Budget as the most damaging for independent retailers in recent memory, with a triple blow of doubled business rates, increased National Insurance, and higher minimum wage costs threatening widespread high street closures...

The British Independent Retailers Association has condemned the Budget as the most damaging for independent retailers in recent memory, with a triple blow of doubled business rates, increased National Insurance, and higher minimum wage costs threatening widespread high street closures.

Bira, representing over 6,000 independent retailers across the UK, reports the reduction in business rates relief from 75% to 40% (capped at £110k) from April 2025 will more than double costs for many retailers.

This comes alongside employer National Insurance contributions rising from 13.8% to 15%, with the earnings threshold slashed from £9,100 to £5,000, and the minimum wage increasing to £12.21 per hour for over-21s.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: "This is without doubt the worst Budget for independent retailers I have seen in my time representing the sector. The government's actions today show complete disregard for the thousands of hard-working shop owners who form the backbone of our high streets.

"Small retailers, who have already endured years of challenging trading conditions, now face a perfect storm of crippling cost increases. Their business rates will more than double as relief drops from 75% to 40%, while they're hit simultaneously with employer National Insurance rising to 15% and a lower threshold of £5,000, down from £9,100. Add to this the minimum wage increase to £12.21, and many of our members are telling us they simply cannot survive this onslaught.

"One member has already calculated these changes will increase their cost base by £150,000 next year alone," he said.

Mr Goodacre added: "For all the government's rhetoric about supporting small businesses and revitalising high streets, their actions do precisely the opposite. These punishing measures will force many shop owners to make heart-breaking decisions about their businesses' future.

"What makes this particularly bitter is that these are family businesses, often built up over generations, run by people who work incredibly long hours to serve their communities. They're now being asked to shoulder an impossible burden while trying to compete with online giants who face none of these cost pressures.

"This is clearly an anti-high street Budget. I can only assume that the government is happy for working people to shop online and buy cheap imports. This government has shown complete disregard for the local businesses that create jobs and maintain vibrant communities," he said.

A recent survey released by Bira showed that 46% of retailers reported worse trading in early 2024 compared to 2023, with 42.6% expressing low confidence for Q2 2024.

Mr Goodacre said: "This Budget betrays every independent retailer who has fought to keep their business alive through recent challenges. It's not just disappointing - it's potentially catastrophic for Britain's high streets."

BVA Young Vet of the Year 2024 finalists announced

Three young vets are in the running to be named the British Veterinary Association’s (BVA) Young Vet of the Year for 2024...

Three young vets are in the running to be named the British Veterinary Association’s (BVA) Young Vet of the Year for 2024.

Clio Rudgard-Redsell, David Charles and Rose Thompson-Turcotte are through to the final stages of this year’s prestigious award, which is sponsored by Zoetis and celebrates inspirational vets in the first stages of their professional career.

The award judging panel – BVA President Liz Mullineaux, Linda Belton, RCVS President and director of the George Veterinary Group, Colin Penny, Medical Affairs Manager for Ruminant POM V at Zoetis, and last year’s Young Vet of the Year Dr. Henry Lamb – shortlisted the finalists for the award based on their outstanding career achievements so far. This includes their hard work supporting their clients and colleagues; providing outstanding and consistent high levels of care for their patients; giving back to their community; championing causes in the veterinary profession; or going the extra mile.

BVA’s Young Vet of the Year Finalists 2024

Dr. Clio Rudgard-Redsell MRCVS

Vet Clio Rudgard-Redsell is nominated for her commitment, compassion and willingness to learn new skills and to go above and beyond for her patients and team members. Having graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2022 and starting her career at Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Leicestershire, she moved on to become part of the founding vet team at Creature Comforts in Notting Hill, London, where she is helped set up its first clinic and establish practice protocols that have been successfully rolled out to later clinics. She is incredibly passionate about marine animals and is also a volunteer vet for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), where she aids dolphin and seal rescues.

Clio said: “I am deeply honoured to be nominated for this award, let alone shortlisted. It is a privilege to be a representative for young people in our profession - I hope to live up to everything this award stands for and be a champion for this incredible industry. I wouldn’t be in this position without the amazing support from my peers and colleagues both at Creature Comforts and at Chine House Veterinary Hospital, where I could not have asked for a better foundation to start my career. Looking to the future, I hope I can be a positive example to aspiring vets while continuing to develop my business and leadership skills.”

Dr. David Charles MRCVS
Vet David Charles is nominated for his enthusiasm, commitment and his resilience. A 2019 Bristol University graduate, David worked in mixed practice before joining Scarsdale Vets’ farm animal team in early 2020 where he developed a passion for small ruminant work & completed his CertAVP(Sheep). He went on to relaunch the ‘flock health club’ and secured funding for new advanced breeding services to support sheep farms across the Midlands. After being seriously injured in a car accident, he was forced to step down from clinical work but set up his veterinary consultancy, offering CPD training for vets and students working with The Webinar Vet and Vet Times. This year, he joined NoBACZ Healthcare as their International Business Development Manager, helping them bring their innovative and sustainable products into the livestock health markets globally. He continues to offer sheep advisory services to farmers and teach students, and recently supported APHA as an OV during the current BTV-3 outbreak.

David said: “It’s an enormous honour to have been nominated for this award, and I would never have dreamed that I would make the final three – it’s incredibly humbling. Whilst I very much still enjoy getting on farm and talking to farmers and working with their animals, my experiences throughout the last five and a half years have really shown how many doors the MRCVS qualification can open, and varied our careers can be.”

Dr. Rose Thompson-Turcotte MRCVS

Small animal vet Rose Thompson-Turcotte has worked at the Bury St Edmunds Veterinary Centre (BSEVC) since graduating from the University of Surrey in 2023. She has been nominated for her excellent clinical skills and dedication to her profession, patients and their owners. As well as spending her spare time volunteering for her local RSPCA centre, she always goes the extra mile to look after not just her patients – but also their owners, in particular over 75s; making sure that they have the support they need when making tough decisions in the hospital setting or with chronic health concerns in their pets.

She said: “I am so honoured to have been short-listed for this award but am even more delighted to have the backing of my wonderful colleagues. I am so lucky to work at a practice that encourages community engagement and compassionate, evidence-based medicine. My main interest is inpatient care - I love medical puzzles and developing strong bonds with clients and patients. There isn’t much special about the way I practise vet medicine, but I genuinely feel unbridled joy to be able to call myself a veterinary surgeon, and I am lucky to have been raised by kind, enthusiastic and knowledgeable vets at the RSPCA and BSEVC.”

On behalf of the judges, BVA President Liz Mullineaux said: “This year has brought us our highest number of BVA Young Vet of the Year nominations yet, with each singing the praises of incredible young vets from around the UK. Rose, Clio and David stood out: they all have their unique passions and causes but their dedication, commitment and compassion shines through. Congratulations on being named finalists in this year’s award, it really is an amazing achievement and you should be so proud of yourselves already. We look forward to following your future careers.”

The winner of BVA Young Vet of the Year will be announced on 14 November at the BVA's Awards dinner, which takes place during London Vet Show. They will receive a prize package which includes £1,000, a year’s free BVA membership, a mentoring/engagement opportunity with sponsor Zoetis and career development opportunities.

Pet food firm secures £15m investment to fund future growth

Pure Pet Food, which provides personalised dog food delivered to customers’ doors, has completed a major £15m investment round led by Felix Capital and including Mercia Ventures.

The latest investment will support the further expansion of the Yorkshire-based business following a period of rapid growth.

Pure Pet Food was founded in 2013 by childhood friends Daniel Valdur Eha and Mathew Cockroft with a £300 loan. Their ambition was to revolutionise the ambient pet food market by creating an alternative to traditional kibble, through the manufacture and marketing of natural, healthy and easily digestible food for dogs. With UK dog ownership continuing to grow and more pet owners aware of and searching for the benefits of healthy meals, Pure’s founding mission is as relevant as ever.

The business now employs over 100 team members at its manufacturing site and offices in Cleckheaton and serves 40,000 regular customers throughout the UK, who pay a monthly subscription and receive regular deliveries of pet food tailored to their dog’s needs. Since 2013 Pure has served over 42 million meals to dogs all around the country. Pure Pet Food’s sales have grown by over 200% in the last two years to a run rate of £25million, capitalising on the premiumisation of the pet care industry. The company appointed new CEO Roz Cuschieri in April 2023, who has previously held board roles at Warburtons and Genius Food, to work alongside the founders.

This growth encouraged the business to seek additional external investment to fuel further expansion both in the UK and new markets, as well as develop its distribution channels and product categories.

The European pet food market is the second largest globally just behind the U.S. at c.$55b (£42b) 2024 growing at c. 7.5% CAGR to reach $79b (£61b) by 2029. The global e-com pet care market is projected to grow at c.11% CAGR over the next decade.

Felix Capital, the modern lifestyle-focused venture capital firm, investors in the likes of Castore, Moonbug, Deliveroo, Oatly, Papier, Mejuri and Manual, has led a £15m investment round alongside participation from existing investor Mercia Ventures.

Mat Cockroft, co-founder of Pure Pet Food, said: "We are thrilled to partner with Felix Capital, whose team have demonstrated exceptional support and collaboration. Having one of Europe’s leading consumer investors involved in the business marks a significant milestone for us, and we are excited to shape the future of Pure together.

“We are also delighted for the ongoing support from our current investors and team, who believe in our mission and sector. Dan and I have come a long way from starting Pure. Our ambitions have grown alongside the business, and we are eager to continue in our quest to create food that makes a profound impact on the health and happiness of our dogs."

Antoine Nussenbaum, Co-Founder and Investor at Felix Capital, said: “We will always remember the first visit to Pure’s offices. We witnessed everything we like to see in an entrepreneurial journey. The longstanding relentless drive from Mat and Dan, combined with Roz’s amazing experience in consumer-packaged goods is a true recipe for success. In a world where people opt more and more for pethood over parenthood, we are humbled and excited to join this journey alongside Jan at Mercia, as well as Miles Hill and Sarah Doyle from Pure. We will be supporting the whole team at Pure with their mission to become a leading, high-quality, sustainable, and distinctive modern brand for pets.”

Jan Oosthuizen, Investor at Mercia Ventures, said: “Pure has gone from strength to strength in recent years, a testament to the dedication and hard work of Dan, Mat, Roz and the team. The company’s vision and ambition consistently excite us, so we are delighted to continue to support them in their pursuit of future milestones and to partner with Antoine and the wider Felix team.”

Pure Pet food Ltd were advised by Womble Bond Dickinson and BHP LLP. Mercia Ventures were advised by Muckle LLP and Philip Hare & Associates. Felix Capital were advised by Latham and Watkins, and Mazars LLP.

The board will now comprise of:

  • Miles Hill – Chairman
  • Roz Cuschieri – CEO
  • Dan Valdur Eha – Co-Founder and COO
  • Mat Cockroft – Co-Founder and CGO
  • Jan Oosthuizen – Investment Director, Mercia Ventures
  • Antoine Nussenbaum – Co-Founder and Investor, Felix Capital
  • Sarah Doyle – Non-Exec Director

Pet food producer secures listings with Europe’s biggest online pet retailer

Independent Yorkshire-based Burgess Pet Care is to have its Burgess Excel range stocked by Zooplus in Germany, a move that also gives it access to other European markets...

Independent Yorkshire-based Burgess Pet Care is to have its Burgess Excel range stocked by Zooplus in Germany, a move that also gives it access to other European markets.

A total of 13 lines will be available, covering the Excel feeding plan that has been developed with vets and nutritionists to meet the specific life stage and lifestyle needs of rabbits and guinea pigs.

A range of rabbit and guinea pig nuggets will be sold, including the groundbreaking Indoor Rabbit and Indoor Guinea pig nuggets, along with treats and hay.

Mark Womersley, Managing Director at Burgess Pet Care, said: “We’re delighted to secure this listing, further opening up major international markets for us. To be able to share the expertise that we have developed in small animal nutrition over decades of research and development will help pet owners do the very best for their animals, and hopefully transform the way these pets are fed as we have done in the UK.”

The range being carried by Zooplus caters for key life stages, with recipes for adult, mature, junior and dwarf species, as well as adapted lines for indoor rabbits and guinea pigs. Also included are two of the UK’s leading feeding hay products and grass-based baked treats. Burgess Excel is recommended by 92 per cent of British vets, a factor it is hoped will resonate in Germany, a country with one of the biggest small animal populations in Europe.

Burgess, which can be traced back to the 17th century as a milling business and now has almost 60 years of pet food production to its name, is behind Rabbit and Guinea Pig Awareness Weeks in the UK, as well as the inaugural Guinea Pig Welfare Forum, held in Birmingham recently. Research supported by Burgess showed that feeding muesli-style diets to rabbits can increase the risk of serious health conditions. As a result of this research Burgess is a muesli free company who believe that any species will selectively feed if given the opportunity.

While 85% to 90% of rabbits’ and guinea pigs’ diet should be quality feeding hay or fresh grass, Burgess Excel nuggets are specially formulated to provide the essential vitamins and minerals required, alongside specific functional ingredients depending on the animals’ needs.
