Concerns were raised about Diane’s Pet Store, in Lawsons Road, after pictures allegedly taken of mice in the shop were shared online.

The photos, which have now been deleted, appeared to show dozens of white mice crammed into the same cage, along with mice so young they had no fur.

The images sparked fear among animal-lovers, and the post was widely shared on Facebook before it was removed.

Wyre Council said the shop was found to be operating within the terms of its licence following a visit last Thursday.

A person speaking at Diane’s Pet Store, who declined to give their name, hit back at online critics, and called the people posting the images on Facebook “morons”.

They said: “We haven’t got any mice running about. They are all running in their cages.

“There are some very sad people around.

“We have done nothing wrong.”

A Wyre Council spokesman said: “The council carried out an inspection last week (July 12) of the pet store and at that time did not find any breaches of their licence.

“However, we will be carrying out period checks of the premises to ensure that they are compliant with their licence.”

She added: “If members of the public do have concerns about licensed pet shops, these concerns should be raised with us so that compliance checks can be made”
