Norfolk-based IFD (International Freeze Dried), which specialises in own label freeze-dried pet innovation for dogs and cats with treats, toppers, foods and kibble plus products, has acquired freeze-dried raw only brand COYA Pet Foods in a move to accelerate the category growth and demand for freeze-dried products.

“I’m delighted to have acquired COYA,” said Craig Taylor, MD of IFD Group Ltd. “We have had a long-standing relationship with them, making their products since their launch in May 2023 and seen them grow with distribution, with over 1,400 stores across the Pet Specialty channel.

“By bringing this brand in house we hope to grow the sector of freeze-dried to where it is in North America, where it has been so successful in providing convenient raw and a new super premium natural category.

“We are proud to be brand partners for our private label customers and are looking forward to developing this exciting technology with them and now helping to drive the category.

Peter Roy, the founder of COYA, said: “Launching COYA was a very exciting time, seeing how freeze-dried raw would participate in the £360m UK raw market.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the brand and the team behind its success over the last 12 months, and a big thank you to everyone that helped, including consumers and retailers.

Petbuddy Group (PBG), a leading consortium of super-premium pet food brands, has announced theacquisition of Thrive Pet Foods. Founded in 2018 with its flagship brand Buddy Pet Foods, PBG has rapidly grown to become a major player in the pet food industry, now boasting a portfolio of eight premium brands.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone in PBG’s ambitious journey to build a global portfolio of market-leading pet food brands.

At the core of PBG’s philosophy is a commitment to providing high-quality, natural pet food products. Each brand under the PBG umbrella adheres to stringent standards, ensuring that only the finest, natural ingredients are used. For example, this dedication to quality is evident in Buddy Pet Foods, which offers all-natural, high-quality pet food, snacks, and supplements for dogs from Sweden, and Nutrolin, the Nordic leader in supplements.

Thrive Pet Foods, with a market presence spanning over 20 years, is cherished by European customers for its exceptional quality, consistency, transparency, and brand values. Known for its unparalleled product quality, Thrive has built a loyal customer base who trust the brand’s commitment to high standards. Thrive, already the European market leader in freeze-dried products, brings a robust portfolio of wet cat and dog food to PBG. The integration of Thrive into the PBG family is set to accelerate the brand’s growth and reach, leveraging PBG’s extensive network of leading global retailers.

Alexander Retzlik, CEO of PBG, highlighted the acquisition as a pivotal step in building a group of forward-thinking pet food brands. “Thrive's innovative product range and market leadership in freeze-dried products complement our vision perfectly. We are committed to making significant investments in the Thrive brand to elevate it to a global leader,” Retzlik stated. These investments will focus on expanding product lines and enhancing distribution channels to meet the growing demand for high-quality pet food globally.

With its strong foothold in the Nordics and the UK, PBG plans to use its established distribution networks to introduce Thrive products to new markets. The group’s strategic approach includes leveraging synergies in sales, distribution, and production to ensure efficient market penetration and sustained growth. As a combined group, PBG exports to over 50 countries, significantly broadening the market reach for Thrive’s products. Paul Finger, the former owner of Thrive, will continue to work closely with PBG to drive the brand’s global expansion efforts.

PBG is committed to sustainable goals in society and in environment. In conducting business this means that we constantly look for ways to reduce our environmental footprint and to conserve natural resources. This commitment to sustainability, combined with innovative product offerings, positions PBG as a leader in the premium pet food market.

Nutrolin, a unique star in PBG’s portfolio, exemplifies commitment to innovation and science. As the Nordic leader in pet oil supplements, Nutrolin recently launched a new range of nutritional pastes developed after years of research. These oleogel pastes, likely the most effective dog and cat supplements globally, leverage the synergies between highest doses of Omega-3s and other active ingredients to provide unparalleled health benefits. Own production facility guarantees quality and prompt deliveries. Nutrolin’s ongoing innovation is a testament to PBG’s mission to set new pet nutrition and care standards.

Petbuddy Group’s acquisition of Thrive Pet Foods is a testament to its commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainability. Co-founder Erik Wide Gustafsson emphasized the group's excitement in building high-quality brands with integrity. "We are passionate about using the best manufacturing processes and ingredients to ensure the best life for all pets. Natural alternative to traditional chemical flea control

The Holistic Hound, a leader in natural pet care, was thrilled when it won the coveted Pet Industry Federation Innovation Award 2024 for its new product Don't Bug Me – a herbal monthly spot-on alternative designed to repel ticks and fleas in pets...

The Holistic Hound, a leader in natural pet care, was thrilled when it won the coveted Pet Industry Federation Innovation Award 2024 for its new product Don't Bug Me – a herbal monthly spot-on alternative designed to repel ticks and fleas in pets.

Founded in 2005 by best friends Jo Arbon and Clair Kelly, The Holistic Hound is at the forefront of the natural pet care industry. Their commitment to handcrafting 100% natural, scientifically-backed herbal products that promote the well-being of pets has set them apart as innovators and leaders in the field.

"Don't Bug Me" is a testament to The Holistic Hound’s dedication to providing pet owners with safe and natural alternatives. This new product harnesses the power of herbal ingredients to effectively protect pets from ticks and fleas without the use of harmful chemicals. It is a monthly spot-on treatment that is easy to apply, ensuring that pets are protected year-round.

Traditional parasiticides have recently featured in the news as they have been found to be damaging to wildlife and our rivers. Despite an EU-wide ban on their use in farming, neurotoxins were found in 99% of water samples from 20 UK rivers. Some concerns have been raised that these toxins are originating from licenced veterinary treatments we use on our pets. This is where “Don’t Bug Me” is different. It does not contain any neurotoxic ingredients, making it safe for pets, their people, and the environment.

Furthermore, the Holistic Hound avoids single-use plastic blister packs, and in doing so supports a commitment to long term environmental sustainability.

A single bottle will typically last a 20kg dog a year, with standard monthly application, making it not only an environmentally positive choice, but financially savvy choice for pet owners too.

"We are incredibly honoured to receive the Pet Industry Federation Innovation Award 2024," said Jo Arbon, co-founder of The Holistic Hound. "This recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to creating natural and effective pet care solutions. 'Don't Bug Me' is a product we are immensely proud of, and we believe it will make a significant difference in the lives of pets and their owners."

Fellow co-founder Clair Kelly added, "Winning this award highlights the innovation and hard work of our entire team. We are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in natural pet care, and we will continue to strive for excellence and bring more ground-breaking products to the market."

The Pet Industry Federation Innovation Award is a prestigious accolade that recognises outstanding achievements and innovations in the pet care industry. The Holistic Hound’s Don't Bug Me stood out among numerous entries, impressing the judges with its unique formulation, efficacy, and commitment to sustainability.

Fast-growing Jollyes set to open its 103rd new store

Fast-growing pet retail group Jollyes will open its 103rd retail outlet when it unveils a new superstore in Nuneaton tomorrow (Friday) before re-opening revamped premises in Newcastle on Saturday...

Jollyes chief executive officer Joe Wykes with NFRSA founder The Countess Bathurst after announcing the retail group with fundraise for the charity.

Jollyes will open its 103rd retail outlet when it unveils a new superstore in Nuneaton tomorrow before re-opening revamped premises in Newcastle on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the UK’s fastest-growing pet retailer, has formally launched a partnership with the National Foundation for Retired Service Animals (NFRSA) which will see it fundraise for the charity over the next 12 months.

The partnership, which will run alongside the local charities each of Jollyes 100-plus stores support, will help NFRSA support the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals from across the emergency service family – the police, fire, border force, National Crime Agency, NHS and prison services.

The first stores to fundraise for NFRSA will be Jollyes’ new store at Nuneaton’s Newtown Road which opens at 10am tyomorrow (Friday 28 June).  Fundraising will also take place the next day (Saturday 29 June) when Jollyes re-launches its revamped Newcastle store at West Denton Retail Park, after a significant refurbishment.

Over the next 12 months, all Jollyes’ stores will be raising money for NFRSA with collections matched by Jollyes up to £20,000 that will help NFRSA support retired service animals and their owners.

Attending the Nuneaton opening will be NFRSA’s founder and chairman The Countess Bathurst former High Sheriff of Gloucestershire alongside NFRSA ambassador and England rugby union player Lewis Ludlow.

They will also be joined by three retired Warwickshire police dogs - RPD Duke, Robbo the force’s, newest licensed search dog and Tilly, its oldest registered search dog.  All three dogs will bite through a string of sausages to declare the store open.

There will be goody bags available for the first 100 customers, stilt walkers and an opportunity for all customers to spin Jollyes’ iconic ‘Wheel of Furtune’ to win instant prizes.

Jollyes has also invited parliamentary candidates in both Nuneaton and Newcastle to each opening to learn more about its ‘pet manifesto’ which includes a proposal that the next government considers a ‘pet pension’ or stipend for retired service animals to help owners meet the cost of protecting those animals who protected us.

“We can’t wait to open our doors for the first time in Nuneaton this Friday and at our refurbished store in Newcastle,” said Jollyes’ chief executive officer Joe Wykes.

“Our teams will be at the ready to show customers old and new the full range of what the best Jollyes stores can offer, all backed by the pet advice  our colleagues are famous for.

“And I’m thrilled that in both Nuneaton and Newcastle we’ll be launching our partnership with NFRSA – we already know how generous our customers and colleagues are and we’ll work hard over the coming months to make a real difference for the retired service animals under their care.”

The founder of NFRSA, The Countess Bathurst said: “Jollyes’ passion is for pets and their families and the NFRSA’s passion is for retired service animals across the country, so our amazing new partnership has the most extraordinary synergy and energy.

“Our duty is to care for them at every level and I’m delighted and deeply grateful that Jollyes and the NFRSA are joining hands to make that happen.”

Jollyes’ new Nuneaton store will be its 103rd in the UK and will launch with a frozen raw food shop-in-shop.  Later this year it will also open a community pet clinic offering low-cost vet services such as microchipping and vaccinations.

The store, at Newton Retail Park has created nine new roles and will be managed by Andy Kineton who recently joined Jollyes after store and regional manager roles for Iceland, Booker and B&M.

The next day (Saturday 29 June), Jollyes will be re-launching its West Denton store in Newcastle after a major refit.

Jollyes has grown its store estate by 50% in three years and has had an remarkable start to 2024 winning new investment to supercharge its growth, being named as the best retailer in Britain at the prestigious Retail Week awards for retailers under £250m turnover and making the Sunday Times’ list for the first time as one of Britain’s best big companies to work for

Mars Petcare introduces new Sheba Kitten range

Mars Petcare is expanding its portfolio of meals with the launch of its new Sheba Kitten range for the first time. Recognising the opportunity to future-proof the petcare category by recruiting owners into the brand from day one of cat ownership, Sheba is providing an accessible yet premium proposition for retailers to tap into this opportunity.

The range will be available in two SKUs – Mixed Selection and Chicken & Salmon. The NPD also forms part of Sheba’s wider brand refresh, aimed at maintaining consumer engagement, whilst encouraging shoppers to trade up to more premium options that cater to various taste and nutritional needs. The refresh is set to support in increasing demand for the Sheba brand, helping to also onboard the next generation of pet parents.

Kittens make up 14% of the cat population and with 1 in 3 owners not changing the food they feed their pet since getting them, it presents a significant opportunity to drive lifelong value through premiumisation of the Cat Wet segment. Sheba is ideally placed to deliver on this, with the brand experiencing +5% value growth versus the broader cat wet single serve segment, which has seen +0.4% growth over the same period. As a result, to help retailers tap into this opportunity, the Sheba Kitten range has been carefully designed for kittens with grain free bite sizes, natural ingredients, vitamins, minerals and natural chunk and gravy colours.

Adelina Bizoi, Category & Market Activation Director at Mars Petcare, comments: “We know how important it is for new pet parents to find a reliable, nutritious, and appealing meal offering for their kitten. As a result, there is a significant opportunity for retailers to be stocking propositions that cater to all kitten need states, to catch the attention of this demographic. Sheba Kitten is the perfect range for retailers to stock to leverage this potential. Not only will the nutritional and taste benefits please kittens and their parents, but the range will recruit shoppers into the Sheba brand as early as possible within their pet’s lifespan. This will increase their chances of remaining loyal shoppers through adulthood as Sheba products become preferred by their pet, ultimately helping retailers to attract and retain sales long-term.”

Sheba Kitten Mixed Selection and Chicken & Salmon is available across the grocery, wholesale, convenience and specialist pet channels now. Both SKUs will be available in multipacks of 12 x 85g with an RRP of £6.87, as well as a multipack of 40 x 85g with an RRP of £18.47. The activity is also being supported by the Sheba brand refresh campaign, which is live now until June across TV and social media, with Digital OOH activity set to take place later in the campaign.

Furr Boost nominated for an Enterprise Vision Award

Furr Boost, the healthy hydration smoothie drink that scooped the Best Product Innovation Awards at both PetQuip and the PIF Awards in 2022 is now adding to its success in 2024 by finding two major retail and wholesale stockists in The Range and Copdock Mill. It has also been nominated in the Best Retail Category at the Enterprise Vision Awards...

Furr Boost, the healthy hydration smoothie drink that scooped the Best Product Innovation Awards at both PetQuip and the PIF Awards in 2022 is now adding to its success in 2024 by finding two major retail and wholesale stockists in The Range and Copdock Mill. It has also been nominated in the Best Retail Category at the Enterprise Vision Awards.

Already stocked by Pets at Home, B&M, Jollyes and with a nationwide distribution deal already with Pedigree Wholesale ensuring that Furr Boost is now available in pet shops right across the country, the addition of The Range and Copdock Mill has come as an added bonus for the brand.

Since opening their first store in Plymouth in 1989, The Range has become one of the fastest growing retail chains in the UK with 200 stores nationwide stocking 140,000 products across 16 departments. Like so many retailers, The Range has a growing pet department seeing the importance of this continually growing market sector and the need for buying convenience for pet owners.

Copdock Mill is one of the largest independent distributors of animal food supplies and accessories in the South East of England with a chain of country stores across East Anglia, Suffolk and up to Northamptonshire. This will provide Furr Boost the opportunity to grow across these regions and to find a presence in the country store market.

To top off what has already been a successful 2024 for Louise Toal and her team at Furr Boost, they have also made the finals in the Retail Category at the Enterprise Visions Awards. The EVAs which are sponsored by Nat West Bank are the UK’s largest business awards dedicated solely to women and celebrate extraordinary women driving businesses forward.

Following a successful 20 year stint as a technical manager in the food industry, Louise Toal created her range of Furr Boost smoothie drinks after her Beagle, Phoebe at the age of 18 months became unwell with bladder problems which after investigations with her vet, were linked to the dog’s food. Using her technical background, Louise then started experimenting with protein shakes to help flush out Phoebe’s system and to provide her with the hydration that she needed when she was refusing to drink enough water in the summer months. This led to the creation of the Furr Boost range of smoothies.

Each of Furr Boost’s recipes contains a meat, fruit and vegetable, along with added oils and vitamins, so it’s more than a hydration drink, it supports the dog’s wellbeing in areas such as digestion, skin and coat, anxiety, metabolism and immunity.

Furr Boost can be used in a variety of ways. Served frozen, it can be placed in a Kong Toy or lick mat for dog training or as a distraction, or simply given to a dog as a tasty icy treat. Unfrozen, it can be added as a topper to meals or on hot days, simply pour into a bowl for instant hydration.

Furr Boost is a sustainable product using packaging materials which are recyclable avoiding single use plastic as each smoothie is available in a 400 ml Tetra Pak Carton. It is available in 7 tasty varieties.

Not only are the drinks ideal for active dogs but they are also great to give senior dogs when they are nearing the end of their lives as they provide comfort and balanced nutrition. They are also gaining popularity with vets who see the benefit of giving dogs extra hydration and nutrition when they are getting older or are unwell.

Commenting on the deal with The Range and Copdock Mill and their EVA nomination Louise said: “We are absolutely delighted to be in The Range and Copdock Mill. This allows more of our customers to buy Furr Boost at their convenience and it is great to see our products alongside some of the most prestigious and well known names in the pet market. To be nominated for an EVA is also an incredible honour and to be nominated amongst such prestigious company.”

Scoff Paper launches edible wedding cards for dogs

With around 12 million dogs now playing an important role in families across the UK, it's no surprise that pet friendly weddings are on the rise. Due to popular demand, Scoff Paper has launched a range of wedding celebration cards in chicken and bacon flavours, to ensure well-loved pooches are included in the big day.

With around 12 million dogs now playing an important role in families across the UK, it's no surprise that pet friendly weddings are on the rise. Due to popular demand, Scoff Paper, the world’s only makers of edible greeting cards for dogs, has launched a range of delicious wedding celebration cards, in irresistible chicken and bacon flavours, to ensure well-loved pooches are included in the big day.

Cards such as ‘be our ring bearer’, ' be my best man ', and ‘be my bridesmaid’, have been created to help owners create a sense of occasion as they invite their four-legged family member to play a key part in their special day.

Other products in the range include ‘my mum and dad just got married’, as well as versions for same sex couples, congratulations cards and cards simply to say ‘I love you’. Scoff Paper cards are made with potatoes and natural flavourings, contain no nasty ingredients or rawhide, and are complementary to a dogs healthy diet.

The company, dedicated to making tasty and unique treats for dogs, also produces pens with dog-friendly, edible ink - so loved-up couples and wedding guests can write personalised messages knowing it will be safe for pooches to scoff.

According to a study by Guide Dogs, since 2022, 94% of dog owners getting married want to give their pets a starring role in their nuptials, with furry friends regularly taking centre stage as ring bearers, flower dogs and honoured guests as couples say I do.

Gemma Connolly, founder of Scoff Paper, which designs and produces up to 2million edible cards for dogs every year at the firm’s bespoke, UK-based factory says: “Nothing gives us more pleasure than helping dog owners say I love you with a meaningful and tasty treat. We make our cards based on consumer demand, and in the last year, the request for wedding-related products has rocketed. We produce cards for major high-street retailers, but are always happy to consider bespoke requests, like pet marriage certificates, place names and personalised cards too.”

Gemma, who is set to marry her long term partner, Matthew, and is planning her own dog-friendly wedding this summer, adds: "As a puppy raiser for Guide Dogs, I’m well aware that a major event, like a wedding, can be fun and exciting for dog, but can also become overwhelming and stressful. I am carefully planning our big day around my dog, Bertie, to maximise the joy and pleasure for all involved, and I always urge dog owners to do the same.”

Scoff Paper makes cards for many occasions, from weddings, birthdays and gotcha days, to niche events and just to say ‘I love you’. The products are available to buy online at www.scoffpaper.com, at major and independent pet supply retailers throughout the UK, such as Pets at Home and Pets Corner, and selected gift retailers, including John Lewis and Daylesford Organic.

Dorwest directors Jo and Ben Boughton-White are supporting the 100 & First Foundation, whose mission is to reduce prisoners re-offending.

The 100 & First Foundation is a charity that runs courses in prisons with the aim of changing offenders’ mindsets. They believe in giving offenders the inspiration, hope and self-worth to create a positive personal change to prevent re-offending. Using powerful, inspirational real-life experiences as frameworks for beneficiaries to create and drive their own change, Managing Director and co-Founder Will Fraser launched 100 & First in 2020, inspiring change by starting ‘inside the prison’ and ‘inside the person’.

The Bars to Business project teaches entrepreneurial competencies such as creative problem solving and taking initiative, to help ex-offenders start their own businesses and boost employability generally.

Over a 4-week course, prisoners recognise a small business idea, develop the necessary entrepreneurial competencies and produce a simple business plan to effectively communicate their idea. To conclude the course, prisoners must deliver a pitch to an audience of family, friends, senior prison staff and business leaders.

Jo and Ben have recently been part of this pitch panel, giving feedback to potential entrepreneurs, drawing from their own experience. This concluding event consolidates course learning and gives them a profound sense of achievement that previously they would not have thought possible.

Jo said: “The Bars to Business project was a pleasure to be part of, supporting our local community and helping ex-offenders grow their entrepreneurial skills, looking to return to society successfully with a fantastic business plan.”

On top of all of this involvement, Jo and Ben are also proud to continue to be involved and sit on the EAB (Employment Advisory Board) at HMP Portland.

On  14th June, 100 & First Foundation walked 52km, taking 450m of elevation to raise awareness of the alarmingly high level of reoffending (52%) within the UK.

Doodle’s Deli has expanded its pre-packed range with three new treats. The new lines are Veal Ribs, Smoked Venison Shank Skin, and Venison Tendons.

These treats are air-dried to lock in flavour and are high in protein whilst boasting a variety of health benefits for dogs, such as supporting dental hygiene.

Naturally long-lasting, the treats are free from artificial ingredients, making them the perfect dental chew. They may help dogs across various problem areas, such as supporting the removal of plaque and tartar build-up, promoting healthy joints, and helping strengthen jaw muscles whilst being naturally low in fat. Many products contain naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids, which are great healthy add-ons during treat time.

The pre-packed range was initially developed specifically for customers who prefer to avoid buying loose natural treats: the pouches are resealable to allow for multiple uses and for consumers to store at home without unpleasant odours. Retailers can offer the range alongside the loose portfolio in-store, or for those who do not range loose treats, this is a suitable alternative to range in a treats aisle.

Doodle’s Deli is the specialist pet exclusive destination for 100% natural, easily digestible treats, and it is available exclusively to the specialist pet trade through Pedigree Wholesale. The range now features over 150 lines in various proteins and formats and offers free in-store support and display solutions so you can sell the range with a strong first impression and impactful merchandising.

Offering above average retailer margins, the new pre-packed venison and veal lines weigh between 50g and 120g and retail between £5.99 and £9.99. Sold in cases of 8, the brand-new Doodle’s Deli pre-packed range is available now through Pedigree Wholesale and is exclusively available to the specialist pet trade.

Participants will be encouraged to snap a picture with their certificate at the end of the Treasure Hunt and upload it to social media using the hashtag #PointerTreasureHunt. A winner from each location will be chosen at random, but the freebies don’t stop there! Birmingham Dogs Home has appointed Dr Naomi Bradford as its new Head Veterinary Surgeon, a move that is set to significantly enhance the quality of care at the charity’s own clinic.

Naomi, who graduated from Nottingham University Vet School, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role at the charity’s Solihull centre.

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum raises funds for assistance dog charity

Artisan ice cream company Baboo Gelato is donating 5p from every tub of Doggy Doggy Yum Yum sold to Dogs for Good...

With the hot weather now here, dog owners will be able to treat their canine friends to an award-winning tasty frozen treat manufactured by artisan ice cream company, Baboo Gelato based in Dorset. As well as giving their fur  babies a tasty treat, customers will also be fundraising for leading dog charity Dogs for Good.

5p from every tub of the doggy frozen treat sold will be donated to Dogs for Good. Dogs for Good train dogs to help people affected by disability, dementia, autism, other conditions and mental-health challenges to live happier, healthier and more independent lives. These are dogs that open doors, that connect people and bring families together. Dogs that help make everyday life possible in so many ways.  A donation of £539.00 has already been presented to the charity from the manufacturers of Doggy Doggy Yum Yum.

In a letter from Tina Williams, Regional Fundraiser for Dogs for Good she thanked  Doggy Doggy Yum Yum for their support and said that the funds would be used towards a  puppy partnership helping to fund the training of one of their new puppy recruits.

Tina said,

“Puppy partnership is such a lovely tangible way to see the difference your support is making to us as you follow your puppy on the first stage of their journey into becoming a life changing assistance or community dog.”

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum was a Silver winner in the PetQuip Awards in 2022 and won Best New Product in the Pedigree Wholesale Awards.   It is stocked by a long list of dog friendly cafes, restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions and pubs as well as leading pet shops across the UK. The frozen treat is now manufactured in-house in a new purpose-built premises at the company’s Dorset base.

Made with 100% peanut butter (with no xylitol) and bananas which dogs find hard to resist, this frozen treat uses coconut milk instead of dairy so it is kinder to dogs’ tummies. Their new improved recipe also includesorganic agave syrup (rather than refined sugars),  Keepers Mix® Sensitive (0.25%) from herbal pet supplement company Dorwest and vegetable fibre.  If given as an occasional treat after a long walk in the countryside, the park or on the beach this tasty treat is perfect way to reward your dog.  Doggy Doggy contains no artificial flavourings, colours or refined sugars. The new ingredient change means that any ‘ultra processed food’ emulsifiers or stabilisers from the product have been removed something the manufacturers are extremely proud of.

Baboo Gelato was started by husband and wife team, Sam and Annie Hanbury after they moved to Dorset in 2012 and purchased a house with an overflowing garden and orchard. Inspired by their fruit, Annie went to Bologna to train as a professional gelatiere, before setting up a small artisanal manufacturing kitchen. They opened their first kiosk in West Bay Dorset and were overwhelmed by the wonderful response from the community. Local restaurants and pubs then wanted their product; other kiosks wanted to rebrand to carry Baboo Gelato and shops wanted them to make ice cream in tubs. They have now added kiosks in Lyme Regis, Weymouth and Swanage. The passion for the business lies in their use of quality ingredients, sourced locally where possible and not using flavourings, colours or pastes in the manufacture of their ice cream.

Sam Hanbury says: Much of our sales come from our kiosks which help us to know exactly what customers want.  This is how Doggy Doggy Yum Yum came about.  We found that people were buying ice cream for their dogs, and we were concerned that dogs are lactose intolerant.  We experimented with different ingredients, before creating an entirely lactose-free, emulsifier-free, stabiliser-free product.

“We are finding limitless demand during the summer not just from obvious pet retailers and specialist dog friendly places, but from ordinary cafés, pubs, restaurants, and tourist destinations.  It just seems that most savvy people involved in Food & Drink want some of the poochie pound and we can help with a classy product, well supported with point of sale which includes, stickers, leaflets, posters and an A-frame sign which comes complete with space to put a dog bowl underneath it.”

Doggy Doggy Yum Yum won a distribution deal two years ago with one of the largest pet wholesalers in the UK, Pedigree Wholesale Ltd which is allowing them to gain national distribution to pet shops across the UK. The product is now available to buy in prestigious pets shops such Pet Pavillion in London, Just For Pets and many more.

Dog owners warned to be vigilant during heatwave

Agria, The Kennel Club’s pet insurance provider, is urging other owners to be vigilant to the signs of heatstroke, and to ensure they keep their pets safe in the hot weather...

With soaring summer weather currently in full force in the UK, Agria, The Kennel Club’s pet insurance provider, and a dog owner from Newcastle are urging other owners to be vigilant to the signs of heatstroke, and to ensure they keep their pets safe in the hot weather.

The warning comes as the United Kingdom is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures that pose a serious risk to our pets if the necessary precautions aren’t taken. These include not walking their dog during the hottest part of the day, never leaving their dog in a car (even with the windows down or with air conditioning), and ensuring their dog has access to water and a shaded area.

One owner who knows the dangers of hot weather all too well is Jason Knights, from Newcastle upon Tyne - who, upon collecting his dogs from a kennel after returning from a weekend away last year, was devastated to see his beloved French Bulldog, Buddy, collapse at his feet. Buddy was breathing erratically and foaming at the mouth, having been allowed outside in the high heat, resulting in severe heatstroke.

While Buddy did eventually pull through, he had to spend four nights in hospital, costing nearly £3,500, and he will be on medication for the rest of his life.

Speaking of the ordeal, Jason commented: “When we arrived to collect Buddy, we could hear our other dog, Bowie, barking in distress. He was still barking agitatedly when he and Buddy were brought to reception and acting protectively towards him. Shortly afterwards, Buddy collapsed at my feet – it was a horrific experience.

“We were warned to expect the worst as his temperature was so high. Thankfully he did make it through, but we have to be extra cautious now to ensure he doesn’t get out of breath. He used to love long walks but now he’s limited to no more than a mile, and he’s not well enough to play much anymore.”

The Kennel Club is warning owners of the signs of heatstroke, which include:

  • Heavy panting, even when not exercising
  • Breathing problems
  • Tiredness
  • Stiffness
  • Dribbling
  • Confusion
  • Being sick, which can be bloody
  • Upset stomach, which can be bloody
  • Not walking in a straight line
  • Collapse
  • Fitting

Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club added: “Unfortunately dogs aren’t as good at dealing with hot weather as we are – while we can sweat, dogs cool down by panting but that isn’t enough, and can even be fatal.

“Not all owners are aware that it is just as dangerous to exercise their dogs in the heat of the day, as it is to leave them in a hot car - and this is especially true for those more at risk of heatstroke, such as overweight, elderly and flat-faced breeds. It is therefore vital to keep dogs cool this summer, and if showing signs of heatstroke, to get them to the vet as soon as possible.”

To help protect our nation’s pets this summer, The Kennel Club has also released practical advice to keep dogs safe in the heat:

Walks:

Walk your dog in the early morning or evening and avoid the midday sun. Choose shaded areas to walk in. Every dog is different – sometimes it might be too hot to take your dog on a walk at all. Always carry around water and something for them to drink from. Consider using a walking harness rather than a collar, as collars can press on their airways and stop them cooling down as effectively.

When travelling:

Never leave your dog in the car by themselves. Make sure your dog has a comfortable and cool spot in the car when travelling. Make regular stops and ensure your dog has access to water. Avoid travelling in the hottest parts of the day. Check all places you want to visit or stay at are dog-friendly.

At home:

Create a shaded space to keep your dog cool. Give them a paddling pool to splash around in. Add ice cubes to their water bowls.

Robin Hargreaves, Senior Veterinary Advisor at Agria Pet Insurance added, “If you suspect your pet has signs of heat stroke, then you should start the following first aid procedures immediately and consult your vet or your emergency out of hours service provider. Do not wait until symptoms develop further. The advice is: ‘Cool first, transport second’.”

Water is the most effective way to cool your pet, BUT this must always be done safely to avoid accidental water inhalation and drowning.

In young healthy dogs the recommended cooling method is to immerse the dog in water of any temperature that is cooler than the dog. If immersion is not possible, then use the advice below.

In older dogs, or dogs with underlying health problems, pouring water of any temperature that is cooler than the dog over them combined with air movement with a breeze, fan, or air conditioning is the safest/best option.

If water is not available, then move the pet to a cooler place without delay. (This could be an air-conditioned room, air-conditioned car, shaded space etc). Provide good air circulation, for example, using a fan, as this helps with the cooling.

Put ice packs on both sides of the neck near the windpipe to cool the blood vessels in the neck. This can also be done during transport.

Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water or provide ice cubes to lick.

Consider pre-cooling the interior of the car prior to travelling with the pet if a visit to the vet clinic is deemed necessary.

When you need to urgently cool your pets, new studies suggest that the temperature of the water is less important, as long as it is lower than the body temperature. 15-16 degrees is optimum, but in reality, you need to use whatever you have available to start the cooling as soon as possible. Wet towels are not recommended as this reduces the amount of heat lost by radiation, convection, and evaporation.

If you think your dog may have heatstroke it is vital that you immediately contact your vet while cooling them down. For further information, visit: thekennelclub.org.uk/heatstroke

Quirkiest dog friendly pubs in the UK revealed

The quirkiest dog-friendly pubs in the UK have been named by Eat Drink Meet, a new website that helps users discover nearby pubs, bars, and restaurants using unique filtering options.

Eat Drink Meet offers more than other websites, with options to filter to ‘dog-friendly’, ‘pubs with a view’, ‘gastro pubs’, and even discover local venues hosting pub quizzes and live music nights.

Perusing places that not only allow your pooch in, but make them feel like a valued patron isn’t always easy, but for the over 30% of UK households that own at least one dog, it’s essential! Below are the best options, ranked by Eat Drink Meet, featuring pubs perfectly placed for long walks, pick ‘n’ mix treat stations and a puppy napping area.

9. A Pub In The Park: The Old Bull & Bush, London

Any pet owner will know how much pups love a park, especially if it’s somewhere new for them to explore with their noses. The Old Bull & Bush, a stylish dog-friendly venue in the heart of London sits on the edge of Golders Hill Park, so is ideal for your furry friend to explore before or after you sit down for lunch. Plus, the park is home to the dog-friendly Golders Hill Park Zoo, a small yet charming attraction which is home to a number of exotic mammals, birds and even has a butterfly house!

8. The Perfect Pooch Playground: The Barnt Green Inn, Worcestershire

On the cusp of Lickey Hills, which offers impressive views across the  Midlands, is the Barnt Green Inn in Worcestershire. An extremely pet-friendly venue, this pub is surrounded by extensive country walks which allows dogs to run and play together to their hearts content. The wide-open beer garden also provides the perfect space to sit back, refuel, and rehydrate after a long walk. What’s more, just 300 yards up the road is a dog groomer, waiting to groom any mucky pups!

7. Tail-wagging snacks: The Three Crowns, Staffordshire

Locally famous for being a super accommodating dog-friendly pub, The Three Crowns in Stone near Stoke on Trent boasts a wide selection of treats for your pets. Anybody with a ‘pub dog’ will know how much of a game changer this is: no more longing eyes as your own dishes are served!

6. Dedicated Napping Area: The Traveller’s Rest, Caerphilly

Off-the-beaten-track in Caerphilly is The Traveller’s Rest, a rustic country pub with a passion for welcoming four-legged friends. Alongside a muddy boots and paws station for the discerning countryside rambler, the venue’s roaring fires have become something of a famous napping station for pups during colder months!

5. Pooch Pick N’ Mix: The Priory, Portbury (Bristol)

The Priory in Portbury is an acclaimed country pub near Bristol that goes one step further than offering your classic water bowl option. Owners can spoil their pooch to a selection of treats from the bar, giving them their own doggie pick n’ mix to peruse.

4. Where Your Dog Can Make A Spooky Friend: Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, Edinburgh

You may or may not be familiar with the tale of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier or Dandie Dinmont Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until the loyal pooch himself died on 14 January 1872. If you don’t, you and your dog can get familiar with him at Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, a dog-friendly pub in Edinburgh, where his spirit is still said to wander around. Patrons have reported hearing ghostly barks or feeling things brush against their legs. Supposedly more receptable to spirits than humans, your dog may enjoy getting acquainted with a friend from the beyond.

3. Become A Social Star: The Roundhay Fox, Roundhay (Leeds)

At The Roundhay Fox, located not too far from Leeds, your pup might just become a social media star. Not only is this charming country pub dog-friendly, it loves furry friends so much that it names a new ‘dog of the week’ every week! Recent showcases include Nelson the Akita, a charming black Labrador and the pub’s new ‘barktender’ in training. Could your pup be next?

2. For Your Festival-Going Pooch: The Honey Bee, Wilmslow

Is your pooch a festival fanatic? The Honey Bee in Wilmslow can cater for pups after a long day at DogFest, which comes to Tatton Park in Knutsford this month! Much like their owners, our four-legged friends need to refresh and rejuvenate after a festival, and with a dedicated ‘hydration station’ complete with lots of open spaces outside and roaring fires inside should the temperature drop, the Honey Bee is the ideal place to do this. It’s less than a 15-minute drive from Tatton Park!

Cornish pet business wins prestigious wholesale contracts

The Pets Larder, which recently changed its name from the Natural Cornish Pet Shop, has recently won two prestigious wholesale contracts with major retailers in Cornwall...

A Cornish Pet Shop that started life as a small shop on doggy day-care premises in St. Erth has come a long way since its early days in 2017.  Now with large warehouse facilities, its own range of quality pet food and treats, a wholesale division, countless awards and as one of the largest pet shops in Cornwall, The Pets Larder, which recently changed its name from the Natural Cornish Pet Shop, has recently won two prestigious wholesale contracts with major retailers in Cornwall.

The Pets Larder is headed by Katy Peck who was the founder of the Natural Cornish Pet Shop. Katy has been the creative side of the business developing the products and branding for the Natural Cornish Pet range of products which include Alfora pet food, fish treats, chews, peanut butter and a whole host of other best selling products which are now sold wholesale to the trade. She has also started to develop a range of new products under The Pets Larder umbrella as well and these will be launched to the trade in the coming weeks.

The Pets Larder’s new wholesale contracts are with Trevaskis Farm and Great Cornish Food.  Both are renowned in Cornwall for selling high quality produce.

Katy said: “Many of our customers discover the range when needing to look outside the box when faced with dietary and health issues for their pets. We stock an extensive range of grain free foods, chews and treats. The products we stock are chosen for their simplistic transparent ingredient lists, (containing no nasties) and, using our knowledge of what to look for when shopping for our beloved companions. Many dogs, cats and companion animals like humans suffer from intolerances and variety is definitely the spice of life.

“We have a mixture of dog friendly cafes, farm shops, groomers and independent pet shops stocking our range of Cornish treats. It is our aim to establish a core range of basic pet care products for all companion animals and, to become the one stop shop for owners’ care needs. Our team has extensive backgrounds in animal care, and firsthand experience with a range of pet health care issues.”

The business was awarded Pet Shop of the Year in 2021 at the PetQuip Awards and the Most Sustainable Pet Products Supplier in the South West Awards.

More than just a Store: National Pet Shop Day to celebrate services and solutions on the high street

Johnson’s Veterinary Products has launched of the first ever National Pet Shop Day (Saturday 13th July 2024) as a way of celebrating the huge breadth of support, products, services and advice that high street retailers are able to provide direct to pet owners who have concerns about their animal’s health and wellbeing...

When Johnson’s Veterinary Products surveyed pet owners as part of its 2023 report into UK purchasing habits, it discovered that over half of respondents (57%) would speak to the vet in order to remedy a pet’s flea issue, despite the majority stating they find pet shops and stores to be ‘knowledgeable’ and with an opinion that could be trusted.

It is this startling fact that has led Johnson’s to announce the launch of the first ever National Pet Shop Day, as a way of celebrating the huge breadth of support, products, services and advice that high street retailers are able to provide direct to pet owners who have concerns about their animal’s health and wellbeing.

On Saturday 13th July 2024, Johnson’s will be encouraging pet shops and stores across the UK to throw open their doors and invite pet owners to come in and discover more about how they can offer viable, affordable options for dealing with commonly occurring minor ailments such as fleas, ticks, worms, or other general healthcare issues.

Paul Gwynn, Managing Director at Johnson’s Veterinary Products, explained: “Pet shops are the local health and wellbeing hubs of the pet world, but we find that many people are often so rooted to their longstanding routines, that they perhaps don’t even consider that they can also get experienced advice about a whole host of frequent minor pet healthcare issues whilst picking-up their other pet essentials in store.

“Pet shops and stores have a wealth of knowledge within their teams that has been built over many years, in some cases decades. They can often help to spot the signs of and give advice about fleas, ticks, worms and other minor healthcare problems and therefore are well placed to provide practical advice and product solutions for both these, and a range of other, more general, wellbeing concerns directly in store.

“With National Pet Shop Day, we want to mark the ongoing, positive contribution that these pet shops and stores make to society, and in doing so provide animal lovers with the confidence that they can handle their pet’s conditions effectively and efficiently, without always breaking the bank. These retailers are far more than simply a point of purchase – they are the bedrock of the pet owning community and are always ready and willing to help.”

National Pet Shop Day will be backed with an extensive press and social media campaign, with Johnson’s providing a number of product samples, and procurement offers to those retailers getting involved.

A dedicated website crammed with promotional ideas, downloadable content, branded goodies, and practical marketing advice will also be available to help pet shops, stores and retailers stimulate increased footfall and celebrate the day to its fullest.

UK pet firms would benefit from more part-time working

Recruitment specialist Lynda Ward believes that UK pet companies would benefit from employing more part-time staff in certain roles...

Recruitment specialist Lynda Ward believes that UK pet companies would benefit from employing more part-time staff in certain roles.

Lynda said: “Since founding Pet Trade Solutions in 2000 I have specialised in bespoke recruitment for the pet industry and have headhunted from within and outside the industry, for UK and overseas clients and roles at all levels. Until now I have never seen so many good people seeking part-time employment.

“Prior to setting up Pet Trade Solutions I was a sales manager for over 15 years with three major pet food companies so have an in-depth understanding of the requirements of the jobs and during that period part-time working wouldn’t have been countenanced.

“However, times have changed and major barriers can now be overcome. For example, field sales positions are no longer hampered by employers understandably not wanting their company cars to sit idle – many sales people now prefer to use their own cars and receive a car allowance.

“Plus, office-based roles no longer depend on employees living close to a main office – remote working, including online meetings as needed, now enables a much broader choice for both parties with part-time (or job-share) easily organised.

“In particular, field sales part-time roles can offer great advantages in flexibility for businesses needing field sales coverage but lacking the budget for either employing their first sale  sperson or increasing their sales force. Areas needing less coverage than others can be addressed perfectly by a part-time person, so leaving more time for a full-time employee to concentrate on the areas needing more visits.

“Likewise, our industry now has many experienced field sales personnel with great contacts who would welcome the option of working part-time in order to have a better work/life balance or, indeed, for some who have left to return to us.

“Time will tell, but it’s worth considering could part-time work…work for you?”
