Provide a puppy with a strong nutritional foundation that will support him for life
Visit the Eukanuba stand (G60b) at PATS Telford

Eukanuba, with its proven nutritional expertise, understands that puppies have different nutritional needs to adult dogs. That’s why the entire Eukanuba puppy range provides 100% complete and balanced high quality nutrition and contains a tailored blend of ingredients to fuel puppies and support them through the critical first part of their life...

Many factors in a puppy’s life will have an effect on their overall well-being and future, with nutrition being one of the key factors to educate pet owners on. That’s why it’s crucial that you, as retailers, provide puppy owners with the knowledge needed to provide their puppy with a strong nutritional foundation, which will support them for life through optimal development, transforming them into strong, healthy adult dogs.

Eukanuba, with its proven nutritional expertise, understands that puppies have different nutritional needs to adult dogs. That’s why the entire Eukanuba puppy range provides 100% complete and balanced high quality nutrition and contains a tailored blend of ingredients to fuel puppies and support them through the critical first part of their life.

Eukanuba’s Puppy range supports puppies in the following ways:

  • Tailored levels of calcium to support healthy bone growth
  • A natural blend of antioxidants to support natural defenses
  • The omega-3 DHA from fish oil helps aid brain development
  • Natural fibres help ease digestion
  • Omega 3:6 fatty acids help nourish the skin and coat

DHA (found in the fish oil) is clinically proven to promote smart, trainable puppies. Prior to weaning, puppies get DHA from their mother and then through her milk, but once they've graduated to kibbles, they need it as a supplement to aid further cognitive development. Eukanuba’s entire puppy range includes an optimal level of DHA to help promote smart, trainable puppies.

David Morgan BSc MA VetMB CertVR MRCVS from Eukanuba gives his top tips when it comes to choosing the best food for a puppy:

  • Animal protein, like chicken, should be the first ingredient, balanced with healthy wholegrains and fibre in the form of beet pulp. Dogs evolved from carnivores and at
Eukanuba we believe they should be fed as such
  • Make the puppy formula that is matched to the puppy’s breed size.  At Eukanuba, we have tailored each of our puppy diets to include the right balance of protein, energy,
calcium, prebiotics and other important ingredients so that a puppy can be given the nutrition he needs
  • Puppies have very different nutritional needs from adult dogs and should be fed
accordingly. Choosing a high-quality brand like Eukanuba that understands the needs of puppies is crucial. Eukanuba’s puppy formulas were all developed with vets and recommended by top breeders and the brand is dedicated to innovation to ensure that puppies are always given a great start. Eukanuba was also the first to discover that an enhanced level of dietary DHA benefits their neurological development resulting in a smart, trainable puppy.

Eukanuba’s offering includes:

  • Core Nutrition, the only food that is clinically proven to help dog’s live long and healthy lives* when combined with quality veterinary and daily care
  • Daily Care is the right range for unique dogs with unique sensitivities such as skin and joints
  • Breed Specific offers tailored foods for a range of different dogs including golden retriever, German Shepherd, cocker spaniel and boxer
  • Premium Performance is specially made with high-performance dogs in mind. Some dogs love to perform longer and more intensely than others and therefore require the right nutrition to support
  • Veterinary Diets can provide the nutritional support needed for obesity through to kidney disease when used under a vet’s supervision

Feeding high quality nutrition today will help puppies to become the dogs they want to be tomorrow. Extraordinary, adventurous, loyal.  Eukanuba’s range also extends through to adult and senior to help support pets’ nutritional needs no matter what life stage allowing them to perform beyond expectation and live exceptionally long lives.

RRP £5.49.

The founder of Butcher’s Pet Care, Graham Baker, has confirmed the company’s commitment to growth despite Brexit, with a £17 million factory expansion off the back of booming trade.

PATS Telford prepares for its biggest ever show

An impressive number new products – over 260 in total – will be unveiled in the New Product Showcase when the doors to PATS Telford open on Sunday (September 25th) at 9am...

An impressive number new products – over 260 in total – will be unveiled in the New Product Showcase when the doors to PATS Telford open on Sunday (September 25th) at 9am.

The number of entries to the Showcase is a positive sign that PATS exhibitors are really excited about their latest products and can’t wait to show them to visiting retailers and buyers.

All the products entered into the Showcase will be judged by a panel of independent pet retailers on the first day of the show, and the winners of each category will be announced at lunchtime.

“It’s great to see so many exhibitors putting their new products forward,” said organiser Annie Foord. “Speaking to visitors, we know that a lot of them head to the Showcase first. They can see all the latest items in one place, and once they’ve seen what they like, they then head off to the stand of the manufacturer or supplier of that product to discuss it in more detail.”

There are eight categories in the New Product Showcase – cat, dog accessory, dog food or treat, bird, small animal, pet care, grooming and giftware – and past winners admit that winning an award can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade.

Katie Goldsmith, of Collarways, said:“We were bombarded with inquiries after winning a New Product Award for our Zogoflex Toppl toy at Telford last year. The award gave the team a real boost. The first PATS Telford was a brilliant show and we can’t wait until we exhibit again this year.”

Supa Ltd are another company to recognise the prestige of a New Product Award, having won at previous shows. “The awards certainly focused attention on Supa and led to some new listings with current customers and also helped us to open new accounts,” said managing director Chris Goodlad.

The Showcase is designed to help visitors to find easily the latest and most exciting products to hit the pet trade, as they are gathered together in one, extensive display. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor.

With so many new products on show and more than 200 exhibitors attending PATS Telford this year, the exhibition is set to draw an equally impressive amount of visitors.

The organisers have also secured a strong line-up of speakers for two days of seminars designed to give pet retailers ahead-of-the-game ideas on new lines, new approaches and new profit potential.

Visitors will also be able to witness demonstrations from the country’s leading dog groomers.

Other PATS features aimed at making it a great day out include free entry, free catalogue, free tea and coffee, and free parking. Visitors arriving before 10am will also receive a free refreshment voucher, redeemable throughout the day (subject to availability).

Visitors still have time to register online at the PATS website www.patshow.co.uk. A full and up-to-date list of exhibitors is available on the website together with information on how to reach both venues and regularly updated show news.

Opening times
  • Sunday, 25th September, 2016: 9.00am-5.00pm

Beco Pets will be showcasing its new Food for Dogs at PATS Telford in its Beco Eco-Market.

A double display stand is to be unveiled at the event to highlight the natural ingredients contained in the company’s brand new eco-conscious food for dogs.

Stands C20 and D20 will be sectioned off with Beco’s trademark grass and fencing, then ingredients will be displayed in the middle on a large ‘ice table’, a farm-style Victorian bath filled with ice.

“We’ll have our free-range chicken, also some Marine Stewardship Council-certified cod and haddock, and also a leg of wild boar on ice, fresh for everybody to see exactly what fresh ingredients go into our eco conscious dog food,” said Toby Massey, Beco’s co-Founder who designed the display.

“As this is the first time fresh ingredients have ever been displayed at PATS, we hope our market display will give us the opportunity to talk to people about fresh ingredients and how they make dog food taste better. Our 100% fresh meat recipes, that only use fresh meat and never meat meal, are better for your dog.

“And at Beco Pets, we also believe that being eco is hugely important. It’s about using ingredients that damage the environment less. The result: our new food is better for your dog and better for the environment.”

Visitors to the Telford International Centre this Sunday and Monday are invited to visit Beco Pets on stands C20 and D20 and you can also order free samples today on http://bit.ly/1Smvs3s

AmPet Products has reached an agreement with the American suppliers of goDog® toys to distribute the innovative and fun products in the UK.

Retailers will be able to view selected items from the range of tough toys on the AmPet stand (D32) at PATS Telford on September 25-26.

The goDog toys incorporate Chew Guard Technology, a special manufacturing process that adds a super tough and durable lining to soft plush toys and beds.

Worldwise, the American company behind goDog, combine this high-tech lining with reinforced seams to make the toys withstand rough play and tough treatment.

“We are very excited to be distributing goDog toys in the UK,” says Alex Wilson, AmPet’s Sales & Marketing Director.

“We’re exhibiting goDog toys at PATS Telford and I’m certain they will creates created lots of interest.

“As well as being remarkably tough and functional, these toys are also eye-catching as they come in a range of cute animal shapes, including flying pig, elephant, kangaroo, donkey, fat rooster and skinny rooster.”

Lauren Langman, breeder and head dog training instructor at Devon Dogs, has tried the range of toys and given it the thumbs up.

“These are some of the most fun toys I have seen,” says Lauren (pictured above). “As a breeder my dogs know how to play rough and the goDog toys can stand the test of play and training. I would recommend them if you are looking for a tough toy that will last.”

If you’re interested in stocking goDog toys, contact Alex Wilson on 0330 088 1673 or by email alexw@ampet.dog. Visitors to PATS Telford should ensure they visit the AmPet stand (D32) to see the range.

Bucktons and Nature’s Feast get ready for PATS Telford

The Bucktons and Nature’s Feast brands are getting ready for PATS Telford this weekend with an exciting range of new products and merchandising solutions to present to the trade...

The Bucktons and Nature’s Feast brands are getting ready for PATS Telford this weekend with an exciting range of new products and merchandising solutions to present to the trade.

Following extensive research and development, Nature’s Feast has strengthened its offer with the launch of a new small animal food collection. The collection features a range of food, treats and hay for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters, an area which represents a £72m market opportunity year on year.

It has been launched to add value to the category and is based on insight which shows 43% of shoppers perceive nuggets to be boring and processed despite their health credentials. It launched in July this year, alongside care guides, POS and other educational support.

Bucktons will once again be at PATS following a hugely successful year for the brand, which unveiled its new look aviary food range a year ago. Since then, the brand has ruffled feathers and soared from strength to strength with its new ranges, new packaging and new brand positioning. This year will see Bucktons showcase its indoor bird and aviary product range along with their wild bird offering, with focus on the new suet range ready for the forthcoming winter season.

Kirk Rothwell, Brand Manager, said: “PATS Telford is a key date in our calendar and is a must visit event for the pet trade industry. This year is no exception. We’re delighted to be showcasing our new Nature’s Feast small animal collection which has already had some great listings and some really positive reviews.”

Bucktons and Nature’s Feast will be at Stand G8 in Hall 1. For further information, contact Richard Greenwood, Pet Sales Manager on 07976 490341 or email rgreenwood@westlandhorticulture.com
Barking Heads launches £350k TV and radio campaign

A television and radio advertising campaign has been launched this month by premium dog food brand, Barking Heads...

A television and radio advertising campaign has been launched this month by premium dog food brand, Barking Heads.

The £350k campaign is the first time Pet Food UK – Barking Heads' parent company  – has used TV and radio to advertise. The TV commercials will be aired across various Sky channels, whilst the radio campaign will target national stations within big cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and London.

The commercial is designed to promote Barking Heads brand values of natural ingredients, quality recipes and high-meat content to a wider customer base.

Paul Hunter, co-founder of Barking Heads, said: “We know that customers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about the ingredients in pet food, and are demanding better quality diets. We are proud to be at the forefront of pet nutrition and are excited to unveil our first ever TV and radio adverts.

“The campaign is a significant investment for our brand and links in with our wider marketing activity, which is designed to increase customer awareness.”

Filmed in Bedfordshire, the adverts were written and produced by Radioville and Jungle Creative, with the media planning organised by December 19. The campaign consists of three TV commercials and three radio commercials.

Ben Fairman, Managing Director of Radioville, said: “Barking Heads is not your typical pet food, so Radioville and Jungle Creative created a campaign that reflected the vibrant, quirky nature of the brand.  Working with some of the UK’s best puppeteers we brought to life two of the Barking Heads spokes-dogs, Bailey and Gramps. The resulting ads are funny, engaging, memorable and, like Barking Heads, have bags of charisma.”

Media experts December 19 added: “We are extremely excited to see Barking Heads embark on the next stage of the brand’s life. Devising a cost efficient media strategy to set Barking Heads apart and take on the category, as well as make stars of Bailey and Gramps, was paramount when planning this first major advertising campaign…”

Lily’s Kitchen unveils cat range, its biggest launch to date

Lily’s Kitchen is unveiling a brand new identity, new recipes, new flavours, new pack designs and new formats for its entire cat range – which will create excitement and add value to the cat food category...

Lily’s Kitchen is unveiling a brand new identity, new recipes, new flavours, new pack designs and new formats for its entire cat range – which will create excitement and add value to the cat food category.

Consisting of dry, wet, lifestage, organic and treat products to meet the needs of all cat customers, the completely new Lily’s Kitchen cat range - which will replace the existing range in its entirety - is a result of the pioneering company’s dedication to providing proper food for pets.

This resource-intensive project culminates in September with the biggest launch and marketing campaign in the company’s eight-year history. Over the past 18 months, Lily’s Kitchen has undertaken more than 126 hours of ground-breaking research with pet owners, led by a desire to truly understand not just how to reinvigorate the category but how to exceed all expectations of Britain’s 4.5 million cat owning households and their 7.5 million cats, who consume £950 million of cat food each year (Source: PFMA Population data 2016).

The launch comes at a time when cat obesity and associated health issues such as diabetes, heart and kidney disease and arthritis are prevalent amongst the UK cat population, largely driven by the ignorance of their owners about the importance of a healthy balanced diet suitable for cats. According to the PFMA, 77 per cent of vets believe pet obesity is on the rise, with 40 per cent of cats now overweight.

“Our primary concern is for the health and happiness of the UK’s pet population, which has been the backbone of our business since it launched eight years ago,” says Henrietta Morrison, founder and CEO of award-winning Lily’s Kitchen.

“Lily’s Kitchen has led the move towards natural, premium dog food and now we want to replicate this success in cat and be the market leader in natural, premium cat food.  We embrace big challenges and when we recognised that the offerings for cat owners are a far cry from the offerings for dog owners, we had to do something about it. Our fantastic new cat range is evidence of our big aspirations and audacious ideas.

“We have spent a significant amount of time and considerable investment understanding the right product range for consumers, creating a range based on cat preferences and consumer preferences which will add value to our stockists’ stores.

“Lily’s Kitchen offers independent pet shop owners a premium natural brand, which meets the needs of pet owners interested in proper food using high quality ingredients from an ethical and transparent brand. The new range of cat recipes will not only deliver this, but within the extensive new range (moving from 15 to 30 SKUs at launch) pet owners will have the choice of pack formats, sub-ranges and accessible RRPs providing entry point and trial options as well as multipacks and bigger packs demonstrating improved value for money.”

Ground-breaking research

Further evidence of the huge significance of the new cat range comes with the appointment of Lily’s Kitchen’s first ever senior brand marketing manager dedicated to the cat portfolio. Imogen Harper joined the company 12 months ago and has been leading the project, which has included bespoke research to develop a better range for cats and cat owners, as well as helping to create its look and feel – including a new strapline Love at first Bite. Imogen explains:

“Through our research we observed culture, listened to cat owners and really understood the drivers influencing what they are looking for in food for their pets, the top priorities being: a high percentage meat content; natural ingredients; and packaging that is practical and makes you smile every time you see it.

“We always start with what is right for cats, then take into account what is right for the environment and with our new findings we’ve been able to understand how we can help owners make more educated decisions. There is still a lot of education needed about cats being obligate carnivores and thriving on natural high meat diets for example.

“Compared to dog owners, due to the very nature of cats, their owners tend to know less about what cats need and therefore, as a cat food producer, we have a responsibility to highlight essential information to owners making it easy to understand the key benefits. This is also an area where retailers can really add value to their customers by demonstrating their nutrition expertise, which should encourage more cat owners to shop in the independent, premium natural pet trade.

“We will be providing retailers with all the essential tools to highlight the benefits and help their customers choose the best recipes for their cats, including new bespoke POS to drive engagement at the shelf and ongoing support to ensure the changeover is seamless and to ultimately drive incremental sales.”

The new range

Lily’s Kitchen’s new wet, dry, organic and treats range for cats, which comes in the iconic look and feel of Lily’s Kitchen packaging with emotive, premium colour palettes and paper cut illustrations, is born out of Henrietta’s passion for leading positive change in the pet food industry. This all stemmed from the day she decided to take her dog Lily’s health and happiness into her own hands by creating naturally nutritious meals from scratch in her own kitchen. The range primarily aims to ensure that all cats have access to the best, most natural food and owners can truly ‘trust’ they are feeding their pets the right food for long-term happiness and health.

On the larger packs, customers can read about how Henrietta decided to make proper food for cats. They share the true story of Sophie, a pretty tabby belonging to one of Henrietta’s neighbours who was keen to feed her cat a healthier, tasty diet after seeing the success of Lily’s Kitchen’s ‘proper food’ for dogs. Many customers who have cats as well as dogs were also asking Lily’s Kitchen to expand its range, so it was important to get it right for them.

As with all Lily’s Kitchen products, the new cat range is made with a huge amount of care and love combined with extensive expertise from vets and nutritionists. The recipes are packed full of meaty greatness, which refers not only to the quantity of meat used but the high quality that is dictated by the brand’s exacting standards. And all recipes are grain free and made with absolutely no meat meal or fillers, only natural ingredients.

Lily’s Kitchen is also aiming to clear up confusion amongst cat owners about the term ‘complete’ which is often referred to on pet food. Many brands and products that look like main meals are in fact not nutritionally complete as they lack the essential nutrients required to keep cats healthy. On the contrary, all of Lily’s Kitchen’s main meals in the new cat range are nutritionally complete and balanced, including the correct proportion of Taurine as well as other essential nutrients required for optimal heart and eye health.  Lily’s Kitchen has ensured the range clearly sign-posts this for cat owners.

In line with the company’s ethical and sustainable principles, all of the dry food packaging is 100% compostable and includes a feature to make the bags re-sealable to maintain freshness. The wet food is in recyclable aluminium trays rather than in non-recyclable foil pouches, which challenges category norms that single serve meals have to be in packaging that goes straight to landfill.

Benyfit Natural set to showcase Lifestage and Special Diets
Benyfit Natural will be showcasing their Lifestage and Special Diets alongside their complete raw food recipes for adult dogs at PATS Telford. It will be their first time exhibiting at the exhibition...

Benyfit Natural will be showcasing their Lifestage and Special Diets alongside their complete raw food recipes for adult dogs at PATS Telford. It will be their first time exhibiting at the exhibition.

Benyfit Natural has become one of the fastest growing raw food manufacturers to hit the market in the last 12 months. They are rapidly increasing their number of retailers across the UK and their freezer deals are proving to be very popular. Their stockists tell them that they simply cannot keep up with the demand for their delicious recipes.

They have entered their raw food recipes in to four separate entries in the New Products Awards at PATS and visitors will also have the opportunity win one of their small freezers in a free prize draw on their stand or to get £100 of extra stock when they order a 5ft freezer at the show.

At Benyfit Natural they believe in the old adage that you only get out what you put in and that this certainly applies when it comes to  dog nutrition which is why they and their team have developed a range of recipes that combine the right balance of quality raw ingredients, vitamins and minerals to maintain the health, vitality and bounce of any dog.

Their company’s founder, Ben Van Praagh, is himself a leading gundog trainer who has competed across the UK with his dogs in gundog trials but he is also a qualified chef, having trained at Crawley College. With his belief that a balanced diet leads to balanced behaviour, he has been able to combine his understanding of training dogs with his nutritional background in order to produce a range of foods that are not only natural but are also nutritionally balanced and biologically appropriate.

The feeding of a raw bone and raw meat diet is thought to have many health benefits including helping to prevent ear and gland infections, skin allergies, diabetes, heart and joint problems. The feeding of raw bones is also good for the health of a dog’s teeth and gums.

The Benyfit Natural complete raw food recipes use a variety of ethically sourced and Defra approved British human grade meats such as chicken, turkey and beef as well as tripe. They also contain ground bones, carrot, broccoli, swede, offal, flaxseed oil, kelp and herbs as well as raw eggs all of which offer a natural combination of vitamins, minerals, omega oils and amino acids to produce a healthy skin, coat, joints, thyroid and cell production as well as helping to support the immune system. The adult food is coarsely minced to provide the texture that dogs like. All varieties are designed to help maintain a healthy weight for an adult dog and are veterinary approved and were developed by Ben with the help of their team of advises who include veterinary surgeons, animal nutritionists and behaviourists.

The Benyfit Puppy Food is finely minced for small mouths and also contains Verm-X for healthy intestinal hygiene. The Benyfit Senior food helps to maintain the correct weight of older or less active dogs and also contains added Glucosamine, MSM and Chondroitin for healthy joints and cartilages enabling easier movement.

The Premium Blend combines a range of novel proteins which are not only low in fat but are also kind to the digestive system whilst at the same time giving a dog all the vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.

The Premium Blend product is made using raw British venison flank with the bone in, whole rabbit (skinned) and turkey carcass, heart, liver, carrots, broccoli, swede, whole eggs, kelp, herbs and flaxseed oil. These ingredients are carefully combined to provide any working dog with the nutritionally balanced and complete diet they deserve. Rabbit contains vitamins B1, B3 and B5 as well as Copper and Magnesium. Venison is low in fat and is full of vitamins and Iron and is also high in Protein. Turkey is ideal for dogs that develop allergies to other poultry such as chicken and the bones contain Calcium and Phosphorus which are needed for healthy teeth and bones.

As with all Natural Benyfit’s recipes, Premium Blend contains NO animal derivatives, NO grains and NO carbs just wholesome raw food.

The latest editions to the range are Meat Feast and Sensitive. Meat Feast is vegetable free and has been created primarily to tackle the problem of itchy skin, one of the major symptoms of a yeast intolerance. Often grain and gluten can cause these types of problems but if these have been eliminated from the diet and the itching persists, it is more likely to be caused by the sugars in vegetables. Swapping to a vegetable free diet will stop the excessive itching and scratching in dogs prone to this intolerance. This product is also fantastic however for people wishing to feed a nutritionally balanced diet free of vegetables for any other reason.

A recent convert to Benyfit Natural, Sara Mason whose dog Harry suffered from yeast intolerance and was cured completely by switching to the Meat Feast recipe said, “I was beside myself with worry to see Harry with such sore skin from excessive scratching. Nothing I tried seemed to cure the problem until I found out about Benyfit Natural’s Meat Feast. I am very happy with the food Harry is

The Sensitive diet as the name suggest is a satisfying and healthy meal to assist sensitive stomachs, those with pancreatitis or prone to forming bladder stones as it contains no offal, is low in purine and low fat (so also great for overweight working dogs).

The recipe contains human grade Turkey with bone, Green Lambs Tripe, Broccoli, Carrot, Swede, Flaxseed Oil, Egg, Kelp, Celery Seeds, Alfalfa, Nettles, Rosemary, Psyllium Husks, Clivers and Wild Yam.

Benyfit Natural has recently brought out new packaging. Their new tubs which are BPA free to avoid leakage of any nasty toxins are made from recycled materials and are recyclable. Available in 500g and 1kg sizes, they can be conveniently stored in the freezer with the meat contents easy to portion out. They have also made sure that there is no soggy food of icy film on the top by blast-freezing the contents so that the texture and taste remains - a major selling point of the range.

Eligible British firms will have the opportunity to receive cash grants to help them exhibit at Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida (22 to 24 March 2017) as a result of PetQuip securing British government funding for eligible exhibitors.

Exhibiting companies can benefit from attractive  grants, subject to the terms and conditions of the Department for International Trade (DIT) Tradeshow Access Programme (formerly UKTI TAP programme).  Details of the grants and other information on the association’s support package are available from PetQuip.

Following the success of the PetQuip-organised British group at the last six editions of Global Pet Expo, the association is expecting considerable demand for stand space and as this is limited interested companies are urged to apply early.

The director general of PetQuip, Amanda Sizer Barrett highlighting the importance of the show, said: “Global Pet Expo offers significant opportunities for British suppliers to expand their businesses across the massive US pet care market and to many other overseas territories. In fact, the last edition of the show attracted key buyers from 76 countries.

"The US market for pet products is worth over $60 billion, and the fact that the show attracts all of the leading US and Canadian retailers such as Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supermarket, Pet Valu and other retailers such as Ahold, Amazon, TJX Company, Target, Tractor Supply Company and Costco speaks for itself.

"UK firms exhibiting in previous British groups at Global Pet Expo are now benefitting from repeat business from this important market.

"The 2017 edition of the show offers similar opportunities for British exporters across all sectors of the industry, including items for cats and dogs, small mammals, birds, plus products for the aquatics, reptile and equine sectors."

PetQuip’s comprehensive support package for the British exhibiting companies will include: advice and information about how to prepare for and how to maximise a company’s presence at the show; support from an industry information stand organised and manned by the experienced PetQuip team; press editorial and promotion on exhibitor’s products prior to, during and after the show; preview marketing material distributed to named buyers in advance of the show; and help with freight, travel, accommodation and other logistics.

Interested companies should contact PetQuip to receive further information and costs and to book a stand. Call Theresa Swann or Emma Lewis on +44 (0) 1959 565 995, or email theresa@petquip.com  emma@petquip.com

Pets Corner announced as finalist in two categories of National Business Awards
Pets Corner has been shortlisted in two categories of the 2016 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards...

Pets Corner has been shortlisted in two categories of the 2016 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards.  The family owned, ethical pet retailer, which has over 160 stores across the UK, has been chosen as a finalist for The Customer Focus Award and the Lloyds Bank Positive Social Impact Award.

Dean Richmond, Managing Director at Pets Corner, said: “Improving animal welfare and showing that businesses can and should make a positive impact to help the local community and our country have always been our top priorities at Pets Corner.

"I am so proud of our teams and the continuous commitment and dedication they show to our customers.  I am delighted that their achievements are being recognised and that Pets Corner has been shortlisted for both The Customer Focus Award and The Lloyds Bank Positive Social Impact Award.”

The finalists were chosen from the hundreds of businesses that entered or were nominated across 18 award categories. They will now prepare for live presentations to an expert judging panel who will decide the overall winners.

Described as “the Oscars of great British business” by David Cameron, former Prime Minister, this year’s prestigious award ceremony will take place on Tuesday 15th November, at the Grosvenor House, Park Lane, where the winners will be revealed.

For the first time, RT Hon Conor McGinn MP recently hosted a reception for the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards at the House of Commons.  This enabled finalists to meet fellow entrants, the National Business Awards Advisory Board members, judges (who they will present to in September) and sponsors of each category.

Tom Broughton, Group Brand Director of the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards said: “Due to the high number of entries for this years’ awards, narrowing the entries down to 140 finalists was a difficult task. But through a thorough and comprehensive judging process, the selected finalists demonstrate exceptional quality and diversity across a range of business sectors within the UK. We are now looking forward to the next step of the process and meeting some of the finalists face-to-face.”

Visit www.nationalbusinessawards.co.uk for a full list of all finalists or for details on how to attend the event.

Survey reveals growth in licensed pet boarding sector
The pet boarding industry is growing steadily with the number of licences issued by local authorities increasing year on year, according to initial findings revealed by the Pet Industry Federation...
The pet boarding industry is growing steadily with the number of licences issued by local authorities increasing year on year, according to initial findings revealed by the Pet Industry Federation.

PIF’s recent Freedom of Information request in June to nearly 400 councils, found that the average number of licensed kennels and catteries has grown by 25%; and the average number of licensed home boarders has doubled in the same period.

In addition, PIF’s findings show that very few councils license dog daycare/crèche activities, despite it being a form of boarding, with the potential for animal welfare problems to arise if standards were not maintained.

“Whilst these findings reveal a buoyant situation among licensed boarding establishments, the figures need to be carefully read. Although the number of licensed home boarders has doubled, the vast majority of dogs are still boarded in kennels rather than with home boarders”, explained Chief Executive, Nigel Baker.

“In addition we’ve noticed huge diversity in the type of person who carries out a licence inspection, which will lead to inconsistency in licence fees and levels of training among inspectors. Whilst 35% use an environmental health officer and 28% employ the services of a veterinary surgeon, 14% of councils use a dog warden for their licence inspections and 36% use an ‘other’ type of individual.

“We also see a wide range of guidelines being used by councils across the UK when carrying out inspections. 46% use their own model licence conditions and 36% use kennel conditions dating back to 1995, which is very worrying when you consider how much has changed within the boarding environment in the last 20 years. The average licence price was revealed to be £207, with fees varying between £35 and £725.”

The FOI request was sent to 390 councils and 72% replied. It comes as new model licence conditions for boarding kennels have just been published by the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CIEH) and a working party, which PIF sits on, is close to finalising revised model home boarding conditions for publication by CIEH later in the year.

Lord Lieutenant visits Lintbells' offices in Herts
Lintbells has been presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category by HM Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, The Countess of Verulam.

Lintbells, maker of high quality natural pet supplements, was presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category by HM Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, The Countess of Verulam.

The Countess presented the award in the form of an engraved lead crystal bowl and a scroll. She congratulated the company on its achievement, remarking that there are many applications for Queens Awards and very, very few are granted.

It was a proud day for company co-founders John Davies and John Howie. Their description of their journey showed just how much hard work and difficult decision making has gone into reaching this point, including some early major investments in funding veterinary trials at the Royal Veterinary College to provide proof of the effects of Lintbells products.

Receiving an award for innovation was particularly special for the company as it is an area of core focus – Lintbells products have to show demonstrable effects in order for the company to release them to market

John Howie paid tribute to the early customers who tried the products then became advocates, telling other pet owners about their experiences, “We never forget what we owe those customers and future ones too and it’s what drives us continually to get better.”

John Davies echoed those views paying tribute to the many long standing relationships the company has fostered with suppliers and customers over the years, “I can promise that if you’ve been impressed by what you’ve seen from Lintbells so far you’ve only experienced the hors d’oeuvres - the main meal is coming right up!”

It is ten years to the month since the company was first incorporated, making the day a very special celebration. The Lintbells team were clearly delighted by their success and celebrated with a cream tea served in a marquee on the farm where the offices are situated.

They were joined by suppliers and customers including the amazing Knebworth Twisters Flyball Team who are sponsored by Lintbells and gave a brilliant, fast-paced demonstration. Luna Animal Rescue, who Lintbells also sponsor, attended with a few furry friends.

A tasty antidote to over-priced pet snacks
The Dog Treat Company (DTC) returns to PATS (E63) at the end of an especially successful year...

The Dog Treat Company (DTC) returns to PATS (E63) at the end of an especially successful year that has seen this Devon-based business’s unrivalled reputation for superior dog snacking spread far beyond our shores to global markets as diverse as South Korea, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the United States.

In these more health-conscious times, when ‘hot’ topics like rising human obesity, ingredient integrity, food label literacy, GMOs and ‘free-from’ are increasingly being discussed and debated, it makes complete sense that our four legged-friends’ dietary requirements are also starting to be scrutinized like never before.

With dog obesity in the ascendancy and too many mass market dogs treats still consisting of over-processed, inferior-grade meats, synthetic scents, lurid artificial colours, inappropriate grains, and masking salts/sugars, it’s not surprising to learn that an all-natural, sustainably-sourced operation like The Dog Treat Company (DTC) is quickly securing a significant loyalist following.

This is one DEFRA-approved operation that sources all its core ingredients from the UK.  Its eggs and chicken liver are free-range and locally-sourced whilst the beneficial herbs, (central to each recipe’s distinct tastes and associated health benefits) are GMO-free and non-irradiated.

Having first made its name in highly desirable graze-style, home delivery snack boxes for the well-heeled pooch, this family-owned operation has quickly extended its operation by taking its quirky sense of humour and art deco pack designs into a series of highly collectible ‘treat tins’ covering every conceivable pet priority: Take My Breath Away, Run Free & Fabulous Fur to more specific human special occasions: God Save The Corgi (Queen’s 90th) and Woofarendum (Brexit vote).

Throw in the fact that DTC has recently been shortlisted for a Pet Quip award, aligned themselves with pet horoscope heavyweight Russell Grant and begun forging friendships with a number of    like-minded style brands (e.g. Pet’s Corner, Orvis stores) and you start to appreciate how this brand’s appeal is gaining momentum in every imaginable pet-friendly environment from pet-friendly pubs, garden centres and boutique hotels to holidays escapes and independent pet food chains.

More and more dog owners are deciding that their pet’s taste buds should no longer be taken for granted.

Edgard & Cooper announces UK launch
Belgium company Edgard & Cooper is bringing its delicious recipes for dogs, that contain only 100% fresh meat and 100% natural ingredients, to the UK! The company has recently set up its UK headquarters in London...

Belgium company Edgard & Cooper is bringing its delicious recipes for dogs, that contain only 100% fresh meat and 100% natural ingredients, to the UK! The company has recently set up its UK headquarters in London.

After Edgard and Cooper both struggled to digest other dog food products, which also made Edgard sick, their owners decided that every pet deserves to eat fresh. And so they developed the world’s first fresh meat kibble. The market is dominated by dog food that contains meat meal, which is low in digestibility and biological value compared to fresh meat.

Jurgen Degrande, Manager at Edgard & Cooper explains: "Meat meal is actually offal being worked intensively to a powder. And yet it is often presented as ‘real meat’. At Edgard & Cooper, we believe dog food must be made from fresh cuts of meat and recognizable natural ingredients, such as herbs, fruits and vegetables.”

Soon to be available in the UK are a range of grain-free, gluten-free and even organic kibbles, tins and cups. Every bowl bursts with tasty veggies, berries and herbs, giving your dog all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants they need to keep them healthy from nose to tail.

Edgard & Cooper was founded in Belgium by three enthusiastic entrepreneurs: Koen Bostoen, Louis Chalabi, and Jurgen Degrande. Their inspiration to create 100% fresh products came from their own dogs, Edgard and Cooper, who struggled to digest other dog food products on the market.

Edgard & Cooper have a range of delicious meat meal free kibbles, tins, and cups, and have grain-free, gluten-free and organic recipes. They set up their UK headquarters September 2016 to further their mission to help all dogs enjoy tasty and healthy food.

They donate 10% of all profits to dog charities around the world, and their packaging is made of 100% biodegradable materials, printed with 100% water-based inks without chemicals, making them fully compostable.

Rising star Cotswold RAW makes PATS debut

Sometimes the moment just seems right which is why we decided that 2016 was the perfect moment to attend our first PATS show (stand A2) , joining a number of the new generation of superior, nutritionally-dense pet foods that are in tune with the thinking of increasingly health-conscious pet owners.

Cotswold RAW is proud of its role as an ambassador for countryside common sense acting as a passionate rural voice (local sourcing & traceability) in a blossoming product sector historically dominated by large corporates and a Home Counties dominated pet scene.

Recently shortlisted for ‘Prestigious Rural Business and Pet Quip awards, Cotswold RAW is a small dynamic team with a strong track record in innovation which in 2016 includes, snappy transparent packaging (in stark contrast to traditional ‘no peeking’ ice cream tubs that dominate the ‘raw scene, their first of many puppy propositions and an extended portfolio of alternative protein pet foods (e.g. turkey & tripe) because chicken isn’t for everyone and even chicken lovers like a little variety from time to time.

At the very pinnacle of Cotswold RAW successes in 2016 has been their recently completed series of inspiring county shows (June-September) which enabled the Cotswold RAW squad to discuss and debate premium tier pet food with the same animal-loving community who helped shape the whole Cotswold RAW offer 18 mths earlier.

At the heart of Cotswold’s success has been their ground-breaking sausage sub-range which marries nutritional integrity with convenience, foodiness and portion control, the perfect stepping stone from bland, nutritionally vacant kibble to more mainstream raw minces.

Breed-specific dog shampoo set to be launched at PATS

A breed-specific range of dog shampoo, covering six breeds, will be unveiled by Leicester-based Woodside AC Trading Ltd at PATS Telford on September 25-26.

The range called Pooch is claimed to be the first dog breed specific shampoo to hit the UK

The products will cover six breeds that often suffer from skin complaints and allergic reactions to many generic products - Yorkie, Maltese, German Shepherd, Westie, Labrador and Shih-Tzu. With a balanced PH matching the breed of dog, Pooch will help prevent such problems arising.

Another product that will be showcased by the company at PATS is Aniderm, a range consisting of dry and wet shampoos for dogs and cats. Used as standalone products or a three-stage system, these help treat dry, irritable and sore skin complaints by targeting various coat types.

Visitors to the Woodside AC Trading Ltd stand will also be able to view Kernel Kat, an eco-friendly and flushable cat litter that was developed by animal care experts. In the future, the Natural range will be joined by two new fragrances.

Radical new tortoise home to be showcased at PATS

An East Yorkshire-based pet product company are hoping traditional methods of keeping young tortoises indoors within wooden or glass vivariums will soon be a thing of the past, when they unveil a completely innovative and radical approach in new tortoise housing at PATS Telford.

As one would expect the new tortoise enclosure encompasses many practical and essential features to ensure the wellbeing of its inhabitants, but it’s the incredible aesthetics which really puts this new housing into a league of its own, for it has been ingeniously designed and manufactured to resemble a large mother-tortoise.

Vividarium, the company responsible for its creation, believe the lifelike polyresin animal is sure to be a real crowd pleaser when it’s showcased to thousands of potential customers at the PATS Telford in September.

And it would appear that the reptile industry seem to agree, with the editor of the Practical Reptile Keeping Magazine recently waxing lyrical of its unique features, benefits and exquisite fine details, in a two page review of the product.

The clever and innovative thinking, which the Practical Reptile Magazine review eloquently portrayed, has obviously been at the forefront of the product’s design at every stage, and has enabled the housing to boast several unique features, benefitting both the hobbyist and the inhabitants alike.

  • Features include an in-built hide, formed out of the inside of the head of the enclosure, so baby tortoises can retreat and hide out, reducing stress levels.
  • Internal oval shape, reducing the risk of young tortoises toppling over on to their backs, which they often do when trying to shimmy up right-angled perimeter walls in more traditional rectangular vivariums.
  • Inbuilt cable tidy makes a neat and tidy job of the lighting.
  • Made from lightweight resin which means its waterproof, it won’t rot, it’s easy to manoeuvre and easy to clean and disinfect.

The Vividarium Tortoise Home is the very first product to come off the production line for the fledgling company, but they already have plans in place to introduce a further six similarly striking designs to their portfolio next year. These will include snakes, lizards and amphibians.

With design patents already fully granted in 28 countries worldwide and a 160,000 square foot factory able to handle any amount of orders, Vividarium may start to see the biggest shake-up in the reptile housing industry within the last four decades.

Charles Owen & Co. (Bow) Ltd is to sponsor The Hub at BETA International 2017. This vibrant new feature is set to become a real hive of activity, with product displays, celebrity interviews, retailer seminars and Talking Business, the trade fair's popular industry discussion hosted by Alastair Stewart.

The Charles Owen Hub, with its bright, contemporary staging and large overhead screens, will replace the show's Horse Demonstration & Seminar Arena – sponsored by the riding hat manufacturer for the past four years – as part of a move to develop and enhance the trade fair's modern B2B environment.

“Supporting BETA International's building of this strong educational centre has been important to us from the very beginning,” said Charles Owen managing director Roy Burek.

“Education and shared innovation is key to our design and production process. We are thrilled to bring that focus to the forefront and this fantastic new feature is the perfect setting for us to engage with our retailers on an entirely new level. We are looking forward to sharing in the illuminating experiences that they will enjoy this year at The Charles Owen Hub.”

BETA International organiser Claire Thomas added: “We are thrilled that Charles Owen has decided to continue its sponsorship.

"The Hub's clean, simple lines are great on the eye and its significant digital capability can only enhance the visitor experience. The Horse Demonstration & Seminar Arena has been a popular feature of the show for many years and we are confident that The Hub will build upon its success.”

Charles Owen joins fellow BETA International supporters Battles, Ekkia, Equestrian Trade News, Henson Franklyn, Hy, NAF, Shires Equestrian, Schockemöhle Sports, Toggi and main sponsor Neue Schule.

BETA International is the leading trade exhibition for equestrian, country clothing, outdoor and pet products.

Next year’s show takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 22 to 24 January. For further information about exhibiting, contact James Palmer, telephone +44 (0)1937 582111, email jamesp@beta-int.com or visit www.beta-int.com.
