Pets at Home has launched a new retail chain for dogs offering grooming services and a range of accessories.
The dogs-only store is called Barkers and the first shop has opened in Wilmslow in Cheshire.
Dogs are now more popular than cats in the UK and Barkers is designed to capitalise on consumers desire to splash out on their pet.
Barkers will offer a food hall, accessory shop and dog spa. It will also sell bespoke bedding and a range of grooming services, including massages.
Peter Pritchard, commercial director of Pets, said: “Our objective was to create the best dog shop in the world and I think we’ve done it.
"This is different from any store we have created before, with an environment which is for discerning dogs and the people who love them.
"We’ve had a really warm welcome from the dog owners of Wilmslow and while it’s very early days, we’re excited by the potential of the brand.”
Pets at Home was floated on the stock market in early March with a valuation of just over £1.2bn.
The company says it will monitor the success of the Barkers store before deciding whether to open further sites. The Wilmslow stores includes interactive toys, running fresh water and sensory zones so dogs and their owners are encouraged to spend time in the shop.
