Vital offers lifeline to pet retailers following Budget

Vital Pet Group has launched a new Extended Credit Terms incentive running from today (Monday 2nd December) until Sunday (8th December 2024). All orders placed in the timeframe will qualify for extended credit terms and will not be due for payment until week commencing 13th January 2025...

In a bold move that reflects their commitment to delivering for customers, Vital Pet Group has launched a new Extended Credit Terms incentive running from today (Monday 2nd December) until Sunday (8th December 2024). All orders placed in the timeframe will qualify for extended credit terms and will not be due for payment until week commencing 13th January 2025.

The Budget, announced in October, sees retailers facing a significant jump in costs following a hike in both National Insurance and minimum wage unveiled by Chancellor Rachel Reeves’, the first by a Labour government in 14 years.

The industry is set to pay an additional £2.3bn in National Insurance when the increase in employer contributions comes into force in April next year.

BRC Chief Helen Dickinson said the hike was yet another case of piling taxes on an already overburdened industry – a decision which will reduce investment in shops and jobs”.

Whilst the Budget also plans to address business rates, this will not come into effect until 2026/27.

Vital wants to do what it can especially around Christmas time and offer a life raft to independent retailers facing these challenges.

Peter Brame, Group Trading Director, said: "Vital is committed to supporting the independent pet trade and are dedicated to going above and beyond especially in challenging times. We understand that with the recent new Budget, some of our customers might have concerns around cash flow, the busy Christmas period and what the New Year might bring. We hope that the scheme this week will be a support to our customers and are exceptionally proud of being able to offer it for both existing and new retailers."

Pets at Home has unveiled its newly designed flagship Pet Care Centre in New Malden – a game changing destination that sets a new gold standard for pet care.

This £2.2 million+ transformation marks the single largest investment in Pets at Home’s estate history and delivers a world class experience for pet owners and their beloved companions.

At an impressive 27,360 sq.ft, this cutting-edge centre offers a completely reimagined experience for pet owners.

Featuring an increased range of services (such as a newly refurbed and extended veterinary practice), premium facilities (such as a luxury Pets Grooming Salon with 50% more capacity) and thoughtful touches at every turn, it’s more than a store – it’s a one stop destination for animal lovers across New Malden and beyond.

Pets at Home’s impressive £25 million investment in estate interventions this year alone highlights its commitment to refurbishing, enhancing, and futureproofing its facilities.

The New Malden Pet Care Centre is a key example of this strategy, forming part of the company’s ambitious expansion programme. By opening new Pet Care Centres, modernising existing ones, and collaborating with veterinary practice owners, Pets at Home continues to deliver outstanding pet care services to communities nationwide.

To celebrate the new look Pet Care Centre, the Veterinary Practice Owner Michelle Akande and Store Manager, Bart Kemal, held a ribbon cutting ceremony and launch event on Friday (29th November). which continued into the weekend.

This new look flagship Pet Care Centre boasts a host of new features and innovative spaces tailored to meet the evolving needs of pets and their families:

UK Pet Food unveils new communications campaign

UK Pet Food has unveiled a new communications campaign, ‘Love Them Madly, Feed Them Wisely’, aimed at empowering pet owners to make well-informed choices about pet nutrition and to support vets and pet care professionals in their conversations with owners about nutrition.

The new initiative focuses on introducing more accessible, plain-speaking language into pet nutrition. It aims to remove the complexity around scientific terminology that can often be a barrier to people’s understanding of the best nutrition choices for their pets.

Designed to solidify UK Pet Food’s role as a trusted source in pet nutrition, the campaign introduces a suite of valuable resources, including an updated website, comprehensive factsheets and bespoke training materials for vets and professionals working across the pet food industry.

“Pets are family, and one of the best ways to show our love is by providing them with the right care and nutrition. Getting their diet right from the start helps set them up for long, healthy lives,” says Nicole Paley, Deputy CEO of UK Pet Food.

“Recent research highlights* that while 70% of pet owners believe commercially prepared pet food is superior to a homemade diet, 62% admit they don’t read or fully understand feeding guidelines. Additionally, 70% don’t understand what by-products are, with 22% finding the term ‘off-putting.’ Our new ‘Love Them Madly, Feed Them Wisely’ campaign seeks to close these knowledge gaps by providing clear, accessible information that builds confidence in pet food choices.”

Factsheets are available on a wide range of topics, including new guides, such as ‘The Benefits of Prepared Pet Food,’ ‘Understanding Pet Food Labelling,’ and ‘Understanding Feeding Guidelines.’

UK Pet Food has also updated key factsheets on topics like ‘Additives in Pet Food’ and ‘Explaining Animal By-Products,’ making it easier than ever for owners and those in the pet industry to find reliable, impartial information.

In the coming months, UK Pet Food will actively promote the campaign across social media as well as engaging directly with vets and the wider pet industry itself as well as through its network of over 100 members.

The campaign materials include 15 vet-led videos and engaging digital animations, created to help simplify complex nutrition topics.

UK Pet Food has worked with Cat Henstridge, also known as Cat the Vet, on the videos, which will be hosted on UK Pet Food’s website and Cat’s social media channels. Cat uses her expertise to help make essential topics like labelling, derivatives, and by-products more accessible and understandable for everyone in the free-to-access videos, which are 1-2 mins long.

Triple award-winning pet business for sale

Multi award-winning business Millin Brook Luxury Dog Boarding has been put on the market with an asking price of £1,999,950. The family-run luxury kennels in Pembrokeshire has picked up major honours at the PetQuip Awards, PIF Awards (pictured) and Dog Friendly Awards in 2024...

Multi award-winning business Millin Brook Luxury Dog Boarding has been put on the market with an asking price of £1,999,950.

The luxury kennels in Pembrokeshire has picked up major honours at the PetQuip Awards, PIF Awards and Dog Friendly Awards in 2024.

But it’s understood that owners Dave and Sian Smith have now put the business on the market due to ill health.

According to the sales literature of agents Kings Business, Millin Brook Luxury Dog Boarding has “an impressive annual income in excess of £190,000 per year with opportunity for further growth.”

The agents describe it as “one of the country’s most premium kennel businesses, boasting 10.8 acres of premium south-facing land, luxury amenities and a 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom family home.”

The business has 10 luxury kennels in a sought-after location.

It has been an incredible year for Millin Brook Luxury Dog Boarding, which has been recognised with three presitigous awards.

At the PetQuip Awards, Dave and Sian picked up the gold award in the Business Service of the Year category. The judges described their operation as “the ultimate in dog boarding. Guests spend the minimal amount of time in their suite, instead enjoying day trips, training, stimulating interaction and play.  This company has turned dog boarding on its head by instead focusing on delivering the ultimate doggie holiday – they even send a postcard from your pooch!”

Earlier this month the couple claimed the Kennel of the Year honour at the PIF Awards – their second win in three years – scoring very highly on their customer satisfaction scores.

Then, just last week, the success continued at the Dog Friendly Awards where Millin Brook won the Kennel and Home Boarding category.

Pets at Home ‘outperforms’ subdued market

Pets at Home claims the group was still outperforming in a subdued market despite cutting its profit expectations...

Pets at Home claims the group was still outperforming in a subdued market despite cutting its profit expectations.

In its interim results for the 28 weeks ending October 10, the group reported revenue growth of 1.9% to £789.1m, with strong performance in its veterinary business offsetting slower retail sales. Underlying profit of £54.5m was up 14% on the previous year.

Lyssa McGowan, Pets at Home CEO said: “The first half of FY25 was characterised by a subdued market, against which we outperformed. In Vets, our differentiated joint venture model continues to drive material outperformance over peers. In Retail, our customer satisfaction is excellent, our price position is strong, and we have tight control of our cost base.

“We have a clear and consistent strategy to unlock value and H1(first half of financial year) has seen further progress against this.

·

“The launch of our new digital platform has seen app sales almost double – a key enabler of even greater engagement with consumers. We have now moved through the transitionary impacts that impacted web sales in H1 and see significant opportunities to win incremental, profitable sales in digital.

“Our Stafford distribution centre is performing well, supporting near record availability in stores, and we will unlock efficiency savings through automation in e-commerce into next year.

“Our stores remain a clear competitive advantage giving us unrivalled presence and bringing the passion and expertise of our store colleagues to a nation of pet lovers. We continue to invest to improve our presence with 3 new stores and 14 refits in H1.

“However, we are operating in an unusually subdued pet retail market which we now expect to continue through H2 (second half). We are confident this will be temporary, and growth will return to historical norms with the longer-term attractive outlook for the UK pet care market unchanged.

“The bulk of our investments and peak operational risk are behind us and our market leadership and well invested platform underpin our confidence in continued outperformance.”

Financial highlights

  • The company delivered growth in Pets Club members of 3%, to 8.1m consumers, supported by the relaunch of Pets Club on our new digital platform. Vet Group new pet registrations remained robust at 18k sign-ups a week.
  • Total Group revenue growth of 1.9% to £789.1m, with Group like-for-like (LFL) revenue up 1.6%.
  • Vet Group revenue growth remained strong at 18.6% with LFL of 18.2%, with our practices delivering double digit revenue growth supported by growth in subscriptions, visits, and average transaction values.
  • Retail revenue growth of 0.1% with flat LFL. A resilient performance against a declining retail market and with the previously flagged impact of our new digital platform transition.
  • Consumer revenue up 4.1% to £1,048.6m reflecting a subdued market with our Retail and Vet Group delivering outperformance against their respective channels.
  • Group Gross Margin of 46.3% flat YoY due to an increased contribution from Vet Group and higher Vet Group gross margins, offsetting Retail gross margins down 31bps due to adverse mix.
  • Group Net operating costs were down 3.5% driven by lower non-underlying costs alongside good cost control and productivity measures offsetting cost inflation (primarily National Living Wage). On an underlying basis costs were down 0.5%, with underlying opex to sales ratio improving 93bps.
  • Statutory PBT of £51.1m increased 47.3% reflecting solid underlying profit growth within the Vet Group (+£11.3m). Retail (+£9.3m) mainly driven by a significant reduction in non-underlying costs.
  • Underlying PBT# of £54.5m was up 14.1% on last year supported by the strong growth in our Vet Group, with Retail impacted by the slower sales growth.
  • Statutory earnings per share (EPS) was 7.9p up 51.9% with underlying EPS# of 8.4p, up 13.5%.
  • Pets at Home have declared an interim dividend per share of 4.7p, up 4.4% on last year. This is consistent with our progressive dividend policy, targeting a 50% payout ratio over the medium term.
  • Free cash flow# up 43.3% to £33.1m, representing 61% conversion of underlying PBT#. This reflects the step up in cash profits, lower non-underlying costs and lower share purchases linked to our employee benefit trust (EBT).
  • Balance sheet remains robust with adjusted net debt# of £8.3m (before lease liabilities of £364.7m). Cash and cash equivalents was £40.0m at the end of H1.
  • Current trading and outlook
  • Our H1 performance shows the resilience in our model and our proven ability to outperform our markets, winning share in both Retail and, particularly strongly, in Vets. However, pet retail market growth has been subdued for longer than we anticipated as consumers have remained cautious in recent months.
  • The company now plan for current rates of market growth to persist through the remainder of this year, lower than initially planned. As such, we now expect underlying PBT# for FY25 to grow modestly from last year.
  • The lower profit outlook for FY25 is mitigated at free cash flow# level as we continue to look for ways to make our investment plans more efficient and we now expect capex of c£55m for FY25.
  • We are confident we have made the right investments building the capability to deliver attractive growth and returns for shareholders in the future, and do not believe it would be in shareholder interests to compromise this by stretching for short term profits now at longer term cost.
  • Periods of slower pet market growth are not unprecedented but are historically short-lived and we are confident that market growth will improve in future, supported by long established and unchanged structural growth trends and a stable but higher pet population. As growth returns to historical long-term averages of c4% (c3% Retail and c5% Vets) in future we would expect to deliver revenue and profit growth in line with our medium-term ambition.
  • In the October Budget, the government announced planned changes to the National Living Wage and employers National Insurance Contributions. Combined these changes represent a £18m cost increase for our business in FY26. We will continue to proactively mitigate these cost increases where possible, including through our ongoing productivity programmes and investments in automation.

5 steps to running an ethical pet care business

Kevin Thackrah, Director of Petpals, sheds light on why ethics are vital in pet care and outlines five actionable steps to help business owners and pet care professionals make ethical values a daily priority...

Working in pet care often conjures up visions of wagging tails, playful kittens and those heartwarming moments shared between people and their pets. But behind the cuteness lies a serious responsibility – the duty to ensure that every animal is treated with respect, compassion and an unwavering commitment to its welfare. When ethics drive the heart of a pet care business, trust grows, reputations strengthen and animals and communities alike benefit.

Here, Kevin Thackrah, Director of Petpals, sheds light on why ethics are vital in pet care and outlines five actionable steps to help business owners and pet care professionals make ethical values a daily priority.

Why an ethical approach matters

An ethical approach brings lasting value to a pet care business in two key ways. First, it builds trust with clients, who want the reassurance that their pets are in reliable, caring hands. Second, ethical practices lay down a strong business foundation, reducing risks and creating a positive work environment. While it might seem like a big commitment at first, adopting ethical practices is what helps business owners develop a sustainable, reputable business that pet owners can rely on.

Here are five key steps to help bring ethics to the forefront of your pet care business.

1. Prioritise training and certification

Every pet, like every person, has unique needs. Meeting those needs requires continuous learning. Ongoing education keeps your team informed on the latest techniques in animal behaviour, health and safety. And while many staff members may have experience as pet owners, professional pet care often introduces them to entirely new challenges – like managing specific health concerns or understanding complex behaviours.

Regular, up-to-date training builds a team capable of handling any situation, from ensuring a shy dog feels comfortable to safely transporting an anxious cat. When clients know that you prioritise training, they are reassured that their pets are in capable, skilled hands, making them more likely to trust and return to your business.

2. Build a culture of health and safety

At the heart of ethical pet care is a commitment to health and safety – not just for the pets but for everyone involved. An ethical pet care business embraces this by fostering a proactive safety culture, where guidelines are consistently upheld, and every team member understands the importance of each protocol.

Creating this culture means focusing on everything from proper sanitation and hazard management to emergency response preparation. Simple practices, like regular cleaning of pet areas and detailed safety protocols, ensure that pets can interact, exercise and rest in a secure environment. This vigilance not only protects animals but also reassures pet owners and strengthens the ethical foundation of the business.

3. Keep pet owners in the know

Transparency is a powerful tool in pet care. When clients hand over their furry family members, they need more than a “pick-up at five” promise. Regular updates, whether through daily report cards, videos, or even brief calls, build lasting trust and allow pet owners to feel connected to their pet’s experience.

Transparency helps ease client anxieties and gives them confidence in your services, especially when their pets have unique needs or preferences. Regular communication also encourages feedback, giving clients a space to share instructions or concerns, ensuring that every pet receives truly personalised care.

4. Stay in step with industry standards

The pet care industry evolves constantly, from new insights in animal health and behaviour to legislative changes that raise the bar for welfare standards. With recent reports of animal incidents making headlines and a growing push for stronger legislation across the UK, it is more important than ever to show that your business operates to the highest standards.

An ethical pet care business makes it a point to stay on top of these developments, adapting policies and practices to reflect the highest level of care, so owners have peace of mind knowing their pets are safe.

5. Be a force for good in your community

Ethical pet care businesses thrive by embedding themselves in their communities – but true leadership goes beyond simply giving back. While initiatives like supporting local shelters or organising pet care workshops are fantastic ways to make an impact locally, there is also a unique opportunity to set an example in the broader business community. By championing high standards in pet welfare, you are not only earning respect from clients but also inspiring other pet care providers to raise their standards, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the industry.

When business owners actively lead on ethical practices, they set a high benchmark for responsible pet care, sending a clear message that quality care is achievable and essential. This dual commitment – to your local area and the larger business landscape – strengthens the overall reputation of the pet care industry and reassures pet owners that their pets are in trustworthy hands.

As one of the founding members of the Pet Care Franchise Association (PCFA), Petpals has made it a priority to lead the charge in raising industry standards across the board. The PCFA unites franchises that are committed to upholding the highest ethical values, ensuring that member businesses follow strict guidelines designed to protect pets and build client trust. Being part of this association means that Petpals franchisees gain access to a network of like-minded professionals, where resources, guidance and best practices for ethical pet care are shared and continuously refined.

“When clients know a franchise is part of the PCFA, they have an added layer of confidence that the business is meeting high standards,” says Kevin. “It’s all about creating a safe, reliable environment for pets and clients – something that we’re proud to lead and uphold.”

PIF focuses on wellbeing of small business owners

The Pet Industry Federation has underlined its commitment to helping its smallest members, through its new Small Business Support membership tier, which aims to support not just the business, but also the personal wellbeing of their owners.

PIF recognises that business owners often invest everything into their businesses, frequently at the expense of their own health and well-being. Stress and burnout are real challenges, and PIF is keen to help small business owners take care of themselves.

The programme includes a range of personal benefits, such as:

  • 24/7 access to a telephone and online GP service
  • 24/7 counselling and mental health service
  • Virtual physiotherapy
  • Virtual gym and discounted gym membership
  • Money and credit score advice
  • Shopping discounts on essentials like groceries, travel, and insurance

Nigel Baker, PIF chief executive, said: "Small businesses face unique challenges—juggling tight budgets, managing stress, and staying competitive in a fast-changing market. PIF’s Small Business Support membership tier is specifically designed for businesses with a turnover of under £250k, offering affordable, practical, and personalised support to make it easier for business owners to prioritise their personal health and financial well-being. A healthy business starts with a healthy owner and we believe PIF membership has a role in assisting members’ overall well-being and business success.”

Jollyes set to open two new stores this weekend

Award-winning retail group Jollyes is set to open its next two stores on Saturday – one in Scotland and the other in Wales...

Award-winning retail group Jollyes is set to open its next two stores on Saturday – one in Scotland and the other in Wales.

They will be at Kingsgate Retail Park, Glasgow Road, East Kilbride, G77 4UN and at City Link Retail Park, Newport Road in Cardiff, CF24 1PQ.

Both locations will provide pet parents access to Jollyes’ raw food frozen ‘shop-in-shop’ and later this year, community pet clinics at each store will offer unbeatable prices for essential vet services such as microchipping and vaccinations.

At each of the openings, retired service animals supported in their later years by the National Federation of Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) will bite through strings of sausages to formally declare the stores open.

A key charity partner for Jollyes, NFRSA helps support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family – the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.

Over the next 12 months, all Jollyes’ stores will be raising money for NFRSA with collections matched by Jollyes up to £20,000 that will help NFRSA support retired service animals and their owners.

Joe Wykes, Jollyes chief executive officer ,said: “Whenever we open a new store we make a promise to be the best value in town for all the items a pet parent needs.

“We can only make that promise because we work super hard, day-in, day-out to lower our own costs and carefully check prices elsewhere.

“And while we know price is paramount, we also know what makes Jollyes special is the service and expertise our people deliver in store.

“We look forward to showing new shoppers in East Kilbride and Cardiff what Jollyes is all about as they deliver the kind of savings that we already offer in over 100 other communities right across the UK.”

At East Kilbride on Saturday, accompanied by a St Andrews day piper, the store will be opened by Corrie, an Alsatian who served for six years with Police Scotland until retirement.

On the same day at Newport Road in Cardiff, the new Jollyes store will be officially launched by Ella, a seven-year-old cocker spaniel.  Ella served as an explosives search dog for six years with South Wales Police before retirement, carrying out searches at many venues such as the Principality stadium, Welsh Assembly and Senydd.

The pedalling prowess of tenacious team members at WHM Pet Group has raised £1,400 for Barnardo’s, with a 200-mile cycle ride from Essex to Yorkshire.

Three of WHM Pet Group’s team signed up for the whole ride as a part of the pet food manufacturer’s heritage party last month, celebrating 200 years of family, food and farming, and the relaunch of WHM Pet Group's pet food brand Marriage’s.

The cyclists rode from Broomfield Mill in Essex, where the family business was founded in 1824, to Yorkshire, where WHM Pet Group now has headquarters in Holme Upon Spalding Moor, East Yorkshire.

There were eight legs to the challenge, running over three days. The riders raised a total of £600 via sponsorship and WHM Pet Group matched it and more, to present a total of £1,401.00 for Barnardo’s, a charity that works hard for children and young people to be safe, happy, healthy and hopeful.

“We are proud of our team for raising such an impressive amount for Barnardo’s and are delighted to have been able to add to their total,” said Sam Marriage, Managing Director of WHM Pet Group.

“Barnardo’s has been changing childhoods and changing lives for over 150 years and it seems very fitting that as we celebrate the business successfully passing through the generations, we are able to show our support for future generations.”

WHM Pet Group supply retailers and farmers with premium quality wild bird, indoor bird, small animal, racing pigeon, pig, poultry and ruminant feeds.

Evolving the joint care category with new Beaphar Flexifit

Beaphar has evolved its range of joint care products with the launch of Flexifit, a new range of joint supplements specially formulated to support the joint health of dogs and cats at all life stages...

Beaphar has evolved its range of joint care products with the launch of Flexifit, a new range of joint supplements specially formulated to support the joint health of dogs and cats at all life stages.

The range is divided into three easy-to-understand levels, tailored to the pet’s degree of mobility and needs. This affordable range of tasty joint supplements caters for dogs and cats with good mobility to those needing additional joint support.

Level one products, Flexifit Treats for dogs and Flexifit Bits for cats are delicious daily joint supplement treats for the maintenance of healthy joints. Containing Glucosamine, Omega 3 and Vitamin C, these treats and bits are formulated to help cats and dogs continue enjoying active lives.

The level two product, Flexifit Paste, is an advanced daily joint supplement paste for dogs and cats who are starting to show signs of stiffness or reduced mobility. The tasty paste can be mixed with food or given directly and helps soothe stiff joints and support joint structure to maintain joint mobility.

The level three product, Flexifit Chews, are formulated for dogs with reduced mobility that need optimum support. Flexifit Chews are an easy to give, one a day chew for all dog sizes and contain the innovative ingredient UC-II® in addition to Glucosamine, Omega 3 and Vitamins C and E. Undenatured Type II Collagen (UC-II) has a unique mode of action compared to commonly used joint supplements. UC-II® is able to activate the immune system to help soothe, comfort and support joint structure.

Joint problems in dogs and cats can develop at any age and in any breed. Young, active pets can be prone to joint injuries and developmental diseases, and degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis are common in older pets. Studies have shown that 40 percent of dogs over four years of age exhibit signs of arthritis on x-ray, a number that rises to 80 percent in dogs over eight, and ninety percent of cats over 12 are affected too. This means joint health is a key concern for owners and a key category for retailers.

Additionally, the global pet supplement market is expected to grow by 5.9% between 2023 and 2030, and joint support products have the largest revenue share (58%), presenting a prime opportunity for retailers to help many shopper needs. Recent Beaphar research though, has found that pet owners can find shopping the category problematic, with a quarter stating that they were concerned about the cost, and 24% saying they found selecting the right product confusing.

“Pet retailers have a great opportunity to advise owners and maximise the category opportunity,” says Claire Edmunds, Beaphar Marketing Manager. “The step-by-step approach of the Flexifit range means it’s easy for pet owners to understand which product is appropriate for their pet, and its competitive pricing means it’s affordable for owners to support their pets’ joint health and mobility throughout their life.”

A national awareness campaign aimed at helping pet owners learn more about joint health and care will support the launch.  An interactive quiz has been developed to help owners identify their pets’ joint care needs, choose the correct Flexifit product, provide feedback and even participate in competitions. An ongoing series of emails and articles on joint health, plus a wealth of social media and online resources will help to educate many pet owners on their furry friends’ needs, explain the solutions the Flexifit range can offer and let them know where they can buy the products.

Plenty of support is also on offer for Beaphar Flexifit retailers too.  Retailers will have the opportunity to receive regular joint health updates, with valuable articles and resources to share with their customers. A range of online and offline resources are also available, including instore merchandising and point of sale material, ready-made social media and website content, product descriptions, pack shots and supporting images to enhance online product listings. Additionally, the Beaphar Training Academy  https://www.beaphar-training.co.uk/ offers all staff accredited training to improve knowledge of joints and joint supplements.

Claire continues: “We’re really excited about how the Beaphar Flexifit range can help evolve the joint care category with year-round product sales through all lifestages for both cats and dogs, providing joint support for every pet.”

Eco-conscious wellness and lifestyle brand DotDotPet has held a special event for social media influencers, groomers and retailers at The Ministry in London.

The event was held in partnership with Yap Yap, which is London’s largest social and networking community group for dog owners and their dogs who meet up for adventures and friendships and lots of wagging tails.

The group was initially started as a WhatsApp chat group but expanded during Covid to become a network of social gathering groups for dog owners who meet up at social events across the city.

The event was designed to promote DotDotPet’s range of Calming Shampoos and Conditioner which contain Shine Bright, their own signature scent designed to keep a dog calm during bathtimes helping to avoid the zoomies. Each variety in the range has been specially formulated to deal with different types of coat. The Ministry for Sound was transformed into The Ministry of Scent as guests were invited to test the products and were given goody bags of samples to take away with them and then promote on their social media pages.

The theme of the event was how to keep dogs nice and calm and guests were given demonstrations and tips from leading experts on different methods of doing so from doggy massages to pet accessories that alert people to anxious dogs from the My Anxious Dog company. Guests were also treated to some fun activities and food and drink.

Company founder Harry Chapman has had a busy year exhibiting at major exhibitions around the world, including Cosmoprof in Bologna in Italy, Interzoo and Pet Innovation in Berlin where he was nominated for an award. He has also attended numerous pet and dog shows around the UK. All this hard work has now paid dividends as DotDotPet Products can now be purchased all over the globe.

Helping to eliminate risk of attacks on postal workers

The Dog G8 Company is urging pet owners to take care during the festive season to help eliminate the risk of dog attacks on postal and delivery workers.

The Dog G8 Company is urging pet owners to take care during the festive season to help eliminate the risk of dog attacks on postal and delivery workers.

This advice comes on the back of a Royal Mail direct mail campaign aimed at all UK households this Christmas. One crucial piece of advice is to install safety gates at the front door, and internally if possible, to prevent dog escapes.

For the past few years The Dog G8 Company has been conducting collaborative research with the University of Liverpool and developing products to prevent dog attacks at the front door.

Even the most docile dog can lash out when feeling frightened, startled, hurt, confused or provoked, leading to a nightmare scenario for the injured party, the pet parent and their canine companion.

There have been more than 2,026 dog attacks on postmen and women across the UK over the last 12 months, an increase of 15% from the previous year.

Chris Maxted, director of Dog G8, said: “The public need to be aware that if their dog attacks a postal worker, they will be prosecuted either by the police, local authority or Royal Mail. Police forces around the UK have also launched the LEAD (Local, Environmental, Awareness on Dogs) campaign which encourages the responsible ownership of all dog breeds – with the aim of improving public safety, reducing anti-social behaviour and ensuring dogs are looked after appropriately.”

The Dog-G8 Company has created a range of highly versatile, concertina gates that aid dog owners with training, prevent dogs from escaping, and reduce the potential risk of an attack on postal and delivery workers coming to the house. The company’s products are patented and it is the only UK company to provide a safety gate that works on the front door.

Since launch the company has seen massive growth and now sells directly to customer in the UK, Canada, United States, and Europe. The product went viral on Tiktok and Facebook attracting over 100 million organic views across all videos. The Dog-G8 Company was the Theo Paphitis' Small Business Sunday Winner in March 2021 and last year was a Silver Award winner for innovation at the PetQuip Awards.

The gates are available to buy directly from www.dog-g8.com

Prices start from £62.95 for a standard gate and come with a range of accessories, extensions and brackets.

Dr Veneta introduces wellness variant to pioneering range

Kent-based Dr Veneta has added a wellness variant – STAY WELL – to its four-strong portfolio of freeze-dried feasts for discerning dogs. The new product is available now in the run up to Christmas...

Kent-based Dr Veneta has added a wellness variant – STAY WELL – to its four-strong portfolio of freeze-dried feasts for discerning dogs. The new addition offers a minimum of 80% meat (chicken and rabbit) and a generous smattering of beneficial fruit (apple and pumpkin).

The original Dr Veneta range, launched back in the Summer of 2024, was tasked with tackling the ‘too often overlooked’ fact that with today’s dogs now living longer than ever, it’s increasingly important that modern dog foods provide access to minimally processed meats, herbs, fruits and botanicals in easy-to-use, freeze-dried pellets.

As a long-standing vet and accomplished canine nutritionist who advises countless pet producers about the nutritional make-up of their mass-market dog foods, Dr Veneta Kozhuharova  is only too aware how the festive season can unintentionally wreak havoc on a dog’s delicate stomach on account of unwise titbits, excessive under the table gifting and shameless carpet hoovering.

Over the years Veneta’s award-winning Kent practice has been littered with tales of overweight dogs in dangerously poor health on account of poor diet choices, excessive treat provision or a worrying lack of awareness amongst uneducated dog owners with regards what their pet’s ideal weight should be.

Whilst the long-standing trend of ‘pet humanisation’ has certainly played a key role in too many four-legged friends eating over-processed, sugar & salt riddled treats, a more worrying big trend is the growing legions of mass-market kibbles made with low-grade meats, nutritionally bereft fillers and various artificial nasties, whose heat-based production means already nutritionally arid meals are weakened even further.

This unfortunate truth was a key driver as to why Veneta chose this Autumn to add STAY WELL to the range.

“When you’ve had an award-winning veterinary practice as long as I have,” said Veneta Kozhuharova “it becomes disheartening to see week after week the numbers of clinically obese dogs arriving at our surgery.

“Whether we’re talking overfed and under exercised big dogs or needlessly finicky smaller dogs who have somehow convinced their unwitting human owners that they can only eat unduly rich or calorific human food, the fact remains that British dogs need urgent help.”

STAY WELL is available now in the run up to Christmas.

Prolific shoplifter banned from Just for Pets stores

A prolific shoplifter who entered Worcestershire to target Just for Pets stores has been handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO)...

A prolific shoplifter who entered Worcestershire to target pet shops has been handed a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

David Powell, 41, of Maryland Drive, Birmingham, was given the CBO at Kidderminster Magistrates Court, banning him from the Just for Pets store chain nationally.

Powell is also barred from entering the county of Worcestershire unless attending court or travelling through in a vehicle.

His CBO runs until 18 November 2026.

Powell’s shoplifting spree saw him targeting stores in Evesham, Bromsgrove and Redditch.

Safer Neighbourhood Inspector for Wychavon, Dave Wise, said: “Powell’s prolific shoplifting has led to this two-year CBO which we hope will protect retailers and the public from further criminality from this individual.

“Powell had been coming into Worcestershire to commit his crimes so we hope his ban from the county will reassure businesses and the community that we take such offences very seriously and will take appropriate action where necessary.

“Anyone who sees Powell in the county or committing a crime should report it to police as soon as possible.”

Oh So Precious business adds to sales team

The Lovely Gift Group has expanded the sales team with the appointment of two industry specialists who will be working to develop sales for the firm’s two own label keepsake brands, ‘Oh So Precious’ and ‘Angel, Wings and Feathers’...

The Lovely Gift Group has expanded the sales team with the appointment of two industry specialists who will be working to develop sales for the firm’s two own label keepsake brands, ‘Oh So Precious’ and ‘Angel, Wings and Feathers’.

Both hailing from East Yorkshire within 15 minutes drive time of the company’s headquarters in Newport, Louise Bielby and Karli Petch have been appointed to bring their experience in the gift and garden centre markets, and the petcare industry, respectively.

Helen Davies, founder of The Lovely Gift Group, said: “For the continued growth of these brands, it was imperative we boosted the sales team with experts in our target markets.  To find such experience on our doorstep was an added bonus and I’m thrilled that both Louise and Karli have settled into their new roles and made an impact immediately.”

Louise Bielby, of Walkington, has extensive sales management experience having previously held roles in both the garden centre and gift industries. She was in regional sales for Forest Garden Group and Grange Fencing with previous roles at Boxer Gifts, Heineken and LEGO.

Karli Petch, of Market Weighton, joins the team whilst continuing to run her successful petcare business DotDot, currently employing 28 walkers caring for 1000+ dogs as well as offering homeboarding, small animal care and the Central Bark dog field.  Karli has previously held positions at Walker Modular and Bankside Patterson.

Louise commented: “Working with these new brands, that are creating their own categories in target markets, is a wonderful new challenge but one that has already been extremely rewarding.  Having innovative product ranges, that buyers are readily viewing and trying, is a breath of fresh air and I’m looking forward to rolling out both brands and sales initiatives further next year.”

Karli said: “As a fellow pet lover and owner, I see the value in honouring our four legged children, as much as our two legged.  I also feel well placed to understand the joy and challenges of running a pet care business, so I’m confident when introducing this new pet keepsake range, that it will enhance our customers’ offer, whether they are a retailer or service provider.  Personally too, promoting the Oh So Precious affiliate scheme, allows me to continue my passion for working with and helping pet care charities and rescue centres.”

Helen continued: “It is a business milestone for me to be in a position to appoint sales managers to really drives these two brands forwards.  Already they are visible at Central England Co-operative, B&Q, Pets at Home, The Range, Klondyke Strikes and Blue Diamond Garden centres as well as number of other online retailers and independents. Both brands deserve the additional attention and we have much more coming in 2025.”

Vet charity treats 3,700 pets injured in traffic accidents every year

With winter being the most common time of year for road traffic accidents involving pets, a national vet charity is urging owners to be aware of the dangers that vehicles and traffic can pose.

To help safeguard pets as the evenings become increasingly darker and the likelihood of road hazards increases, PDSA, the national vet charity for pets in need, along with PDSA Pet Insurance, has shared three essential tips to safeguard your furry friend.

PDSA Vet Nurse Gemma Renwick said: “Each year, PDSA treats around 3,700 pets that have been involved in road traffic accidents – costing the charity potentially over £1million every year. Whilst a winter walk offers an essential opportunity for you and your pet to enjoy fresh air and exercise, it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers of dark and busy roads.

“Should the worst happen and a pet is seriously injured in a road traffic accident , it could cost pet owners thousands of pounds if specialist or intensive veterinary care is needed to save them – so I’d always recommend owners plan ahead and take out a pet insurance policy to help cover the cost of any unexpected veterinary treatment.

1. Be visible

“Preparedness and visibility are crucial, especially in the low light conditions at this time of year. Make sure your dog is microchipped and wears a collar with up-to-date identification details – not only is it a legal requirement but preparing in this way will help keep your pet safe.

“Whilst it’s always better to walk dogs in daylight, it isn’t always possible during winter months – so make sure drivers can see both you and your pet clearly. Wearing bright-coloured clothing or even a high visibility jacket will help drivers spot you, whilst an LED collar or high visibility dog coat will ensure your furry friend can be seen.

“Reflective collars may make it easier for drivers to spot cats when they’re exploring near roads, but make sure it’s a ‘quick release’ type so they can’t get caught anywhere. Better still, keep your cat indoors at night and only let them out during daylight hours to help them stay safe. To encourage your cat to do this, try feeding them as it begins to get dark — they will get used to the schedule and return home for food before nightfall. To help them to be happy staying indoors overnight, provide them with plenty of sleeping places, toys and scratch posts. And don’t forget their litter tray!

2. Plan and prepare

“Whilst you won’t be able to teach your canine companion to look left and right, you can use simple commands to help keep them safe. When approaching a road with your dog on a lead, first ask them to ‘sit’ and ‘wait’. Once your dog is sat calmly and you’re happy the road is clear, give the command to ‘walk’ and cross together carefully. This way, your dog will learn to automatically sit and wait for your command before crossing any road.

“When planning your walking route, avoid high-speed, busy roads without pavements and use pedestrian crossings whenever possible. If you find it difficult to cross a road safely, consider returning by the same route you came.

3. Lead by example

“At any time of year, you should avoid using extender leads near roads, as they don’t provide the necessary control to keep your dog safe. A short, strong lead attached to a well-fitted collar or harness is much better and will prevent your pet from suddenly dashing off. Whilst your pet may be well-behaved, never let them off the lead near roads, as accidents with vehicles can happen in an instant.

“Sticking to these tips will help keep your beloved pets safe from the dangers of roads and traffic – as well as avoiding any unexpected veterinary costs. Remember, a little preparation and training can go a long way in ensuring that your walks are safe and enjoyable for both you and your furry friend.”

PDSA’s insurance partner, PDSA Pet Insurance, offers a range of policies to cover cats and dogs for accidents and illness, as well as providing access to a 24/7 veterinary helpline. Every policy sold raises funds for the charity’s life-saving veterinary work.

Independent retailers boycott Black Friday

Seven in 10 independent retailers across the UK are boycotting Black Friday this year, as rising operational costs and economic pressures continue to impact small businesses, according to the latest survey from Bira...

Seven in 10 independent retailers across the UK are boycotting Black Friday this year, as rising operational costs and economic pressures continue to impact small businesses, according to the latest survey from the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira).

The annual survey reveals that 70.5% of independent retailers are refusing to participate in the pre-Christmas sales event, continuing a strong trend of resistance seen over the past four years. In 2021, 85.5% boycotted the event, followed by 86.8% in 2022, and 86.6% in 2023. This year's figures show that while some retailers are testing the waters with Black Friday promotions, the majority remain steadfast in their opposition.

The survey also highlighted growing concerns about Black Friday's impact on independent retail, with 75.4% believing it negatively affects the high street—a significant increase from 68.8% last year.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of Bira, said: "Our survey demonstrates that independent retailers are taking a strong stance against Black Friday discounting during these challenging economic times. With increased staffing costs and squeezed margins, many of our members are already operating on tight margins while offering competitive prices year-round. The pressure to slash prices further during Black Friday simply isn't viable for small businesses."

Retailers across the country shared their experiences and concerns about the impact of Black Friday. "Bike shops now go quiet in October and November because of Black Friday with an expectation of heavy discounting," reported one retailer, while another observed, "I suspect overall the industry will be flat on sales, with Black Friday simply causing a pause in sales in October and a reduction in December."

The pressure on brick-and-mortar stores was particularly evident, with one retailer saying: "As a bricks and mortar retailer, we get lots of consumers looking and choosing products but not purchasing. I believe they purchase them elsewhere on Black Friday."

The recent autumn budget has added to retailers' concerns, with one commenting: "It has just made everything worse. Simply can't afford to cut margins that are desperately needed to cover the extra expenses."

Despite these additional pressures, 87.7% of retailers maintained their position that the autumn statement hasn't made them think differently about Black Friday.

"UK B2B price restrictions and tiered pricing dependent on volume hurt the consumer and smaller retailers, Black Friday just amplifies the effect," explained another retailer, highlighting the structural challenges faced by independent businesses.

Mr Goodacre said: "Independent retailers are the backbone of our high streets. Rather than competing in an unsustainable race to the bottom on pricing, especially during these economically challenging times, our members focus on providing quality products, exceptional service, and genuine value throughout the year. We encourage shoppers to support these local businesses that contribute so much to our communities."

Jollyes, which has more than 100 stores nationwide, is reducing its prices on top-selling items in a move to underline its position as the ‘UK’s best value pet superstore’.

The retail group claims the basket price of the bestselling products for cats and dogs will be over 10% better value than the market leader, when adding in every Pet Club members’ till discount.

And to drive home the message about savings, Jollyes today began sharing news about its savings on advertising vehicles in some of the 60 locations where it completes directly against Pets at Hoime.

It has also launched a national radio campaign to raise awareness of Jollyes’ value and the pet expertise of its colleagues.

The move to lower prices is the first significant investment in value after Jollyes was acquired by TDR Capital earlier in the year – and is part of foundational changes underway as Jollyes prepares for major store expansion in 2025 and beyond.

The pet superstore has already grown its store estate by almost 50% in the last three years and is now opening three additional stores over two weeks.

The first to open last week was in Leyland, Lancashire. The next two new stores will be launched on Saturday (30 November), at Kingsgate Retail Park, Glasgow Road, East Kilbride, G77 4UN and at City Link Retail Park, Newport Road in Cardiff, CF24 1PQ.

UK pet industry writes to Chancellor over Budget concerns

The Pet Industry Federation has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, this week to express significant concerns about the recent Budget and its potential negative effects on the pet industry and pet ownership.

The UK pet industry, a £7 billion sector, supports millions of pet owners and local businesses. However, a recent survey by PIF revealed that 76% of respondents believe the Budget is harmful to the economy, with 68% fearing job losses and 70% expecting to raise prices due to increased costs.

PIF’s concerns focus on the rising costs from higher wages, National Insurance contributions, and inflation. These increases are likely to lead to higher prices, affecting affordability for consumers and threatening the viability of small, innovative retailers and manufacturers. The rising costs of pet care will make it harder for families to afford pets and could increase pet relinquishments as a result. A decline in pet ownership would impact all pet businesses – from pet groomers, daycares, kennels and catteries, as well as retailers and manufacturers.

Nigel Baker, PIF CEO, said: "Pets bring substantial health and social benefits, including easing the strain on the NHS, with studies suggesting pet ownership could save the NHS up to £2.45 billion annually. However, our recent survey highlights how the Budget may inadvertently raise the cost of pet ownership. During the recent cost-of-living crisis, many pet owners found it increasingly difficult to afford essentials like pet food, and this financial pressure is likely to return. This could force some owners into the heartbreaking position of surrendering their pets to rehoming centres, placing additional strain on already overstretched animal welfare organisations and potentially leading to a decline in pet ownership. This, in turn, would have significant consequences for the wider pet industry.

“We have asked the Treasury to consider targeted relief for the pet industry to alleviate financial pressures to ensure the industry's resilience and the continued accessibility of quality pet care products for UK pet owners.”
