Award-winning retailer reveals secrets of success

Derby-based Trusty Pet Supplies has been named UK Pet Retailer of the Year in the prestigious PetQuip Industry Awards 2024. Director Hannah Edmondson reveals the secrets of her company’s success.

Derby-based Trusty Pet Supplies has been named UK Pet Retailer of the Year in the prestigious PetQuip Industry Awards 2024. Director Hannah Edmondson reveals the secrets of her company’s success.

“We are thrilled to have won this award as it means the world to our family and the wider team,” said Hannah. “The business has been the biggest part of our lives for the past 25 years and we work tirelessly throughout the year to provide the best service and products for our customers. It is amazing to be recognised for all our hard work.”

How long has the business been operating?

“Established 25 years ago, we have two physical stores in the Derby area as well as an online presence via our website, Amazon, eBay and TikTok. We carry over 7,000 lines and serve over 250 customers per day in our stores plus a further 800 via our websites. We cater for all pets such as dogs, cats, all small animals, caged birds including parrots, budgies etc, fish and all reptiles! We are arguably the biggest raw food store in the country with around 49 freezers and 25 brands in our Superstore on the Kingsway Industrial Estate, Derby.”

What makes you different from your competitors?

“We are a three-generation family run business and we pride ourselves on our exemplary customer service and our loyalty cards. We have over 15 different loyalty cards offering customers a bag of food for free, as well as our own £10-off instore money off card. We are extremely knowledgable and aim to provide customers with the best advice for their pets, which is why we have a huge customer retention rate. We have customers travelling 30 miles plus to come and visit us in the Superstore to visit our raw range of dog and cat foods as we carry such a large amount of stock.”

How do you attract and then retain customers?

“Word of mouth has always been the best way to gain customers – we are recommended by so many people in the local area. Our loyalty cards, which have been running since 2009, have meant customers keep returning as they will receive £10 off or a free bag when their cards are full.”

How involved do you get in the local community?

“Our first store is in the heart of Mickleover village and so we get involved in many local activities and sponsor the local football teams/stadium etc. We have recently taken on an advertising board near the local hospital and on a main road which has brought many new customers to our stores who didn't know we were here before.”

How important is social media?

“A recent venture has seen us using TikTok, where our most popular video has over 1.6 million views. We post multiple videos per day and have gained a brilliant following on this platform. We do regular email marketing with money-off vouchers and discount codes which again brings many people to the website and we do a similar thing in store around Black Friday.”

PATS 2024 smashes attendance record

PATS has smashed all records with its first-ever three-day show at Telford in Shropshire, attracting its highest ever attendance figures since the event was launched in 2009...

PATS has smashed all records with its first-ever three-day show at Telford in Shropshire, attracting its highest ever attendance figures since the event was launched in 2009.

A total of 3,541 visitors – made up of retailers, buyers, groomers and industry professionals – came through the doors of the Telford International Centre in Shropshire, which was 52% higher than the previous record set last year.

The largest-ever PATS show, staged in four halls and including an Aquatics Zone for the first time, closed with visitors and exhibitors agreeing it had been a huge success, with the event delivering an unrivalled platform for the launch of hundreds of exciting new pet product innovations.

Show director Gordon Thomas said the visitor attendance record, backed up by the highest number of exhibitors (more than 340), was clear evidence of the event’s popularity.

“Overall, the response to PATS 2024 has been excellent and positive, and proves that the pet industry is firmly behind this show. Also, the reaction to news of our move to the NEC Birmingham in 2025 has been greeted with enthusiasm by both exhibitors and visitors.”

The overwhelming reaction to this year’s PATS from exhibitors was one of great delight.

Helen Davies, founder of Oh So Precious, said: “It was another terrific coming-together of passionate people working in the pet trade. We heard lots of positive thoughts about moving to the NEC from visitors, so we have already booked our stand and are looking forward to PATS 2025.”

Zara Igoe, head of marketing at Eden Holistic Pet Food, agreed that it had been a highly successful show, adding: “PATS is not just a trade show, but a thriving hub of connections, creativity, and collaborations in the pet industry. From the very first conversation to the final handshake, our time at PATS was filled with engaging discussions. We can’t wait to reunite with our industry partners, new friends, and loyal customers at next year’s show.”

New exhibitor HugglePets was thrilled with the “incredible response” the company experienced at PATS.  Sales and marketing director Tom Gwilliam said: “The three days were absolutely brilliant, giving us the opportunity to connect with many new and existing customers. PATS proved to be the perfect platform for launching our new catalogue and introducing over 350 brand-new SKUs. We can't wait to be a part of next year's event at the NEC.”

The Canagan Group also reported having a great show. Joint managing director Charlie Williams commented: “It was lovely to reconnect with our existing customers while also having the opportunity to meet potential new ones. We were thrilled to launch three new ranges, all of which have sold amazingly well, further highlighting the value of this event for showcasing our innovations. Looking ahead, we believe that the NEC could offer significant advantages, including improved transport links and a larger venue to accommodate a growing number of exhibitors and visitors – both will enhance the overall experience.”

Jonathan Collin, sales director at Bugalugs Pet Care, said: “PATS 2024 came and went in a flash. We had many great conversations and built many new relationships with some truly great businesses, as well as enhancing our relationships with all our existing partners. PATS truly is a wonderful event that showcases the best of our industry and something we look forward to each year.”

The new Aquatics Zone proved to be a great addition to PATS, with exhibitor Ben Windeatt, sales & marketing director of J&K Aquatics, stating: “It was great to see the Aquatics Zone sold out and full of exhibitors. For us at J&K it was a pleasure, as always, to catch up with a good number of our longstanding customers as well as meet with and introduce our brands and product ranges to potential new ones. Hopefully the new format for 2025, moving into a larger venue, capable of accommodating even more exhibitors, and with better air, road and rail access, will encourage even more visitors, allowing the show to grow in the years to come.”

PATS 2024 also got the thumbs up from visitors.

Phil Moore, CEO and founder of Murphy’s Dog House, Redditch, said: “PATS is exceptionally well organised, easy to navigate and very professionally executed. It provides a perfect opportunity for us to see new products coming to market, and to engage with existing and new suppliers.”

And Kirstan Powell of Muddy Paws Pet Supplies & Groomers in Bodmin, added: “PATS is a fun friendly show and a great place to do business. I will definitely attend next year’s show. Every year it’s well worth our journey from Cornwall.”

The final word was left to exhibitor In Vogue Pets with director Jonothan Goodman stating: “PATS 2024 was wonderfully manic – really, just so good. The move to the NEC is going to be a game-changer. It’s a great venue and the communications and travel are so easy – just get off the train and you are there.”

More pet firms should consider apprenticeship schemes

More pet companies should consider apprenticeship schemes to help them thrive. That’s the view of Mat Priestley, who has seen his business Dogs Play Daycare grow significantly after adopting a traineeship programme...

More pet companies should consider apprenticeship schemes to help them thrive. That’s the view of Mat Priestley, who has seen his business Dogs Play Daycare grow significantly after adopting a traineeship programme.

Dogs Play Daycare has been ranked 13 as one of the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers, recognised for the quality of their programmes.

Mat spoke to Pet Trade Xtra about why his company invested in these training and employment schemes and how they helped the business to develop.

When was Dogs Play Daycare established as a business?

Dogs Play Daycare started trading in June 2015.

Can you share more information about your employees at Dogs Play Daycare and the various training schemes they’re involved in?

As we are licensed, like all dog daycares in the UK, we need staff qualified to work in the animal care industries or staff working towards an animal care qualification. We currently employ six full-time staff and six apprentices, 10 of those are working towards animal care qualifications.

Why did Dogs Play Daycare decide to invest in these training and employment schemes?

Primarily, we wanted to have a measured and measurable foundation of knowledge for all the team which provides us with a benchmark standard. This helps us do more bespoke training and ensures we meet the requirements needed to maintain our license. Additionally, it helps us develop a set of procedures that keep the team and our customers safe, whilst also keeping the business strong as we are always moving forward and developing our capabilities.

How Dogs Play Daycare benefit from these training and employment schemes like apprenticeships?

The Animal Care sector is growing in the UK and since 2018, the Animal Welfare Act has required that those working in this sector being Animal Care qualified. These changes are important in keeping the industry safe and ethical, but it has meant that a skills gap developed. We have known the business attracts people looking for their first job and so the majority of applicants are entry-level and don’t have qualifications. However, the Level 2 Animal Care apprenticeship fills this gap perfectly. We get the opportunity to bring people into our business who aren’t qualified, and we can upskill them on the job. This means we have a team who are skilled in the way we need them to be, and we can shape them to fit our business needs. On a wider level, it also helps to bridge the gap for the employee from school to the workplace.

How do your employees benefit from your training program?

We have noticed a theme amongst our team, past and present, that many tend to have found traditional school and learning in a formal environment difficult – it hasn’t suited them.   The apprenticeship scheme opens up a different way of learning – which still leads to a qualification, and it is in a workplace environment which sets them up for future employment and or learning. This is a great confidence boost – it’s great to watch individuals flourish in the process. Not only do we help them achieve their qualification in Animal Care, but we try to give them skills for future life. For instance, self-appraisals and communication training are two areas in which we try to provide additional support to our team.

You recently ranked 13th as one of the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers, what does this mean to you and your business?

We are really pleased to be ranked 13th as one of the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers, for 2024 and to be recognised for our hard work as a business. It also reflects our team's dedication to the role which led them to achieve their distinction grades. Our customers have also fed back that they also love that we spend time formally training the team, and it gives them confidence in the service we offer.  We’ve also built links with the community as we’ve worked with local schools to find future candidates to help us plan further out, which is mutually beneficial.

What do you think made you stand out to perform so highly as an apprentice employer – what makes the work you do different?

We integrate the apprenticeship qualification into our business processes fully, which has been a real game changer. By working and collaborating with our provider, we have broken the qualification down into 10 modules and our provider comes in-house to do all the learning and reviews. We found this to be a helpful approach by offering additional “off job” and “on job” learning, which looks at each module of the qualification through the lens of the business and the customer. Each apprentice gets to experience a way of learning that works for them.

Why do you think it's important for businesses to consider training schemes and apprenticeships?

We feel apprenticeships offer the opportunity for businesses to bring people in that can offer a fresh perspective on our business processes and how we operate, whilst offering a commercially beneficial foundation qualification and training framework that keeps employees engaged.

Do you have any advice or tips for other SMEs looking to offer apprenticeships and training schemes?

Yes, my top tips are:

  1. Look up The Department for Education’s (DfE) Skills for Life campaign website, which provides training and employment scheme information for employers.
  2. Pick a training provider that wants to work within your business as a partner, so you can align on how best to deliver the qualification for both the learner and the business.
  3. Integrate the qualification into what you do and how you do it, this makes ‘off job’ learning hours part of what you do and not an additional cost to the business.
  4. Breaking down the qualification into modules makes it easier to see where individuals are struggling and need extra support, which in turn helps reduce dropout rates.

Award-winning herbal pet care experts at Dorwest Herbs have announced a partnership with television presenter and writer, Kate Humble, to support their annual campaign helping to calm anxiety in pets due to loud noises including fireworks.

Kate’s television career has spanned almost three decades, with her passion for wildlife and travel crossing over to broadcasting, including Springwatch, Escape to the Farm and Countryfile. As an avid dog lover and fan of natural supplements, Kate is supporting Dorwest’s calming range this autumn.

Kate also comes with first-hand experience of supporting her own dogs with anxiety so understands how worrying it can be.

She says: “The most important thing to do is be calm yourself - and plan ahead. It’s always hard to know how to help, but Dorwest herbal remedies to calm are a fantastic solution. It’s great to be able to fully support their campaign, and I’ll be giving [my dogs] Teg and Mouse Scullcap & Valerian Tablets this year to help support their fireworks anxiety.”

Year on year firework events have become more popular and widespread, which can cause upset to pets everywhere. With 57% of households now owning a pet (Statistica 2023), the experts in herbal pet care at Dorwest help prepare pets with calming natural remedies for general anxieties, including:

  • Scullcap & Valerian Tablets - with active herbs naturally supporting the calming pathways within the nervous system; reducing anxiety without immobilising muscles or causing drowsiness.
  • Valerian Compound - Containing pure extracts of three herbs in liquid form, it acts within just 30 minutes, with calming effects lasting for up to two hours.

Dorwest’s calming campaign for fireworks runs this year from 23rd September to 5th November, and annually conveys ways to keep pets calm and stress-free during fireworks season.

Kate is the ideal partner to support the campaign, as she believes looking after any animal is a huge responsibility – including keeping animals fit and healthy, ensuring a good diet and enough stimulation, and seeking other proven support such as herbal remedies, stating: “There is great pleasure to be had from having a happy, healthy animal – and the rewards you get in return are priceless.”

Managing Director at Dorwest Jo Boughton-White states: “We’re so excited to partner with Kate, as a lifelong wildlife enthusiast and dog lover! She’s got direct experience of anxious pets and has also seen the benefits of supplements with her own dogs, so it’s a pleasure to work with such an esteemed broadcaster within the animal industry.”

Until 5th November 2024, receive 25% off Scullcap & Valerian Tablets and Valerian Compound when bought together as a calming combo. Simply use promo code FIREWORKS24 at checkout.

PAWD DRINKS just keeps on growing

London-based business start-up and pet health supplement company, PAWD DRINKS is celebrating major success this month following their debut at PATS...

London-based business start-up and pet health supplement company, PAWD DRINKS is celebrating major success this month following their debut at PATS. Having made the finals in three categories at the PetQuip Awards all their hard work has also resulted in making the final in The Supplier of the Year Category at the Pet Industry Federation Awards which will be presented in November.

Founded by young entrepreneurs and old friends, Rory Hanna and Archie Wilson who were looking for an easier way to administer supplements to dogs other than in pill or powder format, their innovation PAWD DRINKS made the finals of the PIF Innovation Awards in June where they met and were accepted onto the NatWest Accelerator Programme. Their debut at PATS has reaped even further rewards.

Rory said: “As one of the youngest businesses at PATS, we were amazed by the interest we had from the largest of players including the major pet wholesalers and we have been accepted to stock one of the largest chain of pet shops in the UK with our drinks. We will be announcing that in more detail later on when everything is in place. I believe this is a testament to all the hard work we have done building the brand organically. Over the summer the PAWD team has been present at over 60 days worth of events, building brand awareness at dog shows, equine events, pet shows and trade events. With this interest from the large players, it is proof that the concept has been validated, and the ball is beginning to gain momentum. We look forward to a big Q4 in the run-up to Christmas. We are seeing great opportunities to promote our CALMING DRINK in particular in the run up to Bonfire Night and the festive season.”

PAWD DRINKS’ products are receiving five star reviews from customers and PATS was the perfect opportunity to test market a new variety for all dogs. This product will be officially launched later on this year.

PAWD DRINKS is a revolutionary and groundbreaking range of liquid health supplements, scientifically crafted to target the common health issues faced by our beloved dogs. These innovative products are the result of extensive research and development by world-leading animal nutritionists including Dr. Farshad Goodarzi Boroojeni and are veterinary-approved. Each formula has been carefully crafted to not only address specific health concerns but also contribute to the overall well-being of our four-legged friends.  PAWD DRINKS are pH neutral and contain no acidifiers or preservatives.

The drinks market for pets is relatively new but growing and PAWD DRINKS tackle a number of important areas. As well as hydration and wellness, PAWD DRINKS are absorbed more quickly andefficiently by a dog's body compared to pills, powders and chews.  This is important when addressing certain health or behavioural issues and when you need a fast result. Administering liquid supplements to dogs is easier than giving them pills or chews, especially for dogs that are finicky eaters or have difficulty swallowing. Liquid supplements can be mixed into their food or water, making it less likely for dogs to detect and refuse them. You can also customise dosage. They are palatable, achieve faster results and are gentle on the digestive system. PAWD DRINKS are less likely to cause irritation or discomfort compared to some pill formulations.

PAWD DRINKS Joints has been formulated to address stiffness and joint mobility with up to 80% of all dogs suffering from some form of mobility issues over the age of 8. PAWD DRINKS Joints contains natural ingredients, such as ginger, acerola powder and devil’s claw root to support joint mobility.

PAWD DRINKS Calming will help to relax and soothe your dog in any anxious situations. This can be in the form of separation, social, travel or noise anxiety, with around 50% of dogs showing significant fear in response to thunder or fireworks.

So as well as helping to keep your pet hydrated, you can tackle some of the many problems that affect dogs helping to improve their overall wellness.

Leading veterinary surgeon and nutritionist Dr Veneta Kozhuharova, is Director of Associated Veterinary Services based in Rainham in Kent, made her trade debut at PATS with the launch of a new variety of her revolutionary food, Dr Veneta.

Stay Well (Chicken & Rabbit, Apple & Pumpkin) is the latest recipe in the Dr Veneta range and is designed to maintain a healthy status quo in a dog’s wellbeing. The food champions ingredients that are highly digestible and in the case of rabbit, hypoallergenic. The food is designed to keep inflammation in check whilst honing in on ingredients that support improved blood sugar control. This is achieved by smoothing unwelcome peaks and dips with added fibre.   This new recipe also supports the digestive and pivotal microbiome whilst simultaneously protecting the gut lining.

Through Dr Veneta’s work as a nutritionist as well as being a vet, and approving recipes for export to different countries, she became inspired to create her own range of dog food.  Dr Veneta Freeze-dried food is the latest phenomenon in the pet food market. It marries the convenience of a traditional kibble with the nutritional value of a raw diet.  The intricate freeze-drying process safeguards both the nutritional structure and shelf life of the products to create a far-reaching range that supports the ongoing health and wellbeing of your dogs whilst providing them with essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It is also convenient and easy to use, highly digestible, grain free, is a complete meal, uses human-grade natural ingredients such as raw meat and vegetables and is high in protein. The food is suitable for all sizes and breeds of dogs from 6 months of age. The kibbles themselves also make excellent dog training treats.

Dr Veneta has created a food that does not just support the wellbeing of dogs, but also their microbiome which is responsible for so many physiological functions that happen in dogs’ bodies and where 84% of the all-important immune system resides. Each recipe has been designed to tackle ailments seen in an everyday veterinary practice – elderly dogs, anxiety, joint problems, poor digestion and skin irritations. In addition to herbs and superfoods, a “hero” ingredient, Nutritional Yeast which is fermented and gluten free and very palatable to dogs has been added to support and feed a dog’s microbiome. All meat proteins, vegetables and fruits are British and locally sourced supporting local communitiesThe diet is also extremely good for maintaining a dog’s weight.

The food can be used as an alternative to the raw food diet, a complete meal, as a dog treat and as a topper making it the go to stable for any pet food store cupboard.

The potential of this range was rewarded at PATS with a number of excellent stockists placing orders to sell the range.

Dr Veneta is available in five varieties: STAY MOBILE (Chicken Swede & Blueberry) STAY CALM (Turkey, Pear & Apple) STAY SHINY (Turkey, Salmon, Carrot & Blueberry) STAY WELL (Chicken & Rabbit, Apple & Pumpkin) & STAY YOUNG (Pork, Pumpkin & Pear).

Dr Veneta made the finals of the PetQuip Awards and will be sponsoring the PIF Awards in November.

EASYEAT secures new stockists at PATS

Making its trade exhibition debut at PATS, EasyEat picked up a number of orders from independent pet shops around the country

The EasyEat has been created in the UK by passionate pet lovers, Callum Saunders and Declan Poole in order to alleviate the harm that is caused by the unhealthy eating position from traditional and even raised bowls.  Working with numerous vets they have created a beautifully designed raised pet feeder that will enhance your dog’s life and with its aesthetic design, will add style to your home.

Making their trade exhibition debut at PATS, the pair were delighted to pick up a number of orders from independent pet shops around the country as well as having the opportunity to meet with their buyer from Pets at Home which has recently given them a listing online. They are hoping to move the product in-store at some point in the future. They also had the opportunity to discuss collaborations with other pet companies and to showcase their new slow feeder insert for their EasyEat Feeder.

The EasyEat Feeder has already seen success having made the finals of the PetQuip Awards  in three categories and has also recently made the finals of the PIF Awards in the Best New Business category which will be awarded in November.

The EasyEat’s open, edgeless entry creates a natural feeding position - a straight back and elongated neck with a forward facing head creating open airways. Opening airways is essential with some breeds (particularly flat-nosed breeds) as they are prone to suffer with narrow nasal passages and windpipes which can lead to breathing problems.

The EasyEat feeder is currently aimed at small to medium-sized dogs but many breeds whether large or small can have certain anatomical predispositions and, can indeed experience issues with their backs and posture when eating. This is often due to the height of their food and water dishes. When these bowls are too low, dogs may have to stoop or strain their necks downward to eat, which can put stress on their backs and contribute to poor posture over time. On the other hand, if the bowls are too high, dogs may have to stretch upward to reach their food, which can also strain their backs and necks. Having the right height of feeding bowl is therefore very important.

The inspiration for this design came from one of the creator’s dogs, Benji. He was diagnosed with pug myelopathy about 4-5 years ago and at the age of 7 found himself in a lot of pain, couldn’t really use his back legs and would cry during feeding times as he would be bending down putting pressure on his joints and spine. It was only after experimenting with a plate on a flat surface that Callum and Declan found the correct feeding position which has now been replicated in The EasyEat feeder.

“The EasyEat feeder has an open entry design, with very little depth which is the catalyst to unlocking the health benefits of the product. There is nothing else like it on the market in terms of the technical measurements and design. We have a design patent across the UK, EU and a patent in the USA,” says Callum

“Incorporated in our design are a number of features such as: built in handles for easy manoeuvrability, over-moulded TPE feet to help stability and protect floors, stacking feature for easy storage, removable inserts to help with a slow feeder option and our ergonomic design which helps cleaning and keeping everything hygienic.  All of this together helps make us truly unique.”

The EasyEat feeder is available in a range of colours, original beige and five pastel colours.

RRP: £39.99-£44.99 depending on finish. Slow feeder extra insert £19.99.

Dog G8 Company reaches 10,000 sales orders milestone on Shopify

Dog G8 Company has reached a remarkable milestone with the business having reached the 10,000 orders target on Shopify earlier on this year. The company has just been presented with the trophy for the achievement.

Dog G8 Company has reached a remarkable milestone with the business having reached the 10,000 orders target on Shopify earlier on this year. The company has just been presented with the trophy for the achievement.

The Dog-G8 gate was the inspiration of Peter Maxted, the founder of the company who has been a pet sitter for over 20 years and a dog owner for the same amount of time. He was very aware of the risks associated with dogs at front doors e.g. escapes, attacks, thefts and although there were other gates on the market, he felt they were inadequate and ineffective enough to work for all breeds. He therefore decided to design and sell his own version so he could keep his and client’s dogs safer at the front door. Peter’s son Chris is also a director in the business and has been working alongside Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership and the University of Liverpool to raise awareness of dog attacks and their impact on delivery workers.

The Dog-G8 product is British made and features a concertina, modular and retractable design. The product is incredibly versatile and can be used on multiple configurations ranging from the front door to stairways, hallways, motorhomes and more. The gates modular design enables it to be spanned to any width, allowing the gate to be fitted to the widest of configurations such as patio doors where standard, conventional gates cannot fit.

The gate is made from mild steel, coated in chrome or white powder coat, bolted together with bespoke, customised clips which give the gate strength and durability.

When the gate is not in use it sits flat and compact to one side it’s neat, unobtrusive, and out of the way. Finally, it is removable, enabling it to be easily stored away or docked to other configurations (if extra brackets are purchased).

The Dog-G8 can also be used in horse boxes, motorhomes and caravans. When the gate is spanned across the entrance, this allows any motorhome or caravan user to have their habitation door open, without the risk of their dog dashing out. The gate will provide dogs with much needed ventilation and offers great visibility.

The gate is excellent for when you’re parked up at campsites or beaches where perimeters cannot be formed but you wish to have the door open.

Since launch the company has seen massive growth and now sells directly to customers in the UK, Canada, United States, and Europe. The product went viral on Tiktok and Facebook attracting over 100 million organic views. The Dog-G8 Company was the Theo Paphitis' Small Business Sunday Winner in March 2021 and in 2023 won the Silver Award at the PetQuip Awards for Innovation.

Since their appearance on Dragons’ Den, The Dog-G8 Company has brought out new variants of their products including a taller version of the gate alongside offering customers a range of new colours.

Commenting on their milestone, Peter Maxted said: “Selling over 10,000 gates is something I’m incredibly proud of, to help this many dogs and owners is an amazing achievement and without the help from Shopify, our suppliers and partners it wouldn’t be possible. Our next target is to reach the 100,000 order milestone.”

The business is looking to widen its distribution network by targeting the trade and wholesalers in the next year.

Cat skewered in chest by bamboo saved by PDSA vets

A cat owner from London is urging gardeners to make sure plant support canes are safely stored or capped as they clear gardens this autumn, after his cat nearly died when a bamboo cane pierced his chest.

It remains a mystery as to how three-year-old Shadow, from Plumstead in South East London, became skewered by the 10-inch piece of cane. But thankfully the plucky puss made a full recovery thanks to the expertise of leading vet charity PDSA and with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, who supported the cost of pain relief and antibiotics for Shadow.

His owner, Mark Rozier (51) explained what happened: “I heard a terrible scream at 4am and immediately knew something was seriously wrong. I have lung disease, which often means I struggle to get to sleep at night. So I was awake when I heard it and immediately got up and ran to my kids' bedroom to check they were ok.

"The kids were still fast asleep, so I followed the screaming sound into the back garden, where I saw Shadow on top of the back wall. He had something sticking out of him and was clearly in distress, continuing to call out.”

At first Shadow ran off and Mark desperately searched for him, but thankfully the distressed cat eventually returned to the garden, allowing Mark to clearly see the bamboo cane piercing deep into his chest. He said: “It was an absolute horror to see, we honestly thought he wouldn’t make it. We quickly rang the PDSA Pet Hospital in Thamesmead, who told us to bring him in immediately.”

At PDSA, which provides free and low-cost care to sick and injured pets in need, vets were shocked to see what had happened to Shadow and quickly got to work.

PDSA Vet Malcolm Fletcher said: “"The X-rays revealed the bamboo stick had gone in between two ribs and punctured the chest wall. This allowed air into the space between the wall of the chest and the lungs themselves, causing Shadow's lung to begin to collapse."

Shadow required urgent surgery to remove the stick and repair the damage; his distraught owners were warned that he could die from this injury. The air was drained from Shadow's chest, and the wound in his chest wall was carefully stitched to allow the lung to re-inflate and prevent any further collapse.

Mark added: “Shadow isn’t just a pet, he’s a family member and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him. He brings so much comfort to all of us, so we were devastated when we were told he might not make it.”

Thanks to the PDSA vet team's efforts, Shadow's surgery went well – despite the high risk. After an overnight stay at the Pet Hospital, he was on the road to recovery. Much to Mark's delight, Shadow was able to go home the very next day with pain relief, antibiotics, and instructions to rest.

Laura Chow, head of charities at People's Postcode Lottery, said: “We know just how important pets are to their loving families, and how incredibly distressing it can be when they suffer an accident. Last year funding from players of People's Postcode Lottery helped over 85,000 PDSA pet patients with the cost of pain relief. Support from our players ensures that pets like Shadow can get the urgent help they need quickly and easily.”

Mark continued: “We’re extremely grateful to PDSA for saving Shadow’s life, the team did a fantastic job. We still don’t know exactly how Shadow got impaled – we think he must have landed on an upright piece of bamboo stick in a neighbouring garden, broken it off and somehow managed to keep moving with the stick in his body. I have all my bamboo canes capped and would encourage all gardeners to do the same for safety.”

Shadow is now fully recovered and loves relaxing in Mark’s garden, but he doesn’t go far from home these days and is always inside by 10pm.

PDSA is the vet charity for pets in need, providing free and low-cost vet care when owners are struggling financially. Through its 49 Pet Hospitals it sees 11 pets every minute, helping to keep pets and people together. It receives no government funding for its vital work, relying entirely on public donations and support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Two thirds of owners say having a pet boosts mental wellbeing

Research from Bella & Duke highlights the benefits of pet ownership…

Pets aren’t just pets, they’re family. With nearly two-thirds (63%) of pet owners saying their furry friends boost their mental wellbeing, Bella & Duke is on a mission to ensure the nation's animals get the healthy, happy lives they deserve. It’s time we give back with a complete and nutritious diet and unconditional love, ensuring they thrive as much as we do.

It's not just about boosting mental wellbeing, 41% of pet owners said they do more physical activity because of owning a pet, helping them improve their physical health. Pets can even help strengthen our relationships, with 17% of pet owners saying having a pet has strengthened their relationship with their partner, and 13% said they get along with their family better because of a furry companion.

Over half (56%) of pet owners said that having a pet reduces their stress levels and 53% admitted that without their pet they would feel lonelier. With so many positive aspects of pet ownership, Bella & Duke wanted to understand pet owners favourite thing about having a pet, with the top five reasons including:

  1. The joy they bring to life (56%)
  2. The warm welcome home (48%)
  3. Snuggles on the sofa (47%)
  4. Always being by their side (30%)
  5. Being healthier and more active from having a pet (22%)

As Bella & Duke encourages pet owners to give their pets the very best nutrition, pet owners revealed what they do to ensure their animal companions get to live the best life possible. Nearly two thirds (63%) of pet owners said they try to ensure their pet gets the best food and nutrition, but it was revealed that three quarters (74%) of pet owners don’t know what ingredients are in the food they feed their pets, something which Bella & Duke is campaigning to address as the industry leaders called for clearer labelling standards earlier in the year.

56% said they buy them special treats, and 48% said they buy them new toys, as well as treating them with gifts, a third (31%) of pet owners said they take their pet on adventures and a quarter (25%) said they take them out to meet other pets.

Some pet owners shared the extremes they go to, to treat their pet. A fifth (20%) said they treat their pet to animal friendly holidays, 19% said they changed the layout of their home to make it more pet friendly, and 8% said their pet even has its own room.

James Sturrock, CEO at Bella & Duke, said: “We know the joy pets bring to our lives, from boosting mental wellbeing, staying fit, or just being there, the benefits go on and on. We want to make sure pet owners are giving their pets the happy, healthy and long lives they deserve. Just as we feel healthier and more energised when we eat a clean, nutritious diet, our pets thrive on wholesome, species-appropriate food that aids them in their day to day lives.

“At Bella & Duke, we're driven to do what's right by our pets, and we celebrate the deeply rewarding relationship we have with our four-legged friends. We believe there's no better way to thank them for all they do for us than giving them nutritious food they deserve. We love hearing all the stories of the positive impact pets are having on our lives and equally love hearing all the stories from customers telling us about the impact our raw food has on their pets lives.”

PATS moves to the NEC Birmingham in 2025

The organisers of PATS have today announced that the exhibition will move to the NEC Birmingham in 2025. PATS 2025 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – will take place in Hall 1 of the NEC from Sunday, 28th September to Tuesday, 30th September.

The organisers of PATS have today announced that the exhibition will move to the NEC Birmingham in 2025.

PATS 2025 – the Pet & Aquatics Trade Show – will take place in Hall 1 of the NEC from Sunday, 28th September to Tuesday, 30th September.

News of the move was released during this year’s PATS, which has attracted a record number of more than 340 exhibitors to the Telford International Centre in Shropshire.

The continued growth and success of the exhibition – now in its 15th year – has meant that PATS has outgrown its present home.

“The Telford International Centre has been a brilliant venue for us,” said show director Gordon Thomas. “We have hosted highly successful PATS shows here since 2015 as the exhibition has continued to grow in size.”

“It will be sad to leave Telford but the demand for exhibitor stand space keeps growing. The decision to move to Hall 1 at the NEC Birmingham means we will be able to accommodate 500 UK and international exhibitors at PATS 2025 – all together in one hall and under one roof.”

The NEC Birmingham is the UK’s largest exhibition centre and its central location offers retailers and buyers superb transport links. As well as being located in the heart of the country’s motorway network close to junction 6 of the M42, it also has direct rail links to major cities plus Birmingham International Airport on its doorstep. There are over 16,500 onsite car parking spaces at the NEC, hotels to fit all budgets, and a wide range of purpose-built catering facilities to suit all tastes.

PATS has experienced tremendous growth since launching its first exhibition at Sandown Park in 2009, and the key to its success has been a willingness to develop as a result of listening to feedback from both exhibitors and visitors.

This year’s PATS has seen the introduction of an extra show day and the new Aquatics Zone, a dedicated hall for reptile, aquatics and watergardening exhibitors. The reaction to PATS 2024 has been fantastic, with packed halls buzzing with activity on the first two days.

“We’re really proud of the fact that PATS is held in such regard by the UK and international pet industries,” added Gordon. “This year’s show has been a huge success so far, and we’re confident the next step for PATS – the move to the NEC Birmingham – will continue that upward trend.”

Record-breaking awards celebrate industry excellence

The PetQuip Awards dinner saw awards presented across 15 categories at a buzzing evening with 300 guests representing suppliers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors and industry trade exhibition organisers...

The PetQuip Awards dinner saw awards presented across 15 categories at a buzzing evening with 300 guests representing suppliers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors and industry trade exhibition organisers.

New awards for this year included two people-focused categories, Rising Star and Employee of the Year.

The Rising Star award, sponsored by Noble Futures, includes a bursary, courtesy of the sponsor, for the winner to use for personal development. The winner was Clara Hewson from The Muzzle Movement.

The judges found Employee of the Year so hard to judge that they awarded joint gold winners for two people who work in very different parts of the pet care sector. The awards went to Charmain Cane from We.pet Independent Wholesale and Michelle Williams from Associated Veterinary Services.

A delighted Charmain said: “I am over the moon. To hear myself described by my colleagues as ‘the glue that holds the team together’ was very special. I was shocked to be nominated, so you can imagine my delight at winning this award.”

An additional new award for best marketing campaign saw an excellent, high quality set of entries, which shone a light on the creativity and innovation from marketing teams across the sector. This category also resulted in joint gold awards, to Frozzys for its celebration pack campaign and Pawsome Pets Boutique for its Disney campaign.

Jackie Kirk, Marketing and Innovations at Frozzys commented: “The Frozzys team were delighted to pick up the gold award for Best Trade Marketing Campaign. The campaign was developed to mark our 10 year anniversary with the new Limited Edition Celebration Pack. Our small team achieved remarkable success in launching the pack nationwide, demonstrating the power of creativity, collaboration, and strategic thinking.

“We were so happy to see a marketing award added to the prestigious categories at the PetQuip awards, recognising the hard work that goes in to execute a successful, multi-channel campaign.”

The awards evening included trophies presented to multiple, independent and overseas retailers, with the gold winner for international retailer of the year represented by three of its senior directors, who were thrilled by this independent recognition of the high standards and expert personnel the company employs. Kölle Zoo has 24 experience stores, with welfare and animal friendly husbandry at its heart.

The UK multiple retailer gold award was won by Jollyes and UK independent retailer was won by Trusty Pet Supplies.

The final award of the evening, for Lifetime Achievement, was presented to Celia Hammondwhose original glamorous career focussed her attention on animal cruelties and who then used her high profile to change the views of the UK public on cruel animal practices. She then decided to devote her life to improving the care and lives of stray and feral animals in the UK.

With the move of PATS to the NEC in 2025, the PetQuip Awards dinner will take place alongside the exhibition as usual.

Amanda Sizer Barrett, director general of PetQuip, said: “Our whole team was delighted to celebrate so many successes in this innovative industry across product development, marketing, export, skilled team members and retailers. With a record-breaking attendance this year, we are looking forward to seeing even more of the industry gathering to celebrate and network at the 2025 PetQuip Awards!”

The PetQuip Awards 2024 were sponsored by: Leopard Co, Group55, Law Print and Packaging, Interzoo, Zoomark, SUPERZOO, Noble Futures, Petface, Pedigree Wholesale, PBW News, PPM, CIPS, PATS, James & Steel and the charity partner was Nature’s SAFE.

Pets Choice has announced a record financial year, surpassing the £100 million turnover milestone for 2023.

The North-West based company, which is behind brands including Webbox, Bob Martin, Felight and TastyBone, reported a revenue increase from £95 million to £109.7 million for the year ending 31st December 2023.

This growth is largely attributed to Pets Choice’s strategic brand acquisitions, including the plant-based pet care brand HOWND and premium pet food brand Vet’s Kitchen, enhancing its presence in the premium pet care sector.

Additionally, new product development, innovation and improved distribution across its core brands has contributed significantly to the company’s performance.

With a strong emphasis on innovation and a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of pet owners, Pets Choice remains well-positioned to further strengthen its market presence in the years ahead.

Tony Raeburn, CEO at Pets Choice, said: “We have come a long way in the last few years and to pass through £100m revenues is a milestone for the business.

“However, like any good privately owned business we are re-investing massively into both our brands and infrastructure so that we can continue to drive growth and job security, and we look forward to the future.”

Dobbies Garden Centres has initiated a restructuring plan to address historically uneconomical rent costs and ensure a return to sustainable profitability.

The RP, and other strategic initiatives, are expected to return Dobbies to sustainable profitability through site rationalisations, rent reductions and other tangible cost savings – securing its long-term future and allowing access to future investment.

The RP includes the closure of 11 unprofitable sites plus six unprofitable little dobbies sites, and impacts 465 colleagues, of which 82 are full-time. Dobbies will also be working with landlords to seek temporary rent reductions at a further nine sites.

While the process is ongoing, all sites will continue to operate as normal.

There will be no impact to suppliers.

Subject to the RP being successfully approved, we expect the affected sites to cease trading by the end of the year. Thereafter, Dobbies will operate 60 stores and continue to play a key role in the market, working constructively with stakeholders and suppliers, and having an active and committed role in the communities in which it’s based.

The proposed store closures are:

  • Altrincham
  • Antrim
  • Gloucester
  • Gosforth
  • Harlestone Heath
  • Huntingdon
  • Inverness
  • King’s Lynn
  • Pennine
  • Reading
  • Stratford-upon-Avon
  • Cheltenham (little dobbies)
  • Chiswick (little dobbies)
  • Clifton (little dobbies)
  • Richmond (little dobbies)
  • Stockbridge (little dobbies)
  • Westbourne Grove (little dobbies)
