The winners of the PATS Sandown 2016 New Product Awards were chosen by a team of expert pet retail judges, who arrived at the show before 9am on Tuesday, March 22, in order to make their choices from an impressive number of new products entered.

Their decisions took into account a number of guideline criteria such as product innovation, design, quality, packaging and value for money.

The judges agreed that the New Product Showcase had produced a high calibre of entries with a tremendous amount of innovation. They were pleased to see such a wide range of products, and felt the majority of items on display showed some great innovation. They were also impressed with the level of technology-linked products on display.

Britain's 'most eco-conscious dog food' launched at PATS Sandown by Beco Pets

Beco Pets has launched its biggest new range yet – ‘Britain's most eco-conscious dog food’.

After two years of secret research and development, the award-winning company unveiled its new food at PATS Sandown.

The ground-breaking new range uses only ethically and locally sourced ingredients with food provenance listed at the top of Beco’s production priorities.

Notably, Beco Pets’ Food for Dogs is THE FIRST British brand on the market to use sustainably caught fish, carrying the respected blue MSC mark, the official certification of sustainable seafood from The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) which sets standards for sustainable fishing.

Beco Food for Dogs, which is gluten free, hypoallergenic, and a completely natural food, comes in three new flavours – MSC cod and haddock, free-range Norfolk chicken and free-roaming wild boar.

FISH: Beco’s North Atlantic fish recipe is crammed with natural prebiotics and superfoods like kale and chickpeas, helping dogs’ digestion and immune system. One of the world’s most nutrient-dense foods, kale is a fantastic anti-oxidant and is packed with Vitamin A, helping dogs’ urinary health. Overfishing and the global depletion of fish stocks have become a huge problem for our oceans. By using MSC-certified fish, Beco is reassuring customers that its dog food only contains sustainably caught fish, helping to preserve our oceans for generations to come.

CHICKEN: Beco is THE FIRST dry dog food to use free-range chicken. The free-range hens are happier than battery hens, are reared in an ethical environment and are given the freedom to roam outdoors as Nature intended. They have access to grubs, wild flowers, green pastures and sunlight, all natural sources of Vitamins A & D. Beco chickens live happier lives, and your dog enjoys tastier food.

BOAR: Beco’s wild boar recipe is also packed with natural prebiotics and superfoods like broccoli and pumpkin, so Beco Food for Dogs helps dogs’ digestions and immune system. Pumpkin is super-nutritious for dogs. It's a rich source of fibre and is loaded with lots of disease-fighting nutrients, including potassium, magnesium and Vitamins C & E. It's a true superfood!

Beco Pets Food for Dogs is grain-free and, unlike many other products, is also meat-meal free. Its fresh meat content and other low-carbon type materials are ethically farmed and locally sourced. Beco decided to use high-quality fresh meat over meat meal, as they felt dogs deserve the best. Fresh meat tastes better and, most importantly, is more digestible.

Beco dog food’s other ingredients include bilberries (that are great for dogs’ eye health), Marigold flowers (that are a natural antiseptic and are great for shiny coats), milk thistle (that is full of antioxidants), nettles (that are full of vitamins that help dogs’ joints), cleavers (a rich source of vitamin C), chamomile (which has calming properties), fennel (which aids digestion) and Burdock root (which is anti-bacterial and supports a dog’s liver and kidneys).

Beco Pets, founded in 2009 by the leading pet trade duo George Bramble (above right) and Toby Massey (above left) took conscious decisions when sourcing their ingredients which they say are more eco-friendly and ethical than traditional foods.

George Bramble said: “There are other grain-free foods with high meat content on the market. But we couldn’t find any foods that really focused on where the ingredients came from and how much of an environmental impact the production process would have.

"I’m a keen fisherman myself, and the idea that there may be no wild fish left in our oceans in 40 years’ time really scares me. So whether I’m buying dog food or fish for my own consumption, I want to know that it’s high-quality, fresh fish, and also that it’s been sustainably caught. That’s why we came up with Beco Food for Dogs.

"Today we can offer Britain’s nine million dogs a balanced diet that is both delicious and nutritious. To their owners, our message is simply that Beco Pets dog food is better for your pet, and better for the environment.”

Toby Massey added: "There are so many products on the market all competing to tell you that their product is better dogs. But we knew the truth: that choosing premium ingredients is what makes a product better for your dog. Fresh meat is far more palatable than disgusting powdered meat meal. Our meat is more nutritious, healthier and tastier. As a dog owner myself, why would I want to feed my dog anything else?"

The number of overweight and obese dogs in Britain is booming, with 3 million UK dogs judged too fat. Research by the UK’s leading veterinary charity, the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), say owners admit to indulging their pets, giving them cake, biscuits, crisps, chips, takeaway and even alcohol. 2.6 million dogs are fed table scraps or leftovers as their main meals.

The animals used in the preparation of Beco Pets dog food are bred in humane ways; Beco chose ingredients that are as locally sourced as possible in order to minimise their carbon footprint. They also use white potato, not sweet potato, plus a host of other ingredients that help improve and maintain dogs’ general health.

At PATS Sandown, a special promotional offer will be launched for retailers, offering any retailer who signs up for Beco dog food a gift of one month’s worth of free stock.

Retailers who order dog food at the show will be given POS, and free sample packs to give to their customers. They will even be offered free packed lunches for their own consumption. This follows in the wake of Beco’s hugely successful Beco Poop Bag campaign, which was aimed at promoting responsible dog ownership. Beco gave away free nearly two million poop bags to 750 retailers across the UK.

The Beco Buyers' Lounge (M1) at PATS Sandown can be found in the Surrey Hall.

Alfie and Molly’s Dog Bakery has launched a new air dried range of treats at PATS Sandown, and has also offered 10% off all orders for new customers placed at the show...

Alfie & Molly’s is a family-run business founded in Bristol in 2013, and products were inspired by Maria Szabo’s two springer border collies who loved their treats.

After trying different branded treats full of additives and preservatives, it became apparent they were affecting Molly – not so much Alfie – in her temperament, general well-being and energy.

Maria decided to start baking her own treats and the change in Molly was almost instant.

The treats are home-baked and made from 100% human grade ingredient, and organic as far as possible.

The company doesn’t use anything artificial, and there are no additives, preservatives, artificial colours or flavourings – everything is 100% natural.

To see Alfie & Molly’s new range of air dried treats and take advantage of the 10% discount offer for new customers visit stand F7 at PATS Sandown.

For more information about the company visit www.alfieandmolly.co.uk or call 01454 855767.

TORUS extend their product line and release 1 litre bowl

Following the success of the 2 litre pet watering system, Torus have extended their product line and released a 1 litre bowl to specifically cater for smaller dogs and cats.

The water bowl, which was officially launched to the trade at PATs Telford in 2015, provides fresh, filtered and cool water whenever the pet requires. Recent success, including winning ‘Product Innovation of the Year 2016’ and presenting this pet drinking innovation at Crufts, has created considerable awareness and demand for a smaller 1 litre bowl.

The 1 litre water bowl works in an identical way; auto-replenishing as the pet drinks and allowing the water to be stored away for travel, but is presented in a distinct oval shape – allowing cats to drink from the bowl without their whiskers touching the sides.

Benefits of the bowl include:

  • Carbon-filtered water
  • Auto-replenishes
  • No batteries or power needed
  • 1 litre storage capacity
  • Travel friendly
  • No mess, no spills
  • Four cool colours available

Carina Evans, CEO of Dock Rocks Distribution Ltd, says: “We are very pleased to be back at PATs just 6 months later with an extension to our product line. The 1 litre bowl has already been well received by the consumer, especially amongst the cat market. We have also listened to our customer and released an additional pink bowl in the 1 litre range which is proving popular.”

Both the large and small Torus bowls can be seen on stand H6 at PATs Sandown. The bowls will be at a special 10% discount for all new orders to retailers, along with free shipping for any retailers or wholesalers wishing to order at the show.

Lily’s Kitchen is relaunching its popular dry dog food range with re-designed packaging and new recipes with a host of extra health benefits.

The re-launch at PATS Sandown (stand A5) is part of the brand’s With Goodness Comes Greatness campaign, designed to educate consumers on everyday dog health issues and that there is a great tasting, natural alternative in dry pet food that can help solve common problems such as flaky and dry skin, poor appetite and bad breath.

Like all Lily’s Kitchen’s recipes, the dry food range has been created alongside vets and nutritionists with carefully crafted recipes and high quality proteins to create a complete and nutritionally balanced food for dogs.  With vets often citing poor quality protein as the cause for many of the common complaints they see in their surgeries, including dry and flaky skin and poor appetite, the new Lily’s Kitchen packaging will also focus on the high quality protein and other functional benefits of its products to make them easier to see.

All Lily’s Kitchen foods contain freshly prepared, high quality meat specifically chosen for its high digestibility and complete nature.  They’re also free of meat meal and artificial fillers that are commonly found in pet foods and that can be of lower quality and more difficult to digest than the freshly prepared meats such as venison, salmon, lamb and chicken used in Lily’s Kitchen recipes.

Lily’s Kitchen website (www.lilyskitchen.co.uk).

Exciting new Henry Wag launches from 3P Enterprise

3P Enterprise, the pet accessories manufacturer and distributor, is set to strengthen its offering under the Henry Wag brand with the launch of a range of new products to help pets and their owners.

Now in its 15th year of trading, 3P Enterprise has been working with manufacturers to develop a range of premium quality, practical products designed to improve the health and wellbeing of pets and simplify pet ownership. The focus on health and wellbeing and the development of these new products under the Henry Wag brand represents a new phase in the growth of the 3P Enterprise.

“After the success of the Elevated Bed, we recognise there is an opportunity grow the Henry Wag brand through product innovation,” comments 3P director Grant Rogers.

“By understanding our customers and their needs we have been able to design a range of products which improve a pet’s  health and wellbeing and make caring for your pet easier.”

Under the new program, the Elevated Dog Bed will be relaunched with an improved frame and fabric construction, but will retain the benefits of a solid board base to promote a healthy flat sleeping position, supporting the dog’s back and hips. The design makes it easy for the owner to clean around the bed.

At PATS Sandown, 3P unveiled a range of Henry Wag travel accessories and summer products conceived to promote outdoor activities and increase vitality in both pets and owners.

To date 3P has focused on the product range available from its overseas suppliers, and whilst 3P has sole distribution agreements on many items, often these products are developed for the US market, which do not always meet the needs and requirements of European consumers.

With their experience in the pet industry and in product design the range of products have been developed by 3P specifically to meet the needs of the British and European markets.

Buyers can experience the 3P’s new focus on health, happiness and ease of ownership at PATS Sandown Stand M11.

Recent murmurings within the tight-knit pet food fraternity were indeed true! Nutriment has finally moved into its new state-of-the art production facility on the idyllic Laverstoke estate, a new, purpose-built facility that in one fell swoop doubles their 2015 production capacity.

In addition Nutriment & Laverstoke have agreed to team up in a new joint venture that will initially result in the arrival of a new look, organic tier of biologically appropriate pet food under a striking new Laverstoke livery before later looking at the opportunities for a new collection of top-notch treats.

According to Nutriment founder, Suzanne Brock: "Laverstoke share our belief that raw is the future when it comes to providing exceptional pet food choices brimming with nutritional integrity.

"Our friendship was forged some while back because Nutriment has been a long-term beneficiary of their truly exceptional meats. Both parties now feel very strongly that BARF is at a pivotal point where a more joined up approach could bring some significant additional impetus to proceedings.

"Certainly the arrival of an organic sub-range fits snugly within Nutriment’s extensive portfolio that includes, Just, Nutriment Core and Dinner for Dogs."

In celebration of their 25 year commitment to preparing award-winning Biologically Appropriate foods from fresh regional ingredients, Champion Petfoods has launched the ACANA Heritage range.

ACANA Heritage replaces the ACANA Classics, with product names and colour coded bags unchanged but with more meat, more fresh meat, no grain, potato or starch and the need for only one added zinc supplement.  The only name change in the range is Chicken & Burbank Potato which becomes Cobb Chicken & Greens.

ACANA Adult remains unchanged at present.

ACANA Heritage has 60-75% nourishing meat inclusions all from animals passed fit for human consumption.  One third of the meat is fresh and bursting with goodness whilst the other two thirds have been dried to provide a strong natural source of protein.

There are now three fresh meats, all sourced local to the kitchens of Champion Petfoods. These include free-run chicken and eggs from prairie farms and wild-caught flounder from Vancouver Island. All recipes are now prepared in whole prey ratios of meat, organs and cartilage to deliver nutrients naturally without the need for supplements.

ACANA Heritage is carbohydrate limited and grain-free.  Low-glycaemic Alberta Oats have been replaced with lentils and locally grown field peas. No high-glycaemic carbohydrates such as potato, tapioca or starches are included – ACANA Heritage has a low glycaemic load at less than GL 9.

ACANA Heritage includes 12 fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables including pumpkin and squash (for digestive health) together with British Columbian local grown botanicals.

The ACANA Heritage range is full of goodness and flavour – all supplied by nature! Fresh liver, freeze-dried, is added for natural palatability and, because the whole prey inclusions supply nutrients naturally, the only added supplement is zinc.

ACANA Heritage will be available in bag sizes 11.4kg, 6kg, 2kg and 340g.

Self-service dog washes offer high level of profitability
Retailers are discovering how self-service dog washes can offer a high level of profitability when they visit the K9 Dog Wash stand at PATS Sandown...

K9 Dog Wash has returned to PATS Sandown after a highly successful launch at the show last year.

The company officially launched the K9000 self-service dog wash at the PATS Sandown 2015 trade show.

The innovative machine provides a low cost and convenient way for dog owners to keep their pets clean.

This year K9 Dog Wash is offering a choice of two models; the standard and deluxe versions.

Typically customers see a return on investment within 18 months, based on just 10 to 15 users per week.

Ken MacKinnon, Business Development Manager at K9 Dog Wash (pictured below), said: “PATS Sandown gave us the perfect platform to launch the K9000. We are back this year offering a choice of two units as well as competitive pricing and finance options.”

Self-service dog washes offer a high level of profitability from a very small footprint and minimum of staff involvement.

The K9000 takes up less than five square metres for the entire enclosure and machine. Installation requires a 32A single phase electricity supply, standard mains water connection and foul water waste access.

The dog wash is easy to run and maintain, constructed from stainless steel and components used in the valet and car wash industries.

Animal OBE for life-saving Newfoundland

A Newfoundland dog, who saved nine people and a dog from drowning during a ten-year water rescue career, has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit – known as the animals’ OBE – for outstanding devotion to duty.

Whizz, who sadly passed away earlier this month aged 12, spent most of his life dedicated to patrolling the Bristol Channel and the River Severn with the Royal Navy Rescue, the Severn Area Rescue Association and Marine Volunteer Service.

As well as being a water rescuer, working alongside his owner David Pugh, Whizz also enriched the lives of hundreds of people as a fundraiser and therapy dog.

The PDSA Order of Merit was presented to Whizz’s cousin, Tizz, and owner David Pugh at a ceremony on the quayside of the Docklands Scout Project on the Isle of Dogs, London (Tuesday 22 March 2016).

Whizz is the third dog to be awarded the PDSA Order of Merit, which recognises animals that display outstanding devotion to their owner or wider society, above and beyond normal companionship – and represents an exceptional example of the special relationship between animals and humans.

The gentle giant who stood at over six feet tall on his hind legs and weighed 12 stone, was trained to rescue people in peril from the water by owner David when he was just a year old.

Whizz’s achievements

Whizz’s esteemed career saw him carry out some amazing rescues including:

In August 2008, a family were enjoying the day at Oxwich Beach, Wales.  Their two small girls had persuaded their parents to buy them a small inflatable dinghy. Suddenly the parents realised they couldn’t see their girls and panic set in: the dinghy had drifted out to sea and they were spotted on the horizon with a boat approaching.  The girls had been thrown from their dinghy by a large wave and Whizz, along with a lifesaver, leapt from the lifeboat. Whizz pulled the girls to safety.

In February 2007 Charlotte Burroughs was out walking her two Red Setters Flynn and Topper when she realised that Topper had wandered off.  Charlotte became increasingly worried and returned home distraught. On her way back she passed David, who was walking Whizz and she asked if he had seen Topper. David explains: “I don’t know what prompted him, but Whizz suddenly took off and started running towards a disused water treatment pool. He jumped in the water without hesitation, as was his nature. As Charlotte and I approached, we saw Topper in the water, struggling to get out as the sides were too slippery and steep and he’d hurt his legs trying to get free. Whizz pushed Topper towards me and I helped pull him onto dry land. There is no doubt that if Whizz hadn’t acted when he did, Topper would have been in grave danger that day.”

On another occasion in 2011, Toni Curtis from Bristol was enjoying a swim in the sea while on her family holiday, when she began having an asthma attack. Toni said: “I am a proficient swimmer and love to venture out into the deep water. The asthma attack took me by complete surprise and as I was treading water; my airway closing and struggling to breathe, I realised just how isolated I was. I was sure that nobody would see me and panic really set in. The next thing I knew I heard a muffled voice, telling me to ‘grab the dog’ and before I knew it, I was being pulled to the safety of the lifeboat. Whizz had saved me and I will be forever in his debt.”

As well as his water rescues, Whizz raised thousands of pounds for charity by taking part in Newfoundland Water Rescue Days.  People were sponsored to jump into the sea (wearing life jackets) and were rescued by Whizz and his fellow Newfoundland water rescue dogs. David set up the charity Newfound Friends in 1989 to raise the profile of the breed and use their skills to raise money for a number of human and animal charities.

Whizz also transformed the lives of sick children and adults through his visits to hospitals, nursing homes and hospices, as well as visiting servicemen injured in the line of duty.

Award Reaction

Whizz’s medal was presented to fellow Newfoundland Tizz, by PDSA Director General, Jan McLoughlin, who said: “Whizz’s life was utterly devoted to saving and enriching the lives of the humans he met. His story embodies the enormous contribution that animals make to our lives. He is a thoroughly deserving recipient of the PDSA Order of Merit, which celebrates the outstanding devotion that Whizz displayed.”

Whizz’s owner David Pugh, said: “I am bursting with pride for Whizz. He was a dog in a million and I am truly heartbroken that he isn’t here to receive his medal. Whizz loved working and had an extraordinary talent. Not only was he strong and gentle – he was also so emotionally intuitive. This made him the perfect rescue and therapy dog and a beloved companion to the hundreds of sick children and adults he met along the way.

“I am thrilled that Whizz has been recognised with the PDSA Order of Merit – Tizz has some big shoes to fill today!”

His good work goes on with a fundraising pledge

Whizz’s owner David and PDSA Director General Jan McLoughlin today announced that they will be returning to the quayside of the Docklands Scout Project on 5 September 2016 to hold a special Newfound Friends fundraiser in aid of PDSA.

David said: “When I was told that PDSA was honouring Whizz with a medal, I wanted to do something in return. PDSA is an amazing charity that keeps pets and owners together through thick and thin – saving the lives of more pets than any other animal charity. My own family used PDSA in Bristol when I was young, so I know only too well what a valued service they provide.

“So Newfound Friends will be holding a fundraising event for PDSA here at Docklands Scout Project, giving people the chance to be ‘rescued’ from the wharf by one of our dogs and experience the power and grace of these beautiful creatures, while raising money for a fantastic cause.”

New tick-bourne disease discovered in Essex
Babesiosis had never before been recorded in the UK , but since October, four dogs from different households in Harlow, Essex have been confirmed to be infected with the disease...
Babesiosis had never before been recorded in the UK , but since October, four dogs from different households in Harlow, Essex have been confirmed to be infected with the disease.

Babesiosis is caused by a tiny, single-celled parasite called Babesia canis, which is common in other parts of the world, but so far had been absent from the UK. It causes acute fever and anaemia (often first noticed as pale gums), and can be fatal. Treatment is possible, and involves medication and blood transfusions.

These four cases were in dogs that had never travelled outside the UK, so demonstrating that the disease is now surviving freely in the Harlow area. The parasite, and most probably its favourite vector, the Meadow Tick, Dermacentor reticulatus, also not commonly found in the UK, are both alive and well in Essex. Milder winters, as a possible result of global warming, may have resulted in parts of the UK becoming more attractive places for these parasites to live.

As with most health issues, prevention is better than cure. To prevent pets from becoming infected, make sure they have received regular treatment with a tick prevention veterinary medicine, such as Beaphar Dog Flea & Tick Drops. If you do find a tick on your dog, remove it as soon as possible. The likelihood of transmission of a tick-borne disease increases with time, so check your dog when you return from a walk and remove any ticks you find as soon as you can. Beaphar Tick Away is a freezing spray that will help to weaken the tick’s grip and make it easier to remove.

Ticks thrive in particular types of habitat. Dermacentor particularly likes wooded areas with dense undergrowth. Avoid using these areas for regular walks, especially during the period of peak activity, between March and June.
