Private equity firm acquires UK petcare business

Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners has acquired Assisi Pet Care Group., whose brands include Pet Munchies, Hollings and HiLife....

Assisi Pet Care recently showcased its brands at PATS Telford.

Chicago-based private equity firm Wind Point Partners has acquired Assisi Pet Care Group., whose brands include Pet Munchies, Hollings and HiLife.

Melton Mowbray-based Assisi’s products are sold in the UK and throughout Europe, with two natural treat production facilities located in Poland.

Assisi was founded in 2020 as a platform to acquire, integrate and grow leading pet food and treat companies with established reputations and strong potential.

Wind Point is partnering with Assisi management, led by founder and CEO Peter Mangion.

Under Mangion’s leadership, Assisi has grown significantly through the implementation of organic growth initiatives and the completion of four acquisitions that expanded the Company’s product capabilities and geographic reach.

Assisi represents the second partnership between Wind Point and Mangion, who previously served as CEO of a Wind Point investment in the pest control industry.

Peter Mangion said: "I am delighted to be partnering with Wind Point Partners to take Assisi Pet Care into the next phase of its development. My sincere thanks to Harwood Private Equity for backing Assisi from its inception, just three years ago, and for supporting its rapid growth through four acquisition transactions.

"I am very much looking forward to working with the team at Wind Point again and repeating the success we shared in a previous relationship. In Wind Point and Harwood, I am very fortunate to have worked with two fantastic private equity backers, across two very different categories, and to have enjoyed great success with both.

"Huge thanks to the Assisi team for making this happen, especially Steve Woodhams without whom this deal would not have been possible. The future is very bright for Assisi Pet Care."

He added: “Assisi has been on a tremendous journey since its inception in 2020, which is a testament to the strength and quality of our people, our customer and supplier relationships and the rich heritage of our brands and products,”

"Wind Point and I have worked closely together for numerous years. Our shared focus on investing in our people and expanding our capabilities makes them the ideal partner for Assisi.”

Adam Jump, Vice President at Wind Point, noted: “Assisi is a rapidly growing platform with significant opportunity in the dynamic European pet care industry. Peter and the Assisi management team have built an outstanding business that sits at an exciting inflection point. We look forward to supporting the Assisi team as they continue to build a differentiated pet foods and treats platform.”

Wind Point is a longtime investor in the pet and animal nutrition industry, with select prior and current investments including Targeted PetCare, FoodScience, Petmate and Pestell Nutrition.

Paul Peterson, Wind Point Managing Director, commented: “Assisi operates in attractive markets and is well-positioned through its focus on premium and natural pet foods and treats. Wind Point’s long-term experience in pet positions us well to support Peter and the team in the Company’s next phase of growth.”

Wind Point evaluated Assisi in partnership with a team of seasoned executive advisors who possess deep experience across the pet industry. John Howe, a member of Wind Point’s Executive Advisor Partner (“EAP”) program, will serve as Board Chair. Mr. Howe is the former CEO of Compana Pet Brands, a global provider of pet care and nutrition products, and a Board Director at Nivel and New World Natural Brands. Lora Van Velsor, the former Chief Marketing Officer at Compana Pet Brands, will also join Assisi’s Board as Non-Executive Director.

Reed Smith LLP served as legal counsel to Wind Point and KPMG LLP provided transaction advisory services in connection with the transaction.

Retailer thrives as supplier of own-branded products

From a family-run pet store launched six years ago, HugglePets has grown rapidly into a thriving company that now supplies its own-branded products. Director Mike Dixon reveals how the Wolverhampton-based company is developing.

When did the business launch as a bricks-and-mortar store?

HugglePets opened its doors to the public in April of 2017. The store was initially more like your average pet store, but since then has seen a variety of developments to make every visit to HugglePets a truly memorable one for pet lovers, such as the Sensory Aquarium, the Exo Terra Reptile Room and the Pond & Wildlife Education Centre.

Who owns the business?

The business is family-owned and managed by father and son duo Ian and Mike Dixon. My sister, Hannah Dixon, is the Community Projects Manager of HugglePets in the Community – the non-profit, animal therapy side of the organisation. This close-knit approach is how we like to operate as in our purview, everyone wearing a purple HugglePets polo matters to what we do.

How many people are employed?

There are currently 25 people employed at HugglePets, and we’re immensely proud of our team and all that they bring to the organisation on a daily basis. With teams split between the shop, warehouse and offices, there’s always lots to do but we’re never unimpressed with how it’s done. And we’ve recently recruited two pet trade veterans in Tom Gwilliam and Frances Marshall (pictured below), who with 33 combined years of industry experience between them are certain to bring something epic to the roster here at HugglePets.

Are you moving away from the retail side of the business?

The bricks-and-mortar element is not something we're doing away with anytime soon. As much as we’re excited to grow across the whole of the United Kingdom, we love having a foothold in the Wolverhampton community as it allows us to connect with pet owners on a regular basis and really get to know both them and their pets. Losing that element would go against our very philosophy of caring for each and every pet like they're a member of the HugglePets family.

Is HugglePets becoming a pet product supplier as well as being a retailer?

Funnily enough, we actually started as a wholesaler of dog crates over 10 years ago before selling to the general public, and as we expand on our new upcoming branded dog range, this is something we're happy to build on and wholesale to even more companies. Getting to launch quality pet products with the HugglePets name on it is a privilege, and having other stores stock these on their shelves is a great bonus.

Do you supply own-branded products?

Our range of HugglePets products is something we're very proud of. After all the positive feedback we received following the launch of the HugglePets Fabric Crate Foldable Pet Carriers, we knew that it would be worthwhile to expand on this and start developing even more things that we know pet owners are in constant need of - like dog collars, harnesses, pet beds, etc. Developing these new ranges has taught us a lot as sellers about the level of care and ingenuity it takes to make a truly great product, and we're excited to roll out this next range in the coming weeks.

Tell us about being a Community Interest Company and what it involves.

As previously mentioned, HugglePets in the Community is the non-profit side of the organisation that uses animal therapy to connect with people from the community. In doing so, the goal is to improve their mental health, combat loneliness, challenge behavioural issues and promote psychological wellbeing. Since its inception in May of 2018, the CIC has helped thousands of people in need, even if just with something small like a cuddle with a rabbit and a cup of tea with one of our fully trained therapists. And proceeds from the retail side of the business go directly to this vital work, so every time someone buys from us, they're helping to make that difference. We were even fortunate enough to be visited by the Prince and Princess of Wales in May of 2021, who sat in on an animal therapy session of ours as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

How excited are you about how the company is developing?

We're incredibly excited. The winter period is a hectic time for all retailers, but we're confident with the new dog range that we'll have a selection to really shine a spotlight on and give dog owners a new lease on life (or a new lead on life). HugglePets has been steadily growing in both size and splendour for the past couple of years, and we're taking the lessons we've learnt so far and applying them to whole new challenges.

Record volume sales increases of Zero In Home Flea Killers have followed the warmest early-Autumn weather on record and a surge in domestic infestations of cat and dog fleas.

Sales of Zero In Home Flea Killer are up by over 300% year on year and STV are encouraging retail partners to stay fully stocked, even as mild weather gives way to cold over the coming weeks.

“As the UK switches its central heating on, we will see an even stronger surge in flea infestations around the home,” says STV, warning that fleas spend 95% of their life cycle living off dogs and cats, and are typically found in bedding, furniture, and carpets around the home.

The full Zero In Home Flea Killer range is featured in STV’s new-season Autumn/Winter catalogue, available on request or for download at stvuk.com, with attractive pre-season deals and offers now available from leading national wholesalers, including Decco, Stax, and Home Hardware.

Home Flea Killers are part of a range of speciality insect control products available under the Zero In brand, including bed bug, carpet beetle, clothes moth, and woodworm treatments. Zero In is the UK’s fastest growing insect control brand, now generating over £20 million of retail sales a year.

Purina Europe launches carbon-reduced pet food range

Purina Europe is announcing its first carbon reduced pet food range, Purina ONE DualNature. This carbon reduction work is a step towards Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030...

Purina Europe is announcing its first carbon reduced pet food range, Purina ONE DualNature. This carbon reduction work is a step towards Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

So far, the range has successfully reduced its carbon footprint by 15.7% compared to a 2019 baseline. The reduction has been based on a Life Cycle Assessment which measures the full environmental impact of products.

Purina ONE DualNature has reduced its impact by making changes to its manufacturing, recipes, logistics and packaging.  For example, by buying renewable electricity for factories where the range is made and selecting ingredients with the right nutrients and a lower carbon impact. The changes have been verified by South Pole, an external organisation which verifies the greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects and strategies of companies, in line with the most up-to-date climate science.

Adjustments have been made without compromising the nutritional value, quality and taste of Purina ONE DualNature.

Fabio Degli Esposti, Marketing Director at Purina Europe, said: “At Purina, we’re committed to producing healthy, nutritious pet food that you can trust. But that’s not all. We believe the health of our environment is as important as providing high quality pet food products.

“Purina ONE DualNature is the first Purina product range that has announced a reduction of its carbon footprint, but it’s just the beginning. Purina Europe is striving to contribute towards Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030.

“Our journey goes on and we’ll be working to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions over the coming time, so that pet owners can confidently choose products that contribute positively to both their pets and the environment.”

The range contains natural ingredients spirulina or cranberry and comes in a variety of meat and fish flavours. Spirulina is a natural ingredient known for its health benefits. Purina ONE DualNature Salmon with Spirulina is formulated to help support a cat's healthy immune function. Cranberries are well known in human food as healthful food due to their high nutrient and antioxidant content. Purina ONE Dual Nature Chicken with Cranberry, with added fish oil, helps support a cat’s healthy urinary tract.

Logistically, where the infrastructure exists, pet food products are transported between countries using multimodal transport - a combination of road and rail systems – to avoid only road transport.

Purina ONE DualNature has also moved to mono-material packaging, which can be recycled in stores in the UK and at kerbside in Ireland.  By 2025, Purina expects more than 95% of its packaging to be designed for recycling and will continue to work towards achieving 100%.

To support the circular economy, Purina Europe has prioritised reducing the use of virgin plastic in the packaging process for the range. Purina ONE DualNature’s bags have been made with 40% recycled plastic. The recycled material of the bags has been allocated using the ISCC certified mass balance approach.

Purina ONE DualNature provides high quality nutrition to support a cat’s health and will continue to work on carbon reduction actions, for a better today and tomorrow. The range is being launched in selected countries across Europe.

UK Pet Food introduces innovative dog obesity tool

In response to the alarming rise in pet obesity, UK Pet Food has launched an interactive and educational tool designed to empower dog owners with the knowledge and resources to combat this pressing issue.

The tool, developed in collaboration with renowned human psychologist Professor Thomas Webb from the University of Sheffield, aims to create healthier and happier lives for our canine companions.

The United Kingdom is currently facing a pet obesity crisis, with an estimated 50% of dogs considered as overweight or obese by vets. This growing concern not only affects the overall well-being of our beloved pets but also places additional stress on healthcare resources and incurs substantial costs for pet owners.

Recognizing the urgency of this situation, UK Pet Food partnered with Professor Thomas Webb, a leading expert in behaviour change, to devise an innovative solution. Together, they have created an engaging and informative tool that combines psychology with practical advice to help dog owners make informed decisions about their pets' nutrition.

The first part of this initiative is a quiz titled "Who's in charge when it comes to feeding your dog?" The quiz delves into the dynamics of feeding habits and offers dog owners insights into their roles in their pet's dietary regimen. After completing the quiz, participants are provided with a personalized help sheet tailored to their unique circumstances, enabling them to address challenging scenarios where overfeeding or overtreating their dogs may be a risk.

The tool incorporates Professor Thomas Webb's extensive knowledge in behaviour change to help dog owners:

  • Identify triggers that lead to overfeeding and overtreating.
  • Establish practical strategies to create healthier feeding routines.
  • Make informed choices when selecting pet food products.
  • Promote a balanced diet that meets their dog's nutritional needs

"We are committed to combating pet obesity and fostering a better understanding of the importance of a healthy diet for dogs," said Sarah Hormozi, Head of Science and Education at UK Pet Food. "Our collaboration with Professor Thomas Webb brings a fresh perspective to the problem, bridging the gap between human psychology and pet nutrition."

This new dog obesity tool, along with the range of existing body condition charts and other obesity resources, is poised to make an impact on improving the lives of pet dogs and strengthening the bond between pets and their owners.

For more information about UK Pet Food's dog obesity tool and to take the quiz, visit www.ukpetfood.org.

A Silicon Valley app for dogs and their owners is launching in the UK, and is looking for new users who are pet professionals.

The Doghood is a popular free community app in the States, and links dog owners with like-minded pet parents for meet ups, debates, doggy advice and local discussions.

This week the app started operating in the UK, and is looking to build communities of canine enthusiasts. The app is perfect for pet professionals including small businesses, groomers, dog walkers and pet sitters, as it allows users to post events and promote their services to potential customers in their local area.

Available to all iPhone users, the free app enables you to make a profile for your dog, and make posts about their antics. You can then also access dog-related topics, and share with other local people who use the app, making new friends for you and your dog.

Canine expert Anna Webb, who is the presenter of the A Dog's Life Podcast has tried out the app and said: “Caring for a dog is a sociable thing, and I don't know any dog owner who hasn't made new friends on their daily dog walk, myself included.

“The Doghood is a clever extension of that, and enables dog owners to access relevant local advice and make new friends in their area. I look forward to seeing you on the app!”

A VIP (Very Important Paws) Event at Pettitt and Boo in Norfolk proved to be a roaring success, creating an unforgettable day filled with pet-loving fun, excitement, and invaluable knowledge.

The event, which celebrated the profound bond between pet owners and their furry companions, attracted an enthusiastic crowd of pet lovers from across Norwich and beyond.

Highlights of the day included free goody bags with dog treat samples that left pets and their owners smiling from ear to ear. The carefully curated selection of nutritious and all-natural treats was a hit, reaffirming Pettitt and Boo's commitment to quality pet care. In addition, guests were invited to speak to the experts around the store who wore sashes with the details of their specialisms. Each expert then provided guests with more treats and samples when they spoke to them. This included free tennis balls, wild bird mix, flea combs, packs of raw food and of course, lots more treats.

Visitors therefore had the unique opportunity to connect with multiple experts in canine nutrition, grooming, and pet care. The knowledge shared by these specialists was invaluable, helping pet owners make informed decisions about their pets' health and well-being. The store also was very pleased to welcome local Holistic Veterinary Surgeon, Dr Shelagh Pitt, who was able to answer lots of pet-care related questions.

There was also a superb prize draw, where attendees had the chance to win a fantastic hamper packed with even more treats, toys, and accessories. All they had to do was guess the number of treats in the jar. Two people won the hamper, so the team at Pettitt and Boo are creating a second identical hamper for the second winner.

Ali Pettitt, from Pettitt and Boo, expressed her gratitude, saying: "We are absolutely thrilled with the overwhelming response to our VIP Event. It was heart-warming to see so much enjoyment from our customers on the day and to share in their passion for their pets. This event embodied the spirit of community and love for our furry family members."

The VIP (Very Important Paws) Event at Pettitt and Boo exceeded all expectations and demonstrated the store's unwavering commitment to offering the very best in pet care. As a family-owned chain of pet shops in Norfolk, their dedication to pet well-being shines brightly.

For more information about Pettitt and Boo and future events, please visit www.pettittandboo.co.uk

3D printed foot helps goat walk again

Thistle, a Nubian goat, has been given a new lease of life after being successfully fitted with a 3D printed prosthetic foot, following severe fractures as a kid...

Thistle, a Nubian goat, has been given a new lease of life after being successfully fitted with a 3D printed prosthetic foot, following severe fractures as a kid.

Thistle was five weeks old when she was first referred to the Royal Veterinary College’s (RVC) Equine Referral Hospital, after being born with a suspected deformity. Following a diagnosis of fractured digits by her vet, she was sent to the RVC for further evaluation and treatment.

A CT scan identified an infected fracture with loss of bone congruency, making any surgical fixes impossible. With no way of saving the limb, treatment options included amputation or euthanasia.

Wanting to do everything possible for Thistle, her owner opted for amputation, with the hope of fitting a prosthesis on the distal limb. The procedure was carried out under general anaesthesia, with another CT performed to gauge exact measurements of the stump. Professor Richard Bomphrey of the Structure and Motion Laboratory at the RVC, alongside Dr Perrier, Senior Lecturer in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery at the RVC, and her team designed and manufactured the 3D printed prosthetic foot.

Thistle recovered well from the amputation and returned to the RVC three weeks later to have her stitches removed and the new prosthetic limb fitted. Her little ‘ski boot’ had Velcro straps and a threaded bolt was inserted at the bottom to allow for adjustments in height as she grows. Several modifications were made to the design of the prosthesis over the course of her stay to make it more comfortable and, in particular, easier for her to lay down.

Melanie Perrier, Senior Lecturer in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery at the RVC said: “Thistle's progress and her initial response to the prosthesis are very encouraging. While she initially only used the prosthesis for a few steps, after a few days she was mostly weight-bearing on it and showing a more natural gait.

“She will wear her prosthetic for a little longer each day and undergo regular physiotherapy exercises. She will only wear the prosthesis for a few hours daily to start with so she can get accustomed to it gently, and this will be increased over the following weeks and months so that ultimately, she can wear her prosthesis throughout the day.”

Debbie Dale, Thistle’s owner, said: “I have always been very attached to having goats. Thistle was a twin and had some ligament issues from birth. We don’t know what caused the injury to her foot. Initial assessments were pointing towards having her having no option other than being put to sleep due to the extreme extent of the amputation she needed.

“I was convinced that due to her being so young and so well in every other way – that we needed to explore prosthetics as an alternative. Luckily, my vet agreed and referred us to the RVC where I met Melanie and the team. Thistle’s mum was allowed to come to the appointment as Thistle was still feeding from her at the time. The RVC team thoroughly investigated our options – even contacting other vet specialists in America before we ended up having the 3D printed prosthetic leg fitted. I am over the moon with Thistle’s progress. She’s back to her agile self – even bullying her brothers!”

Thistle has been given physiotherapy exercises by the team at the RVC to help her use the limb and develop her proprioception and musculature. She will need to be continually monitored for pressure sores as she grows, but it looks as though this kid is taking it all in her stride.

The virtual event will gather renowned international experts who will cover the best practices to optimize prolificity in the kennel, through topics such as fertility and mating, gestation, and parturition as well as nutrition and genetics. Responsible breeding and ownership will be the focus, with topics including early socialization, behaviour and training, and matching the dog with their perfect host family. The event will be available in 9 languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Japanese, Portuguese, and Turkish.

The two-day Forum will alternate live talks, roundtables, behind the scenes with inspiring Royal Canin partners such as LA Once, and panel discussions with Cécile Coutens, Global Royal Canin President; Olivier Reymond, Royal Canin Veterinary Business & Corporate Affairs Vice President; Pr. Ann Van Soom; Dr. Juliette Roos-Pichenot; Pr. Sylvie Chastant; Dr. Tabitha Hookey; Dr. Angela Hugues; Dr. Helen Zulch; famous breeder Antonio Palladini and animal behavior specialist Lesley Deacon & Puppy Trainer Lucie Holbrook.

“Royal Canin is keen on getting professionals from the ecosystem onboard for the health and wellbeing of pets. Breeders are the guardians that set pets up for the best start of life, and we have nurtured strong, long-lasting partnerships with them since our creation. Together, we create mutual value at the service of cats and dogs”, said Cécile Coutens, Royal Canin Global President.

Following last year’s edition which brought together thousands of breeders, pet owners, dog experts, and kennel clubs from more than seventy countries, Royal Canin is eager to play a role in responsible breeding and pet ownership, and to gather key stakeholders so they can exchange knowledge and set up the ecosystem for positive change. This event is one of the many actions led by the brand to tackle this important issue in the pet industry, with, for instance, the Pet Health and Wellbeing Initiative, which aims at collectively fighting illegal trade and extreme breeding by promoting responsible breeding and pet ownership with our partners.

Bira welcomes guide for retailers to create accessible environment for elderly

Retail trade association Bira said a recent guide released by the The International Longevity Centre (ILC) shows important steps shopkeepers must take to make their stores more accessible for the elderly.

The British Independent Retailers Association (BIRA), which works with over 6,000 independent businesses of all sizes across the UK, praised the International Longevity Centre (ILC) for the recent release of their informative guides designed to promote a healthier and more inclusive retail environment.

Bira said the new resources were 'invaluable tools' for retailers striving to enhance the shopping experience for older customers and individuals with varying needs.

The comprehensive series of five guides have been designed to offer practical tips and knowledge to help retailers understand and address the potential challenges faced by older shoppers.

The guides offer recommendations and real-life examples, and intend to help minimise the existing barriers that older people, individuals with limited mobility, or impaired vision, as well as those with caring responsibilities, might encounter while navigating local shopping environments.

It also provides useful signposts for further information and resources to aid retailers in improving their local shopping spaces.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira said: "People talk about the demise of high streets. There is no doubt they are changing and evolving, but they still play a major part is local communities. A healthy high street is good for the local economy, but it can also make a positive contribution to people’s lives. These guides offer valuable insight and tips for retailers to support healthy ageing and create business opportunities. Indie retailers care for their customers and the guide will only enhance the local shopping experience for everyone."

Animal welfare lectures at London Vet Show

Last year at London Vet Show, IVC Evidensia focused on their commitment to animal welfare by handing out QR code stickers that would assist vet professionals in dealing with Non-Accidental Injury (NAI) cases.

The code linked to a form that was accessible to anyone, even those outside of the group, meaning that more people would have access to ongoing welfare support. This has led to more than 100 unique enquiries to the team, who have been able to provide ongoing support and guidance.

This year, that particular focus will continue in the form of two animal welfare lectures, presented by David Martin, Group Veterinary Welfare Advisor and Richard Sinclair, Welfare Lead and Clinical Director at Lamond Vets.

The lectures will cover both the criminal underworld, which will peel back the curtain of organised crime in relation to everyday welfare, and how to deal with welfare catastrophes in-practice, giving vet professionals the tools they need to deal with the most serious cases.

Both lectures will take place on the first day of London Vet Show and will involve both David and Richard sharing relevant insights into these topics, allowing attendees to find out more about the welfare side of veterinary by drawing on real-life cases and scenarios that, in many instances, led to successful prosecutions.

The criminal underworld and animal welfare

Our first lecture will delve into the dark underbelly of welfare, detailing the impact of organised crime and how many of the most serious cases seen in practices across the UK can be attributed to it in one way or another. The full summary of the lecture is as follows:

In this session we will peel back the shroud of secrecy and reveal the true involvement of serious organised crime in everyday animal welfare. From ear cropping and co-ownership to fertility clinics and unlicensed breeders.

We will reveal the presence and influence of organised crime groups in animal welfare and the interactions that we are all unwittingly having with them on a regular basis.

We will look at practical steps that the profession can take to help educate, inform and disrupt the activities of these organised criminal groups.

Finally, we will look at the work being done by enforcement agencies from the RSPCA right through to the National Crime Agency to stamp out organised animal abuse.

David commented on the lecture ahead of London Vet Show in November: “This lecture will reveal to the profession the scale at which organised crime has infiltrated our world and the influence that is having on both our clients and their pets, but also us as well professionally.

“Whether that is from having to deal with newly purchased puppies that are extremely ill through to the dramatic rise in large breed aggressive dogs, we will demonstrate some of the underlying issues and, more importantly, what the profession can do to assist in stamping out the destructive influence of organised crime in our everyday practice.”

Welfare catastrophes: what do you do?

Some of the most serious cases that vet professionals will see in their working lives will stay with them for the rest of their careers, depending on the circumstances surrounding the case and of course, the outcome.

Like any emergency, it’s important to be prepared and not allow a serious case to turn into a catastrophe, and our second welfare lecture references case studies to demonstrate how to deal with them. The summary is as follows:

Anyone working in clinical practice will on occasion be faced with a serious welfare case. In this lecture we will explore the simple practical steps that can be taken to prevent a welfare challenge escalating to a welfare catastrophe.

Through case studies we will explore common areas of concern to practice teams when dealing with welfare cases including client confidentiality, GDPR and how to support vulnerable clients in crisis.

We will also explore how techniques borrowed from cutting edge forensic science when combined with high quality veterinary medicine can be used by us all to bring the worst animal abusers to justice.

Richard Sinclair referenced the upcoming lecture ahead of the event:

"Welfare casework can be challenging, stressful and time-sensitive, but they can also be among the most rewarding experiences of a veterinary career.

“In this interactive lecture, using case examples, we will outline challenges commonly encountered, and provide the audience with the toolkit to navigate cases and secure successful prosecutions."

Both lectures take place on day one of the event in the IVC Evidensia lecture theatre. ‘The criminal underworld and animal welfare’ takes place at 2.40pm while ‘Welfare catastrophes, what do you do?’ is just afterwards at 4.00pm.

Start planning your visit today by downloading the LVS app – just search for ‘The London Vet Show’ on the Apple App Store or Google Play store and choosing the sessions you will be attending, including ones from our very own schedule.

Award-winning retailer reveals secrets of success

Wetherby-based Discount Feeds has been named UK Pet Retailer of the Year in the prestigious PetQuip Industry Awards 2023. Jo Sutton, who owns the store with husband Rob, reveals the secrets of her company’s success.

What does this award mean to you?

This award means the world. We are a small local business focusing on being the best that we can be. To have our store recognised by PetQuip is just a dream come true.

Who works in the business?

It’s a family run business. I am in the shop full time, and we have four part-time staff. My husband Rob does all the building work instore – designing new racking and repairs etc. He works away during the week as a telecoms engineer. Rob is also my support network – he is always there to pick up the pieces, give me encouragement and listen to new ideas.

How long has the store been operating?

The original shop was established in February 2009. We purchased the store in February 2019. I had been the instore dog groomer for three years and when the opportunity came quite unexpectedly to take over the reins I jumped at the chance. I promised my husband Rob I could make it work.

Do you just sell pet food?

The shop initially started focusing on horse feed, and this quickly grew to incorporate pets and other animals. We now carry a large selection of feeds for all animals, from reptiles to small animal, cat, dog, horse, poultry, wild bird and farm animals. There is also a huge accessories range, including beds, leads and collars, harnesses, and treats…the list is endless. We now cover every pet requirement. I am always watching the industry – this year was my seventh trip to PATS. It’s so important for us to keep up to date and stay relevant.

Are all your products discounted?

When the shop was first established there was a focus on price. I have changed the focus from price to service, knowledge and trust. I try to be fair with our pricing, I balance the needs of the business and the customer to find a strategy that works and add value with our customer experience instore. I think it’s important too to ensure we consider the brands we stock – we wouldn’t want to devalue a brand, so we work closely with all reps to maintain a good relationship. There are exciting plans to rebrand the store, to incorporate our ethos and dispel the myths that our main focus is price.

What makes your store so special?

We strive to provide the best service we can. Team work is really important – I never underestimate how important the team is to operating successfully and happily. Our staff are hugely valued individually and as a team, and in turn love working here and mirror my desire to provide an excellent customer experience. My knowledge and passion for animal feeds, particularly canine, seems to be a key feature for our customers.

Do you hold special events, competitions and initiatives?

Yes, lots. There is always something coming soon or being worked on in the background. Most recently we held a charity fund-raising day for a local event rider who is taking part in a charity horse race. We were heavily involved in collecting and transporting donations for the Ukraine Appeal, in just seven days we sent seven pallets of donations. We hold a Christmas shopping evening in December so customers can join us for a mince pie and browse the store. We are main sponsor of our local country show to support them, and in turn this event always raises the profile of Discount Feeds. We’re constantly running brand awareness initiatives, both instore and on social media, and I am a huge fan of a retailer display competition – my favourite involved me wearing an inflatable banana suit stood in a paddling pool full of feed!. So yes, there’s always something happening here.

Do you offer a delivery service?

We do, Tuesday is our main order and delivery day. However, I often drop items off on my way home as we live in the town and try to help out where we can.

What sets you apart from the rest?

I suspect the answer might be me – the experiences in my life have set me up and given me the knowledge needed to own a pet shop. I have always run the shop based on how I would like to have a shopping experience. I worked in market research for 10 years which gave great insight into customer requirements. We have a great reputation for advice, which I am particularly proud of. My educational background is in science and nutrition, holding a BSc (Hons) Equine Science. I was one of the first to complete the iPet Level 3 in Canine Nutrition, and I like to keep up to date with the latest research and advances in the area. I try to be active on the shop floor, interacting with customers and am always happy to discuss various topics if prompted. We always try to be unbiased in our approach – I feel our recommendations should be based on individuals and not the ‘bestsellers’. It’s important to understand the full situation and work with some animals for long periods of time. I’m also conscious that situations evolve, especially in the world we currently live in or due to health changes, and where necessary I’ll update my advice to reflect this.

How do you keep your regular customers happy?

Consistency is key but also flexibility. Our size really helps our adaptability, and our ability to provide a personal service. We face challenges as everyone does, but it’s how we deal with them that makes us stand out. I feel that we have a very loyal customer base, sometimes I even know the order when I see the car drive around the corner.

PATS has smashed all records with the two-day show at Telford in Shropshire attracting its highest ever attendance figures since the event was launch in 2009.

A total of 2,332 retailers and buyers came through the doors of the Telford International Centre, which was 7% higher than the previous record set at PATS Telford last year.

The largest-ever PATS show, staged in three halls, closed with visitors and exhibitors agreeing it had been a huge success, with the event delivering an unrivalled platform for the launch of hundreds of exciting new pet product innovations.

As well as a record number of exhibitors – more than 260 in total – the New Product Showcase attracted the highest-ever entry of nearly 400.

Organiser Gordon Thomas said many of the companies exhibiting at PATS Telford were eager to point out the quality of people visiting their stands had been of the highest standard.

“Exhibitors told us they met with the key decision makers and buyers, and that was good to hear because we put in place measures that ensured the right people attended. Overall, the response to PATS Telford 2023 has been excellent and positive, and proves that the pet industry is firmly behind this show. We can’t wait to stage our first-ever three-day show next year.”

The overwhelming reaction from exhibitors was one of great delight.

Amy Spratt, brand manager of Coya Pet, commented: “We had a fantastic show. It was only our second time at PATS after launching at Sandown in March but our stand enjoyed visits from a huge number of current and potential trade customers. The event gave us the opportunity to have quality conversations with the audience and we couldn’t be happier. We can’t wait for next year, and we will be back bigger and better than ever.”

Sean Kelly, founding director of Petcon-UK, agreed that it had been a highly successful show, adding: “It was great to catch up with old friends, to make new ones and share the excitement around our brand and product developments.”

Gerard O’Mahony, managing director of Pedigree Wholesale, said: “We had a very busy PATS show, and it was great to round it off with no less than four PetQuip Awards.”

The Canagan Group also reported having a great show. Commercial director Charlie Williams commented: “We had a fantastic experience. PATS provides us with an excellent platform to connect with industry professionals, gain valuable market insights, and establish relationships, making it a truly successful and rewarding experience.”

Martin Breen, director of pet care at Group55, said: “We had a great PATS, our busiest ever. It was great to see so many visitors to our stand, both established customers and new buyers alike, and the enthusiasm for Animology really shone through. We launched a number of new product lines at the show, and these were particularly well received, with many orders placed. As always, it was a pleasure to catch up with our many friends across our unique industry, and we look forward to PATS 2024.”

And Rob Newsome, director sales and operations at Danish Design, added: “PATS Telford is the show not to be missed, we get busier every year without a doubt.”

The New Starter Zone proved to be a big hit with visitors, a fact backed up by exhibitor Furr Boost. The brand’s founder Louise Toal said: “We had a jammed packed stand for both days of the show. We met a lot of new customers who had either seen the product over social media and in the press or had received requests from their customers to stock the range.”

Visitors were attracted in their droves to the WHM Pet Group stand, which took on a ‘Birdie’ theme to signify the launch of new wild bird products. Brand manager Emily Scruton commented: “We like to have a bit of fun at the show and people keep returning to our stand every year just to see what the theme is. We love being part of this event.”

PATS Telford also got the thumbs up from visitors.

Jo Sutton, owner of Discount Feeds in Wetherby, crowned UK Pet Retailer of the Year at the PetQuip Awards, said: “This year was my seventh trip to PATS. It’s so important for us to keep up to date and stay relevant, and the event helps us to do that every year.”

Jo Milnes, Distinctive Pets in Yorkshire, commented: “I think the show is important to the industry as it gives people the chance to talk face to face. I loved the New Starter Zone.”

The final word was left to retail group petplace, which has a number of stores across North Wales. “It was great to visit PATS Telford again this year and meet with leading industry experts. We work closely with the brands we stock so it was great to catch up face to face and discuss how we can continue to strive towards our shared vision. It was fantastic to meet new suppliers to the trade and the quality of new products this year was incredible. We are so excited to see what's next.”

Premum dog food manufacturer secures distribution deal with Pedigree Wholesale

Barnsley-based pet food company Walker & Drake has secured a nationwide distribution deal with Pedigree Wholesale which will expose the company’s product range to a much wider customer base...

Barnsley-based pet food company Walker & Drake has secured a nationwide distribution deal with Pedigree Wholesale which will expose the company’s product range to a much wider customer base.

Walker & Drake recently exhibited at PATS Telford for the first time this year where it launched the new wet food and salmon oil. The stand was extremely busy with existing and potential customers drawn to the vibrant packaging of the range. The company is now following up the leads from the show including interest from a distributor in Japan.

Walker & Drake has received industry recognition in a short space of time. It was voted in 2020 by Yorkshire Insider Magazine as one of the top 50 companies to watch. They were also a finalist in 2021 in both the PetQuip and Pet Industry Federation Awards receiving Highly Commended for the Best New Pet Product (Food) at the PetQuip Awards and this year, they were finalists in four categories in the PetQuip Awards and are nominated in two categories in the PIF Awards which will be presented later on his year.

Tim Matthews, who founded the business with fellow directors David Taylor and Richard Grant, said: “Walker & Drake was formed with the clear intention of producing a British made, complete nutritional dog food made using the ‘minimal processing’ Cold Pressed technique and good quality ingredients.

“At Walker & Drake we have developed great products with clear nutritional advantages, we strive to create a culture of integrity, to communicate clearly and honestly with our customers, and to educate and support our stockists.

“The shelves are full of too much of the same type of packaging with mixed and confusing messaging. We’re on a mission to change that with big, bold, playful and colourful branding.

“With Cold Pressed being essentially an artisan process (real people operating real machines!)  We can be quite dynamic with our production. We make and bag regular batches to keep best before dates long and move stock quickly through the system. We are particular about ingredient quality and source. We also keep batch samples for traceability and quality consistency purposes.

“We source ingredients within the UK where possible and we feel that with regard to sustainability, we are doing what we can by using as many ingredients that are part of the human food production process.  Our new wet food comes in Tetra Pak cartons.  The single piece of packaging makes it smaller and more compact meaning less lorries on the road, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. Tetra Pak® has its own recycling plant in the UK, enabling its cartons to be remade into everything from roof tiles to toilet roll cores. Their investment in UK recycling means that over 94% of councils collect the cartons, either from the roadside or from recycling centres

“We are looking forward to furthering our relationship with Pedigree Wholesale and to see where this will take the brand as we now have nationwide distribution. We are also delighted to have been recognised by the industry having been nominated for so many awards this year.”
