Owners walk their dogs on average 18 miles each week

The 190 dog owners, who took part in a recent survey, collectively walk their four-legged friends 3,462 miles every week, just three miles short of walking from London to New York...

The survey, called ‘You & Your Dog’, was carried out by family-run dog specialist Muddy Paw.

The dog owners were asked nine questions to find out about their walking habits, number of dogs and toys they owned, the most popular breeds and names.

Coming in first place for the most popular breed is the Labrador. The second most popular breed is the working Cocker Spaniel and in third place is the Border Collie.  Of these dogs, Alfie is the most popular name among the 190 owners, closely followed Ozzie and Milo.

58% of Muddy Paws fans own one dog, 24% have two, and 18% have three or more pooches. They really are considered part of the family. So much so that 64% of owners surveyed allow their dog to sleep on their bed. It’s not all a case of ‘let sleeping dogs lie’ though, as the fans collectively own 2,720 toys, making playtime an important part of time spent with their dogs.

It seems Muddy Paws fans also talk to their dog (who doesn’t?) and the most common questions they ask their canine companion are ‘Would you like us to get another dog so you could have a friend?’ and ‘Are you happy?’. There are hundreds of bizarre questions that the fans ask their dogs, but the strangest question from all answers was ‘Why are you scared of moustaches?’. And it seems moustaches aren’t the only thing dogs are afraid of. The five most common fears are the hoover, the dog’s own shadow, loud noises, the vet and other dogs.
