Independent pet shop closes after 40 years
H&J Pet Supplies in Dundee has closed down after 40 years following the retirement of 72-year-old owner Hugh Burke. The dad-of-five is heading for a well-earned break after his years of dedication to the pet trade. The store in the Keiller Shopping Centre closed on Saturday. "A lot of people used to come to my shop for help and advice — I think we have been a very trusted establishment through the years and I take pride in that,” said Hugh. He started his career in the pet-selling business in Dens Road Market where he sold goldfish. “I had a small tank of fish and my own little stall at the market — it was great. “It moved on to a store in the Wellgate Market Hall then to the store in the Keiller/Forum Centre, where I’ve been for 36 years. “I’ve had a great time and it’s been a laugh a minute, but I feel it’s time to move on and enjoy my retirement.”
