Plant-based dog food recipe approved as vegan product

BSB Products, the exclusive importer and distributor of Petcurean Premium Pet Foods in the UK, has announced that GATHER Endless Valley – a plant-based recipe for adult dogs – has been accredited as an approved vegan product by the Vegetarian Society...

BSB Products, the exclusive importer and distributor of Petcurean Premium Pet Foods in the UK, has announced that GATHER Endless Valley – a plant-based recipe for adult dogs – has been accredited as an approved vegan product by the Vegetarian Society.

To be accredited, products must be free from animal-derived ingredients, GMO-free, have no cross-contamination during production and no animal testing conducted or commissioned.

GATHER Endless Valley is formulated with certified organic peas and other sustainably grown, pure and natural ingredients. The peas used are certified organic in compliance with the European Union Organic Standards. The recipe is non-GMO and contains zero rendered ingredients, animal ingredients, artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

The product has been widely embraced by dogs and their owners who either prefer a plant-based diet for personal reasons or require it due to their pet’s food sensitivities or other health reasons.

Karen Rodger, director at BSB Products, said: “A plant-based diet is now a viable option for dogs. The key for adult dogs is that they consume sufficient protein containing all 10 essential amino acids, and complementary ingredients that provide complete and balanced nutrition, all of which is delivered by GATHER Endless Valley.

“We are very excited that Petcurean’s GATHER Endless Valley has been recognised by the Vegetarian Society as an approved vegan product. Consumers can feel confident that they are choosing a premium-quality recipe that has met the strict criteria of the Vegetarian Society in both the sourcing of ingredients and the production method.”

Every supplier of ingredients for GATHER Endless Valley has to meet Petcurean’s strict criteria for sustainability, including:

  • Protecting water supplies and limiting water use
  • Protecting farmer and producer livelihoods
  • Ensuring the preservation of natural resources
  • Actively working to preserve biodiversity

GATHER Endless Valley also utilises a USDA certified bio-based packaging, reducing the use of petroleum-based resources by 30 per cent.

The product is available in 2.7kg and 7.3kg bags. It can be purchased online at bsbproducts.co.uk or from pet retailers across the UK and Ireland.

The UK’s Spring pet industry exhibition is just days away

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s Spring Pet Industry Exhibition, which opens its doors this Sunday and Monday. PATS Sandown takes place from 9-10 February, with 150 companies and brands showcasing hundreds of new products.

Visitors and exhibitors alike are excitedly preparing for the UK’s Spring Pet Industry Exhibition, which opens its doors this Sunday and Monday.

PATS Sandown takes place from 9-10 February, with 150 companies and brands showcasing hundreds of new products.

PATS always attracts large numbers of dedicated buyers from both the UK and overseas, and this year offers even more opportunities for business. All the big players in the industry will be in attendance, as well as many newer or smaller companies hoping to catch the eye with innovative products. There is something for everyone.

Other highlights include the New Product Showcase and the ever-popular expert seminars and demonstrations from leading figures in the pet and grooming industries – a great opportunity to discover some useful trade secrets.

It will be the second time the event has taken place on a Sunday and Monday in February following a highly successful move to the earlier date in 2019.

“There has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to make sure that PATS Sandown delivers the widest range of exhibitors, new products, seminars from experts and grooming demonstrations…all under one roof,” said organiser Gordon Thomas.

“There is so much to see and do inside the exhibition halls I would advise visitors to arrive early at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey – the show opens on both days at 9.30am. We can’t wait to greet everyone.”

The New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews, is a great opportunity for visiting retailers to see and touch the new products they will be stocking for the coming season.

A record number of more than 200 entries to the Showcase will judged by a panel of retailers for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, so the results will be known and highlighted throughout the Surrey and Esher Halls for the rest of the exhibition.

There will also be a full programme of free retailer-focused seminars, sponsored by Pet Product Marketing and produced in association with Pedigree Wholesale. A wide range of topics will be covered, including: how to make customer loyalty the driving force of your business; helping cats and dogs to thrive will help your business to thrive; using calendar events in 2020 to drive sales; how to increase footfall by stocking raw foods; and how retailers can dominate the market and smash the competition.

The PATS Grooming Workshops, in association with the Welsh Grooming Academy, will feature state-of-the-art demonstrations from leading names in the industry, and this year sees the launch of a new competition called ‘Groom-Off Sunday’, offering 16 budding groomers the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

To help make the visitor experience even more enjoyable and rewarding, both the Surrey and Esher Halls have their own entrances and registration points, with visitors benefitting from free show entry, free parking, a free catalogue and many special offers.

There will also be a wide range of food available from all the various outlets and visitors will receive a free cup of tea or coffee voucher, which will be redeemable all day.

To register for free entry to the show and to view the full list of exhibitors visit www.patshow.co.uk

Opening times

Sunday 9th February: 9.30am-5.00pm

Monday 10th February: 9.30am-4.00pm

Initiative to revolutionise pet healthcare industry

Vet-tech start-up, Vet-AI, has formed a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with University of Leeds academics to revolutionise the pet healthcare industry...

Vet-tech start-up, Vet-AI, has formed a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with University of Leeds academics to revolutionise the pet healthcare industry.

The KTP – a collaboration between academia and industry created to solve a strategic business challenge through expertise and new thinking – will bring world-leading Artificial Intelligence experts in image analysis, Professor David Hogg and Dr Derek Magee, from the University’s School of Computing to supervise a ground-breaking new project. A full-time KTP Associate will be appointed to work alongside the Vet-AI team based at Nexus, the University’s innovation hub.

Vet-AI launched its flagship app – Joii – earlier this year and has now received grant funding from Innovate UK for this KTP to bring in the academic expertise to enhance the customer experience. Using video-based machine learning models, the new feature will enable pet owners to use the video camera on their smartphone to detect gait abnormalities, such as arthritis and hip dysplasia.

Paul Hallett, co-founder of Vet-AI, said: “Our KTP Associate will work closely with our software development team as well as our clinical team of vets and vet nurses, as part of a multi-disciplinary partnership, focused on developing the diagnosis, instructions and advice elements of our product.

“Our move to Nexus was driven by our desire to collaborate with academic minds at the University of Leeds to overcome complex challenges and grow our platform’s technology. This partnership clearly vindicates that decision and we’re delighted to be working with world leading tech experts as we move into a new phase of AI development.”

Dr Martin Stow, Nexus Director, added: “Vet-AI’s KTP is a true meeting of minds between academia and industry. It’s a great example of the deep and long-term collaborations we can facilitate between the University and Nexus members, to power innovation and increase competitiveness. As leading disruptors in the vet-tech industry, Vet-AI has already enjoyed rapid growth this year and with the support of its new KTP colleagues, I’m excited to see where the company will go next.”

Ian Blakemore, Knowledge Transfer Adviser at the Knowledge Transfer Network (one of the delivery partners of the KTP programme) added: “‘Vet-AI are one of several micro SMEs based at Nexus using a KTP as part of their ambitious scale-up and development plans. The close proximity of the business to the heart of the university makes collaborative working part of ‘business as usual’, rather than something else which needs to be managed. The project with Vet-AI is at an early stage, however it is already showing signs of success”.

This successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership project, funded by UK Research and Innovation through Innovate UK, is part of the government’s Industrial Strategy.

Lily's Kitchen creates ultimate Doggy Dentist experience

To coincide with Pet Dental Health Month in February, Lily’s Kitchen has created the ultimate Doggy Dentist experience for pups and their owners. The Doggy Dentist Pop-up  is taking place at 297 Westbourne Grove, Notting Hill, London, W11 2QA, on February 13-16.

According to Lily’s Kitchen research:

  • Less than half of dog owners take their dog for an annual dental inspection
  • Over half believe their dog suffers from bad breath
  • A third wouldn’t know what to do if their dog had a dental issue

The dental experience in London will include:

  • A canine-friendly check-in – pets and their parents will be greeted by a friendly receptionist who will guide them through a series of short and snappy questions (including some fun ones!) to ensure the expert vet has all the important dental details.
  • The petting room – this is where the real fun begins. No more nervous panting in the waiting room, it’s playtime! ‘Play buddies’ will keep dogs entertained hunting for Woofbrush rewards in the ball pool while owners learn all about the science behind Lily’s Kitchen’s innovative, natural dental chew and how best to care for their dog’s teeth via an interactive quiz and fun fact-trail.
  • An expert check-up – time to show those pearly whites, but don’t worry there’s no intimidating examination table in this room. Woofers get to relax and watch squirrels on the TV screen as the vet takes a peep at their chompers. As well as best dental care practice advice for canine companions, each dog will receive a Woofbrush to make sure they’re selfie ready!
  • Snap the Hollywoof smile – stop by our photobooth before you go, have your dog pose for a snap for the Hollywoof Hall of Fame. Photos will be sent directly to your smartphone for you to share with all your pup’s adoring fans on social media, and can also be printed on site for you to put on your fridge back home.

Henrietta Morrison, founder of Lily’s Kitchen, comments: “Keeping dogs’ teeth in good condition is really important and very much part of being a responsible pet owner. However many don’t feel confident about how to properly brush their dog’s teeth or know where to get advice on good canine dental practice. It can be a bit embarrassing when the vet looks at your dog’s teeth and says we should be doing a much better job.

“Which is why we have created our unique Doggy Dentist pop up. We want to give dog owners lots of tips and tricks to ensure their dog’s teeth are in tip top condition. We think it will be the best dental experience they’ve ever have and what better time to do it than Pet Dental Health Month!”

Pet owners can book their visit to the Lily’s Kitchen Doggy Dentist in advance: A limited number of 30-minute bookings will be available each day, as well as a number of walk-in appointments, subject to availability, and limited to two dogs per entry.  Guests can book their visit at Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lilys-kitchen-doggy-dentist-tickets-91135668237

Every Doggy Dentist visitor will get to take home Lily’s Kitchen Woofbrush dental chews to help them keep up the good work on dental care.

A Woofbrush a day keeps the dog breath away

Dog guests at the Lily’s Kitchen Doggy Dentist will be given Lily’s Kitchen’s Woofbrush dental chews which are available in three sizes in Tesco, Pets at Home, hundreds of independent pet shops and online at www.lilyskitchen.co.uk. RRP from £1.20 (single chew) and from £6.00 (multipack of 7).

Lily’s Kitchen has worked with an expert vet dentist to develop these delicious, chewy, spongey dental chews, which are made from natural ingredients including fennel, parsley, coconut oil, algae and decaf green tea extract.

Unlike other well-known dental sticks, feeding Woofbrush chews as part of a dog’s daily dental regime leaves owners feeling totally guilt-free as they contain no sugar or chemicals. Unlike human toothpaste, dogs swallow their dental chew. But because Woofbrush is free from any hidden nasties, owners needn’t worry about what happens when it is swallowed after chewing.

Woofbrush is designed to fight plaque, which can be a major cause of poor canine dental health. Thanks to its unique spongey texture, Woofbrush goes right to the gumline when chewed, which is where plaque build-up can be hard to tackle. Woofbrush is designed to clean teeth and freshen breath; bad smelling dog breath can often be a sign of poor dental health and can lead to further health issues affecting the liver, kidneys and heart.

As well as these dental health benefits, Woofbrush chews deliver on taste too. Each Woofbrush is a long-lasting chew that dogs adore whilst also cleaning their teeth daily.

Eligible SMEs looking to exhibit at Interzoo can apply for cash grants of £1,000.

Oscar rewards loyal customers with year's supply of food

Oscar Pet Foods has announced that Monica and Alan Bower, from Waterlooville, Hampshire, are the winners of a search for the company’s longest-standing customer.

After 25 years of being loyal customers, it turns out to be a time of double celebration for the couple as they recently marked their silver wedding anniversary!

Originally introduced to Oscar by retired franchisee, Jim Davis, they continue to receive a fantastic personal service from Lucy Morgan – their local nutritional advisor in Southampton.

Monica and Alan win the top prize of free pet food and treats for a year, while runners-up in the competition will receive a limited edition gift box for their pets.

Monica said: “It all began when Oscar knocked on the door 25 years ago. To our surprise Jim Davis, having been a former work colleague of Alan's, became our lucky introduction to a pet food service that almost joined us down the aisle on our Wedding Day!

“Nowadays, our fourth-generation, two-year-old German Shepherd, Sady, continues in the paw prints of her predecessors: enjoying all the benefits available to her from Oscar.

“There is always something new to learn when you own a pet and we have nothing but praise for the expert knowledge, professional support, reliable service and healthy food – delivered right to our doorstep by Lucy.

“We are over the moon to have won the longest-standing customer prize, and, whilst still feeling lucky, we will always remember that our luckiest day was really the day we became Oscar customers.”

Sainsbury’s launches interactive tool to help pet owners

Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance has launched the Pawfect Match tool to enable future pet owners to make informed decisions when choosing the most suitable breed for them. The tool enables dog and cat owners to research various breeds including how much exercise they will need, how excitable the animal is and how well they get on with children...

  • More than half of cat and dog owners (51%) don’t research their pet’s breed
  • A fifth of pet owners have rehomed an animal
  • Sainsbury’s Bank launches a Pawfect Match tool to help future pet owners make informed decisions about cat and dog breeds
  • Sainsbury’s Bank now offers lifetime pet insurance for cats and dogs

Despite being a nation of animal lovers, new research from Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance found that more than a fifth (22%) of pet owners have regretted choosing their pet’s breed. Reasons for regret included that they didn’t have enough time to look after the animal (31%), they turned out to be allergic to the pet (18%) and because they didn’t like their pet’s personality (16%).

The study also reveals that more than half of cat and dog owners don’t research their pet’s breed before ownership and only 18% spent more than a week researching the right breed for their lifestyle. More than a fifth (22%) of pet owners have rehomed an animal and dog owners are more likely to regret their pup (26%) compared to cat owners (16%).

These stark statistics echo latest RSPCA figures as the charity rehomes over 40,000 pets in a year.

Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance has launched the Pawfect Match tool to enable future pet owners to make informed decisions when choosing the most suitable breed for them. The tool enables dog and cat owners to research various breeds including how much exercise they will need, how excitable the animal is and how well they get on with children.

TV vet, Dr Scott Miller commented: “I am saddened to hear that so many pet owners are regretting the animals they have chosen as companions. Dogs and cats come in all shapes and sizes, and have different temperaments. Looking after a pet is a huge commitment so it is important that people undertake adequate research before buying a pet to ensure it is a happy experience for you and the animal.

“If a pet owner is struggling to look after their animal, I urge them to speak to a professional for advice. The Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance website also includes top tips for each dog and cat breed on how best to care for these incredible creatures.”

The study found half of people (50%) decided to get a pet for companionship and 38% because a pet can offer unconditional love. Some pet owners admitted getting a pet breed because it had either appeared in a film or a celebrity owns them (5%).

Jason King, Customer Director at Sainsbury’s Bank said:  “Britain is a nation of animal lovers and pets are part of the family.  We understand how important it is to undertake research before adopting or purchasing a pet, including what type of pet insurance is best suited to your dog or cat’s needs.  Sainsbury’s Bank pet insurance now offers lifeline cover for cats and dogs so that their owners can have peace of mind should anything happen to their four legged friends.”

A popular pet store is set to close next month with “increasing competitive market challenges” being blamed for the closure.

McLaughlin's Pet and Garden Shop, of Ship Street, Cork, will close its doors for the final time after serving the Irish city’s community since 1978 and spanning three generations.

"The decision to close our Cork store comes on the back of increasing competitive market challenges and the decision to centralise our operations to our headquarters in Bandon. Bandon and our Mitchelstown store will continue to serve the County of Cork, and beyond like we have for the past 70 years,” revealed the owners.

Taking place from Sunday 26 and Monday 27 April 2020 at the Marshall Arena (Stadium MK) in Milton Keynes, Petindex will offer a fresh take on the traditional industry trade show and provide an innovative range of features to encourage visitors from the full spectrum of the pet industry to engage with exhibitors.

Forty seminars covering retail, pet grooming, animal wellness and pet services will take place over the two days in three seminar rooms. The seminars will be ‘silent seminars’, with attendees wearing headphones, so the audio quality won’t be affected by external noise. Topics will include pet audience market segmentation; brand protection, grooming nervous dogs, cats and stress; enrichment for dogs; trends in pet food, CBD and its uses and what should be in your pet first aid kit….to highlight but a few.

Visitors can expect show offers from exhibitors and novel features, such as a wine trail, to make their experience at the show a little different. In addition, a Product Showcase area will display a selection of pet products put forward by exhibitors as part of the Pet Innovation Awards, and visitors will be able to have their say by voting for the winners. On set-up day, exhibitors will be able to obtain discounted tickets for the football match taking place in the adjacent stadium.

PIF members can look forward to fast-track access at the show and entry to the PIF members’ lounge with their new membership cards.  There will also be meeting pods, on-site catering, free parking, excellent road and rail access with complementary shuttle bus to the venue.

An increase of over 100% in applications for the Pet Industry Awards will help to make the Awards Dinner, in the ballroom of the Hilton DoubleTree Milton Keynes on Sunday 26 April, the most exciting ever. Fabulous entertainment will be in the form of talented digital illusionists and a live band, alongside an excellent three course dinner and networking opportunities into the earlier hours.

The British Dog Grooming Championship takes place on Sunday 26 April to determine the 2020 Groomer of the Year, with classes aimed dog groomers of all abilities. There will also be classes taking place under European Grooming Association rules and a range of European judges will be in attendance to oversee proceedings. A firmly established and successful event now in its 38th year, the competition attracts dozens of competitors each year and will be supported by a range of grooming demonstrations from top UK and overseas groomers, including Sathit Suratphiphit, a world renowned expert on the Asian style of dog grooming from the Starwood School of Grooming in Thailand.

Bermuda Water Gardens has been working hard since its re-launch in 2017 to bring the brand back to the stature it once held within the industry over the previous 22 years.

What was once part of the Solus Garden and Leisure company then Scotts Miracle-Gro, Bermuda was subsequently purchased in late 2017 by Evolution Aqua Ltd. Thanks to their superb expertise, Bermuda have managed in this very short time to re-establish itself as the must stock brand due to proven quality backed with excellent margins, with stock availability second to none.

Bermuda have many new and innovative products for this coming season along with stunning point of sale and merchandising, this will help maintain the enormous growth experienced so far.

They have already identified many original and exciting product lines for 2021 so the future for Bermuda has never been stronger.

Bermuda will also be exhibiting once again this year at Glee 2020 with a substantially larger stand.

Bob Meacham, the UK Sales Manager, and Adam James, the Area Sales Manager, would like to thank all of the trade who have supported them so far - they really appreciate it!

Vet centre gives Spring Spaniel new lease of life

The Cardiology team at Pride Veterinary Centre recently performed an unusual procedure to alleviate a congenital heart defect obstructing the blood flow back to the heart. This was the first time Pride Veterinary Centre has undertaken this procedure, which is rare in both human and veterinary medicine.

Chester, a Springer Spaniel age 7 months was referred to Pride Veterinary Centre for investigation of abdominal distention and ascites detected by the referring vet.

He initially saw the Internal Medicine team due to suspicion of a hepatic problem but was then passed to the Cardiology team for further investigation and treatment.

Investigations

Rachel Blake, Veterinary Cardiologist at Pride Veterinary Centre explains, “Diagnosis was made on echocardiography, which identified the congenital heart defect cor triatriatum dexter, resulting in right-sided congestive heart failure.”

This is a congenital defect that occurs due to persistence of an embryologic structure in the heart resulting in a membrane dividing the right atrium into two chambers. There is usually a defect in the membrane allowing blood to pass between the two chambers but if this communication is very small it can result in obstruction of blood returning to the heart and the development of ascites.

Once the ascites reaches a significant volume it can be uncomfortable for the animal and can put pressure on the diaphragm, impeding breathing. There have not been enough cases reported to establish an accurate life expectancy but it is likely that if left untreated this condition would have significantly shortened Chester’s life.

Treatment

The Cardiology team at Pride Veterinary Centre initially treated Chester with oral medications to control his right-sided congestive heart failure.

Once this was achieved, Chester underwent balloon dilation of the cor triatriatum dexter which allowed his medications to be stopped. During this procedure, a balloon catheter is inserted through the femoral vein to the right atrium. The balloon is passed through the small defect in the membrane and inflated, breaking down the membrane and increasing the size of the communication between the two chambers of the right atrium.

Veterinary Cardiology Specialist Rachel Blake worked alongside members of the Anaesthesia and Diagnostic Imaging teams, and with the assistance of an external Veterinary Cardiologist on this uncommon procedure.

Rachel says, “Having a multi-disciplinary referral service is key to the success of procedures such as this balloon dilation. We rely heavily on the expertise of our colleagues, both vets and veterinary nurses.”

Rachel joined the Cardiology service in May 2019 and has added interventional cardiology procedures to the range of referral services available at Pride Veterinary Centre.

This condition is rare in both humans and animals and the procedure was a first for Pride Veterinary Centre.

Recovery

Chester recovered well from his procedure and we have been able to stop all of this medications.   He has been doing very well since going home and is even more lively than before.

Rachel adds, “We are very pleased with Chester’s recovery. The procedure went well and we have been getting updates on his antics at home. He is certainly a lively fellow and we are so happy to see him live his very best life post-procedure.”

Pet shop averts threat of closure over rent arrears

A pet shop, which launched a £20,000 fundraising campaign to pay off rent arrears, has averted the threat of closure after agreeing a deal with its landlord.

A pet shop, which launched a £20,000 fundraising campaign to pay off rent arrears, has averted the threat of closure after agreeing a deal with its landlord.

Bristol Pet Shop started the online appeal in a last-ditch attempt to avoid eviction from its Gloucester Road North premises because of unpaid rent.

But owner Jade Brady announced this week that the shop’s immediate future was safe.

She said on the shop’s fundraising platform: “We have ended our GoFundMe and all donations have been refunded!

“We have now entered into a deal with the landlord so we can stay in the property.

“We are developing our online sales platforms and are hoping to convert as much of the shop as possible to the first zero waste refillable pet shop. We hope to improve plastic waste by offering an alternative!”

Jade had blamed poor trade for the cause of the shop falling behind on the rent.

Pet firms set fair to weather Brexit storms

Industry pundit and recruitment specialist Lynda Ward believes that UK pet companies are well placed to weather any forthcoming storms caused by Brexit...

Industry pundit and recruitment specialist Lynda Ward believes that UK pet companies are well placed to weather any forthcoming storms caused by Brexit.

Lynda said: “Whilst recruiting for business of all sizes and for all levels of sales people I have had numerous conversations about Brexit since the result of the referendum and since most agree, ‘We just don’t know what will happen’, that very uncertainty has spurred them on to take action."

Lynda pointed out that some companies had battened down the hatches and taken steps to secure current business in the UK by increasing their attention to customer care and relationships and ensuring all staff are well trained and motivated plus streamlining their distribution systems and logistics.

Other businesses had taken a different pro-active approach by increasing their sales force in the UK and additionally strengthening or seeking to increase their overseas presence with countries outside Europe by employing sales personnel in key target areas.

"In both cases marketing is also playing a major role with manufacturers revamping packaging to stand out from the crowd, identifying niche product opportunities and ensuring their sales people have the best tools to excel in their roles," said Lynda.

“Having been in this industry through recessions and booms and knowing its people so well I am completely confident that our collective determination and tenacity will ensure continuing success.”

SQP training soon to be available online

New SQP regulator Vetpol has announced it will soon open for SQP training – most likely before the end February. The all-new course is delivered online, using a bespoke learning management platform and an integrated CPD system.

New SQP regulator Vetpol has announced it will soon open for SQP training – most likely before the end February.

It follows full approval by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate for Vetpol to become a regulator.

The all-new course is delivered online, using a bespoke learning management platform and an integrated CPD system.

It means that busy professionals and those in rural communities can easily access the course and study at a time and place that suits them. Future students or employers can register their interest or request further information now at www.vetpol.uk or by emailing caroline@vetpol.co.uk.

The Vetpol course has been designed to deliver a positive experience for its users, as SQP training is acknowledged to be challenging, with a lot of information to assimilate across a broad subject area. It uses the principles of reflective learning, with simple exercises to complete to help embed what is learned and highlighting of key facts to aid recall.

Caroline Johnson, Vetpol Founder and Director, says the team has thought long and hard about matching need and application while covering the day-one-competencies required for SQP registration.

“There is an increasing number of NFA-VPS medicines available alongside POM-VPS medicines and a growing need to broaden knowledge of companion animals, which we have reflected in the course content. In agriculture too, it has never been more challenging to deliver the kind of service that farmers and stock-keepers need in the 21st century – we have looked at this both from the farmer and outlet’s point of view and we have really addressed health and disease with this in mind.”

Vetpol will provide companion animal, farm, equine and avian training leading to a Level 4 SQP qualification. Level 4 qualifications are rated above A level (which is a level 3 qualification) and include NVQ Level 4, Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Certificates of Higher Education (CertHE).

The course writers have aimed to make sure the course contains information that is relevant, practical and necessary, building on a solid base of animal welfare and husbandry. Up to date knowledge about parasite distribution in the UK is included. Regular updates are also built into the schedule to ensure the course reflects current thinking and keeps pace with changes in medicines legislation.

As her background is in sales and sales training, especially in the veterinary medicines sector, Caroline has a keen focus on ensuring that SQPs have the knowledge they need to add value to customer and client transactions.

“We were especially keen when writing the online course to give SQPs the scope to apply their knowledge in practical day to day situations and to make excellent recommendations.”

The new regulator has gained support for its plans from several large businesses across the pet, agricultural and veterinary sector and looks forward to adding its first SQPs to the regulator’s register in 2020.

Pet humanisation and gifting continues to boost spending

The value of the UK pet products and services market is forecast to reach £7 billion by 2021 according to AMA Research, with British pet owners putting their animals’ contentment and happiness up there with their own...

With High Street spending declining, a downturn in employment and wages growth, as well as an imminent Brexit, you may think that the pet industry would also be suffering from cutbacks but instead it’s thriving as we enter the new decade.

The value of the UK pet products and services market is forecast to reach £7 billion by 2021 according to AMA Research, with British pet owners putting their animals’ contentment and happiness up there with their own.  Health and wellbeing will be the focus of the brand new Pawexpo, a new high-end pet-focused exhibition launching this September, supported by the team and co-located next to the annual Glee garden and outdoor living trade event (15th – 17th September, NEC Birmingham).

Designed with a wide range of pet retailers in mind – from traditional pet stores to garden centres, high street, independent gift store, and online to name but a few - Pawexpo will be the ultimate pet show experience putting pet care at the forefront of buyers’ minds and equipping them with the tools and knowledge to capitalise on this ever-growing industry sector.

Widespread ownership & pampering care

The most recent PDSA PAW Report revealed that 50% of UK adults own a pet and in 2019 it was estimated that there was a pet living in 12 million households.  A survey by MoreThan highlighted that pets have a positive influence on their owner’s lifestyle with 61% saying their pets make them feel happier and 55% offering real companionship.

The pet industry continues to boom with new companies entering the market with animal lovers treating their furry friends like members of their family.  This new wave, known as the ‘humanisation of domestic animals’, is fuelling rapid growth in this segment and will be instrumental in helping to drive growth for retailers who put a real focus on pet products in the year ahead.

Gifting for pets – a true profit opportunity for the retailers

Mintel research has revealed that 30% of millennial pet care owners (aged 19-38 years) like their pet to keep up with the latest trends through clothes and interior styling and these consumers would also spend just as much money on their pet at special events, such as Christmas or their birthday, as they would on a friend or family member.

Any retailer with a pet section can also boost sales in other categories such as gifting, with key periods such as Christmas and birthdays seeing owners lavish their animals with presents, as they would their own friends and relatives. Research shows as once in-store, pet owners will tend to spend more on add-ons such as treats and accessories.  Luxury pet hampers, orthopaedic animal beds with memory foam mattresses, sleeping bags and matching bowls have become luxury purchases as 66% of owners admit to buying gifts for their pet.

The craze for dressing up our pets also seems set to continue with owners spending, on average, nearly £200 a year on clothes.  Pet clothing couture has become fashionable in recent years with an increasing array of products on sale, from animal booties, coats, fancy dress costumes, tuxedos and hoodies for cats and dogs.  Easter and Halloween have seen a surge in sales as owners seek an adorable outfit for their pet – a glance at social media channels will demonstrate just how popular this trend has become - whilst Christmas has seen matching family pyjama sets including their canine and feline friends.

As our world becomes more automated, so do our pets with new and innovative products like fitness trackers and cameras that allow owners to watch, talk to, play and feed their pets.  Smartphone-controlled toys are also hitting the shelves to make looking after our animals easier with the touch of a button. Studies have shown that technology can affect a pet’s mental health, with mood and behaviour being improved with tools designed to encourage physical and mental stimulation, relaxation and engagement, especially in a time when working hours and commuting time continues to increase, meaning we are away from our pets more than ever.

Looking good

When it comes to other pet gifts and services, Mintel research shows that pet health check-ups (17%) and pet grooming (16%) lead the way. A trim blow dry with luxury shampoos, a freshen up with scented spritzes are now the norm with parlours and franchises appearing in retailers across the country. Animal lovers can also indulge their four-legged friends further with a range of massages, and even Pilates classes especially designed for them.   The popularity of grooming as a pamper treat, and the ongoing human habits and lifestyles that pets have adopted have resulted in a social media sensation with hashtags such as #PetsofInstagram flooding the platform as proud owners show off their furry, fluffy and feathered friends online.

Well-fed pets

The pet food industry is worth approximately £3 billion in the UK and the latest trend dominating the pet food scene is the imitation of human food. Premium pet food has become increasingly important for owners as an they splash out on both nutritional and indulgent foods for their pampered pooches. Where raw food once led the way, pet food manufacturers are now tapping into wider human trends including organic and the slightly more controversial, veganic, diet solutions hitting the shelves, providing more choice and a wider range of price points helping retailers to differentiate their offering.

Demand for craft pet food and delectable delights such as sausages, casseroles, artisan dog bakery treats, popcorn, ice lollies and even foie gras has grown significantly in recent years. This product category will also only soar further as owners become more educated about how much to feed their animals and perceive the nutritional needs of their pets in a similar light to their own.

Pet supplements – such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, meal supplements and other similar products - is also proving big business, with a recent TechNavio market research report stating that the UK market is currently valued at £100 million and is set to benefit from an annual growth projection of 7%. The reason for this is because pet owners are increasingly concerned about the health and comfort of their pets, in turn urging them to spend more on high-end food products and associated supplements and vitamins to increase their pets’ life expectancy and avoid age-associated problems. What’s more, veterinary endorsement of such supplements is driving demand as consumers buy into this professional support of such products.  Finally, the access to pet nutritional supplements is becoming increasingly easier, with supermarkets, vets, pet stores and online retailers all offering consumer solutions, in doing so are increasing the reach of this thriving product group.

Matthew Mein, Event Director said: “Pawexpo is a new event which puts pet care and wellbeing in the spotlight and is dedicated to showcasing the best of British and overseas pet suppliers. The event has been developed so retailers can capitalise on the increasing “pet-pound” trend. However, at Pawexpo we’ll be doing things a little differently. The show will not merely be about products for the sake of products, instead we’ll work closely with our exhibitors to develop a beautifully curated showcase of the latest innovations and bestselling products; products that will help drive sales and can be quickly added to store for instant impact that meets consumer demand.

“What’s more, Pawexpo is designed to offer a new sense of energy, creativity and business support that pet suppliers and retailers have been looking for. Pawexpo will create a real community, where suppliers and retailers can come together to grow their business together, as well as offering unrivalled networking and educational content. The show will also work to help suppliers to cut through the noise relating to key trends and influences, making it easier for them to optimise them within their own business. We’re excited about what the show can achieve for the pet product sector.”
