Betty & Butch has helped to bring some joy and happiness to the area's pet-loving community devasted by the tragic Manchester Dogs' Home fire by being crowned UK Pet Retailer of the Year at the PetQuip Awards.
Still coming to terms with the loss of so many dogs, the people behind this award-winning Manchester business reveal to Pet Trade Xtra why their store has become an integral part of the community. Find out the secrets of their success.
How did Betty and Butch begin?
Betty and Butch began when Paul Fox and Angel Moore were looking for a healthy affordable food for their rescue dog, Duke. They couldn’t find anything on the market that they were happy to feed him, so decided to create their own. They found that the food was so popular that they began to source other natural products and to create their own ranges – and Betty and Butch as we know it was born. Who are your main customers? Including a loyal customer base throughout the North West, we ship as far as New Zealand. Our return customer rate both online and in store is high. We have a broad spectrum of customers from young to aged and a lot of families. Our main compliment is our affinity with their dogs and no matter how boisterous they are in the store, they are always welcome back. How do you keep them loyal to your business? We love to make a fuss of all the dogs that come in, with treats and belly rubs! Aside from that, Angel our General Manager is 100% focused on customer service. Where safe to do so we give advice and we listen to our customers’ needs. If they want us to order a product we don’t stock we will purchase it for them, as long as it meets our ethos. What are the secrets of your success? Along with the cliché of hard work and never giving up, we have stuck to our original business plan and we re-structure it every year. When we started we made a conscious decision to come up with our own products and research our ingredients and rely on professional advice that we were making the right decisions. Every step of the way we have used an intellectual property solicitor to protect our work which has be invaluable in building our brand. What's it like to be crowned UK Pet Retailer of the Year? It’s a fantastic feeling to know that all our efforts over recent years have been noticed. We’ve tried very hard to encourage and educate customers on the benefits of healthy dog products, and this is recognition that the way we do things is what people want to see more of. When looking at the competition we had in our category, it really is a proud moment for the company. Who works in the shop? Angel and Paul, the General Manager and Director, remain the driving force behind the business. Angel is the creative one, constantly coming up with new ideas, while Paul is the practical one, making sure those ideas are possible! Joe Harrison is the Brand Manager and runs the office, and we have Jonathan our Store Manager with our assistant, Rosie, on the shop floor, and Rose our seamstress. What goals do you have? We are currently in the process of franchising the business, and aim to have our first branches out by the end of the year, after which we will continue to strive toward making Betty and Butch a name synonymous with Happy Healthy Dogs. We are also expanding our overseas operations and are in the early stages of speaking to buyers abroad.
How did you respond after the tragic fire at Manchester Dogs' Home?
Paul and Angel’s dog Duke was rescued from Manchester Dog’s Home 10 years ago, so it was heartbreaking to hear the news. Everyone working there is so passionate about animal welfare that we can only imagine what a harrowing experience it must have been. We wanted to help in whatever small way possible, so we set the store as a collection point for donations and gave away some of our own stock. By lunchtime on the first day, we already had a van full of supplies from our customers – it is touching to see how quickly the community responded to the tragedy and we hope to see the charity back on its feet soon.

Rescue dog Duke is the inspiration behind Betty & Butch

Paul Fox, founder and director of Betty and Butch, was struggling to find a high quality food for his rescue dog Duke, when he had a vision to produce his own hypoallergenic food that was affordable yet made with the finest ingredients.
Betty and Butch was born – an ethical dog products brand specialising in natural, responsibly sourced food, treats and accessories, all sold in an environment pleasing to dogs and owners. From its flagship store in South Manchester, the brand has built up a loyal customer base through its friendly staff with an expert knowledge of dog care.
Manchester Dogs' Home, tragically struck by an arson attack, is close to Paul and his partner Angel Moore's hearts because it's where they first met Duke.
Angel had been nagging Paul to death to get a dog, so a trip to the dogs’ home was set for the next day. Paul had stipulated nothing bigger than a Jack Russell but as they walked through the shelter Angel spotted Duke, a Staffordshire Bull cross Doberman lying on the floor of the kennel. He was the only dog not barking and he did not even look up. Angel immediately fell in love with him. Paul made him walk around the kennels again but Angel had his mind made up. The home said he was found stray and eating bits of glass that had food on them so he underwent a stomach operation. They also said he would have had to be put down as he was there so long, and he was suffering from depression.
Duke slept on a comfy bed that night and it took nearly three months for Paul and Angel to get the dog to trust them.
He is 13 now and his life has been transformed. His vet recently aged him at six due to his healthiness which the Paul and Angel say is down to his diet.

Organisers of the PetQuip Awards gave Betty & Butch's Angel Moore and Paul Fox donations of dog toys and food from event sponsors Stax plc, Ernest Charles, Petface, Natures Menu and PATS, to hand over to Manchester Dogs' Home after a fatal fire destroyed the historic building.
Crown Pet Foods team also responded once they had heard about the fire in which 43 dogs died and many more had to be rescued and rehomed.
The day after the fire, a consignment of pet beds, towels, blankets, feeding bowls, toys and large amounts of both Royal Canin and James Wellbeloved foods were delivered to the Cheshire Dogs' Home, where many of the survivors were relocated. Andy Reed, Crown Pet Foods managing director, said: “This was an awful tragedy, and we just wanted to help however we could. The public response from all over the country – and beyond – has been absolutely fantastic, but in the short term getting these dogs fed and comfortable again was our priority.” Meanwhile, temporary kennels are being built at Manchester Dogs’ Home. A website set up to bring together all of the volunteers offering their services to re-build the wreck has listed 3,000 individuals and companies who have already signed up. Among the businesses that have come forward are a ‘massive company offering a completely new re-build’ and a doughnut van offering to sell sugary treats outside the dogs’ home. Another company showing interest in the rebuilding project is the BBC, after an online petition with 12,000 signatures called for popular show DIY SOS to come to the rescue. The makeover programme’s series producer told the Manchester Evening News the show is ‘definitely interested’ in helping out.

She ran it along with her husband, Tony, building it up into the leading and authoritative company on complementary veterinary treatments whose products are available in over 20 countries worldwide.
In recent years their children Joanna and Roly took over the management of the company, taking it forward to the third generation, although Mary is still has responsibilities within the company for quality control and assurance issues involving medicines legislation and regulatory affairs She is a board member of National Office of Animal Health (NOAH), the trade association for the veterinary pharmaceutical industry, and chairs NOAH’s Companion Animal Sub-Committee, an active committee that supports responsible pet ownership by organising National Pet Month each year, the Pet Event held in Parliament every two years and which is also responsible for the independent Pet Health Information website www.pethealthinfo.org.uk and the “I Heart My Pet” campaign. Mary has always had a particular interest in staff training in businesses, and currently sits on the Dorset Employment & Skills Board where she represents the rural business community. She is still an active member of the Federation of Small Businesses in Wessex and somehow manages to fit this all in with work and helping to take care of her four grandchildren when needed. Eighteen petcare companies were honoured on Sunday at the PetQuip Awards party, held at the Majestic Hotel, Harrogate as part of the PATS exhibition programme... In addition to awards in six industry categories, a special Lifetime Achievement Award was introduced into the awards for 2014 by the PetQuip association, and it went to Mary Boughton MBE of Dorwest Herbs, which also won the Supplier of the Year award. A delighted Mary reacted by saying: “We are only a small company so to pick up two awards from such an illustrious international organisation like PetQuip is wonderful. I believe it’s recognition for the connection we have with animals and the passion we show as a team. It’s an honour to receive a lifetime achievement.” Piers Hampson, the marketing director of the Product Innovation of the Year award winner SureFlap, was determined to use the award to further boost his product, saying: “A lot of time and effort goes into producing innovative products like the Dualscan Micro-chip Cat Flap so we’re delighted to be recognised in this way. The product has been well received by consumers and it’s brilliant that it can now boast this accolade.” A poignant reaction came from Angel Moore, general manager of UK Retailer of the Year award winner, Betty and Butch. He said: “I’m dedicating this prestigious award to Manchester and Cheshire Dogs’ Home following the tragedy there. It’s a bitter-sweet moment for us because of what’s happened at the dogs’ home, which is only two miles down the road from our store. But to be recognised in this way is fantastic for us, and gives everyone a boost, especially at this difficult time.” When Stephen Turner, managing director of the Exporter of the Year award, Group 55, entered the pet market five years ago he always believed that export markets would be the key to the company’s success with the Animology brand. “We owe a lot to PetQuip, UKTI and the Chamber of Commerce, and to receive this award means a lot. We now sell in 40 countries, and this award will help us to develop even further. It’s very important for our international patrons to be associated with an award-winning brand.” The award-winning firms for 2014 are: Supplier of the Year Gold – Dorwest Herbs Silver – Natures Menu Highly Commended – Burgess Pet Care Wholesaler of the Year Gold – Pedigree Wholesale Silver – Peregrine Livefoods HC - Collarways Product Innovation of the Year Gold – Sureflap (Dualscan Micro chip Cat flap) Joint Silver – The Canny Co (Mag Lok) and Animology/Group 55 (Clean Sheets) HC – Beaphar (Nature – natural food range) Exporter of the Year Gold – Animology/Group 55 Silver – TastyBone HC – Pet Revolution International Retailer of the Year Gold – Animalis, France Silver – Petco, USA HC – Meiko, Switzerland UK Retailer of the Year Gold – Betty & Butch, Manchester Silver – The Pet Centre (Shirley) Ltd, Solihull HC – Baytree Garden Centre Pets & Aquatics Lifetime Achievement AWARD Mary Boughton MBE. PATS is moving from Harrogate to Telford in 2015

PATS is moving its September show from Harrogate to the Telford International Centre in 2015. The event will take place a fortnight later than this year's show on Sunday, September 27, and Monday, September 28, 2015.
“We’re really excited to reveal our new plans,” said organiser Gordon Thomas, of Impact Exhibitions. “We’ve had six years at Harrogate but Telford International Centre is the ideal venue to enable us to grow further and attract a growing audience and increase international visitor numbers.” The decision to move venues has been made after extensive external research revealed there are a number of issues concerning Harrogate as PATS continues to grow in size and stature. The research highlighted that build-up and breakdown is challenging for exhibitors, with very limited access to the halls. The exhibition halls are no longer suitable and three separate halls, although linked are not ideal for optimum visitor flow. Another concern is that parking for both visitors and exhibitors is expensive and limited. As PATS becomes ever more popular – this weekend’s event has attracted a record number of 170 exhibitors, 44 of which are newcomers – it would have to extend into a fourth linked hall or move to a new venue. PATS believes the move to Telford International Centre is the best and most exciting option for many reasons. The venue is a purpose-built exhibition centre, with a light airy feel, ideally situated on the edge of the town. It has superb exhibitor access for build-up and breakdown and free parking for 1,300 vehicles right by the venue. There is a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets in and around the venue with three hotels on site offering 338 bedrooms. A further 325 bedrooms are available within a five-minute walk and 1,000 just a 15-minute drive away. “We will now be in a purpose-built exhibition hall with great access and parking, easy build up and breakdown, reasonably priced hotels, and no ‘mad’ big venue type pricing, or any ‘hidden’ extras,” added Gordon. Telford itself is ideally located between the UK’s second and third largest cities of Manchester and Birmingham with populations of 2.5 million and 2.4 million respectively, and it has the potential to attract even more home-based and international visitors to the show with easier access by plane, train and car. England’s two largest international airports (outside of London) are also ideally situated for Telford – Birmingham with 110 daily arrivals and Manchester with almost 200. The Shropshire town is also close to Ironbridge Gorge, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and a World Heritage site, making it the perfect location for visitors wishing to combine a spot of sightseeing with the trip to PATS. “This move marks a new era for PATS,” said Gordon. “The UK pet market is the second largest in Europe and we need a venue that reflects the scale of the trade. Telford International Centre fits the bill perfectly.” PATS Sandown will continue and will be held on March 17-18, 2015.

Visitor attendance was slightly down by 3% to 1,917 – compared to 1,969 last year – but it didn’t stop suppliers and retailers from experiencing a highly successful two days of business activity at PATS Harrogate.
News of the event moving to Telford International Centre in 2015 was revealed at Harrogate but the main focus of attention was on the impressive number of new products being launched at the show. A record number of products (270) were entered into the New Product Showcase, and retailers admitted that they were spoiled for choice as they decided on which items to stock in their stores next year. The Nerf Dog stand staged by Hagen created an enormous amount of interest at the show. “PATS has been a great place to get this exciting brand in front of retailers,” said Paul Trott. “We even had one visitor who said he had travelled to the show solely to see the new Nerf range. It has been a great success.” One of the busiest stands at PATS Harrogate was Gor Pets, who were launching lots of new products. “We produced a really glossy catalogue before the show and it helped to attract people to our stand,” said Bill Gor. “PATS allows us to meet our customers face to face, and provides visitors with a great opportunity to touch the products, giving them confidence to place orders in the future.” Pet Munchies was another company launching an exciting new range of products in the form of their Premium Wild Salmon treats. “The reaction has been overwhelming and we’ve had lots of compliments, especially from international buyers,” said Suzanne Rothman. “We love PATS because of the networking opportunities, and we always take on board comments from buyers and distributors.” Hill’s Pet Nutrition were pre-launching their Science Plan Perfect Weight range at the show, and Matthew Timmins said it had created a lot of interest. “The product is targeted at overweight dogs and this is a big issue at the moment. Lot of retailers were eager to find out more about the product and from the reaction we received I think it will be a big seller for us.’ And Charlotte Nash from Precious Pets London said: “In the past PATS has been fantastic for building awareness of the brand and for establishing new business relationships. This show has continued on that theme and interest in our product has been fantastic.” For Armstrong Richardson their show offers worked really well, and Lucy Tait, who handles sales and marketing for the company, said it had received lots of interest in their new Hutton Mill range. Lucy added that the North Yorkshire-based company were looking forward to an even bigger and better show at Telford next year and might even take a stand at Sandown for the first time. Katie Goldsmith, from Collarways, was another exhibitor who was particularly looking forward to next year’s September show after another busy and productive event. “The timing of the Autumn exhibition is perfect for a lot of our products because they sell well during the run up to Christmas.”
Visitors to the show were impressed with the new products showcased during the past two days of Harrogate. Piers Smart from Scampers in Cambridgeshire said: “I only intended to stay for one day but had to come back for the second because of the amount of new things I wanted to see. Another great show for retailers.” And Hannah Edmondson of Trusty Pets, Derby, added: “It has been great seeing all the products being launched – there seems to be more than ever this year.” The Pet Shop at Ripon commented: “We’ve had a great time and there has been loads to see. We could have stayed for a lot longer. And Joan Emerson, from Emersons Pet Centre in the North-East, said: “We love PATS because it’s a chance to meet other people in the trade and also to maximise all the show deals. It’s a bigger show than previous years, we’ve really enjoyed it.” Another visitor retailer attracted by the new products was David Hertwig of Pet Needs & Feeds. “I’m always eager to find out what’s new in the market, and PATS offers that opportunity.” Dates for next year’s PATS PATS Sandown: March 17-18, 2015 PATS Telford: September 27-28, 2015

Scampers Pet Store in Cambridgeshire is highlighting the plight of hedgehogs in the UK with an instore display that encourages customers to take a caring attitude towards them, including using a specialist food from Spike's World.
"Hedgehog numbers are declining at an alarming rate so we wanted to show our customers how they can do their bit in an effort to stop the decline," said Piers Smart. The People's Trust for Endangered Species claims hedgehog numbers have declined by more than a third over the past decade, leaving just one million left in the UK. Habitat loss, poor management of hedgerows and the building of new roads, housing and other developments are to blame. PTES says that hedgehogs are declining in the UK at the same rate as tigers globally. Working with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, PTES is finding out why they are declining. Through their joint campaign, Hedgehog Street, the organisations are creating hedgehog-friendly neighbourhoods, and training managers of public green spaces to be hedgehog-aware. Householders are also being encouraged to make hedgehogs welcome in their gardens but are warning about misconceptions like feeding them with bread and milk. Cow’s milk is very bad for hedgehogs because they can’t digest it – their stomachs don’t contain the right enzymes to process lactose. Bread is no good either as it fills the animal up but does not have much goodness in it. The animal feels as if it has eaten plenty, but lacks the vitamins and minerals that it needs to stay healthy. Add this to being given milk and it doesn’t take long for a hedgehog to become ill. Spike's World produces special food for hedgehogs and Scampers has produced the special display to promote the product alongside caring for hedgehogs. For information about the award-winning Scampers store visit www.scampers.co.uk. More details about Spike's World can be found at www.spikesworld.co.uk

Burgess Pet Care is planning to help retailers unlock the potential of multi-pet households, with a rebrand which sees the full range brought under the ‘Burgess’ banner.
The new brand identity, unveiled at PATS Harrogate, sees all packs move to a common approach, with the Burgess family name playing the lead role across the range. The new packs feature a simplified communication of the products key features and benefits, a bold modern treatment of the Burgess brand, and a large real-life image demonstrating the emotional connection we have with our pets. Burgess are helping retailers take advantage of the increasing opportunity presented by households with more than one pet type. The number of these households is increasing, and the pet trade are uniquely placed to cater for all of their needs. Catering for the Nation’s top 9 favourite family pets means that Burgess are perfectly placed to help retailers take advantage of this trend. The newly designed packaging has been developed in conjunction with consumers and retailers over a period of 12 months, and the business have been extremely careful to avoid consumer confusion during the transition. The Excel and Sensitive brand names have both been maintained on pack, and all bags will be stickered before and after the re-launch to ensure consumers can find their packs. Likewise, all recipes and core range pack weights remain unchanged. The increased emphasis on the Burgess family name also allows the company to emphasise the core aspects of the business; a British family company, its rich food production heritage (over 200 years), and above all its long-standing connection to the pet trade and pets themselves. Justin Heaton, Head of Sales and Marketing at Burgess, said: “There have been tremendous changes in the market over the last 18-24 months and we are always striving to meet those changing demands. “From the research undertaken, the strength of the Burgess brand really shone through. Both customers and consumers really valued our British agricultural heritage, our family values and our passion and expertise in pet care.” Burgess revealed their new-look identity at PATS Harrogate; with a brand new exhibitor stand displaying the new packs, which are scheduled to hit stores from October 2014.
Justin continued: “The feedback so far has been tremendous, and we look forward to working with our customers to deliver long-term growth.” Burgess are urging all retailers to get in touch to learn about how they can take advantage of the multi-pet opportunity, and to discuss the bespoke deals, training and support packs that are available. Contact Burgess on 01780 483311.

Dog owners guilty of not brushing their pets' teeth
Almost a half of dog owners in the UK have never brushed their pet's teeth, according to research carried out by Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of Logic Oral Hygiene Gel and Logic Orozyme Dental Chews...
Recent research carried out by Ceva Animal Health, manufacturer of Logic Oral Hygiene Gel and Logic Orozyme Dental Chews, has revealed that despite over a quarter of dog and cat owners identifying that their pets have bad breath, nearly half of those questioned have never brushed their pet’s teeth.
Like humans, brushing is the best way to care for an animal’s teeth. However the research identified that only 12% of owners brushed their pet’s teeth daily, with 15% brushing every other day, 12% brushing once or twice a month and 15% brushing only when they remember! Moreover, only half of those questioned used dental chews to take care of their pet’s dental health, despite chews being very easy to use with the physical action of chewing helping to remove plaque and increase saliva production. Micky Blackburn, Logic marketing executive at Ceva Animal Health, comments: “Regular dental hygiene is essential to help avoid plaque and tartar build up and prevent tooth decay. Ninety per cent of owners consider their pet’s teeth to be as vulnerable as their own, and are aware of potential health problems associated with dental disease. To minimise these issues they should be encouraged to carry out routine dental hygiene, such as tooth brushing, as regularly as possible.” Logic Oral Hygiene Gel has a multi-enzyme patented system that helps prevent the formation of plaque and fights bad breath. The unique formula contains a surfactant, which helps it bind to a pet’s teeth meaning you can use it with or without brushing. Logic Chews contain a unique multi-enzyme and antibacterial complex. When combined with the chewing action that massages gums and cleans food particles from teeth it results in healthier mouths with fresher breath. The low calorie, long lasting chews are easy and convenient to use and should be used in conjunction with Logic Oral Hygiene Gel. Premium products which have been trusted in vets for over 10 years are now available for retailers to stock. For further information on Logic Oral Hygiene Gel and Logic Orozyme Dental Chews visit www.logicforpets.co.uk or contact your wholesaler.

A Pizza Hut restaurant has sparked fury by offering free animals from a nearby pet shop as part of a bizarre and controversial meal deal promotion.
The fast food restaurant in Melbourne, Australia, erected a large sign, which read: "Buy any 10 large pizzas and get one small animal from Pets Story."
The poster prompted outrage on Twitter and Facebook, where angry animal-lovers were quick to brand the promotion "disgraceful" and "irresponsible".
Eventually, the Mount Waverley eatery scrapped the offer and covered the the sign with white paper after pressure from Oscar's Law, an animal rights organisation.
The fast food chain has since released a statement conceding that the “thoughtless” and “inappropriate” promotion was not condoned by Pizza Hut Australia. It was also quick to highlight that no animals had been given away.

Three new products launched on a busy first Sunday at PATS Harrogate impressed visiting retailers and won prestigious awards in the New Product Showcase. Robbies Grain Free Mixer from Land of Holistic Pets, Mr Johnson’s Natural Forage Food for Rabbits, and Madra Mor Mobility Mud Treatment exhibited by Christies Global were unveiled at the two-day show and achieved instant success. George Burns, owner of Land of Holistic Pets, said he was in “total shock” after his product took honours in the Dog Food and Treats category. “We were really excited about launching it at PATS but never in our wildest dreams did we believe it would win an award.” Marion Stimpson, of Mr Johnson’s, admitted her team was delighted with an award in the Small Animal Product category, and it was satisfying to learn that the panel of retailing judges had identified the qualities of the Natural Forage Food. Beaphar won the prestigious ‘Cat Product’ award at PATS Harrogate for its Beaphar Kidney Support Easy Treats.
Beaphar Kidney Support Easy Treats have been specifically developed for cats prone to kidney disease, many cats of which are on a restrictive diet. The right diet is essential for cats with chronic kidney disease since incorrect nutrition will produce more waste products and will put additional strain on the already weakened kidneys. Beaphar Kidney Support Easy Treats are formulated with a suitable level of high quality protein and a limited level of phosphorus to prevent build up in the blood. Due to excess urination in cats suffering kidney disease, many B vitamins are excreted before they can be utilised by the body. To compensate, Beaphar Kidney Support Easy Treats are also enriched with additional B vitamins to provide cats with the necessary nutrition they need. Amy Hepworth, Marketing Manager at Beaphar UK, said: "Our ‘passion for pets’ results in innovative, genuine products for which there is a real demand and a place on retailer’s shelves. This award is testament to the effort that goes in behind the scenes at Beaphar." For information on the Beaphar product range call 01440 715700 or visit www.beaphar.co.uk

Land of Holistic Pets, the Ayrshire-based company set up by pet nutrition specialist, George Burns, has been awarded Best New Product for its Robbie’s Grain Free Mixer holistic cuisine premium dog food by a panel of prestigious pet retail experts.
The product was selected from more than 270 entries to unanimously be crowned best in show in the Dog Food and Treats category at PATS Harrogate George Burns, founder of Land of Holistic Pets, decided to launch into holistic cuisine for dogs after years of studying the health issues associated with many commercially prepared pet foods. The cuisine is part of a new generation of holistic diets akin to feeding the family. George said: “It is a fantastic honour to be selected as the winner of the Best New Product award at this year’s PATS conference – it’s like winning an Oscar. “We have spent many years studying and transforming pet nutrition, so this recognition is a wonderful way to mark the hard work it has taken to get to where we are today. “Nutrition is the foundation of good health in any pet. By introducing the correct ingredients in the proper proportions along with herbs to a dogs diet, it is possible to correct any imbalance there may be in their body, which in turn enables the immune system to rid the body of toxins which often manifest themselves in conditions, such as itchy skin, eczema, runny eyes, bad breath, waxy ears and loss of energy.” Gordon Thomas of PATS Harrogate 2014 New Product Awards, said: “This was a clear winner and judges were unanimous in classing it Best in Show for innovation. There is nothing else like it on the market. It has quality packaging and customers can clearly see the product they’re buying. It’s adaptable, you can feed it to dogs alongside RAW foods and the price point is spot on.” Robbie’s Grain Free Mixer has been specially developed to be hypo-allergenic, wheat free and gluten free as well as exclusive of additives.

Mr Johnson's Natural Forage for Rabbits is a complimentary food for rabbits packed full of essential fibre.
This succulent high fibre forage should make up 80-90% of a rabbit’s daily diet and is one of the most important dietary requirements for your rabbit’s health and well-being. Natural forage is clean dust free, quality timothy hay with the added benefits of containing Verm X – helping to take care of your rabbit’s intestinal hygiene – a carefully chosen blend of 11 natural herbs, gentle on the gut, aiding digestion and helping with the intestinal challenges of a rabbit. Verm X is a natural blend of herbs recommended by vets.
Rabbits require high levels of fibre in their diet. There are two kinds of fibre -digestible and indigestible. The digestible fibre supplies them with essential nutrients and the indigestible fibre keeps their digestive system moving effectively and is essential for good gut mobility. Mr Johnson’s Natural forage food is a feed that contains both types of essential fibre. Rabbits are natural grazing animals and their unique digestive system is highly specialised and functions well on a diet that is high in fibre. Rabbits in the wild would graze all day & night on grasses and vegetation so their gut is perfectly adapted to this type of feed keeping their digestive system working correctly. If rabbits don’t eat enough forage on a daily basis it can result in digestive blockage, loose stools or other digestive problems. The teeth of rabbits continuously grow, therefore it is essential that rabbits are fed the correct diet in order to help kept their teeth ground down and avoid any health issues associated with overgrown teeth. The side to side chewing action required by rabbits to eat Natural forage is perfect for helping keep their teeth worn down and essential for dental health. Other foods (even the hardest of pellets) do not wear the teeth down like the side-to-side jaw action required and used when eating Natural forage. Rabbit owners that feed Mr Johnson’s Natural forage food along with a portion of one of Mr Johnson’s other delicious rabbit foods, can be confident their rabbit is eating a balanced diet required for good health and well-being.
