Pet shop manager is voted UK Young Retailer of the Year

Twenty-five-year-old Ashley Gale, manager of Not Just Pets in Larkhall, Bath, has been voted UK Retailer of the Year by the British Independent Retailer Association...

Twenty-five-year-old Ashley Gale, manager of Not Just Pets in Larkhall, Bath, has been voted UK Retailer of the Year by the British Independent Retailer Association.

Ashley actually won two national awards at the British Independent Retailer Association (bira) conference and gala held at the Cotswold Water Park. The awards were presented by Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf and Brittas Empire fame.

His first award was for the Young Retailer of the Year in his division of Pet Product Retailer Association (PPRA).

Ashley then went up against four strong candidates, who had won their divisions, for the overall Young Retailer of the Year award. The other divisions included hardware, cookware, agriculture, gardening and fashion. The judges were unanimous in their vote and chose Ashley as winner of the main award.

Ashley was nominated for this award after all his hard work and dedication to Bath-based Not Just Pets. He joined the company as a 16-year-old Saturday worker in 2005.

Enjoying his work and engaging with the business and customers, he has made rapid progress and was offered the manager position at the Larkhall store last year.

Ashley's prizes include Champagne, certificates and two plaques as well as a place at the prestigious Oxford Summer School for Retail at Oxford University. The School offers the best training and development for retail managers.

Not Just Pets owner Janine Tozer (pictured with Ashley) said: “We are absolutely delighted and thrilled for Ashley to win this award and we are very proud of him.

"The prize of a place at the Oxford Summer School for Retail is fantastic and, from an ex-graduate of that school I can confidently say he will thoroughly enjoy it and will learn so much.

"Ashley deserves this award for his hard work and commitment to our company. He is always organised, dedicated and ready for a challenge and he shows such an interest in our customers, always putting the customer first.”

The awards, sponsored by Towergate Insurance, are held by bira to recognise young independent retailers and reward them in their efforts.

Winning national awards hasn't just happened overnight for Ashley Gale. It has taken him nine years to rise from Saturday worker to pet shop manager, and he's constantly learning skills to elevate him to greater success.

Here Ashley reveals what makes him tick.

How have you worked your way up to your current position?

I began working with Not Just Pets as a Saturday worker at the age of 16 in 2005 and progressed to working in the bigger team at the main Bath store where I was eventually given my own department, the Aquatics section, to run. I was able to turn this section around and maintain nine coldwater and 18 tropical tanks to a very high standard. We introduced new products including new tanks and lighting which were a hit with customers. Last year I was offered the management post at our Larkhall store and I was delighted to step up to this new challenge. I now run this store single-handedly. I can say that I have really worked my way up from the bottom rung to the post of manager.

What qualities do you bring to your position?
I feel I have contributed to the success of the business by showing true commitment, always wanting to learn new things, able to turn my hand to any job, being a proactive member of the team, suggesting ideas for the business, giving excellent customer service and having a passion for my work. I have undertaken various training courses so that I can constantly improve my knowledge of all things pet- and business-related.

Give us an example of how you drive footfall at the Larkhall store?
One example of one of my ideas is that since taking over the role of manager I regularly look at the sales figures and numbers of customers, average spend per customer etc to see where I can improve sales and find out when and why customers are buying. I want to drive customers to our store and recently noticed that the average spend per customer was just under £20, so I have set up a monthly draw whereby customers spend £20 or more and are entered into a free draw for a small prize voucher at the end of the month. This has already seen an increase in spend per customer.

How are you perceived by your customers?
I have been told I am more like a friend to customers rather than a salesperson in the way I treat them and I think this is key to the future success of the business.

What are your goals for the future?
I am grateful to have learned so much in the nine years I have been with Not Just Pets and I have a passion for this industry. I would like to possibly own my own pet store in the future and I am also keen to see high standards of care and responsible pet ownership across the trade. I have considered working alongside organisations such as NOAH or with local council licence inspectors to help further the cause of high standards of animal care, or even visit breeders and kennels to check conditions for breeding of pet animals.

How will you be developing your current role at Not Just Pets?
It is early days for me as manager of a pet shop and for the moment I want to see the Larkhall shop grow and I want to be the best that I can be at Not Just Pets. I want to make this shop more profitable, encourage shop growth and improve sales, and come up with ideas to help this shop always looking good. I will be looking at ways to improve margins, looking at price matching and talking to suppliers to get the best deals for the future. I want to make sure we have good quality products for customers and offer the best nutrition advice. My goal is to be recommended by other people, not just customers but also vets and the like. I love to hear customers say “so-and-so recommended you” and I am working towards much more of that. I would also like to be more involved with the bigger picture for the company and possibly attend more trade shows and the like to get a greater insight to the industry.

Why do you think you won the two retailer awards?
I always put  the customer first. I also think about the effect anything I do has on the company. I'm extremely easy to get along with and as I stated earlier the customers regard me as their friend.

Have you got any pets yourself?
I have a cat named Misty – she is 11-years-old – and large tropical fish tanks. I don't give the fish names but I do have four shrimp named Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and Starscream.

Hertford Pet Supplies closes after 15 years

The only independent pet shop in Hertford closed at weekend after 15 years of trading in the town. Hertford Pet Supplies in Fore Street opened for the last time on Saturday to the dismay of its customers...

The only independent pet shop in Hertford closed at weekend after 15 years of trading in the town. Hertford Pet Supplies in Fore Street opened for the last time on Saturday to the dismay of its customers.

Owner Bob Ash will be retiring, but the decision to shut up shop was also partly down to competition from the recently-opened Pets at Home chain in the town and a rise in online shopping.

He said: “I think the town has changed completely. The independents are gradually disappearing. It’s fine if you want to eat or drink but the little independents are dying.”

Mr Ash, 75, said: “We shall miss all our customers. A lot of them are more our friends than customers. We’ve loved every minute of it.”

The shop, which opened in 1999, employs four people, including a Saturday boy.

The closure of the pet shop has upset customers. Hertford resident Karen Turner, who regularly attended with dog Bonser, said in a letter to the local newspaper the Hertfordshire Mercury:  “The thing that is lost is the customer care and the love lavished on those pets who went into Bob’s shop as well."

Hagen sign up to exhibit new range of dog toys at PATS Harrogate

Hagen will be attending its first PATS Harrogate show with one of the most exciting launches in the company’s history. "We will be launching a complete range of licensed dog toys under one of the biggest names in children’s activity toys," said Paul Trott...

Visitors to PATS Harrogate in September will be greeted by a host of new exhibitors, including RC Hagen.

Paul Trott, from Hagen said: “This year we will be attending PATS Harrogate with one of the most exciting launches in our company’s history. We will be launching a complete range of licensed dog toys under one of the biggest names in children’s activity toys.

“The reach and recognition of this brand are enormous and the innovative range itself is superb in terms of quality and price. A full announcement with more detail will follow in the trade press but trust us, you won’t want to miss this one.”

Manufacturers like Hagen have identified PATS as the best place to showcase their products to UK retailers and overseas buyers, and an increasing number of them are newcomers to the exhibition.

Companies like Nutriment Ltd will be making their first appearance at the show on September 14-15 and sales director Peter Nicholas said: “PATS provides the ideal environment to meet the business partners we most need to develop our business. New partnerships are crucial to the long-term success of the company. We will be showcasing our new range of treats and latest complete raw meals.”

Other new exhibitors to PATS Harrogate include Crystal Feeds, The Pet Business, PureFlax, Silverprint Pets, Microfibre Store, Countryside Products, Bartholomews, Wagytail, Oakdale Products and Spotless Punch.

Wagytail is a relatively new company producing hand-made dog fleeces and coats plus matching bandanas, collars and leads. “After visiting PATS Sandown in March we decided that exhibiting at Harrogate would be a fantastic opportunity for Wagytail to sign up new retailers and to advertise our products,” explained Laura Close, who runs the business with her sister Amy.

John Grant, of Oakdale Products, has been a regular visitor to PATS for several years and has now decided to exhibit for the first time. “Our full range of wild-bird care products will offer pet stores, buyers and online retailers strong sales opportunities in this ever popular category. We will showcase our new range of premium filled feeders alongside our autumn promotions aimed at the independent retailer.”

Grace Liddle, of PureFlax, is another visitor-turned-exhibitor. “I can’t believe how the show has grown over such a short length of time. Going to PATS Harrogate as an exhibitor will help to promote our product and give us the opportunity to inform people about.

“At the moment we have one product – flax oil. We grow, cold press and distribute the product from our farm in Yorkshire. Customers like the fact that our product is pure and effectively comes straight from the field. We hope to achieve more awareness about PureFlax and sign up new retailers,” said Grace.

An increasing number of overseas companies are choosing to exhibit at PATS and two Danish companies – Eldorado and Orbiloc – will be making their debuts.

Torben Bøgwad, of Eldorado said: “We have received a lot of requests from the UK, so we felt PATS would be the ideal place to meet retailers face to face. We will try to demonstrate how our iMARC pet tag engraver is a good way of making extra income.”

Robert Phillips has exhibited at the show in the past but at Harrogate in September he will be unveiling a new brand called Natural Choice Treats. “Our dog treats (sticks) are natural and gluten-free. We hope to find new customers and wholesalers, as well as promote the range to our existing customer base.”

As well as seeing new exhibitors at PATS Harrogate, visitors can expect a warm welcome from regulars like Beaphar UK, Bern Pet Food, The Company of Animals, Eurostitch, Group55, James & Steel, KONG, Mars Pet Care, Royal Canin/James Wellbeloved, and Wagg. With still over three months to go before the show opens, more than 130 companies have signed up to take part and showcase their products.

The exhibition will have the same layout as in 2013, using Halls B, C and M of Harrogate International Centre.

PATS Harrogate will also be full of popular visitor features, including the New Products Showcase and Awards, a full programme of free seminars, and the Grooming Workshop.

Pets At Home expands private label Pepper's Dog Treats

Pets at Home has engaged Sun Branding Creative to design packaging for a new range of specially made dog treats for its private label Pepper’s Dog Treats...

Pets at Home has engaged Sun Branding Creative to design packaging for a new range of specially made dog treats for its private label Pepper’s Dog Treats.

The new products build on the launch of the brand last year with Sun Branding Creative designing packs for the special range of gluten and wheat free dog treats which are handmade in Cornwall.

Head of private brands at Pets at Home, Claire Gavin, commented: “Pets At Home launched Pepper’s Dog Treats last year to such success that we wanted to grow the brand for our customers and their canine friends. We worked with Sun Branding Creative to launch the brand, so naturally we wanted the agency to be involved in the diversification of the range.”

Senior designer at Sun Branding Creative, Simon Inman, who illustrated each pack with an individual scene that continues through to the back of the pack featuring a playful dog character, added: “The dog treat category is a crowded space and so Pets At Home was looking for a design that stood out on shelf.

"There are not many dog treat brands exploring illustration on-pack, so it was a project we had a lot of fun with. We chose a style that added personality and character for the new range.”

With seven different variations on offer Inman’s scenes complement each flavour, for example the Luscious Lamb Squares packaging features a dog dressed in sheep’s clothing.

Pooch and Mutt moves into Ireland with Glenkrag Ltd

Pooch and Mutt has announced that its range of seven, ethically-made, premium dog treats is now available through Glenkrag, the largest wholesaler to the pet, aquatic and garden trade in Ireland...

Pooch and Mutt has announced that its range of seven, ethically-made, premium dog treats is now available through Glenkrag, the largest wholesaler to the pet, aquatic and garden trade in Ireland.

With Pooch and Mutt's success in the British pet industry, it is no surprise that they have teamed up with the big pet wholesaler to expand into Ireland.

Manging director Guy Blaskey states: “We are very proud to have Pooch and Mutt treats in the Republic of Ireland.

"By teaming up with Glenkrag Ltd, Ireland's leading pet wholesaler, Pooch and Mutt treats will now be available to dogs outside of the UK. We are very pleased to help more dogs lead happy, healthy lives."

Pooch and Mutt's mini bone-shaped biscuits are hand-baked and low in calorie, so owners don't have to worry about giving their dog too many treats.

They are wheat-gluten free, so the range of treats can be suitable for dogs with allergies and food restrictions.

Each colourful tube of Pooch and Mutt treats has natural additives to help with specific issues dogs may encounter, such as the top selling “Fresh Breath” from the range of seven treats. The ingredients of parsley and peppermint oil help to combat bad breath in dogs.

The seven treats are available in brightly coloured 125g tubes, with approximately 150 treats in each for dogs to enjoy. Each tube is £1.50 + VAT to trade, with an RRP of £2.99.

Dog lovers who have made a difference for man’s best friend over the past twelve months have been honoured in the annual Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme (GCDS) Awards and KC Dog Awards.

A special prize-giving ceremony was held at the Kennel Club in London’s Mayfair to celebrate the efforts of organisations and individuals nationwide who have invested time and energy into helping to train dogs, educate owners on the importance of responsible dog ownership, and campaigned for dog owners’ rights throughout the year.

The Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme was set up in 1992 to promote socially acceptable dogs by way of creating responsible dog owners, and is now the largest dog training scheme in the UK. It provides a quality standard of training for dogs and owners, and incorporates many domestic obedience exercises, with over 465,000 certificates of achievement having being awarded to owners and their dogs who have successfully passed the scheme’s tests. There are currently around 1,800 dog training clubs and other organisations around the country actively administering the scheme.

Island Dog Training Club, Guernsey

Kennel Club Listed Status Club

Island Dog Training Club was chosen as the overall winner of the GCDS Awards for their dedication, commitment and outstanding support in promoting the scheme in 2013.

The winners of the KC Dog Awards were selected on account of their positive approach to supporting the rights of dog owners their local area. This year’s winners are:

Speaking at the ceremony, Kennel Club Vice Chairman, Mike Townsend, said: “These awards are an opportunity for us to credit the actions taken by politicians, local authorities, groups and individuals to ensure that the UK’s well trained dogs and their owners continue to enjoy maximum access to our countryside and urban open spaces.

“We really do feel that each of the winners and nominees have done fantastic work in promoting responsible dog ownership in local communities and each deserves a huge vote of thanks.  The enthusiasm and dedication they have shown help organisations like the Kennel Club to promote responsible dog ownership and canine welfare, and we extend our appreciation for helping us continue making a positive difference for dogs and their owners.”

Record number of British pet product suppliers head for Interzoo show
A record number of more than 55 British exhibitors will be heading off for Interzoo next week as part of the PetQuip-organised group...

A record number of 55 British exhibitors will be heading off for Interzoo next week as part of the PetQuip-organised group.

Interzoo, being held in Nuremberg between 29 May and 1June, is the world’s largest trade fair for pet supplies, and attracts buyers from around the world.

Most of the 55-strong group will be located within the British pavilion, where the PetQuip association will be organising and manning a UK pet product information stand that will provide support services for the UK exhibitors and a product service point for overseas buyers.

The majority of the exhibitors have received cash grants which were secured for the companies by PetQuip under UK Trade & Investment’s Tradeshow Access Programme.

Thirty-two of the companies will be exhibiting for the first time at Interzoo, and will be introducing many innovative products to international buyers.

Here's a rundown on some of the British contingent and what they'll be showcasing at Interzoo:

Accapi UK (Hall 7 – Stand 438) will be showing its award-winning Kurgo products designed to make travelling with dogs easy.  The innovative products protect dogs from harm and prevent them from causing a distraction to the driver.  Included in the range is a new Tru-Fit smart harness with video camera mount that can record the dog’s activity when out hiking or running.  The harness has all the features of the company’s standard in-car safety harness and the camera mount’s adjustment system creates a perfect fit and good stability for the camera.

Anco (9-521) will be exhibiting a number of new natural pet treats.  These include ‘Anco Naturals’, a range of gluten-free air-dried healthy dog treats and chews that contain no additives, preservatives, artificial colouring or flavours.  There are also six varieties of ‘Anco Bakes’ that are made with natural ingredients, together with ‘Anco Roots’ made from natural tree roots that are rich in vitamins and minerals.  The roots provide fun and when chewed they act as a natural toothbrush.  Completing the new items are ‘Anco Oceans’, a range of hypoallergenic and gluten-free treats made from 100 per cent fish.

Ancol (9-515) will be exhibiting its quality leather dog collars and leads together with an extensive range of accessories for cats, dogs and small animals.  These include items for grooming, play time, bedding and training.

Animate/Outhwaite Pet (9-522) will be exhibiting its new WalkingMate™ range of nylon collars, harnesses and leads for the first time.  The new LED collar and harness range requires only one battery, and can also be used as a normal collar or harness.  Prototypes of other LED items under development for both dogs and humans can be seen on the Animate stand.  Also on display will be dog coats, jumpers and an extensive Christmas range.  The company is looking to expand further into the European and the US markets, and the company’s European and US sales managers will be in attendance on the stand.

Animology (9-507) is expanding its range of quality shampoos and sprays that are available for pet owners, vets, retailers and groomers.  The new Animology Hand gel is a medical grade formulation that kills 99.9 per cent of bacteria.  The product is available either in a convenient 50ml bottle or in a 250ml bottle.  Another recent development is Animology Clean Sheets that have the same formulation as the successful Animal Fox Poo shampoo.  The textured material is designed to lift any dirt, smell or grease from a dog’s coat, and the product gives the same result as a dry shampoo.

Barking Heads & Meowing Heads (9-542) is a natural range of cat and dog foods that contains only the best quality natural healthy ingredients.  The company will be launching a new complete wet food range for both cats and dogs that has been designed to complement its popular dry selection.  The UK manufactured wet foods are packaged in humorous and colourful branding to ensure real impact on the shelf.  The company’s complete dry food for both cats and dogs including general maintenance, puppy, light and senior diet ranges will also be exhibited.

BecoThings – eco friendly pet (9-514) will be showing its new beds that are produced from eco-friendly materials.  The beds are durable and comfortable to suit any dog’s sleeping position.  They are machine washable and come in a range of three colours and four sizes.  The use of natural fibres results in the Beco Bed being hypoallergenic, antibacterial and odour resistant.  The fabrics chosen for the covers are in practical but distinctive colours and are created from a mix of cotton and hemp, and stuffed with a finely shredded, recycled polypropylene consisting mainly of bottles and bottle caps.  The covers are easily removed for cleaning.

Bronte Glen Ltd (9-516) is adding a new throw to its range of pet bedding products.  The throw is available in three sizes and is made from a luxury wool blend fleece with a waterproof fabric backing.   Also new at Interzoo is vet bedding in a country plaid design.  Other products on show will be Active non-slip, Traditional and SuperGold vet bedding along with a best selling range of SeniorGold vet bedding and dog beds.  Trojan waterproof beds and an ultra luxury range of Merino wool beds complete the product line-up.

Burgess Pet Care (9-420) will be displaying its various ranges of pet food, including the vet-recommended  Excel brand for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas that has been specially developed for small animals by specialist nutritionists and experts.  Burgess Pet Care also produces Burgess Sensitive, a premium hypoallergenic range for cats and dogs that contain premium functional ingredients.  In addition to these products, the company will be showing a range of great value pet foods under the Supadog, Supacat and Supasmalls brands.

Butch & Bess (9-607) will be showing its naturally made and beautifully scented pet grooming products, including a new SuperGroomer range for professional groomers.  Naturally derived and infused with healthy and healing essential oils, the company’s conditioning shampoos, refresher sprays, pet perfumes and detanglers help to alleviate itchy and dry skin.  They are free from alcohol, parabens, soap, dyes, phosphates, phthalates or other harsh chemicals.   Butch & Bess has also launched a consumer ‘Replicating’ formula.  These shampoos are luxurious yet affordable and are suitable for both dogs and cats of all breeds. The ingredients all work together to nourish the skin, as well as conditioning and softening the coat correctly for fine scissoring.

Cambrian Pet Food Products Ltd (9-410)will be exhibiting its full ranges of dog and cat foods that are produced to exacting BRC standards.  The products include wet foods that are either canned or contained in a plastic tray, and also dry food to which fresh meat can be added.  Both of the company’s manufacturing plants manufacture high quality ‘humanised’ pet food under the Gelert brand name.

The Canny Company Ltd (7-364) will be launching the new Canny Magloc, the quickest and easiest way to connect a lead to a dog.  The design is ideal for people who find it difficult to attach a standard trigger clip, as the Canny Magloc uses magnets to attract the lead to the dog’s collar then a strong locking mechanism made from 30 per cent glass-reinforced nylon secures the two ends in place.  A strong tungsten-steel clip completes the secure connection, meaning the device will withstand up to 65kg of pressure.

The CarPET pet hair remover (9-506) will be showing its pet hair remover that lifts, gathers and removes pet hairs from carpets, soft furnishings, car/motorhome interiors and horse rugs.   It comprises a durable rubber block that has soft, harmless rubber prongs that dig deep to remove all types of embedded pet hairs, which then roll together to be removed in one bundle without harming the surface of the fabric.  The product is ideal for pet owners, groomers, caravan/motor home owners, horse owners and cleaning companies, and for sale through hardware outlets, mail order or the gift market.

Countryside Products Ltd (9-414) specialises in high quality wild bird feeds and small animal feeds.  The company uses only the best raw materials, including grains and seeds that are locally grown and supplied by local farmers.  Countryside Products’ multiple line bagging plant produces single seed or seed and grain mixes, formulated to a standard mix or an individual client’s own specification.  The company also produces seed treats and a variety of filled coconuts, suet cakes and other suet based treats.  Other products include netted and un-netted fat balls in plain flavour packs, variety packs and tubs.

Devoted (9-616) will be showing its new range of 3 x Premium Grain Free complete dog foods made with 60 per cent duck and trout, free run chicken or Scottish salmon together with 40 per cent vegetables, fruits and botanicals.  The UK-made foods also contain prebiotics and joint care supplements.

Dog Rocks Distribution (3A-218a) produces a 100 per cent natural rock product that when placed in a dog’s water bowl will help prevent new urine burn patches appearing on lawns, shrubs and box hedge.  The product does not medicate the dog in any way and does not change the pH balance of dog’s urine.  It is easy to use and safe for all domestic pets and has been proven and endorsed by vets.  Dog Rocks work on absorbing the impurities found in water, removing them, retaining them and then filtering them so that pets have a cleaner source of water, which eliminates the risk of burn patches on lawns.

Doggee (7-364) will be showing its Doggee waste bag dispensers on a keyring.  These include a new range of Mr. Men bag dispensers. This colourful collection is in branded shelf displays and will also be available to display on clip strips and shop hooks.  These handy accessories have their own Mr. Men branded dog bags that are supplied in blister packs of 4-colour matched rolls of 20 bags each and packaged in similar colour schemes to the dispensers.  Designed to function like original Doggee bag dispensers, the bags are stuffed inside and remain there without the need for a lid.  The units have a keychain attachment to clip easily to leads or keys.

Doggy Bag® (9-609) will be showing its Super-absorbent Doggy Bag ® that dries and cleans a dirty dog in seconds.  It absorbs ten times more water than any other towel and literally peels off thick black mud.  The mess is then trapped in the bag so the product is ideal to keep and use in the car and campervan, as well as in the home.  It can also be used after bathing a dog, so reducing grooming time.  Doggy Bag ® dries out quickly, so does not retain any smell therefore does not need frequent washing.

Fold Hill Foods Ltd (7A-305) manufactures complete and complementary pet foods under the brand names of Chewdles and Laughing Dog.  New to the Chewdles range are: Sensitive Chicken Chunks that are small semi-moist treats that are wheat free and available in a 150g pack; Click n Treat, a handy training aid that clicks as it dispenses a treat; and a range of cat products comprising semi-moist snack sticks plus chicken and herb and cheesy treats.  An addition to the Laughing Dog range is ‘Wonderfully Wheat Free Biscuit Meal’, which is a complementary food ideal for feeding with a wet, raw or B.A.R.F diet.

Forthglade (9-619) is one of Europe’s leading natural wet pet food manufacturers that has experienced brand sales increasing 40 per cent over the past year.  A recently launched product is the Natural Lifestage Multicase, featuring three nutritionally balanced product variants, including chicken, duck and lamb.  All three variants contain either brown rice or potato and vegetables, fortified with added vitamins and minerals, including seaweed, glucosamine and chondroitin.  The Multicase is an excellent option for those consumers who like to feed a range of flavours but would prefer to buy this convenience in just one case.

Get Off (9-509) will be exhibiting its Spotless Punch repellent products that are registered in accordance with the EU Biocides Directive 98/8/EU.  The range of Get Off animal repellents offers a highly effective means of deterring even the most persistent cats and dogs.  By releasing a strong odour, Get Off confuses their sense of smell, deterring the animals from fouling and territory marking in specific areas of a garden or home.  The products include; Get Off Scatter Crystals that are a “jelly-like” substance for use on lawns and flowerbeds; Get Off Spray that prevents territorial marking for both indoor and outdoor use; and Wash & Get Off Spray that cleans, neutralises and deters repeat soiling.

Guisapet (9-621) will be showing its creative pet beds that are durable, easy to clean and recyclable.  The range includes medium dog caves for dogs up to 15 kilos in weight.  They are made from polyethylene and available in black, brown or white. There is also a bed for small dogs up to 7 kilos in weight.  These are available in black, blue, pink or white.  A cave for cats up to 8 kilos in weight is in the range, and is available in black, blue, pink or white.  A monster cave is also being shown that is suitable for both cats and dogs.

The Hatchwell Company Limited (9-614) has been producing products for the pet trade for over 80 years.  These include innovative, seasonal and everyday pet treats such as advent calendars, Easter eggs, Christmas puddings and functional health treats.  The company’s toothpaste for pets is now part of its leading Dentifresh dental range. Fourth burglary in a year at pet and garden centre

Argyle Pet and Garden Supplies in Swindon has been targeted by thieves for the fourth time in a year. The store has been the victim of a number of burglaries throughout the year, and despite ensuring nothing of value is ever left in the building, vandals are still breaking in and ransacking the place.

The Argyle Pet and Garden Centre in Swindon has been targeted by thieves for the fourth time in a year.

The store, on Cirencester Way, has been the victim of a number of burglaries throughout the year, and despite ensuring nothing of value is ever left in the building, vandals are still breaking in and ransacking the place.

Owner Mike Arthur said he could not understand why it kept happening at his store.

“This is about the fourth time we have been broken into,” he said. “There is nothing left there for them to steal, so it seems a bit pointless to me. Everything worth taking we have hidden or taken home to keep safe.

“The damage here is not a great monetary value, because it is all garden plants and weed killers. It is just the fact they have broken in that gets me.”

Forty-seven-year-old Mike has taken steps to secure the property every time an incident happens.

“They are obviously looking for something,” he said. “The first time they broke in there was the float for the till that they made off with, which was in a bag in the kitchen. They were probably hoping it was there again, but we wouldn’t be doing that.

“Now they are just smashing windows and coming in to search for anything worth taking. We have screwed all the windows in place already, and the next step will probably be putting bars up. We don’t want to have to resort to that, because we don’t want to make the place look like a prison.”

The break-in was not discovered until the next morning when the store staff turned up for their shifts at 8.50am on Thursday.

“When the staff arrived in the morning they just found all the drawers open and everything scattered about on the floor,” Mike said.

“It probably won’t be for a couple of days until we notice we had something but it is missing now. That’s what usually happens. It is just anything they can sell on really. In the past they have made away with a drill and a toaster. Anything they can make a quick buck on.

“More than anything else it is the inconvenience. We will be putting some more security measures in, but where does it end? Each time we think they won’t bother coming back again. In the end you start to take it personally and think it might be someone you know.”

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: “Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses following a burglary at the Argyle Pet and Garden Centre in Argyle Road.

“The incident took place between 5pm on Wednesday, May 14 and 8.50am on Thursday, May 15.

“Offenders smashed a window and climbed through it before moving some items around.

“A stereo system was stolen.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Almo Nature showcases innovative Green Label products at London show
Almo Nature featured its innovative Green Label Natural Soup for dogs and Green Label Raw Pack for cats at the London Pet Show at Earls Court One London at the weekend...

Almo Nature featured its innovative Green Label Natural Soup for dogs and Green Label Raw Pack for cats at the London Pet Show at Earls Court One London at the weekend.

Green Label Natural Soup for dogs is one of Almo Nature’s most innovative products as it is a rich natural, meaty broth, perfect to be mixed with kibbles. The soup is made using Almo Nature’s unique ‘Raw Pack’ cooking method where all ingredients are packed raw and then cooked directly in the pouch using a high temperature sterilization process.

Green Label Raw Pack for cats is made with 100% pure meat or fish and also requires the ‘Raw Pack’ cooking method. A cat’s sense of smell remains at the heart of this product. As cats eat with their nose, the Raw Pack method enhances the smell of the food, creating a very tasty meal. As cats are not instinctive drinkers and need to supplement their water intake, the natural broth within this product hydrates the cat.

Pier Giovanni Capellino, Almo Nature founder, said, “We were very excited to be promoting our innovative ‘Raw Pack’ products at the London Pet Trade Show. These products offer something different to our pets - a product that is both high in nutrients but also tastes great."

Former veterinary nurse banned from having pets
A former veterinary nurse was this week banned from keeping, owning, transporting and working with any animals for five years, after pleading guilty to one count of failing to ensure her bulldog Martha's needs were met under the Animal Welfare Act 2006...

A former veterinary nurse was this week banned from keeping, owning, transporting and working with any animals for five years, after pleading guilty to one count of failing to ensure the animal’s needs were met, under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Ann Marie Nash, of Chester Road, Erdington – who admitted the charge at an earlier hearing -received 12 weeks’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months, 100 hours’ community service and a 12 month supervision order. She was also ordered to pay £200 court costs and an £80 victim’s surcharge, at Birmingham Crown Court.

Birmingham City Council brought the case after a member of the public found a female British bulldog, called Martha, collapsed in an emaciated state on Chester Road on 10 July 2013.

Martha was immediately examined by a veterinary surgeon who found she had a football-size swelling in her abdomen, thought to be a tumour, and several claws so overgrown they were piercing her paws. Martha was also emaciated – she had a body score of 1.5 out of a possible 5 – and as a result, she was put down on welfare grounds.

As Martha was micro chipped, officers were able to trace her original owner who had given her to a dog rescue charity – BulliesSOS, where Nash acquired her pet, and attested that Martha was in excellent health when she was given to Nash.

When interviewed, Nash maintained she had rehomed the dog through a pets website two weeks before Martha was found by a neighbour, but failed to provide details of the new owner’s name and address.

Jacqui Kennedy, director of regulation and enforcement for Birmingham City Council, said: “This sad case highlights how important it is for people to look after their pets and that they owe them a duty of care.

“While many pet owners love their animals and take good care of them, ensuring they are well fed and maintained, there are some who do not understand their responsibility, and unfortunately our dog wardens are seeing more of these kinds of cases.

“This is why it’s so important to highlight what can happen to the owner, as well as their pet, if they are neglected or disowned, and the judge was very clear that Ms Nash will go to prison if she breaks the terms of her sentence.”

'Death row' animal rescue group closes after founder convicted of neglect
Volunteers have spoken of their devastation at closing an animal rescue group after the group’s founder was convicted of neglecting her pets...

Volunteers have spoken of their devastation at closing an animal rescue group after the group’s founder was convicted of neglecting her pets.

Members of the Emergency Animal Rescue Service (Ears), based at West Tanfield, near Ripon, said the group’s reputation had suffered irreparable damage when Dorothy Harland admitted five counts of animal neglect.

Harrogate magistrates banned her from keeping animals for ten years after hearing the 58-year-old, who devoted her life to saving unwanted dogs from destruction, had allowed her attachment to her four dogs and three cats at her Harrogate home to come before their need to have clean living conditions.

Since being launched in 2011, the Emergency Animal Rescue Service (Ears) had saved 150 dogs and 30 cats from "urgent put-to-sleep situations", after being contacted by vets, owners or sanctuaries.

It placed the unwanted and often elderly animals in foster care, and retrained them, so they could be rehomed, and held regular events in Thirsk and Bedale to raise funds for the group.

Volunteer Julie Hart, of Bedale, said only one member of the group had been aware of allegations before the court case.

Mrs Hart said: “It has been devastating for everybody as the case has tainted Ears. People have been sick and in tears, we were all gobsmacked.

“No other rescue organisation will talk to us, for example the pounds are unlikely ever to give us a dog.”

She said the group had held an emergency meeting in an attempt to relaunch the network of volunteers, but despite receiving overwhelming support from sponsors and supporters it had become clear the group would always be linked to Ms Harland.

Mrs Hart said: “All we ever want to do is help save dogs from death row and send them to a better life.

“We are still in a state of shock at the moment, most of us have been in the rescue world as volunteers for many years, so I am sure people will want to carry on volunteering in some way.

“The area has taken us to its heart and the support we have received recently has been amazing.”

Ms Harland said she believed the group could have continued its work.

She added: “Everything in the court case was nothing to do with the group, but rather my personal life. It’s a very sad day.”

CSJ Charity Retriever Test nets over £1,000 for Pet Blood Bank
Pet Blood Bank was on hand to receive a cheque for £1,075 at the annual CSJ Charity Retriever Test in Fife, where Tom Smith and Cynhinfa Nelson (pictured) won the puppy class

Pet Blood Bank was on hand to receive a cheque for £1,075 at the annual CSJ Charity Retriever Test in Fife.

Having raised £900 last year CSJ and the organisers, led by Alison Sorley (Secretary for the CLA Scotland Gundog Team), were keen to achieve even more and worked hard to ensure its success.

The money was raised in a number of ways including entry fees, an auction and a popular ‘Guess the whisky’ competition – sadly not a tasting competition, but one in which a bottle is wrapped and entrants guess the brand blind.

The annual event attracts top handlers from far afield and this year’s first places went to Tom Smith with Cynhinfa Nelson (puppy); Sandilands with Abergowans Blake (novice); and Dick Sorley with Kenmilquin Durie of Denbank (open).

CSJ thanked everyone concerned and especially Mr Gerard Eadie CBE for hosting the event; Alison Sorley, who works so hard to make it so successful; and this year’s judges Roger Meldrum, Ally Kennedy, Annette Usher and Ann Faulds.

More details and winner photos are at http://csjk9blog.com/
